Cassowary Coast Regional Council has recently welcomed five new trainees and two new apprentices who have commenced work this month. Council will host the new intake of trainees and apprentices who will work across a range of Council departments. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said that this will begin a new chapter for many of the trainees and apprentices with Council being a fantastic opportunity to create a path to their desired career, through both study and practical on the job experience. “Welcoming trainees and apprentices to learn within our organisation is an integral part of Council’s contribution toward building skills for the future,” he said. “The trainees and apprentices will be working across several functions of Council operations giving them the chance to build their knowledge and skills in a supportive learning environment. The skills and knowledge that trainees and apprentices will gain during their training will equip them for success in their future roles. “Our current intake is made up of recent school leavers and a person returning to the workforce. The program pre-
sents locals with the opportunity to live, work and continue to grow their skills all in the Cassowary Coast region. “Council continues to be a proud host for trainees and apprentices and as an organisation we look forward to each person having a positive impact on the community through their training with Council,” Councillor Nolan said. New trainee, Rochelle Hudson has commenced a Certificate III in Business and says she is very grateful for this opportunity. “I am looking forward this experience and how I will be able to improve, develop and use any skills I acquire within future pathways,” she said. “I’m very grateful that my team facilitates an inclusive work environment, supports trainees and uses positive team work strategies to ensure jobs are completed. “As I am a recent graduate from Good Counsel College, I see this new experience in a local government setting as a positive opening into future career prospects.” This training is proudly funded by the Queensland Government through its First Start program under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

COMMUNITY CONNECT
STAY SAFE THIS STINGER SEASON
It’s summertime in North Queensland which means it’s a perfect weather and even better conditions for marine stingers to be present on our beaches. A young boy was treated on Sunday afternoon for a potential Irukandji sting, Queensland Ambulance Service was called and the boy was transported to Innisfail Hospital. South Mission Beach has also been closed recently due to the high presence of marine stingers. With that in mind we ask the community to remain vigilant and stinger smart with these tips from North Queensland’s Life Guard Service Supervisor, Jay March, when entering local beaches during stinger season. • Stinger nets do not protect against Irukanji Jellyfish – for the best level of protection swimmers should
wear a full-body lycra suit, even in the nets. If unable to wear a suit, a rash vest is advisable. • I f stinger nets are removed, it is not safe to swim. Nets are removed for a reason which may be due to a high presence of Jellyfish or another identified risks. • Be vigilant of all beach signage and the advice of Lifeguards on duty. • Avoid swimming or climbing near the perimeters of stinger nets where Jellyfish may be present.

WATER MAIN WORKS
Cassowary Coast Regional Council wishes to advise that they will commence water main works from early February, weather permitting. Works will be undertaken on Fitzgerald, Bunda, Ryan and Benwell Streets, East Innisfail. Works are expected to take ten weeks to complete. The new water main will replace a 1933 cast iron water main, which has severe internal ferric corrosion. The new water main will improve flow and water pressure in the area. Nearby residents and motorists can expect minor traffic delays, construction noise, there may be possible temporary disruption to drive way access and temporary disruptions to water to property. Council workers will advise residents in advance of any temporary impacts to water or driveway access. There will be temporary impacts to kerbside car parks and Council will endeavour to minimise any impacts as much as possible. For the safety of workers and road users, changed traffic conditions will be in place while the works are carried out. The traveling public will see traffic control in place to maintain two way flow of traffic. Council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation during these important works.

SMART METER READERS TO GO LIVE IN 2022
The New Smart Water Meters
Across 2021, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council converted almost a thousand existing water meters into smart water meters allowing for real-time water-use data across the region. Through the CCRC Water Portal, launching later in 2022, residents will have the ability to receive daily water-use data. This shall enable the customer to exercise more control over water use, receive more information to better understand a water bill and get improved ability to identify and fix leaks fast, reducing water loss as well as associated costs. A smart water meter device is attached to existing water meters. It collects, transmits and analyses water-usage data and digitally sends the
information to secure operational and customer digital portals. Currently, 50% of the region’s meter fleet has a smart reader, totalling over 6,000 smart meter readers. The goal is to replace 10% of the meter fleet every year. However, it is envisioned that greater than 10% smart water meter replacement will occur over the next financial years. In the first half of 2022, Council will focus on implementing smart meters in Belvedere, Stoters Hill, Pin Gin Hill, Sundown and Goondi Hill which will equate to approximately 500 more smart meters. Residents in the suburbs identified will receive a letter shortly advising on the upcoming works and what to expect.
The impact on residents and property in these areas will be minimal. Already, Council has seen the benefits of the smart meters and has been able to detect issues quickly and notify property owners accordingly. The data supplied has also allowed Council to monitor peak demands and improve planning for future upgrades. The online CCRC Water Portal will be launching later this year and is currently being trialed at a number of properties across the Cassowary Coast. Council will continue to provide updates as they occur. For further information please contact Council on 1300 763 903 or via email at enquiries@ccrc.qld.gov.au.
MISSION BEACH CARPARK UPDATE
Stage One of the Mission Beach Masterplan is steaming ahead and is due to be complete by the end of February, weather permitting. Located on the corner of Campbell Street and Endeavour Avenue, the completion of the Mission Beach Carpark, will signify a great first step in part of a much larger project. The asphalt is scheduled to start on Tuesday 25 Janu-
ary, weather permitting, with completion of the kerb, footpath and concrete infill to the internal medians to follow shortly after. The line markings will be finalised by the end of February. Council will also be planting trees around the perimeter of the carpark which will occur once the carpark is open. There has been a slight delay in this project due to asphalt
supply, however Council will work to deliver this project and have it open for the community as soon as possible. Council is currently reviewing all components of Stage Two of this key project and will apply for funding through the Federal Governments round six of the Building Better Regions Fund. Council is committed to delivering this project and updates will be provided as they occur.
