COMMUNITY CONNECT International Women’s Day photographic exhibition This year Cassowary Coast Regional Council will partner with Nina Lavarini Dawson to provide an empowering International Women’s Day exhibition showcasing botanical and eco printing techniques. Annually celebrated on 8th March, this exhibition will be featured at the Innisfail Shire Hall Community Art Space and the Innisfail and Mission Beach libraries from February to April of this year. The Birdtribe Wearable Art exhibition is funded through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which promotes the value of art, culture and heritage as the key force behind a diverse and culturally immersed

region. Local Mission Beach artist Nina Dawson said of her creative skills and influences that she is both a textile artist and photographer with a passion for plants and the natural world. “I research plants and hunt for colours in my local environment, gathering leaves, bark and pods for my dyeing cauldron. I experiment and tease the colour from them using the eco dye method, a type of ‘botanical alchemy’. I also use other natural dyes discovered when studying with master dyers in Mexico. The garments have been created for site specific portrait photographs in the natural landscape

of North Queensland,” said Ms Dawson. Nina’s art practice has been previously supported by the RADF program and highlights the fundamental role grants have in supporting creators of any kind in bringing their projects to life. Cassowary Coast Regional Councillor Trudy Tschui said that the work and projects supported by the grants show how much local talent and creativity is harboured in the Cassowary Coast. “The Cassowary Coast has a wealth of opportunities in the creative space and in assisting these projects with grant support, generates a more vibrant and

enriched community,” Cr Tschui said. Council provides financial assistance to support arts and cultural projects through the RADF program closing 25 March 2022. Interested community members wanting to seek out available grants can visit: https:// bit.ly/3GGsdV0 . Alternatively please enquire to Council at 40302255 or email cdo@ccrc.qld.gov.au. The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Cassowary Coast Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council wishes to advise that some of our departments are operating on limited staff due to Covid-19. As a result, works are being prioritised from ‘low’ to ‘critical’ using a risk-based approach, in line with Council’s Business Continuity Plan. As a result, depending on the risk determined, some of your customer requests submitted may be delayed which understandably can cause frustration and angst. Council would like to ensure the Cassowary Coast Community that we value all of your customer requests, and will do our best to ensure we meet your needs, however we appreciate your patience and allowing us a little more time to do what is needed. We hope, as the pandemic eases, to have all team members back on board and operating as per usual. We thank you for your understanding.

The works include the construction of a new entry and exit access areas, a sealed carpark, new drainage, as well as a new Tip Shop Shed. Council’s goal is to reach a recycling rate of 60% by 2025 in line with the Queensland State Government’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy. recycling zones, ensuring the recycling process is made easy for the whole community. tions can be made to your local second hand store. Works are expected to take three months, with hopes of being completed by the end of March 2022, site and weather conditions permitting. BIN BUSY IN 2022

To match the need for transporting bulk waste from our transfer stations to landfills across the region, custom bulk waste transport bins are being fabricated for all seven of the Cassowary Coast Waste Transfer Stations. Twenty bins, in two sizes (30 cubic meters and 15 cubic metres) are being custom built and made by inmates at the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre. This type of work assists the inmates with upskilling and training, to help them gain and maintain employment when released from custody. Lotus Glen Correctional Centre have already delivered six of the 30 cubic meter bins with the balance being fabricated and delivered throughout the year. The bins will be very easy to spot as they have been painted in bright sea green to align with Cassowary Coast Waste Facility branding. Look out for the bright blue bins on our roads as they transport waste to landfill and transfer station sites across the region, as well as to Mareeba, where all our wet waste is buried. These bins will provide the community with more opportunities to separate dry waste, wet waste, metal, cardboard and other waste streams. Remember to always reduce, reuse and recycle to ensure nothing goes to waste in our region. Look out for these bins in 2022 and see if you can spot the Nothing to Waste symbols! For further information on what can be recycled at Transfer Station across the region visit: www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/recycling-transfer-stations or phone Council on 1300 763 903 or via email at enquiries@cassowary.qld.gov.au.

Why we Love the Cassowary Coast I love the aquatic centre, the Mission Beach Community Art Centre and the libraries. I am grateful for C4 and Brettacorp and other rehabilitation and corridor creation teams farmers and land owners. I am grateful for the national parks and marine parks especially the ones near Mission Beach which I have many hard working community members to be grateful to for their dedication and determination to protect and conserve for visitors, future generations and for the animals and plants that depend on enough areas being protected to survive.
