Paradise Palms divides the community opinion TANYA MURPHY
IAN Parmenter and his wife originally purchased an apartment specifically to enjoy a beautiful view overlooking the Paradise Palms golf course, but they are now optimistic about the plans for its redevelopment. “We’ve lived in the local area for over 20 years, so it was really upsetting for us when we heard about the imminent closure of the golf course, and I became actively involved in the Save Paradise Palms Association,” Mr Parmenter said. “I guess the turning point for me was when I looked around the area and I saw that Chinese developers had bought Double Island, they also bought Charlie’s hotel and restaurant in town, with grandiose plans to redevelop them. “So I figured if the golf
Supporters optimistic about development course was privately owned and wasn’t returning a profit, if PPNQ weren’t to go ahead with their redevelopment, it could’ve been sold to example to a Chinese developer, possibly for an even less desirable development. “Even though I’m really upset that the golf course has closed, if this development does go ahead, my vision is that my grandchildren will come to visit and they will think they have the greatest grandparents in the world when we take them to the waterpark. “Even though myself and a lot of people wish the golf course was still there, this is maybe the best alternative, and not only that, it’s being done by a local developer providing local jobs, as well as a new
primary school which is much needed on the northern beaches, so I think it’s got a lot of plusses. “I guess the other things is – I have seen the plans and I think it’s going to offer something other than the other developments on the northern beaches which are often small blocks and narrow streets. “I, just as much as anyone, would have wanted the golf course stay. But if it couldn’t stay, then this is possibly the next best alternative.” PPNQ Developments managing Director Darren Halpin said he regretted not being able to keep the land as a golf course but the golfing industry was in global decline. “The golf course is not sustainable and has gone broke on
two occasions,” he said. “We couldn’t find a golf course operator to acquire it, and I said I’m not going to sell it to someone else from somewhere else to land develop it – I’ll do it myself as a local, and produce a lovely product. “Property values have always fluctuated in that area, and we are going to give residents certainty going forward. “We have done plenty of community consultation and engaged with the locals, and I’m always available if anyone would like to chat with me. “I’m a local and I have four young kids, we are involved in lots of charities and sporting clubs. I care about this community and its future.”

The Paradise Palms Residents Association (PPRA) is asking the community to donate urgently to help fund its court battle to overturn approvals for the Paradise Palms redevelopment. After a concerted effort of letter drops and advertising they have raised $40,000 but urgently need to reach their target of $100,000 before January 27 to cover expected court costs.
In September the owner of the defunct 15-hectare golf course, PPNQ Developments managing Director Darren Halpin, unveiled a $300 million plan to transform the site into a residential and tourism precinct called “The Palms,” which will include a water park, adventure park, caravan park, shops, restaurants, and bars. An application was also recently lodged at Cairns Regional Council for a new Catholic Primary School to be built at the site and more than 30 per cent of the land will be retained as
open space with walking trails and parks. At their November 11 meeting the Cairns Regional Council gave the development the green light by approving the rezoning of the land from sport and recreational use to residential. Division Nine Councillor Brett Olds, whose constituency includes Paradise Palms, and Division Two Councillor Rob Pyne were the only councillors to vote against the rezoning. On December 18, the PPRA lodged an appeal in the Plan-
ning and Environment Court to overturn the approvals, listing 35 grounds of appeal against the development. “It’s a very expensive process, but we previously had more than 5000 people sign a petition against this development and another 850 or so who went to the trouble of writing their own individual objections and sending them into council, so if each of them were to donate even a small amount, we would have enough,” Save Paradise Palms president Clive Abbott said.

“Justice is easier to achieve if you have very deep pockets, so the deck is stacked against not-for-profit community organisations likes ourselves. “However, we’ve received donations as large as $5000 from some supporters and we believe we will have more than enough funds to fight this all the way to the end and we’re quite confident we can win this.” To donate or for more information, visit www.saveparadisepalms.com.au
AS a member of the Paradise Palms Golf Club, the Keys Apartments overlooking the course seemed like the dream investment for Tony Richards when he purchased a unit there. “We moved here to enjoy the 15 hectares of open space,” he said. “This apartment complex was built just over 10 years ago, specifically for golfers to come and play on the golf course. It has parking spaces for our golf buggies which many residents still own, and there was a special entrance for golfers going straight up to the clubhouse.” He said the town plan at the time gave homebuyers no indication that the space would one day be turned into a water park and tourism precinct. “If you buy a home in an area, you don’t want to end up with something next door to your house, or anything else that’s totally inappropriate, and that’s why it’s zoned. It’s a disgrace that the town plan should even be contemplated to be changed. What’s the point of having a planning act? Clive Abbott, also a former member of the Paradise Palms Golf Club, purchased an apartment at the Keys five years ago. “It was so quiet and such a nice outlook over a green space,” he said. “As a consequence of the announcement of this development, the value of the properties around the golf course precinct have dropped by up to 20 per cent. Why should the general population and ratepayers bear the cost of the developer’s plans? Mr Abbott said Save Paradise Palms didn’t expect the land to be turned back into a golf course, but believed it should remain zoned as recreational land. ““This is 60% of the sport and recreation zoning north of the baron. It meets all the CRC’s criteria that they state are their objectives with the 2050 vision, and the 2015 Cairns Plan. And there is absolutely no reason to change it,” said Mr Abott.

VALE Ross Moller
TRIBUTES have flowed for Cairns real estate icon Ross Moller after his unexpected death last weekend. Mr Moller and his wife Despina had a very successful real estate business at LJ Hooker Cairns Edge Hill, which also involved their daughter Nadine and son Nick. Mr Moller was active with the Central Queensland University, the Cairns Taipans, and other real estate industry organisations and advisory bodies. He was also president of the Cairns Amateurs Committee and had been a committee member for 24 years. Speaking on behalf of Cairns Amateurs Committee, Cairns Amateurs vice president, David Goodman said the committee were saddened and shocked to receive the news of Ross’ death. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Despina, Nadine, Ben, Nick and their family,” he said. “Ross was in the process of restructuring the committee and planning this year’s 2021 Carnival. “In the role of president he showed himself to be an innovative, forward thinking leader who was just at home in working clothes putting the Cannon Park track together as he was
in his dinner suit greeting guests at the annual Amateurs Ball. “Ross will be very much missed not only through Amateurs but also the numerous other community organisations he donated his time to in a voluntary capacity,” Mr Goodman said. Immediate past Cairns Amateurs president, Michael Delaney was also shocked to hear the news. “Ross and I were on the Amateurs committee for over 20 years and we enjoyed working together,” he said. “Ross was a hard worker who was in charge of the preparations at Cannon Park. “He would spend the week before the Amateurs in his daggy clothes setting up the racecourse for everyone to appreciate on the weekend where he would be suited up and all charm. “I was very honoured when he took over as president. Ross has contributed substantially to the Cairns community for a long time, not only with the Amateurs but also the Taipans. He will leave a big gap. My heart goes out to Despina and their family.”

Rain failed to dampen protest POURING rain did not deter more than 150 residents from attending a public meeting in Mission Beach on Wednesday to express concerns about a proposed helicopter base in the heart of the ecotourism town. People are worried that the proposed aviation facility on the Tully-Mission Beach Road will have a negative impact on property prices, tourism, the World Heritage environment and wildlife, including cassowaries, and the peaceful, laidback lifestyle. Peter Rowles, president of Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation (C4), which organised the meeting, told the gathering the lack of clarity around the development application by Victorian-based Kestrel Aviation and the contradictions between it and the planning
report to Cassowary Coast Regional Council were cause for concern. “There is still insufficient information for an informed vote on this deferred application when it is presented at next Thursday’s Council meeting,” Mr Rowles said. Much of the conflicting information concerned whether the base would be a tourism venture using light helicopters to ferry visitors between Cairns and Townsville and the offshore islands or whether, as stated in the planning report, Mission Beach would be a base for heavy-lift helicopters used in firefighting and emergency services. Calls by C4 to Kestrel Aviation to gain clarity on the development proposal had not been returned. “Emergency services and medivac operations are al-

ready catered for by contracted companies with established bases in Cairns and Townsville,” Mr Rowles said. “We are not against new business – we encourage economic growth of the Cassowary Coast region – but the proposed location of a noisy helicopter base will have a negative impact upon existing businesses, residents, tourists and wildlife. “There are aviation facilities available at Tully and Innisfail and either of these sites would be a better option. “Mission Beach is the centre of tourism on the Cassowary Coast so this development has implications for the whole region. “We live in one of the few places in the world where two World Heritage areas (Wet Tropics and Great Barrier

He encouraged everyone to read the development application and planning response and to note inconsistencies, contradictions and omissions, and to email councillors with their concerns. Petitions with around 750 signatures asking the Council to refuse the development application had been presented this week, and representatives of C4 and Mission Beach Cassowaries had made a deputation to the whole Council on Tuesday.

FAMILY REUNITED

TANYA MURPHY A CAIRNS Mum who was separated from her husband and five children for more than 10 months due to the international travel restrictions of COVID-19 has finally welcomed them to Cairns thanks to the generosity of the Cairns community. Rejoice Moyo sobbed as she greeted her husband Rainous and five children, Emmanuel, 15, Precious, 12, Sandiselwe, 10, Prince, 6 and Sean, 3 at Cairns airport on Wednesday morning. “I am so relieved, I didn’t realise how much emotion I was holding back all the time,” said Ms Moyo as she fought back tears. “I’ve been trying to stay normal… but there’s just so much going on inside me and it’s actually a huge relief to finally have this day come, to be with the family, to see them, to touch them, to see my little boy who’s just been asking about his mother all the time. So this is really amazing, I am so, so happy, I’m beyond words.” Ms Moyo moved to Australia from Zimbabwe in March last year after being hired and sponsored as a physiotherapist by Pro Active Physiotherapy in Whitfield, with her family booked to follow her at the end of
the school term. Their dream was crushed when COVID-19 lockdowns hit – and when flights finally became available again, the prices had skyrocketed beyond affordability, not to mention the cost of quarantine. Time was running out as the family were stuck in Namibia, with their Namibian visa set to expire at the end of December. The despairing Ms Moyo started a GoFundMe campaign in early December to try to cover the travel costs for her family, but the target of $25,000 seemed nearly impossible. In the nick of time on December 23 the target was reached, thanks to $8570 raised via GoFundMe, and a single donation of $20,000 from an anonymous woman who said she couldn’t stand to see a mother separated from her children. Since then, things happened in a blur as Ms Moyo’s family flew out of Namibia on Christmas Day, and after an arduous journey via South Africa and Singapore, arrived in Adelaide where they quarantined for two weeks before taking their flight to Cairns. Ms Moyo said they were incredibly grateful to the generosity of the Cairns community.
“2020 has been a very difficult year, and everybody else was in a difficult situation and to have people actually give of themselves like that, that was very selfless and very generous. It’s really quite overwhelming,” she said. “There are many people in the same situation as us, with someone still stuck outside, and they can’t get here, so we count ourselves really lucky. And I’m very grateful to everyone who contributed in any form whether financially or in kind. All of it is very greatly appreciated.” Ms Moyo said she had worked hard for years pursuing her dream to obtain a skilled migrant visa and job in Australia, to create a better life for her children, and hoped to “pay forward” the community’s generosity in future. “I would like to go around and speak to young people and tell them if you have a dream and believe in it and work towards it, there will always be someone to support you. And things may be tough in life but if we really be focused and persevere, our dreams come true. “It’s all dependent on us, it’s only you as a person that can determine your destiny.”

The full cast for the new movie “Lindy Lou” which begins filming in Mareeba this week IT will be a case of lights, camera and action in Mareeba this Friday when a group of locals start filming a new dark comedy drama film. The movie has gotten off the ground thanks to a grant of $10,000 by the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) and filming is due to start on January 15. The film will be shot locally in Mareeba and Cairns using local talent and local crew members. The short film Lindy Lou has been written by Mareeba Local Lisa Bertoldo who will also star and produce the movie.
Lisa said the dark comedy drama will have a distinctive Far North Queensland flavour encompassing rural landscapes to social issues amongst the community. “The 35 minute short film and TV pilot will be based in and around Mareeba focusing on a local family and it will be very Far North Queensland based.” Lisa said. “It has a very dry sense of humour.” Lisa said the movie takes place after a tragedy and slowly over time you find out what the tragedy is and you also find out about Lindy and her family.
“Most of the cast is sorted and all the cast and crew are Cairns and Mareeba based,” she said. “Now we are just rehearsing and getting costumes and props underway. “We have a very talented local cast and crew.” Along with Lisa Bertoldo other local actors will include Oliver Vergari, Anthony Ring, Andy Gamble, Peta Cooke, Peter Merril, Daryl Heath, Dell Beckham and Drew Brauer . Filming is due to start this Friday in Mareeba, for more information go to www. lisabertoldo.com

HAPPY 2021 Tropicairnians, Let’s start this hopefully fantastic year on a colourful note. Do we subject society to bright and stimulating colours or do we just trudge through the year like we did in bleak agonizingly painful 2020? When you walk around the city, shopping centres and the big green box you will no doubt come across people with bright colourful dyed hair and / or fantastic skin art work. Now I have seen some absolutely beautiful skin art on some healthy young people, but when I see some tattoos (like mine) that can or have aged badly. The owners have not considered ageing as a factor when undergoing this process. We all will get older and the work will fade or wrinkle out I feel sad. But let us look on a more fun topic, colouring hair or beards, I love walking around watching the approaching of sometimes neon dyed coloured hair of some amazing happy people that will always put a smile on my face. Now I do love this fantastic happy and brilliant step in enlightment but geez it is

expensive and permanent for up to 2 months. But for me I am more into beard painting and all I need is to pick one of my 112 Hawaiian shirts and then sort out what face paint colours and design will match. The best part about beard painting is that at the end of the day is all you need to do is have a shower and paint is gone. Now I can spend up to 1 hour in front of a mirror working the paint onto the beard to match the shirt which my ex-girlfriend says is more than she does, and with the
selection of one of my 50+ hats to match the theme always brings smiles on faces. Not everyone likes this happy approach to life but there again some strange (apparently) humans who like brussel sprouts, bloody weirdos that will probably vote for pole-vaulting to be introduced into the Winter Olympics. Please try to look on life like my old late great Nana, who use to say that if you can put a smile on 3 people’s faces a day then your heart is good. Wayne.

Threatened species breeding program success
Glider Joey brings joy to CaPTA
The joey is the only Mahogany Glider joey to be successfully born in captivity in the last two years in Australia. As well as being an adorable addition to the Wildlife Habitat family, the female joey also signifies the park’s impressive successes in conserving one of Australia’s most threatened mammals. Wildlife Habitat is proud to be part of a small captive breeding program, alongside several other Zoo and Aquarium Association accredited wildlife institutions, which aim to sustain a healthy, genetically diverse captive population of Mahogany Glider. The female joey was born in early November to resident Mahogany Glider Acacia, who was born at Wildlife Habitat 4 years ago and was the last successful
joey born via the breeding program. The Mahogany Glider (Petaurus gracilis) is Australia’s only endangered marsupial species and can be found in a tiny fragment of habitat between Townsville and Cardwell. Incredibly, in 1989, this species “returned from extinction”, with no sighted species on record for over a century! Prior to 1989, the last record of a Mahogany Glider was in 1983. The Mahogany Glider is listed as endangered and it is estimated that there are only 1500 remaining in the wild. Wildlife Manager Rabecca Lynch said it was vital to maintain a healthy captive population of this fragile and endangered species. “Breeding endangered species in captive environments is extremely important to maintain viable genetics, as the numbers of these animals have diminished to such a degree that they may disappear forever without intervention,” she said.
“If we can breed these species successfully, there then lies hope that at some time in the future they may be able to be released back out into the wild and our conservation efforts can have maximum impact.” The mum and baby are housed in the parks’ new Nocturnal Habitat, which uses a reverse cycle lighting facility to mimic night and day, marking what may be the first time in captive wildlife history that this species has been bred in this type of facility. The Wildlife Habitat’s reverse cycle facility has also seen success in breeding the Northern Bettong, another endangered species that is endemic to the Far North Queensland region, with 4 joeys born in the past twelve months. “Having successfully bred two endangered species in the last twelve months, Wildlife
“
Habitat continues to cement its status as one of Australia’s leading conservation wildlife sanctuaries,” Ms Lynch said.

We must value our natural environment
Reflecting the community’s voice ONE of the key pillars supporting our newspaper is the strong belief we should reflect the voices of the community. It’s fair to say that no one voice speaks for the masses, so we believe it’s essential to have diversity of voice and opinion within the pages of the Cairns Local News. As editor I am cognisant that my voice and opinion cannot represent the full community of readers. To ensure we always remain relevant and reflective of our community we will turn this editorial column over to our readers on a regular basis. This will be your opportunity to present a range of opinions and voices, a chance to ‘soap-box’ if necessary and raise issues of importance to our readers. Obviously this cannot be a free-for-all with unfettered licence. Submissions will need to ensure they are factual, that they conform to the publishing standards of the Press Council. Submissions cannot vilify or defame. The ideal length is 250 to 300 words and submitting an article does not guarantee publication. Cairns Local News reserves the right to edit the submission for the purpose of accuracy and presentation. Submissions need to be emailed as a word document, not pdf format to Editor@CairnsLocalNews.com. au with Editorial Submission in the subject field. Please include with the submission your full name, contact details and address. Submission will need to be verified prior to publication. All submissions need to be original and exclusive to Cairns Local News, and please include a one-sentence author ID at the bottom of your submission. Your opinion piece could be a personal or explanatory essay, commentary on news events, reflections on cultural trends and more are all welcome. READER SUBMISSION MY first visit to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef was as an ordinary seaman on HMAS Gascoyne in 1964. Gascoyne was tasked to survey the reef for an inner passage to allow ships to navigate through the reef closer to the mainland. I fell in love with Cairns and was amazed by the beautiful and then pristine reef. I visited Cairns many times as a tourist when I retired in 2002 my wife and I settled in Cairns. I have been able to take my grand-children to snorkel the reef so they could experience some of the wonders I had seen as a young sailor. In recent years, the Reef has suffered severe mass coral bleaching. Over 2016
and 2017, the Reef suffered back-to-back bleaching, leaving half of the shallow water corals dead. Results from extensive aerial and underwater surveys showed that 29% of corals died from the 2016 event alone – with most perishing in the northern section, where waters are warmest. I became very concerned about the reef and the effects of climate change on Cairns and the future I was passing on to my great grand-children. I completed a Climate Change course online with JCU and was encouraged to start blogging, which I have been doing for about ten years now. As a result of the research I have been doing for my blog I have become even more concerned about the threat climate change is to Cairns
and the Great Barrier Reef. I have pleaded with politicians to listen to the scientists and work to rapidly reduce our carbon emissions. If the COVID pandemic has taught us anything, it is to listen to the scientists and act quickly on their advice. Thousands of lives have been saved in Australia because of good governance during the COVID crisis. If we want to protect Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef, and pass a liveable future to our children we must also listen to the scientists and act quickly on climate change. As Kevin Rudd said “Climate Change is our greatest moral challenge.” The fossil fuel industry has for decades funded climate deniers and given donations to political parties that support them. In Europe there is a strong movement to make
Ecocide a crime against humanity. Ecocide – which literally means “killing the environment” – is an idea that seems a highly radical and, campaigners claim, a reasonable one. The theory is that no one should go unpunished for destroying the natural world. Campaigners believe the crime should come under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which can currently prosecute just four crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression. It’s time we took the climate deniers and those that support them to court. Our future and the future of generations to come depend on what we do today. John Pratt Mooroobool

TANYA MURPHY THE Cairns tourism industry suffered another major blow when Brisbane announced its lockdown last weekend, resulting in a 75 per cent drop in airport arrivals. The three-day lockdown ended on Monday but the state governments in WA, SA and Victoria have decided to keep their borders closed to Queensland, resulting in cancellations from those states as well as Brisbane. Mary Jovic-Peu and her family were disappointed when they arrived in Cairns and found out they had to spend the first three days of their holiday in a hotel room. “We missed the days we preferred to go to Green Island, Fitzroy Island and the Reef, so we’ve had to jam pack into the last couple of days our Green Island and Reef, but we’ve missed out on Fitzroy this time.” Sandy Thompson and Daryl Tuesley from the Gold Coast also said they had to spend three days in self-isolation and complete a COVID-19 test after flying to Cairns.
“We only found out when we got to Cairns. We’ve extended our holiday for four days, so we can still do everything we wanted to do, but it has cost us more money,” said Mr Tuesley. Sunlover Reef Cruises general manager Greg Erwin said the Brisbane lockdown had caused a number of booking cancellations, and supported widespread calls for JobKeeper to be extended for Far North Queensland businesses. “We had a number of cancellations from people because of the lockdown in Brisbane, but it also dents everyone’s confidence going forward. People are less confident with travelling because they’re worried about he next breakdown or next lockdown will be,” he said. “The high season of Christmas holiday volume really starts to taper off from this week, which really highlights how important it is for JobKeeper to be extended for Far North businesses. “While there are government-enforced restrictions, international border closures,
Susa Afu, Seta JovicPeu, Mary Jovic-Peu and Liliena Jovic Peu from Brisbane arrived in Cairns to find out they had to spend three days in selfisolation and things that prevent us doing business as usual, we require a level of assistance, and JobKeeper has been a really good model. “We’d like to see that continue, because unlike some other areas in Australia who have been able to recover, we’re absolutely seeing large decreases on our usual trading period.
“It’ll be very difficult for us to get through that without some assistance, whether that’s in the form of JobKeeper or some other program. But it’s certainly going to be very much needed for Cairns.” Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen asked WA and Victoria to lift the restrictions.
“Port Douglas lost about 20 per cent of bookings, and one leading Cairns hotel, Crystalbrook, had 250 cancellations on Friday with the majority from Queenslanders. Many were for bookings in late January and February rather than the weekend of the lockdown, so there is definitely a loss of confidence.
“I encourage people to keep their bookings, secure in the knowledge that they can get a credit or refund. “The uncertainty means it is important for JobKeeper to be extended for the tourism and hospitality industry to reduce the financial impact on affected businesses and ensure we do not lose staff.”

Make Lamb Not Walls
WE know it’s coming up to Australia Day when the Meat and Livestock Australia releases their annual Australia Day Lamb ad. This year it’s a corker. COVID inspired this ad features a very tongue-incheek review of border closures and divisions between the states. Scotty from Marketing features in the last few seconds of the 2 and a half minute video. We celebrate not the ‘United States of Australia’ but Australia on Australia Day. This annual creative marketing video promoting Aussie Lamb encourages us to
‘Make Lamb, Nor Walls’. “As a brand that celebrates unity and the power of coming together, this year in the ad, we wanted to remind Australians that we are always stronger together,” MLA domestic market manager Graeme Yardy said. “Our hope for 2021 will be that the virtual get togethers of the last 12 months, will be replaced with an Aussie Lamb barbie, the most unifying, and delicious meal of all.” “We know Lamb is the meal that Australians love to come together over and share – and the campaign is focused on reminding con-

sumers to enjoy high quality lamb with family and friends this summer.” As always this campaign will not dampen the enthusiasm for Australia Day, if anything it will heighten and bring an amount of levity to the day. In Cairns the Cairns Regional Council’s celebrations will focus on Reflect, respect, Celebrate. Celebrating the day is three locations, a city based event, a Northern Beaches celebrations and a community event in the southern suburbs. The city will gather for a traditional fun Pool Par-
ty at Tobruk Memorial Pool along with a sausage sizzle, games, activities and a host of great pool fun activities. Northern Beaches residents can head to Holloways Beach for a fantastic Beach Party, sausage sizzle, markets and live entertainment. South of Cairns, Gordonvale will host the Party in the Park with stalls, sausage sizzle and Australian themed activities. For full activity details visit Councils website.

JASON Robert Brown’s award-winning musical, The Last Five Years, is an emotionally powerful and intimate show about two New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. This modern musical’s unconventional structure unfold as Cathy (an actress) tells her story in reverse, from the end of their turbulent relationship, whilst Jamie (a novelist) tells his story chronologically from the spark of their initial meeting. The characters meet only once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.

Sample all the flavours of Abruzzo TANYA MURPHY Abbruzzo is a region on the Adriatic Sea in Southern Italy famed for its beautiful seaside fishing villages, mountain ranges, lakes, and its cuisine. Alessandra Giannascoli’s family has been in this region for generations and some of her earliest memories involve helping her parents and grandparents to cook traditional food in their restaurant. It is this background that inspired Ms Giannascoli and partner Wendy Lombardo to open their new restaurant, L’Abruzzese (meaning ‘from Abbruzzo’) in Cairns on Thursday November 26. This Italian dining experience is unique in that all the dishes are offered in small
portions, similar to ‘tapas’, enabling diners to sample and share a wide range of hand-made pastas, quality local seafood, meats and vegetables. Full meal-size portions are also available. I visited this restaurant with a group of friends, arriving during the ‘Aperitivo’ hour from 5 to 6pm. During this time, if you purchase a drink from the fully stocked bar you receive a complimentary plate of nibbles from the friendly and professional staff. The ‘aperitivo’ is an Italian tradition of having a pre-meal drink, and we took full advantage of the wine and cocktail menu. After this we each ordered three small dishes and

passed them around to share, which was a mouth-watering journey through the exquisite flavours of Abruzzo. My seafood-loving friends relished the Tortelloni Alla Cernia (tortelloni filled with coral trout in ragu sauce), gamberi alla pina (garlic prawns in brandy sauce), and calamari ripieni (calamari tubes stuffed with bread, garlic, tomato and herbs). My vegetarian friends were delighted with the Pizzette (mini-pizzas), Fettucine Funghi Porcini (homemade fettucine with Italian forest mushrooms, truffle and parmesan cheese) and
parmigiana di melanzane (crumbed eggplant oven baked with mozzarella cheese, Italian red sauce and parmesan cheese). Highlights of the meat selection were the Involtini di Vitello (veal schnitzel filled with three cheeses and slow cooked in red sauce) and Pollo All’abruzzese (pan fried chicken with capsicum, cherry tomato and onion). We finished off by sharing tarts with ricotta cheese and chocolate, and tiramisu. These were just a few of the options available on the extensive menu and we will definitely be returning to try
Abruzzo is a region in Italy, inside our menu you will indulge in tasting the finest of ingredients used to create traditional cuisines passed down through generations in my family, from my region. Our idea is for you to try a variety of small portions of handmade pastas, quality local seafood, meats, and vegetables, all with enriched flavours. These elements provide the perfect ingredients to create our recipes from Italy’s finest cuisine, prepared for you with time and love Enjoy your tour through the Abruzzo region tasting the absolute best!!!

Aussie Day Pool Parties ON Australia Day 2021, Cassowary Coast Regional Council will be delivering events across the region to encourage the community to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate because we’re all part of the story. The day’s festivities will commence with the Cassowary Coast Australia Day awards, which includes awarding the Citizen of the Year Award. The event will also welcome our new Australian Citizens with a Citizenship Ceremony. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said he was proud to have the opportunity to recognise our local heroes on Australia Day. “In the past year our nation has faced fire, flood, drought and the coronavirus pandemic. It has been a tough year for us all and we have had some inspirational community members who have stepped up to contribute to our great region and the day is the perfect time to pause and give our thanks. “It’s also a proud moment for me when we welcome new Aussies into the fold. Often this ceremony is the end
of a journey that has taken years. “Council has partnered with local community groups to throw Australia Day pool parties. The pool parties will be held at Innisfail, Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell. The pools will offer free entry, entertainment and prize giveaways. “Community and mateship is the foundation on which this country was built, and I encourage all Cassowary Coast residents to come together to celebrate and reflect on the resilience of our community over the last year and the spirit of helping, giving and supporting that defines us as Australians,” Councillor Nolan said. Due to covid restrictions, admission to the Australia Day award and citizenship
ceremony are strictly ticketed. Tickets are free and interested guests will need to register before the event at www.trybooking.com. Please note that no tickets will be available at the door. The Australia Day Pool Parties will be held at: Innisfail Memorial Baths 10am to 2pm. Mission Beach Aquatic Centre - 10am to 4pm. Tully Pool Facility - 10am to 2pm. Cardwell Pool Facility - 10am to 4pm. (Normal entry conditions and parent/child ratios apply. A covid-safe plan will be in place for the events). SHUGGIUE BAIN

Douglas Stuart
IT is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest. Shuggie is different. Fastidious and fussy, he shares his mother’s sense of snobbish propriety. The miners’ children pick on him and adults condemn him as no’ right. But Shuggie believes that if he tries his hardest, he can be normal like the other boys and help his mother escape this hopeless place. Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain lays bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride. A counterpart to the privileged Thatcher-era London of Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line of Beauty, it also recalls the work of Édouard Louis, Frank McCourt, and Hanya Yanagihara, it is a blistering debut by a brilliant novelist with a powerful and important story to tell.
THE TRAITOR Wolf Girl 4 Anh Do A wildly exciting adventure series from bestselling author Anh Do. Wolf Girl and her trusty dogs are back for another hackle-raising adventure. On the run from sinister forces, Gwen rushes head-long into danger. With giant snakes, komodo dragons and a whole new wolf pack to contend with, Wolf Girl will need all her cunning... and all her friends.

TONY ROBINSON’S HIDDEN BRITAIN BY DRONE
SBS SAT Jan 16. 4.30pm “I have a cunning plan, Captain Blackadder....” a quote made famous by Tony Robinson in a previous life. Today Robinson makes high quality and very entertaining and informative documentaries for television. This series is built about unearthing many of the interesting and very quirky histories of Britain, including a liberal dose of drone footage to take the cameras and views behind the scenes and give us a better view of the story. In this week’s episode, a roasting summer has uncovered huge finds and hidden secrets from the parched landscape. Tony Robinson meets the archaeologists and drone pilots recording this transient phenomenon.
WORLD’S BIGGEST NUREMBERG
MURDER
TRIAL:
SBS Sun Jan 17. 7.30pm 75 years ago, the biggest murder trial in history began in Nuremberg, Germany. 21 Nazi leaders appeared in court charged with crimes that caused the deaths of millions of innocent people during World War II. This bold new feature-length documentary recounts the dramatic story of the Nuremberg Trials. The film has been pieced together using over a thousand archive clips, including recently digitized film footage from the courtroom. With no voice-overs or interviews, this film offers an immersive and impactful record of the most important trial in history - an event that not only represented the birth of human rights, and shaped international law forever, but serves as a stark reminder of the brutal consequences of oppression, division and hate.

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: What’s going on? You might find yourself confused by a turn of events on Monday or Tuesday, but don’t fight against the flow. Let things unfold and adapt as necessary. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, expect to inspire. You’re at your confident, charismatic best right now and others will be moved by your brilliance. From Thursday afternoon through Saturday, you need to step back and reassess your situation -- even if that means deciding to put yourself first. .
GEMINI: It’s a strange spot to find yourself in, but you’ll have a hard time getting your ideas across as the week begins. From Monday through Tuesday morning, you’ll need to work extra hard to eliminate confusion and clarify everyone’s agenda. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning, expect to be influenced by some persuasive (and possibly downright crazy) ideas. Enjoy the intellectual exercise and don’t back down from any good arguments.
PISCES: Want to lead the way? Or maybe you should just want to connect a group with some much-needed leadership. In any case, you’ll find your managerial skills in demand as the week begins. By Tuesday afternoon and on through Thursday, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed by a flood of new ideas. (See, daydreaming really can be productive!)
CANCER: If you’re looking to avoid misunderstandings and mishaps, lay low as the week begins. From Monday on through Tuesday morning, you’ll have a hard time making yourself clear to others. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon, you’ll have much better luck communicating -- especially if you can appeal to people’s heads rather than their hearts.
ARIES: Who can possibly keep up with you? Nobody, apparently -- or at least not as this week begins. On Monday and on into Tuesday morning, you’ll blow away the competition and others will look on admiringly. On the rest of Tuesday and on through Thursday morning, your ambitions will find even broader support. Now is a great time for forming new alliances and building up big, bold plans.
LEO: You know what you want as the week begins, so go ahead and go after it! On Monday and on through Tuesday morning, you should find plenty of opportunities to achieve your goals (and maybe even show off in the process). Expect others to admire your accomplishments, but going into Tuesday afternoon and through Thursday, try to ease back on your own ego.
TAURUS: As the week begins, you’ll find yourself feeling good and grounded. Your patient, open-minded attitude is paying off and Monday (and Tuesday morning, too) should go just as planned. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning, try to be flexible -- others might try to get a rise out of you, so don’t give them the satisfaction. (Unless, of course, butting heads sounds appealing.) From Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning, look for chances to share common goals with friends and any other like-minded cohorts.
VIRGO: You’ll find yourself feeling unusually outgoing and optimistic as the week begins -- and you can expect others to notice! From Monday through Tuesday afternoon, don’t be surprised to find opportunities for creative (and potentially romantic!) ideas and plans. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon, you’ll achieve an organizational coup. You might not have thought that you could whip your world into shape any better, but there’s always something new to learn.
LIBRA: Break past old limits as the week begins. On Monday (and on through Tuesday morning), you might find yourself feeling overly sentimental, but just shuck that maudlin mood and embrace your own inner optimism. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, set out to try new things -- and meet new people. The time is right for romantic and intellectual breakthroughs. From Thursday afternoon through Saturday, expect your routine to get disrupted. Things won’t go as planned -- but that could be a good thing, provided you can stay flexible. SCORPIO: You’re feeling extraordinarily ambitious as the week begins. From Monday through Tuesday afternoon, your willpower and assertiveness will shift into overdrive and it’s a good time for making commitments and signing on the dotted line. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon, your work with others could become a lot less harmonious, especially if you’re not open to others’ ideas. From Thursday afternoon through Saturday, expect your hidden talents to come into play (whatever those might be). SAGITTARIUS: The week starts with a big shift for you. You’re not usually fretting over how to make ends meet, but pesky financial details could come to the forefront on Monday (and on into Tuesday afternoon). Pinch pennies, but do it creatively. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, discover a whole new world of people -- who just happen to have a whole new world of ideas for you. From Thursday afternoon through Saturday, you might have trouble getting focused, but try to enjoy the momentary flightiness. CAPRICORN: As the week begins, you’re full of energy and ambition. On Monday and on into Tuesday morning, you can expect to get a lot done -- and to get a lot of praise in the process. From Tuesday afternoon through Thursday, you need to be wary of new plans and untested schemes (and don’t hesitate to share your guidance with others). From Thursday afternoon through Saturday, your creativity should blossom. Find unexpected solutions and dream up daring ideas.

Indigenous Basketball Competition Launched THIS week, Indigenous Basketball Australia (IBA) announced details of their first basketball competition, Indigenous Community Basketball League (ICBL) that aims to provide a pathway for participation and success for the next generation of Aboriginal youths and Torres Strait Islander youths. Under the powerful tagline ‘Own Your Story’, the competition will target under 14 year olds and will run across eight locations in Australia, inclusive of the Torres Strait Islands with the first round scheduled to tip off on Sunday, February 7, 2021. Founded by NBA Champion, three-time Olympian and proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian Patty Mills, the programs delivered by the IBA are centred by the core principles of culture, education, health, safety and wellbeing. The community basketball competitions, national tournaments and development camps facilitated by the IBA will allow young Indigenous people to preserve cultural practices, strengthen and promote their individual identity while also leading a healthy lifestyle. Collectively, this is a national first in Australian sport. ICBL is the first competition aimed at discovering, en-
gaging, supporting and empowering Aboriginal youths and Torres Strait Islander youths in a safe and positive environment. “To continue my efforts as a leader for my people and to follow my family’s legacy of providing legitimate opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through my sport of basketball is the true outcome of my personal success and accomplishments.” says Patty Mills. “What we will do with the IBA programs and competitions has never been done before and is the first-of-itskind in this country’s sporting environment. It’s game changing and we’re creating history. He adds, “As a starting point, we will begin with the age group of under 14. The early adolescence years are crucial for a child’s cognitive, emotional and social development - our complementary programs throughout the competitions of IBA will support these kids and their communities in embracing their culture and unlocking ones full potential in an environment that is safe and free from any discrimination. Harnessing the spirit of the IBA’s commitment to pathway development, each player competing in the ICBL
will automatically be in the running for selection to represent their region, and proudly sport their state colours at the National Indigenous Basketball Tournament on Queensland’s Gold Coast in April 2021. Unique to this program are the ‘Inspirational and Motivational Sessions’ that will complement the weekly competitions. Role models and motivational speakers will share their personal stories of setting and achieving goals and will also be offering their support to the par-
ticipants on their journey to success. “As a proud Torres Strait Islander, I am incredibly supportive of Indigenous Basketball Australia and the real opportunity it would bring to my people - both on and off the court.” adds Nathan Jawai, Forward and Centre of the Cairns Taipans. “The IBA model will see young players supported in a positive and safe environment to fulfil their dreams; equipping them with invaluable tools, skills and experience to flourish and succeed.
I strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths to sign up today to participate in the Indigenous Community Basketball League and the innovative IBA programs. Aboriginal youths and Torres Strait Islander youths who are under 14 years old in the 8 regions identified are encouraged to register for the ICBL by visiting the official IBA website where they will find the contact details of their Regional Coordinator.
