Start of exciting $35m plans for Cairns Showgrounds l PA RR A M AT TA PA R K | Nick Dalton A SENSATIONAL multimillion-dollar future awaits the iconic Cairns Showgrounds after securing a 20-year lease following years of uncertainty. The Cairns Show Association plans to start significant works at the iconic city show-

grounds following the granting of a long-term lease by Cairns Regional Council. The 20-year lease will also allow the association to revisit a $35 million master plan for the site. Association president Ian Allen said the organisation had been living on borrowed time after the council refused

to extend a 15-year lease in October, 2019. He said first the council increased it by three years and then another 12 months. “Twenty years is really significant. It’s great news. It will allow us to do significant improvements,” Mr Allen said. “It’s taken a long time … four years,” he said.

Mr Allen said in the past the association was unable to apply for government and other grants nor borrow money because of the short period of the lease. He said the priority was a new roof on the grandstand. “It’s a big cost. Last time we looked at it, it was $300,000 without scaffolding. Scaffold-

ing will be as much as the roof because it is so high,” Mr Allen said. He said the next project would be airconditioning the Fred Moule Pavilion and improvements to the De Jarlaise function room upstairs, as well as upgrading of toilets throughout the grounds.
