Halloween Inspirations! The October issue of Cake Masters Magazine is here and we have packed it full of interviews, recipes, tutorials and so much Halloween inspiration!

I must tell you about a very special interview with the judges from Cake International, Brian Taylor and Alan Shipman who have a very frank and open conversation about life as a judge at - for what is (in our opinion) the best sugarcraft show in the world – Cake International. They talk to us about their backgrounds, how they feel about innovation, how marking works, what categories they love and hate to mark, social media, favourite competition cakes, controversies, and so much more. A very big thank you to both judges for giving me the time to interview and gain a fantastic insight into Cake International competitions.

Sticking with Cake International, back for another issue, we interview a selection of winners from CI London 2014 and find out more about the cakes entered, inspirations, struggles, judges feedback and feelings about awards achieved – a must read if entering! As we took so many photos at both the Manchester and London shows, we have created two FREE photo e-books showing a large selection of the competition cakes now available to download FREE from our website and in AppStores.

Also in this issue are two fabulous tutorials, a creepy skull cake and in contrast a very cute vampire modelling tutorial. We have exclusive insights into two collaborations too – The Festival of Lights and Sugar Spooks V.2. We are such fans of collaborative efforts and love seeing amazing creations made out of sugar and cake. Next, we are excited to tell you how you can win the chance to meet Mary Berry at afternoon tea at the BBC Good Food Bakes & Cakes show later this month – and while on the subject of afternoon tea, Jen writes a bumper review covering three delightfully different afternoon teas. Enjoy this issue!

INTERVIEW

Brenda Walton

From Sugar High Inc. By Cake Masters Magazine

Instructor and cake artist Brenda Walton from Sugar High Inc. is known for her cute, whimsical fondant toppers and clean finishes that make her one of the best in this area of modelling. We had the pleasure of interviewing Brenda in this month’s issue of Cake Masters Magazine. Tell us about you and your family I was born in Thailand and my father was in the military. I have been fortunate enough to have lived in several places all over the world and finally settled down in Virginia, USA where I met my husband, Doug. We have been married almost 10 years and have a daughter Taylor who is 5. I also have a son Caleb who is 20 from a previous marriage. Yikes! I can’t believe he will be 21 this year. My kids are my pride and joy!

How would you describe your decorating style in three words? My style in three words would be: clean, cute and whimsical.

Re

When did you start your caking career? I tried my hand at making my daughter’s first birthday cake in 2010 and fell in love with fondant! I loved it so much I officially went into business thinking I wanted to make cakes in June, 2011. Soon after, I realised that what I loved most was creating fondant figures and little cute characters. I knew this little niche was what I wanted to be doing because it made me happy and, even better, it was making others happy as well! Score! That’s the best part, it is my Sugar High!

What is your background - have you always done cakes full time? Gosh, my background includes working in the health insurance field for seven years, a little bit in the collections field for a year and then starting a printing company in 2006, where I have and still do work full time. So cakes and then fondant have always been my side “job”, if you will.

BBC Good Food BAKES & CAKES SHOW 25 -27 OCTOBER 2014

Cake Masters Magazine is very excited to be media partner with the first ever BBC Good Food Bakes & Cakes Show to be held at the BDC in Islington, London on Saturday 25th – Monday 27th October. We met with the organisers of the show to find out more about what’s in store over the weekend and, most importantly, to find out more about the chance to win a meet and greet with Mary Berry at Afternoon Tea! The key feature which we are most excited about is the Bakes & Cakes Theatre where visitors can see Mary Berry, Mich Turner, John Whaite, Paul Hollywood, Eric Lanlard, Lisa Faulkner and other expert bakers sharing the tips of their trade and watch baking live. Seats in the auditorium are included with your admission ticket, so no extra cost there! 16

MAGAZINE

ISSUE 25 | OCTOBER 2014

Make sure you check out the Theatre Timetable to find out when your baking heroes are on stage and book tickets early to secure the session you want! There are options to upgrade to Gold or Premium tickets for a closer, or even a front row seat. As it’s half term, they are also giving half price entry tickets for under 16s on Saturday and Sunday and completely free entry for under 16s on Monday (half term). So it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to the world of baking.

The show will have a good focus on learning new baking and cake making skills, trends, techniques and inspiration. You will be able to join in on interactive sessions like the sugar crafting workshops from Culpitt and Cake Craft World stand. Best of all, Eric Lanlard, John Whaite, Tim Kinnaird, Holly Bell and other great names will each be holding a stepby-step masterclass demonstrating their own specialist techniques. We are particularly looking forward to the Interview Stage section of the show, an opportunity to see your idols live and up close, and get your burning questions answered. You’ll also be wowed by the professionals in the Cake Parade too. Something definitely not to be missed; so many stars, so little time! For more information visit

Winning Interviews Back for another issue, Cake Masters Magazine interviews a selection of winners from Cake International, London 2014. Entering an exhibit into a Cake International competition can be an emotional, challenging but rewarding experience. We love putting together this regular feature, where competitors give us insight into their pieces, their inspirations, struggles and how they feel about their overall award.

Jacqui Kelly Totally Sugar

Award: Gold, 1st Best in Class, Best in Show Category entered: Small Decorative Exhibit

Tell us about your exhibit: He was originally created to enter the large decorative exhibit category and should have been a pastel coloured Easter hare standing next to a large chocolate egg. Once I had made him I was not happy as pastels are not really my thing and he looked rather insipid, so I stripped all his ‘clothes’ off and started again. Unfortunately during the stripping process, I had to cut his legs down as I accidentally chopped a section out on one side, so he became more of a rabbit and less of a hare. As soon as I started to redress him, he turned to the ‘dark side’ and I completed the look with steampunk accessories and a top hat. He had the most amazing base to stand on next to his egg, but in the wee small hours in the morning of Cake International I had to make a snap decision in order to get him finished and cut the base and egg. Hopefully this would move him from the large decorative exhibit into the small decorative exhibit class - the rules stipulate a 12’’ cube for this class so at 3am I had to chop his ears down to fit (just as well that his legs had already got shorter).

How do you feel about winning Best in Show? I was thrilled to get Gold again and over the moon with Best in Class which was my highest award to date. I sat in the prize giving ceremony willing them to announce my name for Best in Show, repeating my name over in my head - so much so that when they did announce it I didn’t move as I was not certain they had actually said my name. I was emotionally overwhelmed! Instead of politely shaking hands with the judge, I flung my arms around him and gave him a hug.
