Fighting for Planet A TANYA MURPHY TWENTY Year 5 students and five teachers from six different schools gathered at Cairns Regional Council Chambers on Monday October 19 to get empowered and inspired to make a difference for the environment. Students who participated in last year’s Cairns Youth Climate Summit, also run by Council, gave a presentation and ran a workshop for the Year 5 students about taking action on climate change. The students also used Zoom to attend the Sustainable Schools Summit, an event which saw more than 200 primary and secondary students, parents, teachers and school staff from 29 schools throughout Far North Queensland put their heads together to share ideas on how to make their schools more sustainable. The event was supposed

CEO Resigns

Cairns Regional Council CEO, John Andrejic, has tendered his resignation. In his seven years at Council, Mr Andrejic has helped steer the organisation though a particularly dynamic and prosperous period – his guidance and leadership has helped to deliver six consecutive balanced Budgets and at the same time record capital expenditure programs for the city.

to see the students physically gather in Cairns and Townsville, but it moved online due to COVID regulations, which allowed even more students from across the world and even internationally to attend.

He has also been pivotal in guiding Council through some challenging times, including the unintended by decisive consequences of the Belcarra legislation, and currently steering the response and recovery of the city through the COVID crisis.

Students were excited to interact with the keynote speaker Craig Reucassel, the man behind ABC’s War on Waste and #FightforPlanetA, whose humour and engaging style had the students’ full attention. Other speakers included Cairns Australian Youth Climate Action Coalition co-founder Garrett Swearingen, and young founder of the social business enterprise, ‘Tell someone who cares’, Holley Somerville-Knott. Students from various schools including Trinity Bay and Smithfield State High Schools also had the opportunity to give presentations about the sustainability projects in their own schools. “Growing our own vegetables means we use less plastic waste from buying food,” he said.

Many of the sustainability projects in Cairns schools are facilitated by the Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre.

Division Five Councillor Amy Eden said Council was dedicated to supporting

events like this because educating students was key in protecting “Planet A.” “By learning about actions they can take in their everyday lives, these students will become leaders and get their parents and community involved too,” she said.

Mr Andrejic joined Council in 2013 as Chief Financial Officer and was elevated to the role of CEO in 2016. Cairns Mayor Bob Manning paid tribute to Mr Andrejic’s leadership and thanked him for invaluable assistance and counsel over the past seven years. “I would like to personally thank John for his contribution to the organisation and to the city of Cairns, and wish him and his family well,” Cr Manning said.

Extraordinary programs see teacher recognised Cairns teacher is the only QLD finalist NICOLE GIBSON

HER work is described as life-changing but Cairns’ only finalist in Queensland’s prestigious TEACHX awards credits her team and the strength of families at her school. Cairns West State School (CWSS) Deputy Principal Engagement, Cathy Nixon is one of five Queensland teachers shortlisted for the TEACHX Outstanding Contribution to School Community Award. Since joining the school five years ago, Ms Nixon has

led countless initiatives to improve the lives of students and their families, resulting in a 40 percent reduction in suspensions and 50 percent calmer classes.

for exemplary practice in a school setting,” Mr Hansen said.

CWSS Principal Michael Hansen said the contribution Ms Nixon makes to students and their families on a daily basis is genuinely life-changing.

Ms Nixon is the driving force behind the school’s “It Takes a Village” strategy which provides families and students with school-based access to dozens of external support services, they may otherwise find difficult to reach.

“Her ability to create, maintain and support parents to engage in their children’s education is a benchmark

These include medical, legal and counselling services, an on-site foodbank and other government, sporting and

community agencies like The MaraWay Community Hub. Ms Nixon said she is overwhelmed by the recognition and credits this to CWSS’s team of exceptional educators and the commitment students’ families have to seeing them achieve. “All of our families are really very strong,” Ms Nixon said. “All our parents want the best for their kids and all our families want their kids to succeed.”

Ms Nixon said CWSS adopts a ‘whatever it takes’ approach and isn’t afraid to do things differently. “Success is different to different people,” she said. “Sometimes the system needs to be tweaked a little bit to make that happen.” The winner will be announced at the annual Queensland College of Teachers TEACHX awards on 29 October, the day before World Teachers’ Day celebrations.

Rifle Creek Rest Area refreshed Motorists on the Mulligan Highway between Mount Molloy and Lakeland can break up their drive at the improved Rifle Creek Rest Area. Transport and Main Roads Director-General Neil Scales said the rest area now had a new sheltered seating area. “To improve safety, we have removed two large trees near the toilet block and overhead power lines,” Mr Scales said. “We have also resealed the toilet block road and regraded the entry/exit bay for the rest area. “Well-equipped rest areas like this help keep our roads safe and I encourage all motorists to use them to break up long drives.” The upgrade was funded by the Queensland Government under the Royalties for the Region Program.

Springing to action on mattress recycling “All of our employees are well trained in the use of PPE to ensure they can do this work safely.

MATTRESSES heading to landfill are something that Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) and Endeavour Foundation will no longer take lying down.

“Having a job provides our supported employees with an income but they also receive the benefits of social connection, increasing confidence and self-esteem, and improving physical and mental health.”

The disability service provider and local council are partnering on a Far North Queensland-first initiative to save space in the region’s landfill, while creating jobs for people with an intellectual disability. The initiative will save more than 926 cubic meters of waste from going of landfill each year, which is equivalent to the volume of 23 fully-grown African elephants.

Supported Employee Jarrod Murray said he was looking forward to the new dismantling work.

Councillor Teresa Millwood with Craig Whitechurch, Kahla Oliveri and Gordon McDermind at Endeavour Foundation Business Solutions, Innisfail.

A total of 1,926 mattresses went to landfill in the region last year but from now on, 70 per cent of the region’s mattresses will be recycled, with the exception of badly soiled mattresses

“Mattresses are huge bulky items but they are very recyclable once they’ve been dismantled and the reduction in waste is massive,” she said.

CCRC Councillor for Waste, Teresa Millwood said the council was springing to action to tackle the issue.

“Once the springs and other recyclable parts have been taken out, 100 mattresses can be reduced from 130 cubic

metres of waste to just one cubic metre of waste, saving heaps of space in our local landfill.” Mattresses will be collected from council transfer stations, aerated for five days, and dismantled at Endeavour Foundation Business Solutions –

“It’s great to have more and different things to do,” Mr Murray said.

Innisfail, before being sent for recycling.

“It’s pretty easy and fun. We cut the mattress open and strip away the top and bottom.

“Nearly every part of a mattress including the springs, the wood, and the fabric can be recycled so this new scheme will eliminate a great deal of waste,” said Site Manager Craig Whitechurch.

Local residents can take their mattresses to council’s waste transfer facilities.

“It’s good to stop them going to [landfill] and the metal can be used to make other things.”

Strong after stroke

TANYA MURPHY

THREE years after a Right Thalamic Stroke left her with permanent nerve damage on her left side, Tara-Lee Henry will walk 50 kilometres in the month of November to raise money for the Stroke Foundation.

Stroke Foundation’s annual Stride4Stroke campaign.

Tara-Lee was only 28 years old and eight weeks pregnant in 2017 when she suffered the stroke, which was caused by a combination of clotting from pregnancy hormones, and a congenital heart defect called Patent Foramen Ovale which she didn’t know she had.

The left side Parietal Lobe Stroke has left Sarah with right side weakness and she is also getting intensive therapy for speech and language issues.

It took months of practice to re-learn how to use her left arm and hand by practicing piano with her friend, a music therapist, and to this day she still suffers from vision impairment, fatigue, and balance and coordination issues. However, none of that has stopped Tara-Lee from pursuing her dreams, getting back into her career, trying her hand at salsa dancing, and now preparing for the arrival of baby number three. She has started Strollers 4 Stroke, a group of Cairns mums who will meet up for morning walks throughout the whole month of November until reaching the total of 50 kilometres, as part of the

Joining Tara-Lee in the challenge is Sarah Sheehan, who had a stroke at age 38 in February this year, six days after the birth of her daughter Stevie.

“I’m really happy to help raise money for an organisation that has helped families like ours, and an organisation that can help save lives with their research and community education,” said Sarah. “Before my stroke I lived an active lifestyle and a goal of mine is to get back in to playing sport. This challenge will help me to get more active. “Stroke recovery takes a lot of motivation, but also a lot of patience. You have to celebrate the small wins.” Tara-Lee said 50 kilometres was a challenging but achievable goal for them. “When you have a brain injury it takes a lot more energy to do anything than it would normally, so we have to be mindful that we set realistic daily goals for our-

selves,” she said. “It’s not easy, but having a positive attitude can have a huge impact on how well you recover after a stroke. If you give yourself time and effort you can improve. “The biggest thing is being able to ask for help when you need it. When I first had this stroke, I didn’t realise I was able to get access to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, psychologists and more. “A person who’s had a stroke is not in a frame of mind to advocate proactively for their own health, and family and friends often don’t know what’s available or where to turn for help, so the Stroke Foundation offers valuable advice and support. “We’re so grateful to our wonderful family and friends for their support and we’ve been blown away by the community support for our fundraiser.” To donate, visit www. stride4stroke.org.au/fundraisers/Strollers4Stroke and you can follow the girls’ progress by searching for “Strollers 4 Stroke” on Facebook.

Phone Scam using QLD Police Phone Numbers DETECTIVES from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group have issued a warning to Queensland residents about a scam using Queensland Police Service phone numbers to legitimise government or bank impersonation scams. Recent reports indicate the scammers are using a practice known as caller ID spoofing, where they inappropriately manipulate the telephone network to indicate the incoming call is from a different number (in these cases a QPS number). This scam involves you receiving a call from what appears to be a trusted or well-known government phone number and the caller impersonating an employee from the organisation (in this case a police officer) to legitimise the scam. The scammer threatens you in relation to an outstanding fine or fee, for example, a debt with the Australian Taxation Office or a warrant for your arrest or deportation. The scammer then demands a form of payment to prevent action against you. While this type of scam

has been doing the rounds for some time, police are concerned this version of the scam using a QPS spoofed phone number has an additional layer which may result in more members of the community falling victim. Detective Acting Superintendent Vince Byrnes from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group urged Queensland residents to always be vigilant when receiving phone calls from people asking for money or personal details. “Police, or any other legitimate government department or financial institution, will never call you and ask for your personal banking information or payments in gift cards, cryptocurrency or money transfers. “It is important to take independent steps to verify a caller’s identity before providing any personal information or payments of any sort, irrespective of the phone number displayed, or who a caller claims to work for. “Please make your own enquiries if you do receive a phone call from what appears to be a police station, take

down the callers details, find a number yourself and dial it in, rather than returning a call you may have missed or were directed to,” said Detective Acting Superintendent Vince Byrnes. Queensland Police officers will never: • Contact you to ask for your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or bank details • Ask you to transfer money out of your account • Ask you to withdraw cash to and over to them for safe-keeping • Send someone to your home to collect cash, cards or your PIN If you have received such a call and made a payment to a scammer, contact your financial institution immediately and report the matter to the Australian Cyber Security Centre – ReportCyber. If you did not lose any funds you can still report the incident to Scamwatch. Learn more about this scam at https://www.scamwatch.gov.au and R U In Control.

Real life thriller Those looking for a thrilling real-life horror film experience this Halloween should book their tickets now for “Freakshow – The Haunt,” taking place in Cairns from Thursday to Saturday, October 29-31. Strictly for ages 15 and up, this is no cheesy haunted house for kids, but rather an exciting realistic experience featuring Hollywood-quality Special Effects, acting, set design, installations, lighting and sound effects. For just $25 per adult, you and a group of friends can have the joy of getting the living daylights frightened out of you as you are taken on a 20-minute walking tour through a maze in an old industrial building, haunted by creepy clowns, chainsaw murderers and others! And before you chicken out, just remember that you will be supporting talented local artists and acting enthusiasts who have spent weeks painstakingly creating the show. Local artist Jessica Lynn created the Freakshow brand after embracing her passion

for horrifying makeup and prosthetic mask design six years ago. She has worked all over the world in film, television music videos, theatres, and festivals. Co-creator Jon Willerton, whose residence is being used for the event, has been a fire performer for decades and has helped build sets and infrastructure for many of Australia’s large outdoor festivals including Wallaby Creek, Earth Frequency and Rainbow Serpent. The third co-creator, Rebecca Scott from Create More, said they also had a trusty team of additional volunteers to help with building and painting the elaborate

set. “We are doing it for fun and for the love of creating, and we are only charging enough to break even,” she said. Create More also received a grant from the Regional Arts Fund to help with this event. The funding was originally for a “Tropical Steampunk” event on September 19, but was re-allocated after that event was cancelled due to COVID. Participants are encouraged to dress up in Halloween costumes and sturdy shoes are recommended. Tickets available at Eventbrite.com.au and for more information visit www. facebook.com/freakshowcairns.

Taco Bell Launch Cairns staff search NICOLE GIBSON

Mexican restaurant chain Taco Bell commenced advertising for staff for its new DFO Cairns outlet last week, in a move that’s sure to have super-fans on alert.

NEW RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY IN CAIRNS PETER MCCULLAGH NEW technology designed to make recycling beverage containers faster arrived in the Cairns area this week when the first bulk container counting unit outside of south-east Queensland became operational in the suburb of Edmonton. The bulk sorting unit started accepting containers this morning at Cash 4 Containers, a Container Refund Point (CRP) in the Containers for Change scheme. The Containers for Change scheme offers 10 cent refunds on eligible containers at CRPs and has now collected more than 2.5 billion containers across the state during the two years of the scheme’s operation. In the greater Cairns Region more than 140 million containers have been recycled. This figure is significant as the majority of unrecycled containers are buried in landfill or left to pollute the environment and potentially end up in our waterways or Great Barrier Reef. From this week customers at Cash 4 Containers will have their container counts

sped up with the new technology installed at 33 Vickers St, Edmonton.

turn and find the cash in their eligible containers,” said Mr Noye.

The new machine expedites the counting of eligible containers, with the unit able to process up to 6000 containers per hour.

“This new bulk sorting unit in Edmonton will do just that for people in the greater Cairns area by ensuring the containers they return are counted faster and help avoid unnecessary queuing at the depot.

The TOMRA E1 bulk sorting machine also possesses state-of-the-art technology that can recognise and sort the different material types, be it aluminium, glass, plastic or paperboard. It achieves container recognition by shape and barcode scanning to ensure accurate counts for customers, and also provides safer and cleaner workplaces with less handling of recycled materials. Ken Noye is the chief executive of Container Exchange, the not-for-profit company that runs the Containers for Change scheme for the State Government. He said the scheme was constantly aiming to give customers a better experience when they return their eligible containers. “New technology plays an important part in providing customers the convenience they want in the way they re-

“The Containers for Change scheme has now realised a 54 per cent reduction in beverage container litter across Queensland in less than two years, and the roll out of new technology like this will help us build on that number.” This morning local community group Edmonton Men’s Shed, which uses the scheme to raise funds, held a sausage sizzle at Edmonton Cash 4 Containers to mark the release of the new machine. The Containers for Change scheme returned $163 million in refunds last year to customers, charities, community groups, local councils and material recovery facilities across Queensland. In Queensland there are more than 3,500 different community, sporting or charities participating in the

scheme.

For more information on Containers for Change, see www.containersforchange. com.au What containers are eligible under this scheme? Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a 10 cent refund. Eligible containers must be included on the scheme’s list of products and display the refund mark (eg 10c refund mark). Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than 3 Litres. Excluded containers:

The positions of Restaurant General Manager and Assistant Restaurant Manager were advertised on the company’s website and posted to online job boards Seek and Indeed. Australian franchisee owner, Collins Foods Limited remained tight-lipped about an official opening date for its Cairns outlet. However, the news is the biggest indication yet that the highly anticipated launch may be imminent. In 2018, the company ignited speculation about a local outlet when it announced plans to open 50 Taco Bells in Australia by 2021. For almost a year now, locals have watched in envy as their Townsville counterparts indulged in

worldwide classics like Crunchwrap Supreme®, Cheesy Gordita Crunch® and fan favourite Crunchy Tacos. Cairns fans responded by taking to Taco Bell’s Facebook Australia page pleading for a restaurant and proving just how many die-hard FNQ fans the group has. “Can’t wait for the Cairns store to open,” said one Facebook user. “Then I’ll only have to drive 70kms for some TB goodness.” If recent launches are anything to go by locals vying for their first taste of Taco Bell better have a sleeping bag, with reports of super-fans camping out overnight to get their hands on the tasty tucker. Despite the impacts of COVID-19, work has progressed on the 2500sqm restaurant which will seat 60 diners inside, 20 in its outdoor dining area and offer a drive-through service. Taco Bell currently has 14 Australian restaurants with 10 in Queensland.

• Plain milk containers of all sizes including plantbased milk substitutes • Glass containers that contained wine or pure spirits • Containers 1L or more that contained flavoured milk, pure fruit or vegetable juice, cask wine or cask water • Concentrated/undiluted cordial or syrup containers • Sachets above 250ml that have contained wine • Registered health tonics

Construction is well advanced on the new Taco Bell restaurant located at DFO in Westcourt

ABOUT

I was raised on a dairy farm and working hard was instilled in me by my parents.

My wife Rosie and I have owned small businesses and genuinely understand the ups and downs. I later became a paramedic and it was ultimately the ramping of ambulances at the Cairns Hospital that motivated me to run for parliament. Campbell Newman’s LNP Government destroyed the public service and our region lost so many workers and services. I’m focussed on continuing to restore frontline health and education services and to ensuring people have decent roads to drive on and spend less time sitting in traffic every day.

ISSUE 1

Economic development and the environment can go hand in hand.

My electorate is one of the most spectacular in the state when it comes to the environment; the reef and rainforests are our backyard. This is important to locals – they want these natural assets protected and around for future generations. Our tourism industry is dependent on us doing this properly – the reef supports thousands of jobs and is a massive contributor to the economy, which is why we’re delivering comprehensive measures to protect it. The renewable energy industry presents huge job opportunities, and this will only continue to grow. I think the Far North is well placed to be at the forefront of this emerging sector. People should feel safe in their homes and in their community. Crime statistics will change from time to time, but the Palaszczuk Government has been delivering some pretty significant reforms to address crime in the region, particularly around young offenders.

ISSUE 2

We’ve already announced a historic increase to our police force across the State; 150 additional officers for the Far North region alone. This will make a difference, but the solution is more than just policing. There’s no doubt that where there is crime, there must be punishment, but to achieve real change we need families and communities involved too. That’s why we’re focussed on a suite of measures, including early intervention and community-based crime action committees. Q: What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? COVID is raised with me all the time. People have been concerned about their health and businesses have been impacted, some very hard. It is clear that locals are supportive of the Premier’s strong response to the pandemic, but they also want strong leadership as we come out the other side of the crisis and a real plan to rebuild our economy. This is where the difference between me, part of a Palaszczuk Government, and the LNP, couldn’t be clearer. I’ll be continuing to deliver record investment in local schools, just like we’re seeing in Redlynch and Smithfield, in our health services, and support for small businesses. Roads is another big issue – people don’t want to spend their time sitting in traffic. I’ve made significant progress by delivering the Bill Fulton Bridge duplication, Smithfield Bypass and improvements to the Western Arterial Road, but there is more to be done. I have plans and funding underway to address the bottlenecks - the last thing people want is this undone by the LNP who have a track record of cutting.

But we need to provide help to businesses to achieve the best outcomes.

The Palaszczuk Government is putting in place a plan for economic recovery from the global COVID-19 pandemic. Recent economic recovery announcements include $10 million for the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to increase Work Skills Traineeships in construction or conservation and land management and a $10 million Reef Assist program to create up to 200 employment opportunities through the delivery of priority environmental projects in Great Barrier Reef catchments.

The Reef Water Quality funding program, specifically for farmers, has recently been frozen. We will reinstate this program as it is imperative that we protect the reef, and our agricultural industry.

This is a major issue, particularly in regards to youth crime.

We have announced 60 new police officers for our region and whilst the numbers of police do not address crime itself, it does ensure that police have the resources to do what they need to do.

Q&A

ELECTORATE MEET THE CANDIDATES

CAIRNS & MULGRAVE ISSUE 1

How do you propose to manage the need to be environmentally sensitive as well as the need for economic development?

SAM MARINO

SUE COREY

LNP CAIRNS

GREENS MULGRAVE

My wife Linda and I have chosen to raise our family here because we love being part of a city that’s built on friendship, respect and mateship.

ABOUT

I started my working life as an apprentice, and soon qualified as an electrician, before going on to work in the marine, sugar and mining industries. Now, as a small business owner for nearly two decades, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing the Cairns business community. I am strong believer in giving back to the community and I have served on several not-for-profit organisations and boards that give back to the community.

ISSUE 1

We live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world with two World Heritage sites right on our doorstep.

The LNP is absolutely committed to continuing our strong record of environmental protection to ensure our kids and their kids enjoy our state’s natural beauty. An incoming LNP government will work with all sectors and industries as well as environmental groups to develop new environmental reef standards which will be enshrined in legislation, this includes improving water standards to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

ISSUE 2

Under the current Labor government, crime is out of control in Cairns.

It is abundantly clear what Labor’s Michael Healy is doing isn’t working – this is now the second election in a row we are talking about the crime crisis and residents want action, not lip service. The LNP has announced a comprehensive crime policy to recalibrate the scales of justice in favour of victims and the community, not criminals. This includes: sixty new police office for Cairns, bringing back breach of bail as an offence, tougher laws, mandatory detention for third offence, introducing a community payback scheme and the monitoring of youth offenders on bail 24/7, just to name a few. Q: What do you see as the most important issue for your electorate and how do you propose to address the issue? Crime is by far the number one issue people raise with me when I meet them. They are sick to death of Labor’s endless excuses, soft approach and they absolutely want change. Labor like to claim credit for keeping us safe (despite the fact the Premier has said she doesn’t make the health decisions) but at what cost? They have turned what was once a health crisis into an economic crisis for Cairns. The uncertainty they have created and the impact it has had on tourism and small businesses is demoralising. Once again Cairns has been subjected to the “one size fits all” approach which has cost thousands of local jobs and sent local businesses to the wall, despite little or no trace of COVID in our city. That is certainly a record I wouldn’t be proud of. Sadly, Queensland was the worst performing state BEFORE the pandemic. You can’t trust Labor to create the environment for businesses to flourish and create local jobs, because they have proven over the past five years it is beyond them. Labor have no plan, other to say it has a plan.

DAVID, Brinsmead APARTMENT INSURANCE Just read my first Cairns Local News issue. The insurance story is frightening. We have 42 units and our future looks bleak too.

SOUTHERN ACCESS ROAD

Mr Entsch has been making worthless promises about improved insurance cover for years. But he belongs to a government that worships coal and gas so don’t expect any change. Many people stand to lose everything if we can’t find a solution. HUMPHREY H, Westcourt

Is this the new norm pedestrians not allowed on footpaths. I guess we now have to walk on the roadway. We all are imperfect living in an imperfect world, I paraphrase Japanese writer Haruki Murakami with this introduction. For all the imperfections within us and our world; it is heartening to witness the tsunami of goodwill and the desire to preserve and honour the life of Toyah Cordingley. Whilst I need not dwell upon the senseless act that devastated a family and community two years ago, the murder of a beautiful young soul served to draw a community together, to support, honour and create some perfection within and very broken situation. Toyah will forever be remembered as a beautiful soul, caring and compassionate, someone who both in life and death changed the lives of those around her. Millions throughout Australia and the world, people who have never met Toyah joined forces in a virtual group hug to support the family and friends in their time of need. Not only do we pause this week to reflect upon Toyah’s legacy but tonight we mark Reclaim the Night commemorations. Violence within our community will never be tolerated. We must continue to take every reasonable measure to keep our children, wives, husbands and parents safe from abuse and violence. There’s so much more that needs to be done in the struggle to overcome violence within our community. But what has been shown by the Toyah campaign is that communities have had enough. They will rally around, bond together and support the victims as well as call out the deed.

BARRIE, Cairns FEEDBACK Good strong edition this week. The insurance story on page 3 is an important one for all Cairns and coastal residents. Great yarn about the sunflower farmer. Fantastic coverage of the flying-fox coverage. A controversial situation where passions are running high and your article is fair and balanced. Good journalism. DAVID, via Facebook

Great article. This has been a concern for my family for a few years now, in fact it’s the reason we moved from our much loved home in Holloway’s beach for higher ground. G’day PeterJust wanted to congratulate you & your staff on the new Cairns Local News paper. I was concerned news print seems to be a dying art with country papers losing out & having to shut up shop. I didn’t expect to see more publications coming out but am delighted & grateful for your free paper. This paper has been great for us locals who love a good read & catching up on local events & activities. Great local articles of interest & you seem the best at finding out what’s on locally including charity events, etc. Really appreciate all your great work so thank you to all the staff there. Keep up the quality of what you’re doing & keep on keeping on. Great stuff guys! With Kindness A Cairns Local reader

Why are we wasting our Council’s time and resources with the bats. Leave them be. The cost must be a serious issue by now? This bat relocation has been going now for over 110 days, at what cost? Is the Council prepared to tell us how many hundreds of thousands it has cost so far? Also what is the councillor for the division doing and saying? NOTHING! These bats are endangered. Council’s actions are affecting pups, placing further pressures on the colony. I guess they won’t be happy until they are gone or dead. Why doen’t the Council start promoting tourist viewing each evening and start to turn this unique natural event into a tourist event?

Holy Snapping Penguins Batman Now since I own Wayne’s World, I want to have a whinge about one subject that has me boiling.

There was no running water, all the pipes were frozen and yes that means the bloody loo was out of order too, hated squatting in the back yard.

Some people have been walking past this cranky old doorman saying that it’s starting to get too hot up here in the North Queensland tropics.

For old time sakes and after 30 plus years, totally out of curiosity I recently purchased and tried putting on a jumper that I found in Vinnies.

Really people! That’s why they call it the tropics not the freezpics.

But stick my head in a bucket of ice till I turned blue, once I pulled it up over my feet and knees be buggered if it would fit over me guts and nestle around the neck so I threw it out the window.

It’s not easy being green

TANYA MURPHY When it comes to caring for cute and cuddly endangered animals, slimy amphibians are not high on many peoples’ priority list. But frogs, some of our rainforest’s most beautiful and fascinating denizens, are being wiped out at an ever-growing rate, according to Queensland’s leading frog rescue facility FrogSafe. FrogSafe Founding President Deborah Tergolotti said that she started the frog hospital in 1998 after seeing the damage a new pathogen could do to frog populations. She said she believed the increasing rates of frog illness were due to impacts on frogs’ immune systems from agricultural chemicals which entered the market during the 1990s. “Frogs should normally be able to heal a wound on their own, but now they quickly

progress to infections and septicemia from the tiniest scratch, and this is definitely not normal,” she said. “Chemicals have been used in Australia for many decades but it wasn’t until the newer additions in the mid 1990s - including some which have already been banned in Europe due to their impact on critical pollinators like bees - that many new wildlife disease issues sprung up simultaneously. “Having these chemicals in our soil and waterways can have an impact across the board from World-Heritage listed rainforest to the Barrier Reef. “Water-based animals like frogs, larval insects, prawns and even corals can be affected so they act as ‘canaries in the coalmine.’ “Frogs don’t attract as much funding or interest as

other cute cuddly animals, but it’s important that we document and research the unprecedented plethora of diseases, cancers and malformations they are now developing. “These changes tell us that something is going wrong in the environment and that environment supports everything we do from tourism to food production and everything in between. “At FrogSafe, we are just volunteers but I believe our observations should be receiving more attention from scientists, and helping to inform policy on the chemicals allowed in Australia, because the system at present is not doing sufficient due diligence before they are approved.” Other than disease, Ms Tergolotti said other threats to frogs included cat and dog attacks, car impacts, parasites spread by cats, chemi-

cal burns, and crushing injuries when people close doors and windows without checking for frogs first. Ms Tergolotti said caring for sick frogs was complicated and training was definitely required to bring carers up to speed with clinical diagnosis and treatments. “I have developed a comprehensive course, but attendees need to be able to travel to Mission beach over a period of time,” she said.

The frog hospital operated in Cairns for 19 years but moved to Mission Beach three years ago. Volunteers are always needed and no knowledge of frogs is required. Most of the jobs are outside the frog room and range from simple manual tasks right through to technical skills. FrogSafe receives cases from Mackay to Cooktown and does long distance di-

agnosis for the rest of the country. The rule of thumb for sick frogs is that if you see a frog out in the open during the day, there is something wrong with it. If you see one, call FrogSafe on (07) 4068 9402 or send an email to admin@frogsafe.org.au. To donate or for more information visit www.frogsafe. org.au.

Cairns Comedy rebounds PHIL BRANDEL

reopening Peter said his shows have been selling out.

THE comedy scene in Cairns has bounced back and is now more promising than ever with several venues and promoters, launching regular comedy nights.

“We had been going for about three years and then we had to shut for about 4 months, since reopening we’re selling out two shows every Monday night. It’s been electric since we came back.” he said.

During the COVID lockdown venues, bars and restaurants closed their doors and as 2020 rolls on it seems like we need a laugh now more than ever, with the local comedy scene now more popular than pre-COVID. At the ripe old age of 23 Peter James is seen as a veteran on the Cairns comedy scene after he doing his first stand up show at school in grade 9. Peter has been running Laughing Heart Comedy at the Casino’s Paramore Theatre every Monday night for the past three years. Since

As well as Laughing Heart Peter also hosts the Cabaret show every Friday and Saturday night at the casino “It’s a 2 half and a half hour show, there’s heaps of comedy and it’s a super inappropriate show.” Steven ‘Richo’ Richardson runs Guilt Free Comedy at Macalister’s Brewery in Smithfield every second Thursday and says that he got his start in comedy because he was a fat awkward kid. “Comedy was my coping mechanism; I was the kid who made you laugh,” he

Steven ‘Richo’ Richardson at Macalister’s Guilt free comedy said. “I was an electrician for 14 years and I couldn’t do it anymore. Now I’m a comedian and I don’t want to do anything else. Marc ‘The Shark” Cornaz has been working as a comedian for the past two years and got his start at McAllister’s Brewery, during an open night. “I was talking to the MC and he suggested I get up, and after a few beers I got up and did all right and then asked if I wanted to do a set at Laughing Heart.” He now runs ‘Puff Puff Laugh’ at The Slap and

Pickle restaurant on Shields Street every second Sunday. “We have 5 comedians on every second Sunday, it starts at 6pm so it’s not too late,” he said. Marc started Puff Puff to give comedians in Cairns another room. “We need more places for people to watch comedy and for the comedians to try out their material.” All of the above venues accept open mike spots to anyone who wants to try stand up and Marc has advice to someone thinking of giving it a go “Just do it, write

a few jokes and give it a go.” Puff Puff Laugh is on every second Sunday at the Slap and Pickle in Shields street the next event is Sunday October 25. Guilt Free Comedy is on every second Thursday at McAlister’s Brewery in Smithfield the next night is October 29 Laughing Heart Comedy is on every Monday night at the Paramore theatre at the Casino from 7pm Try Tour is at Boardwalk Social at Flynn on the Esplanade the first Thursday of every month.

Work is set to start on an upgrade of the high voltage network at Cairns Hospital. A contract has been awarded to Watpac, an Australian construction company with offices in Cairns and Townsville, to deliver the $14.3 million project. Watpac have committed to using local sub-contractors that will be contributing to this project through the ‘local benefits requirements’ of the tender agreement. Chief Finance Officer Steve Thacker for Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service said the works were complex and involved a significant review and upgrade of the high voltage network at the Cairns Hospital. “This network infrastructure upgrade will ensure that we sustain and maintain our electrical supply well into the future,” said Mr Thacker.

JUTE Theatre Company nominated Doug for the Prestigious Art Awards category of The Aspire Awards 2020 and Doug has been shortlisted, with the final announcement to come on December 2.

Mr Robins holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Theatre and English from James Cook University and has led theatre workshops at ARC Disability Support Services in Cairns.

and prior to that in 2013, performed in the one-man-show, “Propelled” that he co-wrote and directed with Jane Modric. He has also been an active member of Tropical Arts, playing many roles including Hamlet in the Annual Shakespeare at the Tanks since 2011. Doug co-founded a local inclusive writers group called ‘YAAWIN’ culminating in the publication of an Ebook anthology.

“There were also more than 300 yellow pages phone books still in their wrappers, indicating that whoever got paid to deliver the phone books didn’t deliver them.

Sea Shepherd Cairns Marine Debris team coordinator Tamsin Shepherd said with turtle nesting season starting in November, it wasn’t a moment too soon to clean up the beach.

“The vehicles and jet ski had the number plates removed and had been stickered by the police, and although we removed many loose parts that were littering the beach we were not able to remove the vehicles.”

Doug Robins is the inaugural Access Arts Achievement award winner. The Aspire Awards celebrate the wonderful contribution people with a disability make to their professional and community setting. Briefs

Nicholl’s Global Role Cairns businesswoman, Fiona Nicholl has been elected to a senior role with Sai International last weekend. A former Australian President of the organisation, in 2018 Ms Nicholl was elected a Director’s role at the Skål World Congress in Mombasa, Kenya and has made history this weekend.

Terrain NRM and farmers working to improve erosion

On-line Sustainability Training for Farmers

At 39 years of age, the Cairns businesswoman is one of the youngest ever members to be elevated into the association’s Vice President position.

THERE is no taipan in your office – that’s the first message for Far Northern graziers in new workshops on the fundamentals of business management.

Mr McLean said integrating soil health and ecology with production and economics showed the clear link between ecosystem health and profitability.

Ms Nicholl, who aspires to represent Cairns in the role of World President when the next elections are held in October 2021, said she is thrilled to receive this nod from fellow Skålleagues and the tourism industry.

“The office is the last place a lot of primary producers want to be,’’ RCS farm business analyst David McLean says. “But that can change when you know more about how to look under the hood of a business.”

“Better decisions for the land are usually the result when landholders analyse their businesses and have all the information in front of them to make sound financial decisions,’’ he said.

Hosted via Zoom and live streamed via YouTube, this year’s Skål World President Peter Morrison led the Annual General Assembly on Saturday 17 October from his home in Christchurch, New Zealand. According to Ms Nicholl, the meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Rijeka and Opatija, Kvarner Region, Croatia however, due to COVID-19, was cancelled.

I N N I SFA I L

Farming families are taking a free course on Sustainable Resources and Business Management, offered by natural resource management organisation Terrain NRM as part of two land management projects in the Tablelands and Innisfail regions. Kairi grazier Kellie Evans says the course is a natural sequel to others focused on improving soil health and adopting natural grazing practices.

“Soil health and holistic grazing changes are one part of a transition – we also need to be monitoring whether our on-farm changes make financial sense,’’ she said. “We all have farm records and basic accounting practices. This is about combining records into meaningful data.”

differently. It’s like an internal audit - breaking things down to monitor each part of our enterprise and put a dollar figure on it, from soil health to cattle production. That way we can more accurately work out what our best options are for the longterm, from carrying capacity to things like fodder crops.

She says it has been an eye-opener for her family’s farming business.

“I’m not the greatest bookkeeper – I prefer to hide out with the cows – so I’m getting a lot out of it.”

“We’re looking at things a bit

“When we feel under pressure financially, quite often we work our country too hard as a result and this creates a downward spiral for land and business. This course is designed to stop that happening.” The course is part of Terrain NRM’s Upper Johnstone Integrated Project, funded through the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Investment Program, and the Herbert River Gully and Grazing Program

funded by the Australian Government through its Reef Trust Phase IV program. Both projects are focused on working with landholders to repair erosion, improve the land and reduce the amount of sediment flowing to the Great Barrier Reef. TOP TIPS FOR LANDHOLDERS Keep it simple - continuously plan, monitor and manage your financials. Make sure both your income and expenditure are considered. Monitor actual performance to analyse your budgets. Strongly link the paddock and the office. Cattle numbers, what’s changed and why are just as important in the office as the paddock.

The Federal Budget and What It Means To You DR RAY HAMEY

TAX cuts for most workers will be of great benefit for the Cairns economy. The Federal budget is designed to put more money in your pocket so that you will spend thus circulating the economy approximately 10 times as advised by economists. This appears to be a great strategy. Other key points are for those receiving pensions including family tax benefits. There will be two additional payments of $250 twice a year to pensioners, which once again, is designed to

circulate in the economy. The Federal budget is designed to drag us out of recession. The best way out of a recession is to create an environment so that people will spend a little more which will circulate the economy. This will then create jobs thus becoming a self-perpetuating solution. The Federal budget will allow a business to write off newly acquired assets instantly. This is effective in preserving the cash flow for that period of time. However, it is advised that with a rising income, that this

may not be suitable for your business. Depreciating (writing off the cost of the asset over a number of years) may not be the best strategy for the short term thus the instant asset write-off may be of great cashflow benefit for the year. Whilst the budget relies on some big assumptions, particularly with the COVID-19 vaccine being available, it is designed to stimulate the economy by providing tax cuts for just about all concerned. This will increase the spending in the local economy, thus driving Cairns out of recession.

The event will go from

9am to 1pm and the morning crew from 102.7 STAR FM will also broadcast from the shop on the day. Rocky has always had a passion for things that go fast, which started off as a child when he used to break in unbroken horses in his hometown in rural Victoria. He then became enamoured with motorcycles and had three Harley Davidsons. Now his passion is collecting clas-

sic cars, of which he has five at home. The other loves of his life are his wife and two daughters, who are local champions winning dozens of trophies in dance competitions. Rocky will have four of his classic cars on display on Saturday, so come and check them out and ask him about them! Anyone else with a classic car is also invited to bring it down and show it off.

When Rocky Giles started “We guarantee good value his battery business in a tiny 37 for money, with only high-qualsquare metre shop in 2000, he ity products, which last.” he had no idea that 20 years later said. he would be the largest mobile “I’ve based my whole busibattery service in Cairns. ness on good products, good Now located in a 375 square metre warehouse and work- service, and good after-care shop at 190 Scott Street, he for our customers, so they can says it’s his dedication to qual- contact us no matter where ity that has made his business they are and we’ll give them thrive for the past two decades. assistance.”

Always starting something TANYA MURPHY IT’S everyone’s worst nightmare: you’re supposed to be at work, and your car won’t start. Or, it dies in the shopping centre car park, or at the school drop-off. Who are you going to call? Look no further than the Fast Fit Batteries mobile service. Rocky and his team are ready come to you wherever you may be and will have you back on the road in no time. “There’s never a dull moment in this job!” said Rocky. “If someone calls us it’s usually because their car won’t start, so our average customer is not too happy

when they ring us. Our aim is to make sure they are happy when we leave them!

who are driving around Australia, I love all the stories that people tell me.”

“It’s really rewarding being able to help people and make people happy, and that’s why after 20 years I still love my work.”

When asked for his advice to anyone wanting to improve the battery setup in their car, Rocky did not hesitate for a moment: “Never trust social media!”

He said he also did a lot of work for people preparing their four-wheel-drives, boats and campers for outdoor adventures by installing solar panels, and dual-system batteries to help run things like fridges. “I get to interact with people from all walks of life, from all over the country,” he said. “From locals, to travellers

“I’ve seen people asking for tips online, and getting absolutely terrible advice which will either see them set their car on fire or at best, waste a lot of time and money on something that won’t work. “You’ll always save yourself money and stress in the long run by getting it done professionally.”

Slow down for road works

There is a roadworks sign with a speed limit of 60km/h displayed on the side of the road. There are no road workers on site currently. Does this mean the previous speed sign should be followed? You might not always be able to see the reason for a

reduced speed limit—but that doesn’t mean it’s not there

If there’s a speed limit on the sign, you have to obey it until you drive past the next speed limit sign. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is or whether or not you can see any road workers on site. Have a think about it and

please be patient. Not only could it save your life, but it could save the life of one of our road workers. They’re out there doing what they can to improve our roads and they need to get home to their families too.

Exotic Fruit Wines

SET amongst fertile cane fields and lush tropical rainforests of North Queensland, Murdering Point Winery offers a range of high-quality red and white fruit wines, ports, liqueurs and creams that are uniquely Australian and deliver an exciting and stimulating tropical taste experience. Interesting name for a winery, even more interesting is the history behind the name. The name Murdering Point originates from a shipwreck on inshore King Reef, a few hundred metres from the coast of Kurrimine Beach

in 1878, ‘The Golden Era’ the gold rush days of Northern Australia. King Reef was the undoing of a number of sailing ships that foolishly tried to use a difficult passage through the reef to the beach. The ship, the ‘Riser’, sailing north and having stopped at Cardwell, ran aground on the King Reef and was broken up by heavy seas. The shipwrecked victims gathered scant provisions and came ashore in the ship’s dingy, landing on a sandy point at the northern end of Kurrimine Beach.

They made a temporary camp for the night but that evening they were attacked, murdered and dragged by the local aboriginals into the nearby sand dunes to be partially eaten. Some weeks later, after reports of a shipwreck on King Reef, the local constabulary from Cardwell arrived to investigate and found the remains of the bodies of the shipwrecked sailors and the signs of an aboriginal camp. The investigating party, tracked down the group involved, and is attributed with naming the coastal protrusion, Murdering Point.

The winery was founded by the Berryman family in 2001, and has rapidly gained a reputation for the quality of its wines and the innovative use of a wide range of exotic tropical fruits, particularly in making wines using Australian native tropical fruit, Davidson Plum. The Berryman family has farmed sugarcane in the Silkwood region for over 60 years and winemaker William Berryman, carries on a family tradition of fruit wine production. The Berryman’s have taken great pride in the quality of their wines and decided

to share this with the world by opening of a full commercial winery on their property in 2003. The winery was built to provide quality wines for the local market and North Queensland’s burgeoning tourism market. The raw materials, sugar cane and tropical fruits, come directly from the farm and from suppliers within the district. Their vision was to provide a unique wine and tourism experience combining tastings of Bush Tucker and tropical fruit wines and ports, with the region’s history, culture and agricultural background.

This unique winery has rapidly become a leader in the use of a wide range of tropical fruits in the production of quality dry, sweet and fortified wines. The winery offers wines, ports, liqueurs and creams. Visitors can find out more from their their website: www. murderingpointwinery.com. au or the cellar door is open 7 days from 9:30 am – 5pm. Getting the perfect steak every time GETTING your steak just right is an art. You love a deep crisp crust, perfectly pink inside and still juicy as, but how do you do it? Let’s look at how to cook the perfect steak every time. Room temperature is important Take your steak out of the fridge at least 60 minutes prior to cooking, allowing it to come to room temperature. Having you steak at room temperature will avoid the issue of overcooked on the outside and still very undercooked inside. Crank up the temperature Steaks need to be seared on the outside. That crust that seals the flavour in and also allows for caramelisation to enhance the flavours. So never use a low heat. This will stew the steak and also allow the steak to dry out from overcooking. Get some serious heat into your pan and let the oil heat until almost smoking.

| 33

Cairns Local News

Leave it alone Please don’t touch it, don’t prod or move it around and do not press down on the steak. You squeeze the juices out and you will dry it out. Let the streak rest in the pan, give it time to caramelise. It’s all about timing Different cuts will take different times to cook. Meat with a bone (t-bone or ribeye) will need to cook for slightly longer than a fillet or something thin like a skirt steak. Avoid cuts reserved for slow-cooking, like chuck or blade. Get a chargrill piping hot – as in let it heat up for 10 minutes kind of piping hot. Alternatively make sure your bbq grill is preheated to high. There is no point in rushing and having a grey steak. Dress your steak with olive oil and season. If you are not going crazy with rubs or marinades, then just a coating of extra virgin olive oil and

a generous amount of salt and pepper will do the trick to season. If you do this ahead, don’t salt the meat and let it sit around for ages and this can toughen the meat. Don’t overcrowd your cooking surface. Make sure there is enough surface area to keep

hot – otherwise you will just end up simmering your steak and ending up with meat chewing gum. For a 3-4cm thick steak, cook the steak for about 3 ½ minutes on one side turning once halfway about 90 degrees to gain maximum caramelisation.

Now you can flip and repeat. Your result will be medium-rare. Have a feel of the steak, the more you get familiar with the touch of a rare, medium and well done steak, the better cook you will become! Remember it’s a muscle, so if its firm to touch, you’ve gone too far.

If it feels like a raw steak, well, you do the math. Make sure you rest your steak for half as long as you cooked it, so about 4 minutes, lightly covered in foil. This allows the juices to settle and the muscle fibres to relax, which ensures the steak is tender.

Two-time ARIA Award winner, APRA Award winner and multi-platinum album selling artist, who performs as ‘Washington’, is escaping Melbourne and flying to sunny Cairns to perform one special solo show. Since her sashay onto the music scene in the mid noughties, Washington has released hit after hit accompanied by a string of award winning albums. Over the years, Washington’s spell bounding songs have flooded our airwaves, with favourites like I Believe You Liar, Holy Moses and My Heart Is A Wheel attracting acclaim and admirers, both at home in Oz and abroad. She said her new album, Batflowers, was an exercise in trying to understand why anyone makes music at all. The show will feature hits from the new album as well as her back catalogue. Washington will be joined by supported acts Yazmindi and Greta Stanley. Tickets available on Ticketlink.com.au

STAR GUIDE AQUARIUS: You might want to review an online course to hone your skillset or research a trip you began planning that ended up on the back-burner while communicator Mercury moves backward through your ninth house of higher education and adventure from October 27 to November 3. Allowing yourself room to follow your instincts, even if you don’t have a specific big picture goal in mind, can be good for your soul now.

GEMINI: You’ll be even more eager than usual to seek out pleasurable, lighthearted, artistic endeavors and to express what’s in your heart while social Venus moves through your fifth house of romance from October 27 to November 21. If you’ve been itching to jump into a creative project or share a heartwarming experience with a loved one, now can be a sweet time to do so.

LIBRA: While your ruling planet, romantic Venus, moves through your sign from October 27 to November 21, you’ll be glowing from the inside out, charming just about anyone and everyone you interact with. This could be a wonderful time to make moves to grow your business or make deep-rooted desires known to someone special or a significant other. Pleasure, creativity, and bolstered relationships are all yours for the taking.

PISCES: You might be tempted to make an impulsive move on the job, particularly while working on a team project, on October 19 when go-getter Mars in your second house of income forms a tense square to fortunate Jupiter in your eleventh house of networking. You’ll be feeling courageous, but it might serve you best to think through the long-term results of your actions before you leap ahead.

CANCER: If you’ve been putting off addressing an ongoing emotional issue with a loved one, you might do well to finally have that necessary heartto-heart from October 27 to November 3 while communicator Mercury moves backward through your fourth house of home life. Putting your energy toward fostering—and perhaps, in some cases, even repairing—familial bonds can prove undeniably, powerfully healing.

SCORPIO: You might find yourself retracing your steps psychologically, whether that’s by talking about old wounds in therapy or writing about recurring dreams in your journal while communicator Mercury moves backward through your twelfth house of spirituality from October 27 to November 3. While this might feel uncomfortable initially, self-reflection can lead to a deeper understanding of your internal wiring, ultimately bolstering your emotional well-being.

ARIES: One-on-one time with someone special or your significant other is sure to be at the top of your mind while romantic Venus moves through your seventh house of partnership from October 27 to November 21. Because communicator Mercury is retrograde there until November 3, you might find it thrilling to recreate a trip or date night you enjoyed in the past.

LEO: While information-gathering Mercury moves backward through your third house of communication from October 27 to November 3, you might feel like wires are constantly getting crossed, and it’s extra challenging to accomplish everyday tasks that would otherwise be easy-breezy. Taking a deep breath knowing that you don’t have to check every box right now, and you’re doing your best, which is absolutely enough.

SAGITTARIUS: You’ll be fired up to pair up with colleagues, friends, or other members of your community from October 27 to November 21 while social Venus moves through your eleventh house of networking. This can also be a time in which you’re especially capable of organizing others and helping everyone get on the same page. Take advantage by banding together to work toward a noble end game.

TAURUS: Finding ways to weave your social life in with your health routine can feel gratifying while relationship-oriented Venus, your ruling planet, moves through your sixth house of wellness from October 27 to November 21.

VIRGO: You’ll be in a beneficial position to make a play for new clients, work projects, or any other professional opportunity that appeals while money-conscious Venus moves through your second house of income from October 27 to November 21. You’ll come off as even more amiable and serviceable than usual, which colleagues and higher-ups are sure to respond well to, so feel free to network your way to well-deserved financial rewards.

CAPRICORN: Going back to the drawing board on a professional endeavor could prove productive from October 27 to November 3 while communicator Mercury moves backward through your tenth house of career. Touch base with higher-ups to review your goals or do your best to tie up loose ends that could ultimately help you move the ball forward. This can be a helpful time for getting more organized and clearer on your long-term visions.

Kids love to tumble, climb and jump PETER MCCULLAGH

DEALING with an energetic youngster can be demanding for any parent. If your child seems to be forever climbing, rolling, on their hands, why not consider channelling some of that energy into a sport that challenges and harnesses their energy. South Cairns Gymnastics Club Manager, Karen Magee believes gymnastics is the ideal sport for any child. “Gymnastics will assist in developing coordination, social skills, strength and cer-

tainly help them to focus and increase their concentration. “We offer Mini-Gym classes catering for 12 month old up to two and a half year olds. Mini-gym classes are structured classes of 45 minute duration. Parents are required to participate within the class with their toddler. The coach will guide each child and their parent though a variety of circuits focusing on brain development, body awareness, social interac-

tion, cross patterning, vestibular stimulation, balance, core strength, fine motor skills and the sensory system. Early exposure to a physical development program is key to your child’s learning, development, confidence and well-being. Classes are held Monday and Friday at their Edmonton Gym. Details can be found at www.gymsportsfnq.com.au

FNQ Football weekend wrap FNQ Premiers Edge Hill United had their easiest match of their season at Tiger Park on Saturday night. The undefeated Tigers showed their class from the outset and within the first 20 minutes were 3-0 up against Leichhardt who had no answer to the Edge Hill’s brilliant combinations and superb movement off the ball. By the end of the first half the match was over, as the

Tigers went into the break 7 goals up and the Lions down to 10 men as team discipline was brought into question. The Hill sailed through the second half adding another two and Leichhardt also losing another player to seal a comfortable 9-0 win. Tigers Captain Josh De Nittis was lost for words after the match. “We didn’t think it was going to pan out this way, we

had some great sessions this week and the guys were really pumped up for this game,” he said. “The week off will give us a chance to regroup and salvage some injury issues, this is a great result but we still have room for improvement and another match to go and we’re looking forward to it.” This weekend Mareeba will take on Leichhardt at 7.30pm in Cairns to deter-

Protection of our natural resources is essential to many businesses in this region - from tourism to food production, and is central to the Greens policy platform. We care about people. The Greens will fund investment in social housing, genuinely free public health and education - by raising the royalties paid by large mining corporations and introducing a State levy on the four largest banks. Unlike the other parties, the Greens do not accept corporate donations.

This is politics done differently.

Preliminary Final Review - Saints v Cutters BRAD SINCLAIR

IF the last two times these clubs met is any indication, we are in for one hell of a Preliminary Final. The first encounter in Round 7, at the Saints home ground saw the Cutters come away with a 10 point win. Josh Barnett kicked 3 goals for the victors, whilst Cade Wellington helped himself to 4 of his own for the home side. There’s some doubt that Wellington will take his place in the Saints side tomorrow due to injury. Their second meeting, only two weeks ago was a thriller with the Saints getting up by the slenderest of margins, one point. The Cutters led all day at home and held what looked like a match winning margin of 20 points at the last break.

Dwayne Bosen was great up forward that day for the home side and booted 5 goals, the Saints will be very mindful of him in tomorrow’s do or die final. The Cutters came into the finals winning one of their last 4 games which included a 14 goal drubbing at the hands of the very side they eliminated last week, Cairns City Lions. The South Cairns coach John Tootell will take a lot of confidence from that effort which was highlighted by an incredible pressure game that didn’t allow the Lions talented outside runners any time when they had the ball.

The Saints also have a plethora of outside runners that will need to be kept in check, so you would expect a similar mindset from the Cutters this week. Undoubtedly

the

Cut-

ters, major weapon is their ruckman Jake Roach who was incredibly dominant last week and not only gave his midfielders first use, but he at times became another midfielder by taking the ball away himself and sending it forward with long kicking. The Saints on the other hand, had reasonable form coming into finals only dropping one of their last four games which to the very impressive. It will be interesting to see how Port Douglas respond tomorrow after again being soundly beaten by the Crocs in last weeks Qualifying Final, to the tune of 96 points. After going down to the Crocs in the home and away season, firstly in round 5 by 82 points and then in round 12 by 126 points they were afforded the bye the follow-

ing week which can help with the mindset of players after such heavy losses. After their Qualifying Final loss last weekend, they now meet a South Cairns side that is high on confidence.

If the Saints ruckman Zebedee Paulger can hold his own against Roach and at least halve most ruck duels and not allow him to dictate the contests, I give the Saints a real chance of getting another shot at the Crocs in the big one next week. This would give the Saints playmakers in Novy, Clarke, Messenger & McConachy a chance to give their forwards such as Travaglini, Tedmanson & Galea opportunities to kick a winning score. I will also be interested to see how the Saints playing coach Wes Glass uses himself throughout the day.

Does he play in his customary floating defender role where he sets up alot of attacking moves with his courageous marking and will he combine that by having a run through the midfield? Whatever happens in the way of strategy, it promises to be a great game and I would predict it will be as close as their past encounters this year. The team that can settle first, play smart football, not be overawed and make the most of their scoring opportunities on an often windswept Cazalys Stadium, that will get an opportunity in a Grand Final against Port Douglas who have been doing everything right.
