Section title Background Summary
Lecturer Paul Morris
Background The Red Bluff is a surf beach located between Lakes Entrance and Lake Tyres in East Gippsland, 4 hours east of Melbourne. Known as the “Bluff” to locals it is a popular spot for surfers as it has an exposed reef break. The beach is not patrolled and is fairly quite compared to the Main and Eastern beach in Lakes Entrance which gets very crowed with tourist in the Summer. The name The Red Bluff comes from the red coloured cliff face and rocks that stretch for kilometres. As the beach isn’t patrolled it can be quite dangerous for swimmers and surfers to be alone due to the reef, unpredictable surf conditions and sharks. Surf competitions are also held there with Surfing Victoria and there is the Red Bluff Boardriders Club.
Six Aspects The Bluff The Bluff is a red colured cliff face that faces towards the ocean. Parts of the cliff is unstable and it is recommended to visitors to not climb it for their safety.
Look out The Look out is a two part wooden balcony located in the carpark of The Red Bluff and faces out towards the beach. It us used to check out the conditions of the surf instead of having to walk up and down the 500 metre track to the beach.
Waves The waves are the main attraction for the beach. On a good day the swell can reach up to 10 feet (3 metres).
Surfing The beach is a hot spot for surfers and is one of the better beaches to surf at compared to surrounding beaches due to the swell and is rarely crowded.
Rocks The beach is lined with rocks that have fallen from the cliff and have been washed up by the ocean. It is always changing and the beach can be covered entirely or partially by rocks.
Carvings The cliff face and rocks are lined with messages and carvings from visitors. The cliff also has natural carvings made from the harsh elements during Winter and Summer.

THE RED BLUFF
THE RED BLUFF
THE RED BLUFF Bebas Nue Regular was used originally for the type development of the logo.
Originally a sans serif typeface was going to be used for the logo instead of a serif typeface as it would fit the logo design more. After second thoughts hand writing the name was explored as it communicated the surf culture theme better.

When combining the symbol and type together the focus was on the placement of the type. Having the type placed inside of the surfboard and at the start of the wave drew the eye across to see the whole symbol for what it is.

The 4 colours chosen for the logo was red, blue, white and black. These colours were chosen as the blue represents the ocean, the red represents the red cliff face and the white and black helps to communicate the positive and negative space in the logo.

When refining the final logo combination mark the placement of the type inside the wave was going to be too small and unreadable for the 30 - 50 mm scale logo. The typography had to be changed and the placement of it was further explored by being placed on top of and underneath the surfboard. The final type was also changed back to Bebas Nue Regular from the handwritten type as it had more structure and fitted the style of the logo. Whereas the handwritten type was too crafted and the surfboard and wave symbol didn’t have the same crafted feel and clashed against each other. The final logo communicates that The Red Bluff is a beach with the wave symbol that cuts into the surfboard symbol. The surfboard represents that it is a surfing spot and that surfers are welcomed there.

When developing the design for the poster there was originally two options created. The first one was having an arrangement of surfboards dancing and waves behind them moving. But this felt overwhelming and that to many things were going on. So the second option was chosen which had waves moving back and forth. The arrangement of how many waves and how they moved was then further developed.

Section title Final Animated Poster With Final Mark
Lecturer Paul Morris
Student Caitlin McNamara 100581178 Tuesday 10.30am Page 13
The final animated poster is fairly simple with 3 waves continuously moving in different directions. The logo was inverted to white and placed in the corner of the poster as it was the best placement option and stood out as well as allowing for the top of the poster to have white space.
