WE WILL REMEMBER THEM A N Z A C

PRIL 25 is a day of national remembrance, marking the anniversary of the first major military battle fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I (WWI). Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and particularly those who have died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. We admire the valour and we mourn the loss of those who fought at Gallipoli and throughout WWI, those who, several decades later, battled to fight back invading armies to save French and Belgian villages or to stave off threats in the Pacific or, later again, in jungles in Vietnam, and since in deserts, and wherever and whenever they have been called to fight or to keep peace.
D A Y
We particularly commemorate those who answered the call to arms in service of their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the freedoms we enjoy. In pausing to commemorate those who have served and sacrificed, our thoughts also go out to those who are still serving on the frontlines. To our army, air force and navy personnel presently on active service overseas, those supporting them and the families who are waiting for their loved ones to return. A number of commemorations will be held across the Cassowary Coast in 2022 to honour and remember those who have served and are still severing.

LET’S CLEAR THE AIR Heading to the beach this weekend? Don’t be tempted to have a bonfire on the beach. Not only are they illegal, they can also cause serious injuries if not extinguished correctly. Smoke may also disturb neighbours, interfere with daily activities and seriously affect people’s health. Any fire on CCRC roads, reserves, foreshores and esplanades are prohibited and on the spot fines of $689.00 apply.
AVOID WASTE Before you buy it. Think about it.
Leave #NothingToWaste in our beautiful backyard by avoiding waste to begin with. Avoiding waste starts with a pause before you buy to have a think and ask yourself…

Local businesses to embrace plastic free future
Businesses in Cassowary Coast Region, can take up the challenge to ditch singleuse plastic with the help of the Plastic Free Places online consultation program. Cassowary Coast Regional Council is thrilled to sponsor ten online consult sessions, giving 10 local businesses the opportunity to get free tailored advice, ensuring they can both meet and beat the Queensland single-use plastics ban. Single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and expanded polystyrene (foam) containers & cups were banned in September last year, with additional bans on the near horizon. “I’m sure that there are many business owners who want to start making changes, but simply don’t have the time to do all their own research.
That’s why we’re thrilled to be supporting this program” said Councillor Teresa Millwood, Waste Management and Innovation portfolio holder. Plastic Free Places is a nation-wide program run by the Boomerang Alliance, Australia’s peak not-for-profit waste organisation. Already they’ve assisted over 750 businesses to eliminate 10 million pieces of single-use plastic since launching the program in 2017. This year they’ve extended the program by launching an online-consult version of the program, assisting businesses in even more communities. “Here in Queensland we currently run successful onground programs in Cairns, Port Douglas, Townsville, Rockhampton & Livingstone and previously in Noosa, so we’re thrilled our online con-

sults can extend that opportunity to more communities like the Cassowary Coast Regional Council region,” said Kellie Lindsay, Plastic Free Places Program Manager. “Our program is designed to make it easy for local food retailers to switch away from using single-use plastic,” said Ms Lindsay. “We work directly with businesses, look at what they’re using and show them what alternatives are available to them, and give them tips to reduce ongoing packaging costs.” Businesses that are interested in participating in a oneoff free 45 minute online consult are encouraged to register at http://www.plasticfreeplaces. org/consult using Council’s Code CASSCOAST22.

COUNCIL SEEKS TO RE-ACTIVATE DUNK ISLAND SPIT Cassowary Coast Regional Council is seeking tenders for a long term lessee of the Spit area at Dunk Island with tender scheduled to be released on Friday 22 April. Dunk Island situated only 4km off the coast of Mission Beach is one of the region’s most iconic tourism attractions. Located within the Great Barrier Reef marine park community and visitors alike are drawn to the many island beaches and rainforest walking trails. As such, Council recognises the need to invest in activating the main day-visit and camping area of the Spit to meet anticipated tourist demand. Since repossession of the
Spit area last year, Council has commenced upgrades to facilities and appointed a short-term caretaker to manage the campsites and clean amenities. The appointment of a long term lessee and further activation of the Spit at Dunk Island represents a commercial opportunity for a private investor for up to 30 years. This lease opportunity aims to re-activate island visitor services at the Spit to complement the greater island experience as a valuable destination spot on the Cassowary Coast. The four hectare lease area currently comprises of nine camp sites, a camp kitchen and
amenities block. Council has proposed a maximum term of 30 years is available and will seek to review fully funded proposals to ensure the Spit is managed and developed in a sustainable manner. Interested parties wishing to apply for the tender can find more information for the Request for Tender for Dunk Island Spit on Council’s website, www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/our-council/ tenders-and-quotes or click https://bit.ly/3rC4iBg Visitors wishing to stay at Dunk Island can book a tropical island campsite online at www.dunkislandcamp.com. au or via the Mission Beach Visitor Information Centre.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council wants you to join the conversation and share feedback on what is important to residents and where council should focus its attentions. The One Coast: Cassowary Coast Community Scorecard will provide an opportunity for residents to have their say on Council services and facilities, community and customer service satisfaction, inform regional challenges, and service priorities. Community members aged 14 years and older, are invited to join the conversation by providing feedback in a safe anonymous way via the online survey or completing a physical copy mailed to households. To facilitate the scorecard, Council engaged CATALYSE an independent research company who has conducted Community Scorecards for
close to 140 councils across Australia. Councillor Trudy Tschui said the scorecard will benchmark Council’s performance across a range of measures and identify ways to improve service and delivery to residents, guide future projects, and organisational improvement. “Like every organisation trying to achieve change, we want to know how we can better serve our community, develop our region, and provide a positive experience with Council. The scorecard facilitates those conversations. “We want to see the whole community joining the conversation to ensure the data collected represents the priorities of our wider community. Each household will receive one physical copy of the scorecard and any additional scorecards required can be completed
online. “The scorecard findings will be shared with our community and we will work together to improve, create change and initiatives to ensure our region continues to be a great place to be. “I encourage residents to offer genuine feedback as this is a valuable opportunity to hear your voice and understand the needs and aspirations of local community members, to evaluate community priorities and measure Council’s performance against key indicators,” said Councillor Tschui. The One Coast: Cassowary Coast Community Scorecard will be available to complete online at www.catalyse.com. au/studies from Monday 25 April 2022.
One physical copy of the scorecard will be mailed to each household and can be returned via the prepaid-post envelope included or by dropping to a Council Customer Service Centre, find your nearest branch at www.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au/ our-council/contact-council. The scorecard will be open for a minimum of three weeks. Any community members who require assistance or access to a computer can drop into their local Library branch, where one of our Library team would be more happy to assist. For updates on the Community Scorecard and how you can join the conversation, please visit Council’s website via www.cassowarycoastregionalcouncil.com.au/community-scorecard
