Accountability

Het Coronavirus hield de laatste tijd ook behoorlijk huis in Zeeland. Met als gevolg dat veel van ‘onze’ mensen fysiek niet op bezoek konden komen; niet bij ons, niet bij ruimteCAESUUR, niet in de provincie. Om in dat gemis een beetje lucht te blazen, doorkruisten Willy en ik in april en mei de Zeeuwse eilanden om daar zeer van te genieten. Terwijl we daarmee bezig waren, hebben we daarvan een paar fijne clichématige1 foto’s gemaakt. Die foto’s plaatsen we dagelijks op fb2 en stuurde die vervolgens dan naar één van de vrienden en vriendinnen toe. Als laatste handeling maakten we met alle foto’s deze digitale uitgave.

The Coronavirus was quite a deal-breaker in Zeeland lately. As a result, many of 'our' people were unable to visit us physically; neither ruimteCAESUUR, nor the province. In order to shine a little light in that absence, Willy and I in the month of April and May travelled the Zeeland islands to enjoy that very much in itself. While doing that, we made some nice clichéd1 pictures. We posted these photos on fb2 every day and then send them to one of our friends. As a final action, we made this digital edition with all photos.

welaan lieve vrienden en vriendinnen, alle clichés zijn waar: zeeland is prachtig, dus omdat jullie dit jaar niet langs kunnen komen . . . Dit tekstje vergezelde de foto’s uit dit boekje in het Coronajaar 2020. Die woorden waren geheel gemeend: zowel ‘lieve vrienden en vriendinnen’ als ‘zeeland is prachtig’. Tegelijkertijd heel erg facebook: laten we het vooral leuk houden. Dus wanneer je alleen maar positieve herinneringen aan wilt overhouden aan de fotoreeks, nemen we op dit moment voorlopig afscheid van elkaar; tot aan een volgende kop koffie. Hopelijk zeer binnenkort.

Elders in de provincie zie je de vervalsing ook nog eens in de architectuur van de woningen zelf: boerderettes, gehistoriseerde dorps-, vissers- en landarbeiderswoninkjes, huizen met uitkijktorens die suggereren dat de zee op inkomende schepen wordt gecontroleerd, et cetera, et cetera. Dat alles in een markt die primair wordt gefinancierd door de symbiose van vastgoedmaffia, drugsgeld en het belastingparadijs c.q. de witwasgeldmachine Nederland. De gevolgen zijn evident: het landschap wordt in toenemende mate vernietigd, de rust en ruimte verdwijnt, het wonen in de dorpen wordt onbetaalbaar, waardoor meer en meer woningen niet meer voltijds bewoond worden, waardoor de infrastructuur van regio’s – van scholen tot winkels – onder druk komt te staan, ‘eenvoudige’ campings worden meer en meer ontmanteld ten einde er dure vakantiewoningen te bouwen, in de concurrentiestrijd op de arbeidsmarkt tussen horeca en (zieken)zorg is de laatste aan de verliezende hand, Zeeland wordt voor modale inkomens langzamerhand onbetaalbaar.

Je bent er nog. De foto’s op pagina 51 en 52 - Duinvallei d.d. 24/04/’20 – geven een ander beeld van Zeeland. Iets dat wij jaren geleden ‘witte schimmel’ noemden. Gigantische vakantieparken met high-end geprijsde huizen; het op één na duurste appartement van Nederland staat in Cadzand-Bad, van een Vlaming met veel geld (Belgen hoeven geen belasting te betalen over bezit in het buitenland). Die parken verzieken het prachtige landschap op een verschrikkelijke manier. Duinvallei is daar een schreeuwend voorbeeld van. Achter een kunstmatig aangelegde ‘dijk’ op een voor Zeeuwse ogen belachelijke plek, die zo het landschap onleesbaar maakt, ligt dit ‘dorp’ in een totaal vervalst landschap: kleine kreken, lage ‘zomer’dijken, ‘vlucht’heuvels, et cetera. Daar waar voorheen een volmaakt platte polder lag. Uiteraard ontbreekt de surveillancecamera niet . . . Het beeld van ‘the compound’ is volledig.

Of, zoals Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer zijn bestsellerboek ‘Hotel Europa’ in Trouw van 13 mei 2020 krachtig samenvat: toerisme is schadelijk. Toerisme vernietigt de sociale structuren van oorden die zich in bijzondere aandacht van toeristen mogen verheugen. Toerisme vervuilt en maakt dingen kapot. Toerisme vernietigt precies dat waardoor het wordt aangetrokken. Als voorbeeld van zijn eerste observatie: Het Zilveren Schor in Arnemuiden aan het Veerse Meer, NB een geschenk van

in Arnemuiden aan het Veerse Meer, NB een geschenk van de Nederlandse samenleving aan de toenmalige koningin Juliana, was één van de laatste plekken waar mensen met een uitkering even een weekje uit hun ‘gedoe’ konden stappen om samen met hun kinderen te genieten van een heerlijk parklandschap met een eigen haventje. Nu is dat verwandelt, met goedkeuring van zijne majesteit zelve, in Harbour Village Het Zilveren Schor met prijzen vanaf € 975.000,respectievelijk € 1.200.000,- , afhankelijk van het type, excl. B.T.W. inclusief grond; dat dan weer wel. Door al deze machinaties wringt het openbaar bestuur – provinciaal, gemeentelijk, waterschappen – zich in duizend bochten om dat alles een wettelijke basis te geven. Zeker in deze tijden van de stikstofcrisis en belastingontwijking. Nogmaals, Zeeland heeft op veel plekken nog wonderschone landschappen, soms wijds, soms gecompartimenteerd, soms bedijkt, soms beduind, met op sommige eilanden prachtige, indrukwekkende landbouwblokken zonder hekken, hier en daar eeuwenoude inlaten als gevolg van rampzalige overstromingen, kortom, het Zeeuwse landschap is een uitermate diverse delta. Maar laten we niet wegkijken van het feit dat dit alles onder enorme druk staat van niets ontziende speculanten die niets, maar dan ook niets intrinsieks met onze provincie van doen hebben.

Quite sincere words: both "dear friends" and "Zeeland is beautiful". At the same time this is very facebook: let's keep it funny. So if you want to keep only positive memories of the photoseries, at this point we say goodbye to each other for the time being; until the next cup of coffee. Hopefully very soon.

in the architecture of the houses themselves: farmhouses, historicized cottages, fishermen and farm workers' houses, houses with watchtowers, suggesting that the ( absent ) sea is checked for incoming cargo ships, etc., etc. All this in a market that is primarily financed by the symbiosis of real estate mafia, drug money and the tax haven or money laundering machine that is the Netherlands. The consequences are evident: the landscape is increasingly being destroyed, the peace and open spaces are disappearing, living in the villages is becoming prohibitively expensive for local people, as a result of which more and more homes are no longer being full-time occupied, as a result of which the infrastructure of some regions - from schools to shops is under pressure, 'simple' campsites are being dismantled more and more in order to build expensive holiday homes, the competition in the labor market between catering and healthcare the latter is on the losing side, Zeeland is gradually becoming unpayable for modal income tourists.

You are still here. The photos on pages 51 and 52 – ‘Dune Valley’ | 24/04 / '20 - give a different picture of Zeeland. Something years ago we called "white mold". Giant vacation parks with high-end priced homes; the second most expensive apartment in the Netherlands is in Cadzand-Bad, owned by a Belgian with a lot of money (also: Belgians do not have to pay tax on property abroad). These parks destroy the beautiful landscape in a terrible way. Dune Valley is a screaming example of this. Behind an artificial landscaped 'dike' on a spot that is ridiculous to people from Zeeland, which makes the landscape unreadable, this 'village' lies in a totally distorted landscape: small creeks, low ‘summer’dikes, hills, etc. Where previously there was a perfect flat polder. Of course, the surveillance camera is not missing. . . The picture of "the compound" is complete.

Or, as Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer powerfully summarizes his bestseller book "Hotel Europe" in Trouw of 13 May 2020: Tourism is harmful. Tourism destroys the social structures of places that ‘enjoy’ the special attention of tourists. Tourism pollutes and destroys things. Tourism destroys exactly what attracts it.

Arnemuiden on the Veerse Meer, indeed a gift from the Dutch population to the then Queen Juliana. Originally intended as a place for young people from different backgrounds to meet. Until recently it was one of the last places where people on social benefits could enjoy a lovely park landscape with its own harbor. Now all that has changed, with the approval of his majesty himself, into Harbor Village Het Zilveren Schor with prices starting from â&#x201A;Ź 975,000, respectively â&#x201A;Ź 1,200,000 depending on the type, excluding VAT, but . . . including the land.

Due to all these machinations, the public administration â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the province, the municipalities, the water boards - flee in thousands of excuses to give all this a legal basis. Quite challenging these days in the context of the nitrogen crisis and tax evasion.

Again, in many places Zeeland you still can enjoy wonderful landscapes, sometimes wide, sometimes compartmentalized, sometimes with dikes, with dunes, sometimes with impressive agricultural blocks without fences, here and there ancient inlets as a result of more recent or ( early )medieval floods. But let's not look away from the fact that all of this is under tremendous pressure from unsparing speculators who have absolutly nothing intrinsically to do with our province.
