Cassowary Coast Mayor Mark Nolan said every year he was humbled by the generosity shown by community members and organisations who made donations to support local families and individuals in need across
the region. “This year has been particularly hard for many and to reach a total of $7312.78 is astonishing. “The Community Christmas Appeal is a chance to give to where it’s needed most and to make the festive season just a little better for those in need.” Councillor Nolan said he would like to provide his heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, from purchasing a $2 star to a large donation, it all adds up and every cent raised goes straight back into the community to spread Christmas joy. Melissa Tanti, Family Counsellor, Community Support Centre Innisfail said the funds will be distributed to vulnerable families that we work with who are experiencing challenges in the Cassowary Coast Region. “The funds will be pro-

SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITES Anthony Albanese Mission Beach walkthrough
Over the weekend, Mayor Mark Nolan, CEO Andrew Graffen and Councillor Barry Barnes were joined by leader of the federal opposition Anthony Albanese for a walkthrough of the Village Green in Mission Beach while on his regional North Queensland tour. The walk through discussed the future vision of the central business area in Mission Beach and the positive effects the CBD revitalisation will have on tourism and local business in the Mission Beach and Cassowary Coast area. Mr Albanese was advised on Council’s
upcoming application for funding under Building Better Regions Funding round 6 and was also shown the progress of Stage One of the Mission Beach CBD Revitalisation. Stage One of the revitalisation saw construction of a 56 bay carpark which includes disabled parking bays and bays suitable for larger caravans and RV’s. Stage One has been fully funded by Council and is expected to be completed by the end of January, weather permitting. The CBD Revitalisation project will
bring new life to the precinct and deliver on the aspirations of the business community to reinforce Mission Beach’s reputation as an iconic tourism destination. These much needed works will make this precinct a place to live, work, shop, invest, dine and experience for locals and tourists alike. Burying waste into landfill comes at cost to our environment and economy. Last financial year we buried over 17,000 tonne of waste. At $400/tonne, the cost for dumping waste into landfill came in at around $6.8 million. Organic waste such as food and garden scraps when disposed in landfill enter an anaerobic breakdown process and creates greenhouse gases such as methane and leachate, a waste juice that if leaked out of the landfills can contaminate our soil and surface water. Then there’s those hazardous waste products such as batteries, motor oils, tyres, e-waste and paint that not only contaminate our environment but also pose
a fire danger to staff that drive the rubbish collection trucks and work at landfill sites. Being aware of your wasteprint, the waste you produce and what you do with it, will help protect our environment, economy and the safety of waste staff. So this year, make a commitment to reducing your waste-print by implementing one change to your daily waste routine. Here are some tips on small things you can do that when repeated will make a big impact. 1. Recycle Drink Containers: collect eligible drink containers and take them to the Tully or
Stoters Hill container refund points and get 10c cash-back for each one. 2. Recycle Batteries: separate your batteries and recycle them at Council’s libraries, customer service centre or waste transfer station. 3. Choose Reusable Bottles: make the switch from plastic by choosing a reusable drink container. 4. Compost It: recycle your fruit and vegetables scraps by starting a compost bin or worm-farm system and get $20 cashback from Council’s Composting Rebate Program.
