Cassowary Coast Regional Council has recently welcomed five new trainees and two new apprentices who have commenced work this month. Council will host the new intake of trainees and apprentices who will work across a range of Council departments. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said that this will begin a new chapter for many of the trainees and apprentices with Council being a fantastic opportunity to create a path to their desired career, through both study and practical on the job experience. “Welcoming trainees and apprentices to learn within our organisation is an integral part of Council’s contribution toward building skills for the future,” he said. “The trainees and apprentices will be working across several functions of Council operations giving them the chance to build their knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment. The skills and knowledge that trainees and apprentices will gain during their training will equip them for success in their future roles. “Our current intake is made up of recent school leavers and a person returning to the workforce. The program pre-

sents locals with the opportunity to live, work and continue to grow their skills all in the Cassowary Coast region. “Council continues to be a proud host for trainees and apprentices and as an organisation we look forward to each person having a positive impact on the community through their training with Council,” Councillor Nolan said. New trainee, Rochelle Hudson has commenced a Certificate III in Business and says she is very grateful for this opportunity. “I am looking forward this experience and how I will be able to improve, develop and use any skills I acquire within future pathways,” she said. “I’m very grateful that my team facilitates an inclusive work environment, supports trainees and uses positive team work strategies to ensure jobs are completed. “As I am a recent graduate from Good Counsel College, I see this new experience in a local government setting as a positive opening into future career prospects.” This training is proudly funded by the Queensland Government through its First Start program under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

COMMUNITY CONNECT

STAY SAFE THIS STINGER SEASON

It’s summertime in North Queensland which means it’s a perfect weather and even better conditions for marine stingers to be present on our beaches. A young boy was treated on Sunday afternoon for a potential Irukandji sting, Queensland Ambulance Service was called and the boy was transported to Innisfail Hospital. South Mission Beach has also been closed recently due to the high presence of marine stingers. With that in mind we ask the community to remain vigilant and stinger smart with these tips from North Queensland’s Life Guard Service Supervisor, Jay March, when entering local beaches during stinger season. • Stinger nets do not protect against Irukanji Jellyfish – for the best level of protection swimmers should

wear a full-body lycra suit, even in the nets. If unable to wear a suit, a rash vest is advisable. • I f stinger nets are removed, it is not safe to swim. Nets are removed for a reason which may be due to a high presence of Jellyfish or another identified risks. • Be vigilant of all beach signage and the advice of Lifeguards on duty. • Avoid swimming or climbing near the perimeters of stinger nets where Jellyfish may be present.

WATER MAIN WORKS

Cassowary Coast Regional Council wishes to advise that they will commence water main works from early February, weather permitting. Works will be undertaken on Fitzgerald, Bunda, Ryan and Benwell Streets, East Innisfail. Works are expected to take ten weeks to complete. The new water main will replace a 1933 cast iron water main, which has severe internal ferric corrosion. The new water main will improve flow and water pressure in the area. Nearby residents and motorists can expect minor traffic delays, construction noise, there may be possible temporary disruption to drive way access and temporary disruptions to water to property. Council workers will advise residents in advance of any temporary impacts to water or driveway access. There will be temporary impacts to kerbside car parks and Council will endeavour to minimise any impacts as much as possible. For the safety of workers and road users, changed traffic conditions will be in place while the works are carried out. The traveling public will see traffic control in place to maintain two way flow of traffic. Council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation during these important works.
