01 SELECCIÓN DE TANINOS VEGETALES VEGETABLE TANNINGS

05 REBAJADO REDUCING THIKNESS

Uno de nuestros secretos reside en la exquisita selección de taninos vegetales provenientes de especies como la Acacia, la Mimosa o el Quebracho.

En este proceso las pieles pasan por una cuchilla que rebaja la piel al grosor adecuado.

One of our secrets lies on the exquisite selection of tannin extracts from trees like Acacia, Quebracho or Mimosa.

02 CURTICIÓN NATURAL TANNING PROCESS Siguiendo la misma liturgia que hace cientos de años: las pieles, los taninos y el agua; se aúnan en el interior de una barrica gigante. El mecanismo se mantiene girando durante unas 3 o 4 semanas, tiempo necesario para curtir este tipo de pieles. Following the same liturgy as they have been doing it for hundreds of years, they place the leather, the tannins and the water into a giant wooden barrel which they keep spinning around for 3-4 weeks, which is the time needed to tan this type of leather.

03 ESCURRIDO DRAINING Una vez curtidas, las pieles son extraídas del interior de la barrica para que sean escurridas del agua a través de unos rodillos. Once the leather is tanned, they remove it from the barrels and they press out the spare water.

04 SECADO DRYING PROCESS Una vez escurridas, las pieles pasan a ser colgadas en salas perfectamente aireadas por corrientes naturales provenientes de la sierra. La fase de secado concluye pasados de 5 a 7 días, dependiendo de las condiciones climatológicas existentes. Once the leather is drained, they hang it in breezy dryers with wind currents generated by the mountain breeze. The drying phase ends after 5-7 days, depending on the existent weather.

In this process the leather gets divided and reduced in terms of thickness with a really sharp blade.

06 ENCERADO/ACONDICIONADO CONDITIONERS/WAXES Uno de los últimos procesos consiste en dar protección y durabilidad a las pieles. Mediante una mezcla de aceite de oliva y cera de abeja elaborada por nuestros artesanos, se imprima una capa sobre la piel que mejora su condición y la protege. One of the last processes consists in giving protection and durability to the leather. With a mixture of olive oil and beeswax made by our artisans, they create a layer on the leather to protect it and to improve its condition.

07 ABRILLANTADO POLISH Dependiendo del tipo de acabado que se elija para cada piel, se utilizará un mecanismo u otro. Uno de nuestros procesos más especiales es el acabado en brillo, el cual se consigue mediante una técnica en la que se produce el roce de una bola de cristal con la propia piel. Depending on the type of finish chosen for each leather, they will use one technique or another. One of the most special processes is to get a final shine polished, obtained by rubbing a special piece of round glass on the leather.

VACA COWHIDE

Nuestro cuero más fino y suave. Este cuero es el más agradable al tacto y principalmente lo usamos para nuestros guantes debido a sus increíbles características. Elástico y resistente, normalmente viene en tonos mate y naturales. El tacto y la sensación es absolutamente indescriptible.

Esta piel procede de las mejores reses del norte de España, como las gochonas, o la vaca rubia gallega. Estas vacas disfrutan de parajes que proporcionan los mejores pastos para su desarrollo, consiguiendo pieles de una calidad extraordinaria.

Our finest and smoothest leather. This leather is the most pleasant to touch, and we mainly use it for our gloves because of its amazing characteristics. Elastic and resistant, it normally comes in mate and natural tones. The touch and feel it is absolutely indescribable.

This leather comes from the best cows from the North of Spain, the ‘gochonas’ and the ‘vaca rubia gallega’. These cows enjoy natural spots that can offer the best feeding for their growth, attaining extraordinary quality of leather.

RENO/CIERVO ELK/DEER

CORDOVAN CORDOVAN

Utilizamos pieles de alces nórdicos y de ciervo norteamericano. La suavidad, el cuerpo y la durabilidad de este cuero; son únicos. El alce es a menudo llamado el rey del bosque, un macho adulto puede pesar más de 600 kg. Este mamífero ha sido parte de la vida silvestre finlandesa desde la Edad de Piedra y tiene un papel importante en la mitología de esta nación. Como animales no domesticados, los alces necesitan estar en plena naturaleza hasta la última época de su vida, lejos de los humanos. Encuentran todo lo que necesitan en el desierto prístino. La caza de alces en Finlandia está controlada por la ley, para garantizar que las poblaciones de alces se mantengan en niveles sostenibles.

La piel de shell Cordovan es el arte de la curtición en su máxima expresión. Este material proviene del caballo, en concreto de su parte posterior, ovalada y con forma de concha. La cantidad de piel que se produce por cada animal es realmente escasa y su proceso se llega a alargar hasta 6 meses. Su curtición es completamente artesanal y está considerada la más exclusiva del mercado.

We use Nordic elk and North American deer leather. The softness, thickness and durability of this leather are unique. Elk is often called the king of the forest, a full-grown male can weight over 600 kg. The elk has been a part of Finnish wildlife since the Stone Age, and has an important role in the mythology of the nation. As undomesticated animals, elks are truly at home in the wild, away from humans. They find everything they need in the pristine wilderness. Elk hunting in Finland is controlled by law, in order to ensure that elk populations are kept at sustainable levels.

Shell Cordovan is the art of tanning at its finest. This leather comes from the horse, precisely from its back, oval and shellshaped. The quantity of the leather that can be obtained is scarce, and its process can take up to six months. Its tanning is handcrafted and considered the most exclusive in the market.

Ubrique, el pueblo de la piel Ubrique, the village of leather 15

Situado bajo los pies de la espectacular Sierra de Grazalema, aparece entre rocas y alcornoques, uno de los llamados pueblos blancos de la serranía de Cádiz: Ubrique. Esta pequeña villa española, es por excelencia, el mejor lugar del mundo para fabricar artículos de piel de manera artesanal. Uno de los pilares de Café Leather es la excelencia en la artesanía, y sin duda nos sentimos afortunados de las manos que tratan nuestros productos. Durante mucho tiempo, la curtición de piel en ésta localidad, fue un referente a nivel nacional. Con el paso de los años, las curtidurías fueron quedando en minoría, dejando paso a una completa especialización en la manufactura de productos de piel. En nuestros días, las grandes marcas de lujo producen sus productos en Ubrique. Algo que no es casualidad, dada la tradición y la exquisita calidad de los acabados a mano de las fábricas de la zona. Bien es cierto, que en esto como en todo en la vida existen diferentes niveles de calidad y diferentes categorías. Fabricar de manera artesanal en Ubrique, ofrece muchas garantías, pero cuando lo que se está buscando es la excelencia, ésta solo se puede encontrar en tres o cuatro fábricas, de las decenas de ellas ubicadas en esta localidad. Café Leather Supply tiene la suerte de poder trabajar con una de ellas y nos sentimos muy orgullosos de que nuestros artesanos formen parte de ésta localidad con tantos años de historia. Nuestros artesanos suelen heredar la tradición de la manufactura de la piel. Artesanos como Juan, natural de Ubrique y con más de 40 años de experiencia fabricando a mano productos de piel, presumen de pertenecer a un selecto grupo de artesanos único a nivel mundial, los artesanos de Ubrique. Juan es claro: “ El arte no se aprende, el arte se mama y se entiende. Para este oficio no vale cualquiera, vale aquel que verdaderamente ama y entiende los procesos de la piel. Nuestro pueblo y la gente que lo compone, ha crecido alrededor de la marroquinería. Casi el 80% de nuestros habitantes trabaja directa o indirectamente en el mundo de la piel. Para el pueblo, la piel no es nuestro trabajo, la piel es nuestra vida.”

Located under the overwhelming Sierra de Grazalema, shows itself between the rocks and cork oaks, one of the so-called White Villages of the Serranía de Cádiz: Ubrique. This small Spanish village is, par excellence, the best place in the world to manufacture handcrafted leather products and therefore the home of the best craftsmen: our craftsmen. One of the pillars of Café Leatheris craftmanship excellence, and doubtless we feel very fortunate because of those who handle our products. For a long time, leather tanning in this town was a national reference. With the pass of time, tanneries became minority, then followed by a complete specialization of leather products manufacturing. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the biggest luxury brands produce their products in Ubrique, given the tradition and exquisite quality of the manufacturers of the village, specially their hand finishing. In this sector, like in any other, exists a wide range of different qualities and categories. Manufacturing in Ubrique offers many guaranties, but when trying to pursue excellence, three or four factories arise out the dozens located in the village. Café Leather Supply is not only proud of working with craftsmen part of a village with such a history but it’s also lucky to manufacture in one of these select factories. Our craftsmen inherit the tradition of the leather manufacturing. Craftsmen like Juan, born in Ubrique and with more than 40 years of experience in the field, he belongs to an exclusive group of artisans, unique in the entire world: the craftsmen of Ubrique. Juan is very clear about it: “Art cannot be learnt, you have to grow along with it and understand it. This work is not for everyone, it’s for those who love and understand the leather processes. Our village and its people grew along with the leather goods. Almost 80% of our people work, directly or indirectly, in the leather world. For us, leather is not our work, leather is our life”.

El reciclaje y la reducción de desperdicios es uno de nuestros mayores retos. One of our main obsessions is that our manufacturers and suppliers follow sustainable policies that respect the environment. We are proud of showing them the way by demonstrating our need to follow the utmost respect.

Recycling and reducing waste are one of our main goals. We try to minimise the waste in every process, which can affect the environment. Luckily all of our processes, are handcrafted, therefore it is very easy to aim zero waste. Whenever is possible we always use recycled materials.

PLÁSTICO CERO ZERO PLASTIC En Café evitamos usar cualquier tipo de plástico. En caso de ser necesario, utilizamos materiales reciclados y biodegradables que provienen de la limpieza de los mares entre otros. At Café we avoid using any kind of plastics. Only if it’s necessary, we use recycled and biodegradable plastics which are coming from the ocean cleanups.

SOSTENIBILIDAD SUSTAINABILITY “Ser sostenible es crear productos que duren toda una vida” Para nosotros, ser sostenible es crear productos que duren 10 años o toda una vida. En nuestro planeta se producen 100.000 millones de prendas anuales, de las cuales más de la mitad se desechan antes de un año. De ahí que nuestros diseños se basen en materia prima respetuosa y de calidad, un obsesivo cuidado por los pequeños detalles y hacer las cosas como se hacían antes, para durar en el tiempo. For us being sustainable is to create products which last for the rest of the life. On our planet they produce 100 000 millions of clothing per year and more than half of them end up in the rubbish in less than one year. That’s why our designs are based on raw materials which are respectful and high-quality ones, obsessively preserving the small details. We do things the way they did before in order to last longer.

Estos, recurren a nosotros cuando alguno de sus clientes requiere que los complementos de piel de su moto sean de máxima calidad. En este caso, el ex-futbolista Xabi Alonso quería una moto hecha a medida, cuidando hasta el último detalle. Our friends from CRD are one of the maximum exponents worldwide in the artisan creation of café racer bikes. It is an honor that they come to us when one of their clients requires the leather components of his bike are top quality. JAVIER SÁNCHEZ MEDINA + CAFÉ LEATHER Javier Sánchez Medina es uno de los artesanos españoles más reconocidos del momento. Este extremeño de nacimiento y madrileño de adopción, realiza a mano y con mimbre, espectaculares cabezas decorativas de animales. Utiliza herramientas del siglo pasado heredadas de su padre y otros utensilios auténticos que convierten a diario su trabajo en una bonita liturgia. Nosotros hemos querido que nos siga deleitando muchos años más con su trabajo y hemos decidido ayudarle facilitándole uno de nuestros delantales de trabajo hechos a mano. Javier Sánchez Medina is one of the Spanish artisans with more worldwide recognition at the moment. Born in Extremadura, adopted son of Madrid, he makes decorative animal heads by hand with wicker. Using tools from the last century, inherited from his father, and other authentic utensils that make his everyday work a beautiful liturgy. In our intention to honor his work and our desire to watch him work for many more years we provided him with one of our handmade working aprons.

Por ello, cuando el propietario de esta magnífica Vespa de competición de 1958 se puso en contacto con nosotros para que le fabricásemos el asiento, no lo dudamos. Nos sentimos realmente identificados con los valores que transmite esta Vespa restaurada y nos encanta que su propietario haya mantenido el oxido en su chasis. At Café, we are in love with everything that is susceptible of being inherited. We love to collaborate in authentic projects with a lot of essence. Therefore, when the owner of this magnificent Vespa race scooter from 1958 contacted us to make the seat, we didn’t hesitate. We feel really identified with the values that this restored Vespa transmits and we are delighted that its owner has kept the rust in its chassis.

Realizamos un asiento de bicicleta clásico con pieles de un importante grosor moldeadas y fabricadas en una sola pieza. El resultado, un producto tecnológico apoyado en técnicas y elementos tradicionales. The mythical Spanish brand Bultaco, chose us to develop the seats of its electric motorcycle model, the Bultaco Alberto. We made a classic bicycle seat with leather of a special thickness, molded and manufactured in one piece. The result is a technological product supported by traditional techniques and elements.

The Californian motor community Petrolicious, is one of our clients in the US. Café is the official supplier of its marketplace worldwide and together with them we develop specific products for some of the most special customers in their community.

Through this collaboration, Café has developed an exquisite waxed cotton bag exclusively for Land Rover customers. The bag, handmade in Spain by our best artisans, is water repellent and is perfect for carrying what is necessary for a weekend.

La colaboración centrada en destacar algunos de los valores de nuestra marca como la tradición, la artesanía y el respeto por las cosas bien hechas; dio como resultado la fabricación de una bolsa de tejido encerado escocés y piel de curtición 100% vegetal Specialty. El claim de la colaboración “Unidos por una misma Filosofía”, resume el por qué de nuestra colaboración. “Two brands, one same philosophy” Jaguar and Café Leather come together to create an exclusive travel bag for customers of the English brand. The collaboration focused on highlighting some of the values of our brand such as tradition, craftsmanship and respect for things well done; It resulted in the manufacture of a bag made out of Scottish waxed fabric and Specialty 100% vegetable tanned leather. The claim of the collaboration “United for the same Philosophy” perfectly summarizes the objective of the campaign.
