Urgent need for more people to register as organ and tissue donors LAST week during DonateLife Week, the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR) data revealed the top five local government areas (LGAs) in the Cairns and Hinterland region with the most people signed up as donors.

In order, the top five Cairns and Hinterland region LGA’s with the highest rates of registration and estimated population total of donors aged 15+ are: • Douglas (33% / 11,085 people total) • Cairns (30% / 145,709 people total) • Tablelands (27% / 22,594 people total) • Cassowary Coast (26% / 26,271 people total) • Mareeba (22% / 20,249 people total)

While last year was a record-breaking year for new registrations, with around 350,000 Australians joining the AODR, up 87% on 2020, there is more to be done to lift registration rates.

Around 30% of Queenslanders are registered to be organ and tissue donors, a figure below the national average of 36%.

A recent poll of 60,000 Australians (ABC Talks 2021) showed four out of five say they would be willing to donate their organs when they die.

So, the problem is not that Australians are against organ and tissue donation – it is that they do not know how to, do not think they’re healthy enough or have not got around to it yet.

tion Specialist Nurse of Cairns Hospital Loren Ginders said that with around 1,750 seriously ill people on Australia’s organ transplant waitlist and another 13,000 people on dialysis, the need to consider organ donation had never been greater.

“Any Australian aged 16 and over can sign up online,” Ms Ginders said.

“It doesn’t matter how old you are, your medical history, your lifestyle, what country you’re from or how healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor.

“We know the biggest barrier to families saying ‘yes’ to donation is not knowing their family member wanted to be a donor.

“In hospital, discussing organ

and tissue donation comes at an intensely emotional time for families – usually when faced with the unexpected death of their loved one.

“When donation is possible, it helps when families know what their loved one wanted.

“Across Australia, nine in 10 families say yes to donation when their loved one was a registered donor, and this number is halved when a person is not registered and has not shared their wishes with their family.”

It only takes one minute to register as an organ and tissue donor at donatelife.gov.au or just three taps in your Express Plus Medicare app. You can also use these channels to check and make sure you’re registered.

IN a boost for the region, 30 Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Rangers are now trained and ready to help patrol, protect and preserve local waters.

TSRA Acting Chairperson Horace Baira said the rangers persevered amid the COVID-19 pandemic to complete their Certificate IV in Government Investigations (Regulatory Compliance).

“Training more TSRA Rangers is a massive boost for the region’s biosecurity, community relations and fishing sustainability,” Mr Baira said.

“Our rangers are on the front-

line when it comes to caring for Country and conservation in the Torres Strait.

“This training, combined with local rangers’ knowledge and community links, can help local people better understand the rules to keep Sea Country safe, healthy and plentiful for future generations.

“I would like to congratulate the TSRA Rangers for embracing this opportunity,” he said.

The eight-month course combined classroom teaching, mentoring and on-the-job training, including multi-agency patrols

in the Top Western Communities such as Saibai and Boigu Island.

Saibai Senior Ranger Conwell Tabuai said the training helped build local capacity and skills in surveillance, investigations and compliance.

“The training was a great experience for me as a ranger in my community and will support the important work we do on land and sea,” Mr Tabuai said.

“I would like to thank all the trainers and senior staff management for their support, TSRA Rangers who participated and the Torres Strait Island Regional

Council environmental health workers.”

Including this latest ranger group, more than 40 TSRA Rangers have completed the training since 2017.

The course was funded as part of the Capacity Building of Indigenous Ranger Strategy (CBIRS) provided by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) to help build the technical skills and capabilities of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal rangers across Australia.

National Homelessness Week:

a time to reflect on the housing crisis

Vinnies QLD vice president Dennis Innes said National Homelessness Week allowed organisations such as his to shine a light on the crisis which was getting worse.

“National Homelessness Week focuses on the crisis out there, and it’s not only in Cairns, it’s across QLD and Australia,” Mr Innes said.

“We’re trying to bring about a plan from both State and Federal governments to come together and address the housing crisis.”

Rosies – Friends on the Street Cairns, which provides hot meals, a friendly chat and essentials for people living on the streets, say they have definitely had an increase in people requiring assistance in the past couple of years.

“The housing crisis has increased the number of patrons that visit Rosies, not only for the rough sleepers but also the couch surfers,” Cairns branch coordinator Eunice Winship said.

“Rent, living costs, and fuel costs increases have forced young families to attend Rosie’s outreach.”

With Cairns residents facing a rental vacancy rate of 0.5 per cent and rent costs increasing by 7.3 per cent in the past 12 months, organisations like Vinnies and Rosies have been at the forefront of the crisis.

“We are continuing to see a rise in the need for support in our housing services from residents in Cairns, who are desperately trying to find affordable, available accommodation,” Mr Innes said.

“And I’m afraid the situation has worsened in the last months with the wait list for social housing going up to 27 months in Queensland.

“Tourism is good for Cairns, but Airbnb has played a role in this crisis because

people who own properties can earn a better income out of Airbnbs than having a place on a lease basis.

“However, the biggest impact occurred in the last 18 months when about 60,000 people made Queensland home.

“They’ve come across the borders from New South Wales and Victoria – a lot of them are fairly well cashed up, and they’re buying properties that are already there, not properties that are being built,” he said.

“We know from stats that the supply of materials for building are scarce, and that puts a strain on construction, but also people buying existing stock means we’re not creating additional stock.”

The 2021 Census showed that the median weekly rent has increased over 13 per cent since 2016, more and more people are turning to services like Vinnies to help them find accommodation or to advocate with landlords, and it has become increasingly difficult for them to support their clients.

“Many of our volunteers are stressed because we can’t fulfil our mission,” Mr Innes said.

“More and more people are coming to us for the increasing rent costs, probably one in two people that we see.

“I see people’s income statements, and their rents are much as what their wages are.”

Ms Winship says that is the same case for Rosies but they can only put a band-aid on the issues.

“Rosie’s supplies mats, blankets, backpacks, beds and other warm bedding and clothing to help those in need,” she said.

“However, Rosie’s has sought opportunities to help accommodate our patrons in the past. Today, there is no opportunity at all.”

When it comes to solutions, organisations like Vinnies and Rosies knows that the only way to improve the situation in the long term is through government support.

Although the State Govern-

ment addressed the housing crisis in the 2022-23 budget, Mr Innes and Ms Winship believe more needs to be done, and it should be a cooperative effort.

“We need a plan,” Mr Innes said.

“We need a housing strategy – through the initiative released

by State Government last year with their Queensland Housing Investment Growth Initiative (QHIGI) and Vinnies has been successful in several proposals that we’ve put forward.

“That’s a bonus, but we need everybody to come together on this – the Federal Government also needs to come in with a national housing strategy.

“Government and local governments should be releasing state and local land to residents keen to develop and establish temporary housing at a very low rent to drive down the ever-growing stats,” Ms Winship said.

“But most importantly, reach out to their local communities and seek input on how the community as a whole, working with Local and State Government can help those in our communities who are disadvantaged.”

Mr Innes said now was the time to address the housing and homelessness crisis with our politicians and urged the community to speak up.

“We all have a voice,” he said.

“It’s time to speak up, talk to the politicians, talk to the State Members of Parliament and highlight the desperate situation here in Queensland.

“And for people who are fortunate enough to have a property that’s available for rent, you should look at it as more than putting a roof over someone’s head, you’re providing a place to call home, and there’s a social responsibility in that.”

HE innovative work of the Cairns-based Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC), along with a team of researchers with the National Environmental Science Program, was shortlisted for the 2022 Eureka Prize in Applied Environmental Research for the Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM). The Australian Museum Eureka Prizes are the country’s most comprehensive national science awards.

RRRC Managing Director, Sheriden Morris, is honoured to be nominated.

“I’m so proud of what we have accomplished,” Ms Morris said. “Our initial Eureka! moment involved contemplating whether principles of IPM, a well-established agricultural practice on land, could be applied to outbreaks of a marine pest, the coral-eating Crown-of-Thorns Starfish

Our work is more than just going for dives on the reef and looking for starfish (COTS), on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR).

“A multidisciplinary team of researchers developed a strategy to investigate, then worked collaboratively with on-water COTS control operators to research, implement and rigorously evaluate IPM for coral reef protection. “This is recognition of the extraordinary research capability here in the North, working with the Reef Managers and the Tourism Industry to protect the Great Barrier Reef.” Since the introduction of IPM, more than 1.1 million COTS have been culled, protecting a reef area of more than 726,000 hectares.

The IPM program aimed for a 50% Indigenous intake, and around 85% of graduates were employed by marine tourism operators, commercial dive operators or in the COTS control program.

Building on this success, the RRRC runs an Indigenous leadership COTS control training program that recognises and supports the aspirations of First Nations Peoples to care for their sea country.

Jordy Lane has Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander heritage and first completed COTS diver training in 2015.

He has since worked his way up through the ranks and is currently the Dive Supervisor on InLoc’s “Capricorn Star” vessel. “I would 100% recommend becoming a COTS diver, as long as you’re willing to give it a crack,” Mr Lane said.

“Our work is more than just going for dives on the reef and looking for starfish; it’s not always peachy conditions on the water or amazing reefs.

“Crew are also responsible for helping run the ship as well as cooking/cleaning/tender operating, operating the main vessel anchor, and on top of this, we also conduct maintenance aboard our ship to keep her in good condition.”

The representation is part of the nationwide #SaveSorryBusiness campaign representing approximately 30,000 First Nations fund members impacted by the collapse of the Aboriginal Community Benefit Fund in March.

Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council Deputy Mayor and policyholder Brian Underwood will be joined by Ms Agnes Neal, a family policyholder, for meetings with key government members and Treasury officials.

Yarrabah is the hardest hit of all communities throughout Australia, with over 750 current policyholders amongst the 4000-strong population.

La Festa, an Italian extravaganza

A

part of the Cairns Italian Festival, La Festa – Food and Wine celebrated on Saturday, July 30 at Fogarty Park was a massive success with the Cairns community, with over 13,500 people attending the event.

La Festa was the Italian extravaganza event that turned Fogarty Park into a culinary paradise of over 20 food and drinks stalls representing the food across the different Italian regions, quality wine, coffee, and entertainment for the whole family.

The event showcased live performances by Siesta Cartel, food, cocktails, activities for

the whole family, live entertainment throughout the day and fireworks to close the evening.

Cairns Italian Festival President Steve Cordenos said they were overwhelmed by the community’s positive response.

“We were hoping for seven to 10,000 people,” Mr Cordenos said.

“But we estimated the attendance was around 13,000 to 13,500 people.

“It exceeded our expectations.”

Mr Cordenos said La Festa was an event full of activities and entertainment for Cairns residents.

“The event started at 11am and went until 9:30pm,” he said.

The first Cairns Italian Festival has been getting a lot of love from the Cairns community, and La Festa was no exception.

“This has been probably one of the biggest cultural events in Cairns,” Mr Cordenos said.

“We’ve had excellent reviews.

“One of our greatest ambas-

sadors is the 4CA announcer John MacKenzie; he’s been one of the best radio announcers in Cairns for 40 years; he’s rated us – the best event he’s been to in Cairns.

“It just exceeded our expectations; the biggest thing people told us on the day of La Festa was – what a beautiful, happy event.”

La Festa was a success, and Mr Cordenos took the opportunity to thank the volunteers and the committee for their hard work.

“We had 20 food stalls representing the different regions in Italy; we had massive queues on the food stalls only because of the volume of people there,” he said.

“Next year, we’re looking to add more food stalls to accommodate the number of people we had.

“Overall, the day went excessively well; for our first-time doing festival, everyone will tell you that it went extremely well.

“I want to pay tribute to our amazing volunteers that always had a smile on their faces; they were always happy to assist everyone.

“My committee was extraordinary; we worked all day throughout the festival and worked like a team to put everything together; it was wonderful.”

Student’s survey on cassowary encounters in Mission Beach HAVE you had experiences with cassowaries on roads in the Mission Beach region? India Marshall would love to hear from you to create a missing link in data about driver safety and the endangered southern cassowary.

The James Cook University student is speaking with people who have had collisions, near misses or other encounters with cassowaries on our roads for a new study designed by the university, CSIRO, Terrain NRM and the Cassowary Recovery Team.

The study wants to understand better how to prevent more incidents.

There have been 22 recorded cassowary strikes over the last two years, many in the Mission Beach area.

“We’re being told there is stigma around incidents like this but talking about it is the best way for us all to learn more about how to improve things,” Ms Marshall said.

groups and road managers have been working on the issue of road strikes in Mission Beach for many years.

“However, understanding the cassowary and vehicle traffic interactions has previously been limited by a lack of information from drivers.

“We’re hoping to bridge this gap by creating an anonymous space where people can share their untold stories.”

Ms Marshall will interview people who drive in the Mission Beach area for the next couple of months.

Terrain NRM’s Tony O’Malley said the goal was to fill gaps in information about cassowary strikes.

“In the past, the response has been to put up more signs, change the speed limit or a section of road design,” Mr O’Malley said.

“This project will give people a chance to confidentially get their story out, to increase our collective knowledge and ability to come up with actions that work

for people and cassowaries.

“We are looking for community-based solutions. And hearing from people involved in incidents will help, as is hearing from other people who’ve been driving the roads over a long period to find out what techniques they believe have helped to avoid a cassowary strike.”

Results from the new study will be compared with more than 20 cassowary vehicle interactions captured on roadside cameras at known ‘hotspots’ in a joint CSIRO, Transport and Main Roads, Terrain NRM and Cassowary Recovery Team project.

The roadside cameras do not identify drivers but will give insight into actual driver behaviour compared to behaviours recalled by interviewees.

three-year study of plastic waste in the central Great Barrier Reef area has found a chronic risk to marine organisms from plastic exposure.

James Cook University’s Professor Mark Hamann was part of the study in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

He said plastic pollution is found throughout the global marine environment, including seawater, marine sediment, ice cores, and a multitude of organisms at every depth.

“We estimate that by 2030 there will be a yearly input of between 20 and 53 million metric tonnes of plastic into aquatic eco-systems, with the associated risks likely to increase by roughly 50% in some marine environments,” Professor Hamann said.

He said microplastics less than 5mm in size are a particular concern due to their continued intake and retention in marine organisms.

The team, based at AIMS, conducted 66 surface seawater tows using a plankton net near the SS Yongala shipwreck, southeast of Townsville (Gurumbilbarra), between September 2016 and September 2019.

“A total of 533 synthetic and semi-synthetic plastic items were detected across all tows, with plastic items in every tow sampled except for one,” Professor Hamann said.

He said 92% of fragments and fibres were microplastics.

“Similar to our results, most microplastics previously detected in both GBR waters and coral reef fishes have been identified as microfibres of textile origin,

likely derived from clothing and furnishings,” said Professor Hamann.

He said plastic concentrations were found to be significantly influenced by extreme weather events and associated increases in wind speed and river discharges, resulting in an outflow of plastic debris from rivers.

“Despite peaking immediately following extreme weather events, the overall trend of plastic contamination did not change over the three years of study, suggesting continued and chronic risks of plastic exposure to marine organisms.

“This highlights the need for long-term and ongoing monitoring of the marine environment for plastic contamination,” Professor Hamann said.

Freshwater fig tree to be removed for public safety Council will remove a much-loved fig tree in Freshwater next month in the interest of public safety.

Assessments of the weeping fig tree at Richmond Park, estimated to be 60-65 years old, have been carried out by three arborists: Council’s senior arborist, an independent arborist and an arborist engaged by a concerned community member.

The investigations found several widespread fungal infections throughout the tree.

Two of the fungi are aggressive and incurable: Ganoderma sp. and Pyrrhoderma noxium, and will lead to the tree’s eventual death.

Due to the tree’s poor health, level of decay and structural constraints identified in the various reports, Council has determined that removing the tree is the most appropriate course of action.

“It is always disheartening to remove any tree, particularly one that has such significance to the community,” Division 6 Councillor Kristy Vallely said.

“In May, a large branch fell from the fig tree onto a parked car, and the extent of the tree’s decay became apparent.

“As a result, Council erected a fence around the tree to create an exclusion zone. Council’s arborist undertook a preliminary assessment, and emergency deadwood and crown pruning took place to make the site safe.”

The preliminary assessment identified concerns about the general condition of the tree, and further resistograph, or drill resistance testing, was arranged to give more information.

The Stratford and Freshwater Community Association (SAFCA) contacted the Council with a request for their own independent arborist to assess the tree.

“We were happy to accommodate this request and took into account the findings of SAFCA report when deciding on what action to take,” Cr Vallely said.

“Council also commissioned an independent

arborist to conduct another comprehensive assessment of the tree.

“The Council report and that of the independent arborist share the opinion that the tree is past the point of effective treatment.

“Given the tree is irrefutably in decline and deteriorating, it will likely continue to shed limbs until it finally dies, which is an unacceptable risk to the public.”

The exclusion zone at the site will remain in place in the interest of public safety until a public notification period is conducted and the tree is removed in August.

“As I said, it is always disheartening to remove a tree like this, but I can assure the community that following its removal, a replacement tree will be planted in the park,” Cr Vallely said.

The tree is scheduled for removal the week beginning August 15, weather permitting.

THE EMERGENCY SERVICES CHARITY BALL A SUCCESS THE region’s most prominent social event, the FNQ Emergency Services Charity Ball 2022, was a great success on Saturday, August 30.

A night of fine dining, cocktails, live music and dance were on the agenda for Saturday, all in the name of a good cause.

The event sold out in under three weeks with the largest number of tickets ever sold, almost 900 tickets, FNQESA President John-Byron Bacalakis commented.

“We really appreciate the community support that the event has received. It’s amazing how quickly it sold out. It’s a testament to the committee behind the scenes organising the event,” Mr Bacalakis said.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support this year with 890 guests attending, the biggest yet,” he said.

The ball was a chance for everyone in Far North Queensland to celebrate the hard work of the frontline workers and help a local charity, Rosies – Friends on the Street.

“The night allowed the whole community a chance to mix with the local emergency services and to thank the local front line workers for all they do in the community, and it allowed the emergency services workers to let their hair down for the night,” Mr Bacalakis said.

Working closely with Rosies - Friends on the Street to coordinate the event and organise the live auctions, Mr Bacalakis said the committee is honoured to help raise funds assisting the charity to continue making a difference in the lives of others every night right here in Cairns.

“Rosies does so much for the community; it helps people on

the street or those struggling to make ends meet by creating an opportunity for companionship, someone to talk to and receive a meal,” Mr Bacalakis said.

MORE than 18,400 solar panels have been installed at state schools across the Far North to help slash electricity costs and cut carbon emissions.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the Advancing Clean Energy Schools (ACES) program was expanded in February 2022 and exceeded targets in delivering more panels at schools than initially planned.

“The completion of the $168 million ACES program is a testament to the Palaszczuk Government’s strong focus on creating good jobs and better services to enhance our great Queensland lifestyle,” Ms Grace said.

“I am particularly proud that we exceeded our original target of 180,000 panels at 872 schools and have instead delivered 200,000 panels at 912 schools.

“This equates to a $26 million saving on energy bills every single year and is enough renewable energy to power 25,000 homes – that’s more than all the households in the Gladstone region.”

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the program was good news for schools, our en-

vironment, and great news for the Palaszczuk Government’s renewable energy target.

“ACES is making a significant contribution to the Palaszczuk Government’s 50% renewable energy target by 2030, with the 200,000 solar panels on state school rooftops expected to generate an average of 280MW of electricity per day,” Mr Healy said.

Speaker of Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the 18,400 panels in the Far North alone could generate around 26,700 kW of electricity daily.

“This is another example of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art facilities to our world-class schools and ensuring a bright future for our children by taking action on climate change,” Mr Pitt said.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the completion of the ACES program follows the Palaszczuk Government’s delivery of air conditioning for every classroom, staff room and library in Queensland state schools.

Redlynch State College had 1156 solar panels installed, which will offset the costs of air conditioning and other energy costs in an $830,000 investment.

Principal Maurice Andrejic said the school is delighted with their new solar panels, which can generate an average of 1,600 kW of electricity every day.

“The ACES program will undoubtedly deliver great savings to our College so we can spend more on delivering outcomes for students,” Mr Andrejic said.

“This is a great Queensland Government investment. Redlynch State College prides itself on being a sustainable school.

“We can now show the community that clean and affordable energy benefits everyone, and anyone can get involved in the use of solar panels.”

HE Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Queensland Branch President Chris Owen, announced on Tuesday that over 1.65 million COVID-19 vaccinations had been administered to Queensland patients by community pharmacies since June 7, 2021.

Mr Owen said that community demand for accessing vaccinations through community pharmacies had remained steady throughout the pandemic.

“I’m hearing from community pharmacists across the state that demand for vaccinations is still very high,” he said.

“The good news is that stock levels are level with demand, so it’s pretty easy to access COVID-19 vaccines through community pharmacy.

“I would encourage anyone who hasn’t had their third or fourth boosters to visit https://bit.ly/3zVeZUd or come into their community pharmacy to get vaccinated.”

Mr Owen said vaccinations are still the key to controlling future COVID-19 outbreaks.

“The best way we can protect our loved ones and ourselves from contracting COVID-19 is to be up-to-date with our vaccinations, and that means making sure we’re all getting the boosters,” he said.

Mr Owen said those choosing to be vaccinated at community pharmacies could do so with confidence as all vaccinators continued to undergo specific training related to the vaccine

they are administering.

“COVID-19 vaccinations delivered in pharmacies are administered by highly-trained and qualified vaccinators who have to attain a current first aid and CPR certificate as well as accreditation in anaphylaxis management,” he said.

Applications open UK working holiday for the Household maker on a winning Resilience Program trip to FNQ Cairns

APPLICATIONS have now opened for another phase of the Palaszczuk Government’s Household Resilience Program, an initiative that helps North Queenslanders protect their homes from extreme weather.

Minister for Energy and Public Works Mick de Brenni said the highly successful program provides financial assistance for low-income households in cyclone-prone regions to strengthen their homes.

“We can’t control Mother Nature, but we can control how resilient our homes are, and that is why the Palaszczuk Government is investing $20 million to help make Queensland homes more resilient to storms and cyclones,” Mr de Brenni said.

“In the first two phases, we helped 3,525 low-income households replace roofs and doors, reinforce windows and tie down external structures.

“Those people are now living in homes much more resistant to storm and cyclone damage, while many have also reaped a side benefit of reduced insurance premiums.

“These first two phases were oversubscribed, so I urge eligible homeowners to get in quickly to ensure they don’t miss out.”

The program funds 75% of eligible improvements valued at $15,000 total project value, with the homeowner paying the remaining 25%.

“What this means is we’ll cover up to a maximum of $11,250, with the balance paid by the applicant,” said Mr de Brenni.

To be eligible, homeowners must meet an income test and live in a home built before 1984 within 50kms of the coastline, from Bundaberg north to Cape York and west to the Northern Territory border.

The program also boosted local businesses, with the first two phases injecting almost $61 million into the northern Queensland economy. Local contractors were used by 94% of grant recipients.

“The continuation of the Household Resilience Program is great news for small businesses, contractors and tradies right along the northern Queensland coastline,” Mr de Brenni said.

“We had reports from the first two phases of funding that some businesses had gained the equivalent of a year’s work in some regions.

“Regional roofing companies received a considerable boost,

as roofing works were by far the most popular option for people seeking to protect their homes better.

“This meant new jobs were created for tradies and labourers and opportunities right through the product and support supply chains.

“In the smaller regional centres, the flow-on effect of this money was multiplied and spread right through the communities.”

Mr de Brenni said most insurance companies were happy to reassess premiums once resilience works were completed.

“In Phase 2, we saw an average reduction of 9% in insurance premiums for homeowners who took part in the program,” he said.

“For low-income earners, that’s an important saving and shows the value of this program goes beyond just having a nicer, safer home.”

ORKING on a Great Barrier Reef Island and meeting Tropical North Queensland’s wildlife is on the wish list for a UK woman who has won a first-class flight to Australia as part of a major campaign to attract working holiday makers to the destination.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland partnered with one of the world’s leading youth travel platforms, Global Work & Travel, to launch the ‘First Class to Paradise’ campaign.

It aimed to encourage working holiday makers from the UK, Ireland and Europe to travel to Australia and be matched with a partner employer in the Cairns and surrounding region.

“This still hasn’t really sunk in yet. It probably won’t hit me until I’m actually on the flight out to Australia,” Georgia said.

“When I was told I’d won on the Zoom call, I was totally surprised. My hair was all over the place, and I wasn’t prepared for anything, but I don’t really care.

“I was so excited, and afterwards, I was crying for 10 minutes.”

VER the weekend, the Far North Queensland Relay For Life brought locals from all corners together to help make a difference for those affected by cancer.

The event raised over $123,976, with funds still being processed over the coming weeks.

Around 59 registered teams and over 621 participants, including 263 local high school students, came together to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer, raising vital funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s work in cancer research, prevention programs, and practical support services.

The 8.5-hour-long event was jampacked with traditional Relay ceremonies, 13 different local performance groups, a hotly contested tug o war, and the famous Relay’s Got Talent – this year won by the Queens of the Reef team.

Participants shared their involvement on social media, connecting with other teams as they took part in challenges and lit up their candles for the beloved candlelight ceremony.

With a plan for action, we can end homelessness Homelessness Week is taking place from 1st -7th August this year, and across the country, in towns and cities, individuals and families will sleep in garages, cars, or on a mattress on the floor with their friends or family. Some for the first time due to recent weather events.

Everyone has the right to a safe place to call home. But skyrocketing rents put safe and stable accommodation out of reach for more and more people. Regional rents are now 18 per cent higher than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic, while rents in capital cities have increased 14.7 per cent over the past 12 months.

This is changing the face of homelessness. Many people who are in work, and have a history of secure housing, now find themselves struggling to pay rent or find affordable rentals.

At Mission Australia we welcome the Federal Government’s focus on housing and homelessness. Their commitment to invest in 30,000 new social and affordable homes will bring relief to many in need – but with 150,000 households on the social housing waiting list, much more is needed.

The Government has also committed to developing a national plan to end homelessness. This plan must touch on all policy areas that impact housing and homelessness and be resourced to deliver meaningful action. People with lived experience of homelessness need to be involved. This is a real opportunity to shape a future where all of us have a safe home and can thrive. We can’t waste it.

Sustainability grants open Two Council sustainability grants are now open.

Community Sustainability Grants of up to $5000 are open to community groups and not-for-profit organisations to raise awareness and take action for a more sustainable Cairns.

Council’s Nature-based Learning Grant (up to $2000) is open to schools for excursions that connect children with nature to raise awareness and appreciation of sustainable living and the natural world.

ISITORS to the Douglas Shire that venture North beyond Port Douglas are always glad they made the extra effort, not only to experience the beauty and tranquillity of the World’s Oldest Rain Forest, but to stop off and enjoy natural attractions like the Mossman Rain Trees or Gorge. They may even wish to stop for a coffee or taste the locally produced Tropical wines of Shannonvale.

Locals will know, however, that apart from its beauty spots, Mossman is very much the engine room of the Shire, being home to the Council Offices, Sugar Mill and much more.

The ‘much more’ we talk about, includes numerous sports facilities, many of which we have discussed in Gazza’s Goss before.

One that came to my attention is the Mossman & District Gymnastics Club, which has been part of the Douglas Shire for over 50 years.

The club is a community based, not for profit sporting organisation,

delivering gymnastics in a fun, friendly and inclusive environment.

You may well be thinking that this sport is only for the young and flexible, but that is certainly not the case.

Mossman & District Gymnastics Club, in fact, offers classes and fitness programs for all ages and abilities, from babies through to senior citizens, raw beginners to high level competitive gymnasts.

These programs include recreational and competitive gymnastics classes for boys and girls, plus under 5’s specialised movement and foundation gymnastics programs known as Kinder gym, Mini Gym and Baby Gym. Then there’s FreeG Ninja Warrior, Track and Tumble and children and adult aerial skills.

The club is always keen to involve the community and provides Sporting Schools Programs which offer gymnastics to local schools, kindy and day-care centres in the Douglas Shire and nearby Shires.

Hot off the Press is that three of the club’s competitive gymnasts, Lena Schmidt (Level 5), Indie Baird (Level 4) and Jasmin Sayed (Level 6), have qualified for the Gymnastics Queensland WAG Junior State Championships. These gymnasts, their families, coaches and judges will head down to Brisbane in September, along with any other gymnasts who may qualify between now and August.

DOUGLAS SHIRE NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC’s theme this year was a rallying call to all First Nations people to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr, said in his speech at the Opening and Flag Raising ceremony, this year’s celebrations were about moving beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, and promises.

“It’s about walking the walk and not talking the talk”.

“Whether it is seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism”, the Mayor said “we must do it together.”

“There must be a genuine commitment by us all to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.”

The week’s celebrations included a baby show hosted by Goobidi Bamanga Organisation, Netball Fast Five competition, Mossman Gorge Gateway Markets, an Elders lunch and wrapped up with a huge street parade along Front Street to George Davis Park where school groups and families joined in on celebrations, activities and learnt about NAIDOC week and Indigenous culture.

MOSSMAN SHOW DEEMED HUGE SUCCESS The rain held off as Mossman celebrated its 70th Annual Show last month. The event ran over two sunny days and drew unexpected crowds from near and far.

Mossman Show Society President Matthew Hatfield was surprised at the number of visitors to the region who came through the gate.

“We usually get a great turn out from residents, but this year there were noticeably more travellers, particularly from interstate.

“We are yet to count the tickets sold, but we estimate it was well over the 5,000 mark over the two days.”

While pavilion entries were slightly down this year, the quality was outstanding and displays covered agriculture, horticulture, culinary, needlework, arts and crafts and photography.

“Every year we encourage people to get involved in the exhibits from school students, community groups and businesses,” Matthew said.

were not just a hit with families, but the pig racing also helped to raise funds for the local gymnastics club.

Matthew said the Show Society wanted to encourage all community groups to be a part of the annual show, not just because it’s fun, but to capitalise on the fund-raising opportunities the event presented.

Matthew was also pleased there was a mixture of home-grown talent on display.

“Mossman High School’s Concert Band took centre stage on Monday evening, playing hits from Broadway to the latest Top 40 songs and our local pooches excelled in the Dog Jumping competition.”

Douglas Shire Council’s display included a recycling game, a water quiz and a kid’s corner which proved to be a respite area for parents with young children.

Plastic Free Cairns joined in, sharing tips and tricks to encourage residents to recycle, reuse and reduce.

Matthew said the Show Society was, as always, grateful to all the volunteers and supporters to give up their time to make the event such a success.

“We look forward to an even bigger show in 2023.”

KERMIT IS WRONG. IT IS EASY BEING GREEN— REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Each week, many of us put out our wheelie bin without much thought as to where the content ends up.

Based on the total volume of household rubbish collected in the Shire, each home generates an average 1.046 tonnes of waste annually.

Douglas Shire Council wants all of us to reduce the amount of stuff we throw out and the Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan recently adopted sets out how this can be achieved.

Mayor Michael Kerr said in the first instance, we need to reduce the volume of material people put in their wheelie bin.

Major Grants

“Council provides kerbside wheelie bin service for 7,543 homes so if we have less rubbish in every bin, this will make a huge difference.”

Mayor Kerr said the Plan includes the continuation of free waste education sessions.

“These sessions are free, fun and interactive and explain where our waste goes, and practical tips on how we can reduce the amount of rubbish which ends up in landfill.

“We target primary schools across the shire, but community groups or businesses are welcome to book a session.”

Council’s Major Grants program is to support eligible organisations, groups, and individuals with financial (grants, sponsorship) and non-financial (in-kind) assistance to help develop and deliver community programs, activities and events that provide artistic, cultural, sporting, recreational, environmental outcomes and social and economical benefits to the Shire.

Council will be holding information sessions to assist you in the application process of applying for a major grant.

With a high turnover of hospitality staff, travellers looking for advice on what to do in the region can be met with blank looks from those who have only just stepped off the plane and been co-opted into full time employment before having the chance to explore the region.

Daintreepedia becomes their best friend as it contains everything travellers will ever want to know about the Daintree.

The information is compiled and checked by over 120 businesses, who share their knowledge about local swimming holes, walking trails, driving distances, 4WD adventures, unique Indigenous experiences and a whole lot more.

Daintreepedia has been available online for several years but this year a glossy booklet has been distributed to resorts, holiday homes, backpackers and camping grounds throughout the shire.

Having copies in each room means guests can peruse information at their leisure to plan their Daintree adventure.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the Daintreepedia project was a great example of how Council’s micro grants can be used to get initiatives off the ground.

“Publishers knew Daintreepedia would be embraced by the tourism industry, but without having a track record, it was hard to demonstrate value for sponsors.

“The micro grant from Council enabled the print quantity to be doubled.

“The uptake has been wonderful, and the expectation is that the 2023 edition will be self-funding.”

The Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival will be held over three days next month, 9 – 11 September.

The 136km and 100km Gran Fondo courses, and the 48km Medio Fondo course will take place on Sunday 11 September. All three courses will travel along Great Barrier Reef Drive, from Palm Cove into Port Douglas.

Road closures will be in place, in stages to minimise impact as much as possible.

Road Closure details: Sunday, 11 September 2022 Southbound (Port Douglas to Cairns) from Teamsters Park (Willie Pye Memorial Park), Craiglie to Palm Cove Boulevard, Palm Cove will be closed from 6:00am – 1:30pm.

Northbound (Cairns to Port Douglas) from Palm Cove Boulevard, Palm Cove to Wangetti Beach Road, Wangetti will be closed from 5:30am to 11:30am and Wangetti Beach Road, Wangetti to Teamsters Park (Willie Pye Memorial Park), Craiglie will be closed from 6:00am – 1:30pm Emergency vehicles will still have full access to Great Barrier Reef Drive in both directions between Port Douglas and Cairns during these times.

DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE SERVICE PROVIDER OPPORTUNITY For many years, community service agencies and Queensland Police have been citing an urgent need to provide local crisis accommodation for women and children affected by domestic and family violence in the Douglas Shire.

Douglas Shire Council Mayor Michael Kerr explained there is no suitable temporary accommodation where families can stay and receive support, while they find a new, permanent home.

“We want to provide safe and secure housing for women and their children in the community.

“For some, moving out of the shire means finding a new job, being without the support of family, friends and other networks, and children being enrolled into a new school, away from their peers.

Fortunately, access to crisis accommodation will soon be a reality in the shire.

Council was successful in receiving funding from the Department of Social Services via the Safe Places Emergency Accommodation Grant to build two co-located, self-contained units.

Mayor Kerr said the new buildings were nearly complete, and Council is in the process of finding a suitable provider to manage the facility on an ongoing basis.

The Daintree River Ferry will not operate from 10pm Friday 18 November 2022 until Tuesday 22 November 2022 to allow for important safety maintenance work to be completed.

Contractors will replace the vessel’s northern loading ramp. At this stage, the ferry is expected to resume normal operations at 5am Tuesday 22 November, weather permitting.

There will be no vehicle ferry service during this period.

Ultrafiltration is a pressure-driven purification process separating particulate matter from soluble compounds using an ultrafine membrane.

In English, this means water is pushed through a &series Local Laws of membranes which have miniscule holes which $2.10 stops most molecules, viruses and pathogens from getting through.

This leaves just pure water.

Since Douglas Shire Council installed the system 20 years ago, there have been advancements in filtering technology which means the treatment process can be improved, requiring less chemical and power, and TOTAL reduced water losses.

The Mossman Water Treatment Plant which supplies all of Mossman and Port Douglas comprises five racks,

Local author finalist MIDNIGHT for National Award OIL CAIRNS author Crystal Leonardi of Bowerbird Publishing has been named as a finalist for the AusMumpreneur Awards in the Author and People’s Choice Making Difference categories.

The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by The Women’s Business School celebrate and recognize Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service, and digital innovation.

“My name is Crystal Leonardi, and I am an author, motivational speaker, publisher, wife, and mother to four beautiful children,” Ms Leonardi said.

“I was born and raised in Cairns but now call Julatten’ home’.

“My lifelong dream of becoming an author was fulfilled in September 2021, with the publication of ‘Boy of Steel’.

“I have enjoyed being interviewed for TV, radio, magazine, and newspaper and feel very blessed to be an advocate for hope and a voice for sick children.”

Ms Leonardi has had a couple of busy years in which she has worked on three different publications, nurtured her business, and got nominated for the AusMumpreneur Awards.

“Looking to the future, I hope to continue to grow my audiences through my business Bowerbird Publishing, as a motivational speaker, mentor, publisher, and writer,” she said.

“My second book, ‘My Brother Sebastian’, is currently being worked on by my illustrator and will be ready for publication in August.

“My third book, ‘6 Steps to Self-Publishing with Crystal Leonardi’ is an interactive handbook aimed at writers wanting to commence a selfpublishing project.”

“By sharing my story, I had become an ambassador for overcoming adversity and was newly equipped with the confidence I needed to start Bowerbird Publishing.

“As a self-published author, I learned how to successfully manage and market myself without the assistance of one of

the ‘Big-4’ publishing houses here in Australia.”

There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood Ms Leonardi explained.

“I believe becoming a published author under such tragic circumstances has fostered a genuine motivation to help others. I have turned my tragedy into triumph,” she said.

“I have turned cancer into a best-selling book and turned that book into a publishing company and a new career as a writer, mentor, and motivational speaker.”

The winners of the 2022 AusMumpreneur Awards will be announced in Sydney this September.

QSO brings ‘Superfamous’ to the Cairns Festival

HE Queensland Symphonic Orchestra (QSO) will be headlining the Cairns Festival with its new show Superfamous as part of the orchestra’s 75th birthday celebration on Sunday, August 28, at the Munro Martin Parklands.

QSO Director of Artistic Planning, Timothy Matthies, said it was delightful to return to Cairns as part of the Cairns Festival.

“We haven’t had the large orchestra in Cairns since 2018, so it’s great to be here,” Mr Matthies said.

“It’s also the orchestra’s 75th birthday, and we’re delighted to be celebrating it in Cairns.

“And our Superfamous program responds to that 75th birthday because it features some of our favourite pieces and pieces that audiences love.

“So we’re looking forward to bringing a wide range of repertoire to the audience when we play at the Munro Martin Parklands.”

Superfamous will take audiences on a ride through the best-known musical scores, from Beethoven to Bizet, to Westlake and Williams.

“We’ve got a great selection of music, and that’s why

“But also just to be connecting with the Cairns audience; they’re so engaging, and they love music, and to be a part of the festival’s lineup is very exciting for us.

Mr Matthies invited Cairns’ residents to come and enjoy a magical experience like never before.

“For those who haven’t been to an orchestra before, come along and experience the orchestra in the parkland setting; you can bring food and drinks and enjoy the atmosphere,” he said.

“Guy (conductor) and the orchestra will take you on a journey into these pieces that we love and hope audiences also love.”

“He knows the orchestra inside and out because he’s been with QSO for almost 30 years, and we thought there was no one better to write this piece for the orchestra’s birthday.

“And we love to connect with people of all ages, especially students, and we’ll be working with 13 secondary school students from the Cairns region.

“They will come and play with the orchestra Johann Strauss Sr’s Radetzky March as part of what we call our Prodigy Program.”

For the musicians at QSO, it is very special to be one of the headliners at the Cairns Festival.

“What we’re most excited about is to be at the Munro Martin Parklands again,” Mr Matthies said.

Sweet news for motoring enthusiasts

By Maria Larkins CAIRNS MOLASSES was big news 100 years ago – as a potential source of fuel.

In August 1922 it was announced that “important extensions had been completed at the Cairns Molasses storage depot”. The depot could now hold 2320 tons of this now highly sought after commodity. “The Bundaberg Mail” reported on August 2: “Formerly a thousand tons annually of this valuable by-product of sugar

was thrown into the sea. Now the molasses is purchased by the Commonwealth Government and is being used for manufacturing power alcohol.”

As motor cars became popular there was increasing interest in an alternative fuel to petrol. However, power alcohol alone was not a suitable product for modern motor vehicles. After several years of experimentation on Monday, January 14, 1929, Mackay’s “Daily Mercury” announced: “Power Alcohol on market next month to be known at Shellkol. It is understood that the Shell Co. will

market power alcohol from the Plane Creek factory about February 1, under the name of Shellkol”.

As the name suggested, it was an admixture of Shell (motor spirit or fuel) and power alcohol derived from the distillation of molasses and other sugar cane by-products.

Shell launched an impressive advertising campaign. To motoring enthusiasts the appeal was “eager smooth flowing power – easy starting – rapid acceleration – anti-knocking – chemical cleanliness – the essentials of a high grade product”.

A Gift It was quite an event, when local school mistress, Miss Mabel Vallance, married Evelyn timber worker, Sam J. Pearson, on Tuesday, December 17, 1929. The bride wore a gown of white brocaded silk with panels of white mariette embroidered with silver beads. She wore a veil of handmade Brussels lace (more than 60 years old) adorned with a coronet of orange blossoms and tiny georgette flowers. The bridegroom’s gift to the bride was a De Soto car.

would have been the envy of all her friends as the De Soto was a very

popular vehicle at that time. An article from the “Brisbane Courier” in January that year celebrated the arrival of the De Soto Six Tourer: “The long-awaited De Soto car has at last been ushered on to the Queensland market, where it has received an enthusiastic reception.”

WEST CAIRNS TPI MEMORIAL BOWLS CLUB An overcast afternoon greeted the twelve bowlers including two visitors from Mandurah club in Western Australia playing at the West Cairns Bowls Club last Monday. Winners: Sue Jordan, visitor Dawn Evans and the team leader Ken Broughton.

Although the numbers were reduced, everyone seemed to enjoy their bowls played in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. We appear to be joined by more visitors lately which enhances the way our players also enjoy the sport. We would like to see the number of local bowlers which seem to be smaller than last year coming back to boost our numbers. A sheet is also available at the clubhouse. After a break for a substantial afternoon tea, play continues until 4:30pm when a random playing card is drawn to determine the winner of a small prize.

The opportunity also is available to win a prize by holding the winning card attached to a wooden bat in a draw that is decided before play commences. The green is carpet covered and protected from the elements by a fixed roof so the number of occasions play is not available is very small.

Netball Regional Club Carnival on this weekend

THE Fowlers Group Marlin Coast Club Netball will be held this Sunday, August 7 at the Cairns Netball Courts, Martyn St. Cairns Fifty three (53) teams from the six associations across the region, including Douglas, Mareeba, Tablelands, Tully, Innisfail and Cairns will attend the carnival. The teams have nominated in their respective age groups ranging from 16/ Under to 10/Under.

The Games will get underway at 9am on Sunday and will conclude on Sunday at 3.30pm with the presentation of trophies.

Marlin Coast will also host Fowlers Group Netta Carnival on Friday, August 5, with 50 school children from six local schools aged seven to nine, will attend their first ever carnival.

The young ones will play under modified rules, introduction to netball without the pressure. The Netta Carnival Games start at 9am and finish at noon, at Cairns Netball Association on Martyn Street Sports Park.

First-class fishing boats on regional tour coming to Cairns EDENCRAFT International, a market leader in trailerable offshore fishing boats, is taking its current models on the road as part of an official East Coast Tour.

Kicking off the one-month roadshow in Newcastle, NSW, on September 27, the convoy will head north, visiting boat ramps in South West Rocks, Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach and finally, Cairns on October 26.

The Edencraft team is looking forward to taking the show to fishing and boating fans across two states. All events are completely free and family-friendly.

Edencraft International director Grant Maher said this event was targeted at all fishing and boating enthusiasts.

“This event is an absolute must for anyone passionate about fishing and boating in New South Wales and Queensland,” Mr Maher said.

“Following the success of our first tour in 2021 that journeyed from Pambula, we are keen to continue to reach more of our customers up north.

“We’re looking forward to once again visiting the grassroots communities we build our boats for,” he said.

“This show offers customers the chance to get up close and personal with the latest boats and even allow potential buyers to book a test ride.”

The models on display will include Edencraft’s 565, the 6.0 Offshore and the legendary 233 Formula.

ATHLETES competing at the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns will have more chances to race at the prestigious VinFast IRONMAN World Championship following the announcement of additional qualifying slots for the 2023 event.

The 2023 IRONMAN Cairns event on Sunday, June 18, will feature more IRONMAN World Championship qualification slots than ever before, with 100 available, plus an extra 65 on offer just for women.

The news follows the announcement that the 2023 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona,

Hawaii, will be a two-day event, with racing taking place on October 12 and 14, 2023.

The two-day format will debut this October and be continued in 2023, with a dedicated day of racing for the women’s field on Thursday and the men’s field on Saturday, allowing for full focus and coverage on each race and its competitors like never before.

Dedicated female and male race days will also bring about increased qualifying opportunities, including expanded slot allocations at regional championships and increased opportunities for women at 17 IRONMAN triathlons from around the world,

designated as Women For Tri events.

The Women For Tri designated events will further grow participation and celebrate women in the sport while creating more than 1,200 additional opportunities to qualify for the biggest stage in the sport – The IRONMAN World Championship.

Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Oceania for The IRONMAN Group, welcomed the news of the additional IRONMAN World Championship qualification slots at IRONMAN Cairns.

While the number of athletes racing in IRONMAN events each year has increased considerably over the last 20 years, the number of athletes qualifying

for the IRONMAN World Championship has remained relatively flat.

With a two-day format, top age groupers deserving a chance to compete on the world’s stage will now have additional opportunities to qualify.

As one of the most sought-after experiences in mass participation sport, those who have made it to the IRONMAN World Championship continue to be among the world’s elite, equating to 0.00006% of the world’s population.
