Carols as you’ve never seen them before

TANYA MURPHY Carols by Candelight is an annual occasion in the Cairns Community, but this year it’s appearing in a novel format that has never been seen before. Talented local singers and dancers have been filmed performing the carols at iconic Cairns locations including Upolu Cay on the Great Barrier Reef, Palm Cove Jetty, the Botanic Gardens, and Ellis Beach to name a few. The result is a feature-length film – Carols in Cairns – to ensure the whole community can still enjoy the event while complying with COVID restrictions. With Santa being granted a special exemption to travel to the Far North as an “essential worker”, the jolly big man in red has decided to enjoy a quick holiday in the tropics prior to his expected appearance at the annual carols event. The Carols in Cairns production follows Santa as he makes his way to Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC), showcasing his holiday memories at some of our region’s iconic destinations.

Cairns singer Andrea Allumay performing at Upolu Cay as part of the ‘Carols in Cairns’ production. Singer Chris Lloyds, who will host ‘Carols in Cairns,’ at the Cairns Christmas Tree on Shields Street.

From catching a quick wave at Tobruk Pool to a bungy jump at AJ Hackett, taking a selfie on Cairns Zoom’s PowerJump to a visit to the magnificent Upolu Cay on the Great Barrier Reef,

Santa makes the most of his vacation. Along the way, Santa will also make a stop to turn on the lights at Council’s Christmas Tree, now located in Shields Street, at about 6.40pm, and he will invite the rest of Cairns to do the same at their homes. The original screenplay and production showcases the talents of local producers, musicians, singers and dancers who are filmed with Santa on his holiday as he makes his way to CPAC where he will appear alongside entertainer and this year’s host Chris Lloyds. Local talent featured in the production include Filipinos Cairns Community Choir at the Botanic Gardens, the Cairns Swing Ray Dancers at Palm Cove Jetty, the Voices of AustraNesia at Ellis Beach, the Fingerprint Trio at Lake Morris/Copperlode Falls Dam, Dancescapes, The June Vale Dancers at Gordonvale, The Jazzuleles at Munro Martin Parklands, Andrea Allumay at Upolu Cay and Cairns Young Voices at Cairns Performing Arts Centre. Traditional Christmas carols dominate this year’s program, although there are two original pieces and a rap rewrite of another classic. Cairns Mayor Bob Man-

ning acknowledged 2020 has been a very difficult year and said he hoped Carols in Cairns would provide an enjoyable start to the festive season for families across the city. “With so many challenges, we are having to do many things a little differently this year, including our annual Carols by Candlelight event,” Cr Manning said. “Given COVID restrictions and all that means, we have created this online production to showcase the diversity of our community’s talent and the beauty of our region, while celebrating the festive season.” Major sponsor, Smithfield Shopping Centre, is printing 5000 songbooks, which will be given away at the shopping centre and via media partners, with about 1000 being made available at Cairns Libraries. An electronic copy of the songbook will also be on Council’s website for download. As well as words to the carols, the commemorative songbook features illustrations for children to colour-in. Carols in Cairns will be broadcast on Council’s YouTube platform on Sunday 6 December from 6.30pm. The production will be available to share online with family and friends until January.

Plastic bottles go snorkelling TANYA MURPHY AN extraordinary sight was seen at the Low Isles, on the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas last Monday when Mike Smith went snorkelling with 3,109 plastic bottles strapped to his back. He was joined by local conservationists Dean Miller of Great Barrier Reef Legacy and Christian Miller of Parley for the Oceans in a powerful demonstration of how plastic waste is dragging us and our planet down. “The average Australian buys and throws away a whopping 3,109 single-use plastic bottles of personal care and cleaning products, like laundry liquid and handwash throughout their lifetime,” said Mike. “It’s easy for us to put our plastic bottles into the recycling bin thinking they’ll actually be recycled but the reality is that only 12 per cent of plastic is currently recycled in Australia. “Every year Aussie households use almost one billion plastic bottles worth of personal-care and home-cleaning products, stuff like laundry liquid and handwash.

tra cost for refilling, eliminating plastic waste. Now, to show that keeping your home and body clean doesn’t have to mean trashing the planet, Mike is road-tripping along the east coast of Australia from Cairns to Canberra with his 3,109 bottles in tow, to promote what he calls “the Great Australian Plastic Purge.” Along the way, he’ll be meeting with local legends including celebrities, politicians and environmentalists to invite them to join him in a series of unusual moments involving 3,109 bottles.

single-use plastics can only be a good thing. It’s easy to forget in our day-to-day lives to choose wisely at the store, to recycle correctly, and to manage our plastic impact on the environment. This approach helps solve all three,” he said. To rid your life of 3,109 plastic bottles that are dragging you and the planet down, you can order your refillable “forever bottles” and your product pouches from www.zeroco.com.au

He’ll kayak down the Brisbane River, surf at the Gold Coast, paddle board in Byron Bay, and ride a tinny in Sydney Harbour, and paddle-boat across Lake Burley Griffin towards parliament house in Canberra on the last day of Parliament for 2020. Local marine biologist Dr Dean Miller said Mike’s initiative would help protect the ocean. “Any initiative that helps reduce our dependence on

“The vast majority of that plastic ends up in landfill, or worse, the ocean. “If we can educate Aussies on how simple it is to change their habits and choose to refill and return instead, together we can solve this plastic problem.” The desire to solve this problem inspired Mike to start Zero Co, a line of eco-friendly personal care and cleaning products which are delivered in collapsible pouches which can be mailed back at no ex-

Trinity Accountants owner Sue Sherrington FNQHF CEO Tony Williamson

Accountants support Foundation The drive to bring early detection prostate cancer equipment to the region received a boost last week with a fundraising lunch generating more than $70,000 towards the cause. Local business, Trinity Accountants hosted an end of year client lunch which included a fundraising auction and raffle on behalf of the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation. Trinity Accountants owner Sue Sherrington said they wanted to bring their clients together in what had been a challenging year, and unite for a great, local cause. “We’ve been working with the Foundation for a few years now, we contributed to the endoscopy campaign, and we see the amazing work they do in the communi-

ty,” Mrs Sherrington said.

The funds raised from the lunch will go to support the Foundation’s goal of buying Cairns Hospital urology equipment that will enable the early detection of prostate cancer.

The risk of prostate cancer increases with age.

According to data from the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Registry, there are 3900 new diagnoses of prostate cancer in Queensland each year, of which 360 are in FNQ (9.2% of the Queensland total). “Approximately 40 percent of FNQ patients go on to have surgery as their primary treatment,” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service urologist Dr Stefan Antoniou. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australian men, according to the

Foundation CEO Tony Williamson was thrilled with the initiative and the sort of community support that it showed. “Lots of people in the community have been really suffering this year but events like this are a wonderful way to bring people together and support each other,” Mr Williamson said. “This has been an incredible initiative, it’s been a great day with incredible support. Thank you so much to the team at Trinity Accountants,” he said.

Multipoint plan addresses youth crime NICOLE GIBSON A whopping 68% of Cairns residents do not feel safe due to crime according to Cairns Regional Council’s recent Our Cairns survey, prompting calls for high level changes to address the issue. The results come as no surprise to the Crime and Justice Action Group (CJAG) who saw support swell from 11 members at the time of founding in March this year, to more than 8500 presently. CJAG was formed when a group of neighbours on Cairns’ Southside banded together after increasing crimes rates left them fearing for themselves and their families. Recognising contributing factors across multiple areas, they devised a 12-point integrated plan which focuses on accountability at all levels. Points one and two of the plan are focused on parent and public administration service accountability which CJAG spokesperson Aaron

McLeod said provides the foundations for the long-term success of the entire plan. “If the integrity of delivering accountability for parents who are on the frontline and the administrators such as justice, the police and agencies, if they’re not made accountable with systems to ensure accountability then what we do is have a failure in the other areas,” Mr McLeod said. The plan also calls for the definition of a serious youth offender to be added to the Criminal Code. “The change of definition at a high level is key because it picks up those serious offenders a lot earlier than what they’re currently being picked up,” he said. Mr McLeod said early identification of serious youth offenders meant intervention and rehabilitation, which is also a key part of the groups plan, could occur much earlier and was key to reducing crime rates long-term.

To address rehabilitation, CJAG are calling for the construction of an education and employment sentencing academy for serious youth offenders. “Locking kids up is not the answer,” Mr McLeod said. “This is a long-term specialist academy that has a connection to the youth corrections system where youth that have come from the youth justice system are being managed, especially if they’re serious offenders particularly.” The academy will offer offenders a prescriptive diagnosis targeting the cause of an individual’s offending then provides programs including mental health, nutrition and wellness, skills building and education, with pathways into employment, training and entrepreneurship. “The core focus of the facility is around health, employment and being able to achieve work discipline.”

ANDREW and Kerstin Brown are ready for a new chapter in their lives as they plan to retire and sell their business, Collins Booksellers in Smithfield, which they opened 33 years ago.

“We’ll be able to see the family more and get involved in the community.”

Originally from England and Sweden, Andrew and Kerstin have lived in Cairns since 1974 and owned AB Books in Smithfield for nine years before starting Collins Booksellers. Mr and Mrs Brown said the store would close in late January if no buyer could be found. “Over the years we’ve seen generations of families coming back to the store and have met some really lovely people,” she said. “We’re grateful to the local community for supporting our shop over the years.” Mrs Brown said they were looking forward to having more time to read for pleasure and relax. “We’ve got a couple of acres and I love gardening and

Mrs Brown said books had remained as popular as ever over the decades. “I don’t think e-books had as big of an impact on books as was expected, because people like having a real book,” she said. “Plus, books make great gifts. And with reference books and textbooks, people like to make notes and see pictures and browse the pages.” She said their shop was busier than ever during COVID-19. “Books are a great way to keep both adults and children entertained without having to go outside,” she said. Mrs Brown said her favourite book was ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak while Mr Brown said his favourite book series was the classic ‘Alexandria Quartet’ by Lawrence Durrell, or any science fiction book.

Guilt-free coffee for Cairns IT WILL be it easier to get a caffeine fix without a side of single-use plastics in Cairns, with Council feeding hundreds of new re-useable ‘swap and go’ cups into the region’s cafes. The re-useable cups can be borrowed free, like a library book, as long as they are returned to a participating café within 30 days. Around half of the participating 11 cafes are in and around the city, said Cairns Mayor Bob Manning. “It has been more difficult to get a plastic-free takeaway coffee in the wake of COVID-19,” Cr Manning said. “A swap and go system is one of the few options for takeaway coffee that is COVID-safe and environmentally-responsible at the moment. “Council has purchased an additional 300 reusable takeaway cups to assist with

the roll-out of the swap and go system in Cairns as a part of our commitment to supporting the community in reducing single-use plastics.” Many of the cafes participating are also members of the Plastic Free Cairns program, another plastic-reduction program supported by Council. The cups, which are made from recycled plastic in Queensland, can be returned unwashed. They are commercially cleaned. Each customer receives a freshly cleaned cup when ordering their drink. And patrons can have up to two cups out at a time, so forgetting once is not a problem. The Green Caffeen app is used to keep track of the cups. Green Caffeen operates an Australia-wide re-useable coffee cup swap and go system, avoiding over 60,000

Cairns Courtyard Café owner Adrienne Vearing loves the idea of keeping coffee cups out of landfill single-use takeaway cups. Over 250 people in Cairns have already signed up to the scheme. One of the participating cafes operates at the Cairns Regional Council chambers. Cairns Courtyard Café owner Adrienne Vearing said they serve up an estimated 150 cups of coffee to Council staff and community members every day. “We serve up around 750

coffees a week so, if everyone got on board, we would be able to avoid about 1,500 items of waste a week when you count the lids and cups. But even if we save 100 cups a week from going to landfill, I’ll be happy,” said Ms Vearing. “A lot of our customers buy takeaway coffee, but they don’t go very far away to drink it - usually to their office – so returning the cups will be easy.

“We had a big push on bringing your own cup a while back and we can’t offer that now, so this is a great alternative.” The scheme is free for participating cafes and is consistent with requirements in the Queensland Health COVID Safe Industry Plan. Similar schemes operating in Cairns include HuskeeSwap. Cafes and food retailers can access free, tailored support to reduce plastic

packaging from Plastic Free Cairns ahead of the Queensland Government single-use plastic ban in July 2021. The program is run by the Boomerang Alliance, funded by the Queensland Government and supported by Cairns Regional Council. A man named Tom Nicholson posted on his Facebook account the sports car that he had just bought and how a man approached and told him that the money used to buy this car could’ve fed thousands of less fortunate people.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY Recently the Douglas Shire Council canvassed the thought of residents regarding the Daintree River crossing options. This issue was always bound to polarise residents, and threatened to create considerable unrest within the community. True to its word, Council opened discussions and the results were not surprising.

His response to this man made him famous on the internet. READ his story as stated on Facebook below: A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said, “I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that sports car cost?

NSW BUSHFIRES & MURRAY/DARLING

I don’t understand why the co-relation hasn’t been made. We are told the Rivers are at their driest and it is very obvious they are being over used and abused. I, like millions of others, appreciate the Murray Darling is not like other majors rivers. The M/D flows through a semi desert in the middle of a quite barren country. I actually see it, presently, as a huge dry swamp. When it is fullest it must pump tonnes of humidity into the atmosphere. Storing the rain then rising like it does in the tropics. In its’ present state it is like a piece of damp ground. It covers a huge area from Adelaide to Tambo in QLD across to and south along the Great Divide right back to Adelaide. Right in the path of North and West winds. It has been abused with subsequent governments allowing it to be drained for profit with no appreciation of its’ huge inherent importance in this country. Having been drained I believe it no longer adds humidity to the atmosphere especially when the hot Westerly winds

blow. So bad is the influence of low humidity in these winds that NSW is now the worst affected by bushfires. Yet I know, having been around for a few decades, that Tassie and especially Victoria & SA were always the worst affected previously. Why has nobody done the scientific calculations that I believe would prove the M/D produces the humidity that could lessen the bushfires. And while we are on the subject. Why did I only see water tanks fighting the fires, in one instance with a galah playing up for the camera. I never saw one frame with anybody using a rake or hoe as they did thousands of times in the past. Water is the ultimate, especially in high growth, but I do know that many a fire was stopped with the use of tools designed for the job. Water has to be carted and is labour intensive. In a country with sparse population and little water available. John. Bungalow

“It was a touching experience, which will be a lasting memory for the children,” said school principal Mark Allen.

She and her mother also started blood donation charity ‘Missy’s Donors.’

“It was a powerful symbol of the Malanda Family.” Missy fought leukaemia for four years and was the 2019 Cancer Council daffodil day ambassador, as well as doing a lot of media work for charities, including a cameo

“It’s just so easy to donate blood, it costs you nothing and there is always a need for blood,” said Missy’s mother Anj Mittelstadt. “Our goal this year is for 2020 donations, each donation saves three lives so that’s 6060 lives Missy’s Donors could possibly save.”

Anj has now set up a website and charity called ‘This strong mum’ which sells red ‘Missy Donor’ T-shirts. “100 per cent of the proceeds from T-shirts go to parents in need through support and information,” she said. Prepare in advance

PETER MCCULLAGH

THE best time to prepare your home is now. Understanding your risks is the key to any preparations to secure and protect your property which will improve the safety of your home during a bushfire, storm, flood or cyclone. Undertaking general maintenance is a vital first step. Check the condition of your roof, gutters and trim any large or overhanging trees. Secure any loose items outside your home and perhaps arrange for a builder to inspect your roof and other structural items. Outdoor furniture can be an issue during a storm, cyclone or high wind events. Chairs and tables can easily become a flying missile and should be secured safely. Garbage bins and wheelie bins also need securing to prevent them blowing and potentially becoming a dangerous missile.

Make sure you have building and contents insurance in place. Once a cyclone is forecast many insurance companies will refuse to provide new policies. Identify which room in your house is the strongest in case you need to retreat and shelter. The preferred room is small, without windows, many people find the bathroom best suits their needs. Identify where and how to turn off power, water and other essential services as a safety precaution and ensure all windows are securely closed and even covered if possible. Ensure you have your emergency kit and important documents packed and handy before an emergency is declared. If you live in a flood or storm surge prone area, make sure all items and ve-

hicles are stored well above any potential flood or storm surge water levels. If you have a generator, ensure you understand how to safely operate it and that it is full of fuel and regularly run and serviced. Also be sure to run your generator in a well ventilated area. While sheltering, tune into local radio for ongoing advice and warnings. Internet services may still be operating through your mobile phone service. Tether your laptop of tablet to your phone to also keep an eye on the emergency management and BOM websites. Hot Dogs are not good WOULD you run around outside during summer wearing a thick woollen jumper? Most likely not. However for our pets, dogs and cats, they do not have a choice, they cannot take their coat off and cool down. It looks like it’s going to be a big summer, so crank the air conditioning up at home and in the car. We will be right, but what about our most loyal mates, our dogs.

Summer can be brutal for them; high temperatures combined with oppressive humidity can make life very difficult for our four legged best mates. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can wreak utter havoc on your canine friend, but there are a few things you can do to keep your dog cool and safe this summer. Prevention is always better than cure so take a few simple steps to keep your dog safe. Dogs are just not as

well equipped as humans to cope with the sweltering north Queensland temperatures.

Taking your dog for a run or walk at midday can lead to disaster. Walk your dog in the early morning or late afternoon, well after the heat of the day has passed. Whilst we might cope with a walk or a run during the day, would we feel so upbeat if we went for a run whilst wearing a full fur coat? Before walking your dog on the footpath or road, test the temperature of the surface, if you cannot hold your

hand on it for 5 seconds it is too hot for your pet to walk on.

Dogs cool by panting. They do not sweat like we do. It takes longer for them to cool down, so it is easy to overheat. Dogs sleeping on a elevated trampoline style bed allows for air flow and reduces heal build up in bedding.

of time.

The RSPCA report that it takes no more than six minutes for a dog locked in a car during summer to suffer from heat stroke due to excessive temperatures. Tell-tale signs your dog is struggling with heat stroke or exhaustion. • Excessive panting

Ensure there’s ample supply of fresh water for your dog. Multiple water bowls placed in the shade and frequently topped up, and also add ice cubes to the water to drop the temperature is a great idea.

• Drooling

Another great way to cool your dog on a hot day is to spray them with a fine mist. Or if you have the room a shell or paddling pool in the back yard is a great way to encourage your dog to seek a cooler spot during the day.

• Mental confusion

Labradors love the water but some of your other breeds may need some encouragement to use the wading pool. Dogs love to go for a drive with us. We head off to the shops and take them with us. In our modern cars, with an abundance of glass, temperatures can rapidly become fatal, if we leave them locked in our cars, even for the briefest

| 17

• Restlessness • Very red or pale gums • Bright red tongue • Breathing distress • Vomiting and Diarrhoea • Dizziness and staggering What to do if you think your dog has sunstroke. Contact your local vet immediately. Position your dog inside under a fan or in air conditioning. Wipe the bottom of their paws with a cool wet cloth, or dip their paws in a bowl of water. Pour cool water around their neck and try to keep them comfortanble and as cool as possible. But the best advice is to get your best mate to a vet as soon as you can.

Caring for our pets this Christmas We dearly love our animals, and at Christmas we are tempted to spoil them. The RSPCA believe we should leave the dressing up to humans and leave our pets alone. Dressing pets in costumes can cause distress and stress in our pets, restricting their movement. Obvious signs of discomfort that your pet might show when dressed up include difficulty moving normally (including ‘freezing’) and signs of anxiety such as panting, lip licking, or showing the white of their eye (also called whale eye). If the pet is trying or struggling to remove the costume, they are uncomfortable, and you should remove the clothing immediately. While some dogs may tolerate simple costumes, cats generally aren’t okay with being dressed up at all. So if you have a cat, think about other ways to have fun with them this holiday season.

Locals Turn To Free Tai Chi In Challenging Year

Yarrabah’s new radio announcers EIGHT students from Yarrabah might soon be gracing our airways as radio announcers for Yarrabah Radio 92.9FM after participating in radio training at North Regional TAFE Queensland. They have joined Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees from a range of remote Queensland communities in Cairns to receive training that will enable them to pursue exciting media careers. The Yarrabah students, along with others from Wujal Wujal, Kowanyama, Doomadgee, Lockhart River and Brisbane are currently participating in a two-week block of practical radio training, with three more training blocks to occur in the first half of 2021. The students are working towards a nationally recognised Certificate III in Media (Radio) by studying at the TAFE campus and also doing practical hands-on training at

Friday December 4, 2020

the Black Star 96.7 Radio Studio, run by Queensland Remote Aboriginal Media (QRAM) in Cairns.

“Students are working towards being announcers in their local community as part of our Black Star FM Radio network that transmits into 19 sites across the Northern Peninsula Area, the Cape, the Gulf of Carpentaria, Cooktown, the Tablelands, Yarrabah and Woorabinda,” said QRAM General manager Candice Siedler-Twine. “Or they could become one of the media stars of the future in Indigenous or commercial media anywhere in Australia. “The students are learning highly practical skills such as content gathering, presentation, interviewing and announcing skills as well as learning Australian strict broadcasting regulations. “They’re also getting a unique chance working with

our dedicated and experienced team in the use of specialised studio software and equipment and are receiving work experience in a live studio and a recording of their work to take away with them.” Mrs Vicki Jones, Director of Community Services at Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council said they were excited to officially open the 92.9FM Radio Station at the Yarrabah Knowledge Centre. “We are excited to bring residents local news, content and interviews under the QRAM Black Star FM banner,” she said. As part of their training, students will also participate in QRAM’s new Stayin’ eSafe project, which will use radio segments and other resources to address issues like online safety and cyberbullying in remote communities.

A HAPPY group of locals is loving Active8 Free Fitness Tai Chi classes at Rex Smeal Park. Up to 50 participants have jumped out of bed each week to attend the Tuesday morning class at 9am since it was launched in October last year. The group celebrated their strong attendance and health outcomes with morning tea at the picturesque park in Port Douglas this week. Douglas Shire Council’s Sport and Recreation Officer Renee Ker said she was keen to continue the popular program next year.

“It is looking really positive for future programs in the new year, Douglas Shire Council is hitting the participation targets and we are currently preparing a grant application for future funding,” she said. “Council has also committed some funding which will support the ability to continue to run the programs. It is nice to see such an incredible range of participants from young to old and of all abilities. “The connection within this group is evident and I welcome everyone to be part of, come on down and try a

Tai Chi class.” During COVID-19 restrictions the classes went online with many participants who had never done Tai Chi, joining in for the first time through an online streaming service, which continued with some participants joining in the park-based class once classes resumed. The free fitness classes run on Tuesdays at Rex Smeal Park at 9am until December 15. An announcement will likely happen late December to advise of the outcome with future programs for 2021.

Learn to become a wildlife rescuer she said.

NICOLE GIBSON

“We even have kids that come on board and help out so long as they’ve got a guardian if they’re under 16.

THE Agile Wallaby Project have put out an urgent call for locals interested in becoming wildlife rescuers to attend their specialised training course next week, after a recent surge in wallaby deaths.

“And then we have people as old 70 volunteering so it really doesn’t matter how old you are.” Cairns Northern Beaches local Joel Groberg became a rescuer with the organisation two years ago after completing the course.

Twenty dollars and a big heart is all it takes to become a wildlife rescuer with the organisation holding their Macropod Rescue course next Friday night, 11 December, at Trinity Beach Community Centre. The course also comes ahead of the holiday season which is always a critical time for local wildlife due to the significant number of travelling tourists on the roads. Agile Wallaby Project founder Shai Ager said they were particularly keen for residents of the Cairns Northern Beaches to attend the course given the population in the region. “We’d love more people on board especially from the northern beaches because

| 19

He said the reason he started rescuing was because he wanted to preserve the beauty the wallabies brought to the area for others. our response rate is usually five to 10 minutes getting to a call out so to have people closer is always a great thing,” Ms Ager said. “We are looking for more rescuers in the area because we have a serious issue here where there are so many wallabies getting hit every day. “Since the rain we have had between four and six die

every single day.” Ms Ager said no experience was necessary to attend the course which teaches students how to rescue a joey by safely removing it from its mother’s pouch, as well as rescuing young-atfoot or adult wallabies. “We don’t require any previous experience so it doesn’t matter who you are,”

“One of my favourite things about the northern beaches is going out and having this pastoral scene with a hundred or more wallabies calmly grazing and I wanted to make sure that is around for other people to enjoy.” For more information or to register for the course visit: https://www.theagileproject. com.au/courseregistration

Be prepared for the heat SEVERE to extreme heatwave conditions are expected to affect parts of Cape York Peninsula, the Northern Peninsula Area and the Torres Strait over the coming days. Community members are strongly urged to look after their own health and safety and to check in on those family, friends and neighbours who may be more prone to heat-related illness to make sure they are okay. These include the elderly, infants, overweight and obese people, pregnant and breastfeeding women and people with some pre-existing health conditions. If you’re working outside, be sure to take precautions to ensure you keep cool. For instance, work for 15–20

minutes, then rehydrate and cool off for 5–10 minutes before resuming. But if at all possible, avoid working outside while the current heatwave conditions persist. Drink plenty of fluids and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink – drink regularly throughout the day – unless you have a specific condition and are under doctor’s orders to restrict fluid intake. Urine colour is a good guide to hydration – it should be clear to light straw-colour, not dark or gold. And remember, never, ever, leave children, or animals, or anyone, unattended in cars in the heat. Temperatures can rise very rapidly and can be fatal in a surprisingly short period of time.

LOCAL LOVE A REAL TREE NICOLE GIBSON THE heady scent of Monterey pine has sparked a festive phenomenon filling more Cairns homes than ever as locals flock to capture the spirit of the season with a real Christmas tree. The Atherton Christmas Tree farm, which begin sales of the festive icons at selected locations in Cairns this weekend, said locals wanting a tree had better act fast. “We’ve sold about four times as many as we normally would. It’s growing phenomenally this year,” said Atherton Christmas Tree farmer Juana Adoberg. “Everybody seems to want

the real deal.” Ms Adoberg said the scent and beauty of the pines was the predominant factor driving people’s attraction to the luscious green trees. “A lot of people tell us that they smell amazing,” she said. “We prune our trees regularly because we get a lot of rainfall here and it’s the pruning that keeps them really fresh and really lush. “It just makes Christmas a bit more special I guess because it’s so different.” The business said the trees were also highly sought after by people wanting to experience a ‘traditional’ Christ-

mas without travelling overseas. “We do get quite a lot of people that come to our farm that are from a North European or North American background, with that white Christmas feeling, who say how Christmassy it feels.” Cairns locals can get their hands on one of the trees at Jonsson’s Farm Market or the Cairns Showground this weekend and next weekend but are advised to get there early. “They do sell out pretty quickly so we recommend getting there at 8am to get your pick,” Ms Adoberg said.

Karl’s unique Yungaburra heritage and rainforest tours

Tour guide Karl Buderus has a vast knowledge of Yungaburra attractions like the Curtain Fig Tree. TANYA MURPHY Karl Buderus is a Yungaburra local with a passion for the outdoors and native wildlife, local history, and Indigenous heritage, which he loves to share with others. He runs Yungaburra Heritage and Rainforest Tours, specialising in the heritage and natural values of the place he calls “the centre of the universe and gateway to the Atherton Tablelands.” Karl’s guests are able to design their own tours, choosing their adventure from a smorgasbord of activities - from

World Heritage-listed crater lakes and waterfalls to cheese, chocolate and bush-tucker tasting. One thing is guaranteed – on a tour with Karl, you will see a lot more than you would see on your own. Karl knows all the best spots to hunt for elusive local wildlife, and he knows fascinating stories about sites that you might otherwise walk past without noticing, making your experience of this region so much more engaging. “A native of far north Queensland, I was born and bred in Cairns. As a Cub and

then a Boy Scout I developed a love for the outdoors and native wildlife,” he said. “After relocating to Brisbane and then Burleigh Heads for work, I couldn’t wait to finally escape back to Far North Queensland, the centre of the universe, where I leased the kiosk and café at Cairns Coconut Resort with my wife El,” he said. Finally Karl’s passion for rainforest country drew him to the Wet Tropics Management Authority to participate in their tour guide training and he is now a certified Wet Tropics Tour Guide.

National awards for young filmmaker TANYA MURPHY A short film by a Mount Sheridan teenager has claimed two awards at Australia’s top competition for high school filmmakers. Thaine Wood’s film Learners won the drama category as well as the directing prize at the 2020 Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA), in a special public online ceremony held on November 28. Mr Wood said while the idea for Learners first came to him while he was visiting McDonald’s with his brother and a friend, it eventually turned into something else.

Young filmmaker Thaine Wood PHOTO: Tanya Murphy

“I decided I wanted to tell a story about men’s mental health, about friendship and mateship and convey a bit about what I’ve experienced and what I know other people have experienced and hopefully turn into something that’s relatable but also entertaining,” he said. Mr Wood, who just graduated from Trinity Anglican School, said that he had

been making films as a hobby for “as long as he could remember.” “From about the age of four or five, I grabbed whatever I could get my hands on like my Dad’s old camcorder or even disposable cameras, and made films for fun, with my mates and our toys in my backyard,” he said. Last year, Mr Wood was awarded Young Filmmaker of the Year at Port Shorts Festival for his film Me. He also received the JCU Emerging Filmmaker Award at the Understory Film Festival in Cairns and received highly commended at Canberra Short Film Festival for his film Found. Mr Wood has applied to study medicine in Townsville next year but said he would always continue to make films for a hobby, and had hopes of one day combining the two careers. “There’s an aspect of health that comes down to communication. Through film we can do a lot making sure people are educated

on health, especially mental health. “Documentaries are helpful in showing real issues, but fiction can also help discuss real issues, as is the case in Learners.” Mr Wood said personal life experiences had influenced his film making. “I think any teenager, or any person would be lying if they said they didn’t experience mental health issues at some point,” he said. “Growing up it’s natural to go through cycles of depression and anxiety, especially in today’s society, it’s more and more abundant. “My favourite films to draw inspiration from include ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ and ‘Booksmart’ but I’m also a sucker for blockbusters and superhero movies.” To watch Mr Wood’s films, search for his name on YouTube. He is currently working on a director’s cut version of Learners, which he will upload later this month.

Christmas Cheer at Child’s World TANYA MURPHY

Ellie the Elf and Georgie the Gingerbread Man have been spreading Christmas Cheer and teaching lots of fun dance moves all over Cairns this week! The interactive dance show was produced by KL Performance Industry and Child’s World Early Learning Centres and performed by professional dance teachers as a free end-ofyear treat for the children

at Child’s World’s 10 centres around the city. “This has been a difficult year and people missed out on being able to go to live performances and shows for a long time, so it’s really positive way to end such a hard and trying year for the children and their families,” said Child’s World spokesperson Alison McCallum.

KL Performance Industry dancers Kate George and Leah Carter also hold weekly dance classes at the centres

and said it was a pleasure to spread Christmas cheer to the pre-schoolers. Child’s World is offering a Vacation Care Program for School Aged Children during the Christmas School Holidays, starting from $13 a day. This includes a free home bus service, all excursion fees and nutritional meals provide and prepared by qualified chefs. Positions are limited so to enrol now visit www.childsworld.com.au

MOTORING 24 | Give your teen confidence behind the wheel Cairns Local News

TANYA MURPHY When your child reaches the age of 17 and is able to obtain a Learner’s Permit and start learning to drive, parents face a mixture of emotions. Firstly, you are overjoyed that you will soon be freed from the responsibility of having to drive them around everywhere. But at the same time, you fear for their life… not to mention everyone else on the road. Will they learn to be a responsible driver and focus on the road, or will they be overexcited and take risks? Or for those more anxiety-prone teens, will learning to drive be a frightening and frustrating ordeal? Teaching a beginner to drive also requires a lot of patience, and your relationship with your child may be severely tested if you attempt to teach them yourself. According to Ben Eliot, owner and driving instructor at Focus Driving School, there are four main steps for setting your child up for a safe future of driving.

ONE. Ensure that you get your child to get their Learner’s permit and start learning to drive as soon as they are old enough.

Friday December 4, 2020

“I once taught a student who had been on his Learner’s ever since he was a teenager and still didn’t learn to drive by the age of 40, because once he started working he just never had the time. It caused a lot of inconvenience in his life,” said Mr Eliot. “Make sure your child learns when they’re still young, or they might never get around to it.”

TWO. Book your child for a package deal including up to 10 Driving Lessons. “Depending on whether you’re learning automatic or manual it can take up to 10 lessons for a student to be ready to pass their driver’s test, but it’s not just about passing, it’s about making sure they finish as good, safe drivers,” said Mr Eliot. “Ten lessons with a driving instructor is counted as 30 hours in a Learner’s logbook, so it’s a great way to kick start a student towards achieving their 100 required hours.”

THREE. Choose a driving school with teachers who are patient, understanding, and who love teaching. “To me this isn’t just a job – I really love teaching kids to drive and get a real buzz out of it, especially if they are struggling at the beginning,

Student Ezrah Barrie learning to drive with Focus Driving School owner and driving instructor Ben Eliot. PHOTO Tanya Murphy because it’s so rewarding to help them achieve their goals,” said Mr Eliot. “I have a degree in Human Services and experience in dealing with mental health issues so I’m particularly passionate about helping kids with anxiety and learning difficulties. “I take first-time students to quiet roads in Portsmith or Crystal Cascades for stressfree lessons in a peaceful en-

vironment. “The other instructors at my school are qualified teachers so they understand how learning works and they are fantastic.” Eighteen-year-old student Ezrah Barrie said he tried a couple of different schools before he found one that clicked. “I enjoyed learning with Focus Driving School because Ben didn’t have unrealistic expectations of me when I

was a beginner. He was really patient and helped me build confidence,” he said. “After booking ten lessons I’m now confident enough about passing my test, that I’ve organised to drive for a camping trip with friends two days after my test.”

FOUR. Encourage your child to have a good attitude towards learning. “My driving school is called

Focus because that’s what you need to do to be a safe driver,” said Mr Eliot. “Some people pick up driving easily, others take longer, that’s normal and everyone can learn with encouragement and patience.” To book your driving lesson package, visit www.focusdrivingschoolcairns.com or call 0432 106 081.

bus stop bay • the shoulder of the road, or the left side of the road. Remember to take special care around school buses, especially when their yellow lights are flashing. Watch out for children who may run across the road from in front or behind the bus. Buses, like all other vehicles, are required to indicate for 5 seconds before moving off from a parked position, which includes a bus stop.

ABBRUZZO is a region on the Adriatic Sea in Southern Italy famed for its beautiful seaside fishing villages, mountain ranges, lakes, and its cuisine.

I visited this restaurant with a group of friends, arriving during the ‘Aperitivo’ hour from 5 to 6pm. During this time, if you purchase a drink from the fully stocked bar you receive a complimentary plate of complimentary nibbles from the friendly and professional staff.

Alessandra Giannascoli’s family has been in this region for generations and some of her earliest memories involve helping her parents and grandparents to cook traditional food in their restaurant. It is this background that inspired Ms Giannascoli and partner Wendy Lombardo to open their new restaurant, L’Abruzzese (meaning ‘from Abbruzzo’) in Cairns on Thursday November 26. This Italian dining experience is unique in that all the dishes are offered in small portions, similar to ‘tapas’, enabling diners to sample and share a wide range of hand-made pastas, quality local seafood, meats and

The ‘aperitivo’ is an Italian tradition of having a pre-meal drink, and we took full advantage of the wine and cocktail menu. After this we each ordered three small dishes each and passed them around to share, which was a mouth-watering journey through the exquisite flavours of Abruzzo. My seafood-loving friends relished the Tortelloni Alla Cernia (tortelloni filled with coral trout in ragu sauce), gamberi alla pina (garlic prawns in brandy sauce), and calamari ripieni (calamari

tubes stuffed with bread, garlic, tomato and herbs). My vegetarian friends were delighted with the Pizzette (mini-pizzas), Fettucine Funghi Porcini (homemade fettucine with Italian forest mushrooms, truffle and parmesan cheese) and parmigiana di melanzane (crumbed eggplant oven

baked with mozzarella cheese, Italian red sauce and parmesan cheese). Highlights of the meat selection were the Involtini di Vitello (veal schnitzel filled with three cheeses and slow cooked in red sauce) and Pollo All’abruzzese (pan fried chicken with capsicum, cherry tomato and onion).

We finished off by sharing tarts with ricotta cheese and chocolate, and tiramisu. These were just a few of the options available on the extensive menu and we will definitely be returning to try more next time! While starting a new business during a global pan-

demic might sound like a risky move, Ms Giannascoli said the time off from her day job as a Marine Biologist and Master Reef Guide at Frankland Island tours during COVID-19 had given her and Ms Lombardo the opportunity to focus on starting their culinary dream.

Mt Uncle’s Whiskey Wins top Gong

The Mt Uncle Distillery in Walkamin was started by Mark Watkins in 2001 due to him having an interest in distilling from a young age. “I started distilling in my cubby house when I was sixteen,” Mark said. After completing two chemistry degrees and working on a winery in New South Wales, Mark returned to his family’s banana plantation west of Cairns and using leftover bananas he distilled his first liquor. Then in 2001, he began selling spirits to the public. In 2017 the Mt Uncle Distillery won Australia Distillery of the Year at the fourth annual Melbourne International Spirits Competition (MISC). In 2019 Mt Uncle Distillery’s Iridium Gold was labelled the Best Rum in the World after beating out a host of international drops at the World

Rum Awards in London. Mt Uncle then took out top honours for their single malt Watkins Whiskey in the ‘12 Years and under’ category at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards in London. Now the winning streak has continued with Mt Uncle being awarded the ‘Australian Whiskey Distillery of the Year’ and a Gold medal for their Single Malt Whiskey at the recent MISC.

“Last we only made 30 barrels of the whiskey and this year we’re aiming for only 45 barrels.” The latest awards follow on from the 5 silvers and 2 bronze medals that Mt Uncle won at last month’s Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair as well as another seven awards at the 2020 Australian Distilling Awards

including a Gold medal for the their Bushfire Smoked Gin. Mark said that his unique gin is based on an original London dry gin recipe but the original ingredients had been substituted with Australian native botanicals. “We have smoked our botanicals with bushfire timber, to uncover a

rich, smokey, woody flavour.” he said. Despite the awards Mark is not about to rest on his laurels, with Mt Uncle getting ready to launch a Christmas flavoured gin and also Australia’s first agave spirit which is due out next year.

Mark said it was another feather in his cap “It’s the second time we have won the award, I think the reason we’ve won it again its due to consistency and just good quality whiskey,” he said “And it gets up the nose of the Tasmanian whiskey producers. “The reason why the Whiskey won gold again is because we use the best malted barley and we also use a hybrid cask made from French oak and American oak. ‘The French Oak gives it a nice spice and the American Oak gives it a nice honey taste.” Mark also said he is interested in quality rather than quantity.

THE Mt Uncle Distillery in Walkamin has topped off an impressive year after winning the award for ‘Australian Whiskey Distillery of year’ at the recent Melbourne International Spirits Competition (MISC). This latest award comes after the distillery cleaned up at a number of other international award ceremonies in 2020.

AUSTRALIA 2020 The Betoota Advocate FROM the heart of the Western Queensland Channel Country, Australia’s oldest and favourite newspaper details our country’s very rocky start to a new decade that was supposed to be one of great optimism and innovation. The Betoota Advocate is a small and independent regional newspaper from far west Queensland. They pride themselves on reporting fair and just news with an authenticity that rivals only the salt on the sunburnt earth that surrounds them here in the Queensland Channel Country. Established in the mid-1800s, they are arguably Australia’s oldest newspaper and have always taken pride in their ability to report both regional and metropolitan news. Recently, their popularity has grown immensely as result of a bold online revival. 2020 was meant to be our year of healing. A time to tend to the wounds of a country torn asunder by a decade of divisive political and media debates. A lack of confidence in the international sporting arena. A 24-hour news cycle that has destroyed the pub test. We thought all of the uncertainty was behind us. The federal election delivered us Scotty from Marketing. The Quiet Australian spoke up. Gay marriage? Yep. Climate change? Let’s wait and see what happens. Smudge and Warner had served their time and, together as a nation, it was time to rebuild. But fate had other plans, starting with the worst bushfires in human memory. While large swathes of the country burned, our politicians were either on holidays or giving their mates grants to build indoor pools in blue-ribbon seats. Surely, it couldn’t get worse. ‘ken oath it could. Mother nature arrived as COVID-19, and told us all to go to our rooms.

Television Fast paced crime drama on Acorn TV London Kills is a British police procedural television series, that premiered on Acorn TV February 2019. One of Acorn TV’s first original commissions, London Kills centres around an elite murder investigation squad in London, headed up by DI David Bradford (Hugo Speer), an experienced detective whose judgement is called into question following the unexpected disappearance of his wife. The series follows on from Marquess’ former London-based police procedural series Suspects, and aside from the cast, features a number of striking similarities, including a documentary-style feel and an ad-lib script allowing the cast to partially improvise their lines based upon a given synopsis. The series was originally slated for broadcast on Channel 5, although the broadcaster later pulled out of the deal. The BBC

subsequently purchased the first five-episode series for broadcast as part of their daytime schedule, and began broadcasting episodes daily in June 2019. The second series is now available. Each episode is complete with an on-going plot thread laced through the series to tie it together. The pace is frenetic, with plenty of twists to keep the viewer guessing. Perfect for a weekend binge. Available on Acorn TV. Acorn TV is a streaming subscription service.

TV Hosts for Carols in the Domain TVBLACKBOX.COM.AU THE 38th Carols in the Domain will this year be held at the Aware Super Theatre in a special made-for-television event to be broadcast on Channel 7 and 7plus on Wednesday, 23 December from 7.30pm. The hosts of Australia’s #1 morning television program will be joined by Carols’ best-ever chorus of performers to ‘hang a shining star’and celebrate Australia’s most-loved Christmas tradition, with special appearances from the jolly big man himself, Santa Claus, and family favourites The Wiggles and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Carols viewers will be treated to an exclusive performance from one of the world’s biggest-selling artists of all time, while Home and Away star Penny McNamee will take to the stage for her fourth Carols as a solo performer to sing some of her favourite classics. “It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I know they’re the lyrics to a Christmas carol, but it seems appropriate to quote it. Now, more than ever, we realise the value of being together, of giving thanks and being in the moment. Carols is the perfect chance to celebrate that – whether you’re at the event or tucked up on the couch with your kids or loved ones,” said Kylie Gillies.

The calibre of artists means that tickets have gone quickly so anyone wanting to attend needs to act quickly. “The tickets are selling really quickly so jump on now,” she said. “We’ve already sold out two and a half sections.” Naomi Wenitong, of Shakaya and the Last Con-

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: Feeling overwhelmed? As the week begins, life will throw countless crazy details your way, and you’ll need to stay flexible and focused just to keep up. Don’t fret over lost opportunities on Monday and Tuesday -- this is just a passing phase. On Wednesday, Thursday and the first part of Friday, you’ll feel the urge to experiment and try new things, especially in your relationships. Don’t be afraid to switch things up -- a little scientific method could be just what you need to make a big discovery. On the rest of Friday and into the weekend, you can get more grounded if you look at what’s going on beneath the surface. PISCES: Can you feel all that love? You’re practically floating in it as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday find you inspiring blatant flirtation and more modest forms of affection -- as both lover and lovee. Enjoy the attention and -- above all -- have fun. On Wednesday, Thursday and the first part of Friday, you’ll need to keep to yourself or risk getting sucked into someone’s personal dramas (unless, of course, that sounds kind of fun to you). On the rest of Friday and on into the weekend, get ready to jump in and take action -- even if you don’t have all the facts beforehand.

GEMINI: Money and budgets are tight as the week begins, and you’ll have to work your verbal charms if you want to avoid infighting on Monday and Tuesday. If you can’t get what you want right now, just give it a day or two. On Wednesday and Thursday and on into Friday, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to engage in one of your favorite sports: playful debate. Flex your conversational muscles and enjoy the witty tete-a-tete, but just make sure your fellow debater isn’t taking your well-intentioned quips (and ripostes, brickbats, digs, zingers, etc.) seriously.

LIBRA: Keep your head down as the week begins! You’ve got entirely too much going on right now -- and life is throwing way too many confusing details your way. Your best bet on Monday and Tuesday is just to lay low and focus on small accomplishments. By Wednesday -- and on into Thursday and the early part of Friday -- you’ll be back to your easygoing self. You can accomplish a lot right now, especially if you work together with like-minded to achieve a common goal.

CANCER: You can count on nearly boundless energy as the week begins. Monday and Tuesday both find you at your attractive, adventurous and assertive best -- and people just can’t take their eyes off you. Enjoy all the sincere flattery. On Wednesday, Thursday and early Friday, you’ll feel an irresistible urge to do everything more extravagantly. Indeed, bigger is better right now, and a little showmanship can go a long way. (Just make sure you’re not breaking the bank.)

SCORPIO: At the start of the week, you can get almost anything you want -- provided you’ve got the ambition and assertiveness to go after it. Monday and Tuesday are both great days for following your intuition and taking a chance. On Wednesday, Thursday and the early part of Friday, you might find your assertiveness leading you into danger -- just leave your ego at the door if you want to avoid a power struggle with an authority figure.

ARIES: Don’t hold back at the start of the week. Monday and Tuesday could find you suppressing your more assertive urges, but don’t. Everyone -yourself included -- is best served by clearing the emotional air. On Wednesday, Thursday and the early part of Friday, your bravery and boldness will reach an all-time high. Don’t worry -- that playful daring won’t lead you into trouble. Your only risk is taking on more action (and, if you’re lucky, romance) than you bargained for. This weekend, you’ll be ruled by your routine and your responsibilities. Be a good sport and do the things you have to do. TAURUS: Expect unusual interactions in strange places as the week begins. You’re so super-communicative on Monday and Tuesday that you can find conversation anywhere -- and everyone wants you to keep on talking. (If you’re single, this could -- obviously -- lead to romance.) From Friday through to the weekend, you’ll be swimming in a sea of love. Whether romantic, familial or platonic, the relationships in your life should be strengthened by this infusion of attention and affection.

LEO: As the week begins, you’ll find yourself in possession of unusually good instincts -- along with the initiative and assertiveness to put those gut feelings into action. Monday and Tuesday are both good days for starting something new. On Wednesday, Thursday and the early part of Friday, you can parlay that assertiveness into an amazing streak of achievement. You’re positively radiating confidence and charisma right now. Others will have nothing but admiration for you -- and they’ll either give you a hand or get out of the way. VIRGO: As the week begins, satisfy your urge to socialize by finding a like-minded group to hang out with (especially one with a strong female influence). On both Monday and Tuesday, you’ll feel energized and organized by companionship and teamwork. On Wednesday and Thursday (and the early part of Friday, too), try to stay flexible. Overbearing people could threaten to overwhelm you with conflicting plans and unreasonable demands, and the best thing you can do is take a patient, helpful attitude.

SAGITTARIUS: Energies are mismatched as the week begins, and that means trouble if you’re trying to get things done. The obvious solution -- on Monday and Tuesday, at least -- is to relax and worry more about making connections than making progress. Others will respond well to your open-minded, philosophical mood. It’s a great time for ridiculous risks (as in funny, not dangerous) and attempting the impossible, provided you’ve got the proper sense of humor. CAPRICORN: Novelty is everything as the week begins. On Monday and Tuesday, seek out new people and new ideas. You need to socialize right now to find your footing -- and you can expect extremes in energy, in yourself and others. On Wednesday, Thursday and the first part of Friday, you need to display some of your trademark carefulness and caution. The prudent plan right now (especially at work or in business) is to be firm and fair but to watch for the worst.

Cayla’s Court

CAYLA GEORGE THE WNBL action is heating up as this week’s Cayla’s Court takes a look at what fans can expect now we’ve reached the pointy end of the season. We

are sure to see some exciting matches this weekend as round four wraps up and round five kicks off. Personally, I am super excited to be home with my Boomers girls as we play our first Cairns games of the season. We’ve got four matches at Cairns Pop-Up

Arena over the coming week so I am really looking forward being on home turf. With finals just around the corner we are seeing clear leaders emerge. At this stage, I think fans can expect to see a top three line-up that includes the Boomers, Southside and Capitals with Adelaide and Townsville battling it out for fourth spot. As a league, this week we are using our platform to shine the light on mental health and suicide prevention, renaming the entire round to be the “Lifeline Round” to drive awareness and donations to support their counselling services. Remember if you or

From the Fire Pit NICOLE GIBSON

A win and a loss over past week saw the Townsville Fire sneak into fourth spot as the 2020 WNBL reaches the pointy end of the season. Townsville were pummeled by top of the table leaders, the Southside Flyers, 70-94 on Saturday. However, that match may have ended very differently had star recruit Lauren Nicholson not been sidelined for most of the match after copping a heavy blow to the nose. They pulled it back on Sunday though with a 73-59 win over Sydney Uni in a match that coach Shannon Seebohm said was a must-win in terms of se-

curing a top four position. While other teams are facing a grueling schedule which sees some playing up to five games in eight days, the last two weeks have been kind to the Fire with four days off between rounds. This will no doubt work to the team’s favour with finals just around the corner, aiding player recovery and allowing them to hit the court really prepared for each game. The weekend ahead sees Townsville back on home turf tonight to take on Perth. Townsville smashed Perth at the start of the season. Perth will be hungry for a win after some close calls so this match could see the Fire with a challenge on their hands.

DIAGNOSTICS & REPAIR

The Fire’s other big match of the weekend is against the UC Capitals on Sunday. The last time these two teams matched up the Capitals downed the Fire in a convincing 78-67 win. Townsville will have a point to prove however fans should expect the Capitals to come out hard for a win after losing their number one spot on the ladder, going down to the Boomers on Tuesday. Townsville’s focus throughout the season has been on remaining fit and healthy with strict adherence to recovery protocols. The strategy has paid off with the team securing a 6-3 run up the ladder so far this season.

someone you know is struggling call Lifeline on 13 11 14. The matches to look out for over the coming week include: Sun December 6 2.00pm Cairns: Boomers vs Southside: We had a win against them earlier in the season and no doubt they will come out with a point to prove against us. They are the best team in the league. 5pm Townsville: Townsville vs Capitals: The Capitals beat Townsville when they matched up at the start of the season so I think Townsville will be looking to turn that around and cement a finals spot.

Cairns Local News

Tues December 8 7.30pm Townsville: Perth vs Sydney Uni: These two teams have just missed out on some close games this season so both will be looking to score that win. They are very similar so will match up well against each other. Thurs December 10 6pm Townsville: Perth vs Capitals: Perth almost pipped the Caps in their last game so I think they might be on the lookout for a bit of redemption after only losing by three in the dying minutes.

Jessica Geyl of Fusion Fight and Fitness Cairns is the only female Muay Thai title holder in North Queensland after winning the Muay Thai Queensland Junior Middleweight Title. Photos by FNQ Roar Media TANYA MURPHY Jessica Geyl of Fusion Fight and Fitness Cairns is the only female Muay Thai title holder in North Queensland after winning the Muay Thai Queensland (MTQ) Junior Middleweight Title on Saturday, November 21. More than 800 people crowded Fred Moule pavilion for the explosive night of Muay Thai which saw Cairns locals win two Queensland titles. In the third instalment of the 2020 Elite Fight Series organised by Explosive Fight Promotions, Geyl defeated Kristin Filitonga of The Fight Academy (Destination Fitness Cairns) in all rounds to take home the title.

Geyl’s trainer Paul Hosking said it was a massive achievement. “This was the third fight between Jessy and Kristin and they had won one each, so this fight was for the belt and to round out the trilogy so it was a pretty big fight for both,” he said. “Jessy really improved since their last meeting. We covered all bases in our training so she was ready for everything.” The former national ice-skating champion and mother of two decided to take on Muay Thai as a new challenge just two years ago. “She had a plan to fight for a title and now she has achieved that goal in just two years. She’s done really well and who knows, maybe now

we’ll go for the Australian title,” said Hosking.

left Cook with a split lip and brought the fight to an end.

In the other events, Thomas McRoberts of the Fight Academy (Destination Fitness Cairns) defeated Isaac Papali of Kaos Martial Arts in Brisbane to take home the Queensland Cruiserweight Title.

“You’ve got to love the Muay Thai game, one minute you’re winning every round, the next they’re calling it off because of a cut,” said Cook.

The main event saw Clayton Cook of Fusion Innisfail narrowly miss out on the Super Middleweight Title which went to Corey Crittenden of Crittenden Muay Thai in Caboolture. Cook, who had defeated Crittenden at their previous encounter, brought Crittenden down with carefully placed leg kicks in the first three rounds. But in a twist of events an elbow strike from Crittenden in the fourth round

“Thanks Corey for a tough fight.” Muay Thai, a form of kickboxing which originated in Thailand and incorporates Buddhist principles, has skyrocketed in Far North Queensland since it was first introduced around 25 years ago. Vince Parks from Full Boar gym in Cooktown has been training fighters in the far north for 25 years. The sport’s popularity was easily recognisable from the hundreds of cheering supporters at the November 21 event.
