Happy 2017 to all of you! Can you believe it’s already the beginning of a new year?
Happy 2017 to all of you! Can you believe it’s already the beginning of a new year? This time is my favorite time of the year, as it is always a time where we encourage ourselves with a refreshed sense of motivation to better ourselves in all aspects of our lives. The New Year can sometimes be daunting to set numerous resolutions. We tend to forget that our resolutions should be a year long journey, and not stress ourselves to accomplish these goals within the first month. Most resolutions include leading a healthier lifestyle physically and mentally. We want to help contribute to these goals and took the hard work out of getting started. With our featured “Health Check” and “MOVE!” sections, you will find a directory of trusted health and fitness professionals to get you closer to your goals. “Health Check” features the best healthcare providers in the area. From doctors to dentists, hospitals to therapists, you will find our most trusted network available to you. “MOVE!” features a wide variety of ways to get fit in 2017 and these fitness facilities will be sure to keep your motivation going all year long. This issue we are introducing a new section, People to Watch. These featured individuals are making big moves in 2017 and we are thrilled to introduce them to you. In People to Watch you will meet professionals who are doing extraordinary work personally and professionally. In addition to, we are so excited to feature the Hartoonian family this issue. She will be wonderful for this company.” To say that Emil and Ellie are personally invested in this town is certainly an understatement. The love the couple has for Calabasas is crystal clear. “Since I am often times the first face people see when looking to move into the community, I take my job very personally,” Emil reveals. Treasures of Calabasas When Emil and Ellie are not working up a sweat in the local gym, the couple love taking their boys out on the town to try new restaurants. “Ellie and I are foodies, and we love getting the kids involved in trying new things.” During the week, Ellie’s culinary skills take the spotlight. “Like her mother, Ellie is an amazing cook.” Emil proudly goes on to say, “The kids love the traditional Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes she prepares.” Like their parents, the Hartoonian boys have become very integral little parts of this community. Ariyan, the oldest, at 9-years-old, attends Carden Conejo school in Westlake. An emerging food connoisseur, Ariyan takes cues from his father’s adventurous palette and trusts his parents’ taste. “Most of the time he just says, ‘I’ll want what you are having.’ For a 9-year-old, he is really starting to know his tastes,” boasts proud father Emil. Ariyan also loves basketball and is an amazing artist as well. At 6-years-old, the middle Hartoonian son, Arshan, loves art. His creative side shines through with his many beautiful projects and art pieces. “He has the biggest heart and charm for such a sweet little boy,” admires his loving parents. He, like his older brother, attends Carden Conejo and loves to play basketball. The youngest Hartoonian boy, Arman, is just 4-yearsold. Arman attends Boulevard School in Woodland Hills. He is the builder of the bunch. With a wild and crazy imagination, the youngest boy in this motley trio keeps his parents busy. He is a non-stop fountain of gushing energy. Emil and Ellie certainly understand the nuances of building a lifestyle and home in Calabasas. With their three young boys brimming with energy and curiosity, the mantra of this family has become “What’s next?” For a close-knit family like the Hartoonians, finding new and exciting things to do in the area is both the challenge and the reward. Emil and Ellie have tried to instill in their boys a sense of adventure. These busy parents find themselves having to stay one step ahead of their energetic trio. Keeping these boys engaged and occupied is a full-time job in itself. Always trying to keep things fresh and interesting, the Hartoonians of Calabasas continue to explore the undiscovered treasures in their own backyard. n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

STOP SMOKING Hello? If you are smoking, please stop. Besides other terrible systemic effects, the oxygen supply to skin is pinched off by vasoconstriction and the skin wrinkles more easily. Smokers suffer higher rates of skin cancer. In addition, voice, nail, and hair changes signal accelerated aging.
MOISTURIZE The face, body, hands, feet, and neck all need tender, loving care. For the body, the best time to moisturize is just after toweling off from a shower. The moisture is then sealed in. Mineral oils, such as baby oil, are excellent, but beware of the slip hazard. Otherwise, Cetaphil Restoraderm or Cerave cream are good options. Facial moisturizers vary significantly and are recommended based on skin type and age. The neck and hands can benefit from the same sun protection and moisture regimen as the face every day. For specific neck pampering, I love Nectifirm. Happy New Year! Remember that great skin takes discipline. WESTLAKE VILLAGE INN
Almost everyone in our community has been touched by the inspiration and generosity of John L. Notter, chairman of Westlake Properties, Inc., and owner of the four-diamond Westlake Village Inn. Known as the Conejo Valley’s most stylish boutique property, the Westlake Village Inn is a European-style hideaway encompassing 17 lush and verdant acres surrounded by its own private lake. In the summer of 2012, the property launched The Stonehaus, an intimate, all-day enoteca, located in the center of the property’s private vineyard, which has become a favorite destination for winetasting, great food, and comradery for guests and locals alike. This past year, Mr. Notter celebrated the remodeling and expansion of Bogies Outdoor Vista Terrace, where guests now enjoy more of the majestic views of the Inn’s beautiful lake, fountains, and vistas. Anyone who has suffered through the pain and discomfort of severe sinus infections knows just how debilitating they can be. The good news is that these conditions are not just treatable but actually curable now. Dr. Alen Cohen is a board certified nose and sinus surgeon and assistant clinical professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is also the founder and director of the Southern California Sinus Institute (SCSI), which has become one of the premier sinus centers in Los Angeles and Southern California. One of the most common procedures Dr. Cohen routinely performs is the revolutionary, in-office Balloon Sinuplasty™ procedure, for which he is one of the top three performers on the West Coast. This amazing procedure dilates the sinus openings with a balloon (just like opening a clogged artery around the heart) so the sinuses can drain and the person can breathe better, without headaches and recurrent infections. Dr. Cohen has also personally pioneered a breakthrough procedure in the treatment of more-advanced, chronic sinusitis; deviated septa; nasal polyps; and sinus headaches called Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (MIGSS™). As such, patients routinely come to him from all over Southern California for management of their chronic nose and sinus problems for definitive relief.

Dr. Tanya Altmann Treats the Whole Child at Calabasas Pediatrics By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler Over the past few decades, healthcare has changed drastically. Rushed office visits are the norm, and often, no one doctor oversees a patient’s care. Children are the future. They deserve the best, most up-to-date healthcare possible. A new mode of pediatric medicine, the concierge model, is growing in popularity in response to today’s fragmented healthcare system. It emphasizes preventative, holistic care by a central doctor who develops a relationship with a young patient over time. Now, more than ever, it is critical that a single physician helps manage a child’s healthcare. A working mom herself, Dr. Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP, understands the day-to-day challenges that patients and their families face. She opened her concierge practice, Calabasas Pediatrics, in July 2015. Dr. Tanya strives to help parents and children become active participants in their

Families desiring full access to Dr. Tanya via cell phone, email, and video calls, might opt for the VIP level. The lower-cost, most-popular Extra Care level includes 24/7 access and comprehensive, unhurried, same-day appointments. The center also provides as-needed appointments for occasional visits during regular hours. And yes, the doctor even makes house calls, often eliminating the need for a trip to an urgent care center or long wait in the ER. There’s also a helpful interactive symptom checker on her website, with a comprehensive list of symptoms, photos, and advice. Dr. Tanya also helps young patients transition from pediatric to adult care. A mother of three, she’s keenly aware how good nutrition benefits growing bodies and minds. Her latest book, What to Feed Your Baby, helps parents navigate today’s oft-confusing world of nutrition. It stresses the 11 foundation foods critical to brain development and growth – eggs, prunes, avocado, fish, yogurt/cheese/milk, nuts, chicken/ beans, fruit, green veggies, whole grains, and water – that should be the basis of every child’s diet in the three phases of early life: infancy, toddler, and preschooler.

HEADLINE SALON FUNDRAISER FOR THE NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR SOCIETY
Lidia Ortiz, owner of The Headline Salon in Woodland Hills, hosted a special fundraiser to raise money for the National Brain Tumor Society and to help support Nate Newman, a 17-year-old brain cancer survivor. Lidia learned about Nate’s condition through her longtime employee, Mary Jane Trifon who is Nate’s Grandmother. Determined to help, Lidia and her staff have hosted this event for the past three years. Nate was diagnosed with this life-threatening condition in the summer of 2012 when he was just 13 – and it has changed his life forever. This years’ event on October 30, celebrated Nate’s three years of remission. Nate, his brother Max, and parents Jacquee and Steve Newman attended this event where friends supporting “Team Nate-Dawg” raised about $10,000. Nate uses his own experience as motivation to give back by mentoring other kids who have spent part of their youth battling cancer.
B’YACHAD SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RAISES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
On October 27, under the evening stars, in Calabasas, Michelle Conwiser hosted B’yachad, Southern California’s, “Raising Breast Cancer Awareness One Glass at A Time” event. This fundraising event surpassed B’yachad’s expectations, raising over $6,500.00 and reinforced Hadassah’s committment to do what it has done for over 100 years, which is to dedicate itself to medical research without regard to borders, religious, affiliation, monetary needs, or artificial political boundaries. Jen Levin, a local resident and breast cancer survivor bravely shared her courageous story, winning her battle against doctors, the insurance industry, and beating cancer itself, in front of approximately 100 members and friends. Guests painted wine glasses and enjoyed delicious food sponsored by Brent’s Deli of Westlake, Nothing Bundt Cakes of West Hills, and wine, donated by Aja vineyards, and Santa Barbara Wineries. All proceeds benefitted Hadassah Medical Organization’s Breast Cancer Research.

Providing a Great Antidote for Chronic Pain 112
Calabasas Style
By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler Dual board-certified, interventional pain-management physician Dr. Jeffrey Glaser opened Glaser Pain Relief Center in Encino more than 15 years ago. His goal is to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic pain, with an emphasis on conditions of the spine that cause symptoms, such as back pain, neck pain, and sciatica. At some point in their lives, eight out of 10 people suffer from a major episode of back pain. Living with pain can turn one’s life upside down. Dr. Glaser offers alternative, minimally invasive solutions to surgery. Interestingly, greater than 50% of his patients have had previous neck or back surgery and see Dr. Glaser because they still suffer from pain. Back and neck pain can be disabling, depressing, and very upsetting, says Dr. Glaser. There are situations where surgery is “needed,” but most of the time, patients don’t “need” surgery, and less-invasive treatment modalities can get a patient out of a pain crisis. Dr. Glaser works with the finest spine surgeons in the community so that when a patient does need a referral, there is continuity of a dedicated care team. The field of interventional pain management utilizes the most stateof-the-art, advanced, and minimally invasive techniques to treat a patient’s underlying problem. It is critical that patients first have a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with Dr. Glaser with complete review of studies and other medical records. Once Dr. Glaser has evaluated a patient, he can recommend a treatment plan. Some procedures utilized by Dr. Glaser include nerve ablations/rhizotomies, selective nerve-root blocks, epidurals, sympathetic blocks, Botox, minimally invasive discectomy (no incisions), and spinal-cord stimulation.
Dr. Glaser and his staff continue to improve patients’ quality of life while adhering to the Hippocratic oath to “first do no harm.” Min-

cumstances, hobbies, habits, and goals, he can best custom tailor treatment plans. After graduating from the prestigious Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Dr. Glaser completed his internship and residency at the renowned UCLA Medical Center. He then practiced in Las Vegas before returning home to Southern California to open his private practice in Encino in 2001. One of the most exciting advancements for patients suffering from chronic back and leg pain is the newest generation of spinal cord stimulators (SCS). “SCS is like a pacemaker for pain,” says Dr. Glaser. A SCS is a device that delivers high frequency electrical signals to the spinal cord via leads which are implanted in the epidural

space. The signals modulate or change the signal of pain going to the brain. The net result is that patients experience relief of back and neck pain without major surgery and without dangerous narcotics. One of the best parts about SCS is that patients can actually “test drive” this treatment modality to see if it is an option for them before having it implanted.

mal. Unfortunately, these signs can signal the presence of infection that, if left untreated, can lead to possible systemic complications
Heart disease claims 600,000 lives annually, making it America’s number one killer. The connection between heart disease and bad gums is straight-forward: The mouth is a gateway to the body, and bacteria from infected gums can cause inflammation, attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. Clots subsequently decrease the blood flow to the heart, thereby causing elevated blood pressure and increasing the risk of a heart attack. We strongly believe that this unfortunate scenario can easily be diagnosed and prevented with regular dental care. Additional studies, recently published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, have also shown that gum disease may be linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers analyzed brain samples from people with Alzheimer’s and found gum-disease-related bacteria in 40% of the brain samples. No such bacteria were found in the brain samples from people without Alzheimer’s. The rationale for the link suggests that bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain, where it can potentially lead to brain-tissue degeneration that appears similar
and potential loss of bone and gum tissue in the mouth. The most exciting news for patients concerned about gum disease is that we now have technology in the dental office to screen and diagnose the presence of gum disease with fairly high accuracy. The test involves a saliva swab in the office, which is then analyzed for bacteria. Once confirmed, the dentist can prescribe appropriate medication to eradicate the bacteria. Subsequently, the dental hygienist can remove the infectious plaque and treat the affected tissues with antimicrobial rinses. After the dentist addresses and treats periodontal disease, a consistent in-home preventive-care routine will be required. This could include the use of an oral irrigator (such as Waterpik), twice-daily brushings, use of a recommended oral rinse, and a diet rich in Vitamins A & C. Partnering with your dentist and routine dental examinations will greatly aid in managing and preventing any future periodontal disease.

FERGUS MEETS
Cesar Millan By Beth Cone Kramer Photography by Debbie Vaccarello To Calabasas residents Anngel and Victor Benoun, Fergus is truly a miracle dog. The couple’s golden retriever rescue has garnered worldwide attention. “He wasn’t supposed to survive. He was injured with third-degree burns when his abuser doused him with battery acid. He was in a holding cell to be put down, and now, he is thriving,” shares Victor. “He weighed just 45 pounds and is now 66 pounds, strong and healthy. An amazing series of events brought him to where he is.” The story of Fergus and the Benouns began in the summer of 2015 when Anngel watched the news of his rescue on NBC4’s News. At the same time, the couple’s senior golden, Sammy, also a rescue, was at the end of his life. Anngel remembers, “I told my husband that if our beloved Sammy passes away and Fergus survived, I desperately wanted him.”Although the couple had previously rescued from Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue, they faced stiff competition from over 400 other applicants. Anngel was determined to add Fergus to the family and, later, to recruit famed dog whisperer Cesar Millan to help Fergus with his onleash aggression issues. Anngel reached Millan through NBC anchor/reporter Robert Kovacik, who had been nominated for an Emmy for his story about Fergus. Millan loved the story and wanted to help. “Our goal from day one for Fergus was to have him become a certified therapy dog,” shared Victor. “USC county burn and trauma centers have already said they want him. He will be the first dog ever at the burn center, and he has gone to multiple events, interacting with burn and trauma victims.” Anngel adds that she would like to see Fergus participate in schools to show kids about overcoming adversity. Anngel says Millan recognized the problem immediately. The couple had been allowing Fergus to be the “leader of the pack” on their walks. “We were focusing on his terrible trauma and trying to baby him but Cesar taught us that Fergus only focuses on today. He doesn’t think about yesterday or tomorrow,” she explains. What’s next for Fergus? He has appeared along with the Benouns and Millan on T.D. Jakes Show on The Oprah Winfrey Network and is focused on training for his certification through Love on 4 Paws Animal Assisted Therapy organization. You can follow Fergus on Facebook at facebook.com/ Fergusgoldenretrieversurvivor. For more information about how your dog might train to be a therapy dog, contact Love on 4 Paws at loveon4paws.org. n

Motor4Toys
Charitable Exotic Car Show
By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Greg Grudt
The 13th Annual Motor4Toys Charitable Exotic Car Show and Toy Drive was a huge success. Thousands of car enthusiasts from all over California headed to the Anthem Building in Woodland Hills for what has become the largest automotive toy drive in the world. Motor4Toys began in the El Camino Shopping Center 13 years ago, and its genesis was a little car event called “Supercar Sunday.” Many readers might remember the weekly car show that brought so many enthusiasts together so close to Calabasas. Fast-forward and Motor4Toys has collected well over $5,000,000 in toys that are distributed to children in need all over the state. Proudly, Motor4Toys operates by giving 100% to charity. At this year’s event, just about every car imaginable was on display. The Auto Gallery, Coastline Motorsport, and Chrysler presented sponsors, and they brought out some of the rarest and most exotic cars. The Petersen Automotive Museum was also present as a sponsor and attended the event with the Checkered Flag 200’s members in full attendance. On the day of the event, over 45,000 toys were collected and then distributed to supporting agencies that help deliver toys to children in need. It was a wonderful day! n

Ask the
Pharmacist
Q A
Everyone around me is sick; how can I stay healthy when I’m surrounded by germs?
Illnesses, such as colds, flu, strep, and pneumonia, are much more prevalent in wintertime, but there are ways to strengthen your immune system. A healthy immune system protects you by creating a barrier to stop invaders from entering your body. And if one slips by, it destroys them. When your immune system is depleted, bacteria, viruses, and toxins can overwhelm your body. The result? You get sick. To strengthen your immune system, first, get a flu shot, if you haven’t already. This is the most important thing you can do. Flu season typically peaks in February and can continue until May. Second, wash your hands often with soap and water. Viruses can live for hours on surfaces. If you can’t get to a sink, use hand sanitizer that contains alcohol. Keep your hands away from your face. Cold and flu viruses enter through your eyes, nose, and mouth. Third, get plenty of aerobic exercise and sleep. Aerobic exercise is any activity that gets your heart pumping. It increases your body’s natural virus-killing cells. Walking fast for 20 minutes three times a week has been shown to improve immune response. Sleep is important too because sleep deprivation is known to suppress immune system function. Fourth, maintain a healthy diet. Avoid alcohol and sugar because microbes love sugar. A diet rich in antioxidant vitamins can boost resistance to infection. Eat in color; dark-green, red, yellow, and orange fruits and veggies are packed with antioxidants. Try berries, citrus fruits, kiwi, apples, red grapes, kale, onions, spinach, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY HOLIDAY HOMES TOUR AND BOUTIQUE Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara’s annual Holiday Homes Tour Boutique took place on Saturday,
Fifth, boost your immune system with supplements and vitamins. Get vitamin C and zinc (in lozenge form) and helpful herbs like Echinacea, ginseng, and garlic. Finally, relax. Evidence shows that your immune system revs up when you destress, but when under constant stress, you’re more vulnerable to everything from the common cold to major diseases. Take time for yourself, get a massage or do anything that relaxes you.
December 3, and Sunday, December 4, at a new location: St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Westlake Village. This fundraiser was a self-guided tour that showcased the beautiful holiday decorations of Conejo Valley homes. This event is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers, with proceeds providing cancer support, education, and hope, free of charge, to local people affected by cancer and their families. “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” ~ Cicero Being part of the Calabasas community gives us the luxury to look at our surroundings and embrace all that they offer. We have a lot to be grateful for in our unique city.
GLO DRY CELEBRATES 7TH ANNIVERSARY Glo Dry – the area’s most popular Blow Dry Bar and Beauty Lounge celebrated their 7th Anniversary in Calabasas. Recently, former Mayor James Bozajian delivered the Calabasas state of the city address. While listening, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Our city has grown rapidly. We are a growing community where the residents and businesses are both enthralled and excited about our future. We have truly come a long way. I wonder what the founders, the Chumash Indians, would have thought about the Kardashians? Here are some shining examples of what is great about Calabasas: • Our Calabasas football team is an 14-0 on the season. What a victory for them. Go Coyotes! They will be playing in the State Championship Semi Finals. • We have a fantastic nationally ranked school district, which attracts families to Calabasas. • Moody’s has upgraded the City of Calabasas bond credit rating to AAA. • Our streets are well-groomed with beautiful parks, a new senior center, a library, and a gorgeous city hall. • The Calabasas Tennis & Swim Center and Calabasas Country Club are top notch. • The community offers a variety of fun annual events: the Pumpkin Festival, the Calabasas Malibu Food and Wine Festival, the Calabasas Fine Arts Festival, the Calabasas Film Festival, concerts in the park and more. • We even have a city song, which, upon request, Mayor Bozajian will sing for you! The upcoming holiday season will bring further wealth and success to our community. Shoppers and restaurant goers come from all the neighboring counties and cities to enjoy our homespun offerings. We welcome their presence and, most of all, their business. Our success is the gateway to their future business. Wishing all a happy and prosperous holiday season.
