ONYA BIKE FOR MENTAL HEALTH

FROM PAGE 1

FUN, fitness, amazing scenery, and raising money and awareness for suicide prevention – if you’re a local mountain biking enthusiast then the Totally Mental Bike Ride is for you! Southside Mountain Bike Club (SMBC) will hold the inaugural Totally Mental Bike Ride during mental health week on October 17 this year. All money raised will go to the Declan Crouch Fund for youth suicide prevention, which is significant for the SMBC after one of their club members and close friends lost his brother Lucius to suicide in January 2019. “Lucius was a keen mountain biker who used to build trails and jumps with his brothers on their property, but tragically at age 32, the pressure of life took its toll on him,” said SMBC president Daryl Blain.

“Youth suicide is on the rise and the age is getting younger, and in Australia we lose more than 2000 people each year to suicide. “Last year we raised $1700 for the Declan Crouch Foundation, and we are hoping to do even better this year. “Fresh air, exercise, social activity and being out in nature are all good for mental health so a bike ride is the perfect way to raise awareness.” Meeting at the Goldsborough Goldfields Campground at 8:30am, riders will enjoy a relaxed-pace, eight-kilometre undulating trail ride with views of the Mulgrave River and lush rainforest, to the top causeway, which is expected to take around three hours. At the top causeway there will be a support vehicle with water and light refreshments, before participants return to

the Goldborough Goldfields day use area for a debrief, raffle draw and barbecue. The debrief will include an address by registered psychologist Helen Mason, as well as club members with lived experiences of suicide and presentations about improving wellbeing, reducing stigma and tips to recognise and respond to others in need. Participation costs $30 which includes the barbecue and a T-Shirt, and there are more than $2500 worth of prizes up for grabs in the raffle.
