underneath the concept
The
transition room
From my diary:

A.'s friend - aged 12 - comes to play with us for the first time. When I let him in, he looks into our hall and says: 'Gee, your hall is even bigger than our living room'.
For years I left Middelburg early every morning to go to the ‘orher side’: to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
Now a days there is a tunnel under the Wester Scheldt; in those days you sailed by car ferry from Vlissingen to Breskens.
So, I parked the car on the premises in Vlissingen, went to the ferry in order to drive in Breskens with colleagues in a shared car to Aardenburg, the place where I worked.

The transit space to the ferry has always held a special place in my heart; I wrote a small essay about it on the occasion of a farewell to work in Aardenburg organized in Paris by my dear colleagues. Because, unlike the anonymous space, the contacts with everyone who regularly stayed there were warm, reciprocal and solicitous. The bleakness that the 'architecture' evoked, the lack of social context, etc. apparently did not prevent contact (before the advent of social media).
Whenever I am confronted in the 'now' with necessary architecture to open up a building, it takes me back to the image of the transition space at the Vlissingen Breskens car ferry.
From the gaze of "transit space," I look not only at corridors, but also at aisles that channel traffic flows in (super)markets, (semi)public buildings such as libraries, schools, town halls, etc.; architectural interventions that seemingly casually also discipline.
In short: the corridor/hallway reveals in a seemingly simple way the complex relationship between architecture, society and also behaviour in the modern world. The hall and corridor can thus be seen as spaces that mark boundaries. Like the concept of thresholds, halls and corridors thus embody a state of limitation - a threshold between one state of being and another.
The corridor, as an in-between space, prompts to think about concepts of transition, social (in)equality, culture identity, historical stratification, (cultural) valuation, etc.
These categories form the "coaster" of this concept.
The corridor, as an in-between space, prompts us unl
