In this book, we celebrate the artistic works of local youth who designed murals and beautified local public spaces from Babinda in the south, to Trinity Beach in the north as part of the Youth Urban Art Project. The project was proudly supported by Cairns Regional Council and funded through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions program.

Hundreds of children and young adults brought their skills, enthusiasm and ideas to the Youth Urban Art Project in 2018 and 2019, resulting in colourful depictions of community, local history and pure flights of imagination being created on buildings, walls and skate parks in 10 suburbs. The project was facilitated by professional and emerging artists with involvement of young people aged 12 to 25. As well as engaging young people in healthy artistic expression, the project has fostered a sense of connection and ownership over the mural sites and, we hope, encouraged young people to consider future opportunities in the arts and cultural industries. The young people involved in the Youth Urban Art Project have created something that will be enjoyed by the whole community and will give them a real sense of pride and connection to their local area. THE PROJECT The Youth Urban Art Project - Pride of Place - illustrates stories of the Cairns suburbs through the eyes of the young people who live there. Inspiration for the murals came from many different sources. Children and young people drew on the recent history of their suburbs, activities, objects and animals in their environment, their experiences and loves, and mixed it in with colour and imagination to create murals that tell their own stories about their own places. The Youth Urban Art project brought together experienced local street artists, emerging artists and young people, aged under 25. Together, they developed concepts and co-designed large-scale murals in 10 suburbs: Babinda, Gordonvale, Edmonton, Woree, Earlville, Manoora, Redlynch, Machans Beach, Yorkeys Knob and Trinity Beach. The resulting murals reflect the diverse cultures and interesting features of the different areas. Cairns Regional Council celebrates Pride of Place with this collection of art and images as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to our partners and all participants.

‘Up top’ is a mural artwork that focuses on peer congratulations and encouragement. This is represented by the ‘high five’, a widely recognised gesture for positive reinforcement.

A fun and prehistoric lost world filled with dinosaurs, crocodiles and volcanoes was created in Todd Park in Edmonton (or E-town, as the young artists preferred to call their suburb).

The black cockatoos that frequent Sandown Close were the inspiration for the Woree mural. Children painted individual cockatoo feathers in bold colours around the wording, ‘Sandown Community’.

The focal point of the Machans Beach mural is Bully the bull, who, until recently, lived in Machans after he was washed down in Cyclone Rona in 1999. Also featured are machine propellers to illustrate the WW2 history and the proximity to the airport.
