community’s aspirations to build a mountain bike tourism economy and Council’s adopted ‘Cardwell Tropical Mountain Bike Project Feasibility Report’. The Australian Government, through the COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund, has allocated close to $500,000 for the Cardwell Mountain Bike Trail Network Stage 1 – Early
Works project. The funding was allocated for sustaining tourism at Australia’s iconic World and National Heritage sites and ensuring regional communities can benefit from increased tourism when COVID-19 related travel restrictions have eased. The Early Works project will create new mountain bike infrastructure in Cardwell such
as a trail head, pump track, bike wash, car parking and signage, which will link to the existing informal trails and position Cardwell as a bikefriendly destination. The Queensland Government will administer the funding and continue to work closely with the Cassowary Coast Regional Council, and the broader Cardwell Mountain
Bike Trail Network Project Control Group to ensure collaboration between the two projects. More information on the project can be found by visiting the project page; https:// bit.ly/3HsVG5h. Alternatively, contact Council on 1300 763 903 or email enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC VIRTUAL LIBRARY
The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is installing a new 100-millimeter diameter water main along Fitzgerald and Bunda Streets in Innisfail. The new water main will replace the existing cast iron main, which was installed in the 1930’s and has severe internal ferric corrosion. Council is well advanced through replacing all unlined cast iron pipes (circa 1930’s) by 2025. Many of the mains in and around the Innisfail CBD have already been replaced. The new mains will improve flow and pressures in the area, particularly fire-fighting flows. The works for Fitzgerald and Bunda Streets commenced at the beginning of February and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete, subject to weather.

Some disruptions to water services will occur as property service lines are reconnected to the new main. Council will minimise the period of any water disruption and liaise with impacted residents and businesses before any temporary disconnection of water occurs. Throughout construction, there will be periods where there is traffic delays and roads reduced to one lane. Traffic control and detours will be in place during these times. There may be some temporary impacts to kerbside parking but Council will endeavour to minimise impacts as much as possible. Any changes to these arrangements will be advised to impacted property owners with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice.

Council acknowledge IN BRIEF community the gloo in igloo What’s coming Recently, Council unanimously resolved on an amended motion to retain the Tully Igloo and engage with the community to develop a masterplan for the Tully Showgrounds area. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said Council had received feedback from the community that the Tully Igloo was well-loved; we have listened and we have actioned. “I fully supported the amendment. It’s the perfect opportunity to develop a masterplan and engage with the community on what the future looks like for Tully Showgrounds. It’s important that we come together and build a more sustainable tomorrow- which includes making the best use of the assets we have,” Cr Nolan said. Councillor Teresa Millwood said she was a strong advocate for the people in the community and she was pleased that she was able to advocate on behalf of her constituents. “I am a born and bred local and have many memories of the Igloo. The Igloo once stood on the carpark directly across from the Council Chamber building. It was then relocated some years later to its current site. The building has been utilised over the years by many groups, from various sports, debutante balls, weddings and other community functions,” Cr Millwood said. “I have seen the ongoing support from the Tully community to keep this iconic building and today’s outcome is a great example of how providing feedback to your Councillors and Council helps shape outcomes.” Resident and stalwart supporter of the Tully Igloo, Ron Hunt
OAM said he was glad to hear about the outcome. “I am glad that common sense prevailed- where else would you get an indoor sports stadium of that magnitude in the wettest place in Australia. I’m terribly pleased it went that way,“ Mr Hunt said. Community will be engaged to provide their feedback as part of the Tully Showgrounds Masterplan as this plan progresses in FY22/23. Council is working to engage with interested parties and the community, and encourages those who wish to express their views to reach out to their local Councillor. Alternatively, you can contact Council on 1300 763 903 or email enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au. Once the project is underway, Council will also provide regular updates via our Facebook page and website.

The Cassowary Coast Community has been left a whole lot cleaner with groups across the region collecting 25 large bags of rubbish and with collective rubbish from the day brought into Waste Transfer Station’s having a total weight of 6,540kg! Johnstone River Community Garden completed their 15th clean up at Innisfail Dalyrmple Park and collected just under 5 kilos of rubbish. A family at Tully Heads said the kids had a great time picking up three bags worth of rubbish full of fishing line, rubbish bags, tins and lots of plastic. Lower Tully State had 65 students involved and Tully State Schools jumped on board and cleaned up their local area and school grounds. Silkwood State School had the juniors and seniors working together to collect 212 pieces of rubbish. Kurrimine Beach had 27 people starting early Sunday morning with over 6 large bags and Cowley Beach collecting 4 bags of rubbish. As well as supporting registered sites with equipment and disposal of rubbish, Cassowary Coast Regional Council stepped it up this year and held two clean-up sites. One at Dave Dunbar Park in Innisfail and the other along the roadsides of South Mission Beach. Together over 10kg of rubbish was collected.
