Huge thank you to Kenny Coskey for taking the time from his day to show us his bees and share some of his amazing honey.
the bee project.
The African honey bee is a sub species of the western honey bee located in central and southern Africa.
During our first week in Mossel Bay, we were given the opprotunity to get hands on experience with the African honey bee. Kenny Coskey, a local South African and bee farmer, took us to three honey bee hives in Mossel Bay. He helped myself and my fellow intern don our suits to prevent the bees from stinging us. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a suit for our mentor and he was stung a few times.
Kenny was able to show us how to extract the honey from the hives without hurting the bees and also how to get them out of the hives to be able to extract the honey initially. He took the time to explain how the hives work and how bees are assigned different jobs. He made it clear that we were in the bee’s world, not that they were in ours.
