YOUTH GRANTS Nominations for the 2022 Youth Sport Star Awards are now open. Cassowary Coast Regional Councillor and Community and Culture portfolio holder Trudy Tschui said the annual Sport Star Awards continues to support youth across the Cassowary Coast in their sporting achievements. “The Cassowary Coast Regional Council supports and recognises youths who demonstrate commitment and achievement to their chosen sport. A total of seven bursaries will be awarded this year to Cassowary Coast youth.” Cr Tschui said that there was a broad range of categories, including a category for Youth with a Disability Sports Person. Statistics have shown that the participation rate for males and females by age group, shows that people with a disability had consistently lower rates of participa-

tion in sport than people with no disability across all age groups. “Sport and shared physical activities help improve people’s health and wellbeing, and foster a strong sense of community belonging and pride and the awards aim to promote, encourage and sustain sporting participation and healthy lifestyles in the Cassowary Coast.” The grant was launched in 2020, as an annual initiative to encourage and sustain sporting opportunities in the Cassowary Coast Region for youth aged between 8 to 18 years old. The grant consists of seven bursaries and recipients for each bursary will be awarded $750 and a branded polo shirt. The grant aims to recognise significant sporting achievements in the following seven bursaries criterias:

RECONCILIATION BREAKFAST

June 03, 2022

HIGHLIGHTS

…FROM ORDINARY COUNCIL MEETING 26 MAY 2022

Pictured _L-R) - Richard Graham, Brett Ambrum, Jonas Gumbleton and Mayor Mark Nolan

Last week Councillors, Mamu Health Services, community members and students attended a Reconciliation Breakfast which was held at the Tully Multipurpose Centre. The morning featured a live stream of the reconciliation breakfast held at Parliament House and speeches. Brett Ambrum, Marketing and Engagement Manager of Mamu Health Services, Mayor Mark Nolan, Principal Richard Graham and Tully State High Student and Indigenous Leader Jonas Gumbleton all spoke on the importance of reconciliation and what it means

for our community. The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians. The annual celebration is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

SAND NOURISHMENT PROGRAM ON DUNK ISLAND COMPLETE

The Sand Nourishment Program on Dunk Island is now complete, with rehabilitation and replenishment works conducted at the Jetty area and surrounds to combat ongoing erosion. The works, undertaken by Cassowary Coast Regional Council, consisted of relocating sand sourced from Palloon Beach near Dunk Island Spit, to the shores around the Jetty structure. The sand nourishment

works were carried out under a Marine Park Authority permit and will protect the area from ongoing erosion and ensure erosion is effectively managed into the future. Due to the location of the erosion, this area cannot be protected from erosion with a hard structure or sea wall, therefore the relocation of sand every two or three years is necessary. The works involved heavy machinery carting and relocat-

ing sand between these areas. Since the completion of the works, all machinery has been removed and public access has been restored. Campsite bookings are available online at www.dunkislandcamp.com.au or via the Mission Beach Visitor Centre. For more information contact Council on 1300 763 903 or via email enquiries@ cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.

Volunteering brings people together and creates stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient communities. Two weeks ago, Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) celebrated National Volunteer Week, to recognise the vital work of volunteers and to say thank you. Council currently hosts over 50 volunteers who generously and tirelessly give their time week in and out for the community, ensuring programs and services across CCRC Libraries, Nurseries and Visitor Information Centres are available to all. Council nursery volunteer Connie Symons, has been volunteering at the Innisfail Nursery for over 20 years. “I originally began volunteer-

ing as I loved trees and wanted to learn more. “I love coming to the nursery, it is a happy place with great, caring people and I always leave feeling relaxed. “Through volunteering at the Nursery I truly feel I am leaving behind a great heritage with trees that will grow for hundreds of years to come,” said Ms Symons. Councillor Trudy Tschui said volunteers like Connie are the backbone of our community. ‘The effort and commitment of volunteers should not be understated, and not just those who volunteer through Council programs, there are many volunteer groups across our region that deserve our thanks and acknowledgement. ‘I am passionate about the

value of volunteering and its positive impacts on our communities. Which is why I have recently taken up a presence at market stalls across the region to actively advocate for and promote community groups seeking new members. If you are a community group that is looking for more volunteers, contact Councillor Trudy Tschui at Trudy.Tschui@ ccrc.qld.gov.au or on 0457 145 983. CAREERS DAY 2022

HELPING YOUTH NAVIGATE THEIR FUTURES

The Cassowary Coast Careers Day is back in 2022 with over 400 students set to attend and network with local businesses on potential future career pathways. Held at Innisfail State College on Thursday 16 June 2022, Careers Day will host neighbouring schools, Tully State High School, Good Counsel College and Babinda State High School. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said last year’s event was a success, with over 30 local businesses attending to connect with prospective employees living within the area.

www.cairnslocalnews.com.au

“The Cassowary Coast is home to a diverse range of businesses and attendees will be able to meet with local employers and understand more about what they do and what types of jobs are available. “This year we already have exhibitors lined up from various industries including healthcare, defence, hospitality, tourism, transport and construction – there will be something for everyone. “Attendees will also be able to ask about career and training pathways, as well as find out information about apprenticeships and traineeships.

“This event is really important for our young people as they start navigating their future career pathways. It helps them to understand there are meaningful career options available to pursue at home in the Cassowary Coast. “We want the youth of today to be part of our region’s exciting future,” said Mayor Nolan. If you would like to be part of Careers Day 2022, contact the Cassowary Coast Regional Council on 1300 763 903 or via email enquiries@ cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.

When you throw food into the wet kerbside bin it ends up buried in landfill. Once covered and compacted, oxygen is removed forcing the food scraps waste to enter an anaerobic break down process. This process releases methane, a greenhouse gas that does a far better job than carbon dioxide at trapping heat thus contributing significantly to global warming. Methane is also highly flammable increasing risk of fires at landfill sites. The solution to these serious problems, recycle organic waste. Separate your food scraps and green waste for composting. Or if you have a worm farm

feed your food scraps to Graffen them. Andrew Chief Executive Officer You can also start looking at ways to avoid food waste for example • Plan before you go shopping to avoid buying extra • Have an eat first section in your fridge/ pantry • Make a stock our of vegetable scraps Remember Council offers households a $20 rebate for their first purchase of a compost bin or worm farm.
