THE DAVIS’S Home office design

LAYOUT The brief was to create a stylish, elegant yet bold home office space for The Davis’s with separate desks and work areas. An abundance of storage was paramount, therefore, I suggest a floor to ceiling custom fitted cabinet on the west wall which will house a smart TV in the centre with wireless router and printing equipment inside the adjacent cabinets.

The two extending cabinets on the north and south are dual lateral filing cabinets for document storage. Atop one cabinet is a coffee machine that uses Lavazza PODS.A bar fridge is located in one of the bottom cupboards of the wall unit to house milk and cold beverages. The east wall inhabits a custom wall-to-wall desk with dual draws in the centre, defining each person’s space. A central rug softens the floor around the reading space of the comfortable chair and separate side table. Wall lamps offer ambient light for reading or TV usage which also doubles as a presentation platform.

ELECTRICAL LAYOUT Here is a closer look at the electrical layout.

Two switches are found at the entry door. One connects all the down lights and is on a dimmer with the other having 4 separate switches for each of the wall lights. The wall lights emit a soft warm glow whereas the down lights offer maximum light or a soft dimmed all round glow in cool white. All power points are hidden within cabinetry. The desk points are accessible via a door cut into the back of the desk to hide unsightly plugs along with a phone point at each desk. The only power point that can be seen is actually hidden behind the coffee machine on the filing cabinet top.

All printers and computer equipment are wireless so there is no need for the printer to take up desk space. It is tucked away in the wall cabinet.

COLOUR SCHEME The wall colour is a warm white from Wattyl called Quaker White. It melts from the walls into the benchtops like a vanilla ice-cream and acting as a peaceful backdrop, it creates a canvas to uplight the room to allow light to flood the walls. The desk top and counter tops for the filing cabinet and TV unit are in 20mm bull nose Nuvo Calcutta from Caesarstone. This is a hard wearing yet low maintenance counter top that offers superior wear and stain resistance. These selected finishes will stand the test of time. The custom cabinetry resembles a shaker style door and is painted in Wattyl’s ‘Oak Leaf’ with a matt 2-pak finish. This denotes a traditional style that oozes elegance. Antique finish brass knobs and handles offer a strikingly beautiful contrast on the cabinety doors and draws. Natural linen blend fabric suits the armchair and desk chairs whilst the plain black and patterned cushions offer relief. A grand geometric patterned rug adds bold interest and breaks up the space between the desks and the wall cabinet library. This rug is designed by Australian interiors superstar Greg Natale, well known for his elegant yet bold schemes. Aged oak and black timber flooring offers a traditional and old world feel to the entire space. It also very well wearing and easy to maintain.

OVERVIEW

WEST WALL ELEVATION In the middle of the cabinet sits a smart TV that can link directly through WI-FI to the computers at the other end of the office. Great for presentations or seeing something larger as required, the TV is a high definition LED LCD and yes, it can also show regular TV and movies. Hidden inside the floor to ceiling wall cabinet is a wireless A3 printer/scanner, wireless router, mini bar fridge and a small fire resistant and secure safe. With wireless technology peaking, there’s no need to have any computer equipment on show sitting on desk tops and taking up valuable space. All they need is a little ventilation and the large spaces of the cabinetry certainly can account for this.

NORTH WALL ELEVATION The wall cabinet extends to include dual lateral filing. There is more than enough filing space here for general personal paperwork but also small business files. Twin small extendable wall lamps offer a warm glow for reading for ambience. Perfectly situated next to the reading chair and each desk space for individual use. The blinds are Holland blinds in a linen blend with a black stripe at each end. The blind, picture frames rug and cushions all tie in with the black and white theme for accessories.

EAST WALL ELEVATION The desk runs along the entire width of the room, leaving the ends equipped for personal computer space. The ASUS all-in-ones offer wireless technology including wireless mice and keyboards so no cables are seen except for the power cable which runs into the cable hole behind each screen.

Underneath both desk spaces, behind a cabinet door at the back is a quad power point and phone point. As all the pc equipment is hidden in the wall cabinet, the additional 3 points will be plenty for any additional hardware, phone or laptop charging stations or future electronic devices such as a clock radio for instance.

SOUTH WALL ELEVATION Along with additional artwork and the secondary filing cabinet, you can find a great place for a coffee machine that uses PODs. It makes real coffee from pre-ground beans contained in little “PODs or capsules, which means, you only need a small bin after use which can be hidden in the cabinet, along with a pitcher, glasses and tea set.

CABINETRY DETAILS The next few pages show the cabinetry details that you can provide to your local joiner or Lemlex joinery who I have specified for the work. These cabinets have been designed to suit all the specified appliances with ample room for filing and further storage items.

CABINETRY DETAILS

The cabinet bench top height and the desk benchtop heights are the same. The filing draws include 8 sectionals per wall, which is more than enough filing space for years to come.

CABINETRY DETAILS

Each person has four draws each to store items such as pens and pencils, notepaper, a stapler and other general office accessories. Storing such items in these draws keeps the desk top clutter free so all projects have a fresh start. Here you can also see the cabinet door at the back of the desk that hides all those pesky cables. The desk tops have cable cover to feed cords from the desk top to the hidden cupboard.

CABINETRY DETAILS The filing cabinet is also mirrored on the south wall and equals a total of 16 filing sections!
