alabasas Park Estates resident Marnie Schneider says football and philanthropy are part of her DNA. Schneider’s grandfather, Leonard Tose, owned the Philadelphia Eagles from 1969-85 and helped establish the first Ronald McDonald House, on Oct. 15, 1974, in Philadelphia. So when the Philadelphia native relocated to Calabasas from Hollywood, it was only natural she raised her hand to help out the Calabasas High School football team to continue his legacy.

Calabasas resident Julie DuFine, an accomplished writer/producer, and Jasmine Erving, daughter of the Philadelphia 76er and Hall of Famer Julius “Dr. J” Erving, she collects balls for underserved youth. “I collect footballs, baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls, kickballs, golf balls, NERF balls. We now have the LAPD’s Police Athletic League on board as a partner and distribution partner. We also have our ‘Ball of Famers,’ former professional athletes on our team to help spread the word about our mission. … We’re about to team up with a gigantic sporting goods company! Very exciting!”

“Being involved in youth athletics is a huge passion of mine,” shares the current V.P. of the Board of Directors for Calabasas High School’s football program. “I’m proud to be associated with the team behind the Coyotes.” She says she is “working hard with her relationships with many retired NFL players to bring the football team a championship. “I want to see the community come out and support the team!”

Professionally, Schneider and DuFine are the co-creators of Ladies, Grab Your Balls! a class and blog that encourages women to speak the language of sports. To contact Ladies, Grab Your Balls! For your next corporate retreat or a game day experience with the Football Filly, contact Nick Spike at Thuzio.com or LadiesGrabYourBalls.com.

Schneider with her mother, Susan Tose Spencer, are coordinating a special Coyote Football weekend Aug. 29 when the team will host Rancho High from North Las Vegas. “Those kids are very underserved, and it’s the first time for many of them to be out of Las Vegas,” she says. “We are planning a fun Saturday for all of them. It’s also the first game for Casey Clausen, the new head football coach. I’m very excited!”

Marnie is following in her late grandfather’s footsteps, teaching her three children the value of helping others and continuing his legacy at the Ronald McDonald House, where she sits on the Board of Directors. Marnie spends quite a bit of time at the Long Beach House and has recently participated in the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House’s Walk for Kids.

Schneider shares her infectious enthusiasm with Calabasas Style for yet another nonprofit she has founded, Grab a Ball and Play. With fellow

shoes to give to those who need athletic shoes. “We all know that playing sports and exercise are keys to a healthy mind, body and spirit,” she says. “With proper shoes, you can perform better. I’m working on trying to get a big sports-show sponsor.” Marnie and kids extend their commitment to helping the community by their choice of pets. The family’s rescue dogs have taken well to Calabasas, and Welsh pony Billy aka Kidding Around also is part of the family. The kids share the family sporting tradition. Jonathan, who attends Oaks Christian, loves to play basketball and football. Goldie is a competitive equestrian, spending afternoons caring for her pony at Calabasas’s Far West Farms. Leo, who enjoys football and golf, is a student at Bay Laurel Elementary. Marnie has called Calabasas home for four years. Marnie notes, “When I decided to leave Hollywood, Calabasas came up consistently. People raved about the excellent schools, the easy access to the ocean, and the great community feel -- and they were right! I’m a simple country girl, and I have all the conveniences of the city. You can’t beat the beautiful sunsets and summer nights in the 91302! We have made lifelong friendships here!” “I’m always with my kids, so whatever they want to do, throw balls and play catch in the backyard, cook, draw, or play games, we do it. I don’t want to miss a single second of their childhoods, and I want to make it the best for them and the most memorable fun!” A favorite dining spot is Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill. “We also keep Starbucks in The Commons in the black!” Marnie says with a laugh. “I have carved out a great life for us here in Calabasas and we do it in style. Is there any other way?” n For More Information: Grab a Ball and Play!!! http://ladiesgrabyourballs.com/ 2014/02/10/experienced-balls-needed-2 Long Beach Ronald McDonald House http://www.longbeachrmh.org Ronald McDonald House History: http://www.rmhc.org/our-history If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

Centre Salon

Discover Your Natural Beauty at the Aveda World Class By Elena Richards Photography by Marvin Steindler

T

he Centre Salon at The Common of Calabasas is the area’s only Aveda lifestyle salon, where the art and science of pure flower and plant essences are at the core of everything this full-service salon offers. Since opening in 2005, its mission has been to provide first-class service to its guests through its 100-percent dedication to Aveda’s hair, skin and spa products.

The Aveda experience hits you the moment you walk through the doors. Instead of being assaulted by the typical smells of harsh ammonias, dyes and chemical vapors, your senses are delighted by the fresh scents of lavender, jasmine and an array of organic extracts that define the Aveda brand. During your visit, you also experience an array of Aveda rituals designed to relax and transport you, such as enjoying a cup of Aveda Comforting Tea or relaxing with a complimentary and stress-relieving scalp, neck, shoulder or hand massage. What also makes the salon different from the norm is that all of the professional stylists and colorists have been trained and certified at the one of the 63 Aveda institutes throughout the world. Unlike most “beauty schools,” the Aveda Institute is an internationally renowned, cutting-edge and ecofriendly institution dedicated to shaping the future of beauty and wellness. The Centre Salon team is led by Bryan Bayer, a 20-year Aveda artistic creative director, and Operations Manager Sandra Zaki Tachejian. Bayer’s vision was to create a highprofile salon in the heart of Calabasas; and while they have many celebrity clients, the salon has none of “attitude” found at Beverly Hills salons. Bryan and his team have a genuine passion for hair, and all of the Centre Salon professionals are continually educated on the latest trends, techniques and styles inspired by the fashion runways

from around the world. The spa professionals also undergo regular training to stay informed of latest advancements in body and skin care so they can practice healing, rejuvenating and refreshing the mind, body and spirit. All products, including Aveda’s proprietary hair colors, are full of the life force of plants and contain pure essential oils. The Avedaingredient philosophy is that what you put on your body should be as healthy and natural as what you put in your body, so all products contain only naturally derived ingredients that are professionally developed, clinically tested and respectful of the earth. Unlike most hair colors that can do more damage than good, Aveda’s Full Spectrum™ Hair Color is 99-percent naturally derived from a signature blend of sunflower, castor and jojoba oils, infusing the hair with amazing shine and essentially damage-free results. The fade-resistant color is also created with an environmental and social conscience, so you can feel good about using plant power instead of petrochemicals. Customers never have to worry about picking the wrong shade, tone or color. Each colorist has been trained to select the color, tints and highlight shades designed to enhance your natural skin tone and eye color. The end result is a color that is uniquely right for you that enhances your natural beauty. The colorists and stylists have also been trained to professionally evaluate you hair’s condition before any product is selected or applied, ensuring your hair remains strong, healthy and vibrant. Customers who have damaged or over-processed hair will be excited to know that Centre Salon provides a wide

array of products to restore healthy hair. Joining the full line of hair-care products is a fabulous selection of skin-care products and makeup. Aveda lost a true icon in February when founder Horst M. Rechelbacher passed away from pancreatic cancer. Bryan, who received his training at the Aveda headquarters in the Minneapolis suburb of Blaine, remembers him well. “Horst was passionate about everything that went on at Aveda, and everyone who received Aveda training was inspired by his passion. He was a genuine innovator and an outspoken environmentalist. He and will always be remembered as the first pioneer of the sustainable beauty industry. Fortunately, his legacy lives on here in the heart of Calabasas at the Aveda Centre Salon. Discover a whole new concept in hair and skin services located in your own back yard at the Aveda Centre Salon, connecting beauty, environment and well-being. n 4732 Commons Way Calabasas, CA 91302 (818) 224-3442 centresalon.com

MEDITERRANEO Epicurean Getaway in the Heart of Westlake Village

By Beth Cone Kramer Photographed by Marvin Steindler

A

European-style getaway doesn’t have to involve passports and airports. In Westlake Village, we’re fortunate to have Mediterraneo, located between a private lake and authentic working vineyard, where a meal seems like a Mediterranean vacation.

Mediterraneo serves an inspired menu of fresh seasonal cuisine that showcases the finest of local produce in a stylish European-style bistro. Classic and contemporary favorites fuse sunny Mediterranean and Californian cuisines. The Westlake Inn’s signature restaurant has been serving residents and food connoisseurs for seven years. Guests enter the restaurant through a stone entry with iron lanterns. For a truly special experience, dine on the outdoor terrace overlooking the private lake. The terrace fireplace perfectly takes the chill out of Southern California evenings.

22

Calabasas Style

Breakfast and lunch guests find the terrace seating a tranquil setting. Inside, the restaurant’s sophisticated dining room features an exhibition kitchen, intimate bar seating, clusters of tables and two private dining spaces. Like its name suggests, Mediterraneo serves Mediterranean-inspired fare. The restaurant’s general concept is to offer healthy choices, staying clear of short-lived food trends. The Mediterranean diet is considered one of the healthiest in the world. The Westlake Village bistro blends the health-promoting Mediterranean cuisine in a vibrant New York environment to make the dining experience unique, exciting and fun. Executive Chef Lisa Biondi heads a talented culinary team that keeps the menu fresh and exciting – a farm-to-table experience. The breakfast menu includes scrambles and omelets, classic and light options as well as Mediterranean twists on favorites citrus

Dining In Style waffles with fresh strawberries and white chocolate mousse or lemon mascarpone crepes. Brunch choices include frittatas, sandwiches, pizzas and burgers. The lunch and dinner menus include a variety of salad choices. Two favorites are the whole-leaf Caesar and a particularly refreshing peach and burrata salad with heirloom tomatoes and arugula tossed in champagne vinaigrette. During the summer months, enjoy dining alfresco, sharing small plates such as the fireroasted artichoke served with a lemon aioli and charred lemon, the mozzarella fatto in casa, house-made mozzarella with sliced vineripened tomato, basil and grilled ciabatta; and the plancha shrimp Romesco, grilled butterflied shrimp served with Calabrian chili and garlic in a Romesco sauce. The restaurant’s selective wine list is world-class and includes red and white vintages as well as sparkling wine. The reserve wines are priced to sell, with wines from Plumpjack or Silver Oak priced below the competition.

Some cocktail favorites include the refreshing Basil & Grape: Akvinta organic vodka, seedless green grapes, fresh basil, fresh lemon sour and sparkling water; the Strawberry Cooler, with Belvedere citrus vodka, Cointreau triple sec, fresh lime sour and muddled strawberries; and the Cranberry Paloma with Don Benito Reposado tequila, Cointreau, fresh grapefruit juice, cranberry puree, fresh lime juice, agave syrup and sparkling water. The menu includes salads, pasta dishes and entrées that showcase the restaurant’s fresh produce, seafood and meat. The Bistro Salad features grilled asparagus with a frisee salad tossed in mustard dressing topped with pancetta, a seven-minute egg and crispy breadcrumbs. Mediterranean-inspired entrees include the Lamb Spiedini: spiced ground lamb and pork skewers, flame-grilled with cucumber-tomato salad tossed in a lemonsumac dressing, served with house-made pita and labneh; and a delicious grilled swordfish with cipollini onions, pee-wee potatoes, heirloom carrots, charred green garlic and rapini pesto. A favorite is the brick chicken, a half free-range all natural semi-boned chicken

served with an asparagus and wild mushroom farro risotto and charred lemon. Mediterraneo serves a variety of classic and unique desserts. We love the butterscotch pudding with whipped cream, caramel sauce and sea salt roasted peanuts; and Florentine tart, white chocolate-laced Chantilly cream served in a caramelized almond bowl, topped with fresh berries. The restaurant’s unusual cheese plate features d’Ambert, d’Affinois and Manchego, served with pecans, crostini and golden raisins in orange blossom honey. The bistro’s Half Off Happy Hour specials are offered Monday through Thursday from 4-7 pm and Fridays from 4-6:30 pm. Appetizers include Arancini, fire roasted artichoke, Lamb Spiedini, chicken Caesar, and wood-fired pizzas. The restaurant offers special prices on wine, draft beer and cocktails. Mediterraneo is an OpenTable Diners’ Choice winner for Best Outdoor Dining. n Mediterraneo 32037 Agoura Rd. 818.889.9105 med-rest.com

Summer Sun Protection

Selfie

...and a different kind of

By Anna D. Guanche, MD

Summer is here and so are the sunburned. “Sorry Dr. G, I thought about cancelling my appointment. I knew you’d be upset about my sunburn.” I am upset. “Did you know that five blistering sunburns can double your lifetime risk of melanoma?” Every hour of every day, someone dies from melanoma. Healthy skin depends on you protecting yourself from the sun and detecting possible signs of skin cancer early. Ultraviolet (UV) rays, from the sun and other sources such as tanning beds, are the primary cause of skin cancer. Too much exposure can also cause sunburn, eye damage and premature wrinkling. But you can lower your risk by shielding your skin with clothing, using broadspectrum sunscreen of sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher, and staying in the shade.

Take these steps to stay sun-safe: Cover up: When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UV light. In other words, putting sunscreen on but “laying out” to get a tan is not sun protection. Seek shade: Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps: Both can cause serious long-term skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.

62

Choosing the right sunscreen

While you should use sunscreen every day, it’s even more important during summer when the days are longer, the sun is stronger, and it’s easier to spend more time outdoors. When choosing sunscreen, be sure to read the label before you buy. United States FDA regulations that went into effect in 2012 require the labels to follow certain guidelines. Our guide can help you understand the terminology. Choose a sunscreen with “broad spectrum” protection. Sunscreens with this label protect against both UVA and UVB rays. All sunscreen products protect against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn. But UVA rays also contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. Make sure your sunscreen is sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher. The SPF number is the level of protection the sunscreen provides against UVB rays. Higher SPF numbers do mean more protection, but the higher you go, the smaller the difference becomes. SPF 15 sunscreens filter out about 93 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 30 sunscreens filter out about 97 percent, SPF 50 sunscreens about 98 percent, and SPF 100 about 99 percent. No sunscreen protects you completely. For anti-aging, the higher the SPF, the better. “Water resistant” does not mean “waterproof.” No sunscreens are waterproof or “sweatproof,” and manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim that they are. If a product’s front label makes claims of being water resistant, it must specify whether it lasts for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating. For best results, reapply sunscreen at least every two hours and even more often if you are swimming or sweating. Sunscreen usually rubs off when you towel yourself dry, so you will need to put on more.

The American Cancer Society has information on how to protect your skin at cancer. org/sunsafety, as well as a description of many skin cancer prevention activities.

Body self-examination Body self-exams (BSE) are key in finding any new or changing growths that might be cancerous or pre-cancerous. You know your body better than anyone. Skin cancers found and removed early are almost always curable. Body self-exams should be done monthly. Instructions for BSE can be found atskincancer.org/skin-cancer-information/early-detection/step-by-step-self-examination.

Body Self-Exam Instructions: What you’ll need: a bright light, a full-length mirror, a hand mirror, two chairs or stools, a blow dryer, body maps and a pencil. 1. Examine your face, especially the nose, lips, mouth and ears - front and back. Use one or both mirrors to get a clear view. 2. Thoroughly inspect your scalp using a blow dryer and mirror to expose each section to view. Get a friend or family member to help if you can. 3. Check your hands carefully: palms and backs, between the fingers and under the fingernails. Continue up the wrists to examine both front and back of your forearms. 4. Standing in front of the full-length mirror, begin at the elbows and scan all sides of your upper arms. Don’t forget the underarms.

5. Focus on the neck, chest and torso. Women should lift breasts and view the underside. 6. With your back to the full-length mirror, use the hand mirror to inspect the back of your neck, shoulders, upper back and any part of the back of your upper arms you could not view in step 4. 7. Still using both mirrors, scan your lower back, buttocks and backs of both legs. 8. Sit down and prop each leg in turn on the other stool or chair. Use the hand mirror to examine the genitals. Check front and sides of legs from thigh to shin, ankles, tops of feet, between toes and under toenails. Examine soles of feet and heels. California sunshine is a beautiful thing but should be “used with caution.” The reflections from sand and sea compound UV effects. I advise sunscreen, reapplied every two hours, annual body checks by the dermatologist and monthly body self-exams. If a mole looks suspicious at all, store a selfie of it in your phone. Then add a reminder in your calendar to check the mole for changes. Once a year, have an expert check you over to make sure you haven’t missed something. Often, the growths patients are concerned about are not the same ones we dermatologists are concerned about. So wear your sunscreen this summer and get ready to pose for some mole selfies! n

ever met.” Golden Spoon’s yogurt is a natural source of protein and calcium, with probiotics, live and active yogurt cultures to support a healthy digestive system and immunity.

What makes Golden Spoon different from most of its competitors? Adam Smith, who has owned the Calabasas location since 2011, shares, “The main difference is that we are a full-service frozen yogurt store, which means only our clean, presentable, and wellmaintained staff has access to create your Golden Spoon masterpiece. We only use the best products to create our yogurts. For example, our chocolate flavors are enhanced by real Ghirardelli cocoa. You won’t find icy or watered-down product here at Golden Spoon, only the best tasting, best textured, best quality frozen yogurt your mouth has

Southern California frozen yogurt lovers have been enjoying Golden Spoon since the early 1980s when the chain’s founder, Jeff Barnes, sought to create a more appealing and healthier frozen dessert than anything on the market. As the first wave of frozen yogurt mania tapered off, Barnes dedicated himself to creating “the ice cream lover’s frozen yogurt.” By 1986, the flavor list had included classics such as old-fashioned vanilla, Just Chocolate, peanut butter, and fresh strawberry. By 2008, the rotating flavor roster had included 80 custom flavors, featuring confectionaryinspired favorites such as cake batter and

cookie dough, a variety of fruit flavors including yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit, and seasonal favorites s’mores and gingerbread. Golden Spoon has also become a fixture in the Calabasas community, supporting schools and non-profits with fundraisers and Adam’s friendly hands-on approach. If you haven’t had the chance to meet Adam, he invites you to swing by Golden Spoon for a creamy yogurt and say hello.

T

he advent of laser, ultrasound and thermal radio frequency technology is playing a huge role in helping men and women reshape their bodies and reverse aging signs. The Vitality Institute of Agoura provides the highest technology in these three areas and provides the expertise of Dr. Michael Sarti, a board-certified physician specializing in emergency and aesthetic medicine and laser skin treatments. Before opening the institute, Dr. Sarti was medical director at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. After 28 years, in 2012, he decided it was time to cultivate his aesthetic-medicine career and opened the Vitality Institute – his dream business – in which he can provide patient care in a serene and nurturing environment by interacting with each patient to ensure happiness.

One of the most exciting procedures that the institute offers is Liposonix, a treatment that uses ultrasound technology to permanently destroy unwanted abdominal fat. Backed by more than 10 years of research, the Liposonix treatment targets the stubborn fats around the waistline and reduces the “love handles” or “muffin top” that are often resistant to diet and exercise. The skin is not harmed because the ultrasound affects only the fat tissue beneath the skin, which is permanently destroyed within 8-12 weeks. The body naturally removes the treated fat, leaving patients with a thinner, more contoured waistline. The treatment is completed in just one office visit and lasts about one hour. The average person can expect to lose one clothing size and an average of one inch off the waistline. This non-surgical treatment has no downtime or aftercare, so patients can resume their active lifestyles right away. The Vitality Institute is also the only center in the area offering Exilis Elite, the latest skin-tightening and wrinkle-reduction procedure for patients who show signs of aging. The Exilis Elite procedure uses the latest advances in radio-frequency aesthetic treatment. Thermal heating applied to the skin, combined with the high frequency and radio waves, provides stimulation similar to collagen in the skin. Exilis Elite is typically performed on the face and neck, where aging signs are most visible; however, patients are seeing excellent results when used to tighten skin and reduce wrinkles on the knees, arms, back of the legs and stomach. For some patients, Dr. Sarti will combine Liposonix with Exilis Elite to reduce fat and tighten the skin on the knees, arms and abdomen to achieve the best result. The Vitality experts recommend four Exilis Elite sessions 7-14 days apart, with a single touch-up session in 18 months. Patients have seen results last up to two years, which provides a great option for those who desire aesthetic improvement without the cost and recovery time of plastic surgery. Since patient comfort and a speedy recovery are top priorities, Dr. Sarti offers patients nitrous oxide for virtually pain-free treatments during all office procedures. The Vitality Institute also offers complimentary consultations on both procedures. n

California’s Favorite Weekly Car Show

World Famous Supercar Sunday

By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Greg Grudt & Duane Steiner

S

upercar Sunday continues to thrill auto enthusiasts from all over the world. One of the biggest attractions of this weekly car show at the Woodland Hills Westfield Promenade is that it is a show that you can see every single car you have ever wanted to see.

This past month, visitors from Spain, Japan, France and Brazil made the trek to what many call the mecca of motorsports in Southern California. Blown away by the diversity that Supercar Sunday offers, they simply could not believe that such a vast array of vehicles were on display and were driven in by the owners. Auto enthusiasts will travel far and wide to follow their passion. The car community is a family in which gasoline pours through its veins. Supercar Sunday has become an auto event in which it is common to see cars valued in the millions of dollars parked right next to hot rods, muscle cars, project cars and the latest and greatest from auto manufacturers. Celebrity spottings this past month included regulars like Bruce Jenner and Jeff Dunham; and on Porsche Marque Day, Jerry Seinfeld stopped by in a vintage speedster. n

Since our mobile devices have become such an integral part of our lives, how about some apps to make your summer move quicker? You may not want your summer to breeze by (unless of course, you eagerly await your freedom that comes when the kids go back to school).

shopping and nature. Add these items to your itinerary and hover over the map; from there, you will be directed to that travel site’s webpage.

Still, check out Hipmunk, which compares the prices of flights and hotels. The app contains a useful add-on called Tonight Deals. This will help you with last-minute hotel rooms at up to 60 percent off. Are you hungry? Included in Hipmunk is a nifty feature called Heatmap, which show you nearby shopping and dining options.

One of the more popular services and apps is the explosion of Uber. This is the easiest and quickest way to travel within a city without trying to find a cab. The app will show you how close available cars are to your current location and how much each costs. You can opt for an economical Uber X or get a black car or black SUV. You can even pay via PayPal or credit card.

However, the best app for restaurant searches is Open Table. It will help you find restaurants in most any area and make reservations for you. When you check in at the restaurant, you will receive points that eventually lead to gift certificates. It also can forward that reservation to your friends. It shows reviews, photos and menu listings. If your summer plans include a trip to the airport, try GateGuru. This app provides maps, weather, TSA wait estimates and flight alerts. It also helps you get the best rental cars and keeps track of your travel stats. The app includes an Amenity List that contains airport information such as eateries, shops and services.

Financial Brief

Predicting the FUTURE By Mark Wendell

T

o a large degree, Wall Street markets move on the daily predictions of “experts,” the talking heads on TV, in newspapers and in blogs who make magical prognostications based on patterns they claim to perceive in the ever-shifting kaleidoscope of global economic activity. Institutions, money managers and economists -- some honorable, some opportunistic – originate these economic statistics. The problem is that the media in general often seem to interpret current events and forecasts through their own overly dramatic, biased and self-serving lenses rather than merely observing and reporting information. Intense competition and “never waste

94

Calabasas Style

a crisis” reporting among traditional and electronic media outlets over recent years has tended to inflate the positive and negative hype level of reporting. Too often, the pressure to grab the public’s attention outweighs dispassionate analysis. Objectivity-challenged views of “experts” who are strategically placed to sound off about the subject at hand. This conveniently validates the views of the media source, which influences Wall Street financial markets, and generates more drama in a seemingly endless feedback loop of news-generating-news-generating-market movements that generates even more news. This unfortunate trend sometimes stampedes investors into making decisions based on “the sky is falling!” media-exaggerated alarms. Investors would be wise to wonder whether

the media’s reporting brings about selffulfilling prophesies of movements in financial markets (i.e., S&P 500) and economic metrics (i.e., employment reports). It is easy to view the glass as half empty, particularly when financial markets seem to be stuck in a go-nowhere up-and-down cycle in our impatient-and-short-termthinking minds. However, when it comes to investing, it is important to maintain a long-term perspective. Historically, market corrections must be judged not by dramatic depressing headlines but by remembering that the loss of market value is eventually followed by market surges. Recent history shows if we view the market on a one-, fiveand 10-year point-to-point basis, the (S&P 500) market is up 100% of the time. However, if we view it from a day-to-day perspective

Financial Brief where market volatility gives us emotional whiplash, we can easily get sucked into the global microscopic media analysis bombarding us from every direction that skews and confuses reality. Thus, necessary attention-grabbing headlines notwithstanding, we must view the media hype broadly in the context of what trends have factually occurred over recent years. A good example is the ubiquitous gloomy reporting of the past three years about European financial conditions and U.S. unemployment numbers, which were being dramatically framed as potentially catastrophic, portending recessions, inflation, stagnation and market crashes. It’s no wonder consumer confidence has been shaken, and investors continue to feel especially risk-averse. Although the pendulum always swings the other way at some point, generating another cycle of “irrational exuberance” (quoting former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan), as long as bad news sells more advertising and attracts higher ratings than good news, headlines and “experts” are likely to continue to shout, “Crisis? Recession? Bubble? Inflation? Deflation? Correction?” leaving fear and uncertainty in investors’ minds. Fortunately, credible analysis of economic data is available from authoritative non-governmental sources — information that does, in fact, genuinely affect economic policy-making and, therefore, legitimately also affects global markets. One such respected authority is The Conference Board, a nonadvocacy, not-for-profit organization that defines itself as “a global, independent business membership and research association working in the public interest to provide the world’s leading organizations with the practical knowledge they need to improve their performance and better serve society.” Its Leading Economic Index® (LEI) is an example of the kind of information researchers rely on — a concise algorithm designed to crystallize mountains of data on past and present economic factors, which can, within limits, foretell future economic conditions. The LEI is a composite of a number of different indicators that, because they cover so many different economic factors, serve better as a credible predictor when integrated as a group rather than as isolated data points. While this methodology has predictive value, it has been criticized for having predicted nine of the last six recessions! The Conference Board counters this criticism by pointing to the lead times with which the LEI has correctly predicted economic downturns. Since economics, as a social science, deals with unpredictable

human behavior, it may be self-limiting — predictions about market movements affect market movements in a feedback loop. This is especially true when political ideology, rather than empirical evidence, guides monetary (Federal Reserve) and fiscal (Congress) policies. Even a factual 10-component, non-partisan LEI index cannot be expected to be a perfect soothsayer when the underlying variables are human hopes and fears driven by the media. So what does the monthly LEI report tell us about our economic future, as of May 22, 2014? www.conference-board.org “The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.S. increased 0.4 percent in April to 101.4 (2004 = 100), following a 1-percent increase in March, and a 0.5-percent increase in February. “The LEI rose for the third consecutive month, driven largely by improving housing and financial market conditions,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, a Conference Board economist. “This latest report suggests the economy will continue to expand, and may even pick up steam through the second half of the year.” “Despite a brutal winter, which brought the economy to a halt, the overall trend in the leading economic index has remained positive,” said Ken Goldstein, another Conference Board economist. “If consumers continue to spend, and businesses pick up the pace of investment, the industrial core of the economy will benefit and GDP growth could move closer towards the 3-percent range.” n
