Welcome to student life in NCI! This publication is designed to give you a flavour of the sporting, recreational, and social extra curricular activities on offer to NCI students. The learning gained through involvement in extra curricular activities is increasingly recognised in the professional environment and provides a valuable opportunity to acquire life skills such as leadership, communication and organisational management. The dedicated Student Support and Students’ Union team organise a number of activities and events for students to pursue. The best way to fulfil college life is to encourage you to discover and explore existing opportunities and develop new interests. There are lots of great Clubs and Societies to get actively involved with on campus. Whether you are a sports enthusiast, share a special interest or enjoy being engaged in the community there is bound to be an opportunity for all students to participate. Many students say that because NCI has an inviting student environment, the opportunity to get involved and make really close friends is an amazing part of their educational journey.

The Students' Union represents the rights of its members and promotes the interests of the student body at all levels of College governance. It is the sole provider of clubs and societies, which promotes integration and friendship. The Union has representation on the College's Governing Body and Academic Council. All registered students of the College are automatically members of the Students' Union, which gives them a representative voice in college. The NCISU is located in the Students’ Union Basement (SUB) where there are pool tables, table tennis tables, play stations, TV, big screen and sofas for your use. There are two full-time officers and three part time officers; who together provide education, welfare, equality, clubs and societies, entertainments and part time support. Drop into our offices, everyone’s welcome! No need to knock or make appointments.
Stu Uni dent on s’ Life Class Reps Becoming a class rep not only gives you the opportunity to meet new people but you can also gain experience in dealing with lecturers and students. If you feel that there is an issue within your class, your class rep is the first person to go to. As a class rep, you have the chance to put forward any changes that you feel would be beneficial for your class, course, or the Union as a whole. The NCISU provides each rep with all the training and resources they need. Each class rep attends a number of SU Council and School/College service meetings each semester.

Games Day generally involves playing modified mixed 5-a-side sports followed by a short awards and prize giving ceremony.
Sports Scholarships
NCI is committed to the development of sporting excellence and awards a number of sports scholarships each year to promote and foster sporting talent within the College. The scholarship programme is an investment in student potential which endeavours to tailor performance based components with financial support so students can maintain a dual focus on academic and sporting progression.
Special Purpose Award
The initial motivation for developing this award came from students of NCI who wish to have their learning and skills formally recognised through extra-curricular activities or voluntary activity with Clubs and Societies, Students Union, Early Learning Initiative or College community. Students could be accredited with 10 ECTS credits through electing the Level 7 Certificate in Service Learning-Special Purpose Award offered in the School of Business.
Student Development Programmes Campus Connect Volunteer Programme
The Campus Connect Volunteer Programme provides opportunities for students to become active in the community to develop and extend their personal and academic skills. It encourages students to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of children and young people in the communities surrounding the College. NCI are seeking to recruit diverse students, with a mix of backgrounds, disciplines, personalities, and interests, as well having the ability to have fun and laugh at themselves.
Peer Mentor Volunteer Programme
The Peer Mentor Volunteer Programme is intended to open up another avenue of support for first year students. It encourages peer interaction that relieves the social and academic adjustment to college life. Peer Mentors are volunteer undergraduate students in their second or third year and are usually matched with a small group of first year students from their own course. Get in contact with the student support office if you are unsure of your Peer Mentor details.
Student Leadership Programme
The Student Leadership Programme is designed to enhance leadership and communication skills in an interactive, participatory learning environment. Selected students will be assisted to identify their leadership style and learn how to effect positive change in their college and community. The programme will give an opportunity to talk to and learn from leaders who are leading change in their organisations, and will also allow frank conversations with senior leaders from within the National College of Ireland and its associates.
