PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
Welcome
Spring has officially arrived and with it a feeling of hope and renewed energy. Although a sense of unease remains on many fronts, the green shoots of new life emerging across the neighbourhood bring with them a sense of anticipation for the year ahead. There is certainly lots to look forward to in this issue, including a feature on the importance of nature in cities, with an illustrated map highlighting some of the most storied and beautiful trees found locally – see p4 for more information on these and the many more soon to join them. Jubilation!! A blockbuster summer of events is anticipated, with a central fortnight of activity spanning the Chelsea Flower Show, Chelsea in Bloom and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations from Monday 23rd May to Sunday 5th June. Chelsea in Bloom will be themed ‘British Icons’, drawing inspiration from the characters, symbols and emblems across the United Kingdom that make us Great Britain and bringing us together in celebration for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee taking place the following week. We hope ‘British Icons’ is a theme with abundant opportunities across fashion, art, design, music, food, sport, literature and more – from the likes of David Bowie to the Mini, Bond, Mary Poppins to Vivienne Westwood, Big Ben and of course, Her Majesty. This is an amazing opportunity to join us in floral jubilation - God save the Queen!
The main floral installations will then be kept in place for the following weekend’s Jubilee celebrations, with a King’s Road Street Party on Saturday 4th June and Pavilion Road picnic on Sunday 5th June, including live screenings of the spectacular Pageant. It is wonderful to hear of plans across the neighbourhood, including St Luke’s Church who will be hosting a celebratory evensong and giant tea party (further information will be posted here). Everyone is being encouraged to celebrate, please see the Jubilee Pageant pack. If you would like to share your plans with the wider community, please do let us know via community@cadogan.co.uk – if a few groups come forward, we are happy to collate a dedicated newsletter to share this information and publish the events in the May/June issue of Sloane Square magazine.

Pavilion Road Named Top Global Foodie Destination Pavilion Road was selected by The Grocer magazine as one of the world’s ‘seven places every foodie should visit’ – ‘a small but perfectly formed pedestrian backstreet featuring an incredible array of carefully selected independent food retailers.’ For more information or further foodie inspiration, read the full article here.

St Giles Trust Since 2020, Cadogan has funded a local case worker at St Giles Trust, a charity which focuses on reaching young people who are at risk or involved in Child Criminal Exploitation and serious youth violence. Through intensive mentoring and dedicated support in moving away from criminal activity, St Giles Trust helps them to find positive alternatives and reintegrate into mainstream education and really supports vulnerable young people to turn their lives around. In 2021, the charity supported over 1700 people through youth violence, child criminal and gang exit services, and helped over 430 people into paid work. This year is St Giles’ 60th birthday, and to celebrate they are fundraising to help more people gain independence and overcome their challenges. NEW FO OD AND DRINK There are some fresh new faces on Chelsea’s foodie scene.We look at some of the most recent openings… Ottolenghi opened one of their largest London delis on Pavilion Road in January, providing the signature Ottolenghi experience within a unique new design, including a bold terrazzo floor by artist Ivo Bisignano. This all-day spot offers nourishing salads, tempting cakes and a selection of dishes exclusive to Chelsea. Mother Vine also arrived on Pavilion Road. The must-visit wine destination offers joyous bottles for the everyday, timeless classics as well as genuine rarities. There’s even a terrace for a quiet tipple.
Offering fast, yet healthy eating, Leon recently opened on the King’s Road (and for local members of the King’s Road Privilege Scheme are offering a 15% off, see p3). Kiss the Hippo Coffee opened on the ground floor of Vita Boutique Fitness on Sloane Square, providing London’s first carbon neutral coffee and a menu of goodness breakfast bowls, supercharged sandwiches and health-optimising salads. Cantinetta Antinori will open on Harriet Street (just off Sloane Street) in autumn. An exciting new arrival to London from the esteemed Florentine Antinori family, who have a six century heritage in crafting the finest wines. Synonymous with Tuscan warmth, expect old-school Italian charm with fine food, wine and live music.

King’s Road businesses vote ‘yes’ King’s Road businesses have voted overwhelmingly to establish a new Business Improve District (BID), with 85% of businesses who voiced their opinion strongly supporting the BID. The new BID will result in £4 million of new private sector investment in the district over five years to help recover from the impact of COVID-19, upgrade the public realm, improve traffic management, enhance the local environment and promote the area. Hugh Seaborn, Chief Executive of Cadogan said “This is a great result for the King’s Road. The BID will act as voice for businesses and continue the programme of improvements started by local landowners which benefits everyone who lives and works here.” Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, Leader of Royal Borough Kensington and Chelsea, said “Following the launch of our first Business Improvement District in Brompton Road last month, it’s another positive step that the BID in Kings Road is going ahead. THE HOLY TRINIT Y PROMISES AUCTION Join the first-ever Promises Auction at Holy Trinity for a night to remember on 31st March. They are thrilled to welcome everyone for a delicious meal before multi-talented auctioneer, Father Brian, commences the Promises Auction. They are aiming high and would like to raise £20,000 towards their Food Hub children’s kitchen. There will be games and entertainment throughout the evening and some lovely prizes. Put a Spring in Your Step Across the Borough
As the days become longer and the sunshine starts peaking its head out, the Council will be launching its campaign to put a spring in your step and encourage our residents and visitors alike to explore all that the borough has to offer. Expect a Kensington and Chelsea walking map with a unique Easter egg hunt, a brand-new social media competition, a fabulous selfieworthy flower wall and some great ideas for must-see places to visit in the borough. Local Air Quality Following the launch of our Chelsea 2030 plan last year, we are working with the Breathe London Network to help monitor local air quality. With specific targets set out to reduce vehicle traffic and support transition to zero-emission transport, this sensor will measure the impact of initiatives, and support collaborative work across the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and beyond.

TREES GLORIOUS TREES Learn more about some of the neighbourhood’s most important occupants in the current issue of Sloane Square magazine – from the rare Persian Lilac and ancient Mulberries, to the Caucasian Limes soon to grace Sloane Street as its transformation begins to become an even more elegant, greener
boulevard ‘fragrant and alive with butterflies’. As James Burton, senior arboricultural officer at RBKC says, “It’s hard to imagine anywhere else in the world that has this degree of species diversity on public streets, certainly not with the associated history.”

IN MEMORY SIR RICHARD SHEPHERD ‘Richard was a much loved brother, uncle and great uncle… he helped a lot of people with his kindness and generosity and made many friends from different walks of life. As a family, our hearts are broken but we take great reassurance from that the fact that his life was well lived and that he was a real gold medal winner in so many ways.’ – John Shepherd, brother Sir Richard Shepherd was a British Conservative politician and Member of Parliament for Aldridge-Brownhills from 1979 to 2015. He was knighted in the 2013 New Year Honours for public service. Sir Richard also established Partridges, the worldrenowned independent family run fine food store and Royal Warrant Holder, 50 years ago on 25th May 1972. Originally situated on Sloane Street, Chelsea, its slogan still remains “Good things for the larder”.
