Last week we asked what could be done about homelessness in Cairns. Some of the comments are below.

Unfortunately, many choose to live on the streets and wouldn’t move into a homeless shelter even if there were additional spaces available. As for begging, it is illegal in Queensland and the police can take action if a complaint is made.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION

Which new airline and route should Cairns Airport attract to Cairns and why?

@cairnslocalnews station around the bend on the straight section of road.

We saw a male chick and, the now last remaining chick, feeding on remaining roadkill. We managed to deter them and they headed off for the night. Someone had moved the chick into the nearby bush, which is a bit of a mystery as was not reported to anyone. Warning signs should now be in place. If you see cassowaries, please put your hazard lights on to warn others.

The road from Mission to Tully has cassowaries everywhere at the moment so special attention and care is currently required by all. Truus Biddlecombe-Sanders, assistant secretary, Mission Beach Community Association

Free escape vents for helpful fishers

FISHERS who support research

The itinerant issue is getting worse throughout the CBD and on the Esplanade but apart from police tipping out their alcohol containers and moving them on, no-one in authority wants to tackle the problem. With international tourist numbers starting to increase this ugly side of Cairns needs to be fixed up now.

by reporting tagged mud crabs in Queensland can get their claws on free escape vents.

The reports will help researchers track the spawning migration of female mud crabs and learn more about the species.

The research will help ensure Queensland mud crab fisheries remained sustainable.

The research is part of a bigger project that aims to provide a better information base to assess and sustainably manage Queensland’s mud crab fisheries.

There is a lot of folklore about female mud crabs and where they go to spawn.

Reports of tag recaptures will help us understand where females move to and how long they live for. If you find a mud crab with a yellow tag on its carapace, text a photo of the crab—along with the date and capture location—to 0466 868 913. (There’s no need to remember this number: it’s print-

The regular homeless create a mess on the footpaths. They leave their food and drink containers and cigarette butts and move to a new, cleaner location. They don’t have the decency to clean up. The council needs to step up their cleaning duties.

Former Mayor Kevin Byrne created controversy in 1993 when a group of 84 hardcore anti-social itinerants volunteered to be bused back to Lockhart River. The problem disappeared overnight. But the bus broke down on the way and it became headline news. The authorities wouldn’t have the guts to do it today.

Phone app makes paying for parking easy

Cairns Regional Council

Residents can now pay for the exact number of minutes they park in the CBD, straight from their phone using the EasyPark app. EasyPark allows drivers to start and end their parking session on their phone, creating an exact payment, rather than guessing how long they may need and paying extra if they finish their lunch, shopping or business sooner than expected. Each app transaction includes a 10% service fee collected in full by EasyPark. Drivers must still abide by parking time limits – the app won’t accept parking payments beyond the signposted time limit. Normal rules also apply to disability, taxi, loading, no standing and bus bays.
