CONFERENCE ETIQUETTE Wear your name tag! Pay attention to the meal functions - this is a good way to save some money! If a workshop is full, please find another workshop, Try to arrive a few minutes early for your workshop. CONFERENCE SCHEDULES AND WORKSHOPS COULD CHANGE AT A MOMENTS NOTICE! PLEASE CHECK THE APP AND SCHEDULES BY THE ELEVATORS FOR MOST UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION! First, think about the appropriate behaviors you expect from your own students. Attending a conference workshop is a lot like being a student all over again. You may be tempted to talk to your friends during the presentation. Maybe you will slip out early for another appointment. Or, you might think it’s ok to ask the teacher for special favors. You have probably seen people do all of these things at one time or another. But, think about how you expect your own students to behave. Please have empathy for the presenter and model those behaviors you would like your own students to demonstrate. Please treat all participants with respect by not talking to others while the presenter or another participant is speaking. Please turn off your cell phone or switch your setting to vibrate during all sessions. Stay for the entire session. Ask if you are allowed to photograph during the session. Don’t assume that taking pictures is allowed without permission. Only enter ticketed events such as a Master Class if you have a ticket. If you don’t have a ticket, but want to take the class, go to registration to see if there are available spots. Please don’t put the presenter on the spot by asking them if it is okay for you to watch. They should not have to make those decisions, particularly when other participants have paid to be in a class. Don’t expect less from yourself than you do from your students.
Only take materials that are handed to you. It is not polite to ask for materials when you are not registered or don’t plan to stay for a presentation. Please don’t forget to pay your materials fee, presenters are not reimbursed. They have to use their own money to purchase materials. Do invite others to share supplies and space with you when appropriate. Please introduce and extend yourselves to first time conference attendees. Make your presence enjoyable for others, no one intentionally wishes to offend another. Children and animals are not allowed in workshops and in the vendor area. We love children and pets, but unless your children pay registration fees, they are not allowed in classrooms or at events. Your colleagues pay for the experience, help make it a pleasurable one for all. 5

KENNY WEBB
SUPERVISOR/ADMINISTRATOR ART EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Mr. Kenny Webb is a man adept at wearing many hats. Since accepting the challenge of becoming the Instructional Coordinator for Electives in the Aurora Public School District, Kenny has proven himself, not merely capable of servicing the hundreds of K-12 teachers in more than 60 schools that teach Visual Arts, Physical Education, Foreign Language and the Performing Arts, but rather, Kenny excels in the execution of his duties. Being responsible for all aspects of curriculum adoption, implementation, professional development and district celebratory events such as district art shows, Kenny has proven himself a true advocate of Visual Arts education of educating the whole child. Having been a PE teacher, Kenny knows first hand of the challenges unique to being an electives teacher and has found ways to reward Art Teachers for the work they do outside of the regular duty day, such as preparing, transporting, hanging and striking student artwork. He has also built professional development opportunities that are actually align with the visual arts standards and that art teachers actually benefit from doing as he works to increase job satisfaction. These include Frist Friday Gallery Visits, and an on-line opportunity to share, celebrate and a week long Summer Art Institute, where professional artists lead art making workshops for district art teacher. In addition, participation in these events is rewarded with credit towards salary advancement. Thad McCauley’s words reflect the sentiment of his colleagues when he says,, “Kenny understands the importance of teachers as artists/creators. Aurora Public Schools’ visual art programs are strong and this is a reflection of the strong leadership of our Coordinator, Mr. Kenneth Webb.”

MELODY EPPERSON DISTINGUISHED SERVICE WITHIN THE PROFESSION
Melody Epperson is a strong, passionate leader and advocate of visual arts education whose dedication and contributions inspire others to do more. For more than two decades, Melody has taught at the Open School in Jefferson County as the Integrated Arts Teacher. Tasked with the challenge to create program that includes the visual arts as well as the performing arts from the ground up, Melody went to work, creating a arts program in which her vision of allowing every child an entry point in order to explore innumerable possibilities of expression was realized and her studio is transformed into a place children are invited to create and to experiment, a wide variety of media, techniques and disciplines. Mary Korta of the Open School, reflects, “Imagine a place busy with choice and projects directed and designed by students while a busy hum of voices shares and experiments with ideas. If you can imagine such a place, then you have stepped into the art studio Melody facilitated at the Jefferson County Open School.’ Away from her students, Melody has established herself as a distinguished leader and advocate, especially with regards to ArtSource Colorado to which her contributions have been great. For more than a decade, Melody has, on different occasions, served on ArtSource’s Logistics, Content and Organization and Visioning Committees, as well as a member of the Advisory Council and Secretary. PAM FARRIS MARIAN QUIN DIX LEADERSHIP AWARD
Pam Farris shines brightly as a master teacher, leader and advocate for visual arts education in the state of Colorado and beyond. She shares her talents, enthusiasm and experience with all with whom she comes in contact. As a result of her selfless dedication, Pam has established herself as a warrior in the fight to establish the fact that the visual arts are crucial in every child’s education. In 1996, Pam was recruited to join the Colorado Art Education Association’s Rep Council, serving as the voice for art teachers from private, charter and independent schools throughout the state of Colorado. Two years later, she accepted the invitation to attend the ArtSource Colorado’s Summer Institute. As she gained insight into the workings of the two organizations, Pam came to the realization that if not for the art educators that are willing to volunteer their time and energies, there would be no CAEA, no fall conference and no summer institute, and further more, it was time to step up and get involved. Immediately, Pam sharing her time and experience by presenting workshops at CAEA’s fall conferences and serving on ArtSource’s Logistics Committee, and in time, as Chair of the Board of Directors and Secretary. Under Pam’s leadership and vision, ArtSource has continued to grow and meet the ever-changing needs of its participants, including but not limited to the incorporation of technology, social media and current educational trends. Pam has also attended National Art Education Association’s conferences as both a participant and a presenter. And for a few weeks every year, Pam serves as the Film and Video Chairperson for the Colorado Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, coordinating the jurying process and awards ceremony. Gwen Ahlers concludes, “ I have seen firsthand Pam’s great leadership abilities through the many hats she has worn leading Art Source Institutes and supporting CAEA Conferences. Pam instills confidence in people to be leader and is passionate about advocating for art educators. She is an inspiration to our profession.”

JENNI HALSTED
PETER J. GEISSER SPECIAL NEEDS ART EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Jenni Halsted is passionate about ALL students learning visual art, including those with special needs. At Jefferson County’s Fletcher Miller School, she works tirelessly helping her students be successful in whatever art form they currently are studying. Jenni is passionate about her students’ visual arts experiences, and will continuously think of different ways for her students to be successful in visual arts. She is constantly problem-solving ways for her students to be successful and to experience Jeffco’s Visual Arts means creating a tactile ‘color box’ for a visually impaired student so they might be able to experience what the color red is, or designing a painting catapult so that a student in a wheel chair can experience what it ‘feels’ like to splash paint on a canvas, the experience might look a little different, but ultimately, the learning is the same. At the district level, Jenni has become a beacon for other teachers, representing the special needs world. Unfortunately, most teachers are provided with very little instruction with regards to special needs students in the classroom. Rather, when they obtain a teaching position and students with special needs are included in their roster, they are left juggling large class sizes at the same time trying to find ways to accommodate the special needs students, often with little to no help. Recognizing the problem, Jenni chooses to open her classroom 4-5 times each year in order to equip teachers with ideas, strategies and tools that she has found useful. From tape markings on the floor to help a student needing boundaries feel safe, to developing specialized tools for easy gripping, Jenni’s is full of ideas to share. Shannon May, Visual Arts Coordinator for Jeffco Public Schools, concludes, “Jenni has proven herself a leader, time and time again. Jenni is always ‘looking’ at the district and trying to think of ways that she might be able to support visual arts teachers and help fill that special needs gap. Currently, she is working on developing a Special/Art Ed. Advisory Group. When all is said and done, Jenni’s enthusiasm for teaching visual arts and for the arts in the special needs area are obvious. She is a devoted teacher who is committed to her students, committed to her school, committed to her colleagues, committed to her district, and most of all, committed to her passion in visual arts.” 11
CATHY MOORE ELEMENTARY ART EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Cathy Moore has been a distinguished colleague, mentor, advocate and champion of the arts in Jefferson County for more than 27 year as she strives to make her students’ art making experience meaningful and personal. Through the presentation of well-crafted lessons, targeted for specific ages and media, Cathy provides opportunities for students to practice and develop their own personal sense of what it means to be an artist. Abby Lopez, Sierra Elementary Music Specialist and parent, proclaims, “I am so impressed by the amount of artwork produced in her classroom, as well as the level of competence in their pieces. In Cathy’s classroom, students don’t just learn how to create art, they learn what it means to be an artist, providing them with life skills that they will be able to carry with them into the future.” Believing that giving new teachers great support in the beginning is the foundation for creating great teachers makes Cathy a perfect choice to facilitate the district’s induction process each year for art educators who are new to the district. Cathy is a great listener and always knows how to give new art teachers the support needed. Cathy’s calm, understanding demeanor is a welcome anchor for them as they navigate the challenges of being a new teacher in a new district. As an active member of the Colorado Art Education Association, Cathy has served as the association’s Elementary Division Representative, contributed articles for the Collage, created centerpieces for the Annual Fall conference Awards Ceremony, ran its Open Studio, as well as presented multiple workshops every year for more tthan 20 years. Former student teacher, Leisa Austin, concludes, “Cathy is a powerhouse in the Art Educator world. She is an amazing example of an Art Teacher that gives her all to her students and then shares her knowledge with others. 12

His excitement for the Visual Arts is contagious and his students quickly realize what an amazing teacher he is. We joke about the ‘Mr. Loftus Fan Club’, but I can personally attest to the influence that he has had over students. It is the ultimate honor for a teacher when one can visibly see the influence they had over a student.”

20
I am a multi-disciplined, mixed media artist, art explorer, optimist, and collector of friends for the sake of art and community. Over the past 32 years I had the great love of teaching art to students K-6. Although I have always been an artist, my students artistically formed me in ways I never would have imagined. When I retired as an art teacher I knew I wanted to continue on my artist journey but I also knew I didn’t want to do it alone. So that is how Outside the box studiO came to be! What am I most artistically passionate about: Clay Monotype! If you haven’t tried this form of art, it is a must! It is an intense, technical, and deeply layered process and becomes more beautifully complicated the further you explore. I have been developing this form of art for more than a decade. Mixed Media with Photo Image Transfer! I love layers, multitudes of mediums and then the addition of a subtle story through photo image transfer. My other love: Trying it all! I truly can’t get enough of unearthing and developing art skills in all mediums, sharing discoveries with others and becoming a sponge for new learning.

CHRISTIAN DORE Abstract Colorado from Sketching to Painting Thursday 1 PM - 4 PM, IMPERIAL BALLROOM 1
Born and raised in Kent, England, Christian Dore’s artistic career began in London as a graphic designer for the BBC. A Colorado resident for the past several years, Dore’s current artistic focus has turned to painting, as the extraordinary landscape of his current home provides a grounding and inspiration for his work. It is the warmth and optimism of the Colorado landscape, enhanced by the dramatically changing seasons, which set the tone for Dore’s dazzlingly varied color palettes. His work is tribal in appearance with a distinct colorful texture that exudes Colorado and the artistic techniques of the North American Indians. Dore sketches prior to taking a paint brush in hand. His technique is simple: he works a painting over and over, endlessly layering with paint and mixed media elements, until he achieves the intensity of color and textural build up characteristic of his work. Dore’s bright colors and flurry of abstract forms are by no means frenetic, however, as each painting manages to convey a serene moment in time, a tranquil calm. Creating intense areas of color with heavily textured surfaces, Dore takes the expressive qualities of color to their fullest extreme. His belief in an enchanted inner vision leads to the creation of highly imaginative paintings, inspiring introspection and thought on the part of the viewer. Expressing his feelings about his surroundings, rather than illustrating them, Dore’s work immerses the viewer in a phenomenal visual experience as well as a rich inner journey.

GREG CUSTER Self Portrait in Oil Friday 12 PM - 4 PM, IMPERIAL BALLROOM 1
The one trait that is of the utmost value to Greg Custer is passion. He has lived his life to the motto; “Nothing great ever happens casually.” What triggers the passion for his impressionistic landscape painting can be ignited by setting foot on one of the assorted trailheads that explore the diverse terrain of our country’s southwest region. Greg moved to Colorado from the high plains of northwestern Kansas in 1980. The Colorado lifestyle has been a great fit for his art as well as supporting an active lifestyle. In addition to being a professional oil painter, Greg has been teaching art at a local charter school for the past ten years. His work with his students is diverse in mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. His students have produced prize winning works at the regional, state, and national levels. Whether Greg is in his studio painting a landscape or helping a student construct a sculpture, one can articulate that his life’s journey is an all encompassing experience within the arts.

LEA ANDERSON ART ADVOCACY BREAKFAST 8-9AM, PEAK 17
Lea Anderson, a mixed media and installation artist, has lived and worked in New Mexico since 2003 and has discovered much during her adventures in the dramatic, colorful, and wild desert environment. Often working in multiples and accumulations, each installation piece or body of work cultivates forms and patterns that suggest complex biological characteristics, and can be compared to botanical material, fungi, ocean life, or microbes. Repetitive patterns interweave with unique and irregular components, creating a dynamic interplay that echoes living systems. Anderson has exhibited throughout New Mexico and the USA, as well as internationally in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2015, Anderson was invited to create a monumental, digitally-produced installation piece for the Atrium windows of the Albuquerque Museum as their Summer Artist-in-Residence. She received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from UNM in 2006 and is currently a Full-Time Art Studio Faculty at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). She has led dozens of workshops and short-term classes using a wide variety of mixed media techniques. She has curated exhibitions for 516 ARTS, Harwood Art Center, and Inpost Artspace in Albuquerque. She is currently collaborating on projects with Meow Wolf and Electric Playhouse in New Mexico.
