e are lucky to live in paradise. So let’s celebrate life in the tropics, our past, our present and our future. This year we build on the foundation set in 2013 when we refocused Cairns Festival to be a celebration of our community with an emphasis on showcasing our amazing local talent. With that in mind, we have partnered with some of the city’s best live music venues to provide even more opportunities for both established and emerging artists to perform. Added to this is the Buskers Stage – a perfect platform for wouldbe performers to find an audience. Central to the festivities are the ever-popular Grand Parade and Carnival on Collins, along with a bigger and even better Fields of Fire (Mario’s Burn). Add to this the Children’s Festival, Fluent – a day of youth-based activities – a wealth of exhibitions, theatre, dance and comedy. In keeping with the family-friendly program, the vast majority of Festival events are free, making it a truly accessible celebration for everyone in the Cairns region and our visitors. Council and the Cairns Festival Committee encourage everyone to get on board. Celebrate Paradise. Celebrate our community. And celebrate life.

31 DIAFRIX

Diafrix

Time: 7.40-8.30pm Location: Progig Stage

Presenting the strikingly unique African-born hip-hop duo Diafrix. Hailing from the Melbourne suburb of Footscray Diafrix comprises frontmen Momo and Azmarino, African refugees who have lived through struggles that are worlds apart. Momo arrived in Australia with his family at the age of three after fleeing their homeland of the Comoros Islands. Azmarino, on the other hand, hails from Eritrea but didn’t arrive in Australia until earlier this decade – after a life of citizenship hunting throughout countries like Jordan, Italy and Switzerland. Definitely not the typical story of an Australian band but one that reflects an under represented and growing community of first-generation Australians. The duo’s second album, Pocket Full of Dreams, features an important, ongoing theme for Diafrix as a group – representing the hope and dreams of those who don’t have a voice, in turn becoming inspiring examples of two dreamers overcoming hardship and obscurity to realise their own.

FIELDS OF FIRE MARIO’S BURN SEPTEMBER

6

Day: Saturday 6 September Time: 3-7.30pm Tickets: free entry but you need a ticket from TicketLiNK*

After an overwhelming response to last year’s event Fields of Fire – Mario’s Burn is back, bigger and better, with plenty of food stalls, more entertainment and ticketed to avoid disappointment. As the sun sinks over the mountains Yorkey’s Knob will be ablaze with light - literally. Fields of Fire – Mario’s Burn reignites our agricultural past with a traditional cane burn. While flames rising over the paddocks was a common sight a generation ago modern farming practices have done away with the spectacle that was once an iconic symbol of the Far North. Bringing the tradition back to life, for one night at least, Fields of Fire-Mario’s Burn is a family friendly event with a raft of supporting activities. Fom 3pm the main stage revs up with the Hillbilly Goats and Aria-nominated country icons Kevin Bennett and The Flood. 3-6pm the Doyle Family Fun Show will entertain with music, face painting and fun. Pony rides and the mechanical bull will cater for both ends of riding skill while families can enjoy animal interaction with Zoo to You or relax by the camping fire. The day will culminate in the cane burn on sunset complete with pyrotechnics.

*Due to the success of last year’s event and limitations regarding parking and site capacity, Fields of Fire will be ticketed. One ticket per car, tickets available at TicketLiNK.
