Benefits of the Board Leadership Development Workshop
By: Eric Zarr, CMCA, AMS, FirstService Residential, AAMC
One of the annual learning opportunities that the Chapter has is the Board Leadership Development Workshop. In 2021, this two-hour course was held on two consecutive weeknights, starting at 5:00 pm and hosted virtually on Zoom. The course was taught by Kumar Raja, Esq, of Beaumont Tashjian and Eric Zarr, CMCA, AMS, of FirstService Residential AAMC.
In years past the course has been held for a full Saturday offering. Having the workshop split over two days after working hours was helpful according to feedback from the participants. The class size was small enough to facilitate good discussion between the different participants.
Topics covered on the first night were governing documents, roles and responsibilities of the different Board positions, rules and enforcement, and how to find and contract with vendors. The second night covered financial aspects of an Association with budgets, reserves, and collections. The second night also covered CLAC, communications, and meetings.
Participants ranged from brand new Board members to those who have volunteered on their boards for almost a decade. All were all in agreement that the format worked well and that the course was beneficial to them and would be to their fellow Board members. If you are new to your Association Board, or have served for years, I would encourage you to sign-up for the next Board Leadership Development Workshop as I am confident it is a benefit to all who participate.
