A NOTE FROM THE

editor

Happy New Year! Here’s to us starting off on the right foot with peace and goodwill to all. Last year was a tough one for many, and it ended with fires destroying so much so close to home. The only good thing that came from it was people reaching out to those in need. It brought many closer together. There are still those that are just devastated by losing their homes, so we suggest continuing to reach out in any way to donate your time and household items, clothes, and even money to the charity of your choice. Starting off the New Year is a great time to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes. To help you along, we are featuring Health Check, a directory of trusted healthcare professionals with categories from dental to podiatry to dermatology. In addition, our MOVE section features a wide variety of fitness facilities to help you get fit and have fun in 2018. We even included Healthy Choices, with 100-calorie snack ideas so you don’t feel like you are missing out. Fran Drescher of Cancer Schmancer opened our minds at her 3rd Annual Health Summit, bringing in experts to help us be medical consumers and take back the control of our lives. Ten percent of cancer is genetic and 90% is environmental; the good news is we have the power to make many changes in our environment which would be the best prevention. People

Readers... From our

Calabasas Style receives many phone calls, emails, Instagram comments, and Facebook posts from our readers. We would like to share some of them with you. Calabasas Style magazine is my favorite magazine!! — Resident at the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival

Just want to say how much I enjoyed your Nov/Dec issue of Calabasas Style magazine... especially the story about Marvin’s Garden. All kidding aside, the real reason for my note today is to compliment your “Note from the Editor.” As one of the founding members of the city, along with being on the first city council and the third mayor, I was most pleased when you spoke about family and community and that it takes a village and ‘Calabasas is that perfect community.’ It was a difficult journey and many years of dedication by a civic-minded group of people that wanted a ‘Village.’ To see that acknowledged is among the rewards! Thanks again for showing ‘Marvin’s Garden.’ — Marvin Lopata

The Nov/Dec issue is the best one yet! It really is a great issue, and it just keeps getting better and better every time! — Dave, Local Resident

Your team is so amazing. — Nick Belardo, Compass Marketing Associate

Your support of the local community and the networks that you foster make living here better. You are a mirror that allows a community to take a look at itself and continue to improve. — Tammy Randall Wood

THE KINGDOM

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by John Salangsang The Kingdom, a luxury shoe and handbag destination located in The Commons at Calabasas, partnered with Kimberly Chandler, wife of NBA player Tyson Chandler and local Calabasas resident, to host a “sip and shop event benefitting The Foundation for Living Beauty. Over 40 women attended the event to show their support, sip champagne, and browse the incredible selection of high-end offerings in the store. The sip and shop brought awareness to the Foundation for Living Beauty, whose mission is to empower women to increase their physical wellness and emotional stability while coping with the taxing effects of cancer and chemotherapy. A portion of all sale proceeds went to the Foundation, in honor of cancer survivor Joumana Kidd, the mother of an employee at The Kingdom and ex-wife of NBA coach Jason Kidd. Since 1966, it has been a tradition of the chapter to honor its most recent graduates for their years of service to the chapter and their communities. This year, the achievements of 18 dedicated young women, the Debutantes of 2017, were celebrated. As these beautiful young women gracefully performed the Saint James Bow, they reached out to the waiting arm of their fathers and began their promenade around the dance floor as their mothers’ love, pride, and joy lit up the ballroom. People to Watch Steve Elson, PH.D. Chief Executive Officer

Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families

Growing up in a children’s home in Arkansas, Dr. Steve Elson never thought he would be involved in any endeavor resembling a children’s home. But after receiving his doctorate in psychology at Michigan State University, he was sidetracked from his career goal in academia to get “real-world” clinical experience first-hand. It happened to be at a children’s residential facility in Connecticut. Once there, he never looked back. He realized that working with children/youth and their families was his calling. Steve soon gravitated into management and eventually moved to California as executive director of a similar agency in Pasadena. Now, as CEO of Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, he oversees a program that resembles a “children’s home” – a residential treatment center located on

Serving about 350 children and youth that first year, Casa Pacifica’s array of services has grown to include a full continuum of care offered through 17 different programs – from residential treatment to in-home and schoolbased behavioral/mental-health services. They have offices in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, and Camarillo and touch the lives of one out of every 100 children and youth in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties – more than 3,500 annually.

Under construction is a new cottage for youth with substance abuse/mental-health issues. The culmination of a $16.6 million capital campaign, it includes a multipurpose building for vocational education, training, and conference space along with clinical and administrative offices. A leader in the field, Steve has published a number of papers/articles, is active in public policy efforts benefiting children in foster care and other public service systems, and has served as president of five different state and national organizations. n

Under Steve’s leadership, Casa Pacifica has become the largest agency on California’s Central Coast serving children and youth with severe emotional and behavioral challenges and their families. All programs are nationally accredited and have received state and national recognition

With over 20 years of experience in education, behavioral therapy, and child development, Jennifer Lopata has developed an affinity for helping children and teens navigate through adolescence and early adulthood. Earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology from UCLA and a master’s degree in social work (MSW) from USC, Jennifer became a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and spent her early career counseling severely emotionally disturbed adolescents. The challenging nature of her work served to develop strategies that enabled Jennifer to understand the processes essential to overcoming obstacles for any child or teen. soil. Through water and soil analysis to determine suitability, the conditions in Calabasas proved to be ideal for growing Tuscan olive trees. Once they were given the greenlight, Harry and La Verne headed to McEvoy Ranch of Petaluma in April of 2011 to select their trees. Along with advice on pruning, harvesting, and other practices, the Hutchisons left McEvoy Ranch that day with 200 of their very own Tuscan olive trees. Among the Pendolinos, Frantoios, and Leccinos, each of the 200 trees stood about three-feet tall. These trees, in pots for four to six years at McEvoy Ranch, were planted into the welcoming Calabasas soil. With the knowledge that olive trees need more water in the first five years, the Hutchisons developed a special irrigationmanagement program that allowed them to control the amount of water going to their trees at any given time. FGL of Santa Paula continued to

leaf analysis to determine the best type and frequency of fertilizer distribution for their olives. The olive trees today are 10-feet tall. Harry and La Verne soon realized that they excelled in different roles in their business. La Verne found herself thriving in more operational tasks, such as managing the front office as well as the legal, marketing, and technology needs of the company. Harry found himself spending his time working the grove and taking care of the trees. During the two-week-long harvest, though, it’s all hands on deck. By harvesting the olives early, in mid-September, the Hutchisons found that the purple and green young olives yielded more pungent oil. After the olives are de-leafed and washed, they are milled within six hours of harvest to produce their special blend of extra virgin olive oil. They purchased the Spremoliva C30 mill in 2016 from Mori-Tem, a family-owned manufacturing plant in Tavernelle, Italy. The oil is then stored in stainless steel, foodgrade Fustis that are made in Italy. At this point, Hutchison olive oil is still only in the hands of their “taste-tester family and friends. They plan to one day produce a boutique oil of the highest quality. In fact, Harry and La Verne have the New York International Olive Oil Competition in their sights. With over 900 olive oil entries from 27 different countries, the Hutchisons hope to win gold someday. n

rejuvenation procedure. Cosmetic medical techniques have advanced greatly in recent years. Many aspects of facial aging can be addressed with safe and effective procedures that offer little downtime and natural-looking results. While wrinkles, brown spots, and lost volume can be treated with existing procedures, until now, there has been no minimally invasive way to lift the deeper layers of mid-facial skin, one of the major contributors to an aged and tired appearance. Silhouette InstaLift is a simple in-office procedure to re-contour your face by lifting the deeper layers of your skin for a more youthful appearance. During a short in-office procedure, Michael Sarti, MD, will insert the patented Silhouette InstaLift sutures to lift the deeper layers of the skin in your mid-face, cheek, or neck area. The treatment does not require general anesthesia and typically takes 45 minutes. You will see results right away, and the recovery time is minimal. The

sutures are naturally absorbed by your body over time. The sutures are absorbed while stimulating the production of collagen to aid in healthy skin renewal for naturallooking, long-lasting results. Dr. Sarti has 30 years of advanced surgical experience and utilizes this knowledge to place the InstaLift sutures in the best position for your facial features. During your consultation, Dr. Sarti will discuss whether this technique is suitable for you and will create a treatment plan to ensure you achieve the results you desire. WHAT IS NORMAL

Forgetfullness?

By Irene Marshall We are all so busy these days that there are times we feel like we are losing our minds. We forget things and go downstairs only to realize we don’t remember why we are there. How many times have we gone to the grocery store for just a few things and our mind goes blank on half of them? We wonder what the heck is going on and if this is normal? Many of these forgetful episodes can be written off as to how busy we are, lack of sleep, medications, stress, depression, or even thyroid issues. As we get older, there is wear and tear on all of our body parts, including our brain. It’s good for us to realize what normal forgetfulness is versus something you should discuss with your doctor.

Normal forgetfulness: Unusual forgetfulness: - You forget about an appointment

- You miss many appointments

- You can’t remember all the names of the people you met at a wedding

- You forget you went to the wedding

- You forget what an old friend does for a living

- You forget what your friend does for a living right after talking about it

- You forget if you put two or three teaspoons of sugar in your coffee

- You can’t work the coffee pot

- You lose things like your keys, phone, or sunglasses

- You can’t make sense of the numbers in your check book

- You forget what day it is

- You feel lost about time

- You get lost going to a friend’s home you have not been to in a while

- You get lost going home from the grocery store

- You forget the name of a device

- You call a “car” a “bench”

- You forget someone’s name

- You forget your sister’s name

The best way to keep your brain healthy and your memory strong as you get older is to have an active lifestyle, get regular physical activity, and engage in mental activity and social interactions. If you or your family recognize more serious memory issues, please consult your physician just to be safe. n

Ask the

Pharmacist

Q

My doctor would not prescribe an antibiotic for me when I was sick. I eventually felt better, but I think the antibiotic would have healed me faster. Why can’t I take an antibiotic?

A

Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs, however up to 50% of all antibiotics prescribed are not needed. Each year in the United States, at least

2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die. The use of antibiotics is the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance. Below are some common illnesses that patients often assume can be treated with antibiotics while, in fact, antibiotics are not appropriate for them. Bronchitis. Occurs when the airways of the lungs swell and produce mucus. The symptoms last less than three weeks. Acute bronchitis is usually caused by a virus and often occurs after an upper-respiratory infection. It almost always gets better on its own. Common cold/runny nose. More than 200 viruses cause the common cold. The infections are spread through the air and close personal contact. When germs that cause colds infect the nose and sinuses, they may produce mucus of a white, yellow, or green color. This is normal and does not mean antibiotics are needed. Sinus infections. Occur when fluid is trapped or blocked in the sinuses, allowing germs to grow. Viruses cause 90% of adult cases and 50–70% in children. Antibiotics may be needed if the sinus infection is caused by bacteria. Sore throat. Most sore throats are caused by viruses, however strep throat is caused by bacteria. Only 20–30% of sore throats in children are strep, and in adults, it’s only 5–15%. Strep throat must be diagnosed by a lab, not visually.

Ask the

Pediatrician How much exercise do my kids really need?

Kids and teens need at least 60 minutes of exercise activity a day, and unfortunately, school P.E. doesn’t usually count for much. The best thing you can do is work out together as a family: an after-dinner stroll, bike riding, hiking—even walking the dog! Exercise improves self-esteem, reduces stress, and decreases the risk of serious health issues, such as obesity, heart disease, and stroke, later in life. 2–3 year-olds: Toddlers thrive on unstructured play. Climbing, running, jumping, playing in a sandbox are fun and healthy activities. Join in—they’ll love it, and you’ll get some exercise, too. 4–5 year-olds: With increasing coordination, 4 and 5-year-olds can play catch, dribble a ball, and take part in organized games. Biking and swimming are great options, too, but be careful as kids at this age still lack judgment, safety awareness, and coordination. 6–12 year-olds: Find out what your child likes: team sports or noncompetitive activities such as swimming, gymnastics, or martial arts. Demonstrate your commitment by practicing at home, coaching, and showing up at your child’s games. 13–18 year-olds: Unfortunately, many teens spend more time exercising your credit card than their muscles. So, encourage whatever activity they enjoy: competitive sports, skating, rock climbing, or snowboarding. Take a ski trip, go to the beach, or travel to the mountains with the entire family. Exercise should become as much of a routine part of your family’s life as eating and sleeping. By stressing fitness with your children, you help ensure that they will stay active throughout their lives. Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP, is the founder of Calabasas Pediatrics. She’s also a best-selling parenting book author and assistant clinical professor at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital.

The practice of yoga, a movement meditation, creates a space where you can meet your most authentic self. Within this space, you can work on fulfilling the intention you set for yourself in the New Year. This movement meditation is accessible to children and veteran yogis alike in a two studio setting: one heated and one non-heated room. s y v e h C c i Class l a C o S f o

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Greg Grudt The 36th Annual Classic Chevy Show is an event not to miss. This show not only brings a variety of classics and hot rods but late-model street cars as well. The show is on May 6, 2018. If you are unfamiliar with the Classic Chevy Club of Southern California, there might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there. The Club has chosen Rancho San Antonio Boys Town, not only as their location, but also as the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Rancho, which helps provide underprivileged youth a safe home and learning environment to help secure their futures. Over the last dozen years, the club has donated over $110,000 to Rancho. The boys at Rancho will be present to assist with the show and provide an amazing barbeque. What many people do know is that this show is open to all makes and models. Everyone is welcome to the show. The more the merrier. Beyond having a great show, it is a huge goal of the Chevy Club to generate as much revenue as possible for Rancho. The club has a strong connection with Rancho and Brother John, who operates Rancho, and they do their best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible. For

INDEPENDENCE RIDE On Sunday, November 12, corporate sponsor Tire Pros and its dealers united in their mission to mobilize our wounded veterans and raise money for The Independence Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides all-terrain mobility devices and other services to disabled veterans. Supporters and participants of the ride helped severely wounded veterans regain their independence and experience activities they were previously unable to enjoy. The money raised through the ride gives disabled veterans the opportunity to get back outside and enjoy doing the things they love through a variety of mobility devices, each completely customized according to the veteran’s injuries, lifestyle, and family goals. The Independence Ride featured a 62-mile, 25-mile, 8-mile, and 3-mile ride throughout the morning. The rides ranged in routes from Lake Sherwood to a loop through San Fernando and Simi Valley to Agoura Hills. Each ride featured rest stops at the various Tire Pros locations, which offered water, Gatorade, and protein snacks.

Motor4Toys Charity Car Show

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Tommy Huth & David Rosenthal The 14th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Car Show and Toy Drive was a huge success. The car community and the community at large supported this great event by coming out in record numbers. Cars from all over the western United States showed up packed with toys to donate to underprivileged children. It has become an annual tradition for thousands of people and tens of thousands of toys! Presented by The Auto Gallery and Coastline Motorsport, both located in Woodland Hills, and hosted at the Anthem Blue Cross building in Warner Center, Motor4Toys has become the show to go to in December. Just about every car club imaginable supported the event, from Ferraris and Lamborghinis to classics, imports, hot rods, 4x4s, and everything in between. Over the last fourteen years, Motor4Toys has collected well over $5,000,000 in toys that are then distributed to children in need all over the state. A little grassroots movement has turned into one of the largest toy drives in the state. Motor4Toys has continued to grow outside of the car community. Partnering with schools, businesses, clubs and volunteer organizations, it is the Foundation’s goal to include as many people as possible who can assist during the holiday season. Our goal is to grow outside of the car community and to hopefully cover the entire state of California, helping as many kids as possible. Next year is the 15th Anniversary, and it is going to be BIG!
