COMMUNITY CONNECT
COM MEM ORATIN G SINCE THE BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA
YEARS
This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea with commemorative events being held in Cardwell on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May, to remember, reflect and respect the service members who lost their lives for the cause of freedom. The weekend reflections include a remembrance service to be held on Sunday at the Coral Sea Memorial Park. The evening prior on Saturday, a dinner and dance event will be held in a style reminiscent
of the social events during war time, with the community coming together to enjoy a night of celebration and dance. The Battle of the Coral Sea is memorialised annually in Cardwell and remembers an air and naval battle fought between the Japanese Imperial Navy and U.S. and Australian Naval Forces at a critical stage of the Second World War, from 4 to 8 May 1942. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said the annual event allows

WHY DO WE SEPARATE WASTE ON THE CASSOWARY COAST? Because wet and dry waste end up in different locations! Wet waste contains putrescibles - which is a fancy word for things that can go “off”, or are likely to decay, and as this breaks down, a liquid called leachate is produced. Council has stringent environmental obligations to contain the leachate onsite. Due to our region’s unique weather conditions and soil qualities, there is an increased risk the leachate will contaminate our environment. Instead, our wet waste is sent to landfill in Mareeba for safer disposal. Dry waste however, contains a minimal amount of these putrescibles - producing a low amount of leachate and can be stored in our own landfills!

Red Bull Defiance will hit the shores of Mission Beach and surrounds again, with over 160 competitors, across 80 teams, all competing in a threeday multi-sport adventure race. Sold out in under two weeks, the event covers over 150km of the Cassowary Coast’s beautiful yet brutal terrain, the world-class endurance race features a combination of trail running, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking and mystery tasks. Based out of Mission Beach, the event will stretch from the Tully River at Cardstone, to Mena Creek and out to Dunk Island, showcasing the extreme diversity of our region. Tourism portfolio holder,
Councillor Renee McLeod, said the event presents a huge opportunity to show off our backyard and will be a great boost for our local economy. “Held for the first time in 2019 and unfortunately being postponed in both 2020 and 2021 (due to COVID-19), Council is again excited to host the event in 2022 and welcome back the Red Bull Defiance Team, competitors and their support crews and families to our region. “Recently, Council met with the Red Bull Defiance Team and Outer Limits Adventure Fitness event organisers to discuss course details, event logistics and on the ground support.
“It was exciting to hear of the work the event team has been doing locally to prepare for Red Bull Defiance 2022. “A strong focus has been to engage with local businesses and community groups and leverage their support to deliver a premium, yet local experience for competitors,” said Councillor McLeod. Sam Stedman, Director of Outer Limits Adventure Fitness said it has been great connecting and working with local community to finalise preparations for the event. “Already we have partnered local catering business Tuskers Tuckerbox and Catering and Mission Beach Surf Life Savers for their services and
facilities to create a Hub for the athletes. “Everyone has been great to work with and we are still reaching out to other community groups to assist with volunteering. “Our Team is so excited to again bring this event to the Cassowary Coast region and showcasing not only the amazing natural assets that the community is home to but also the great community members which we have come to know,” said Mr Stedman. Will the Mayor’s cup return to Innisfail this Saturday?
SUPPORTING AGRI-BUSINESSES IN THE RACE TO REMOVE FERAL PIGS
On Saturday 26 March, The Innisfail Leprechauns and Atherton Roosters will come head to head at the John Cole Toyota Mayor’s Challenge match in a battle for the Mayor’s Cup. The annual Mayors Cup game is played each year between Atherton and Innisfail and is presently held by the Atherton Roosters. Mayor Mark Nolan said the match was a hot topic in his household with his wife a staunch Roosters supporter and he is keen

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council has reaffirmed its support for local agribusinesses and peak industry bodies by reallocating $10,000 to contribute to the aerial shooting of feral pigs. Already this season, the Innisfail Cane Growers have reported over half a million dollars worth of damage to crops due to feral pig activity. Agribusiness representatives are calling for further assistance to combat feral animals within our region. Environment portfolio holder and Chair of the Cassowary Coast’s Feral Pig Executive Oversight Group (FPEOG), Councillor Jeff Baines said the FPEOG recently met to conclude the State-funded project for Panama Tropical Race 4 (TR4) and whilst the project was a success, the group identified the need to continue these projects within the region. “The program saw the eradication of over 10,000 feral pigs from the region, which has contributed to the reduction in the spread of Panama TR4. “The remaining funds of
the program, approximately $25,000, will be distributed to the Australian Banana Growers’ Council to support a 50:50 aerial shooting program available across banana and cane industries for the entire region. “Council will contribute an additional $10,000 from the natural environment-operating budget to support peak industry bodies as a co-contribution for a quick knockdown via aerial shooting projects,” said Councillor Baines. Joseph Marano, Chairman of Canegrowers Innisfail has been a driving force behind the oversight group and said he is in strong support of the group continuing in 2022. “Reforming the Feral Animal Executive Oversight Group is a key outcome and is important that Peak Industry Bodies and Council continue to work together to produce favourable outcomes for the region. “As a group we also need to be considering longerterm projects to support and protect agribusinesses and our regional economy from all feral animals,” said Mr

Marano. Tully banana grower and Australian Banana Growers’ Council Chair Stephen Lowe said continued funding of feral pig eradication in the region was crucial for the Australian banana industry, to help reduce the risk of spreading the serious soil-borne fungal disease Panama TR4. “Feral pig eradication in the Tully Valley is providing critical protection to our national banana industry, as feral pigs are known to spread Panama TR4,” Mr Lowe said. “Banana growers, industry and the government have committed significant funding to these efforts over the past five years and if we don’t continue the program we risk feral pig numbers exploding. “With our $600 million industry in jeopardy from Panama TR4, any additional funding which Council can offer to support current and future feral pig eradication will be greatly welcomed by all growers, but particularly those in the Panama TR4 incursion zone,” said Mr Lowe.
to see the cup returned to Innisfail. “I’ve personally put $200 towards the Man of the Match award and have challenged Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rod Marti to match my contribution. This will be the 21st battle of the Mayor’s and sees Innisfail with 12 wins ahead of the Roosters who have won 8 times. Game details: • Saturday March 26, Callendar Park, Innisfail from 2pm
