Brussels Street Photography Festival The Brussels Street Photography Festival -BSPF- is a cultural project whose objective is to promote Street Photography as an urban research tool, form of cultural communication and as a visual art. For the BSPF, Brussels is not only the perfect host city, but also the main source of inspiration. Being a local city with a global projection, Brussels does not express itself through a single recognizable image. To identify the image of a city with such a unique condition is an interesting challenge. The main ambition of the BSPF is to go deeper into the research of those visual elements that define the contemporary identity of Brussels in two dimensions: from a local and a global perspective. The first edition of the BSPF was accomplished in 2016 with the support of different organizations and local institutions based in Brussels. The BSPF is an original project of the NGO-ASBL-VZW CAKRI, the Brussels Newsroom and WorldSP.co

Project Description

Brussels is a complex and challenging city with many geopolitical and cultural layers. The Brussels Street Photography Festival is a project that seeks to reveal the potentials of such a unique urban setting. The BSPF is cultural event deeply rooted in the urban context of Brussels, understanding that the contemporary identity of Brussels has two dimensions, a local character and a global projection. To explore Brussels’ local and global condition, the content of the BSPF is structured around two parallel street photography contests: On the local level, Brussels citizens passionate about photography are invited to look deeper into the essence of the capital of Europe, to capture the intimacy of the inner dynamics and to share with a broader audience the discoveries of their urban introspection. On the global level, the finest world street photographers are invited to submit their best captured and spontaneous moments.

Expo BSPF 2016 at Galerie Ravenstein, Brussels © Dani Oshi

The entries for both contests are judged by prominent photographers. The selections of the best images from both contests are displayed from Brussels to a greater audience both online and in a physical location. The two contests are launched at least four months in advance to the opening of the festival. The exhibition is followed by a carefully curated three-day cultural program that includes lectures, workshops, round-tables and portfolio reviews – bringing together knowledgeable photographers, local photography collectives and people interested in street photography as well as those interested in documentary photography and photojournalism.

Mission Brussels is considered the most cosmopolitan city in Europe. With its rather modest urban scale and strong local culture, Brussels is nevertheless one of the most geopolitically relevant cities worldwide.

The program of the first edition of the Brussels Street Photography Festival featured workshops, lectures, photo walks, exhibitions and projections by the following high level group of internationally recognized photographers.

Despite the historical efforts to define the image of Brussels around its “capital labels, what even better defines Brussels identity is the multiple numbers of languages spoken on its streets, the gastronomic variety offered by its neighborhoods and its cultural and ethnical diversity. The true image of Brussels is best represented by the richness of its urban landscape. However, beyond its picturesque palaces and the iconic skyline of office towers, the best portraits of Brussels are the ones captured in its streets, the common ground for different cultures, the space where citizens construct their daily lives. For the BSPF, Brussels is not only the perfect host city, but also the main source of inspiration. The main ambition of the BSPF is to provide an international platform that looks at Brussels through the fresh eyes of its citizens, visitors and engaged photographers. Vision Street photography is a widely discussed genre of photography which documents daily life in a candid way, without altering the flow of the situation and often plays with juxtapositions, lights, shadows, shapes, characters and usually involves a human essence. Street photography has generously allowed all of us to observe society in many places of the world and at different times in history, by preserving the beauty of unrepeatable instances in human life. The BSPF seeks to promote Brussels as the European capital for the street photography movement, in order to contribute with the projection of Brussels as an international cultural hub.

BSPF Preview

BSPF Preview 17-18 September, 2016. Huis VDH, Bonnefooi, Brussels. The preview of the BSPF works as a prelude to explore the possibilities of the festival as a cultural event. The preview showed for a full weekend all the photos submitted to the International Singles contest and the Brussels Singles contest received before Monday, September 12, hence giving an opportunity to all participants to have their work printed and displayed in the very heart of Brussels. Other than the printed photos, there were four projectors displaying the photos of all participants. Three were placed inside the Huis VDH and one was projected in the street on the wall of Ancienne Belgique, so street passers-by were able to see the photos even if they were not attending the Preview. The Preview was a carefully organized event featuring not only the BSPF participants but also some music groups that were invited to participate, giving the event a unique energy of photography, music, displays and nightlife.

Photography Contests

BSPF International and Brussels Contests The BSPF was based around two photography contests which are subdivided into two subcategories each. The contests being: Brussels Singles, Brussels Series, International Singles and International Series. Each contest is treated and judged differently and participants were free to apply to each contest separately. A fee is required in order to participate and the amount varies according to the amount of photos submitted for the category applied. A maximum of 10 photos is accepted for submission in each contest. For each contest, a panel of curators selected the best images submitted which then are printed and exhibited in large format for the exhibition of the BSPF, these images were considered as the finalists for the contests and were eligible to winning each contest according to its category. The winning images then were selected by a panel of judges, photographers expert on the field that have been into street photography for many years. The winners received a monetary prize, recognition and exposure through the BSPF communication channels. The curators, jury and winners can be found on our Cast section bellow. Social Media Contests Everyone who participated to the International Singles contest or the Brussels Singles contest was automatically participating in the Social Media contest, which consisted in a public online gallery where people were allowed to cast a vote on their favorite photos. The photo with the most votes on each category was awarded the Social Media award.

Exhibitions

Exhibition 28 October - 11 November 2016. Galerie Ravenstein, Brussels. The main exhibition for the BSPF showed the work of the selected finalists from the contests in a curated manner at the Galerie Ravenstein for two full weeks. There was also a secondary exhibition featuring some of the work of the BSPF guests. Both exhibitions were open to all public for FREE from Friday 28th October 2016 until Friday 11th November 2016. The main exhibition was made in a rather unconventional and rare setting, taking advantage of the steel structure hanging above the Galerie Ravenstein. Wooden panels with the photos attached to them were used on the circled area of the gallery hanging with red ropes from the steel structure, making a highly visual impact on the visitors of the exhibition. Many passerbys were automatically attracted to this uncommon setting, hence giving more exposure to the art being shown. The exhibition also featured the work of three different collectives, which were highlighted using photo projections in one of the spaces available inside the Galerie Ravenstein, making the experience of the visitor richer and more engaging. The opening of the exhibition had visitors from many places, bringing photographers, enthusiasts and the general audience together with music, drinks and a carefully curated set-up featuring artists from all over the world.

Workshops

Workshops. From October 26 to November 11, 2016. Brussels. There were three different workshops organized in the occasion of the BSPF. These three workshops explored street photography as a medium of expression and gave the participants a more insightful view about photography through the eyes of their tutor and the other participants. The workshops served as a core activity of the festival in which the participants had the opportunity to explore the city of Brussels during their tutoring. Naturally, they worked as an incentive to bring more photographers to the city and engage with the BSPF. Participants had to pay a fee in order to take part in the workshops. The three workshops were: Magnum workshop by Bieke Depoorter and Harry Gruyaert. 26-30 October 2016. The Art of Storytelling by Vineet Vohra. 28-30 October 2016. Street Photography workshop by Nick Turpin. 31 October - 2 November 2016.

Magnum Workshops: team and presentations Š Dani Oshi

Participants from the two first workshops had the opportunity to showcase their work created during their tutoring on the last day of the festival (Sunday, October 30), showing up to 10 images per participant in a photo projection before the key-note of Bieke Depoorter. This was yet another incentive for them as their work would have been seen by a wider audience during the presentation.

Photo Walks

Photo walks 29-30 October, 2016. Different locations in Brussels. The photo walks for the BSPF were organized activities in which one of our guest photographers would walk around the city of Brussels with a group of participants/enthusiasts in order for them to get an insight of the guest photographer while taking photos on the streets together, hence, making it a unique learning experience for both the guest photographer and the participants. Participation to the photo walks was for free. Photo walks on Saturday, October 29, 2016: 12:00 - 15:00 - Photo walk by Otto Snoek. 12:00 - 15:00 - Photo walk by Paul Russell. 12:00 - 15:00 - Photo walk by Stadsbiographie. Portfolio Critiques

Portfolio Critiques 29-30 October, 2016. Museum BELvue, Brussels. The portfolio critiques were organized discussions in the occasion of the BSPF in which one of our guest photographers would meet with another photographer/enthusiast which would bring their portfolio to the table and they would talk about it over a period of an hour. This exchange gives the participant an insightful critique about their work viewed by an experienced photographer on the field, an invaluable resource for the participant to improve their photography. Participants need to pay a fee in order to take part in the portfolio critique. There were two portfolio critiques happening on Saturday, October 29 by guest photographers Tomasz Lazar, and Kristin Van den Eede and Kristof Vande Velde (together).

Nick Turpin (UK) Since studying Photography at the University of Westminster in London and throughout his career with The Independent Newspaper and as an Advertising Photographer, Nick has been fascinated by ’the moment’ and considers Street Photography to be the greatest challenge he ever undertakes with a camera. In 2000 Nick founded the first Street Photographers group iN-PUBLiC which has played a major role in the popular global resurgence of Street Photography as a form. Nick’s most recent project, a four year study by Hoxton Minipress on the 17th November. Jens Olof Lasthein (SE) was born 1964 and has been working as a freelance photographer since 1992. He has held about 50 solo exhibitions around the world and published three books: Moments in Between about the Balkan wars in the 90ies, White Sea Black Sea about the borderland between eastern and western Europe, Home Among Black Hills with pictures from Charleroi in Belgium. His fourth book, Meanwhile Across the Mountain with pictures from the Caucasus will be published in January 2017 and will include the series from Abkhazia with which he won the Leica Oscar Barnack Award in 2010. Otto Snoek (NL) works as a documentary photography in a radical aesthetic way. He is interested in “the street” only to witness the more abstract processes that are taking place in society as a whole. His themes are about metropolitan culture in Western societies and can be categorized under the heading of “slow journalism”. Snoek moves preferably in places where many people gather: in the centers of large cities or at mass gatherings. He is in the midst of the crowd and makes his pictures quickly and often frontal. The people in his photographs have no opportunity to prepare for the shot.

BRUSSELS STREET PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2016 // REPORT

Paul Russell (UK) is a member of the In-Public photography collective. He sees photography as a study of human natural history and ecology. In his own words: “We enjoy traditional nature documentaries, and birdwatchers will often spend hours waiting for a small nondescript brown bird to leave its nest, for example, but we rarely stop to examine and consider our own everyday behaviour in such detail”. Russell’s work has been collected by the Museum of London, and he is one of 46 international photographers profiled in 2010’s Thames Hudson book, Street Photography Now. Satoru Toma (JP) is a Brussels based Japanese photographer. His work has been featured in many solo and collective exhibitions in Belgium, France, Lithuania, Russia and Germany. In his own words: “Akich in Japanese means empty field, vacant lot, vacant land. It is free space without aim. The marginal landscape or urban off scenes, rather than the main stage … This back of the scenes, by revealing details, refers to a political and social landscape. These landscapes are not imposed on the eyes but I ask questions there through my work and ‘d like to make discover it”. Philippe Herbet (BE) was born in Istanbul in 1964, he lives between Liège (BE), Minsk (Belarus) and elsewhere. Since 15 years he grows what he calls a Rhizome composed of photographs and texts in the former USSR. He is a photographer for the street, the wandering, the meeting of the marvelous emerging from everyday life. He exhibit his photos and artsist’s books in Belgium (Espace photographique Contretype, Museum of Photography in Charleroi), France (gallery Camera Obscura in Paris, ENS Lyon), Brazil (MUBE, Sao Paulo), he has published 8 monographs, including “Les Filles de Tourguéniev”, at Bessard editions in Paris.

Impact The BSPF 2016’s impact went beyond our expectations. Being the first time that street photography festival of this kind was organized in Europe, we received an overwhelming quantity of high quality street photographs from Brussels and around the world; we received a great amount of visitors from Brussels and abroad; we counted with the presence of first class photographers and with the kind support of institutions, companies, organizations and the media; and we received a warm an wide approval of the public. For this and more we’re very grateful.

• The visual database generated from the BSPF project is valuable. It reflects the everyday life of Brussels for the locals and it portraits the city to the international audience of the festival. The value of these images lay on the fact of providing a contemporary and critical point of view about Brussels society and its urban environment. Therefore, some of the images have been used by Belgian academics and professionals to illustrate some of their articles about the events taken place in Brussels nowadays. • The realization of an exhibition framed within the BSP Festival allowed the interaction between Street Photography amateurs and professionals. In this sense, the exhibition facilitated a meeting point for both groups during the days of the festival. • The exhibition was accessible for all type of public in spite of their interest in photography, their origin or their physical condition. The location of the exhibition within a public passage enlarged the project scope to other types of audience. This facilitated a more diverse and enriching discussion about the Street Photography and about the artistic, technical and documentary photographic discipline in general. • Concerned about waste/ The exhibition was built mainly with recycled materials. • Diverse cultural and educational program during the days of the festival fostered multiple ways of participation of the audience besides the competition itself. • Credible and effective project/ Partnering with initiatives like Creative District and VDH. Collaborating with Erasmushogeschool and Bellevue Museum. The support of relevant local institutions, organizations and media (Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles; Atelier Bouwmeester, BRUZZ; Attaché de la Culture de Bruxelles; etc). • Connected with city life/ Promoting street life and local initiatives like the Brussels Car free Sunday (same with Nuit Blanche 2017). • A reliable audience/ The participants of BSPF 2016 asked by different means (personally or via email) for a next festival in 2017.

Aims for BSFP 2017 The BSPF publication: A physical evidence of the legacy of the BSPF. With every edition of the festival, a large amount of photographic material is submitted, spaces in the city are activated, new ideas and initiatives form and constructive critiques and interventions are received making the festival grow in every sense. These resources are invaluable and extremely useful as they allow us to have a deeper understanding of society and life in the streets, working as a powerful urban research tool. Taking into consideration the photographs received, the analysis and opinions of the people involved and the general feedback and impressions, we can create a unique material with incredible photographs and articles related to the BSPF. The publication would serve to transmit this research and understanding to a wider audience with every edition, making it a unique and recurrent project that lives on its own which needs the festival in order to subsist. Photography workshops for children: Social understanding through visual interpretations. A photography workshop for children in which for an established period of time children learn different aspects about photography as a medium of visual expression. The idea then, is to teach children how to use a camera and how to develop a photographic project about their social reality using their creativity and photographic knowledge. This workshop also intends to help children in their social and psychological process during the development of their visual project, working as a guidance and sociological support. The workshop concludes with an exhibition on a public space of the different visual projects created in order to diffuse and promote them, all of this while activating the selected public space. Eventually, the visual stories can be also displayed during the next edition of the BSPF for a larger exposure and awareness. Movable exhibitions: The BSPF exhibition stays alive The BSPF finalists exhibition is an invaluable physical content which promotes the artistic work of many photographers from different parts of the world. This material can be resourceful for the development of new exhibitions and collaborations presenting the work displayed during the festival. This translates to giving the photographers a larger exposure, visitors a possibility to still visit the exhibition and partners the possibility to further collaborate.

Future There are many different ways in which the BSPF can be improved. There are no limitations and the possibilities are overwhelming. However, there are some aspects which we are constantly targeting in order to improve the overall image and impact of the BSPF with every edition to the general audience and to the parties involved. BSPF Goals • • •

• • •

The exhibitions can be organized fully or partially with new or established partners for a reasonable period of time. Having a yearly edition with different photos, the possibilities are endless for every party involved.

Activating public spaces: Keeping the city alive The BSPF highlights life in the street through the means of visual stories, which by being produced and developed into a physical content, can be used to activate different public spaces that have been neglected or that simply need an extra intervention which could highlight it. This concept is extended to other means and not only photographs, as there is a wide range of possibilities that could be explored in order to activate a public space.

The activation of public spaces is highly related to the other alternative projects which we could develop, as they all have a potential to do so. The aim is to find creative initiatives which would allow us to improve the image and reception of a public space.

To make Brussels the capital of street photography. To highlight the richness of Brussels as a cultural hub. To deliver original contents mixing architecture, urbanism and photography under the same umbrella. To reach a wider international audience among our participants and visitors. To enrich the artistic value of street photography as a genre of photography. To promote the artists and creators who take part in the BSPF. To make the BSPF a recognized tradition and leave a legacy for generations to come. To guarantee a rich and high quality program to our audience. To become a reference for other festivals around the world. To curate in a unique way our content mixing experts from different fields in order to guarantee a richer experience. To carry out an extended urban research about the social human conditions. To activate and improve the image of public urban places.

Support the BSPF!

The audience of the BSPF 2016 was highly international, given the nature of the event and the reach it had before, during and after the festival itself (to know more about the actual number of visitors and virtual audience please check the audience section of this report)

Why to support the BSPF? Street photography’s popularity is constantly growing, gaining more enthusiasts and forming stronger communities around the world. For the production of the BSPF we are relying on the support of cultural associations, public and private institutions, artists and art collectives. With your support , you will help the Brussels Street Photography Festival in our mission to bring together the view of established and emerging street photographers by offering them and the street photography genre a larger exposure to the general public and engaging new enthusiasts. The BSPF is an event that aims to target thousands of people from around the world in a common theme which is street photography. Considering that street photography has no level of expertise, the audience to reach is literally huge, going from the amateurs to the very well experienced photographers. The three-day event will connect people from all over Europe and the world in Brussels. The event has a special focus on the image and identity of Brussels, therefore we strongly encourage companies, institutions and actors who beleive - as much as we do - that the beauty of Brussels deserves to be celebrated, to join us in this iniciative. The audience of the BSPF 2016 was highly international, given the nature of the event and the reach it had before, during and after the festival itself (to know more about the actual number of visitors and virtual audience please check the audience section of this report) We hope that our mission motivates every institution as much as it motivates us and we certainly look forward to hear from you !
