THANK YOU FOR RECYCLING YOUR TYRES Last year we diverted 2,134 tyres from landfill! It costs from $8.40 (passenger vehicle) to dispose of a tyre at waste transfer stations. This charge covers the cost for Council to responsibly dispose of tyres. All of our tyres are sent to TyreCycle where they are recycled or repurposed into other products like brake pads, non-slip surfaces and even fuel. If you are tempted to avoid the costs of responsibly disposing of your tyres, remember that illegally dumped tyres have environmental impacts and cost Council for removal. You can also be fined for illegal dumping. So do the right thing. Recycle your tyres and don’t rubbish our backyard. If you witness someone dumping in our backyard report the incident on 1300 763 903, OR report online at www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/illegal-dumping
FEAST OF THE SENSES WASTE EDUCATION On Sunday 27 March, Feast of the Senses Market Day Extravaganza, Council’s Education Officer and spent the day discussing with the local community ways we can reduce waste entering landfill. Fast facts from the National and State Food Strategy identifying issues were relayed to 71 community members who came through the stall and provided examples of practical ways each household can AVOID, REUSE and RECYCLE food waste.
Mission Beach Town Centre
At this week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, held on 31 March 2022, Council endorsed the Communication and Engagement Plan for the Mission Beach Town Centre Revitalisation Project. The Mission Beach Town Centre, located along Porter Promenade, is the central precinct of the Mission Beach area and encompasses restaurants, shops, professional offices, dwelling houses, dwelling units, roadside stalls, caravan parks, parks, and foreshore areas. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said the redevelopment of the Mission Beach village green tourism area and adjacent Porter Promenade, will create a vibrant space to live, work, shop, dine, invest and experience. “This project is linked strongly our
Corporate Plan and is about Council working in partnership with the Community to enhance and promote pride in and liveability of in our region,” said Mayor Nolan. The Communication and Engagement Plan for the project has been developed to guide activities during the detailed design and construction phase. It provides a summary of a more in-depth engagement strategy, identifying key stakeholders, project negotiables and non-negotiables, level of engagement proposed and outlines key messages. To reach the identified stakeholders at various levels, several different methods of engagement have been identified. Methods include, letter drops, stakeholder meetings, one-on-one consultation sessions, a dedicated project webpage, project advertising and social media.
These methods, along with others, focus on building strong community relationships and may be repeated throughout the duration of the project. Through implementing the Communication and Engagement Plan the goal is to: • Create strong community involvement. • Ensure stakeholders feel heard and involved in the design of the community space (negotiables). • During construction, directly impacted stakeholders, such as business owners, are informed and up to date with planned works. • The community agrees the project delivers a space that is authentic to Mission Beach. • The community agrees that the project meets business and community needs.
For more information on the project or the report presented to Council visit the dedicated project page at: www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/mission-beach-town-centre-revitalisation-project or call Council on 1300 763 903 or via email on enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.
• AVOID: Stickers were provided to the community which label Eat Me First on storage containers in the fridge to help you quickly identify items that need to be consumed ASAP. • REUSE: There are many ways people can reuse food scraps, one way – regrow food from seeds, plants bases and stems. • RECYCLE: Through a small survey it was identified that composting is the most popular option for people to recycle food scraps. Composting is an effective practise to divert waste entering landfill and return nutrients to our soils. Council encourages the community to take advantage of Council’s Composting Rebate program where residents can claim a $20 rebate for the purchase of a compost bin or worm farm. To learn more please visit: www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/community-composting-program Insightful conversations were had with the community about ways they reduce waste entering landfill and wanting to learn more about how they can recycle. One couple shared their tips for a DIY in ground worm farm where they used old PVC pipes, drilled holes into them and buried them into their raised gardens. Simple, cheap and a great way to reduce food waste entering landfill. Thank you to everyone who stopped in to chat about how we can leave Nothing to Waste in Our Backyard!

2022 STATE VALUATION On 31 March 2022, The Queensland Valuer-General issued land valuations for 30 local government areas in Queensland. The Cassowary Coast Local Government area was subject to this process with new land valuations taking effect from 30 June 2022. In determining statutory land values, valuers research the property market, examine trends and analyse sales information. The valuers also inspect individual properties, interview vendors and consider the use and zoning under Council’s Planning Scheme. The date of effect for the valuation is 30 June 2022, however the date of valuation occurred on 1 October 2021. Mayor Mark Nolan said the valuations are decided by the Queensland Government however have a direct
impact on Council rates. “The last time the Cassowary Coast received land valuations was in 2020, and the overall land value decreased by -2.3%. “Council notes due to the movement in the local market across the last 12 months that land valuations have significantly increased in some locations. “Council uses the unimproved or site valuation to calculate the general levy for our rates, increases in land value do not increase the total rate yield for Council but do impact the way rates are distributed. “Land values usually increase when demand for land exceeds the supply of available land. “The Cassowary Coast has seen an increase in sales as the demand for property increased as many

Southerners have invested or relocated to the area from city living. “If you do not agree with your land valuation, you can lodge an objection with the Queensland Government within 60 days of the date of issue of the valuation notice to the Department of Natural Resources,” said Councillor Nolan. SCENIC LOCATIONS ON OFFER FOR ROADSIDE VENDOR OPPORTUNITIES Roadside vendors are a common sight when travelling and often offer a distinctive insight into the culinary delights of the region. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Councillor Trudy Tschui said from the diverse offering of tropical fruit and vegetables to a great cup of coffee; roadside vending contributes in a unique way to our local economy and activation of precincts. Council supports roadside vending where it provides a positive benefit for the community, is supportive of fixed
local businesses and products and does not adversely affect the amenity of the area or environment. Council aims through its guidelines to ensure that roadside vending does not impact on the viability of commercial fixed business areas. This bricks and mortar first approach sees approved vendors operating a minimum of 400 meters away. “In a positive move to strengthen roadside vending in our area. Council invites two separate tenders for the
commercial use of Council controlled areas for roadside vending, with the picturesque locations of Perry Harvey Jetty, Mission Beach and Fitzgerald Esplanade, Innisfail available. “Roadside vendors in these locations will give locals and tourists a taste of what the Cassowary Coast has on offer and will complement the traditional brick and mortar businesses nearby. By opening these two additional locations through the tender process will ensure that all interested parties have
