COMMUNITY CONNECT

Excellence in education

LOCAL Family Day Care owner and operator, Jasmine Sheridan has won the Excellence in Family Day Care Award 2021. Presented by Family Day Care Australia, the award recognises the amazing work done by educators, coordinators and services to deliver high quality early childhood education and care to children across Australia. Community and Culture Portfolio Holder, Councillor Trudy Tschui said it is well recognised that the home environment and small ratios of children create the best possible environment for ‘play based’ learning in young children. “It takes a lot of dedication and hard work, and it is exceptional to see one of our very own Educators recognised for her commitment. “Jasmine has shown she goes above and beyond the high standard required and often takes her group of children for walks in the rainforest, to visit local hobby farms and joins in with other childcare centres. “She also takes her children to participate in Library events such as Story Time and attends a dance and music session in Tully. “As you can imagine the risk management and planning of such excursions is a lot of extra work,

but she is passionate about Community, nature and the outdoors and wishes to share this with the children in her care,” said Councillor Tschui. “She continually strives to improve her skills both professionally and personally. She is a great communicator and keeps her families not just informed but involved in all her planning and programming. “She is a great support to new Educators and mentors where she is needed.” The Cassowary Coast Regional Council congratulate Jasmine on her dedication and commitment to early childhood education within the region. This award is well deserved recognition for the special impact Jasmine has on the lives of the children in her care. For more information, please contact Council by phoning 1300 763 903 or email via enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.

A ROARING GOOD TIME AT TROPICAL ART DECO FESTIVAL

THE Tropical Art Deco Festival has wrapped up for another year and the beloved events were once again the talk of the town from local community and visitors who attended events. Jazz, sequins, dancing, and all things vintage were abundant over the five days of events with the Cocktail Cruises, Art Deco trivia, vintage markets, Innisfail Shire Hall guided tour and Council’s supported ‘Movie Under the Stars’ showing The Great Gatsby, proving extremely popular to attendees. Tropical Art Deco Festival spokeswoman Kerry Linton said she was very pleased with the number of people in attendance over the five days with some event numbers

exceeding expectations. The commitment to costume and dressing the part were also very pleasing. “The fashions were spectacular. The community went to quite a lot of effort to dress the part, especially at the cocktail party and high tea. Overall, I’m really happy with the outcome,” said Ms Linton. Councillor and Community and Culture portfolio holder Trudy Tschui said the Art Deco Festival and its events set us apart as a region and is pleased to see it celebrated in such grandeur each year. “The events had something to peak everyone’s interest. The trivia night was great fun and with some obvious competitive rivalry

between teams in proving their art deco and historical knowledge. The high tea showcased local talent with a fashion parade, dance performances, and music and the vintage market had many treasures to be found. “The Innisfail Shire Hall guided tour was also very popular as it showcased the Shire Hall’s architectural beauty and Innisfail township history. “Overall, it was a very successful week and I want to thank everyone who was involved in the organisation of each event,” said councillor Tschui. Attendees at the one-day workshop held at the Tully Multisport Grandstand

SUPPORTING AGRITOURISM IN THE REGION LAST week, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) hosted a one-day mentoring and capacity building workshop with local farmers that are seeking to develop or expand into the agritourism space. Economic Development & Tourism Portfolio holder, Councillor Renee McLeod said the workshops aim was to inspire and provide confidence to farmers with the desire and capacity to undertake new or expanded agritourism ventures. “There were 17 farmers that registered for the oneday agritourism workshop, and during the course were encouraged to share and explore ideas, identify opportunities and challenges and gain an understanding of the regulatory processes relevant to agritourism. “This program will give agricultural businesses within the area, the foundations to diversify and move

into the tourism landscape. “From the workshop, farmers were encouraged to develop their own 100-day action plan of the next steps in developing or expanding their agritourism business. After 90 days, DAF officers will follow up on their current actions to determine what further support farmers may need. “Council is really hopeful that agritourism becomes another selling point for our area and with the support of the ‘Taste Farm Life’ campaign, believe that domestic tourists will aspire to experience farm and food tourism and achieve an overall boost to the local economy,” said Councillor McLeod. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the Queensland Government’s ‘Taste Farm Life’ agritourism campaign would encourage tourists to get off the beaten track or take a day out of

their usual beach holiday destination to discover new experiences in rural and regional Queensland. “Queensland’s handling of the COVID threat means there are opportunities for tourists to explore more of our great state and experience innovative and unique offerings from agricultural businesses that have diversified into agritourism,” Mr Furner said. “Many agribusinesses offer a variety of food and farm experiences including farm gate sales, food and wine sampling, farmer’s markets, pick-your-own fruit and veggie experiences, farm stays, and food and farm festivals and events. “These exciting and memorable holiday adventures are often within easy driving distance of coastal communities and the time has never been better for people to get a real taste of where their food comes from.” The ‘Taste Farm Life’ campaign is part of the

Queensland Government’s $2 million agribusiness diversification initiative under the Economic Recovery Plan to build capability and explore potential diversification opportunities in agricultural businesses, including for tourism. DAF Principal Agribusiness Development Officer, Angelika Ziehrl said the Cassowary Coast Council is integral to agritourism development in the region and has supported this workshop and project from the outset. “Farmers interested in agritourism business development can contact the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries,” said Angelika Ziehrl. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries can be reached via email at agritourism@daf.qld.gov.au, phone at 13 25 23, by the Queensland Government’s one-stop service for development and investment in agriculture or by visiting the Taste Farm Life website.

LINDSAY FAMILY BENCHES

A WONDERFUL good news story has come from Tully in regards to the re-locating and refurbishment of previously donated chairs by the Lindsay Families. Councillor Teresa Millwood was contacted by Mr Ted Lindsay about a public bench that had been donated by him and his family for public use, some years ago. Cr. Millwood followed up on this concern and with the assistance of Council staff they were able to locate the benches and Council staff resurrected the bench to its former glory. Cr. Millwood reached out to the Tully Nursing Home who accepted the offer to rehouse the bench for the benefit of their residents. Council installed them at the Nursing Home with the Lindsay’s family blessing and can now be enjoyed by all residents.

SEWER RELINES

COUNCIL wishes to advise of Sewer Rehabilitation works which have recently commenced in the Innisfail CBD and South of the Tully CBD areas. Affected residents and businesses for these works have been notified via letter drop. While these works are undergone, Contractors may also visit door to door to make residents aware of their need to enter on site or on a residents premises. The aim of these works will reline the sewers which will reduce ground water infiltration. The scope of works is aimed to be completed by the end 2021. Council would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation during this time.

SHADE SAIL READY FOR SUMMER

THE installation of the shade sail at the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre has been completed and the billabong and splash pool is once again open and ready to use just in time for summer. Division Three representative for the Mission Beach area, Councillor Trudy Tschui said the project is a milestone for the whole community and finalises all work planned for the facility.

“The shade sail was the final piece to be completed for the overall facility. “Positioned over the billabong and splash pool, the new shade sail will provide a much-needed barrier from the harsh Far North Queensland sun. “The works began in November, however due to issues including complexity in the site and supply issues due to COVID, there were

some significant delays. “I am proud to say that today the project is now complete and can be enjoyed fully by the community,” said Councillor Tschui. “Thank you to all residents for your patience as we worked to provide the community a facility that is sun-safe and can be enjoyed by everyone, across all seasons.” The shade sail was proudly funded by the

Queensland Government through the Works for Queensland program. For more information on opening hours for the Mission Beach Aquatic Centre call Council at 1300 763 903 or visit Council on our website at https://bit.ly/39u9ptH. Alternatively you can contact the facility directly at 4068 7256.

Bells Creek and Cardwell go automatic FROM 1 October 2021, the Cassowary Coast Regional Council Waste Transfer Stations at Bells Creek and Cardwell are moving to an automated system, the first of its kind to be used in the region. Increasing accessibility and functionality, residents will now have access to these facilities 7-days a week (Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm and Saturday / Sunday 9am – 4pm), thanks to new, innovative systems. Waste Management and Innovation Portfolio Holder, Councillor Teresa Millwood, said in order to move to an automated system, both Bells Creek and Card-

well facilities will receive a number of upgrades that use technology to improve the performance of the facilities. “The technology installed creates a facility that is completely autonomous and self-sufficient and doesn’t rely on staff to operate effectively. “Patrons will receive automated access through a unique pin and will be able to dispose of waste accordingly. “There will be a reporting system installed which records and captures data on the waste disposal occurring at the facilities. “A new security system and intercom will also be installed, which will connect patrons to Waste Transfer Officers work-

ing in other locations in our region, who will be able to assist with any questions or issues,” said Councillor Millwood. “By updating these facilities to automated service, Council hopes residents can more readily use these facilities at a time that suits them best,” said Councillor Millwood. “There will also be no changes to site usage, domestic allowances or fees and charges for the remainder of the financial year.” Residents within the Bells Creek or Cardwell Waste Transfer Station Catchment Areas will begin to receive information in the mail about the changes this week.
