AUSTRALIANS throw a staggering 26.8 million toys in the bin every year as options for recycling toys are scarce, with the majority not being kerbside recyclable.

To help combat these figures, BIG W has expanded its successful ‘Toys for Joy’ program to BIG W in Cairns and 176 stores nationally after the initiative saw over 18 tonnes of old toys collected in its first year of trial operations.

Facilitated by recycling partner TerraCycle, BIG W’s ‘Toys for Joy’ is the first of its kind toy recycling program in Australia.

Managing Director of BIG W, Pejman Okhovat, said the program aims to reduce the number of toys that find their way into landfills by giving parents and carers an easy and accessible

disposal alternative at their local BIG W store.

“We know as kids grow older, they grow out of their toys and Toys For Joy provides parents peace of mind knowing that as they declutter, they are disposing of old toys in a manner that helps to reduce landfill,” Mr Okhovat said.

“The program has been resonating with families, evidenced by the collection of more than 18 tonnes of waste sent to TerraCycle for recycling so far.”

“We are committed to reducing landfill and helping to make new, fun things for kids and communities to enjoy.

“We look forward to making an even greater difference now the program has a national footprint.”

General Manager of TerraCycle Australia Jean Bailliard praised BIG W for providing an in-store recycling solution for parents.

“It’s fantastic to be involved in a project such as ‘Toys for Joy’ that gives end-of-life toys a second life,” Ms Bailliard.

“The program not only saves worn-out toys from landfill, but our recycling process also takes complex materials like metal, rubber and a variety of plastics and turns them into new materials for reuse.”

Federal Minister for the Environment, Sussan Ley, said initiatives like ‘Toys for Joy’ created an opportunity to reach the national waste targets.

“Initiatives like Toys for Joy are another step in helping

change the national conversation about recycling and our traditional ‘throw away’ culture,” Minister Ley said.

“Everyone has the opportunity to help achieve our national waste targets and protect our environment, and I congratulate BIG W, who are certainly playing their part in this.”

Customers can drop pre-loved toys into the purpose-built ‘Toys for Joy’ chest, which locals can find at the front of BIG W in Stockland Shopping Centre. BIG W cannot accept books, playdough and slime, pens, pencils, crayons or paintbrushes, wooden toys, board games, batteries or oversized toys. Cairns local celebrates 100th birthday

By Isabella Guzman Gonzalez ELDERLY resident at the Infin8 Care Orchards, Edge Hill, May Johnson, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 16, surrounded by five generations of her family, residents and staff at the aged care residence.

The event had live music, food, a beautiful cake and the company of family, residents and staff who were excited to celebrate such an achievement with Ms Johnson.

Granddaughter Stephanie Rogers said that Ms Johnson had touched the lives of five generations within the family.

“She’s just the best, she’s been there since we were tiny, and through everything in our lives, my kids’ lives, my grandkids’ lives, she means everything to us,” Ms Rogers said.

Ms Johnson led a very active life; born on May 16, 1922, she lived in Sydney most of her life and was married for over 50 years. In her youth, she enjoyed playing tennis and water skiing, and she worked for the Australian Government supporting refugees who had just arrived in the country.

May Johnson said that she did not expect such a big celebration for turning 100.

“I never thought about getting to 100; nobody ever does,” she said.

“But I’m pleased to see my family here with me.”

Ms Johnson reminisced on a long life well-lived.

“I’ve lived a long life, but I’ve been well looked after in all that time,” she said.

“And the kids are so good to me.

“I can’t believe I have grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“We went through a couple of wars, a couple of epidemics.

“But I’ve never had a reason to be unhappy because I’ve made many friends throughout the

years; I’ve been well looked after wherever I’ve been and got nothing to be unhappy about.”

Ms Rogers said they look forward to many more birthday celebrations with Nana.

“She’s just wonderful; she has this cheeky sense of humour, loves having banter and jokes with people to keep her mind sharp,” she said.

“She’s just been there for all of us; she’s seen five generations be born, and the kids are everything to her; seeing them running and playing keeps her young.

“So I just wish her many more years to come.”

ON Thursday, May 12, the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Services (CHHHS) celebrated International Nurses Day with their third annual Nurse of the Year and Midwife of the Year Award to honour their hard and selfless job over critical moments like the COVID-19 crisis.

This year’s Nurse of the Year Award winner was Cairns Hospital’s Older Persons Nurse of the Evaluation Year Hayley RehabilitaEvans is most passionate tion and about working Assessment with elderly patients Ward (OPERA) intake referral clinical nurse, Hayley Evans.

Nurse Evans was nominated and voted by her colleagues for her passion, commitment and love for her craft; she has been a nurse for 18 years and 15 of those have been in the Cairns Hospital.

Ms Evans said she was surprised when she found out she was the recipient of the Award.

“It’s an honour; I was blown away and overwhelmed,” she said.

“I’m currently working on the OPERA, which I love and enjoy, so I’m really honoured to be nominated by my peers and let alone win.”

For over eight years, Ms Evans has been working with older people at the OPERA ward, which has been her life’s dream

and where her co-workers recognise her excellence and passion for supporting the elderly.

“What I love about my job is that it’s not always easy but is always worth it,” she said.

“Being able to honour and value older people is what drives me.

“It’s important that, as a society, we recognise them; older people built the foundations of this country, so it’s crucial to show them their value and look after them well in the health sector.”

Ms Evans also highlighted the magnificent work that all nurses have done throughout the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think the world has seen nursing shift in the last two years from what our role used to be to what it is now with all the things that entails like not being able to have visitors, which is so important, especially to our older patients,” she said.

“What I saw during that time is the phenomenal teamwork.

“If you think about a car, it can’t move if it doesn’t have wheels, a steering wheel, and an engine, and I saw that through the hospital, everyone brings something to the table.

“And I just saw a real coming-together of colleagues which become your friends, your family; you work long hours together, you have to trust

each other, and I’ve seen some really positive outcomes in what could’ve been a hard time.”

CHHHS Acting Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Mark Goodman said it was crucial to celebrate our nurses and the excellent and challenging job they do every day.

“It’s a great opportunity for nurses and midwives to pause, reflect, and celebrate upon their achievements across time, particularly through these last couple of years dealing with the pandemic,” Mr Goodman said.

“Hayley was nominated by her peers for her commitment, her empathy with patients and staff and provision of excellent service within OPERA. “Wendy Hilless is our Midwife of the Year; her colleagues also recognise her for her leadership within the Midwifery practice, breastfeeding policies and her baby-friendly initiative at the Mareeba Hospital.”

Nurse Evans wants to continue to work with the elderly for many years to come, and she hopes that the future brings many improvements to aged care and the health industry.

“I’m excited to see how our aged care system is progressing and moving forward in recognising the need for care out in the community and in hospital,” she said.

“I think easier access to care for our elderly, more options available for them to go home instead of residential aged care prematurely would be good steps in the future.”

HE Tourism Tropical North Queensland team joined forces with more than 70 products to sell Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef at the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) in Sydney from Sunday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 18.

The largest tourism trade show in the southern hemisphere, the hybrid event was held live with more than 1,000 international travel trade buyers and Australian product representatives at the Sydney International Convention Centre on May 15-18 and online with some 1,200 Australian products and international buyers on May 24-26.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen and Chair Ken Chapman plus TTNQ’s four marketing team members attended the event to meet with travel wholesalers, online travel agents, inbound tour operators, international travel agents specialising in Australian travel, Tourism Australia, and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Mr Olsen said Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef had traditionally been the largest contingent at ATE before the pandemic, and it was pleasing to see such substantial numbers representing the destination once again.

“Operators from Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef have been itching to get in front of the international tourism trade once again, and ATE is their first chance in three years to have face-to-face meetings with these important buyers,” he said.

“It is a very intense business event with our industry arriving on Sunday ready for 75 appointments across two and a half days.

“Each appointment is just 13 minutes in duration, and then they move on to the next buyer to update them on new products, itineraries and packages.

“In between, there are networking events where there is time to talk in-depth with key international contacts wanting to bring travellers to the Great Barrier Reef and the world’s oldest rainforest.

“Nearly all the Western market representatives will be there in person, and we have a strong contingent from Japan, while the Chinese meetings will mostly be online.

HE Federal Election is tomorrow, early voting began on May 9, and many voters are still unsure who would be the best fit for the Kennedy division.

As the race gets closer to the end, there is so much noise, bickering from party to party, and so many plans and policies that it becomes almost impossible to make rational and informed decisions.

The Kennedy division covers an area of approximately 567,377 square kms, and some of the main

councils it includes are Cassowary Coast, Mt Isa, Tablelands, Croydon, Yarrabah, part of Cairns, part of Mareeba, part of Townsville and more. Currently, KAP candidate Bob Katter holds the seat for the electorate and has done so for 29 years.

At Cairns Local News, we reached out to all the Kennedy candidates and asked them what they think the electorate needs more urgently, how they plan to address these issues and how they will make a difference for you, the voters. So grab a cuppa and get to know a little more about this election’s contenders.

ABOUT I have a combination of experience in my career to fulfil the role as a federal member of parliament. I was a Heavy and Commercial Vehicle Mechanic by trade, with 30 years of experience in the transport industry at different levels, Deputy Mayor of Cassowary Coast Regional Council and Chairman of a Board of Directors. Certainly not a career politician.

WHAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE TO ADDRESS IN YOUR ELECTORATE? There is no single main issue across Kennedy.

The common themes have mainly to do with Housing, Roads, Digital Connectivity and Cost of Living being the main issues.

HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS ISSUE? The best way to address these issues is to engage with the people who know the real problems.

During my campaign, I have been talking to people at the forefront of these issues.

I will be the conduit and representative for the voices in Canberra.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOUR VOTERS AND THE PEOPLE OF KENNEDY? By being a member of a team that understands the people on the ground.

I already have an established network of people in Canberra and understand how the process works.

I can only represent the people of Kennedy at the highest level if I am in Canberra fighting for them.

JASON BRANDON AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY

ABOUT I live in Mount Isa with my wife, three-year-old daughter, and 6-month-old son. I’m involved in the community through my soccer club and as Vice President of the Mount Isa Agricultural Show Society.

WHAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE TO ADDRESS IN YOUR ELECTORATE? Healthcare accessibility and affordability are major issues across regional Queensland.

HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS ISSUE? My priority will be to get more GPs to work in the region.

An Albanese government will change the rules to make it easier for regional communities to recruit more doctors of their choosing – both locals and overseas trained GPs. We’ll also invest in Telehealth services, Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and make it easier for people in regional areas to get their education in places like Cairns.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOUR VOTERS AND THE PEOPLE OF KENNEDY? I won’t just talk the talk; I’ll walk the walk. I’ll help deliver a better future for the region.

I’ll listen to the community, fight for what’s best for regional Queensland, and be a voice for Kennedy in Parliament.

ABOUT I have an obligation to help the people and I know that the Kennedy electorate could have been better represented and serviced by a true independent with the ability to achieve outcomes, not just promises.

WHAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE TO ADDRESS IN YOUR ELECTORATE? Cost of living for North Queenslanders, driven by supply and demand of everyday living.

This is underpinned by the cost of oil and our over reliance on external trade partners. We need to keep the excise tax in check longer than the six months both major parties are suggesting.

HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS ISSUE? Our democracy rests on integrity, and so as an independent I am confident I can take the many economic and social issues Kennedy is faced with, to every level, while not having to toe a party line.

Having spent years at the table with many politicians it is very unsettling that some politicians are capable of acts that are so close to fraud.

HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOUR VOTERS AND THE PEOPLE OF KENNEDY? The integrity of parliament must be restored and the people’s trust be regained if we are to again operate as a truly democratic society.

ABOUT I am a local Tabelander that grew up here. After studying and gaining experience in Marketing and Advertising, I returned with my family and now own a local Digital Marketing business. I am running because I want a fairer future for all of us.

WHAT IS THE MAIN ISSUE TO ADDRESS IN YOUR ELECTORATE? Everywhere I go, people talk about the housing crisis.

The Greens have a plan to build a million affordable houses over 20 years and use a billionaire wealth tax and corporate super profits tax to pay for it.

For too long, there has been no concerted effort to build public housing - in a rich country like Australia, everyone should have a roof over their heads.

HOW WILL YOU ADDRESS THIS ISSUE? We only need a small increase in the vote to win the balance of power and push the new government to act on climate and the housing crisis.

Our Senate candidate Penny Allman-Payne also has a good chance of getting elected, and as a woman who grew up in Cairns, she will be a strong regional voice for NQ. HOW WILL YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR YOUR VOTERS AND THE PEOPLE OF KENNEDY? The Greens do not take corporate donations. That means I will not be beholden to corporate interests and can make legislation that helps the everyday Australian rather than catering to corporate donors.

With the Edmonton Traders (Fran Lindsay and Peter Piccone) and Brett Moller from the Gordonvale Chamber, we secured nearly $2,000m for a divided highway between Cairns and Gordonvale.

On July 1, the reinsurance pool for Nothern Australia will commence, secured with the work of the Hinchinbrook and Townsville Chambers of Commerce, North Qld Insurance Brokers and George Christensen MP.

By Isabella Guzman Gonzalez THE housing crisis in the Cairns region has exponentially worsened in the last year, with families at risk of homelessness having to wait an average of 25 months to secure social housing.

Organisations like Vinnies Queensland are in a desperate position with local clients coming to the charity looking for housing and having no alternatives to offer them.

Vinnies FNQ Executive Officer David Monaghan said the situation was extremely concerning.

“We are running out of options,” Mr Monaghan said.

“Crisis accommodation centres are full, affordable accommodation is next to impossible to find, and the waiting list for social housing is growing by the day.

“The average rental vacancy dropped to 0.7%.

“We’ve also got 10,100 people in FNQ that are in rental stress; that means that they’re paying over 30% of their income in rent.

‘And rental prices have increased 7.3% over the last 12 months, so that’s costing them an additional $30, and it weighs heavily on their income.

“The average waiting time for social housing is 25 months; that’s over two years to wait for social housing.

“We need to call for Federal, State and Local Governments to work together on a national housing strategy to address this crisis urgently,” he said.

Mr Monaghan said that it is heartbreaking to see local families struggling and not being able to find accommodation for them.

“There’ve been significant increases over the last two years in the use of our services,” he said.

“Families coming to us that are so in need, they have no home, they’re living in tents.

“We’re going out and buying tents and sleeping bags for them.

“They’re in appalling conditions; they’re sleeping in cars.

“We’re trying to help them the best that we can, but it’s such an increasing problem; we’re providing food vouchers to keep them going week to week, but something needs to be done to help these people before it worsens.”

Many elements contribute to the housing crisis; some of them are the lack of rentals available in the market, not enough homes added to social housing, lower-income houses having to compete in the rental market, and an increase in visitors to the area means an increase in rentals and less accommodation available.

“There is a lack of housing up for rental,” Mr Monaghan said.

“Landlords can almost ask

their own price to a certain extent, so fewer people can afford accommodation.”

Organisations like Vinnies call on the Government for immediate relief and long-term actions to help families at risk of homelessness in the region.

“We need significant investment into building new social housing,” Mr Monaghan said.

“At least 5,000 dwellings a year in Queensland.

“We’re also looking at the Commonwealth Rental Assistance supplement to increase by 50%.

“That will help vulnerable Queenslanders keep their rentals amid growing rent prices and cost of living increases.

“That’s about $75 per fortnight increase, and I think that would go a long way in the short term to help these people, at least the ones that are renting at the moment, not losing their homes.”

Mr Monaghan asked all branches of government for prompt action to prevent more people from going into homelessness.

“80% of Australians believe that no one should live in poverty; it’s as simple as that,” he said.

“We need to help these people rise above the poverty line and be able to have a lifestyle in dignity.”

WELCOME LABOR’S COMMITMENT TO TH E GREAT BARRIER REE F

LABOR’S announcement that, if elected, it will invest $1.2bn in projects that will tackle threats to the Great Barrier Reef and provide additional funds for endangered wildlife is welcome, the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) said.

AMCS also welcomed Labor’s pledge, reported in media, to establish a national threatened species program and respond to an independent review of the national environment laws if elected on May 21.

The announcement includes upfront funding of $194.5m across the next three years dedicated to Reef protection programs to help support the resilience of our Reef as it suffers from repeated heatwaves driven primarily by the burning of fossil fuels.

AMCS CEO Darren Kindleysides said this decade was critical for the Reef and the communities that rely on it.

“With our Reef having just suffered through its fourth mass bleaching event since 2016, we welcome this investment in tackling local threats to build our Reef’s resilience to global

heating,” Mr Kindleysides said.

“Water pollution is devastating for inshore areas of the Reef, including coastal ecosystems like seagrasses, mangroves and inshore corals, further impacting the iconic marine wildlife like dugongs and turtles which depend on these habitats.

“Given the slow progress in addressing water pollution to date, its vital funding is directed towards the highest risk catchments.

“We welcome that funding would support work with farmers on more efficient fertiliser use, catchment and wetland restoration, gully repair and addressing erosion and sediment pollution.”

Labor is also committed to ensuring a sustainable fishing sector, with protection for iconic Reef species like dugongs, turtles and dolphins from accidental capture and illegal fishing.

In late January, the Coalition government committed to investing $1bn in the Reef across nine years, with over half allocated to tackling water pollution.

Labor’s commitment

amounts to $1.2bn until 2030.

The Greens have pledged $2bn for water quality over ten years.

These welcome commitments still fall short of the estimated $4bn needed to meet the 2025 water quality targets both the Australian and Queensland governments have agreed to.

“The parties’ funding commitments are recognition that the future of our Reef is an important issue for Australian voters,” Mr Kindleysides said.

“Investment in both local threats and stronger action to tackle the climate crisis are both essential if we are to ensure the Reef remains for many generations to come.”

AMCS is looking forward to more details on Labor’s commitment to spending $224.5m over the forward estimates for a national threatened species program to address a backlog of around 200 species recovery plans and how it will help marine wildlife facing the extinction crisis.

The next term of government must urgently strengthen Australia’s environmental laws.

FREE LUNG SCREENINGS

FOR FORMER AND RETIRED RESOURCE WORKERS IN CAIRNS HEART of Australia, the first mobile medical program for regional and remote Queensland communities, will bring its world-first, innovative mobile medical imaging clinic – HEART 5 – to Cairns to provide free lung screening for former and retired resource workers in the region.

From May 23 to 25, the first-of-its-kind HEART 5 truck will be heading to the Cairns Showgrounds as part of its initiative with the Queensland Government and Resources Safety and Health Queensland.

The fifth truck in the Heart of Australia fleet is equipped with the world’s first batteryoperated mobile CT scanner and X-ray equipment to assist in the screening and early detection of mine lung dust diseases such as black lung and silicosis.

Head of Operations Ewan Wylie said he is thrilled to have the opportunity to offer the clinic to the Cairns region and break the barriers of distance so that more Queenslanders can access the quality healthcare they need.

“We are thrilled that we can bring this service to the community of Cairns,” Mr Wylie said.

“Retired mine and quarry workers exposed to hazardous dust like silica and coal

during their employment often develop mine dust lung disease later in life, typically in their 60s and 70s.

“So we must have screening programs to look after workers when they’re in the workplace and after they leave the workplace.

“We know that early detection of lung disease leads to better health outcomes, so we encourage former and retired resource workers to come forward to access this free service.”

The screening process within the HEART 5 truck involves a chest X-Ray and spirometry test and a follow up consult with a physician experienced in mine dust lung disease.

“The unique thing about our truck is we’re also available to do the lung function test, and high-resolution CT scans needed to confirm the diagnosis,” Mr Wylie said.

“Heart of Australia focuses

on supporting and improving the quality of life of those living in rural and remote Australia; that’s where our mobile clinics bring medicine to the people, so we want to encourage Cairns residents to participate and get a lung screening.”

Now with five mobile medical clinics on the road, Heart of Australia can provide improved access to specialist medical services and support the work of local GPs in 33 remote and regional Queensland communities – from Goondiwindi in the south to Weipa in the far north and Winton in the west.

Appointment slots are now open for former and retired resource workers in the Cairns region to visit the showgrounds and get their free lung screening between May 23-25.

It bans the export of oil banned, reprocess metropolitan waste into diesel (pyrolysis) (Germany WW2), all “govt” cars and their component parts in metropolitan cities, shall be electric and made in Australia by majority Australian owned companies, and all busses (already being made in Australia, by Australians), and renewables such as algae, diesel, ethanol and invasive species timber If they embargo our fuel (as was done to other countries in WW1 and WW2), we have realistically three days fuel supplies. The LNP picking a fight with China when we only have 36,000 rifles in the country is unbelievable. In the late 60s when we were at war with Vietnam, we had 1.5 million semi automatic rifles. They tell us they have 20 patrol boats built or being built, each fitted with a machine gun on it (Won't that scare China). $1.5b spent on 20 machine guns which cost about $10k each. We couldn’t defend ourselves from a flock of pigeons. Let alone China. Each of those patrol boats should have been built with 40 missiles on each of them.

We are a country of enormous wealth, worth defending and we shall have every young man standing to defend his country, a missile fortress wall around our island, and we shall kick China and every other foreign country out of essential services. They shall be owned by the Australian people and not some slithering snake superannuation Sydney corporation.

There is a massive mark-up (over 200%) on the price supermarkets charge and the price they give farmers All farmers want is a fair go.

Cost of production has skyrocketed. Farmers are being ripped off and mum and dad shoppers are being ripped off. Greedy corporate fat cats are licking their paws and laughing. The LNP and ALP need to stop pandering to needs of big multinationals and start helping farmers and consumers. We will look to open new markets for our fruit and vegetable growers and graziers so that their produce isn't going to waste. Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia are all on our doorstep and should be prioritised.

The spirit of Australia will prevail.

70 Years of Unconditional Love

“I take you to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part.”

These are the iconic lines of the traditional wedding vows that we’ve heard hundreds of times in movies. Still, sometimes we forget that past the cliché, there are stories of true love and people who live these vows with intensity, stories like Cairns residents Enid’s and Mick Reed.

They were meant to be, they belonged to each other; that’s how Enid Reed describes her 70-year love story.

Enid and Mick were both born in 1933 in the UK. Enid was from Yorkshire, and Mick was from Berkshire. In 1949, at age 16, Mick would put a classified in a magazine that would change his life forever. He was looking for a pen pal.

Mick put the ad up, and by Friday, he had received hundreds of letters; on Saturday, he only received one: Enid’s.

“It was me!” said Enid while laughing.

“He had 100 letters one day and just one on Saturday, which was me replying to his advert, so he picked me.”

They went on to write to each other for two years. Enid was a telephonist at the

post office, and Mick had joined the Merchant Navy after dropping out of school.

Countless letters were sent back and forth over the years, and they fell in love.

In 1951 Mick decided to surprise Enid; one day, he showed up at her door at 11:30 pm after taking the last bus.

“I was putting curlers in my hair before work the next day, and he came at the door and stood there outside,” Enid said.

“That was the first time I met him, with curlers in my hair.”

The risky move paid off; Enid’s parents loved Mick, and he stayed the night.

The next day Mick departed to Liverpool with the navy, and once he came back, they quickly got married.

In 1952, at age 19, Mick and Enid got married. On May 31, they will be celebrating their 70th anniversary.

When did you know you wanted to marry each other? I asked Mick.

“We just knew,” said Mick with conviction.

They got married on a rainy Saturday afternoon on May 31, 1952; Enid said she could not remember much about the day, but Mick recalls getting cold feet.

“I didn’t want to get married,” said Mick.

“He said to his landlady, “I’m not going”,” said Enid.

Mick’s brother managed to calm him down and told him to put his tie on and get going. And they did. They got married at the Congregational Church in Halifax.

Since then, many things have changed; they started a big family (six children, ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren), moved to Australia in 1973 and by 2006, got to Cairns and travelled around the world until Mick’s health declined.

Mick survived two heart attacks and two strokes; although his mind fully recovered, he cannot walk anymore and has trouble speaking.

Enid has been with him every step of his recovery; she understands him even when other people cannot; he cracks jokes, and she laughs.

“I think we were destined to be together,” she said.

“People these days, they give up too easily.

“We’re taking care of each other, aren’t we?” she asked Mick.

“Of course,” replied Mick.

“After 70 years, we still have the same interests we had then,” she said.

“And through it all, he has kept his amazing sense of humour.

“He could’ve given up, but he’s still here with me.”

They hold hands; Enid smiles at Mick; they decide to go for a ride the next day and soak up the sun. They don’t say it, but there is so much love in every word and every action, 70 years of unconditional love.

For their 60th anniversary, they renewed their vows and had a big celebration with all their family. They received a letter from the Queen and the Governor.

Enid recalls that their 65th anniversary was extra special.

“For our 65th anniversary, we went to Palm Cove to be on our own,” she said.

“It was the last anniversary where we took a trip; we can’t do it anymore.”

Enid said that after 70 years and despite all the struggles, their relationship is as strong as ever, and it will continue to be that way until the end.

Will it be at the expense of those on the waiting list?

Where will they live when Australians have been waiting for years for a home?

In particular I worry about all the homeless currently living on the streets and wonder how we can extend help to foreign nationals yet ignore the plight of our own Citizens? It seems hypocritical in the extreme.

I get angry and sad when I see charities raising money to buy swags for homeless people living on the streets! Are you kidding me? Is this a third world country? Is this the best we can offer for Citizens doing it tough?

My belief is that the State

Governments and the Federal Governments need to step up and solve this problem right NOW! Why not build small 1 bed units to be allocated for all homeless people (2 bed for families) and deduct a portion of their dole money to pay a fair rental price.

It should be a compulsory deduction until they can get their own home. After all they need to take some responsibility, then there is no excuse for being homeless in a First World Country.

Sure they won’t have as much to spend on other things but having a roof over their head is paramount.

I also believe training should be given to keep the place clean, financial counselling and other counselling should also be available.

To solve the agriculture problem Dongas could be provided for those willing to live and work on farms in season.

They could incorporate a community games room, Gym and a Community garden to grow some fresh foods. Any surplus foods (like avocadoes currently being bulldozed), could be donated to a community kitchen. To help with the escalating cost of living.

I think it would be a worthwhile project for any Government for how can someone progress when they are living in poverty and danger on the streets? How can they even attend interviews when they have

Crystal Cascades closure Public access to Crystal Cascades will be closed from 4am on Tuesday 24 May to 5pm on Wednesday 25 May to allow for necessary valve and pipe replacement works to be undertaken.

Water supply will not be affected by the works.

The valve being replaced is a critical piece of infrastructure that controls the flow of water to Freshwater Treatment Plant and environmental flows to Freshwater Creek.

Council will also replace associated pipework and the existing flowmeter, which are ageing and showing signs of deterioration.

A second two-day closure will be required from 4am on Tuesday 14 June to 5pm on Wednesday 15 June for the works to be completed. More information on the “Works in progress” section on Council’s website.

DISPOSE OF GREEN WASTE FOR FREE Cairns Regional Council’s second free green waste disposal of the year starts this weekend.

Acting Mayor Terry James said it was the perfect opportunity to clean up overgrown yards.

“We have had an extended wet season this year, so undoubtedly some yards would be in need of a clean-up,” Cr James said.

“Giving the garden a good trim and clearing out excessive vegetation is important in promoting fresh growth and maintaining a healthy and safe environment for the family.

“It is also important that garden waste is disposed of correctly.

“Dumping green waste in drains or areas where it can be washed into drains can cause blockages that can lead to flooding during heavy rain.”

This month’s free green waste disposal is from Saturday, May 21 to Sunday, May 29.

Two more free disposal periods are scheduled for later in the year: August 20-28 and November 19-27.

Residents taking advantage of this month’s free green waste disposal period are encouraged to make a voluntary gold coin donation at the waste transfer station, which will support FNQ Wildlife Rescue.

IMPACT OF PANDEMIC ON THE ARTS REVEALED An annual review of the Cairns Strategy for Culture and the Arts 2022 tabled at Council on Wednesday revealed substantial opportunities for ongoing growth as the region recovers from the impacts of COVID-19.

The report, which focused on the strategy’s third year, revealed over 60% of proposed actions in the 2020/21 financial year were completed, and high levels of engagement were achieved, despite significant disruptions due to the pandemic.

Active participation, audience numbers and employment opportunities were lower in 2020/21 compared to 2019/20, reflecting the impact of COVID-19, which led to the closure of Council facilities and cancellation of suspension of shows and programs.

Most notably, data from the 2019/20 report incorporated Cairns Festival figures, including 87,000 attendees, which

was cancelled in the 2020/21 financial year.

The fight for the seat of Leichhardt is in full swing with United Australia Party founder Clive Palmer flying into Cairns to throw his support behind local candidate Daniel Hannagan, Tuesday.

Amid the Party’s policies and promises, like introducing a 20% tax reduction for regional centres, Mr Hannagan revealed that about two-thirds of his election signs had been stolen.

Mr Hannagan said of the 900 election corflutes purchased, 600 of them had been stolen and were ending up in the region’s waterways.

Stealing election signage is an underhanded yet common practice amongst many political rivals, but for Mr Hannagan, one of Cairns’ most passionate environmental campaigners, it is personal.

“The worst thing for me is I’ve actually organised for everyone who wants to get their corflutes recycled, and they’re throwing them in creeks,” said Mr Hannagan.

“If you’re anti a party for some silly reason and you throw them in a creek, we can’t recycle the thing.

“And it’s not just kids doing this, we actually have footage of people driving Teslas doing this.

“So please, if you have stolen the signs can you bring them back to us so we can recycle them.”

The serious message gave way to some light-heartedness when Mr Hannagan was asked why he thought he was being targeted so fiercely.

“I think people want to remember this election and my win so they’re taking my pictures home so they can have a memento of this great occasion, and hopefully they’ll bring them to me in office, and I can sign them for them.” he joked.

Mr Hannagan is a fifthgeneration Leichhardt local - his connection to the region beginning in 1898 with his great-grandmother’s birth on Thursday Island.

He specializes in finding sustainable solutions in today’s throwaway society, with the story of his success featured on the ABC’s “War on Waste” program.

Gazza’s Gossip P&C TRIVIA NIGHT…

HE Mossman State School P&C is holding their KStar Trivia Night next Friday, May 27 which, apart from being an evening of family fun, will be an important fund raiser.

I’ll give you details shortly, but thought it would be an opportune time to showcase the P&C role and highlight some of the amazing volunteers who ensure students receive a quality education and facilities.

Firstly, there’s the uniform shop run by Hayley Bender which provides convenient service for local families. They are constantly trying to improve the look of the students such as the recently revamped uniform, plus the introduction of their popular bama design sports shirts.

Then there is the exceptionally well organised tuckshop proudly run by Miss Sally and Miss Jodi, open three days a week. They recently received a five-star Apple Rating from the Healthy Eats Program, achieved by having so many healthy and fun lunch options

for both students and staff, including sushi bowls, tacos and salads. The tuckshop has also recently undergone a huge renovation.

One key task of the Mossman State School P&C is fundraising as although grants are often applied for, success is never guaranteed. One current project is building a new junior playground for the Preps to Year 2’s to enjoy. The existing playground is dilapidated and they are keen to provide the best for their hard-working students. The team are also hoping to upgrade their technology resources as the school population has vastly grown over the last five years from 205 in 2017 to 319 students today. While this is an amazing achievement, it does put pressure on resources, so the P&C wants to alleviate some of these issues.

Back to next Friday’s KStar Trivia Night on May 27 to be held at Mossman Shire Hall from 6:00pm. The whole community is encouraged to get behind their ever-growing

school and to enjoy a night of trivia, plus great food. To compliment the night further, there will be huge auction packs as well as awesome raffle prizes courtesy of incredible local businesses that have made the night possible.

HILDREN from Years 3 to 10 are being encouraged to imagine the future and develop computer skills while creating games, apps, animations or websites in the Premier’s Coding Challenge 2022.

The theme for this year’s challenge is #digitalfuturesqld and students are being asked to address a range of topics including careers, education, medical care, transport, entertainment, sustainability, security and privacy, and social media.

They can focus on subjects such as artificial intelligence, global communication, virtual learning environments, self-driving cars, new medical technology, new entertainment options

and devices, digital footprints, cyber bullying, and netiquette protocols.

Each entry needs to comprise a digital solution and a video explaining the digital solution.

There are two sections with four categories in each.

Primary: Years 3 & 4 – Scratch or Open Platform; Years 5 & 6 – Scratch or Open Platform. Secondary: Years 7 & 8 – Python/HTML or Open Platform; Years 9 & 10 – Python/ HTML or Open Platform.

Teachers interested in supporting students can access curriculum and digital wellbeing resources to create lesson plans and assessments under the Tools and Tips section for Teachers.

Camp Quality puppets share the stage with Matilda and Pamela at St Joseph’s School.

By Maria Larkins YOUNG MATILDA Barnes has been helping her mum fight against a horrible disease with hugs and kisses.

When Pamela Campusano Vallejos, was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer, she was concerned how her young daughter would cope.

“We were very honest with Matilda from day one. We told her, it’s a terrible disease, but we can fight it. We told her that cancer hates kisses and hugs. We said every time she gave me kisses and hugs, that she was helping me to fight cancer. She took it very seriously!,” Pamela said.

Worried that her daughter could be adversely affected, she was relieved when staff at St Joseph’s School in Paramatta Park, agreed to monitor Matilda for any signs of stress.

But the brave mum, armed with lots of hugs and kisses, still wanted to ensure the youngster had enough help and resources.

When Pamela’s cancer nurse told her about the Camp Quality school program, she worked with St Joseph’s School to arrange for the Camp Quality Puppets to visit.

In support of the event, the school hosted a casual-dress day to raise funds for the charity.

The puppets presented a fun, interactive and educational show

to dispel myths about cancer and help create an inclusive and supportive community for children who have been diagnosed with cancer, or who have a parent or sibling undergoing cancer treatment.

Pamela said it was good to see how engaged the children were with the performance.

“It felt really good to be able to give something back to the school and also provide really valuable resources for kids about cancer,” she said.

Now in recovery, the young mum said it was important to raise awareness of the disease and for all women to check their breasts regularly.

FUNDING GREEN LIGHT FOR STP AND DREDGING PROJECTS

Port Hinchinbrook STP

Residents, businesses and visitors to Cardwell and Port Hinchinbrook are welcoming the news that funding agreements for One Mile Creek dredging and Port Hinchinbrook Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) have been executed.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said it had taken a lot of hard work with strong community advocation and all levels of government working together towards this positive outcome.

“Our community emphatically told Council that this was a key priority for residents and I’m proud to announce that funding agreements have

been executed.

“We understand that the marine, tourism and recreational industries and the people who work in these industries depend on access to our waterways. Providing a navigable channel is also important to residents and visitors to our waterside communities; our stunning beaches, the Great Barrier Reef and nearby islands which are a major drawcard for our tourism market.”

Councillor Nolan said that the execution of the funding agreement with the Australian Government for $1.5 million, allows Council to progress a procurement process for the emergency dredging of One Mile Creek.

Once completed, the emergency dredging will create opportunities for recreational and commercial users alike and have flow on effects to the local economy.

The navigable channel will also improve safety for marine users and support the local volunteer Coast Guard.

In further good news, formal agreements have been finalised for the funding required for upgrading the Port Hinchinbrook STP. With numerous failures of the estates ageing STP and associated infrastructure, this matter has been critical to resolve as releases to the environment had the very real potential to impact on

public health and the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

“Council has signed an agreement with the Australian Government for $6 million in funding for the STP. The total cost for this project is $14.25 million with the Queensland Government also providing $6.3 million.

The project will see a new STP built to replace the current failing system as well as renewal of some pump station and effluent infrastructure, culverts and road assets.

“Council staff are working behind the scenes to progress with the design phase.

The current schedule aims to have the design

fast tracked with preliminary designs complete by the end of July 2022, and tenders called in August 2022.

“I thank the community for working with Council and both the Queensland and Australian Government for helping progress these critical projects, Council hope this lasting solution will provide confidence for future private investment in this iconic development.

This project is a perfect of example of walking together in terms of one community and one region,” Councillor Nolan said.

BMX Pump Track, Nature Playground, Wetlands and more Car Parking are part of the future of the Warrina Lakes Community Parkland.

At the April Local Government Meeting, Council endorsed the Warrina Lakes Strategic Master Plan (the Plan).

Planning and Regional Development Portfolio Holder, Councillor Nick Pervan said the Plan provides a vision that establishes the priorities and strategic direction for projects within the Warrina Lakes facil-

ity over the next 10 years.

“The Warrina Lakes Community Parkland is an important community asset from both a recreational and cultural perspective.

“The works will raise the profile of the Parklands and increase patronage with the masterplan providing a multifaceted space that can be enjoyed by locals and visitors to the region.

“The wetland project will have significant environmental benefits, and will assist in increasing water quality within

the catchment and provide habitat for a number of bird and fish species.

“I am most excited for the BMX pump track and nature playground which will complement the highly successful mini rail and provide new activities for our youth,” said Councillor Pervan.

A number of existing attractions and facilities are proposed to be retained, such as the historic covered shed, mini rail, Anzac Avenue and the Mamu Bush Tucker Garden.

Proposed improvement works include: • Rebranding of the facility from Warrina Lakes to “Warrina Lakes Community Parklands”; • New directional signage; • An upgraded car park; • A nature playground; • A BMX pump track; • Two new wetlands with bird hides; • A lake viewing/wedding platform; • A pop up outdoor cinema; • Significant revegetation areas;

• Linkages through to the Warrina Retirement Village; and • Various footpath, lighting and parking improvements.

The Plan underwent an initial consultation phase in 2019 and draft consultation phase in 2021, during which a total of 120 submissions were received from the community.

The suggestions, feedback and ongoing discussions with the community and key stakeholders were collated and used to develop the Plan.

The staged implementa-

tion of the Plan will be a matter for Council’s further consideration, as part of its annual budget deliberations and delivery of its works and maintenance programs. The Plan will be used to apply for state and federal funding for individual projects within the Plan where available.

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENT REDUCES THE SPREAD OF SIAM WEED

More than 300 stem-galling flies, or Cecidochares Connexa, have been released by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council in the Munro Plains area to combat the spread of the notorious Siam Weed (Chromolaena Odorata).

The stem-galling fly is the first to be released within Australia to combat Siam weed.

The gall-fly combats the

invasive weed by stunting the growth, reducing flowering and stopping the plant from seeding.

Environment portfolio holder, Councillor Jeff Baines said Siam weed, commonly in the Tully, Murray Upper and Johnstone catchment areas, is one of Australia’s most invasive weeds which smothers native plants and can poison

numbers increase over the years and the flies spread to new Siam weed areas, which is a positive outcome for longterm weed control methods.

“Within the new site, landholders should expect to see gall development within 21 days of release, with a completed life cycle of the stem-galling fly taking up to 65 days.

“Whilst the stem-galling fly does not eradicate the weed fully, it has proven to successfully reduce and minimise the spread of the weed.

“In addition to the release of the stem-galling fly, Cassowary Coast Regional Council has recently undertaken roadside control of Siam weed to help residents, neighbouring council areas, and those further afield,

to manage Siam weed,” said Councillor Baines.

Council and DAF will continue to monitor the flies and expect to see a positive result for the landholders at Munro Hill and its surrounds.

LAND SALES PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW HOMES

Construction is underway at a number of locations across the Cassowary Coast following the sale of all eighteen properties previously owned by Council in a Tully residential subdivision.

Cassowary Coast Regional Council successfully sold the properties which had been as-

sessed as not providing return or community benefit, while Council was owning the properties.

Councillor Nick Pervan said it is exciting to see construction taking place across Tully and surrounds. “Over the past two years, we have seen a huge uptake in individuals and families who want to take advantage of

the relaxed lifestyle and beautiful environment we have on offer and with an influx of new residents, many people have struggled to find appropriate housing.

“Council offering these vacant lots for sale provides a number of benefits. Income generated can then be used by Council to support future

projects and the vacant lots provide an opportunity for homes to be built and new residents to call the Cassowary Coast home.

“The 18 lots have successfully been sold, with already some buyers already well into the construction phase on these blocks which is a great outcome for the

community. Another lot is currently under contract and is due for settlement in May. The sale of the eighteen (18) lots sold by Council have generated $682,500,” said Councillor Pervan.

As a part of the 2020/2021 budget, Cassowary Coast Regional Council began a significant review of

its assets. This process identified a number of lots for disposal and in 2020 Council resolved to commence a tender process on a subdivision of eighteen (18) vacant residential lots located in Tully.

A House and Land package at Quarry Road, Stoters Hill was sold at auction and Council has

now endorsed recommendations to release for public tender Ranch Road, Munro Plains, and will hold on disposing of 41 Owen Street, Innisfail and land at Scullen Avenue, Mighell.

COMMUNITY TO COMMENT ON CEMETERY STRATEGY S O L A R Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) invites the community to provide feedback on the draft Cemeteries Management Strategy.

The strategy document will guide the planning, management and operation of Cassowary Coast Regional Council controlled cemeteries for the next ten years.

Councillor Nick Pervan said that cemeteries have an important place in our community and Council recognises the importance of planning to meet the future needs of our residents.

“There are a number of factors that individuals may consider when deciding on

where and how they will be laid to rest at the end of their life, including available facilities, cost, religion, personal/ moral values.

“At last count, there were 48 languages spoken and 46 different religions practiced within the region.

“Research has shown, the Cassowary Coast region has an aging population, but we also pride ourselves on the regions cultural diversity.

These factors and more create varying religious requirements and end-of-life choices,” said Councillor Pervan.

The draft strategy takes into consideration the evolution of the funeral and burial industry,

land availability, population trends, migration, cultural practices, future demand and end-of-life decision trends for residents. All of this information allows Council to plan for the future and continue to deliver suitable cemetery services for the community.

Council invites the community to review the strategy and provide feedback on the recommendations outlined.

Solar Panels on Innisfail Shire Hall

Cassowary Coast Regional Council is set to save thousands each year and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emission thanks to the installation of solar panels across Council owned and operated assets.

The Energy Efficiency Program commenced in 2019 and to date has achieved: • Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions from solar energy equivalent to 1660 Tonnes of carbon dioxide • 24 new active solar sites with a production capacity of 970.7 kw • Full LED Lighting replacements to Innisfail Shire Hall, Tully Depot and Innisfail Depot • Annual solar production value of $175,000 • Annual power savings of

over $545,000 made up of solar production, energy management and energy efficient fixtures.

Mayor Mark Nolan said this project delivers both environmental and financial benefits for the community.

“The installation of solar to Council sites has seen a substantial saving in Council’s ongoing power bills and also taken positive steps in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

“In the two and half years since the first site was installed Council has seen a direct saving of $283,312 which will increase as additional solar sites are installed.

“Additional steps were also taken to decrease emissions including tariff reviews and the renewal of energy-efficient

fittings and fixtures throughout Council facilities,” said Mayor Nolan.

Council has recently awarded a solar package for the installation of an additional 81.4kw capacity bringing the total capacity of the program above one megawatt.

The Energy Efficiency Program is proudly funded by the Queensland Governments Works for Queensland in association with Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

By Maria Larkins THE CAIRNS School of Distance Education (CSDE) will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on Friday May 27 with an open day.

Formerly known as the Cairns School of the Air, CSDE was established in 1972, with eleven pupils. The school offered high frequency (HF) radio lessons to geographically isolated children. Typically, the students were on remote cattle stations or farms.

It operated out of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Cairns base at Edge Hill and used its facilities to transmit lessons and correspond with students.

Enrolment steadily grew to a peak in 1986 when the school had 280 students and nine teachers. To combat isolation and provide students with an opportunity to meet their classmates and teachers, there were Activity Days and an Annual Camp.

In 1990 Cairns School of the Air was officially renamed a

School of Distance Education.

During this period, the teachers previously attached to the Itinerant Teaching Service were transferred to the Cairns school to provide field support.

Three years later the CSDE was relocated from Edge Hill to new purpose-built facilities in Hoare Street, Cairns. That year the school also offered a preschool program for the first time.

The transition from a School of the Air to a full preschool to year 10 School of Distance Edu-

cation was complete in 1995.

CSDE has continued to expand and currently offers a full educational package from prep to year 12. It also provides Languages other than English (LOTE) to many small rural and regional schools.

Since the inception of distance education, new technologies have progressively been adopted. Online components have been delivered since 2000.

HF Radio was replaced in 2005 with telephone teaching via

Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Today Prep to Year 12 homebased students receive online learning and video conferencing supported with video and audio resources on CD-ROM or DVD. In addition to on-campus classes for students from prep to Year 12, the school also has an Open Learning Campus for Cairns students in Years 9 – 12 who are disconnected or disengaged from education. The OLC delivers programs via blended

learning mode which includes online and face-to-face classes.

Past and present staff, students and visitors are welcome to attend the open day on Friday, May 27 from 4pm to 8pm.

Current and former staff and students will celebrate the 50th anniversary later this year with a Gala Dinner on Sunday, November 29, 2022.

FUN RUN FOR A GOOD CAUSE THE Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns is just around the corner. There are many ways to participate in the festival – including joining the COUCH Charity Fun Run on Friday, June 10.

There’s no event like IRONMAN. The incredible team brings this phenomenal event to Cairns that locals, national and international guests, enjoy every year.

The Cairns Organisation United for Cancer Health (COUCH) is the official charity partner of the Cairns Airport IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns.

As part of the 2022 Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns Festival, the IRONMAN team are putting on a Fun Run on Friday morning, June 10 – and are donating the proceeds to COUCH. All locals need to do – is get their ticket and join in the fun of

the 5km course along the Cairns Esplanade.

The race starts at 7.35am with registration, and checkin from 6am.

Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns Race Director Luke Palmer said they were excited to be holding a Fun Run to support COUCH. “IRONMAN is proud to have chosen The Cairns Organisation United for Cancer Health (COUCH) as the official charity partner of the Cairns Airport IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns,” Mr Palmer said.

“The COUCH Charity Fun Run is sure to be an amazing morning where we can have some fun and celebrate the local Cairns community.”

The COUCH Charity Fun Run’s theme is all about colour. This is because there are many different types of cancer, all represented by a

WEST CAIRNS TPI MEMORIAL BOWLS CLUB INC A bright sunny Monday afternoon greeted the eighteen keen bowlers at the West Cairns Bowls Club last Monday.

We welcomed back two past visitors who we believe will be settling here shortly. The winning team was announced at the end of the day as Rosemary Stevens, Les Kensdale, with their skip being Fred Clarke. It was a change to be able to play the full game from 1:30pm to

different awareness colour.

So COUCH would love for people to wear whatever awareness colour they like or wear them all.

The Fun Run will have prizes for the most colourful participants and a trophy for the winner.

Every participant is making a difference in the lives of locals living with cancer.

DOG SHOW A CHARITABLE O SUCCESS N Sunday morning, May 15, the voice of Daryl O’Reilly (MC of the day) rung out from the Palm Cove Tavern as he announced the next winner of the Palm Cove Dog Show.

The crowd went wild with each competition; the sun was shining, the BBQ was cooking, and coffee was brewing. The audience got to enjoy a delicious meal, raffles and prizes.

Palm Cove dog owners got to have an entertaining afternoon with their beloved pets while also supporting the Young Animal Protection Society (YAPS) with funds to support their work in rescuing dogs around FNQ. Local businesses all pitched, together with the organisational skills of Rhonda Henderson and the gentle persuasion of Rosaleigh Burgess, who ensured the show flowed and doggies were where they needed to be.

Carole O’Reilly were put under enormous pressure with 65 dogs and 35 rescued dogs competing and their dog owners putting in maximum effort to have them and their pups looking their best.

$3,750 raised; the cheque has been handed over to YAPS to continue their labour of rescuing abandoned dogs in FNQ and helping them find their forever home.

Organiser Rhonda Henderson said the event was a great success.

“We raised $3,750, and

the YAPS volunteers were very excited,” Ms Henderson said.

“The overall fancy dress winners were Kobe and Eileen and their dogs Dotti and Black Betty.

“I want to congratulate the Palm Cove Tavern for their service.

“The Palm Cove Tavern was dog-friendly, it looked beautiful, they cooked breakfast and donated all the funds to YAPS, all the dogs were well-behaved, and it was fantastic; we hope we can hold the event there again.”

The organisers of the PC Dog Show want to thank their sponsors, Palm Cove Car Rental, Vivid Cleaning Solutions, the Palm Cove Tavern, Elysium Collection, RE/MAX, Petstock, Marlin Waters Beach Front Apartments and Do Drop In, for their support.

“The show was a huge success, and everybody is looking forward to the next one,” Ms Henderson said.
