Mike Morris is among homeowners seeking government action after finding out his apartment may soon be uninsurable.

Apartment insurance nightmare TANYA MURPHY

When Mike Morris purchased an apartment at the Lakes resort in Cairns, he looked forward to living out his retirement in peace, but this dream is quickly becoming a nightmare as he and other residents discover their properties may soon be uninsurable. Two buildings at The Lakes resort in Cairns were left without insurance for three months this year, and ended up having to under-insure their properties by more than $1 million each, after no other options could be found. They had to wait weeks to acquire a special dispensation from the Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management to insure their buildings for less than their value. This comes as new analysis from Climate Risk has revealed more than 445,000 addresses in Australia where insurance is expected to become unaffordable or unavailable within 30 years. After analysing 500 locations around Australia, Climate Risk analyst Karl Mellon said Cairns properties were in the top 10% of properties at risk of becoming uninsurable, due to their low lying coastal loca-

tion, and the increasing risk of floods, coastal inundations and category four and five cyclones.

seas and take out parametric cyclone cover, which would have cost us $400,000, and in a building with only 22 units that’s simply not affordable for the owners.

“We were lucky nothing happened during the three months while we were searching for insurance, but if the

“We worked really hard to find options for our clients this year, and managed to get insurance for all of them, but some of them had to get insurance from London and are paying three or four times what they were paying last year,” she said.

“Some of the owners are pensioners and they can’t afford it, nor can they sell a property that is uninsured, so they will face homelessness and financial ruin.”

Cairns Regional Council voted in their August ordinary meeting to write to the Queensland government requesting them to investigate a state-sponsored insurance scheme to address the issue.

Peter Bunker, Body Corporate Chairman for one of the affected buildings at the Lakes, said their previous insurer Resilium informed them this year that they were withdrawing

from the market for all strata buildings worth more than $5 million with more than 10 units north of Mackay affected.

same happens next year it’ll only takes a burst pipe or a kitchen fire to leave us with a huge bill and no cover.

After contacting every other insurer and getting the same response, they ended up having to insure their building, worth $6.2 million, for just $5 million with Sure Insurance, but at double the premium.

“Some of the owners are pensioners and they can’t afford it, nor can they sell a property that is uninsured, so they will face homelessness and financial ruin.

“Three years ago it was $17,000, last year it was $22,000 and now it’s gone up to more than $42,000 for the building, and it could easily double again next year, if they renew it at all,” said Mr Bunker. “The only other option was to get insurance from over-

“This is clearly a market failure and we would like to see the government stepping in and offering assistance.” Corp Sure’s Amanda Bryant, insurance broker for a large number of strata in Far North Queensland, said the Lakes was far from being alone, as all similar buildings north of Rockhampton were

Mr Bunker said he would support a levy on the fossil fuel industry to help cover costs for homeowners to upgrade their buildings to be better prepared and more insurable in the face of worsening weather extremes.

COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR BRUNO’S RETURN NICOLE GIBSON

CAIRNS social media lit up late last month when Shannon Brianese got the news every missing pet owner prays for. Her long-lost Shar Pei cross Bruno had been found after getting lost on a run behind Edmonton quarry in early August. Ms Brianese, 23, was desperate to get her best mate back and turned to local Facebook community, Cairns Animals Lost, Found and Reunite.

“The burning of coal and fossil fuels is causing sea levels to rise and cyclone severity to increase, so it seems reasonable that the people who profit from those industries should give a small amount of those profits to help people adapt their properties,” he said.

“He’d been gone for a month and I started to worry I might never see him again” Ms Brianese said. “But the group never gave up searching.”

“But what we need right now is an immediate solution to help make insurance affordable.”

They mounted a twomonth long search which saw Bruno’s story shared more than 100 times.

The group is Cairns largest lost animal community with more than 22000 members.

“There were sightings of him from Bentley Park to the Gordonvale backroads,” said Ms Brianese. The group was started in 2011 by Briony Pratt after finding a number of missing dogs in her neighbourhood. Ms Pratt credits the group’s success to its members who are dedicated animal lovers willing to give up their time to help bring someone else’s pet home safely. “It can be the middle of the night and while you’re sleeping someone will be out there looking for your lost animal.” she said. “It’s amazing.” Ms Pratt said the first thing to do when your pet goes missing is post to the group then check the vets and pound but above all make sure your pet is microchipped. Bruno was finally found five minutes from home, skinny and with scar on his back left leg to remind him never to go missing again.

cides with the end of mental health week in Queensland.

A charity that runs free BBQ’s across in Australia in the hope of getting men to talk about their mental challenges is coming to Cairns.

The idea came to founder Terry Cornick when he shared some of his mental challenges with his mates in the pub and they mentioned that they had their own issues.

Mr. Perfect is ‘Mental Health’s Mate’, a grassroots “pre-crisis” charity that creates community and connection by bringing men together at BBQs in local parks across Australia, to reduce isolation and encourage better mental health. The very first Mr. Perfect BBQ in Cairns is happening Sunday October 18 on the Esplanade and coin-

“In my day job doctors were telling me they had two options, give me medication or a generic leaflet,” Terry said “My family GP only gave me two options, medication and a psychiatrist. “I read a BeyondBlue report around the same time

about men’s ‘connectedness’ and how as post-30 years old we generally lose touch with friends and isolation can develop.” “Writing was my therapy, so I started writing a book, then a blog and that then morphed into the community it is today.” The first ever official Mr. Perfect meetup was January 2016 in Sydney and since then it has spread across Australia as a way for men to meet and chat in the most informal but Australian setting, a community BBQ. The name Mr. Perfect

came from a friend telling Terry that his life was perfect, when Terry was anything but perfect. “Men need soft entry points when dealing with their mental health,” Terry said. “We need to change this engrained culture of us hitting crisis before we seek help or are forced to, because by then we are given the hard entry points. Terry said that Mr. Perfect is a space for men to go and escape some of the chaos in their head and to meet some new people for a couple of hours in the sun each month.

“If this sparks a positive change in them or creates friendships or hope or helps stop an issue before it builds, fantastic. “Although we are completely inclusive, it is of course men-focussed so we suspect men of any age will get more value from it.” The very first Mr Perfect Cairns BBQ is happening Sunday October 18 from 10.30am to 12.30 pm on The Esplanade opposite the hospital. The BBQ is free and is open to all men. For more information go to www.mrperfect.org.au

Fred’s Feel-Good Farm

PETER MCCULLAGH

AT a time when the world needs to smile more, one regional town is giving the world over 45,000 reasons to break out their toothy grins and feel good. Fred James, a very proud and vocal resident of Innisfail has just the right thing to change the way we view life at the moment. Looking for a way to promote the town Fred loves so much, and also a way to bring a genuine sense of joy to the masses, Fred came up with the “G’day from Oz” sunflower project. Working with great immediate neighbours, 10 acres of land was ploughed and 45,000 sunflower plants were seeded.

FR0M PAGE 1

Spelling out in giant letters, ‘G’day from Oz’ plus a giant smiley face, the sunflower project has started blooming.

Fred has opened his property to visitors wishing to grab that unforgettable social media pic, or wanting to visit and be infused with the positive energy that abounds in the fields. “I cannot get over the reaction to this. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought this would take off like it has. “All I wanted was an opportunity for people to feel better about themselves and what’s happening around them. “This is going global and Innisfail is putting a smile of the faces of millions. “When you come to see the sunflowers, come for day or stay overnight in Innisfail. There’s so much to see and do. “It’s amazing just what a difference a smiley face and a positive message to the world can make today.” When asked why sunflowers? “The sunflower is colourful and uplifting, this is

designed to lift the spirits of the community and shine the spotlight on Innisfail.” Fred’s ‘Feel-good Farm’ will be accepting visitors for next 7 days, whilst the sunflowers are in bloom. Visitors can walk in the sunflower fields to grab that memorable picture, or walk to the neighbouring hill that provides an amazing vista of the field. Fred opened the farm last Sunday, with over 300 vehicles and 1000 visitors, it seems this project is very much in demand. Fred is planning other projects, all similar in nature and designed to create a positive and uplifting feeling within the town he so loves. To get there, turn off Bruce Highway onto Palmerston Highway. Drive for 100 metres and Shaw Road is first to the right. Travel down Shaw Road for 125 metres and turn left into 6 Shaw Road.

PRIDE Festival kicks off

A NATIONAL conference which champions equality in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) community is expected to draw hundreds of interstate visitors to the Far North in January 2022.

Rhianna Mation, Division 5 Councillor Amy Eden, Dealia Cards, Ben Dawson from Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, and North Queensland Health Promotion Officer for Queensland Council for LGBTI Health Leonoardo da Inci. CAIRNS Pride Festival starts on Friday, with a COVID-safe Cairns Pride Festival Opening Night and Art Exhibition Launch Event, live streamed on the Tanks Facebook page from 6pm. In 2020, the three-week Festival will feature a range of events independently designed and run by Cairns LGBTI Sistergirl and Brotherboy community leaders and groups. Details for the events can be found by searching for the Cairns Pride Festival on social media. Division 5 Councillor Amy

Eden said the festival was an opportunity for the whole community to connect in this time of significant isolation. “Being the only event of its type in regional Queensland, the Cairns Pride Festival brings together our diverse community in a celebration of our shared tropical lifestyle,” she said. The event will also raise awareness of support services offered by the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health. Formerly the Queensland Aids Council, the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) is a not-for-profit, com-

munity-based organisation that promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, sistergirl and brotherboy Queenslanders. QC Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Reynolds said the organisation was proud to support the passion and work of the local volunteers who run the Cairns Pride Festival, an event that has been held for 13 years. “Cairns Pride Festival is the largest continuing celebration of the diversity and inclusion of LGBTI Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities in the tropical far north, and

ISSUE 1

ELECTORATE

MEET THE CANDIDATES

How do you propose to manage the need to be environmentally sensitive as well as the need for economic development?

JENNIFER COX

ISSUE 2

How do you propose to tackle the important issue regarding escalating crime in our region?

ABOUT

I am a Small Business Owner on the Atherton Tablelands. I am a candidate because I worry about my children’s future. We're all affected by the casualisation of work, stagnant wages, high mortgages, high electricity bills, less support for Medicare and rising education costs. All are direct results of policies where people and the environment are put last, over profit. Politicians are only focused on taking huge donations from companies that seek to buy influence. This is a threat to our democracy and why change is so hard. I have joined the Greens mainly because they do not take corporate donations.

ISSUE 1

One of the four pillars of the Greens Principles is Ecological Sustainability. Good economic management means taking care of our earth. Not treating our most precious resources like a giant business in liquidation. By listening to Scientists, Experts and Locals, while respecting the Environment, the future for Queensland can be prosperous. We need to build our economy on green principles rather than short-term self-interest. We are the custodians of this land so we should preserve it for future generations.

ISSUE 2

Another pillar of the Greens Principles is Social Justice. Many of the social problems we have today; crime, discrimination, disease, poverty could be improved if we focus on eliminating extreme inequality in Australia. The Greens believe in a preventative policy for crime by eliminating poverty. We have policies that will make school free, provide free sport and school lunch programs, build public housing and treat drugs and alcohol as a health issue. But above all by creating jobs through infrastructure spending.

THE GREENS

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? During a pandemic the main concern is Health. COVID is a crisis of government cuts, privatisation and putting corporate profits over crucial public services. Greens are proposing to hire 6,500 more nurses, 3,000 more doctors, and create 21,000 additional hospital beds. All of our policies are costed. Between 2010 and 2020 mining corporations exported over $480 billion of coal, minerals and LNG and only paid 7% on that in royalties, over half of that was given back as rebates. We plan to remove all subsidies and increase royalties on all fossil fuels to a fair rate of 35%. With that alone the Greens want to raise $55 Billion over 4 years. This is a lot of money for us but not for large corporations, many who pay less than 1% tax.

Tara Garozzo, Natural Health and Freedom of Choice Advocate, Representing Informed Medical Options Party, Hill. I am a proud Mumma and every child’s health, well-being, safety and happiness is of utmost importance. As a Mum, as a parent, I want to make sure that every decision we make for our children is the right choice and stand for absolute informed consent. I am passionate about Natural Health Therapies, a sustainable clean industry and a bright future for our children. I stand for small businesses, protection of our Australian cash and demanding absolute truth and transparency in government across all fields.

ISSUE 1

Having the wettest location on the Australian continent, in times of flood and heavy rainfall, massive amounts of load-bearing silt washes directly out to the open ocean, damaging marine species, Indigenous hunting grounds and then out onto the Great Barrier Reef. By sealing unsealed roads that enable the agricultural crops of tea, sugar cane, cattle, banana’s and paw paws, will in return protect the GBR by ceasing silt run off resulting in continued longevity for our tourist attraction.

ISSUE 2

Youth crime can be from lack of role models, supervision and guidance. The Johnstone River Community Gardens are registered with Youth Justice and young offenders are required to assist the gardens and they are seeing positive results. One young man returns regularly after building a table and another admitted he had never been served a salad. This should be available in all areas and Parents/ Guardians should be joining their child to rebuild bonds and relationships. Prevention is better than cure.

Informed Medical Options Party

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? Creating a sustainable clean industry that will create jobs and a bright future for our children. I want to support a local hemp industry to build energy efficient houses, food source, manufacture textile products, hemp plastic products, biodiesel and much more. The hemp industry is booming around the world and is a large industry in countries that can grow only one crop per year whereas we can grow 3 crops per year. We may have some resistance from some of our oil and gas loving politicians but united we will prevail in our quest to improve health, retain cultures and repair a lot of damage done over the past few centuries. To all land custodian’s, Mother Earth loves HEMP. The possibilities are endless.

KAP Member for Hill Shane Knuth has been advocating for regional and rural Queensland since he was first elected and sworn into Queensland Parliament, 17 years ago, On February 7, 2004. He was born in Tully. Before becoming a state MP, Mr Knuth worked for Queensland Rail for 20 years, and with his wife Heather raised four children in the Charters Towers area where he was first elected as an MP. This gave him a passion for rural and regional Queensland which has driven him to fight for farmers, rights, better water infrastructure, road upgrades, health services, schools and more. Mr Knuth was first elected as the Member for Hill on November 25, 2017 and has since had several big wins for the region thanks to the lobbying of constitutes but he said there was still more that he hoped to achieve if he was reelected. Mr Knuth said over the years the KAP have proven they not only talk the talk, but walk the walk with During my time as the State Member for Hill, I have been a strong supporter of the North Johnstone Transfer Project which will have little to no environmental impact on the Great Barrier Reef while boosting water and agriculture sustainability and jobs for our region. It must also be a priority that Catchment Groups, that include farmers, in our region’s develop strategies for water quality, improvements and farm development, rather than Governments big stick approach. It must also be a priority that Catchment Groups, that include farmers, in our region’s develop strategies for water quality, improvements and farm development, rather than Governments big stick approach. Crime is a huge problem in regional Queensland. To help tackle this we would introduce the relocation sentencing program that would give magistrates the power to send troubled offenders out to remote areas and put them to work which will teach them values and skills. This would help them obtain jobs with the feeling of value and worth and aim to break the offending cycle. This would provide a far better alternative to the current system.

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? The electorate of Hill has many issues that need to be addressed. Health and health services is always the most important and it is vital that we provide greater incentive packages for doctors and nurses to live and work in rural and regional Queensland. We are seeing key services in communities across the region, and state, close because they can not get staff. We also need to ensure that those that need it have access to dialysis machines, maternity services and palliative care. We can’t forget

the lack of water infrastructure in the north. We are seeing a huge expansion in the agriculture sector but nothing in the way of water infrastructure development. This needs to be addressed as a matter of priority along with the need for cheaper power through the construction of the Tully Hydro Electric Scheme and co-generation. These are just a few issues that are important to our region, along with road upgrades and the need for more passing lanes.

A tropical north local for four decades, and as the Director of the Tablelands Folk Festival, I have vast experience in promoting the region. As President of the YAI and a member of the Atherton Chamber Of Commerce, I understanding the difficulties of small business in the regions. I believe we are best prepared to kick-start the local economy as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s COVID recover plan. Not only has this government kept Queenslanders safe and healthy, and it has put our state in the best possible position for economic recovery. Preserving and protecting the places and spaces we love is so important to me and our community of Hilll’I have spoken with locals and they know that preserving our environment goes hand in hand with economic development. The Great Barrier Reef is one of our greatest assets valued at $56 billion, supporting 64,000 jobs. I am proud to be part of a community that has a prospering agricultural sector, lush forests and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Labor party is the only party that has managed to get the balance right, demonstrating that you can walk and chew gum at the same time when it comes to the environment and the economy. The Palaszczuk Government’s Economic Recovery Plan is about growing our region which means more jobs, and revitalising our tourism, which means protecting our natural assets and creating jobs. Community safety is my number one priority, and has and always will be prioritised by Labor Government’s here in Queensland. The Palaszczuk Labor government made an announcement just recently that they would fund an additional 2025 police officers over the next five years. We need to have a properly resourced police service to keep members of the Hill community safe and that’s what Labor does. We back police. Our electorate of Hill is positioned to take advantage of these new opportunities that the Palaszczuk Labor Government has released in our Economic Recovery Strategy and I want to be an integral part of it. Hill has been a forgotten electorate for too long - we miss out on things due to a complacent MP who doesn’t fight for the services we need - better schools, hospitals and roads. That’s why it’s so important at this election to vote for Labor, and re-elect the Palaszczuk Labor Government. We can’t risk a minority government during COVID-19. What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue?

ABOUT

DESMOND TAYLEY

Born in Cairns, raised in Wujal Wujal, I have spent most of my life in Cape York, but lived in Cairns and Mareeba too. My recent career focus was Local Government, with the previous four terms as Mayor of Wujal Wujal until 2020 which saw a change of leadership and opened up opportunities for me. My passion is doing what I can for people, whilst creating opportunities. Far north Queensland is our home and having been the Chair of Jabalbina Aboriginal Corporation, Director for Cape York NRM and Mayor, I have developed the skills to bring a strong voice for this electorate.

ISSUE 1

My home is World Heritage. I’m aware of the balance needed for preservation and protection at the same time as enabling economic opportunity. We can ensure and allow both with careful and thorough community engagement and consultation with stakeholders. 2020 saw small businesses impacted as well as community but local employment is core to a strong and vibrant community. The environment and people go hand in hand. It’s about transparency, communication and understanding of the land and people.

ISSUE 2

Crime is not about punishment but about us looking at the underlying issues that lead to the high crime rate such as unemployment or boredom. It needs a holistic common-sense approach that looks after the social fabric of community. Community needs to work with agency and other relevant organisations to work on solutions that address the issues. High cost of living in community is also a factor that needs addressing.

NQ FIRST

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? Each community or town across the electorate has some different priorities but one key issue is with health. Some hospitals are struggling to get equipment, some are struggling with specialised services and some patients need more support. Some people are not attending medical appointments because of the cost and some have no family or friends to help them. The decision makers need to understand the needs for each town or community within the electorate and improve specific areas of need. It

comes back to talking with people and understanding needs. It is not a one size fits all approach for the whole electorate and this needs to be respected. Where one community might need improved dialysis equipment, another might need improved mental health support and the next might need better communication and support with the patients attending appointments. Whatever the issue is, the overarching issue across this electorate is a focus on health.

My name is Edward (Nipper) Brown. I was born in Mossman, grew up in Julatten. 20 years in Telstra mostly in the cook electorate from top to bottom. After Testra in 2003 I started my own business as a sole trader. In 2013 I was elected to the newly formed Mareeba Shire Council and re-elected in 2016. This gave me the desire to be a bigger voice for the people and everyone deserves to have a strong voice. Leaving no demographic or age feeling like their issues do not matter. Our electorate has so much diversity and potential that must be released. The environment and economy are both crucial for our future generations. Protection of the environment is imperative to ensure our kids and their kids enjoy Cooks natural beauty. I will take a responsible approach protecting the Great Barrier Reef safeguarding world heritage areas and local ecosystems. This helps to secure and protect jobs in the electorate. Everyone in the community has the right to feel safe in their home and on the streets. Cook is a remarkably diverse electorate, and the crime issue is at different levels in different communities. Some communities are reporting low levels. I intend to identify why that is and is there a common denominator we can introduce. We will ensure Police have the resources they need to keep the community safe.

LNP

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? There are many important issues right across our electorate that fall under common headings but have different levels for instance, Health is important. The issues range from Birthing at Weipa and Mossman, Dialysis in Mareeba, Accommodation in Pormpuraaw, the state of the buildings at Cooktown and the whole model of service delivery across the cape. Water security. Dams must be built. Lakeland Irrigation scheme is right at the centre of my focus the jobs it will create. We will reduce the price of

I grew up on Iama (Yam Island) in the Torres Strait and worked in health, child protection and family support services throughout Far North Queensland. I am passionate about helping to close the gap in education and health. Since the threat of COVID-19, I have been keen to ensure that stimulus funding from the Palszczuk Labor Government targeted community and economic development and aimed to save, support and create jobs.

We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. I want to ensure our young people and future generations grow up with a reef that is protected and rainforests that are healthy and diverse. The Palaszczuk Labor Government has a strong record when it comes to protecting our unique natural environment, including the Great Barrier Reef and the thousands of jobs it supports. We’re also serious about supporting emerging industries like renewable energy and carbon farming which will create jobs, lower power prices and help reduce emissions.

Keeping communities safe is a big priority for me. There are a range of measures that the Palaszczuk Government is delivering, including across the Cook electorate, to help keep people safe. We back our police, which is why we have announced an additional 150 police in the Far North Region. We’re rolling out sweeping reforms to tackle youth crime and are taking tough action on bail.I want to ensure our police are better equipped than ever before. We know the LNP’s devastating record when it comes frontline services; communities across the Cook electorate cannot risk cuts to police jobs and services.

ISSUE 2

Labor Party

Building stronger communities in this diverse electorate is my key focus. I grew up in one of the most remote areas of Queensland, so I have had a lifetime of lived experience where distance can be a disadvantage for many communities. We live in a diverse region of great potential and I am keen to do all I can to help us overcome the challenges to meet that potential. I have focused on schools, healthcare and key infrastructure like roads and the Palaszczuk Labor Government has invested heavily in these areas. I achieved $10.1 million for improvements to Mossman Hospital’s emergency department, $550,000 to extend the Flagstaff Walking Trail and, more

water for our agricultural sector. Remote indigenous housing, safe and secure housing is critical so I will be advocating to the federal government strongly for this to continue. recently, $4 million for the Newell Beach Boat Ramp.I want to see the completion of the Wangetti Trail over the next couple of years. This $41.4 million project, when completed, will pump more than $300 million into the local economy. An achievement close to my heart was meeting my election commitment to introduce the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (Torres Strait Islander Traditional Child Rearing Practice) Bill in Parliament. This bill, which has been passed in Parliament, will give Torres Strait Island children and adults who have grown up with traditional adoptive parents a legal identity that matches their cultural identity.

I was born in Townsville, grew up in the Cooktown Hopevale region, and returned to Townsville for secondary school and Uni where I achieved a nursing science degree. I’m currently completing a Masters in Public Health, my studies enriched by jobs at Charters and Townsville Hospitals, locum work on Cape York, and in NSW at St Vincent’s Hospital. I gained bureaucratic experience as Deputy CEO of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Association in Canberra and shared my skills when I joined an Australian international health exchange program in Vietnam and Africa, teaching medical English. Katter’s Australian Party is the voice of regional Australia. We’re steeped in respect for country - how it sustains us and how we have an obligation to keep it healthy for all Australians. Farmers know if you don’t look after your land, your land won’t look after you. Our policies balance those interests. My ancestors tended the land; the first principle for Indigenous Australians is to nurture and respect country so it can sustain our bodies and nurture our spirits. KAP acknowledges crime is big in north Queensland. But magistrates only have two options: send offenders to jail or back into the community. KAP’s Relocation Sentencing policy provides another option: magistrates could send offenders to a remote, approved property, where they’d work on the land to learn life skills and become better society members. This would give offenders, particularly young ones, a chance to break the offending cycle before becoming more criminalised, while still keeping the community safe.

What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? My nursing experience has made me determined to improve our shamefully inadequate health services. Our health outcomes are poorer than city-dwellers, our emergency services worse, our specialist services scarcer and our skills-based health training under-resourced. It is so wrong that regional patients have to compete for dialysis chairs or be forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to Cairns or Brisbane for life-saving treatment. Fighting to upgrade health services and the skills of our profession-

als will be my top priority. As a true representative for the people of Cook, I’ll take constituent concerns straight to my party and then to the parliament. If KAP holds the balance of power in a minority parliament, we’ll be in the box seat to negotiate the sorts of health and other outcomes the north deserves. It’s time to end the monopoly of the old parties and ensure regional communities get our rightful share of health dollars. We’ve been neglected for too long.

Earth and rock works plus trees: Stabilising creek banks to improve resilience to extreme rainfall events.

Restoring rivers in the lead-up to wet season EARTHWORKS and tree-planting are giving a Mossman farmer “peace of mind” leading up to the wet season. Carmen Henning-White and husband Trevor White found ravaged creek lines when they inspected their property after floods in early 2018, with chunks of creek bank torn away and large trees swept into the floodwaters. “We’d had erosion on the farm before, through the creek, but nothing like that,’’ Ms Henning-White said. “We lost three to four metres off banks, it was all just gone.” The Whites are one of five Mossman families whose properties are being worked on to stabilise creekbanks and improve their resilience to future rainfall events, thanks to Terrain NRM’s Mossman Integrated Catchment Repair

Project funded through the Queensland Government’s National Resources Investment Program. Terrain NRM’s Ruginia Duffy said two sites had been repaired on the White’s property. She said “rock toes” were built in the streambed, embankments were reshaped and trees, shrubs and grasses planted. “With the rate and level of erosion, combining earthworks and revegetation is the way to hold these streambanks together for the long-term,” she said. “The rock structures are designed to protect the bank while the trees establish.” The Mossman Integrated Catchment Repair Project focuses on the Cassowary and Saltwater Creek catchments. Ms Henning-White said 90m of streambank had been

repaired and more than 1500 trees would be planted as part of the project. “Lots of trees fell in two years ago and when the floodwaters came up against exposed creekbank they swirled, undercut and washed our land away,’’ she said. “This work ticks the boxes for us. The earthworks fortify things and then the trees link it all. I’ve wanted to plant trees for a long time. When this opportunity came along it was our ‘boom’ moment. We’ve added to the plantings and we’re keeping planting.” “We can see on the farm where we’ve got trees we don’t have the issues.” The Mossman Integrated Catchment Repair Project is also reducing the amount of sediment flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.

There are four Rotary Clubs with more than 100 volunteers in Cairns, who carry out service projects, which are volunteer activities such as food stalls, raising thousands of dollars every year for local projects as well as international projects. Rotary Club past president Marcus Curtis-Hill developed the new concept which he said would dispense with Ro-

tary traditions such as weekly meetings, speeches, fines, sergeant and door person.

to service opportunities with other organisations and Rotary branches.

“People nowadays want to be able to give back to the community, but they are very busy and don’t have as much time for weekly meetings,” he said.

Among other projects, the four Cairns Rotary Clubs recently raised $11,000 to purchase a new boat for Sailability Cairns and is currently fundraising to buy a new boat for the Cairns Volunteer Coast Guard.

“There are no minimum requirements for service hours so people with busy lives can commit as much as they are able. “This new concept has already received a lot of interest from other Rotary Clubs around the world.” The club will not create any new service projects, but will help connect members

“Volunteering with Rotary is very rewarding as it’s a great opportunity to meet people and network,” said Mr Curtis-Hill. Corporate membership is also available for businesses get their staff involved to meet their corporate responsibility goals.

MAYOR SUPPORTS KATTERS CHALLENGE

CASSOWARY Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan has thrown his support behind Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter following the latters’ challenge to Scott Morrison to match State funding for the Port Hinchinbrook sewerage treatment plant (STP). Earlier this week Mr Katter sought support and assistance from the Prime Minister to relieve the ‘insurmountable financial pressure being placed on a regional council and ratepayers,’. In his letter to Scott Mor-

rison, Katter senior said it was unconscionable that he should have to lobby for the provision of a ‘basic human right of successfully flushing your toilet,’

Mayor Mark Nolan applauded Katter’s actions adding that the cost of the STP should not be borne by non Port Hinchinbrook residents. “Nolan said that while the States $4.3 million contribution was generous the total project cost, including construction of the sewerage treatment plant and related work to the reticulation net-

work, is estimated to be upwards of $8.6 million. “Federal funding will greatly assist with the STP becoming a reality sooner rather than later and also reduce the financial impact to residents who would face a considerable charge to utilise this service.” said Nolan. Mayor Nolan said the appropriate management of sewerage is an essential service that is needed to ensure the ongoing public health of the community and the Great Barrier Reef.

ELECTRIC BUSES Good. As long as they are quieter than the existing ones. The noisiest buses I have ever heard run the Kewarra route. Lyn, via Facebook

CONNECTING CAIRNS TO BRISBANE

Australia has a proud tradition of major infrastructure projects. The Snowy Hydro perhaps is one of our finest examples. In recent year the NBN was rolled out, destined to change the face of business and communities throughout our nation. This election has more major infrastructure projects on the table. Doubling laneing the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns, or Rockhampton to Cairns seems to be some of the shiny beads and sharp axes offered this election time. The question needs to be asked, at what cost? Not just an economic cost, but environmental as well as social, and will there be productivity gains as a result? We will have greater volumes of traffic, trucks, buses, cars, greater emissions. Having travelled the Hume Highway on several occasions, that dual carriageway is classified as one of the greatest ‘black spots’ in Victoria. The volume of traffic and trucks makes for uncomfortable and at times dangerous driving. Queensland needs vision. We need to break the traditional model and look for alternatives. We need to combine the resources we already have creating efficiencies and build a better way to transport freight and people. Several proposals have been raised at various times to create Intermodal Transport Hubs in the north. Connecting, road freight, rail and sea ports to speed the flow of freight easing costs and utilising the assets we already have. A dual carriageway from Brisbane to Cairns sounds grand, sounds expensive when you need to flood proof 2000 kilometres of road as well. Intermodal Transport Hubs, based in Cairns, Tablelands and Cassowary Coast can provide the solutions we need. With excellent port facilities both in Cairns and Mourilyan Harbour in the Cassowary Coast, a rail line extending south to Brisbane. air freight capacity in Cairns and the Tablelands as well as Mundoo, it’s about time our civic leaders sat around the table and fleshed out what needs to be done to create efficiencies in freight transport. Efficiencies that ease the costs associated as well as transport times, and we also need to consider the cost to society and the environment. Please, will the candidates start talking real long term valuable infrastructure developments, and shelve this go-to safe place of upgrading the Bruce Highway and making it two lanes either way. We need to assist business here and now, not in 30 years’ time when such a project might be finished, if successive governments all have an appetite for it. It’s time to review the promises of all parties. Look for the ones that will take decades to deliver and ask, will the next 4 governments ALL see this project as the burning number 1 priority? Instead speak to your candidates, ask what are the alternatives and look for solutions that deliver long term gains as well as immediate benefits to the community

First was with the onions on top of the sausage and second with onions on the bottom. nNow I clearly could not taste no difference that would cause all the ranting and foot slipping that was happening.

What I did find was that with the onions on the bottom deck was that they did not spill out with the sauce all over my shirt and as to the suggestion about onions making the bread soggy – nah. But tickle me pink the big problem I found was the other huge life choices that I would have to make: the sauces - tomato – BBQ – mustard – sweet or hot chilli. New Catholic Primary School for Northern Beaches THE new heart of the northern beaches just got a whole lot more exciting with the announcement of a new Catholic primary school to be built at The Palms Collection site.

PPNQ Developments Pty Ltd can confirm that the Catholic Diocese of Cairns has entered into a contract with them to acquire the parcel of land identified on the new Masterplan as being allocated for a school. A Development Application for the school will be submitted to Cairns Regional Council in the near future.

goes to the Council vote very soon, and we know the majority of Cairns residents feel the same. Mr Halpin says once approval of the Development Application is received, construction will commence by early-mid 2021, providing much needed jobs, economic growth, new tourist attractions and wide open community spaces for all to enjoy.

PPNQ Developments Managing Director, Darren Halpin, confirmed that the site was already appropriately zoned to accommodate a school and service the growing population of children on the northern beaches.

The multi-faceted development has a little bit of something for everybody. The Palms Collection will deliver hundreds of jobs during construction and more upon completion, as well as inject $34 million into the local economy each year with over 95,000 new visitors to Cairns expected to travel to immerse themselves in the new tourist attraction.

“We have been working with the Diocese for some time, and it’s great news to have them on board. Obviously we are hopeful Cairns Regional Council gives the entire Palms Collection Masterplan the green light when it

The proposed new Masterplan is expected to be the first enviro development™ in the region, merging the latest in sustainable environmental management practices to create one of the most liveable communities in Australia.

Cairns’ Favorite Op Shop

Shiploads of Recycling

TANYA MURPHY CAIRNS’ most beloved second-hand shop has been raising money to protect pets in the region for over 40 years. Proceeds from the Cairns Animal Welfare shop go towards helping local families, especially pensioners, cover the cost of sterilising and micro-chipping their cats and dogs.

LOCAL marine transport company Sea Swift has teamed up with Tagai State College for a highly successful recycling initiative which has raised more than $25,000 for the Torres Strait Islands school in the first half of 2020. Containers for Change is a state-wide container refund scheme, giving Queenslanders an incentive to collect and return containers for recycling, in exchange for a 10 cent refund payment. Since starting their partnership in March 2019, Sea Swift has contributed more than $103,000 in freight for the movement of the bulky recycling bags between the Torres Strait and Cairns. All 17 Tagai State Schools in the outer Torres Strait Is-

lands, Thursday Island and on Horn Island are taking part in the scheme, as well as the local PCYC on Horn Island. General Manager Queensland Operations Peter Domenighini said Sea Swift had purchased 150 bulka bags to keep up with the recycling demand. “We supply the bags and metal frames, and the schools collect the containers and place them in the bags,” said Mr Domenighini. “When full, we collect and return them to Horn Island where they are prepared for their return to Cairns. “On arrival in Cairns, North Queensland Recycling Agents (NQRA) collect the bags, count the number of containers, and then depos-

it the refund payment into the Tagai State School’s account. “We’re absolutely delighted to have teamed up with Tagai State College on such a great community initiative, and the students should be really proud of their efforts. “The scheme is not only an important fundraising initiative for the school, but is also helping to reduce litter in the environment. “The students are making a real difference to plastic pollution ending up in our environment and waterways, which is fantastic.” Queenslanders use close to 3 billion beverage containers every year, with these containers the second most littered item in the state.

Cairns Animal Welfare President Erbacher said the charity subsidised the sterilisation of thousands of animals per year. “We reduce the number of unwanted animals being born and abandoned, and that in turn helps protect native wildlife from stray animals,” she said. “None of this would be possible without the generous donations of pre-loved goods from the Cairns local community and we’re very grateful for that.” The charity also offers subsidies for people of low income, such as pensioners, to get emergency veterinary treatment for sick or injured pets. It also recently donated $250,000 to Paws and Claws Port Douglas to go towards the purchase of its new ac-

The charity has around 50 regular volunteers, including Wendy and Fay Mitchell who have been involved since it was first started by Dot Etty more than 40 years ago, and honorary life members Bob Hollis and Kathy Beer. This is the most cheery and bustling op shop you will ever visit with around 12 volunteers staffing the shop each day, from the truck drivers that pick up large donated items from local homes three days a week, to the people sorting and folding

the clothes. Items on offer include fashion, winter clothes, tested and tagged electrical appliances, Manchester, children’s clothing and toys, books, CDs, DVDs, dress-up costumes themed to the time of year, and furniture. Make sure you set aside time for your visit as you can while away a good hour exploring all the nooks and crannies of this charming shop! The shop is open Monday to Friday 9am-3pm and Saturday 9am to midday.

NOT A FLYING FOX GIVEN TANYA MURPHY

A cherry picker and a number of volunteer wildlife carers from Tolga Bat Hospital spent more than two hours rescuing three spectacled flying fox pups which were abandoned by their mothers in trees outside the Cairns Library on Tuesday. A fourth abandoned pup was discovered in the late afternoon, and rescuers believe it won’t be the last as birthing season gets into full swing. Cairns Bats group advocate Riah Holland said the continued roosting of mother flying foxes with their babies in the trees seemed to indicate the Cairns Regional Council’s bat dispersal and deterrent program, costing $500,000 per year, was not working. Between 4am and 6:30am every morning, noise and lights are deployed by contractors to scare the flying foxes away. This has now been happening for more than 100 days and according to council, will continue permanently. A council representative said the Federal regulator had determined that flying foxes were no longer roosting at the site. “Council received Federal approval for the dispersal program to continue permanently in the form of deterrents under the Queensland Code of Practice – Ecologically sustainable management of flying-fox roosts Nature Conservation Act 1992,” he said. “Officers from Queensland Department of Environment and Science compliance unit attended the library site on Friday October 9 and observed the whole day’s activities. “They subsequently verbally advised Council officers that there were no concerns with the actions and that Council was conforming with requirements of the Code of Practice.” Ms Holland said she and other carers had attended the site every morning for more than 100 days and photographed flying foxes that were roosting in the trees and were still being dispersed, and the abandoned pups found clinging to the trees’ upper branches on Tuesday were further evidence of this. “Every morning I have seen flying foxes roosting in the trees for up to half an hour before being dispersed, which causes them a lot of stress and could be linked to the abandonment of pups. “I have also counted and photographed more than 2,000

flying foxes every morning recently trying to return to the roost, indicating that they have not found anywhere else to form a maternity camp. “These flying foxes have been seen in trees scattered around the region, but their continual efforts to return to the Library roost indicate that they have not been safely relocated to a better place where they can safely raise pups, and are still essentially homeless.” Wildlife ecologist for the council’s Flying Fox Advisory Committee Sera Steves said she agreed with council that the flying foxes would be safer if re-established somewhere more appropriate away from urban development, but that this should not be carried out during birthing season or while dependent pups were present. “The actions the council is continuing to use are legal under the as-of-right authority and are considered ‘deterrent’ actions yet now they have eclipsed that definition, as Spectacled Flying Foxes are roosting in the tree at night and occasionally by day,” she said. “This [deterrent action] should not be continuing while mothers are in late stages of pregnancy or with dependent pups. The choice to do so undermines the council’s primary reasoning for the action, being for their welfare.” Ms Holland said the flying fox population had declined by 40 per cent in the last 10 years. “Thousands of them died in heat stress events, and this dispersal during pupping just places further stress on a species that is already listed as endangered and on the brink of being critically endangered,” she said. “The spectacled flying fox is one of only three keystone species which pollinate and disperse seeds of rainforest plants, so anyone who cares about the future of our World Heritage Listed rainforest and the associated tourism and economic benefits it provides, should give a flying fox about these animals.” Last year more than 700 pups were abandoned at the site during construction of nearby hotels, a huge increase from around 80 per year on previous years. “Now that construction has finished, the flying foxes should be allowed to raise their pups in the trees in peace instead of being subjected to further stress by this dispersal,” said Ms Holland.

How to Get that Interview

| 16

EVA GRABNER “It’s not whether you get knocked down. It’s whether you get up.” Vince Lombardi When you apply for an advertised position, you are often one of many qualified applicants, especially in the current job market. A job interview is critical for advancing through the hiring process, positioning yourself as a strong candidate and accepting a job offer. It is essential to create a strategy that best demonstrates your qualifications and elevates you above your competition. I would like to help you explore ways you can improve your ability to get an interview and secure a job offer. First of all, knowing that you are likely one of many applicants, how do you get “noticed”? There are a few steps that you can follow to greatly increase your odds of landing that interview. Here are my top 10 ways to get an interview: 10. Be Specific

Develop a list of specific target companies that you can identify to those with whom you are networking. For example, if you say, “I want to work in engineering,” that doesn’t really get my brain working. However, if you say, “ I want to work for XYZ company in an engineering capacity, namely leading a team of hardware engineers,” that helps me to a) understand what you are looking for and b) start thinking about who I may know at XYZ company. 9. Know Your Strengths Knowing what you bring to the table and clearly articulating it sets you apart from the masses right away. Often, people are not clear on what they can do to specifically help a company. Companies want to know what you can do for them... it helps to answer that question well. 8. Research Your Target Companies Know

those

companies

that appeal to you and appear to be a great fit. If you don’t know about the company or if you don’t really want to work there, it typically shows in a conversation. If you are ex-

cited about the potential of working for the company and you have clearly done your research that will make you extremely appealing and different from the rest. 7. Develop A Resume That Stands Out From The Rest I have seen great resumes and terrible resumes. What makes a great resume? Clearly defining what problems you will solve for the company and adjusting the resume based on the job available are two important factors. Highlight your achievements rather than your responsibilities, this way you are showing what you have actually done in your last role instead of just copying and pasting your position description. 6. Write An Cover Letter

Effective

Since your cover letter serves as your first chance to make a good impression on the hiring team, customize this introductory note for the job listing. Be succinct, a cover letter should be short, sharp and to the point and should not copy what already is in your resume but purely an overview of your skills which should tie in with what the selection criteria outlined in the job advert or application pack. At the end of the cover letter, prompt the hiring manager to take the next step in the application process. For example, you can encourage the hiring manager to schedule an interview with you to discuss the job opening further. 5. Don’t Be Afraid To Call The Hiring Manager Be assertive. If you know who the hiring manager is, call him/her and briefly state that you have applied for the position. Take the opportuni-

ty to alert them to this and let them know that if they took ten minutes to meet with you, they would find you a viable candidate. The worst thing that can happen is that you get turned down. 4. Don’t Rely On Job Boards Not that you cannot find a job utilizing a job board but statistics show that 90% of jobs are never posted (which is why #2 is what it is) and those that are posted are swamped with job seekers taking the traditional, ineffective route. 3. Create Your Brand Utilizing Social Media Develop your brand as an industry expert using LinkedIn and, if you’re brave, Twitter. Post professional, relevant articles that are pertinent to the type of jobs in which you are interested. Ensure that your personal social media profiles are marked private and are only viewed by a select few. Trust me – ALL hiring managers and recruiters will search your social media profiles to see how you present yourself. 2. Network I can’t say this strongly enough. The best way to make it to the top of the resume pile is to network. Network within your own industry and community and tell people that you are searching for your next opportunity. Meet with recruiters that can help you and who work with companies in your industry. Then, most importantly – follow up! 1. Follow Up Networking and all the other steps are worthless without following up. Be persistent without being obnoxious. Ask your contact how best he/she likes to be communicated with and how often. Respect that they have their own priorities

but don’t give up if they don’t respond immediately. While nothing can guarantee an interview, taking a proactive, professional approach will certainly increase your odds. Can we help you? How to tell if you need new tyres BAD tyres lead to accidents, while good tyres keep you safer on the road. The tyres of your car take a real beating over time. A tyre failure, while you are driving, may cause you to lose control of the vehicle. This is a situation no driver ever wants to be in. That’s why it is good to know when your tyres are looking a little worse for wear and change them before there is an incident. Here are some simple things you can do to ensure your tyres are in good shape. Tread depth The tread depth on your tyres should never fall below 1.6 millimetres. If you regularly drive on slick or wet surfaces you will be better off with twice that much depth. You can easily buy a gauge to measure

your tread depth the same way the professionals do. These days tyres have convenient tread wear indicator bars built into them. These bars are barely visible when the tyre is new but as they gradually wear down these bars begin to appear. The bars are flat and run perpendicular to the direction of the tread itself. If more than one or two are visible this means the tread is getting low and the tyre needs replacing. The tread bars will be particularly obvious when driving on wet tracks as they will leave obvious prints. However, it is better to change your tyres before you reach this point as it is dangerous to drive in the wet without proper tyre tread. Leaks and weak spots The other place in which problems with tyres can ap-

pear is in the side wall. Visual checks of this area are relatively simple. Look for tracks or cuts in the sidewall. These should be quite obvious to the naked eye. A particularly noticeable mark in the sidewall could be a sign your tyre is developing leaks or even worse, is ready to blow and will need replacing immediately. Take note of cracked and weathered sidewalls as these signs of wear can also lead to future problems. If you can see a bulge or a blister on your tyre that seems to extend outward from the rest of the surface, it could mean the outer surface of the tyre has begun to weaken. This weak spot can cause a sudden blowout, which is extremely dangerous when your vehicle is moving. Get into the habit of checking for weak spots on

your tyres regularly. Vibrations Vibration is inevitable when driving especially on poorly paved or unpaved roads. If you have been driving for a while you will probably be able to tell the difference between normal vibrations and when something is not right. Lots of vibration could mean that your tyres are misaligned or unbalanced. It could also mean that your shock absorbers are starting to go or there is an internal problem with one of your tyres. Even if your tyres are not the direct cause of the vibration, they could eventually damage the tyre. If you notice a large amount of vibration, particularly when driving on well-paved roads, you should get your car checked out right away.

Own it now, pay later Interest free, nothing to pay upfront, flexible repayments.

Protect your car during storm season

Keeping your car under cover during these events will offer the greatest protection against damage, however this isn’t always possible or practical.

Please don’t pick-up

WE all have experienced it at some stage. We’re driving and our phone pings, there’s a message there. We resist the urge to pick the phone up and check the message, because there’s traffic lights ahead, and we can check the message when we stop at the lights.

while using a mobile phone held in your hand is illegal – even if you’re stopped at a red light. You cannot operate any function on your phone while it’s in your hand. This includes holding the phone next to or near your ear; writing, sending or reading a text message; or turning your phone on or off. Penalties

No problem? Well, yes there is. Driving

You can be fined $1000

and have 4 demerit points recorded against your traffic history if your mobile phone is in your hand and being used for any reason while you are driving—including when you’re stopped at traffic lights or in congested traffic. Double demerit points apply for second or subsequent mobile phone offences committed within 1 year after an earlier offence.

Here are some tips to protect your car from storm related damage. • Plan ahead. If a storm is forecast, try to make arrangements to park your vehicle under cover, delay the trip or use alternative modes of transport. • If caught in a storm, look for safe shelter. This could include a covered car park, a service station awning, under a bridge etc. Don’t place yourself or others at risk by where you choose to shelter. Be considerate of property owner’s rights if sheltering on private property.

Safety should always be your priority • Don’t park or shelter under trees. They can be blown over or drop branches.

• Consider where you park. If the area has a history of flooding in extreme weather events, find somewhere else to stop.

• Don’t speed up to beat a storm. This can lead to a crash – instead look for a safe place to shelter until the storm passes.

• If your home or yard is prone to flooding organise a safe alternative parking spot for your car.

• If caught in a severe storm where visibility is reduced, try to pull well off the road to avoid being hit by other traffic.

While we live in the Sunshine State, us Queenslanders know it’s not always blue skies. From cyclones, floods and summer storms, we’ve experienced our fair share of natural disasters. Alarmingly, RACQ statistics show half of all Queensland homeowners have done nothing to prepare for the upcoming storm season. So, are you and your family prepared for when disaster strikes next?

• Turn on lights to increase visibility while driving and use the hazard lights if you are forced to stop at the side of the road. Wherever possible choose a safe place to stop. • If it’s flooded – forget it. Even relatively shallow flowing water can sweep vehicles away.

Are you storm prepared?

Tolga Bat Hospital Voted into top 10 Worldwide attractions on TripAdvisor PHIL BRANDEL

THE Tolga Bat Hospital has recently been acknowledged as one of the top attractions in the world according to TripAdvisor reviewers. According to the travel and rating site, “Reviews from millions of TripAdvisor travellers place this (The Tolga bat Hospital) attraction in the top 10% worldwide.” Director of the Tolga Bat hospital Jennefer Mclean said the high rating was because visitors could get up close with a number of different bat and flying fox species. “Visitors can get up close to the bats when they are feeding, it gives them a personal experience and an emotional bond between the person and the animal,” she said Jennefer said the hospital has about 6 different types of bats and flying foxes and about 5 different types of microbats on display. “All the bats are different

to each other, they eat different food and they have distinct personalities,” she said. “We are only open from 3-6pm because that’s when the bats come down to feed, so you can get up close and appreciate their different characteristics.” “We are one of the only places in the world where you can meet so many different types of bats up close.” Ms Mclean said due to COVID tour numbers had been reduced to only about 6 people per tour. “Our numbers are down due to COVID and social distancing, which means we are getting fewer people through the gate, but it means visitors are getting a more personable and quality experience, “she said. “After people have visited they also feel more educated about bats and their habitats.” According to Trip Advisor “The Travellers Choice winners are calculated on the

millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from travellers around the world on Tripadvisor,” they wrote. “The awards take into account the quality and quantity of traveller’s reviews, and ratings specific to each award category. The hallmark of winners is and will continue to be remarkable service and quality experiences for travellers.” The Tolga Bat Hospital Visitors Centre is open daily from 3 - 6 pm, but bookings are essential. Jennefer also said that Little Red Flying foxes have returned to the Tolga scrub as locals had discovered some of them caught on barb wire fences. “If anyone spots a flying fox caught on a fence or in any sort of distress or injury please call the bat hospital on 4091 2683.”

Art Deco Capital of Australia IN 1879, Ireland-born Thomas Henry Fitzgerald came to the Cassowary Caost region to establish a sugar industry.

architecture of Innisfail can be credited to a devastating cyclone that wiped out the region in 1918.

The house built by Fitzgerald (which was the first established in the area) was named Innisfallen, after the largest island in the Lakes of Killarney, Ireland.

Many buildings made out of timber and corrugated iron were destroyed or damaged extensively, and the two buildings that remained in the Innisfail CBD were built from reinforced concrete.

Inis Fail (Island of Destiny) is an early name for Ireland itself. In 1879, the settlement was named Geraldton, (after Fitzgerald) but was retitled ‘Innisfail’ in 1910 to avoid confusion with the Western Australian town of the same name. The Art Deco designed

As the town was rebuilt, it was decided that it would be necessary to cyclone-proof Innisfail, and with Art Deco being the internationally popular style of the time – Tropical Art Deco was born. Throughout the Innisfail CBD you will discover Art deco facades inspired by

Italian, French, Spanish, Moroccan and Anglo-Saxon architecture. These global influences are homage to the diverse and multicultural past of the Cassowary Coast region. Innisfail is rapidly becoming recognised as one of Australia’s great Art Deco towns, with the CBD showcasing one of the largest concentrations of Art Deco buildings in the country. Due to the climate of Far North Queensland, the traditional Art Deco architecture style was adapted to include wide awnings and peaked roofs to provide relief from heavy rains. This means

that the beautiful buildings are distinctive and are rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Innisfail is one hours’ drive from Cairns and well worth the visit. If you visit, download the Tropical Art Deco App from the Play store and take a 2.5 hour guided walk through this magnificent town. Spend a little longer, visit Oliveri’s Deli and have lunch at Sapore di Italia on Rankin Street. You will be guaranteed a magnificent day.

Staying indoors on a Saturday evening in this delightful spring weather is absolutely “inconceivable!” Cult classic “The Princess Bride” will be screened at Cairns Botanic Gardens from 7:30pm this Saturday, October 17. The open-air event is organised by Starry Night Cinema and Culture Mechanics.

JCU associate professor Jamie Seymour with Worklink Staff at the Stress Less Day breakfast.

Easing the sting of depression TANYA MURPHY JAMES Cook University’s Associate Professor Jamie Seymour is well known as one of the world’s leading experts on venomous and deadly animals, especially box jellyfish. However, during Mental Health Week this week, he has spoken out about an even deadlier threat he has encountered: depression. Professor Seymour was a keynote speaker to 190 guests from business and community services, at the Stress Less Day breakfast hosted by Worklink at the Pullman on Wednesday morning. In his powerful presentation, Professor Seymour described the mental challenges he faced after working as part of the team on the boat

voyage where Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray. The story of Professor Seymour’s journey acted as a backdrop for discussion around why acknowledging mental health is important and the power of help-seeking for an illness that touches around 50% of Australians. Worklink manager Stephanie Coleman said the event was in its 18th year, and with the additional stresses of COVID-19, the message was more important than ever. “No one would doubt that this year has been a challenge for business and on personal levels for many,” she said. She said the fact that the Stress Less Day event sold out in a matter of days was a good sign that people were taking their mental health se-

riously. “Unfortunately there are still a large and increasing number of workers and people in the community not feeling they can get help,” she said. The Black Dog Institute and Beyond Blue have forecast a ‘second wave’ of mental health crisis due to the challenges faced by the community under the pandemic. Mental Health First Aid trainer and psychological science scholar Mark Schmitt said that just like any other type of illness, correct diagnosis and treatment were the key. “There are no clear explanations for who and why we might develop a mental illness, but one thing is for sure, hiding it only makes things worse,” he said.

Limited tickets are available for this COVID-safe event. Tickets available at www.trybooking.com/ BLMEI

Campgrounds closed

Archer Point camping will be temporarily limited to a smaller area while the popular recreation site is rehabilitated following concerns about environmental and cultural heritage damage. The State Government, with the support of Yuku Baja Muliku Traditional Owners, has temporarily closed camping at George’s Beach, First Beach and other locations at the site, south of Cooktown. Archer Point is still open for day trips, with a designated area also set aside for camping, and visitors are reminded to look after the area by not driving on the dunes, taking rubbish home with them and not removing trees or vegetation. Lake Morris Road closure Lake Morris Road will be closed for resealing from Campbell’s Lookout to Copperlode Dam for a week from Thursday October 15, weather permitting. The road will be closed temporarily on weekdays to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians between 7am and 6pm for an expected period of a week. Traffic management will be in place to allow essential worker access, however delays are expected. The length of Lake Morris Road will be resealed, starting at Copperlode Dam, and when works progress below Campbell’s lookout, traffic will be managed under traffic control. The road will be open on the weekend however loose stones will be present and cyclists are requested to observe caution.

Donation to Innisfail Hospital The Innisfail Friends of the Hospital this week presented a Birthing Pool and Sling to Innisfail Hospital’s Maternity Ward. This generous donation would not have been possible without the continued support of the Cassowary Coast community. The presentation was held at Innisfail Hospital and attended by Tony Williamson, CEO Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, Cassowary Coast Mayor, Mark Nolan and Clive Skarott, CHHHS Chairman.

Digital art funding sought A new and vibrant, $250,000 digital art projection could be part of next year’s Cairns Festival celebrations. Council will apply to the Australian Government’s Arts and Cultural Development Program grant stream, Festivals Australia, for $100,000 to support the delivery of the large-scale project. The proposed art activation is seen as an opportunity to stimulate the recovery of the local arts sector through an activation that will attract cultural tourism and increase local resilience in the sector. The project will support regional artists, drive local employment and re-engage audiences in the region after the significant impacts of COVID-19.

Tickets will sell out at first sight DON’T miss your chance to get tickets for local singer-songwriter and Married at First Sight heartthrob Drew Brauer’s much anticipated show at the Tanks this Friday, October 16. Combining high energy dance tunes with melodious lyrical story-telling, Drew, also known as Drewboy is destined to set hearts alight with the launch of his new single, ‘At First Sight,’ in-

spired by his own quest for love and part in this year’s Married at First Sight reality television series.

A multi-faceted talent, Drewboy is also responsible for establishing Australian mental health charity, Kick On, as well as facilitating self-defence workshops for women. Drewboy will be supported by Townsville’s Angus Milne who just so happens to come

with his own reality tale, after his King Social five-piece band made the top five in the 2016 season of Australia’s Got Talent. While heading up King Social for the past eight years, Milne hasn’t lost his country roots and childhood in Longreach where he said he found his voice on the back of a horse. STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: You’ll be very much in your feelings—in the best possible way—on October 19 when lucky Jupiter in your twelfth house of spirituality forms a positive trine to social Venus in your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy. Getting in touch with deep-rooted emotions that are driving your desires and motivations now can offer helpful insight into your relationships and even serve as creative inspiration.

GEMINI: You’ll be focused on commitment and taking your closest relationships to the next level on October 24 when romantic Venus in your fourth house of home life forms a harmonizing angle to taskmaster Saturn in your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy. If you’ve been considering moving in with your significant other, signing a new, long-term lease, or sharing your deepest, most heartfelt emotions with a loved one, now’s the time to dive right in. It’s also a sweet time to get creative with interior design or projects that bring in shared income.

LIBRA: You’ll be feeling full of love for your nearest and dearest on October 19 when your ruling planet, romantic Venus in your twelfth house of spirituality forms a harmonizing trine to lucky Jupiter in your fourth house of home life. You might do well to carve out time on your agenda to bond with loved ones and devote extra energy to self-care—two endeavors that can serve to restore your spirit.

PISCES: Zeroing in on your deepest desires and making a play for them can feel liberating and empowering around October 16 when the new moon falls in your eighth house of emotional bonds and sexual intimacy. You’ll be reflecting on the ways your closest relationships fulfill your needs—or not— and thinking on the best, most productive ways to express your feelings. This can be a lovely time to trust your intuition—not to mention a moment that’s ripe for relationship-bolstering.

CANCER: You’ll be able to gather information, especially in regard to joint ventures, in a clearheaded way on October 21 when social Venus in your third house of communication forms a harmonizing trine to transformative Pluto in your seventh house of partnership. If you’ve been wanting to have a serious heart-to-heart with a loved one, the timing is right to lay your cards on the table. This could lead to even more intimacy.

SCORPIO: You’ll have an easy time connecting with friends and colleagues on big, exciting ideas on October 19 when social Venus in your eleventh house of networking forms a harmonizing trine to lucky Jupiter in your third house of communication. It’s a great day to do a group brainstorm or make strides on an ongoing, long-term team effort. And on October 21, Venus forms a positive trine to transformative Pluto there, as well, bumping up the intensity of your connections—and your razor focus on what you want to accomplish.

ARIES: Crossing all those mounting work-related to-dos off your list can not only come more easily than usual but feel fun and filled with opportunities to build on your relationships with colleagues and higher-ups on October 19 when social Venus in your sixth house of daily routine forms a harmonizing trine to lucky Jupiter in your tenth house of career. You’ll also be feeling especially optimistic so it can be an ideal time to think ahead, dream, and reflecting on goals you want to refine moving forward.

LEO: While the confident sun moves through your fourth house of home life from October 22 to November 21, your focus will be on time with loved ones, fostering close familial relationships, and nurturing your sanctuary. You might find yourself baking up your favorite fall recipes (that one that grandma always loved) or finding ways to spruce up your home office to make it feel cozier. In short, if you prefer to nest than get out and about, you’re right on track.

SAGITTARIUS: You might feel like spending some time “underground,” focusing on your dreams, quiet self-care routines, and plotting for whatever lies ahead from October 22 to November 21 while the confident sun moves through your twelfth house of spirituality. Although life will take on a less lively tone than usual, this can still be an exciting time—for personal growth and mapping out what you want to accomplish in the weeks and months to come.

TAURUS: You’ll be craving pleasurable, creativity-boosting moments, ideally shared with someone special or your significant other on October 21 when relationship-oriented Venus in your fifth house of romance forms a harmonizing trine to transformative Pluto in your ninth house of higher education. Getting out of your comfort zone together—think taking a road trip or sharing an experience that allows you to learn something new—can bolster your bond in a thrilling way.

VIRGO: While the confident sun moves through your fourth house of home life from October 22 to November 21, your focus will be on time with loved ones, fostering close familial relationships, and nurturing your sanctuary. You might find yourself baking up your favorite fall recipes (that one that grandma always loved) or finding ways to spruce up your home office to make it feel cozier. In short, if you prefer to nest than get out and about, you’re right on track.

CAPRICORN: Your appetite for new knowledge and experiences is elevated on October 19 when social Venus in your ninth house of higher education and adventure forms a harmonizing trine to lucky Jupiter in your sign. Pair up with a friend or loved one to find what you’re looking for, which could be taking an impromptu weekend trip or listening to an eye-opening podcast.

The 4-0 thumping meant the Tigers completed their season undefeated outlining the enormous gap between them and the rest of the field. The saving grace for the Bulls came when the Innisfail Cutters only managed a 4-1 win over Stratford United, meaning that the Bull’s, who finished the season in third position, will have a home knockout semi-final this weekend against Innisfail. The Men’s Premier Reserves have been sensational this year and finished the season off in style after seeing off their third placed opponents Edge Hill United 7-0 which triggered celebrations well into the night at the Club. The Reserves will play a

The Edge Hill Club is closed Mondays. Currently opening Tuesday to Thursday at 3pm till Late, Friday to Sunday from 12noon till Late.

Barron won by 2 runs, but the local Cardiac Challenge appeal was the real winner with over $1,500 raised for people directly affected by heart conditions in North Queensland.

nually between the 2 clubs.

Dan Freebody laid the foundation for Barron with a great batting performance before retiring to give his side some much needed time in the middle. A brilliant 90 by Mark Ellis kept Norths in the chase right up until the last ball of the day! “This is what local cricket is all about! A carnival atmosphere with both clubs playing all 3 grades out at Crathern Park”president of Norths Nick Lyngcoln said. Fast forward one week later and Barron LJ Hooker break the hearts of Norths Lord Insurance by winning AWAY TEAM

a one run thriller in the 1st round of the One Day season this time at Norths Cricket Cairns Home ground with Norths needing a six off the last ball to secure the victory.

Once again Dan Freebody was in the runs for Barron River with Shane Shaw also getting a tidy 56 off 66 balls. In response, Norths Lords Insurance was left reeling at 9-97 still needing 86 to win with only one wicket in hand which setup a nail biting finish to the season opener as a gallant partnership between Kyll Wright and Peter Beal left the run chase one run short securing Barron victory.

“Jordan Fulton was the best bowler of the day with taking 3-19 off eight overs. Ryan Charrington is extremely proud of the club for their training efforts in the preseason putting the club in a great position to win both games, this will build the foundation to hopefully break their premiership drought”, the Barron River president said. In other first round games Mulgrave suffered a heavy loss to Rovers and Atherton starts where it left off with a dominant win of Cassowary Coast.

BRAD SINCLAIR FINALS football is finally upon us in a season that many thought would not happen due to COVID, we have finally made the pointy end of the season, albeit in mid October. Whenever finals time comes along, it’s a time of year that puts a spring in the step of many football lovers and 2020 is no different despite the challenges thrown up. The top four teams this year are Port Douglas, Cairns Saints, South Cairns & Cairns City Lions. The first game to be hotly contested will be the Elimination Final between South Cairns and Cairns City Lions on Saturday at 2pm. The winner lives another day but for the loser it’s curtains and attention will be toward the short break before their pre season starts again. The two times these teams have met this year

has provided the same winner each time, firstly back in Round 6 at Fretwell Park the Lions were victorious at the Cutters home ground with Lions crumbing forward Brayden Culhane helping himself to 5 goals and Ashton Hams and youngster Nick Johnson were also terrific for the Lions. The Lions won the first encounter by 19 points and the second time they met only 2 weeks ago the Lions were big winners by 85 points on their home ground. Captain Coach Aaron Davey has an exciting list that could cause some real headaches in following weeks if they get over the Cutters in this first final. He, himself can turn a game in minutes with precise kicking and put team mates in a good position moving forward. Throw in the excitement machine Ross Tungatalum, Eddie Sansbury, Brandon Lovell, Peter Yagmoor & Adam Tipungwuti and you have the

make up of a team that can score quickly and heavily. This scoring power will put a lot of pressure on Cutters defenders but they do have the ever reliable veteran Cameron Campbell back there to marshall the troops when needed. If Roach can give players like Lachlan Rhook, Curtis Allen, Joel Karwan & Jordan Greene first use of the ball and their delivery is good inside 50 for players such as Josh Barnett, James Dixon & Dwayne Bosen then I give the Cutters some sort of chance. But the Lions defence led by ex Melbourne champion Davey, Sean Connelly and Peter Yagmoor when used dropping back into defence is a hard ask as well. The other game is the Qualifying Final between the undefeated Port Douglas Crocs and Cairns Saints which will get underway at Cazalys Stadium on Satur-

day at 6.30pm. Has there been a more dominant side in the Cairns competition in the past twenty years? This is a very well oiled machine that is coached brilliantly by one of the most determined coaches I have seen in my time in Brad Cooper. The first time they met the Crocs on their home patch the won by 82 points and in the return game at Griffiths Park only 21 days ago they again won, but this time by a whopping 126 points. The Saints playing coach Wes Glass knows better than most how powerful this team is having played in the 2019 Premiership with them before taking on his first coaching role. As you so often hear these days that the game is won around the stoppages and with players of the calibre such as Ben Morrow,

Cairns Local News

Jackson McDonald, Daniel Moore, Josh Mawson, Jai Florent, Tyson Milne, Daniel Davidson, Brett McKeown and a host of others that can spend time through the midfield, this is a huge ask for the Saints. The Saints will continually be under the pump up back. One thing is for certain, the Saints forwards, Alex Galea, Josh Smith, Rhys Bridge, Kieran Daley, Tom Messenger and Nathan Edwards will not always get great supply forward due to the pressure their midfield will be under as they try to get the ball forward. Finals has finally arrived and whatever the outcome come Saturday night I am sure that all games contested in this finals series will be well worth watching, so get down and support some fantastic local football this Final series.

Passionate about their league PETER MCCULLAGH

AS people we all have our dreams and fantasies. We would hit the winning runs in a crucial test match, or intercept a pass and run unchallenged 80 metres to slide over under the post to win the grand final. Sport allows us to be free, to be passionate and to feel like we belong to a larger tribe. In recent years many of the barriers around sport have been torn down. Sport has become more accessible for all, irrespective of age, sex or abilities. ARC Disability Services and Cairns Brothers Rugby lLeague have combined resources to offer All Abilities Rugby League to approximately 20 young adults. Gordon Will, a support worker with ARC Disability Services assists with the Friday morning sessions. “Any sport should be open to anyone. With the help of Cairns Brothers Leagues Club and Tim Rumford we have a great program here every Friday. We see tremendous improvements by those involved. Their self-esteem, coordination has all improved. It’s all about having fun and socialising and then feeling they are part of the sport they are passionate about,” said Gordon. “These participants, all have

Keen North Queensland Cowboys supporter Michael Shearer, loves his Friday session. “We get outside to play, when it’s not too hot. So we do ball passing, drills and play games.” When asked what the best thing about All Abilities Rugby League, Michael was most concise.

Cairns Brothers Football Manager, Tim Rumford coordinates the program locally. Based upon a similarly successful program from the UK, the local program is designed to be open and flexible to the physical side of the sport and up to those very passionate and proud supporters, who would love to play but cannot. “We tailor the drills and activities to suit. It’s all about getting active, having fun and feeling like you are participating in the sport you love,” said Tim.

The truly refreshing aspect of watching their ‘training’ session, was it was all about fun, plenty of laughter and support for each other.
