Make bathtime funtime with Drieyes! Every now and then a new product comes along and changes your life. DrieyesTM will be one of those products for many Australian families. If your kids love the bath but hate the hair washing part, DrieyesTM is the answer! It keeps the water and suds off your child’s face. No more tears, delay tactics or tantrums!
Some kids also like to use it in the shower to simply keep the water off their faces.
DrieyesTM will not only make kids happier in the bath, it will reduce mums and dad’s stress levels too. DrieyesTM was invented by an Aussie dad who was sick of the hairwashing drama. He knew there had to be a better way. DrieyesTM has been made with both kids and parents in mind. The super-cool, almost alien looking design attracts kids instantly. It works with the child holding the ‘eyes’ and pushing the silicone rim to their foreheads. Because the kids have to hold the device, they are focused on this ‘job’ and tend not to squiggle around so much. This leaves two hands free for mum or dad to get to work on their hair. The result is squeaky clean hair in no time and a more relaxed bath experience for all. DrieyesTM is also great for washing out headlice treatments which can really sting a child’s eyes.
4
DrieyesTM is so great the only difficult decision will be choosing a colour from the fabulously bright range; blue, green, orange, pink or yellow. The Australian made DrieyesTM is currently available online from www.drieyes.com.au for $24.97 plus P&H.

moment with the midwife FIRST AID The very idea of something bad happening to your baby is too much to bear, but unfortunately accidents and illnesses do occur. It is very important for every home to have a first aid kit, which can be purchased either online, from pharmacies or from St John's Ambulance www.stjohnqld.com.au Make sure your kit is secure and stored in a place away from little fingers. Commonly used products found in most homes can be poisonous to babies and children if ingested, so ensure that items such as cleaning products, pesticides, alcohol, cosmetics and personal care products, as well as prescription and non-prescription drugs, are locked away or in an out-of-reach area. If your little one does happen to ingest something in the home call the Queensland Poisons Information Hotline on 13 11 26. Learning some basic first aid techniques can be really helpful if you find yourself in an emergency situation, so look to see what courses are on in the area. Grandparents may to find this helpful to do as well. CPR is a life-

healthy smiles HEALTHY LITTLE TEETH Babies begin to get teeth very early in life (usually around six months of age), and it is important that bacterial plaque, food debris and mouth acids are removed daily. Brush your child's teeth as soon as they appear in the mouth. Initially it may be easier to use a small soft cloth with water to remove the plaque film. As the child grows older a small soft toothbrush with fine bristles is recommended, and you can choose to use a smear of low fluoride toothpaste such as Colgate's “My First Toothpaste", Maclean's "Milk Teeth", or Oral B’s "Bananas in Pyjamas".
It is recommended that children start to visit the dentist from about four years of age. An early check-up will ensure:
• Your child is not afraid to come to the dentist;
• He/she becomes familiar with the operator, as well as the sights, sounds and smells of the dental environment;
• Early detection of tooth decay or any other problems;
• Dental staff are able to give appropriate advice on tooth brushing, and healthy eating and drinking habits;
• Provides the opportunity for parents/care givers to discuss potential issues relating to teething, thumb sucking, orthodontic concerns, medical issues and influences of medication as well as daily preventative routines and fluoride supplementation (for non-fluoridated areas).
8
THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP: Allow your child to visit from a very early age with you or with older siblings; Avoid alarming words such as ‘drill’ and ‘needle’. We have special words and explanations instead; Have positive views and expectations yourself. Explain the visit will be ‘fun’, that we are going to ‘count’ the teeth, give the teeth a ‘tickle’ and learn how to keep our teeth ‘happy’. Young children will do much better if they are seen in the mornings when they are still fresh, before they become tired after a long or busy day; Try to arrive a little early for your appointment, so that your child is not feeling rushed. A quick trip to the toilet is always a good idea! Try to let the dentist speak directly to your child so as to capture and hold their complete attention.

When brushing your child's teeth it may be easier to lay your little one in your lap with their head resting against your arm in a cradling position. This gives you more control and makes your baby feel safe and secure. As your child grows your vision and access can be improved by assisting the brushing (especially at the back of the mouth) by standing behind your child with their head gently tilted backwards.
mum or dad or an older sibling as kids love to do things just "like the big people do!" Brushing teeth in the bath, or brushing of imaginary teeth on a toy, can also be fun.
Brush along the chewing surfaces using a soft gentle scrubbing motion. Use a circular or jiggling motion on the inside and outside surfaces of the teeth ensuring that the gums are reached in both arches. Be especially careful to make sure that the teeth all the way to the back of the mouth are brushed as well as behind the lower front teeth, where plaque accumulates and goes hard quickly.
Remember however, that many toddlers cannot avoid swallowing the toothpaste, so only use a pea-sized amount of low fluoride paste for children aged between two and six years (unless otherwise recommended by your dentist/therapist). Children under the age of two years should use little or no toothpaste.
Try making tooth brushing fun for the reluctant tooth brusher by singing or playing games whilst brushing, or by encouraging children to mimic
If your child does not like the taste of toothpaste use water only or experiment with different brands of junior toothpastes until you find a flavour that your child prefers.

HOME
A comfortable, efficient and welcoming home and garden is what we all aspire to having. A safe place in which to bring our children up, to share meal times, in some cases to earn paid work in and of course to relax together as a family. If all this can be done on a tight budget then even better. This month Cairns Kids Magazine has pulled together the words of wisdom from three local women in business to share decorating, organising and entertaining tips to brighten up your home and garden and therefore your lifestyle. But beware, the children may not want to ever leave your property!

NURSERY When your baby arrives you will be the centre of its universe, and that universe seems to be mostly based in the nursery. Therefore, it is important to make this room a sanctuary for you both – a calm, comfortable place where you can be together and get to know each other. According to Julianne Steer from Hire for Baby, it’s a good idea to get your baby’s nursery organised when you’re about six or seven months pregnant, meaning you are still able to get around fairly easily. There is some planning involved in getting this room ready, and as most mums know, thinking through all of the different possibilities can take up endless hours, but, as tempting and exciting as it is to buy a nursery full of baby gear before the birth, Julianne says it's probably wiser to buy just a few essentials and then spend carefully as the need arises. You should also enquire about hiring equipment that you won’t need for longer than six months.
To assist you in this process Julianne has compiled a list of equipment that you might like to consider for your nursery: COT This will most likely be one of your largest financial outlays. One way to ensure this is money cleverly spent could be to consider buying a cot that converts to a toddler bed. If you are buying a second-hand cot, make sure it complies with Australian Standards, and that the width between the vertical dowels or bars is between 50mm and 95mm, and the top of the mattress to the top of the cot is at least 500mm. Though it is tempting to make your baby’s cot look beautiful and comfortable, it is important to remember the SIDS recommendations and guidelines, which include never using a bumper or pillow in the cot. Another key consideration involves the positioning of your baby’s cot in the nursery. If you are positioning the cot beneath a window, it is vital to make sure there is no curtain or blind cords hanging over the cot that which become a hazard or danger to your baby as they grow. For more information on SIDS visit www.sidsandkids.org
BASSINETTE OR HAMMOCK It is recommended that bassinettes and hammocks be only used for the first three to six months, depending on the individual weight and development of your baby. Hammocks are increasing in popularity, as they are very soothing for colicky babies as it is thought the rhythmic action can relieve nervous tension and relax baby’s muscles. CHANGE TABLE While some may consider this a luxury item, anyone who has any niggling back pain will know how valuable a change table is. It is also very handy for keeping track of nappies, wipes and lotions and creams. Ensure you never leave your baby unattended on the change table due to the risk of rolling and falling, and that you also move any of the accessible lotions and creams to a higher position once baby is able to sit, crawl and/or pull themselves up. CHAIR Whether you need the chair for feeding, reading or late night cuddles, having a comfortable chair, preferably with a foot stool, is a must for any nursery. You will no doubt spend hours in this chair, and it may even double as your bed on some nights! NAPPY DISPOSAL SYSTEM Regardless of whether you buy one of the popular disposal systems on the market, or have a sack of nappy bags and a rubbish bin near the change table, for hygienic safety, ensure you regularly empty the bin.

BABY BATH To save valuable space and money you may consider a change table / bath combination, which has plenty of storage space for all the essentials! MONITOR There are so many different monitors on the market that it is worthwhile spending some time focusing on your individual needs. Decide how you want to use it – do you want to hear everything that goes on in the room, or do you like the idea of the motion sensor pads that some models boast? Whether you have a monitor or not, and how you use it, is your own personal choice. Getting your nursery ready for baby is one of the most exciting adventures for a new mum! There are so many options these days with themes, colours and decorations, but no matter what equipment you opt for, nor whether you chose to buy or hire, you will find there is always space available for love and cuddles!

are not only inexpensive but also easily removable and won’t leave any marks on the walls,” Kathie explains. “The range is continuing to expand and if you can’t find exactly what you want you can have your own design custom made.” Using Wall Decals means even a rented home can have stunning artwork without the need to worry about any problems with the landlord when you move out. A child's room is their space. Parents all too often forget that every member of the family needs their own space and children are no different. Allow your child the freedom to do as they want in their room, within reason. Kathie says whilst they should keep their room tidy, the room should not have to be pristine as a show room for visitors. “Simply learn to close the door and leave your child's space for them, not the visitors,” she says. “Allow them the freedom to feel safe and secure in their room and you will have children that love being at home. This is especially important as they get older and enter the teenage years.”
DÉCOR The decoration of a child’s room should always be contemplated from the child’s perspective. Kathie Holmes from Décor By Design says this means getting down on your knees or sitting on the floor and looking at the walls and lighting from a child’s height. Do this in both during the day and night so you can be sure there are no shadows that will cause little imaginations to get scared. Kathie says the other thing to remember is that children change. “Don't spend thousands on decorating a child's first room and then begrudge them wanting to change it when they start school,” she says. “The cute little bunnies that were lovely to a newborn really won't seem that cute to a five-year-old boy who loves trucks!” Kids go through lots of stages so it's important to keep the room as neutral as possible to allow for simple changes to make them love their room. Keeping the walls a fairly neutral colour means you can add soft furnishings whenever you need to. It's easy enough to change the doona, curtains and artwork. One of the great products on the market is Wall Decals. “These are fantastic for kids rooms as they

VEGETABLE GARDENS FOR KIDS
Bosco Bear Giraffe Wall Feature
Children love to get dirty and potter around in the dirt. They can experiment by eating it, making mud pies, and covering themselves as well as their siblings with it! Local garden designer Posy Thompson, who operates Every Bloomin’ Thing, believes children should have their own vegetable gardens and be encouraged to understand the vegetables chosen and how to plant with care.
Five tips to remember when decorating a child’s room: Use neutral colours when painting a room – this will allow maximum time to pass before needing to paint again. Look for interesting lighting options – visit your local lighting and fan shop for some inspiration – A basic chandelier will make any little girl’s room into that of a princess, or a basic white ball pendant can become the moon every evening in the little astronaut’s room.
“I feel children deserve to have the freedom to play with dirt, grow fresh produce and be proud of their achievements,” Posy says. “Coming from Kenya my children grew up with mud under their nails, a love for the outdoors and complete responsibility for their actions and play.” “Once they’ve started and begun to explore there will be no stopping them,” Posy says.
If your child is old enough to participate, let them help you with some of the decision making. Present them with two or three colours that you are happy with and ask them to choose. If you do choose to do a ‘themed’ room that is highly specific (cartoon character, fairy tale etc), use only one wall and make the themed accessories ‘temporary’ items only. Theme the rooms as an overall idea, a certain animal or group of animals, spots, stripes or something else that is fun, funky but not too targeted at age or gender. This way you will get the most out of your décor. When buying furniture pick pieces which will adapt to your child’s growth and changes in interests. Try a basic bed of a neutral colour, drawers or a cupboard that can be utilised no matter what the change in decoration or theme, and light fittings that are interesting but functional and enduring. This will mean money well spent!

how to set up your very own vegetable patch: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Find a place in the garden for a vegie patch, somewhere you can see the children and admire their handy work. A sunny spot is ideal, especially in winter, with only shade in the morning and afternoon. TIME FOR BED – ‘GARDEN’ BED THAT IS! Start with a small garden bed – this can be built up and lined with bricks or rocks. Fill the bed with potting mix and ensure it has good drainage. If you only have a patio or balcony, then opt for small tubs. Have the children place stones at the bottom of the tubs for drainage then add the potting mix. The pots can stand on pavers or on little terracotta ‘pot feet’ to help with drainage. PLANT AWAY Have the children make little holes in the potting mix with their fingers for the seedlings. Place the seeds or seedlings into these holes and give them water. Keep the seeds and seedlings at least a few centimetres apart. Choose familiar vegetables and fruit, which they would like to eat themselves, like carrots, strawberries, peas, sweet corn, snow peas, cherry tomatoes, lettuce and baby spinach. Letting them grow flowers that they can later pick also adds to the excitement! Try annuals of various bright colours like pansies, marigolds, dianthus, nasturtiums, and petunias. All of these varieties are colourful and easy to grow in our winter climate. There are a wide variety of great seedlings such as these, as well as many others, available right here in Cairns. They can also make little notice

boards with the names of the various vegetables painted or written on with felt pens to display. H2O Buy the children a little watering can to allow them to water their garden daily. They will love watching their vegetables grow and in this day and age it is vital to get children excited about and interested in vegetables from an early age so what better way than to introduce them to foods they can just eat fresh from the garden. VEGETABLE GROWING IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN Too many rules and boundaries will stop children from enjoying their garden and will cause them to lose interest. By allowing the children to play in their garden they will keep interested and by doing this, children can also get their friends involved, who will then hopefully run home and beg their parents to let them build their own. Help make a scarecrow from an old doll with bright coloured clothes. You can also make it from a stick with a T-bar for arms and a face painted onto an old material bag, topped with an old hat. It is also important to keep praising and encouraging them for their efforts. But most importantly, have fun with your kids, explore and experiment together in the garden. You will be amazed at all the exciting and enjoyable family moments you create!

Many mothers adopt the tip of “sleep when they sleep” to get them through the sleep-deprived days following a baby’s arrival. Kanimbla mother Renee Maher agrees. In this issue of Cairns Kids Magazine Renee shares with us her experiences as first-time mum to 16-month-old Patrick. Are you originally from Cairns? No, I am from Murwillumbah in northern New South Wales. I followed my now husband Tom here several years ago. What do you like about raising your child in Cairns? The climate (especially in the cooler months!) and the ease of getting around. Was having your child like you thought it would be? Mostly, yes, although the sleep deprivation early on is something that is difficult to prepare yourself for. I was pleasantly surprised how
16
much you can actually still do with a small baby, like going out to dinner. It is easy when they are not mobile and still sleep a lot. We certainly took advantage of it! Does your child’s name have a special meaning and why did you choose it? Patrick is my paternal greatgrandfather's name and Tom and I both liked it. Are you a full-time parent or is your child in some sort of care? I am lucky enough to be a full-time parent during the week while Tom
works. I have a Saturday job as a Pharmacist which allows Tom or other family members to take care of Patrick on Saturdays. What is a normal day like for your family? We try to keep to a routine. Usually I will go out in the morning and be home in time for Patrick's lunchtime-ish sleep. The afternoons I spend doing work around the house and going for walks with Patrick. I find that if it is possible, getting out of the house once a day, even just to grab something for dinner, is a great way to minimise their boredom.
julyaug09_draft_5_32pages:Layout 1
Is your child taking part in any activities? Nothing structured yet. Patrick loves water and so in the warmer months swimming is a favourite. What is your family’s favourite activity? We loved doing the Red Arrow Walk when Patrick was smaller and would fit comfortably into his baby carrier. He loved the bouncing motion when being carried. Now I would have to say just spending time together outdoors. Does your family have a favourite spot in Cairns? The Esplanade is great and when time permits we go for a walk and then have a swim in the Lagoon. What is your child’s favourite game? Patrick loves balls so throwing them around in the backyard with him is always fun. And he is ALWAYS excited when we go to

housework done when Patrick slept as a small baby and I won't do that next time around!
What is your child’s favourite food? He eats anything, but I would have to say he is particularly fond of bananas.
Tell us about your birth experience. I was very fortunate to have a trouble-free birth. I was induced 11 days over, and had a natural, drug-free birth with no complications. As I have said to many people, I found coming home with a new baby more daunting than the birthing process.
What is the most memorable moment with your child? His first swim (in a pool) was very exciting, as was his first time in the waves at the beach in Kingscliff, NSW. And more recently his first steps, which Tom and I were both lucky enough to witness. Are you planning to have more children? Yes, two or three in total would be nice. What is your best sleeping tip? It's a cliche but 'sleep when they sleep', especially when they are very young. I opted to get
Words of wisdom to expecting parents? Do what YOU think is best for you and your baby, even if someone or something else says otherwise. The intuition of parents, I have found, is rarely misplaced.

family therapy - intimacy after birth Pregnancy and birth will almost always have a significant impact on the physical and emotional states of the mother and father, and it takes time to adjust to these changes once you have arrived home with your beautiful newborn. The process of bonding is very important following the birth for all in this new family, this includes the reconnecting of mum and dad; however it does not necessarily come naturally and can take time for some to rekindle the passion in their lives. Fatigue and the birth experience often can affect a woman’s desire for intimacy following the arrival of the newborn and this is quite normal. Women of newborns often feel torn between trying to
adapt the very demanding role of mothering their infant and spending time with partners (if not a single parent), other children, family and friends. All of this and a huge dose of sleep deprivation often leads to physical and emotional exhaustion which leave little time for romance let alone feelings of sexual desire!
Here are few tips which may be useful: Get as much rest and sleep as possible. Catching an hour of sleep in the daytime while your baby is sleeping can make a world of difference to you, your partner and your relationship. A daily walk is vital for good physical and emotional wellbeing – ten minutes will make a difference to how you feel and if you can do this as a family even better. Your personal self care is vital, take a few minutes a day for yourself. Get out of those pj’s and do something that makes you feel good about you. Remember not to stop the basic acts of love which include cuddles, kisses and some ‘us time’ every day.
Don’t rush sexual intimacy. Take your time and talk about the ways you can express your love for each other until your body is ready and the time is right. Accept help from family and friends this can allow you and your partner some ‘us time’. If you have any concerns about sexual intimacy following the arrival of your newborn talk to your midwife or doctor. Help is available. Family therapy is supplied by Birdwing Therapies which provides parenting and children’s programs. Contact Keran for further info on phone: 4041 3504 or visit www.birdwingtherapies.com.au

women’s wellbeing building your self-esteem Self-esteem is one of the most important factors influencing a person’s well-being. A low self-esteem is often at the core of many psychological difficulties such as anxiety and depression. It is also common in people who have communication or relationship difficulties. So what is self-esteem and how can you improve it? Self-esteem means selfrespect. It comes from our self-image. A person with a high self-esteem has a positive self-image whereas a person with low self-esteem has a poor or negative selfimage.
Your self image is what you believe to be true about yourself. Sometimes you may base your self-image on the opinions of others. Things you may have heard people say about you, what other people have told you or what others did to you may contribute to how you view yourself. The problem with this is that if other people view you negatively then this will cause you to a have a negative self-image. We cannot control what others think or say about us and often others’ opinions of us are inaccurate or unimportant anyway! Viewing yourself as a
20
unique and worthy individual and worrying less about what other people think of you will help you to have a positive self-image. So what situations effect your self-esteem? For many women, their self-esteem has been influenced by situations where they have been made to feel inferior. Experiencing failure or inequalities, being criticised, rejected or abused and feeling unloved can all contribute to feelings of low self-esteem. When you have a low selfesteem you may feel sad, inferior, angry, jealous, rejected or lonely.

How can you build your self-esteem? Revisit your interests and goals: Make a list of things you’d like to do and learn. Regularly take steps towards achieving your goals. Evaluate your environment. Identify the people in your life who are critical of you and spend less time with them. Spend more time with those people who appreciate and support you. Avoid being self-critical. No one is perfect!
Acknowledge your strengths, qualities and accomplishments. Stop comparing yourself to others and viewing yourself as inferior. View yourself as being of equal worth. Try being more assertive. Speak up for yourself and express your needs and wants. Be okay with saying “no”. Spend some time with yourself at the end of each day. Review what happened and how you felt during the day. Write about it in a private journal. If you are feeling bad about yourself, consider contacting a therapist. A therapist can help you identify thoughts that are contributing to your low self-esteem and replace them with ones that make you feel good about yourself. If you have self-esteem issues contact Charlene at Women’s Psychological Health on 4031 8095 to arrange a consultation.
Self-image forms from a very early age. Just like your self-esteem was influenced by your childhood so too is your children’s. If your self-esteem is high you are able to role model this for your children. It will also be easier for you to encourage your children to have a positive view of themselves.
Women’s wellbeing is supplied by Charlene Halfhyde from Women’s Psychological Health. Charlene can be contacted on 4031 8095 for individual or group therapy for women aged 16 and above

fitness tips with Simone here are some basic guidelines to get you on the right track: Eat regularly – every 2 – 4 hours. Aim to have 2 pieces of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables in a day. Keep portion sizes under control by using smaller dinner plates. Drink plenty of water – aim for about 5% of your body weight in litres, i.e. if you are 60 kg then your daily water consumption would be approximately 3 litres. This is especially important here in Cairns where the weather is warmer. Prepare healthy snacks and always carry them with you – nuts, dried fruit, cut up fresh vegetables, piece of fruit. Eliminate soft drinks, juice and flavoured milks from your diet – these just add extra kilojoules to your daily intake. Opt for water with a squirt of lemon or lime to give it flavour. If you must have something go for diet soft drinks or diet cordial, these have little or no kilojoules.
Healthy eating, we all know we should do it, we all have the best intention to do it, and yet we all have a million reasons why we don’t do it. So, I want to equip you with some basic advice and tools that may help you get your eating, and that of your family, back on track. To eat well, start by planning for three healthy meals a day, and three healthy snacks. It’s important to plan to ensure that your food choices are the best for you. That means that you are eating foods filled with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein and healthy fats. Preparation and planning is the key.
22
If you do over-indulge, don’t starve yourself for punishment – get active and move your body to burn the extra calories – a brisk walk, a gym class or maybe playing with your little one for an hour – starving will just slow your metabolism. As much as possible eat natural – eliminate processed foods and only eat what comes in nature’s own wrapper. Never shop on an empty stomach – ensure that you have had a healthy snack before you hit the supermarket, this will keep you on track to make healthy purchases, and then shop to your prepared list so you can feel fantastic when you unpack and look at how well you’ve set yourself up to eat for energy and vitality.

if you are dining out, try some of these tricks: Share a main with a friend, this will help keep portions down. Before you go enjoy a salad or some vegetables to help fill you slightly and also get your vegetable serves in. Aim for healthier meals, grilled steak, chicken, fish with some potato and vegetables versus a large bowl of creamy pasta. Eat until you’re satisfied not until your plate is empty, for the $2 $3 worth of food you leave on your plate, you can save yourself kilos of weight gain!
If you are really struggling with food, then see a nutritionist or dietician that can look at your individual needs and help you to find the right balance. Eating is one of life’s necessities, and it can also be one of life’s great pleasures. Making good choices means that you will feel better, look better and you can enjoy eating a whole lot more.

BABY WELCOMING CEREMONY
The Welcoming Babies Ceremony is a new initiative of the Cairns Regional Council to celebrate births in our region. The welcoming ceremony will imitate a national citizenship ceremony with each baby being presented with a welcoming certificate and a native Australian tree by Mayor Val Schier. Cr Schier said that this ceremony was a celebration of new life and Cairns Regional Council is working hard to ensure we leave a good legacy for these future custodians. “It’s a wonderful way to welcome these young babies into the community and a fun day for families to celebrate their baby being born into this wonderful region,” Cr Schier said. “These babies are the future custodians of this unique tropical region and reinforce why Council is making decisions now to ensure the lifestyle that we all enjoy is preserved for future generations.” The Welcoming Babies Ceremony will be held Sunday 30 August, 1.30 – 4.00pm at the Cairns
24
Regional Council building 119-145 Spence Street, Cairns. The aim of the first Welcoming Babies Ceremony, an event that will be held annually, is not only to officially welcome babies born to residents of the Cairns Regional Council area but also to help connect their parents with the full range of Council facilities available. Planned festivities include free family entertainment, free children’s activities, stalls and refreshments as well as a certificate and tree presentation. Families who have welcomed a baby during 2008 and 2009 are invited to take part in this special ceremony by registering their baby by Wednesday 19 August. A registration form is available on page 15 of this publication or on the Council website www.cairns.qld.gov.au
