Cruising the tropics
After the tour of Cairns, the Royal couple were ferried back to the “S.S. Gothic” which was anchored off Fitzroy Island. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh then enjoyed two days off at Seaforth Island and the Whitsundays before heading to Mackay.

THE ROYAL visit in 1954 included a break from the Queen’s busy schedule to enjoy a cruise in the tropics along the Great Barrier Reef. After touring Townsville, the Queen, Eliz abeth II, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, were ferried to the Royal yacht, “S.S. Police and ambulance workers had feared some spectators could faint as a result of the heat and excitement. When two overcrowded temporary grandstands collapsed during the proceedings they immediately swung into ac tion and transferred the injured to hospital.
The Royal party then enjoyed a cruise along the coast enroute to Cairns. Her Maj esty had possibly already had a taste of the tropics prior to her departure from Brisbane. A dozen granadillas from Smithfield had been included in a basket of fruit presented to the Queen.
Tropical orchids had been sent to numer ous venues around Australia for the Queen’s visit. In one consignment 1200 blooms and seven large potted plants were allocated to the Queen’s private rooms and to decorate the city hall for the Royal Ball in Brisbane.
At 11.30am the Royal couple proceeded along Abbott Street, Minnie Street, Sheridan Street, Florence Street, and Mulgrave Road to Pease Hall, Paramatta Park. There an of ficial ceremony welcomed Her Majesty.

Reef fish were also on the menu at the State Banquet where a consignment of six coral trout and three red emperors were flown to Brisbane from Far North Queensland.

A friend and myself waited for over FOUR HOURS outside Cazalys on Sunday night-Monday morning after being told by Cairns Taxi Company, that one had been dispatched but could give no time frame: that’s ok, an hour later, we were told they had no idea where the taxi was, another hour later, we were told there was only one wheelchair taxi on that night but didn’t know its location. Another hour goes by and we were told that they knew were the taxi was, but cannot divulge that information.

To those that live and work in the area, it is no secret that Port Douglas and the surrounds has been flat out busy for the last 18 months and as a local Shuttle driver recently described to me, unlike other normal years, this time there has been no occasional break with a few weeks off for some down time. Of course, no one is complaining about this surge in popularity

I’m off to grease my sprocket, so for now it’s Gazza signing out!
What COVID ultimately did though, for Port Douglas and the rest of the Shire, was remind Australians, who could no longer travel overseas at the time, that there is a Paradise in their own backyard.
branches and any junk you find in your way. There also may be things you want to keep - maybe tree saplings, a patch of rainforest regrowth or a pile of dead logs along the edge of some bush that would make for a nice habitat. If are considering replanting, bring some large 20 litre buckets to save plants.
* Mow efficiently - To ef ficiently mow an overgrown area, consider mowing it at least twice, initially. In your first pass, raise the blades on your Toro Titan zero-turn mower to their highest level. This will allow you to avoid hitting any objects such as small boulders or large mounds of dirt that you may have missed in your walk through as your zero-turn mower slices through the weeds. If your zero-turn mower is equipped with a Toro bagging system, you can quickly scoop up cuttings and add them to your compost. Then, lower the blade level and go back through it again to achieve a finer cut.
* You’ve got options - By clearing your area of the long weeds, scrub brush and tree saplings, you’ve created more options for your yard. Do you want to remove all weeds, or do you want to overseed with grasses and native, low-growth ground covers such as clover? Maybe you’d like to turn a portion of this new green space into a large garden - for which you may

* Get ready for a bumpy ride - If your overgrown area hasn’t been touched for years, get ready for a bumpy ride due to potholes, dirt clumps, roots, decaying branches, ant hills ... you name it, that is, unless you have a Toro zero-turn mower with MyRIDE suspen sion system, an exclusive technology that cushions the ride for the mower regardless of variations in terrain.

(BPT) - There it is - a big, messy, overgrown paddock of weeds, grass, tree stumps, rocks and who knows what else, just begging for some loving. It’s an eyesore that you (and your neighbours) have been wanting to tackle for a long time, but you weren’t sure exactly how to go about it Before you run down to the hardware store to buy a wipper-snipper or call the local fire department to do a prescribed burn, the yardcare experts at Toro offer 10 tips on how to turn an overgrown field into a beautiful stretch of yard for years of enjoyment.
Tips to turn paddock into
a beautiful yard
* Consider the previous use of the paddock - Was it previ ously used as pasture for cows or horses? If so, large animals can cause quite a bit of soil compaction. Do you have bandicoot holes everywhere? That means your land will be quite lumpy after you mow it down. Understanding how your field was used before will help determine soil conditions and what you’ll be working with after you clear the weeds

imposing fields, you may want to mow a half swath at a time. Simply make a pass of untouched long weeds using only half the width of the mowing deck with the other half passing previously cut grass. This will ensure your mower blade has the power and momentum to cut through the tough stuff and ensure the grass gets cut down to the proper size.
* Start with a game plan - Is the goal to extend the green turf area of your existing lawn into this open area? Do you want to create an space where your kids and the kids in the neighbourhood could play soccer or football? Or how about turning this spot into an area where your horses, lla mas, goats or other livestock could graze. Knowing what you want to do with your new green space will help you determine how much effort
want to till that area.

* Regular mowing - Once you’ve done the hard part, you can go as fast or as slow as you want in terms of reclaiming that green space and turning it into your new ‘field of dreams’. If you plan to transform the area over time, consider aerating the soil in the autumn and begin the process of overseeding (versus sodding). The key is regular mowing to prevent weeds from growing back and reclaiming your new greenspace.
away.*Walk the paddock - Be fore you run a lawn mower through a field of tall weeds, make sure you walk it to identify any potential hazards that may not be readily vis ible. Look for rocks, stumps and logs, equipment parts and junk, potholes, nests and more. Bring some utility flags to mark any spots that you’ll need to avoid while you’re mowing.*Remove rocks, branches and junk - Grab your chain saw, throw in a shovel, and pull up the ute and trailer. It’s time to remove rocks,

Herb (James Mousa with girlfriend Steffy (Heather Baker)
Herb Tucker (James Mousa) has settled within his comfort zone and stopped trying to change his life; his writing and his relationship with his longterm girlfriend Steffy (Heather Baker) have become stagnant. However, this all changes when the daughter he left behind in New York 16 years ago, Libby (Morgan Elliston), returns to ask his father to help her get into the movies.

Members of the MSHS hope to return to the Gordonvale cemetery in 2023 for the next presentation of more of local pioneers.
I have got to admit, I am a sucker for family stories and the classic father-daughter tale, but I Ought To Be in Pictures directed by Narelle Shorey, made me fall in love with it all over again, with a funny and heart-warming story of love and estrangement that went to common places without being a cliché.Struggling screenwriter

The chemistry between Elliston and Mousa on stage made for a compelling and believable story that was entertaining and humorous
By Maria Larkins
The introduction to trail blazing daughter Libby is charming and hilarious; the interpretation Morgan Elliston gave to the role was beautiful with those nuances of youth and the humour behind the tragedy of her story.
but always so full of love and sadness and all of those little details that make families... well,Thefamilies.waythe play takes us through the perspectives of the child abandoned by her father and the father who decided to leave his family and never look back makes for a nonjudgmental and compassionate narration. I Ought To Be in Pictures aims not to demonise one another but to feel for their loss, grief and ultimately, the joy, challenges and lessons of their reunion.
If you are looking to laugh, maybe even cry a little and re late to the fears and challenges of ordinary people, Narelle Shorey’s I Ought To Be in Pictures is the play for you. It has memorable one-liners, re latable and lovable characters, a beautiful set and tells a story about a family’s complexities.

Mousa and Baker were amazing, my heart goes to Elliston and her superb interpretation of Libby, which was so youthful, hilarious, and raw. She captured those feel ings of growing up, not feeling at home within yourself, and feeling everything so intensely.

THE season’s final day is this weekend, with the 2022 Cairns Colonial Club and Resort Grand Finals taking place at Endeavour Park.Once again, Edge Hill Tigers and Leichhardt Lions face each other in the finals. Although these rivals are no strangers to each other, they know each other on the field, and their desire to win will make for an exciting match.
“Things are looking good; we’re looking forward to it,” Ward said.
“We know all their players, their strengths, their weaknesses, and the same goes for them, which can make for a very exciting game.“Mentality is a big factor for us; it’s hard not to fall into that comfortable trap where we think – if everything goes normal, we should be alright; the girls need to be prepared as if we don’t know what this team has put on the line.”
