I

love this time of year. Everything is still green, yet it’s not too hot. We are motivated to plan for outside entertaining since the evening weather is wonderful! Many of us are busy with Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduation plans. All of us at Calabasas Style want to wish all the mothers and fathers out there a Happy Mother’s and Father’s Day, and we hope your families spoil you! If you have not shopped yet for your mother or father, take a look at our Gift Guide suggestions from many of your local favorite stores. This has been an interesting issue to put together, starting with the Raznicks and their rare collection of vintage penny arcades. Mastros brings VIP excellence to our local dining scene, and the brand new Erewhon organic grocery store gives us a great new resource for all our organic produce, seasonal take-out and health-promoting items. Stop by for lunch or a snack at the café. University Village shows us a whole new look in senior living. BSH Landscape & Hardscape Design can make all our visionary designs into a reality at our homes. We thank those who give back, including the Centre Salon at The Commons at Calabasas, which hosted a Cut-a-Thon to benefit the Surfrider Foundation and the Friends of the Disney Family Cancer Center, who in recognition of Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month, hosted a fundraising event at Casa Del Cielo, the Calabasas home of Lynette and Mark Sikand. We feature summer fashion styles shared by Blush, Besitos, Dungarees, Optix and M. Frederic. Last but not least, we have a new writer, Dustin Troyan, who is our ongoing automotive consultant. Enjoy the pleasant days of late spring, filled with celebrations!

Rob and Linda Raznick Bring

“Turn ofTheCentury” By Beth Cone Kramer Photographed By Marvin Steindler

T

hat’s turn of the 19th and 20th centuries! Enter the Raznick’s property and you come upon a veritable one-of-a-kind museum of late 1800s and early 1900s coin-operated antiques, along with a bit of the Old West and early America.

Although they left a home with an incredible view in Calabasas to move to Hidden Hills, Rob promised Linda, “I’ll build you a view.” And he did. The couple’s home, located at the corner of Round Meadow and Hoback Glen roads, features a glorious view of the home’s rockfall, its barn and its dozens of roses from all the windows. The Victorian ranchthemed home, which took 16 months to build, features a wraparound porch (mimicking their favorite homes at their “go-to” getaway in Kennebunkport, Maine), an antique penny arcade and a barn for the couple’s three registered Tennessee walking horses, Zeus, Liberty and Montana. Horseback riding is one of the Raznicks’ favorite pastimes, especially riding in Ahmanson Ranch and through Hidden Hills’ endless

trails. The Raznicks also share their home with three adored golden retrievers, Romeo, Teddy and Oliver. The Raznicks love the equestrian lifestyle. Linda notes, “Hidden Hills is an enviable blend of everything country and city life. We enter the gates and leave the city behind. We leave the Hidden Hills gates and 60 seconds later, we’re back in the city. Our neighbors are like our family, and there’s nowhere else that has the Hidden Hills sense of community.” In planning their home, the Raznicks sought out one of the original Hidden Hills architects, Oren Harris, whom they hired out of retirement. They built a separate structure, connected to the main living quarters by a breezeway, to house their antique American Penny Arcade collection, circa 1880s through 1919, one of the largest such collections known to exist in the world. Rob shares there are now fewer than four such collections of original vintage penny arcades in existence. The couple also collects

antique advertising and antique mechanical music machines. As far back as Rob can remember, he has loved coin-operated amusement machines. Rob and Linda began their collection during the early 1980s, starting with electro-mechanical games, but their passion quickly grew to turn-of-the-century mechanical games, which are extremely difficult to acquire. The collection now includes more than 100 antique floor model mechanical machines, many of which are one- and two-of-a-kind. Although the Raznicks do not consider themselves to be car collectors, they own several vintage cars they have always admired. Their very rare 1940 Packard Darrin Super 180 Victoria Convertible is documented as 42 of 44 ever made. The Raznicks completely restored the original vehicle, which won “Best in Class” at the prestigious 2013 Quail Show in Carmel Valley. Among their other vintage vehicles, Rob and Linda also own a fully restored 1948 Chrysler Town and Country “Woody” convertible, which they fondly call their “beach mobile.” The Raznicks are avid supporters of several animal-related charities, including many no-kill pet rescue and canine cancer research organizations, including Best Friends Animal Society, Pet Adoption Fund, spcaLA, the Morris Animal Foundation and North Shore Animal League America. The couple also supports nonprofits dedicated to improving the lives of disabled and medically-challenged children, including Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship, Make-a-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Children’s Hospital. Rob is president of Raznick and Sons, Inc., celebrating its 84th year in the real estate development business. Rob’s grandfather, Jake Raznick, founded the company in 1930. Rob, together with his father, Aaron, and his mother, Cherie, developed properties throughout Southern and Northern California, including award-winning single- and multifamily homes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Raznick and Sons was one of the largest homebuilders in Ventura County from the 1970s-early 1990s. The company’s prestigious projects include the Colony at Mandalay Beach, as well as retail shopping centers, office buildings, self-storage and apartments. The company currently is developing several projects. Linda, an attorney, is a co-founder, vice president, and editor in chief of The Rutter Group (TRG), now a division of Thomson Reuters. With partner Bill Rutter, Linda set out in 1979 to create trusted “how to” resources for practicing attorneys. The two assembled a team of topnotch lawyers and judges throughout the country to be lead authors on practice guides for the state of California and the federal bar. Today, among the company’s many dozens of publications, there are more than 30 TRG California and federal practice guides, with several new ones on the way. n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

CalabasasAreWomen True Friends of the DFCC

C

Photography by James Doss alabasas residents Lynette Sikand, Ellen Lynch, Teresa Uribe-McGilvray and Laura Pistotnik have friends and family who have struggled with cancer. Fortunately, they received amazing support and treatment at the Providence Saint Joseph Disney Family Cancer Center.

More than 100 local residents attended this event to raise donations and celebrate the cancer survivors who have received care through the world-renowned oncology specialists at the Disney Family Cancer Center. Rex Hoffman, M.D., director of radiation, and Daniel Copps, M.D., dental oncologist at the DFCC, spoke at the engagement.

As a way to give back and help other cancer patients, these four women formed a committee called the Friends of the Disney Family Cancer Center. In April, in recognition of Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month, they hosted a fundraising event at Casa Del Cielo, home of Lynette and Mark Sikand on Park Vicente in Calabasas. What makes this setting even more significant is that Maria and Ric Uribe, the original homeowners, were instrumental in the development of the Disney Family Cancer Center and hosted several fundraisers more than 37 years ago. Daughter Teresa Uribe-McGilvary and the Friends of the DFCC are proud to honor their legacy in her childhood home.

The Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph is the first and only state-of-the-art comprehensive cancer center in the San Fernando Valley. The four-story center offers patients the latest technology in chemotherapy and radiation oncology, as well as integrative medical services including acupuncture, massage, hypnotherapy, gynecologic counseling and hematology/oncology. In addition, the DFCC offers customized rehabilitation treatment for each patient that is specific to his/her functional needs and ongoing quality-of-life goals. n

elebrity stylist Raychel Harrison dreamed of implementing a salon culture based on teamwork and exceptional attention to detail for personalized hair care services. The stylist had impressed many celebrities when she apprenticed with industry icon Robert Cromeans at his Mandalay Bay salon in Las Vegas. Harrison toured the country as a platform artist with John Paul Mitchell Systems, showing stylists the latest trends in beauty. In 2012, Harrison brought her vision to Calabasas when she opened Salon Nuuvo. “It’s not just about the hair,” Harrison said, “it’s about the people. Salon Nuuvo is about the WHY. Everyone is in it together, from each stylist participating and graduating through our Advanced Training Program, to the seniors and masters on the floor. Everyone is family. Stylists do not have set workstations. Everyone lends equal support to each other and the ambiance creates a sophisticated experience at an affordable price. From its opening, Salon Nuuvo has aimed to create an unrivaled salon and spa experience from the moment clients walk through the door. Clients can surf the Internet or scroll through a tablet magazine at the complimentary iPad station, sipping on a complimentary cup of coffee, whole leaf tea or wine. Each client receives a comprehensive lifestyledriven consultation. Guests start earning “frequent dryer miles” as soon as their client profile is activated. MASTRO’S Brings VIP Excellence to Thousand Oaks

By Beth Cone Kramer Photographed by Marvin Steindler

alabasas Style readers don’t need to go over the hill for prime steaks, top-notch seafood and exemplary service. The Thousand Oaks location of Mastro’s Steakhouse offers a truly exceptional fine-dining experience with not only a world-class menu of prime steaks and fresh seafood but also handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list. Mastro’s chefs have created a menu using only the highest quality ingredients. Since the original Mastro’s Steakhouse opened its doors in Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1999, the restaurant has aimed to treat every guest like a VIP. The family-owned restaurant in north Scottsdale is the template for all subsequent restaurants. Mastro’s has grown to a collection of 11 sophisticated, classic steakhouses and Ocean Club seafood locations, recognized for world-class service, highly acclaimed cuisine and live entertainment in an elegant yet energetic ambiance.

26

Calabasas Style

The Mastro’s family of restaurants includes Mastro’s City Hall Steakhouse in Scottsdale; Mastro’s Ocean Club in Las Vegas, Scottsdale and Newport Beach with a fourth set to open in Malibu; and four additional Steakhouse locations in Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, Palm Desert and Chicago. While each restaurant features unique design elements, all aim to provide each guest with a truly memorable experience. Mastro’s Steakhouse is led by a team of highly motivated and detail-oriented professionals who strive for excellence in guest service, the finest quality food and distinct ambiance, setting Mastro’s apart from other restaurants. We love to unwind after a long day in the lounge at Mastro’s Thousand Oaks, enjoying a classic cocktail or glass of wine. Sports enthusiasts can check out the scores of their favorite game on the lounge’s flat-screens. Mastro’s fine-dining experience starts with a variety of delectable seafood appetizers. Our favorites include the Alaskan Red King Crab Claws, Seared Ahi, Sauteed Sea Scallops and Crab Cakes. The restaurant’s

Dining In Style sushi menu was developed exclusively for Mastro’s by Chef Angel Carbajal of Nick-San Cabo San Lucas with offerings like an Ahi Tuna Tostada with fresh avocado, spicy onion salsa and ponzu chili sauce. We love the Seared Albacore with Black Truffles prepared with seared albacore sashimistyle topped with ponzu, fresh shaved black truffles and fried crushed garlic chips; and the Clear Lobster Roll prepared with spiny lobster tempura, mango, avocado, spicy mayo, and masago (flying fish roe) rolled with fresh greens, served with Chef Angel’s signature lobster sauce and curry oil. Pair your appetizer or sushi selections with a handcrafted cocktail or selection from Mastro’s extensive list of wines and craft beers. The Mastro Classic Martini features Belvedere vodka with your choice of extra olives hand-stuffed with blue cheese, large caper berries or “dirty” with a splash of olive juice. If you prefer your cocktails on the spicier side, order a Dragon Fire with Milagro Silver tequila, Tuaca, Monin, Chipotle Pineapple and Chambord, served with a floating jalapeno garnish; or a Spicy Senorita with Patron Silver tequila, fresh lime, simple syrup, Cholula hot sauce, cucumber and served on the rocks with a salted rim.

The menu includes takes on traditional steakhouse salad offerings including Caesar and an Iceberg Wedge. Our favorite is the Mastro’s House Salad, a chopped salad with shrimp, red onion, tomato and blue cheese crumbles. Since this is a steakhouse, meat eaters can choose from a variety of cuts, including a Filet, a 12-ounce Bone-in Filet, a 16-ounce New York Pepper Steak, a 33-ounce “Chef’s Cut” Ribeye Chop and a 24-ounce Double Cut Porterhouse. Additional selections include a Double Cut Pork Chop, Veal Chop and Rack of Lamb. Mastro’s seafood selections include Seared Ahi, a Scottish Salmon Filet, Chilean Sea Bass, Alaskan King Crab Legs, Twin Lobster Tails and Live Maine Lobster. Any steakhouse worth its salt features an impressive selection of sides. Mastro’s list is more like an encyclopedia with choices like Lobster Mashed Potatoes, Gorgonzola Mac & Cheese, potatoes in just about every configuration, Colossal Onion Rings, and Alaskan King Crab Black Truffle Gnocchi. The vegetable options include the steakhouse classics Creamed Spinach and Creamed Corn as well as delicious Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Sautéed Sugar Snap Peas and Spinach.

If your party has left any room for dessert, don’t miss Mastro’s Signature Warm Butter Cake or a slice of Chocolate Sin Cake. The dessert menu is rounded out with choices such as Cheese Cake, Key Lime Pie, a Cherry Crisp, berries, a Chocolate Pudding Cake, and a unique Johnny Walker Flight Tray with Featured Dessert. Whether you’re planning a dinner party, corporate dinner, charity event or even an intimate private dinner for two – the kind that’s capped with a few carats in a glass of champagne – Mastro’s has private and semi-private rooms available for events. For a truly memorable event, the entire restaurant may be reserved. n Mastro’s Steakhouse 2087 East Thousand Oaks Bl. Glossy Locks

By Anna D. Guanche, MD

Calabasas Style

H

Hair is so fascinating. We as a nation spend billions on our hair, styling, coloring, highlighting, blowdrying, trimming and gelling it. It is something we use to express ourselves because it is a part of our body that is freely changeable. Who knew that stacks of dead protein secreted from specialized bulbs in the skin could be so important? It is not only part of our own identity, it is the way we identify others. What are the first three traits that come to mind when describing someone? Height, gender and hair: The tall brunette. The petite blonde. The balding gentleman…and so on. When hair is on our heads, it signifies style and beauty - it has sex appeal. The moment it is no longer attached to our heads, it is the most revolting thing imaginable! “Excuse me. There is a hair in my soup!” (It may have been your own.) Glossy thick hair is a sign of health and vibrancy. Thin, brittle, opaque hair is a sign of illness or senescence. As we know, older people generally have less hair, but also their hair texture is dry and frizzy. What are some things we can do to stack the odds in favor of glorious, vibrant, shiny hair?

Some interesting facts about hair are:

The potential length is inherited (like dog breeds). If left untrimmed, hair grows to a genetically determined length. Some hairs are growing, some are slow growing and some are in a “resting phase.” Hairs on different parts of your body grow at different rates. Imagine if your eyebrow hairs grew at the same rate as your scalp hair. What a sight! Male-pattern baldness is accompanied by a decrease in scalp hair but an increase in body hair.

Stress/Hormonal changes

Changes in hormone balance can increase facial and body hair while decreasing scalp hair. Prolonged stress also causes the body to release cortisol, a stress hormone that can mimic androgens such as testosterone. So relax! Breathe, do yoga, take 15 minutes a day for yourself and reflect on positive things.

rine damage and processing damage. Take it easy on your hair. If you swim regularly, coat your hair with Reflect H2O before getting in the pool. If you are in the sun a lot, there are hair sunscreen sprays such as Shiseido Refreshing Sun Protection that you can use. It takes one second to pull out one strand, and a year or two to grow it back fully. Scalp hair grows at a rate of about 1cm per month. When dying the hair, lightening it is much more damaging (opens cuticles to pull out pigment) than darkening. Troy Jensen, celebrity photographer of Jennifer Lopez, recommends Oribe Shine Light Reflecting Spray for anyone lusting after an instant shine. Daily hair care products can also help to condition and smooth the hair. I find that John Frieda Brilliant color-specific shampoo and conditioner work best for me.

Lab work

A few tests can be in ordered if a thinning problem is not going away after a few months. A look at the thyroid can tell us whether you are hyperor hypothyroid, both of which can lead to hair loss. Blood counts can reveal anemia, which also puts the body in power save mode. A general screen for autoimmune problems is also helpful. This list is by no means comprehensive.

Topical medications

Diet

Injectable medications

Because hair is actually composed of keratin protein, it is best to provide plenty of protein in the diet for hair to grow. If the body perceives a lack, it will shunt resources elsewhere because let’s face it: Hair is optional; your liver function is not. Avoid crash diets and eat plenty of protein.

Propecia is known to prevent progression of hair loss and to encourage a small amount of growth in men. There are occasional side effects because testosterone receptors are blocked. It needs to be continued indefinitely. Upon discontinuation of the drug, the hairline recedes to where it would have been if it had never been treated, however, it is arguably the most effective oral treatment for men.

Hair care and products Hair placement You control the amount of sun damage, chlo-

Vitamins

My favorite vitamins to support hair health are biotin, folic acid and glucosamine. I think a multivitamin with iron is great as well. Some people are sensitive to the iron (get constipated). In that case, once-weekly iron would be better than nothing. Viviscal is a supplement that has biotin and AminoMar, a shellfish extract that is possibly helpful in hair growth. Of course, you should run any new oral regimen by your doctor before starting.

Oral medications

Minoxidil, aka Rogaine, is the most popular over-the-counter topical that prevents progression of hair loss and encourages modest hair growth. Word of mouth from our patients tells us that eyelash growth factors such as Latisse can stimulate scalp-hair growth as well. Topical progesterone may encourage hair growth by modifying the hormonal profile in the scalp skin. The three actives can be compounded together with an anti-inflammatory to cover all the bases.

In some cases, after everything has been tried, the need or desire for hair placement arises. Nowadays, there are advanced techniques for restoring a full appearance to the hair that incorporate the natural hair and allow for swimming, showering, sports, etc. High-profile clients of mine enjoy these services from Thursday’s Salon in Calabasas. They report improved appearance and increased confidence. Hair 2 Wear is a line of hair extensions “for longer, fuller, more beautiful hair” that supermodel Christie Brinkley developed. She feels that hair extensions contribute a great deal to her everyouthful appearance. Hair is an important and special part of our persona. Shiny, thick hair is a desirable trait in both men and women. Now, as I attempt to finish this article on a flight home from Boston, I realize that none other than Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy!) is sitting in the row behind me. Who better to inspire an article about glossy locks than the recipient of InStyle’s Best Hair and People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive awards? With that said, hopefully some of the tips included in this piece are useful in achieving your own head full of healthy, glossy locks. n This is a general review—by no means comprehensive and does not substitute for individual medical advice. Dr. Guanche is not a consultant for, nor receives consulting fees or compensation from, any of the product or device companies mentioned in this article.

Certain injectable medications have been shown to stimulate hair growth. Low-dose antiinflammatory injections and progesterone injections have shown promise in encouraging hair follicles.

Must Haves for Summer By Fred Levine of M. Fredric The Jumpsuit As easy and effortless as the beloved maxi dress, a jumpsuit pairs up as an equal alternative. From your next beach getaway to a city soirée, billowy silks and structured tailored cuts transform from day to night with a simple pairing of heels and metallic accessories.

TART

The Pleated Skirt The soft flutter of a pleated skirt paired with something so basic as a plain white tee is an absolute must this season. Pastels, bold brights and even punchy prints laid low at your waist will set the romantic mood for any summertime occasion. The Shirt The classic button-down is no longer reserved solely for office wear. A crisp Oxford shirt or chiffon-collared blouse goes preppy chic this season when paired with your crisp trouser shorts and modern mules or with a high slit skirt and d’Orsay pumps. The Set Ditch your denim in favor of a chic matching set. Coordinating pieces are all the rage this season, and they work for almost any type of event. Wear a printed short suit to lunch with your gals, a matching skirt set in a bold color to the office, and even mix and match your brights and prints with a sheer blouse and a small stacked heel for everything in between. The White Jacket A boyfriend blazer, bomber jacket or sophisticated tuxedo jacket…there’s hardly an ensemble that can’t benefit from a white jacket. Regardless of the cut, be wary of the fit. Paired with cigarette pants, a flouncy sheer top or tossed over the shoulders of your flowy dress, a white jacket will polish up any look! The Palazzo Pant Transition from your skinny jeans to a more universally flattering wide-legged look with the reintroduced palazzo pant. This ’70s throwback style is super versatile from resort-wear to business-casual. The best way to keep the look styled and glamorous is to pair with heels to show the full effect of the palazzo. The Vibrant Scarf In lieu of a necklace, try a soft loop of colorful printed fabric draped effortless across your body. You can ‘neck-it’ by wrapping around your neck or letting both ends hang. Wrap it around your body as a shawl or sarong. Or tie it as a belt or headscarf for instant summer chicness. The Overall Reverting back to your youth and OshKosh B’gosh days, the overall is back in several different versions. The double-strapped classic is done in denim, leather, silks and some other nontraditional fabrics. The modernism of this nostalgic trend marks for an absolute must-have this season. The Beach Survival Kit Let’s simply run through a quick checklist here: Bathing suit trends to covet include everything from fringe, laser cuts and ruffles to sexy one-pieces, bustiers and details of crochet and macramé. A chunky sandal is approved, while flowy and ultra-sheer cover-ups are recommended. Sun protection is a must so shade your face with a good-sized hat and stare in to the sun with mirrored sunnies. Tote your oversized organic beach towel in a crochet and leather mixed beach bag! The Chunky Sandal As if a gift from the fashion gods, the chunky, blocked heel sandal will be your essential shoe this season. Time to take out the Birks, flat plats and low, blocked heels. Quality is Always In

Style

By Wayne Duling Photography by Marvin Steindler

B

uy quality and you’ll only cry once. It’s indeed ever so tempting to try and save money by settling for the cheap-product option, only to find that replacements and performance dissatisfaction have turned that decision into the more costly and much less satisfying choice.

This scenario seems to play out frequently with home furnishings, and at an increasing rate, these days. That’s because of the expansion of low-end furniture retailers and the concurrent contraction of higher-end establishments. This is a bit surprising when you consider how much time we actually spend in our homes. Counting sleep, it averages to more than 12 hours a day. Considering that furnishings – and I use this word to also include what covers our floors, walls and windows – can be viewed as art with function. Investing in the right quality home products that meets our needs for seating, sleeping and storing, can transform our living space into a recharging sanctuary. In the real world, most of us live with budgetary constraints, so upgrading to high quality throughout our homes may not be practical or even possible. The solution is to mix in some unique quality statement pieces with well-selected moderately priced items. In this way, the whole will rise to the level of the cream.

50

Calabasas Style

The long-term benefits of owning quality furniture obviously transcend the satisfaction and appreciation of its craftsmanship, like a finely made musical instrument that can be admired for its beauty but also produces wonderful sounds. A well-made piece of upholstery will provide luxurious and comfortable seating for many years after that bargain sofa has flattened and lost its fabric and color brilliance. The quality-made wood piece will actually improve its appearance with age and can remain in the family for years, if not generations. n

It’s important to buy what you love – but perhaps more important to love what you buy – for those furnishing items that will be in your home long-term. When selecting your home furnishings, remember that quality is always in style.

rganic grocery and café offering grocery staples, all organic produce, vegan and vegetarian products, health and beauty products.

Calabasas welcomes Erewhon, the Los Angeles natural foods store that has been catering to healthy lifestyle enthusiasts since 1968 when health food was far less mainstream. Like the Beverly Boulevard location, the Calabasas market features a tonic and juice bar, a café, prepared hot foods, rotisserie chicken, a salad bar, deli counter and specialty items for those following macrobiotic, raw and gluten-free diets. The Calabasas location also features an organic pizza bar, selling slices and pies. Erewhon features a 100% organic produce department and organic café. Like the Los Angeles store, the Calabasas location carries options for various dietary restrictions. Stop in after your Bikram yoga or Spin session for its 100% organic cold-pressed juices made fresh daily. Unique for the area, the Tonic & Juice Bar has natural, ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic ingredients. The first Erewhon opened in Boston in the late 1960s to serve those following a macrobiotic diet as well as to maintain the pasture-to-fork traditions that were beginning to erode. More than 40 years later, the market still strives to bring in the most wholesome products available. Erewhon works to create innovative grocery, health and beauty products with only the cleanest ingredients. Erewhon’s stated mission is to “make healthy, pure, nutrient-rich foods and products available to all and to inspire people to eat better, eat less, and live longer.” In an era when apples may come from across the world, Erewhon is committed to bringing locally sourced, organic

produce from farm to table and creating prepared dishes using the best ingredients possible. This means staying on the cutting edge by sourcing the latest innovations in high-quality, nutrient-rich and pure products. Erewhon’s Calabasas location promises to become a popular meeting place for an organic latte or lunch in the organic café, or a healthy hot dinner on the way home from work. Try one of the chia puddings or a vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. If you’re interested in replacing your household items with nontoxic alternatives or need advice on supplements, the staff at Erewhon is knowledgeable and helpful. An integral part of Erewhon’s mission is to protect the sources of pure food. To this end, Erewhon supports the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit dedicated to protect and build the food supply that is not genetically modified, to educate the public, and to verify whether foods are non-GMO. Erewhon supports additional local nonprofits, including Farm to School, the Institute for Responsible Technology and Netiya. Erewhon aims to be a destination for health enthusiasts from as far as the Valley and Malibu by selling only the purest, ethically and sustainably produced foods, wellness and beauty products and even household items. n

California’s Favorite Weekly Car Show

By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Greg Grudt

E

very Sunday for the last 13 years, an automotive phenomenon takes place in our own back yard, the world-famous Supercar Sunday. It’s an event that started off of Mulholland Highway and has turned into a globally recognized automotive event featuring the “who’s who” of the car world.

Supercar Sunday takes place every Sunday at the Westfield Promenade shopping mall in Woodland Hills. The event, which is open to the public, is one of the largest and longest-running weekly car shows in the world. On any given Sunday, you can literally see virtually every exotic car, classic, hot rod, custom car and even race cars! Supercar Sunday has become a place where manufacturers share and debut new models. Recently, Porsche North America shared

82

Calabasas Style

its new hyper-exotic 918 Spyder hybrid; Nissan, a few weeks earlier, brought out the IDX Conceptcars that had previously been seen in only one other place in North America. Supercar Sunday also offers Maqrue Days, the first Sunday of every month. On these days, a certain brand or model is featured, and there is a special reserved parking corral. These “marque days” have become hugely popular, and it is not uncommon for more than 100 Ferraris or Lamborghinis, as well as hundreds of other makes and models, to appear. It is truly spectacular!

I Raised

HOW

much money ? By Marc Cohen

out crowdfunder.com, which focuses on companies looking to raise money in a nontraditional manner. If you are involved in the charity fundraising arena, check out crowdrise.com or appbackr.com, which will give you funding for the next great mobile app.

D

o you have a billion-dollar idea with a $500 budget? How do you go about raising the money so that one day, you can make $19 billion, as WhatsApp did when it sold its texting app to Facebook? You never really know what works until you try. Remember the Pet Rock? Pet rock made its creator, Gary Dahl, $15 million.

How about something silly as bottled water? Can you even imagine the conversation with the boss on that one? “Hey Bill, I have this idea that the public will buy bottled water. Yes that’s right, bottled water.”

So who was able to raise funds in this manner? Actually, quite a few. The most well known product was the Pebble smartwatch, which quickly became a model for crowdsourcing. This new, Neptune Pine smartwatch features a camera, voice calls, video chat and more. It creators were hoping to raise $100,000. Instead, they received more than eight times that. Depending on the deal, you will get something for your money. In Neptune Pine’s case, you will receive the watch for donating. Others have different offers. Location devices that help you find lost items have been popping up like crazy. If you are like me, you will lose everything in your life at least seven times a week. The Chipolo™ allows you to track anything you can attach with their small tag. Its goal was $25,000; it raised $293,000.

“You mean the stuff that comes out of the tap for free?” Low and behold, a multi-billion-dollar business was born. All it takes is some seemingly brilliant idea and, oh yes, some money to produce that idea. Let me introduce you to Crowdfunding. You may have heard of it but weren’t really sure what it’s all about. Here are the facts and the figures: Crowdfunding involves asking multiple individuals for generally small contributions, usually done through websites such as kickstarter.com, which raises donations for creative products. It’s not designed for businesses or charities; it’s meant for people like you and me.

The bottom line is, if you are creative and have a terrific idea but lack the funding, go on “Shark Tank” or try checking out one of the websites above. You might just be the next Warren Buffett. We put a putting green in our back yard last year, and I am hoping to recoup the cost and make a few bucks. So, if you are interested, I’m selling golf memberships for $5,000 each to my exclusive Cohen miniature golf course. Swimming and basketball included. Buy now, before midnight. n See you on the radio. Marc

Additionally, there is indiegogo.com which is a more broad-based site that focuses on areas such as hobbies, music and charities. If you run a business and need additional capital, you should check

Financial Brief

The Challenge of

BEING AVERAGE By Craig L. Israelsen, Ph.D.

P

ortfolio diversification is a virtue, but it can also be seen as a vice because it produces “average” results year to year.

(in those years that it outperformed a multiasset portfolio) was 833 basis points. So, how is it that both end up with a 44-year performance that is basically the same?

A 20% loss requires a 25% gain to break even. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to break even. A 75% loss requires a 300% gain to break even. Thus, the frequent outper-

The S&P 500 Index outperformed a multi-asset portfolio 55 % of the time 24 out of 44 years between 1970 - 2013 (multiasset portfolio comprised of US large and small stock, non-US stock, commodities, real estate, US and non-US fixed income, and cash). But more than that, the annual margin of victory was often dramatic. For example, in 1998, the S&P 500 Index had a return of 28.58% while the multi-asset portfolio produced an annual return of 0.96%, a victory by more than 2,700 basis points. The average margin of victory for the S&P 500

The S&P 500 Index had a 44-year average annualized return of 10.41% vs. 10.29% for the multi-asset portfolio. The answer is the down years. There were more of them for the S&P 500 (nine losses vs. five losses for multi-asset portfolio), and the depth of the plunge was far greater. The average negative return for the S&P 500 Index was -15.2% vs. -8.7% for the multi-asset portfolio. Very simply, negative returns are disproportionately more damaging to a portfolio than the counterbalancing of positive returns of the same size. Let me explain.

formance of the S&P 500 Index compared to a multi-asset portfolio was essentially undermined by the frequency and magnitude of large negative returns in the S&P 500 Index. The large drawdowns of the S&P 500 Index offset its more frequent upside.

So, are “average” diversified returns good enough? Most definitely. But the virtue of multi-asset “average” performance (like most virtues) only becomes fully apparent over time. The challenge of building a multiasset portfolio is in the short-run, not the long

Financial Brief run. Said differently, a multi-asset portfolio will never outperform the best performing individual asset class in any given year, but in the long run, (historically speaking) it will win the portfolio return race with reduced risk. Multi-asset portfolios are steady not flashy. Therein lies the problem: The best performing asset class of last year may create “investor envy,” which can lead to “performance chasing,”which consists of reallocating all or a portion of the portfolio to last year’s winning asset class or strategy. Such an approach is nonsense, but so are a lot of things we humans do. Mark Wendell, of MD Wendell Wealth Partners in Westlake Village, expressed his views: “Using diversifying techniques helps investors protect themselves from themselves—that is, employing diversification strategies will counter investors’ tendency to make the human behavioral error of focusing on the most recent performance and winner, rather than correctly, and most importantly, focusing on achieving a smoother ride with superior longer-term results. This point is especially important when clients are pulling funds out monthly because volatility is not your friend. You end up with a negative dollar cost averaging result due to losses on some monthly payouts. Most people do not realize the difference between investment risk and gambling hope, which is why I put so much emphasis on risk managed returns for my clients’ portfolios.” For example, in 2013, the return of the S&P 500 Index (one of the components of the seven-asset diversified portfolio) was fabulous a calendar-year return of 32.4%. The return of the equally weighted seven-asset portfolio in 2013 was 13.15%. The performance of U.S. large cap stock outperformed the seven-asset “average” return by a large margin in 2013, and investors might now be tempted to over-allocate to U.S. large cap stock. This reminds me of the classic story of the tortoise and the hare. The steady performance of the seven-asset portfolio represents the tortoise ,and chasing last year’s best performing asset class (among the seven asset classes in a diversified portfolio) represents the hare. Consider the results over the past 15 years (1999-2013). The tortoise had a 6.97% annualized return compared to a 4.68% 15-year annualized return for the hare. Moral: Building a broadly diversified portfolio is the only logical investment philosophy, mathematically and emotionally. The emotional roller coaster caused by chasing the performance of individual-asset classes should be self-evident. The mathematics supporting the notion of less volatile portfolio performance have already been discussed; that is, large losses are disproportionately more damaging to a portfolio than positive returns of the same size. There is one more aspect of diversification that I would like to briefly pursue: depth diversification vs. breadth diversification.

The S&P 500 Index is a diversified collection of 500 stocks—all of which fall within ONE asset class: large cap U.S. stock. This represents diversification depth. It’s important, but breadth diversification is more important. Breadth diversification is achieved when multipleasset classes such as stocks, bonds and diversifiers are combined together — precisely the logic of a multi-asset investment portfolio. A properly built portfolio needs depth and breadth diversification. Depth diversification is achieved by using mutual funds and/or ETFs, while breadth diversification is achieved by using a wide variety of “depth-diversified” mutual funds.

Diversification: Depth vs. Breadth

Why is breadth diversification important? Notice the excellent performance of the S&P 500 Index “hare” in 1999. Depth outperforms breadth over short time frames (such as in 2003, 2006, and 2009-2013). However, good years are sometimes followed by meltdowns — as occurred in 2000, 2001 and 2002 for the S&P 500 Index. The “tortoise” seven-asset portfolio underperformed in 1999 but came through in 2000-2002 relatively unscathed. In the end, the seven-asset portfolio, which represents breadth diversification, finished more than $7,600 ahead over the past 15 years. Large cap U.S. stock (i.e., S&P 500 Index) is an important “depth” ingredient within a diversified portfolio, but the S&P 500 Index by itself is not a diversified portfolio. Inasmuch as the S&P 500 Index has annually outperformed a multi-asset portfolio over the past five years, it is important to keep a longer-term perspective to appreciate the value of breadth diversification. Investors who fail to do so are susceptible to performance chasing. n Craig L. Israelsen, Ph.D. is an Executive-in-Residence in the Financial Planning program at Utah Valley University.
