Daintree flood damage repaired THE iconic Daintree River is under repair after floodwaters caused erosion in its lower reaches. Tree-planting and earthworks have strengthened the river’s banks near the Daintree Village, where land washed away in record floods in recent years. Terrain NRM’s Jen Mackenzie said almost 9000 young plants were now helping to stabilise the bank along two stretches of eroded land, where rockwork is the new foundations. “There was nothing left to hold the soil in place in these sections,’’ she said. “The vegetation had been washed away and the erosion was only getting worse.”

Briefs Meet the Candidates

Mission Beach Community Association is hosting a forum on Tuesday, October 13 for local residents to meet the local candidates for the upcoming election. The event starts at 6pm at Mission Beach Resort and all are welcome. COVID-19 rules apply.

Bird counting exercise

Terrain NRM has been working with landholders and contractors on Disaster Relief Funding projects, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Grazier Barry Osborne is one of a number of landholders in the Daintree region whose river frontage has been part of the project. Mr Osborne said big floods had taken their toll on riverside land in the Daintree’s lower reaches. “With two record floods in the last four or five years, the river has cut into the land,’’ he said. “There was a 10m-high bank here years ago but there is hardly any bank at all now and the river has moved in about

More resilient waterways: Streambank restoration work along the Daintree River and nearby Douglas Creek. (The boat in the pic is one of the Daintree river cruises.) 30m, creating big washouts. “This is loamy, sandy soil so floods knock the country around badly.” About 2km of riverbank has been repaired as part of the project, on two Daintree River properties and another on nearby Douglas Creek, a tributary of the Daintree. Ms Mackenzie said 20-30m

buffer zones of trees were being planted. “The combination of engineered rockwork and trees is the best option at these sites, with the rockwork acting as reinforcement until the trees establish themselves,’’ she said. “There has been plenty of interest in these sites – they were even part of the commentary on Daintree river cruises while

work was underway. By stabilising the creek and riverbanks, we are also helping waterway ecosystems and, ultimately, the Great Barrier Reef.” Similar work has been completed at five other sites in the Mossman and Daintree areas as part of the ongoing Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements project. Work is also underway at two other sites.

The Cairns community is being invited to again join a citizen science exercise that provides a snapshot of birds in the region. Cairns Regional Council will for the fourth consecutive year sponsor the Aussie Backyard Bird Count program, which has been running in various parts of Australia for seven years. Conducted in October, the count allows the Australia’s national bird conservation charity (Birdlife Australia) to examine trends in bird communities over time. The data also forms part of Council’s annual sustainability report card and helps to inform Green Space Our Place and other planting projects. To get involved visit www.aussiebirdcount.org.au

RFDS flying high with support THE Royal Flying Doctor Service Near and Far Volunteer Auxiliary, serving a wide region of Northern Queensland, was the beneficiary of a wonderful donation of $500 from the Atherton Lioness

Club on Sunday, October 18.

WITH its physical manifestation unable to go ahead due to COVID-19 restrictions earlier this year, the iconic Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) moved online with resounding success.

book posts and livestreams reached more than 2.5 million people in 80 countries while the 2020 program website was visited 12,968 times by 85 countries.

Lioness Clubs have been doing community fundraising for many years and as they are now unfortunately being disbanded, have decided to donate their funds to other

worthy community fundraising agencies in the North. Fundraising for the RFDS has been limited to the collection tins widely dispersed throughout North Queensland during the COVID pandemic

so this donation has come at an especially vital time for the organisation and is greatly appreciated, said Near and Far President, Mrs Brenda Agius. Fortunately, with the eas-

ing of restrictions, the Auxiliary expects to be back into full fundraising mode operating a stall at the upcoming Jacaranda Festival in Herberton Saturday, 18 October Mrs Agius said.

Deadly results at this year’s CIAF Now in its 11th year, CIAF launched launched “The Cultural Revolution” its first ever digital program spanning 10 days and comprising more than 40 individual and free-of-charge to view online events held between Friday August 14 and Sunday August 23. For its inaugural online iteration, CIAF’s Face-

Art collectors and buyers showed unwavering support with CIAF exhibition sales tallying $330,781, up by more than $4,000 compared to 2019. However, according to CIAF’s Artistic Director Janina Harding, the value of the festival is measured by much more than just numbers. In one of CIAF’s eight

gallery exhibitions, the Undercurrents - Cook 2020 exhibition, artists surveyed the impact of Cook while addressing the imbalance of written colonial history versus First Peoples’ oral history. This exhibition alone accounted for almost 20 per cent of sales, thus proving CIAF a valuable and resounding platform for First Peoples’ conversations.

Ms Harding said the event’s commitment to create an online presence, though exhaustive in terms of production and the logistics associated with curating 36

hours of compelling content, paid off exponentially.

“We embraced culture and technology simultaneously to fast track the ‘cultural evolution’ while most critically, supporting artists with the continuation of their art practice at a time of uncertainty and quarantine. “The benefits of art-making from both an economic and mental health perspective is recognised as part of CIAF’s social responsibility,” Ms Harding said. Ms Harding praised the efforts of CIAF’s team, its

partners, the artists and art centres who overcame all the challenges posed, including the freight of artwork from remote communities during lockdown, to bring the exhibition to life. In its 11-year history CIAF has generated approximately $8 million in art sales which has been returned to the artistic community to further develop their practice and recognition for Queensland’s two Indigenous cultures and diverse art movement.

ONYA BIKE FOR MENTAL HEALTH

FROM PAGE 1

FUN, fitness, amazing scenery, and raising money and awareness for suicide prevention – if you’re a local mountain biking enthusiast then the Totally Mental Bike Ride is for you! Southside Mountain Bike Club (SMBC) will hold the inaugural Totally Mental Bike Ride during mental health week on October 17 this year. All money raised will go to the Declan Crouch Fund for youth suicide prevention, which is significant for the SMBC after one of their club members and close friends lost his brother Lucius to suicide in January 2019. “Lucius was a keen mountain biker who used to build trails and jumps with his brothers on their property, but tragically at age 32, the pressure of life took its toll on him,” said SMBC president Daryl Blain.

“Youth suicide is on the rise and the age is getting younger, and in Australia we lose more than 2000 people each year to suicide. “Last year we raised $1700 for the Declan Crouch Foundation, and we are hoping to do even better this year. “Fresh air, exercise, social activity and being out in nature are all good for mental health so a bike ride is the perfect way to raise awareness.” Meeting at the Goldsborough Goldfields Campground at 8:30am, riders will enjoy a relaxed-pace, eight-kilometre undulating trail ride with views of the Mulgrave River and lush rainforest, to the top causeway, which is expected to take around three hours. At the top causeway there will be a support vehicle with water and light refreshments, before participants return to

the Goldborough Goldfields day use area for a debrief, raffle draw and barbecue. The debrief will include an address by registered psychologist Helen Mason, as well as club members with lived experiences of suicide and presentations about improving wellbeing, reducing stigma and tips to recognise and respond to others in need. Participation costs $30 which includes the barbecue and a T-Shirt, and there are more than $2500 worth of prizes up for grabs in the raffle. Biggest reef snapshot ever

Cairns Local News

Briefs

Don’t Rubbish our backyard

Surveillance equipment, new signage and education programs, are just a few of the measures to be put in place to deter illegal dumping throughout the Cassowary Coast. Following the State Government’s waste levy introduced in July 2019, Council has recorded a four-fold increase in reports of illegal dumping . Illegal dumping hotspots on the Cassowary Coast include Waldock Road, Kurrimine Beach, Jubilee Bridge, Ella Bay, Sundown Road and Polly Creek with residents of these surrounding areas encouraged to be extra vigilant about reporting such activities.

TANYA MURPHY HUNDREDS of amateur and professional photographers will take thousands of photographs at more than 100 different reefs over the next 11 weeks to document the condition of corals at the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Reef Census is an initiative of Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, delivered in partnership with the University of Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Australian Institute of Marine Science with support from James Cook University, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the University of Tasmania. A diverse range of vessels from tourism and dive boats, to research ships and superyachts will work collectively across the Reef’s 2300-kilometre length, from Lady Elliot Island in the south to the

remote far north, to carry out the largest reef reconnaissance ever. Snorkelling and diving volunteers, who do not need any knowledge of coral biology, will take wide-angle photographs of large sections of reef across 100-metre long sections to capture as much coral as possible. The pictures will then be uploaded to www.greatreefcensus. org along with their GPS location, so scientists can remotely analyse the photographs. To help with the vast number of photographs expected, citizen scientists from around the world will also be invited to participate online to help analyse the images, while Artificial Intelligence technology will also be used. UTS Future Reefs Program Associate Professor David Suggett said this new method of volunteers, requiring little training,

Snorkellers and divers have started snapping photographs with GoPro cameras for the Great Reef Census. Photo courtesy Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. gathering data photographically to be analysed later, allows a much larger area to be surveyed much faster than with traditional methods where trained surveyors assess coral health while in the water. “Whilst existing survey methods have been central for informing reef health and management decision making for decades, we need new ‘data intensive’ meth-

ods that can fill in the many gaps we have for tracking reef condition,” said Professor Suggett. He said one of the main goals was to find key healthy reefs which were able to survive and spawn to regenerate their neighbours after a stress event like coral bleaching, so reef protection resources could be used where they would make the biggest impact. The participants for this year

have already been appointed but the ambition is to scale it up in 2021 and get tourists involved, allowing anyone to submit photos to the census. The project is funded by the partnership between the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, the Prior Family Foundation and the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre.

At a grass-roots prevention level, the program will also engage an education officer who will be jointly funded by Council with the Queensland Government’s Illegal Dumping Partnership Program to engage the community through schooling and support programs. It is intended that this dedicated resource will also assist Council to boost intelligence and data reporting on illegal dumping activities to inform future mitigation strategies.

New wetland habitat unveiled

Clump Point up for grabs

Cattana Wetlands’ volunteers Geoff McClure, Sandy Long and Prue Fitzpatrick with Member for Barron River Craig Crawford, Councillor Rhonda Coghlan and NQ Civil Services Operations Director Jamie Naylor set up a branch for birds to perch on at the new sedge swamp wetland habitat at Cattana wetlands. THE $164 million Smithfield Bypass Project will leave an environmental legacy thanks to a unique partnership between the construction contractor and a passionate group of volunteers. Smithfield Bypass Project contractor Highway Construction and Albem Operations Joint Venture (HAJV) worked closely with members of Cairns Regional Council’s Green Space Our Place volunteer program, the Jabirus, to develop a new wetland habitat in the Cattana Wetlands reserve, adjacent to the bypass alignment.

The HAJV engaged a local Indigenous-owned company, NQ Civil Services to construct the wetland as a part of their continued commitment to promoting Indigenous businesses. Located west of the main Jabiru Lake, and on the loop road to Jacana Pool at the intersection of Jabiru Track, the site is bounded by remnant Feather Palm Forest to the west and established, revegetated forest to the right. The transformation process required excavating and removing ground cover to water level, one metre in depth with a slight gradient

that, in time, will promote the development of mud flats. Soil removed was then used to create ‘bunds’ encasing the swamp. The Jabirus are now landscaping the swamp and surrounding bunds with a variety of native flora including water plants suitable for Magpie Geese and Pandanus for Crimson Finch nesting habitats and aesthetics before the start of the wet season. The Smithfield Bypass Project is expected to finish in 2021, weather permitting.

The facility will offer a twolane public boat ramp, two berthing pontoons, a floating walkway, six pen berths and five swing moorings. Once

constructed, ongoing management of the facility will be handed over to the Cassowary Coast Regional Council. Turning trash into treasured art Mission Arts MISSION Arts is thrilled to be hosting “UPCYCLED” exhibition from Friday October 16 to November 18. This exhibition offers an alternative approach in contemporary art by showcasing examples of found, old or reusable objects that artists recycled by transforming them into art. Mission Arts artist Sally Moroney said artists were always exploring new and different mediums to inspire themselves and create art, but this did not have to come

from expensive materials. “The message of this exhibition is that anyone can transform waste materials, useless or unwanted products into clever and creative works of art,” she said. “Any castoff materials can be used such as excess packaging, junk mail, plastics, metal, canvas - the list is endless. “It’s a unique opportunity for everyone to be creative, thought-provoking, inspiring but most of all let it be fun.”

Mission Arts embraces people from of all ages, styles, from emerging talent to established artists to exhibit alongside each other. Opening night is at 6pm on Friday, October 16 at Lot 1, MARCS Park, Cassowary Drive, Mission Beach. Bookings essential by phoning 07 40886116 or email info@ missionarts.com.au. This is a free event with a cash bar and light nibbles. The exhibition will be open daily from 10 am – 2 pm.

Tanks Art Centre DURING June to August, the Cairns public were invited to come and create artworks using reclaimed materials as part of the 2020 Tropical Steampunk Upcycled workshops.

Well attended by enthusiastic participants aged seven to seventy five, these workshops resulted in a variety of pieces including woven garlands, lanterns, Lost and Found Puppets and a collective piece of a large

skeleton style Octopus.

A selection of these quirky and curious artworks are now on exhibition at the Tanks Arts Centre until November 1. Steampunk is a genre of science fiction inspired by 1800s technology, such as clockwork and steam-powered machinery. Cairns Regional Council Community Events funded the six workshops with three of

OPEN BORDERS Yes please, we need to kick-start Cairns Open borders will help. But are they closed by the Premier to keep the Prime Minister out of QLD during the election campaign. Norbet, Cairns

TAMING THE BLACK DOG We rolled out of September and straight into October. This year is barrelling past, but really October is one month we should pause and reflect upon. October is the month that could change tens of millions of Australian’s lives.

SPEND IT LOCAL This Christmas, let’s buy locally. Please nothing from eBay or Amazon. Head into a store with a door and spend our money with a retailer who supports the community. Keep it local.

Bob, Mareeba CAIRNS LOCAL NEWS Love this newspaper. Awesome way of getting local information & it is free & independent. When are you going to have an app coming, as that would make it even better?

October is Mental Health Awareness Month. Considering the year we are all experiencing, this month could be the most telling for us all.

Inspiring story last week on Zara. You seem to cover alot of women in sport. Keep this up.

The statistics are freightening. One in every sixteen Australians suffer from depression each year. Depression is not something to be ashamed of, nor is it something that you can just ‘snap out of’ or ‘buck your ideas up’.

WAYNE’S WORLD Fridges are for drinks you drongo, not ya spreads. What planet is Wayne on. Plus pineapple belongs on a pizza.

Depression is a medical condition. It can cause us to withdraw from our family and friends. It can also cause us to go to elebrate lengths to disguise the condition and put on a publically happy face.

ELECTION ISSUES Sick of the road works coming into town from Trinity every day. It’s a total stuff up. Are they spending money for the sake of spending it?

We have to accept, we are human, not machines. We have our highs and our lows. If our car laboured to make it up the Kuranda Range, lacking power and backfiring, we would take it immediately to the mechanic and have it serviced, and tuned-up. When we struggle in life with our ‘Kuranda Ranges’, we need to reach out, ask for help, and most importantly, if we see others struggling, or we even suspect they may be struggling, we really need to reach out and ask R U OK? October can be a critical month for all of us. It could be the month where we change our lives forever or help someone around us forever change theirs. Reach out, sit down and talk, open up to a friend or partner. I know it can be really hard and we feel vunerable when we open up, but this month is the month to make a change. What can we do locally to help raise awareness during Mental Health Awareness Month. Cairns Southside Mountain Bike Club will be staging thier Totally Mental Bike Ride on Saturday October 17. Join in, show your support, help change your life and the lives of friends. All funds raised will go to the Declan Crouch Fund for youth suicide. Make October a good month for all, and get Onya Bike for Mental Health.

Love the discussion topic each week presented by Wayne. Pineapple on pizza, scrunching or folding and now whether we keep our peanut paste in the fridge. Is it peanut paste or peanut butter? There’s a new topic for Wayne. Suzie, Edge Hill

ANON, Cairns Thank you for covering this event for our youth in Cairns. We need politicians and corporations to become mature responsive adults to a range of concerns raised by our young people. Faster

Roger, Trinity What difference does it make if we are a uni hospital. The Base was fine. Name does not improve an already great service.

What a mistake it would be to open the borders. We are safe here in Cairns and the federal member wants to introduce thousands of possibly infected people to our city. This is not right. If we get a second wave here or a situation like Melbourne it will destroy Cairns. Anyway these thousands stranded overseas choose to ignore government instructions to come home. They knew better and now they realise they should have come home before the border closed. Sorry guys, wait it out, you had your chance. We don’t want infections here. Werner. Cairns

I would have thought with the impact upon business as a result of COVID that any business you walk into or phone would be bending over backwards to win your custom. Not the case here in Cairns sadly. I called four companies last week, seeking professional services. One local and 3 nationally based. Spoke to someone each time. Asked for a quote in writing, we wanted to engage their services immediately. Have I received a quote or a follow up. NO! Seriously, are we doing that well that we ignore business that comes in our door? Or perhaps the JobKeeper allowance has created a massize number of ‘zombie workers’ who really do not give a toss? CLEANING UP THE NORTH MORE than 230 bags of rubbish have been collected by 300 volunteers during the annual Great Northern Clean Up, which wrapped up recently. Cairns Regional Council coordinated 15 clean-up sites from Ellis Beach in the north to Goldsborough Valley in the south throughout the month of September, picking up 11,950 litres of litter, or 50 wheelie bins. were the most commonly discarded items followed by drink containers and cigarette butts. Other items that littered the region’s parks and waterways included car bodies, construction materials, children’s toys and nappies, and batteries. Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the annual Great Northern Clean Up was an important event for the community and the environment. “This year, hundreds of

families and individuals have helped to remove 239 bags of rubbish from litter hotspots. When you add in the hard waste that was also collected, it’s more than a tonne of litter and waste removed from our parks and waterways,” said Cr Manning. “The obvious benefit of the clean ups is that we have removed a large volume of litter from the environment that might have been washed out to the reef with the wet season rains.

River silting a problem THE leaders of the Labor, LNP and Katter Australia parties have been asked to state their positions on the problem of silting of rivers and estuaries along the Great Barrier Reef, amidst growing complaints from coastal communities that their waterways have become utterly un-navigable. President of Cassowary Coast Economic Development Group, Suzanne Bassette, has made the public call following a lack of response on the issue, which she has described is a ticking economic time bomb for North Queensland. “Many coastal towns and communities have been shouldering the burden for decades now to keep the reef clean and protected from land run offs”, said Ms Bassette. “Blind Freddy can see that our rivers and estuaries have systematically

been left to silt up and ‘return to nature’ as part of this strategy. “It has reached the point you can’t even get boats into the rivers of some of our major coastal towns, and this situation is now holding our economic future to ransom” said Ms Bassette. “People down south would be truly saddened to see how communities are suffering as a consequence of successive government policies and actions - policies which are not obliged to care about people … ever! Policies which work against people making a better lives for themselves.” “What we’ve seen is over decades now, coastal communities have been forced to rely on agriculture and welfare as our major economic drivers”, said Ms Bassette. “All this, while a lucra-

tive blue economy literally sails past us, with its blue nomads, pleasure cruisers, eco-tourism, fisheries and boating services opportunities. “Eg, Innisfail is a quaint little river town where you can park a boat and literally walk to a supermarket for supplies”, said Ms Bassette. “Only now, the town’s twin rivers are reportedly silting upstream of town, and if you ask anyone in power about this debacle, you just hear the sound of crickets chirping. “Clearly, if politicians are serious about North Queensland’s wellbeing, they need to support our coast towns to open up to blue economies in ways that work in harmony with the reef. We need to be able to live in our own environment and grow our prosperity at the same time.”

Covid Safe Expo for the Tropical Far North

Sailability past president Andy Murray, founding member Don Tenant and current president Jeff Croft preparing to launch the first of the new SV14 boats.

No barriers for aspiring sailors TANYA MURPHY THERE are no barriers for aspiring sailors after Sailability Cairns launched four new boats specially designed for use by people living with a disability on Monday.

“We now have more than 30 sailors and some of the people who joined with no sailing experience are now at a level where they are training others.”

The SV14 boats are the first of their kind to be launched in Australia and are specially designed to allow two people with a disability to sail each boat, with one to handle the ropes and another steering at the helm.

The boat components were built in China and shipped to Cairns where local volunteers assembled them, painted them and built trailers for them.

After an accident eight years ago, founding member Don Tenant wasn’t about to let quadriplegia get in the way of his passion for sailing and he joined others to found Sailability Cairns in 2014. He said the club previously had five smaller Hansa access dinghies, but these new high-performance boats would allow the club to start holding local competitions and training for state-wide, interstate and international competitions.

Sailability’s Grant Officer Gordon Raleigh said the total cost of the four boats was around $80,000 and one entire boat was funded by Rotary International and the four Cairns Rotary Clubs, while grants and private donors also contributed. “Thanks to all the sponsors, and the volunteers who have done an amazing job getting these boats ready,” he said.

“Sailability Cairns provides opportunities for people with a disability to discover the joy and the challenge of sailing,” he said.

Sailability meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week at the Cairns Yacht Club and welcomes new members, as well as volunteers without disabilities who are much needed to assist the sailors.

“Every year since our foundation, our membership has doubled in size.

For more information or to get involved, visit the Sailability Cairns Facebook page.

THE highly anticipated Cairns Expo will open on Friday 9th October at the Cairns Showgrounds under an approved Covid Safe Plan. Event management specialist, Bob Carroll, from the Queensland based company Australian Events said that his staff had spent considerable time working with Queensland Health to ensure that all precautions are taken to provide a safe environment for his staff, exhibitors and the thousands of visitors who will attend the event. The Cairns Expo has been an annual showcase of the very latest caravans, camper trailers, 4x4s, lifestyle and holiday ideas for the last five years. “As part of the Covid Safe Event Plan tickets will not be available at the gate. Visitors have to go to the event web

site www.CairnsExpo.com. au and purchase their tickets. Adults are $ 12, Seniors $ 10 and children with parents are free but all have to register on the website and they will be issued a bar code, even for the kids. They get scanned into the event and then get scanned out as well when they leave. This is very important for Queensland Health tracking and it helps us keep everyone safe.” The event promises a host of new release products never seen before in Cairns and as a result the organisers are expecting record crowds. “My advice is to carpool with your family members and get there early. Parking is nearby and free. There will be fishing and casting demonstrations over the three days with renowned fishing expert Dave Moss on the Shimano

Fishing Show. Outback adventurer and camp oven guru, King Brown, will be showing visitors how to have fun cooking at home on in the bush usCairnsExpo

Line Markings Cruise control taking your it’s very simple control away IT seems our roads are busier than a Pro Hart painting. We are not talking about traffic, it’s the road and lane markings we refer to. So are we fully aware of the road rules? Here’s a chance to catch up and check. The orange car wants to turn right. Are they allowed to drive over the painted island to enter the turning lane? It’s a yes!

You can drive on a painted traffic island that’s surrounded by a single continuous line for up to 50m to enter a turning lane that begins immediately after the island, to enter or leave a road, and to overtake a cyclist. When driving on a painted island to enter a turning lane, you must give way to traffic already in, or entering the turning lane.

VIRTUALLY every vehicle sold today has a cruise control function as standard or an optional extra. Cruise control is designed to maintain a steady speed for the vehicle without manual driver intervention. We know the advantages of cruise control. Driving long distances using cruise control will maximise our fuel efficiency, reduce the chance of accidentally exceeding the speed limit, so long as you

have the speed correctly set. The key to getting the best from your cruise control is using the function as it was intended and avoiding using the cruise function when we need greater control over our car and greater attention to driving conditions. We should therefore avoid using cruise control when we are in the city, with plenty of chances for driving variables. Avoid using cruise func-

tion in heavy traffic, in wet or slippery conditions or where braking or lower speeds are required due to specific road conditions. Cruise control is a fantastic feature for your vehicle; however it needs to be used with close attention to the road, weather conditions as well as traffic condition. From personal experience, the use of cruise control over long journeys can lead to a relaxation of the

drivers’ attention and potentially lead to the a lack of control over your vehicle at highway speeds. With any motoring journey it is important to arrive safely and also arrive as relaxed as you can be. Cruise control can help you greatly with these outcomes. The key is to always use wisely and always maintain an appropriate level of control over your vehicle.

LOCKDOWN ROCK CAIRNS local singer songwriter Bobby Maguire has announced the release of his new single Exoskeleton, a fiery rock song written and recorded during lockdown as an expression of frustration as well as a message of inspiration to those feeling trapped. The song is accompanied by an action packed video clip featuring car stunts, kid-

napping and the return of the mysterious Masked Man from Bobby Maguire’s Fight the Fear music video. Produced by Kris Hutchinson at The Studio Hutch and with the assistance of a Q Music Grant Bobby Maguire was able to create Exoskeleton which is inspired by fellow Queensland rockers Violent Soho and the likes of Nirvana, The Police and The Pixies.

This energetic track features thick guitar riffs, angsty vocals and a catchy chorus audiences will be singing well before the end of the song. In a show of support for those struggling at the moment, Bobby Maguire has given fans the option to pay if and what they want to download Exoskeleton via bandcamp.com Exoskeleton is out now on all music platforms.

Cairns Local News

The birds that time forgot PETER MCCULLAGH THE north of Australia is renowned for two of the world’s most pre-historic living creatures, crocodiles and cassowaries. It would be fair to say that there are many residents, whilst familiar with both icons of the north; who have not actually seen neither a crocodile nor a cassowary in the wild. The Southern Cassowary can be found here in the lush rainforests in the regions surrounding Cairns. Standing two metres tall with a crowning casque on their head, the cassowary is classified as one of the most dangerous birds in the world. Here’s a few tips to bear in mind, when you confront your first cassowary. The cassowary is a large, wild and potentially a very dangerous animal. Keep your distance, show caution, resist the temptation to feed them and never approach their chicks.

So where’s the best spots to find a cassowary in the wild. Not surprisingly three of the top four spots to see a cassowary happen to be in the Cassowary Coast. Head south from Cairns, 100 kilometres and you will find Etty Bay. Located 15 kilometres south east from Innisfail, Etty Bay is a peaceful town with a beautiful soft white-sandy beach. The best time to spot the Southern Cassowary is early mornings or late afternoons, where they can be found strolling peacefully on the beach. The drive from the highway to Etty Bay can also be a time to spot a cassowary, so please exercise caution in your drive, slow down and be aware of these magnificent birds, they have zero road sense and you would not want to kill one on your expedition to spot an endangered Southern Cassowary. If you head further south on your quest to spot the elusive bird in the wild, you can take in the sights of Mission Beach The Djiru National Park in Mission Beach has the Licuala Fan Palm Walk. This easy 1.2 kilometre loop track is another great place to spot the elusive cassowary. You walk through lush rainforest, abounding with Instagram-able photo opportunities and the big plus is the opportunity to spot a cassowary in its rain-forest environment. The Licuala Fan Palm Walk is 15 minutes by car from Mission Beach and a little under 2 hours from Cairns. If you do head down to Mission Beach, head further south to South Mission. Virtually any of the major roads around South Mission will be great places to spot a cassowary. The ideal viewing time is early morning or late afternoon. If you want to head north of Cairns, head to the Daintree where you can also see cassowaries in the wild. The Jindalba Boardwalk in the Daintree is a sensational place to explore the Daintree as well as a great spot to spot these elusive birds. The Daintree is approximately 3 and a half hours drive north of Cairns and is world renowned for its beauty and heritage.

Affordable Private Transfers throughout FNQ Travel between Cairns and anywhere in the Tablelands or Cassowary Coast for around half the price of a taxi. Conditions apply Book Sapphire Transfers for a private door to door transfer from Babinda, Innisfail, Mareeba, Atherton etc to Cairns (Airport/Hospital/City) or vice versa.

Catch a flight, make that appointment or do your Christmas shopping in Cairns for a surprisingly low price. Grab some friends and share the cost to make it even cheaper. Young kids? No problem. We can provide baby and booster seats free of charge. Just let us know at time of booking.

The Rising Tide WHEN the COVID-19 Pandemic was announced and the world went into isolation, and governments ordered the closure of theatres, festivals, concerts and other mass gatherings, organisers of this year’s highly anticipated Cooktown Expo 2020 had little choice other than to postpone the event until 2021. Now, with a fresh format, new Creative Director (Vanessa Gillen, formally the General Manger at CIAF), and an empowering new focus, word across the Cape is that next year’s Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 – The Rising Tide is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. While the 2020 event centred around the 250-year commemoration of James Cook’s arrival to Cooktown, the Cooktown & Cape York Expo 2021 theme – The Rising Tide – is a reference to the first recorded act of reconciliation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians and celebrates the shared history, heritage and culture of the Cape with a vision to educate, delight and inspire.

Next year’s event has also been designed to be a catalyst for regional economic renewal: the dynamic new format will showcase Far North Queensland and Cape York’s history, culture, visual and performing arts, agriculture and businesses – with an emphasis on the synergy and diversity of Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses across the Cape. The new format that will take place in Cooktown from June 11-20, 2021, includes ten days of predominantly free events, that kick off with with the Reconciliation Rocks Concert, featuring Busby Marou, Troy Cassar-Daly and Mau Power, as well as several popular local artists, dancers and performers. From June 14-17, the Cape York Business Expo will bring local, regional and state businesses together to network, promote and showcase their products and services with the vision that this will help foster creative tourism and business ventures and stronger partnerships between Cape York, Far North Queensland and Indigenous communities. The Business Expo will

A haven for delicious food TANYA MURPHY AFTER a beautiful morning of strolling along, enjoying the sun and palm lined beach at Palm Cove, my friends and I found the perfect place to stop for a relaxed lunch at the northern end of Williams Esplanade, near the jetty. Coffee Haven has been a huge hit ever since it opened in 2009 and is in the top five rated restaurants in Palm

vice and delicious food.

belly cooked to perfection.

As well as fantastic barista coffee, Coffee Haven offers herbal teas, iced coffees, soft drinks, milkshakes, smoothies and a huge menu of modern café cuisine.

My friend ordered a Tex Mex burger, which has a spiced beef pattie, tomato relish, avocado, sour cream, jalapenos, bacon, cheese and salad and it didn’t stand a chance, it lasted about five seconds.

The café is also licensed from 10am and offers tap beer, spirits, cocktails and wine (because it’s always 5 o’clock when you’re at the beach). We pulled up bar stools on the verandah and ordered cold pressed juices to cool off while watching the beautiful waves and people drifting past. The lunch menu includes all the café classics such as salt and pepper calamari, wraps, Turkish rolls and salads, but we decided to take the chef’s recommendation to try the gourmet handmade burgers.

I ordered a “naughty pig” burger with belly pork, apple slaw, with peanuts, soy, chilli and ginger dressing and it was delicious with the pork

After an active morning we felt like we had earned a treat so we finished off by sharing a Mars Bar Freakshake, which is basically a tower of chocolate fudge, ice cream, cream, and chocolate sauce exploding out of an ice cold milkshake. This is too good to be allowed! Since it was the weekend we then finished off with a cocktail each to share a toast to a hugely successful afternoon of enjoying the best things in life – food, drinks and good company! Coffee Haven is open from 7am to 3pm on Monday to Friday and 7am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and has vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options.

Nothing beats the authentic taste of Il Forno. Traditional family recipes with genuine Italian flavours in the heart of Palm Cove. Yia Sou!

YIA Sou! Welcome to the home of Greek food here in Cairns. Fetta’s Greek Taverna on Grafton Street has been an icon in Cairns since 1975. If we were re-writing the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, we would have to say, “A great night out, comes from the Greek phrase, Fetta Taverna, meaning the best fun and best food in town.” The restaurant is simply authentic. White walls, blue accented windows, a large open kitchen that builds atmosphere and creates the ambiance you need to kick back, relax and enjoy a totally culinary and festive experience. It is often said that Greeks invented hospitality, our host George epitomises hospitality. A warm genuine welcome to each guest, along with a relaxed friendliness that makes you feel like family. It’s no wonder this restaurant has been successful for more

than 40 years. You have your choice of dining areas, the courtyard, a private function area or street-side relaxed dining. Your choice, whatever you want. We feasted totally during our visit. The Tzatziki Dip with Pitta bread was perfect. For mains we shared the Moussaka and the Calamari and Salad. Generous servings and the Moussaka was one of the best I have ever tasted. The Calamari was tender and I’m told locally sourced. There’s an extensive authentic menu that will suit everyone’s taste, you can even try the Zorba’s Feast, where for a flat price you can try a set menu with 8 courses, that’s great value. Restaurant: Fetta’s Greek Taverna Open 7 days for dinner, 5pm til late Lunch Monday to Friday 11am to 3pm. 99 Grafton Street Cairns.

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: On October 9, when the emotional moon in your sixth house of daily routine forms a harmonizing trine to communicator Mercury in your tenth house of career, you’ll be able to tune into your intuition just as easily as your rational thoughts when it comes to plotting out a game plan for reaching your current professional goals. Giving equal weight to your gut and your head can help you land on and pursue the next right move.

GEMINI: You’ll want to shake things up on the home front—perhaps trying on new techniques for better balancing your work and home lives—on October 10 when romantic Venus in your fourth house of home life forms a harmonizing trine to revolutionary Uranus in your twelfth house of spirituality. Adding a new practice, like weaving a regular meditation into your morning routine, could prove enlightening and helpful. As long as you’re enjoying something out of the ordinary, you’re sure to feel satisfied.

LIBRA: You’ll be in your feelings in a positive, harmony-bolstering way on October 11 when the emotional moon in your ninth house of higher learning forms a happy trine to the confident sun in your sign. Getting in touch with your intuition comes naturally and can fuel your personal and professional goals. You’ll do well to zero in on skills you’d like to hone-in order to boost your profile.

PISCES: You might be frustrated if it feels like the world is against a certain, heartfelt game plan you had in mind for spending time with loved ones or a partner on October 12 when the emotional moon in your fourth house of home life forms a tense square to romantic Venus in your seventh house of partnership. It’s totally natural to feel disappointed, but also know that this moment will pass.

CANCER: You’ll want to bring a shiny, innovative approach to your interactions with others on October 10 when romantic Venus in your third house of communication forms a positive trine to game-changer Uranus in your eleventh house of networking. If you’ve been thinking about heading up a brainstorm with colleagues or proposing a new volunteer project with friends, this could be an exciting time to do just that. As long as you’re straying from your usual mundane routine, you’ll feel thrilled and fired up.

SCORPIO: You’ll feel like your most rational thoughts are in sync with your heart’s desires on October 9 when the emotional moon in your ninth house of adventure forms a harmonizing trine to communicator Mercury in your sign. This could be an ideal time to plan an upcoming trip or have an overdue philosophical conversation with a loved one.

ARIES: You could feel like you’re firing on all cylinders on the job on October 10 when the emotional moon in your second house of income forms a harmonizing trine to lucky Jupiter, transformative Pluto, and taskmaster Saturn—all in your tenth house of career. Putting yourself out there and pitching a passion project could prove fruitful, as could sticking to tried-and-true fix-it plans for any concerns that pop up now. Tune into your intuition, and you’ll know how to best proceed.

LEO: Hitting it off with colleagues comes naturally on October 7 when the emotional moon in your eleventh house of networking forms a positive trine to the confident sun in your third house of communication. This could be a brilliant day to collaborate on a group project.

SAGITTARIUS: Working alongside friends or colleagues can prove exhilarating on October 9 when the intuitive moon in your seventh house of partnership forms a harmonizing trine to the confident sun in your eleventh house of networking. It’s easier than usual for everyone to get on the same page, and together, you can formulate a plan that helps you execute and cross the finish line on a crucial group project.

TAURUS: On October 10, relationship-oriented Venus, your ruling planet, in your fifth house of romance forms a harmonizing trine to revolutionary Uranus in your sign, and you’ll be itching to experience something truly pleasurable and out of the ordinary in your closest relationships or through a creative outlet. Your appetite for flirtation and fun might even catch you offguard. Satiating your need by getting out of your comfort zone (think taking an impromptu road trip or working with a new artistic medium) could prove emotionally gratifying.

VIRGO: It’s easier for you to express what’s in your heart and your head to friends on October 9, the emotional moon in your eleventh house of networking forms a harmonizing trine to information-gathering Mercury, your ruling planet, in your third house of communication. This moment could help you get even more in sync.

CAPRICORN: Expressing your most creative ideas to colleagues and friends can come even more naturally on October 9 when the emotional moon in your seventh house of partnership forms a positive trine to communicator Mercury in your eleventh house of networking. In turn, their feedback and collaboration could propel you to the next level. Trust that your head and your heart are in sync—which is sure to set you up for success.

League Games in Tully

Friday, October 9, 2020

Rugby league in Cairns this year has struggled due to an early cancellation due to COVID-19. A shortened senior competition was conducted when Tully, Cairns Brothers and the Pride combined to stage the Ken Frost Lightning Challenge. This 6 week competition provided valuable match time for players. The Challenge featured A Grade from the three teams, with the Northern Pride fielding two team to fill out a strong four team competition. The Reserve Grade as contested between Tully Tigers and Cairns Brothers. Brothers Football Manager,

Tim Rumford was pleased with the shortened competition. “The Challenge Cup gave the boys a chance to get engaged and set up the 2021 season. “The early call to suspend the season was made for the right reasons, so the Challenge Cup was a great addition. Cairns Brothers suffered a few injuries during the Challenge which impacted upon their performances; however Rumford was pleased with the form shown by both Jordon Biodi-Oda and Theo Majid playing in the halves for Cairns Brothers.

Do or Die Time

IT’S do or die this weekend in the local FNQ Premier league, with the Innisfail Cutters and the Southside Comets both playing for a spot in the Izmer Marine FNQ Premier League semi-finals. The Innisfail Cutters hold the slender advantage, currently sitting fourth on 14 points, while the Comets sit fourth on 13 points. The Cutters travel away to the Stratford Dolphins on Sunday and will know by kick off on Sunday what they need to do to stay in fourth, this is due to the Southside Comets travelling to the Northern Beaches to take on the Marlin Coast Rangers in a tricky engagement for the away side, taking on a Rang-

ers outfit with nothing to lose, giving youth a chance in the premier league, anything could happen, but the Comets need to win to force to keep pressure on the Cutters the next day. Meanwhile in the Ladies Premier League, the third placed Mareeba Bulls host the freshly crowned premiers, the Edge Hill Tigers, with the second placed Leichhardt Lions saving the bye, the Bulls could jump onto second with a positive result, while at the other end of ladder, the Stratford Dolphins and the Innisfail Cutters will be looking to finish the season on a high with the win.

Confronting life after football BRETT SINCLAIR FORMER Centrals Trinity Beach senior coach Wayne Sharkie has been around football a long time. His senior coaching journey began before many of his Bulldog players were born. He thinks the one thing that could improve in the game is player welfare off the field. Sharkie believes when the journey for a footballer or a coach comes to an end, it can be both brutal and confronting. Sometimes a phone call from someone to see how the player or coach is are doing is all that’s required. The call doesn’t have to be when their career is at the end, it could be along the way when they’re facing the challenges thrown at them both in sport or life in general. “Unfortunately most men won’t talk openly about the things that are troubling them.” This recently hit home with Sharkie when a footballer he recently coached took his own life. That player also lost a good mate in similar circumstances a year earlier. Losing a job and a partner as well, put him in a very vulnerable position. The player went back to his home town of Townsville to be around a support network he had known for many years. Sharkie kept in touch with the player and it appeared he was ok. He had a new job, was back playing football with his junior club and when Sharkie checked

in, the reply was, “thanks for checking in on me, I’ll always be ok.” That was the last contact he had with him. “This was the spur for me to try and make a difference and to help others that may find themselves in a similar position.” This was the second suicide he has confronted since COVID hit in March. “It has me thinking, can I have an impact in my local community to prevent this happening?” “When it comes to my sport, there needs to be more done regarding player welfare.” There is an organisation based in Melbourne called “Outside The Locker Room” founded by ex-Carlton footballer Jake Edwards. They conducted sessions with Sharkie’s former club in Cairns - the feedback from players was fantastic.” “The program had a positive impact on one player on the verge of doing something silly and he is still with us and doing well.” Sharkie got in contact with Outside The Locker Room in October last year to facilitate more sessions, but when COVID hit the project was “put on the back burner.” Sharkie would like to localise a similar program here in the Far North not only for AFL footballers but all sportspeople. He is in the process of getting the network started. “Even if it’s just a shoulder or an ear when they’re vulnerable and they have someone to call and catch up for a coffee and chat.” Sharkie believes the sport’s controlling body should employ

a welfare officer at the very least in a part time role to facilitate certain programs. You only have to look at Sharkie’s background, relocating to Cairns from Melbourne and taking up a senior coaching role at the Bulldogs with a two year deal, unfortunately let go after one year. “Even if a coach finishes up at the end of their tenure naturally, it would be a good idea for someone to make a call and see how they are doing.” “Sometimes it’s just a phone call that can make all the difference.” “Clubs have a role to play, but they’re hardly going to make that call, but the controlling bodies have a duty of care here.” Sport can be your best support mechanism and when it’s over it can also be terribly confronting.

This year COVID has put many of these speed humps and hurdles in our path and I believe that all players, coaches and volunteers have done an amazing job just to have a season.

CAIRNS RESERVES

I, along with Wayne Sharkie believe that it’s time more is done in the area of player welfare and by player welfare I include all coaches and volunteers in that. I also think Sharkie is on to something here and I truly hope that he gets the full support that will be needed, or at the very least this time around he gets that phone call.

TANYA MURPHY WITH summer fast approaching and COVID restrictions easing, local parents are being encouraged to enrol their infants and children in swimming lessons to give them a lifelong advantage in and around water.

swimming lessons,” she said.

Local swimming teacher Janet Evans said public swimming pools closed for months during COVID restrictions and many parents had stopped taking their children to swimming lessons.

“Outdoor activities are a massive part of Australian culture so children who don’t learn swimming can be disadvantaged later in life.

“Since we reopened in term three, many parents still have not returned with their children to

“That is a concern because if children don’t learn to be comfortable in the water at a young age, they risk falling behind and it can be very hard for them to catch up when they are older.

“Baby swimming lessons are held in the early morning and are directed towards helping you, the parent, confidently

teach your child to enjoy the water. Having fun is essential as children learn through play.” Half-hour swimming lessons are held at the Janet Evans swim school from Monday to Saturday. Sessions are held for babies, kindy kids and pre-school kids in the morning, with older kids in the afternoon and private sessions for adults are available upon request.
