Hickory Chair began almost a hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product

and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair. The vision was to combine the

preserving natural resources and minimizing our environmental footprint by reducing waste,

re-purposing scrap and re-engineering inefficiency out of the product and process itself.

For over ten years, the Thomas O’Brien Collection with its signature style of warm modernism has provided a new definition for what is considered classic furniture by Hickory Chair. The thoughtful and careful selection of classic pieces from various eras and places executed in a diverse variety of materials including metal, stone, leather and a variety of wood species along with jewelry-like hardware immediately created excitement as the new collection was introduced and has flourished in the years since.

We celebrate O’Brien’s 10th anniversary with an important new American Modern introduction, The Library Collection by Thomas O’Brien. This new collection is an amalgamation of items that are reproductions or adaptations of pieces Thomas has collected for his home and library. This is a very special and eclectic group, assembled as a collector’s pick of memorable pieces, each one designed to be a touchstone that can define a room. Like the Hallings Secretary and Emma Chair from previous introductions, most pieces are modern rethinking of antiques: some imagined out of favorite details; others

This group grew out of O’Brien’s personal collecting and designing for a new studio-library that he is building in the garden of his Long Island house. The furniture that he has been gathering for this

space led to ideas for a type of ‘curated’ group – the kind of things one might bring home from wonderful travels, or uncover in favorite small antique shops. The setting of a personal library becomes symbolic, for in this type of space, furniture can be at its best: comfortable and deeply loungeful, formal enough to receive special guests, generous with places to display treasures, relaxed yet elegant and worldly.

Though many items here adopt the romantic, especially English legacy of a vintage library, O’Brien adds inventions of scale and fabrication to make them chic and new – and usable as a style for every room. In this approach he also builds on Hickory Chair’s impressive personalization program; presenting entirely different frame options for his upholstered pieces and different hardware and finish options for his wood products, so that there is an intensified custom feeling available on almost any item in the collection. In the combining of pieces from these different perspectives, O’Brien shows the modern point of view that can come out of traditional design.

Thomas O’Brien Collection The Atheneum sofa was created by O’Brien from his original sketch studies of formal yet comfortable Regency-inspired upholstery. In both shape and intention, it is a lead piece for the Library collection. The sofa is distinguished by the option of two separate, customized bases: first, a fully upholstered base resting on antiqued brass ferrules in a more Continental style, with a gently scalloping fretwork detail at the legs; and the second, a clubby, library-style profile with acorn-shaped turned wooden feet. In addition, the sofa has an option of two arm profiles: a simpler upholstered arm profile and a second, with nail head detail on the face and side of the arm.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This high-back settee and wing-chair-like detail is another sofa that offers two completely different base designs: first, a refined, continental, tapered and recessed panel mahogany leg; and second, a more casualtraditional turned wood leg in ash, with a shaped stretcher. The latter is adapted from the same 1920s California Tudor settee that gives its shape to the sofa body. The stretchers on this version add a fine cabinet-maker’s detail based on turnings from an antique Georgian side table.

Thomas O’Brien Collection Another invented design out of O’Brien’s sketchbooks, this elegant gallery sofa is distinctive for being fully upholstered top to base, down to the fine antiqued brass ferrules capping the toes. The soft formal posture and fitted tailoring of the upholstery suggest the refinement of an Edwardian design: the high sides, with the dramatic curve of the arms sloping low in the front, to the base; the subtle curved flare to the back, faintly suggesting the roll of a camelback sofa. The base is a slightly crisper variation of the stepped and scalloped detail that O’Brien uses throughout the collection. All are classic details put together in a new way, with new scale and gracious comfort for settings both traditional and modern.

O’Brien and Hickory Chair are pleased to present this collector’s piece, a chair of historical significance and one of the key inspirations for the Library theme of this season. This is an accurate replica of a rare George II mahogany library armchair dating to 1755, joined by a matching Chippendale-style wood-frame ottoman of O’Brien’s design. Two seat cushion options are available: first, a knifeedge pillow that more closely matches the antique; and second, a modern box edge cushion.

With its elongated seat and plump cushion, this type of easy chair began to appear in fashionable drawing rooms in the 1750s, where it was also used for sleeping. It represents one of the first forms to evolve out of the early 18th century wing chair – essentially, the birth of upholstery in English furniture, and the forerunner of the sofa. Contrary to its age, the proportions of the chair are remarkably modern – lowslung, beautifully angled, and generous enough for even a tall man to comfortably stretch out on.

A trim, rounded club chair with high, vintage rolled arms, in prototypical English Deco style. The intrigue of this piece is the D-shaped ottoman, which, when fit together with the chair, creates the effect of a full chaise. Both chair and ottoman come with two foot options: first, a turned wood profile based on the urn shape of a 1920s English ceramic vase; and second, a clean, modern tapered post.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This substantial club chair is the largest O’Brien has developed yet – a crisp alternative to his popular Hayward club chair. It has a classic, low, rolled and pleated arm, with an elongated, sloped profile that makes for a very deep chair. The ottoman is equally generous. The design is adapted from a tailor-made custom chair that O’Brien originally created for a client residence.

This striking design combines an unlikely pair of modern and ancient inspirations.

The narrow, exaggerated high-back seat is based on the form of 1960s-era hall chairs that O’Brien has long wanted to add to his Hickory Chair collection. The legs were drawn from a much-admired image of a bronze Roman tripod table with classical paw feet. The feet are carved in intricate detail, adding to the opulent proportion and exotic historical drama of the chair.

Thomas O’Brien Collection A sophisticated and sinuously framed modern easy chair, based on a late 1930s French burl wood original that O’Brien bought and restored some years ago. The vintage chair had a cane back and an unstructured loose cushion, while this chair has been developed with a slim upholstered panel back. In a truly Deco style, selected portions of the legs, base, and arms of the chair are clad in fine kingwood veneer.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This is a beautifully structured chair, liberally translated and much enlarged from a petite 1820s Swedish ebonized armchair. The crescent shape and neoclassical, columned arms of the antique remain, while the original curved wood back is replaced with a panel of elegant button-tufted upholstery. The tapered front legs are capped with antiqued brass ferrules. Like the Madison chair from O’Brien’s first collection, Teague promises to be a chameleon seating option that will work in the dining room, at the desk, or as an occasional chair in a living room, foyer, or bedroom.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This large, upholstered ottoman reinterprets the Darcy sofa’s stepped and scalloped upholstery base as a wood frame, for use with the sofa or with other furniture. The distinction of the design is the pattern of rectangular-paneled quilting and stitching on the ottoman top, adapted from hand-quilted trapunto leatherwork on an antique Tudor chair. Thomas O’Brien Collection This marble-topped metal coffee table shares its silhouette with O’Brien’s Visual Comfort lighting family of the same name. The antiqued iron base has scrolling feet, picked out in warm antiqued brass, are taken from the handles on a set of Machine Age 1940s forged fireplace tools. For the tabletop, O’Brien was inspired by the inlaid alabaster top of a George II carved gilt wood pier table, dating to 1740. This inlay is set in modern, pale grey marble, with taupe and charcoal grey in the pattern. In addition, the Calliope frame is available with a firmly upholstered, hand-tufted chic antiqued brass button-tufted top, for use as a bench as well as a coffee table.

Thomas O’Brien Collection Those who choose upholstered bed frames will love O’Brien’s newest offering, his most elegant and versatile shape to date. This is a privileged design that blends the plush headboard, side rails and footboard of two custom beds that Thomas O’Brien created for a favorite client. In a specialized feature, the headboard has a central raised and shaped panel, trimmed in a border of tailored welting. This treatment is carried through to the shape of the footboard and side rails. The bed may be detailed with nail head trim, in the same manner as the Atheneum sofa. It is also available as a headboard only, without the side rails and footboard in Twin, Queen, King and California King sizes.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This sophisticated pedestal table is based on one of the pieces of custom furniture that O’Brien created for the New York City apartment of a favorite client. A close reproduction, the table has a strong, classic 1920s silhouette, with a sculptural rectangular pedestal and handsome recessed panels along the gallery edge of the tabletop. Details include a rich book- and butt-matched swirl mahogany veneer top and elegant glazed antiqued silver toe caps and casters.

Thomas O’Brien Collection Based on an antique Georgian mirror from the early days of O’Brien’s store Aero, this very fine, unadorned mahogany frame presents an oval within a rectangle. The body of the frame is finished in elegant kingwood veneer, with a soft oval bevel to the profile. The mirror glass is clear. True to the spirit of the antique, O’Brien’s favorite finish combination is two-tone, with Light Walnut on the kingwood and Sable on the exterior frame and interior bevel.

Thomas O’Brien Collection The specially designed frame for this mirror is made of an intricate repetition of individual, narrow half-round and stepped profiles, following a classic Georgian style of millwork that encourages a play of light, line, and cast shadow. Maximizing these profiles, the mirror lends itself to customization many ways with painted finishes, including contrast trim along inner edges.

Alternately, a solid wood finish on the frame will highlight the design of the clear mirror glass, etched in an antique style of V-cuts for the effect of a windowpane grid. May be hung vertically or horizontally.

Thomas O’Brien Collection O’Brien envisioned this virtuoso union of upholstery and fine cabinet-making as a way to demonstrate the level of fine custom craftsmanship at Hickory Chair.

He wanted to design a special collector’s cabinet for this library-inspired group, and the resulting bookcase is a true atelier-style piece that is crafted to draw attention from both front and sides. The entire framework of the case is lined in fabric and fully edged, inside and out, in double rows of over 2800 hand-applied nail heads.

On the sides, the nail heads create an elegant pattern of raised panels around a central oval medallion. This case is offered two ways: first, with nail head-paneled cabinet doors enclosing the bottom section of adjustable shelves; and second, with no doors. The upholstery is available in a choice of antiqued velvet, flannel suede, and linen. The wood crown, base and shelves are available in all Hickory Chair finishes.

Thomas O’Brien Collection The intention behind this piece was to create a smaller, elegant chest for the bedside or sofa side. It is in the style of a very fine but simple Scandinavian Biedermeier case in burled wood, which O’Brien had admired at auction. To this form he adds a faceted foot from a Scottish Arts and Crafts cabinet – another example of converging interests which produce a blended design. A special decorative feature is the acorn motif of the antiqued brass hardware – delicate acorn key covers over the escutcheons, and newly designed acorn drawer pulls to go with them.

The cabinet is interpreted in solid ash with walnut veneer top and drawer faces which gives a subtle twotone appearance in stain finishes.

One of the most distinctive features is the acorn motif of the antiqued brass knobs and escutcheons.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This is one of a series of special items based on antiques that O’Brien collected for the country and city homes of a longtime client. The model is a neoclassical 1830s mahogany chest of drawers that feels nearly modern in its spare refinement. This version, also in mahogany, retains the slender fluted column posts, high stylized acorn feet, and inset escutcheons of the antique, with the addition of simple antiqued brass drawer knobs to ease function.

Thomas O’Brien Collection An important, refined, double-pedestal table, O’Brien’s first for Hickory Chair, which he originally made for a residence in the famed River House apartment building in Manhattan. Like most of O’Brien’s custom designs, this piece is historical and extremely authentic in technique, but also original in its reinvention of antique forms. The special bow shape to the ends of the rectangular tabletop adds a soft modern character to the flowing formality of the pedestals. The base offers a choice between a fully profiled wood foot, discreetly tucked under the pedestal leg, or, a prominent antiqued brass paw caster, which is more antique in feeling. Also available with a 60-inch round top that extends to 84-inches with one 24-inch leaf installed.

Thomas O’Brien Collection Another invented piece merging features of different collected antiques, this elaborate table cabinet is also a modern exercise in scale and pattern. O’Brien surveyed his own antique Swedish modernist cabinet for its unique height and shape, then revised the legs and base in a much more straightforward, rectilinear form, adapted from a vintage Chippendale furniture pattern book. He modeled the beautiful geometric inlay for the doors after the doors on an authentic antique Chippendale cabinet, out of one of the purest preserved Chippendale houses in Scotland.

The cabinet is designed with adjustable shelves behind the doors. The base with its four drawers can be used on its own as an elegant low console or media table.

Thomas O’Brien Collection The exceptional latticework on the back of this chair is O’Brien’s refining and reworking of a simpler antique Georgian chair that he had seen at auction. An elegantly extended high back and more complex carving give the chair a scale that works for today, both as an occasional and a dining room option. The front posts are capped with antiqued brass ferrules.

Sebastian is designed two ways, to be used independently, or mixed together.

A carved wood version with the latticework back can be grouped ensuite with the arm chair for a more traditional dining room presentation. A second variation offers a fully upholstered seat and back, with the same distinctive, graceful shaping of the chair top. Standard nail heads front and rear help to outline the unique silhouette of the seat back. For the Arm Chair, O’Brien preserved the scrolled, cascading arms of the original antique, along with the subtle arabesque at the top of the frame for both arm and side chair profiles.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This bold architectural table is designed to be used as a console or a sideboard in the dining room or living room. It is based in size and proportion on a fine English George III console table dating to 1785. The panelized leg design, with its pronounced block foot, comes from an etching of a Chippendale clock pedestal, of the same period. The apron is divided into three useful drawers, one with a silver liner for flatware storage. This table comes with amply scaled Georgian lifting handles mounted on the drawers and side panels; or, the table can be made without handles for a more modern appearance.

Thomas O’Brien Collection For the option of an enclosed sideboard cabinet, O’Brien designed this formal case with beautiful ebony and burled walnut inlay, a subtle concave curve to the front, and two adjustable shelves on either side of the center stile. The richly carved feet are based on an acanthus detail from an elaborate Georgian server. Neoclassical bracket hinges and pendant door pulls add ornament and extend the finish detail. Drawn together from such diverse sources, this is a much-studied, invented design; yet, in its intricacy and traditional craft, the cabinet is made to feel as if it is reproduced from a single antique.

The subtle concave curve to the front adds elegance.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This modest yet carefully designed table finds the modern in the traditional. O’Brien wanted to work with a peculiar but intriguing convention of early Georgian and Chippendale furniture, where exterior profiles were squared and plain to the point of spareness, and all the most refined moulding detail was revealed on the inside of legs or other features. He employs that reversal with beautiful Georgian moulding profiles on the interior of the table legs and rimming the underside of the table lip. The recurring motif of a stepped, scalloped edge appears on all four sides of the table base. In a different modern note, openwork rosettes of antiqued brass are used in a mixed metal hardware concept with iron ring pulls. This piece is finished on all four sides and features figured walnut veneer on the tabletop and drawer.

Thomas O’Brien Collection O’Brien loves using and is known for his trays, from his signature modern Aero Tray, available exclusively through Aero Studios, to this more classic form, first designed and custom-made for a client. It follows the original, with gentle sloping sides, a profiled base, book- and butt-matched mahogany veneer, and elegant bracketed patinated iron hardware with lifting handles on each end. Available without the lifting handles upon request.

Thomas O’Brien Collection One of many pieces this season to feature paw or claw feet, this diminutive side table with a big personality is named after O’Brien’s dog Jones. It is a close translation of an antique occasional table found in upstate New York, with a charming, unusual, triple paw configuration of each foot. The paws are on such a bold scale that the design seems more gutsy and whimsical than nostalgic. Elaborate acanthus leaf details join each leg to the tabletop, and the carving overall is very true and fine.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This tall metal stand is a close replica of a neoclassical pedestal from one of O’Brien’s favorite art and antique dealers, purchased after years of trying to convince him to part with it. On its own or in pairs, the stand is part of O’Brien’s emphasis on collecting and display, and could be used to highlight a special object, lamp, stack of books, or beautiful plant.

Thomas O’Brien Collection A delicate, versatile table, based on a Chinese antique with a removable tray and folding stand. This version has a fixed base, while the tray is still removable, all in a beautiful lacquer-like antiqued pale cream finish. The tray itself is completely curvilinear, with scalloped corners, soft side arcs, and rounded cutout finger holes on all four sides.

Thomas O’Brien Collection This vintage modern table design is loosely translated from an antique Deco patterned shagreen table. The tabletop repeats the antique’s piecework diagonal motif in a contemporary faux shagreen material, slightly inset from a newly designed book-matched walnut veneer base. O’Brien was inspired by Art Deco jewelry as well as angular architectural profiles of the Deco period in the design of the table’s custom-made, very large, antiqued brass feet. Available in a generously scaled cocktail cocktail table and as a companion side table.
