Mike Morris is among homeowners seeking government action after finding out his apartment may soon be uninsurable.

When Mike Morris purchased an apartment at the Lakes resort in Cairns, he looked forward to living out his retirement in peace, but this dream is quickly becoming a nightmare as he and other residents discover their properties may soon be uninsurable. Two buildings at The Lakes resort in Cairns were left without insurance for three months this year, and ended up having to under-insure their properties by more than $1 million each, after no other options could be found. They had to wait weeks to acquire a special dispensation from the Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management to insure their buildings for less than their value. This comes as new analysis from Climate Risk has revealed more than 445,000 addresses in Australia where insurance is expected to become unaffordable or unavailable within 30 years. After analysing 500 locations around Australia, Climate Risk analyst Karl Mellon said Cairns properties were in the top 10% of properties at risk of becoming uninsurable, due to their low lying coastal loca-

CAIRNS social media lit up late last month when Shannon Brianese got the news every missing pet owner prays for. Her long-lost Shar Pei cross Bruno had been found after getting lost on a run behind Edmonton quarry in early August. Ms Brianese, 23, was desperate to get her best mate back and turned to local Facebook community, Cairns Animals Lost, Found and Reunite.
“The burning of coal and fossil fuels is causing sea levels to rise and cyclone severity to increase, so it seems reasonable that the people who profit from those industries should give a small amount of those profits to help people adapt their properties,” he said.
“He’d been gone for a month and I started to worry I might never see him again” Ms Brianese said. “But the group never gave up searching.”
“But what we need right now is an immediate solution to help make insurance affordable.”
They mounted a twomonth long search which saw Bruno’s story shared more than 100 times.
The group is Cairns largest lost animal community with more than 22000 members.
“There were sightings of him from Bentley Park to the Gordonvale backroads,” said Ms Brianese. The group was started in 2011 by Briony Pratt after finding a number of missing dogs in her neighbourhood. Ms Pratt credits the group’s success to its members who are dedicated animal lovers willing to give up their time to help bring someone else’s pet home safely. “It can be the middle of the night and while you’re sleeping someone will be out there looking for your lost animal.” she said. “It’s amazing.” Ms Pratt said the first thing to do when your pet goes missing is post to the group then check the vets and pound but above all make sure your pet is microchipped. Bruno was finally found five minutes from home, skinny and with scar on his back left leg to remind him never to go missing again.
