A NOTE FROM THE
editor
Happy New Year!
We hope and pray 2021 is nothing like 2020. None of us have a crystal ball to know what is around the next corner but I have to say that many people did a great job in 2020 adapting the best they could with COVID-19 lurking at every corner. I hope businesses can hang on and rebuild their clientele, and I pray people are safe and healthy. More than ever, we need to remember to be kind. We don’t know what other people have gone through. We also need to keep ourselves healthy and fit. It might have been a little harder for some last year with the COVID 10 (pounds) many packed on. We ate and drank more than usual, so there is no time like the present to get on a good path for 2021. Start a new exercise routine if you slacked off, either inside or outside depending on what the safe protocols are. Step on the scale or try on your favorite jeans and check in to see if perhaps you might want to skip desserts for a while. And most importantly, check in with your doctors to keep up on your health. There are measures in place for safe visits. Many people let their medical appointments slide last year, but there is nothing more important. If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. Starting off this year, we have highlighted the trusted physicians and healthcare providers in a directory for you. These are the people who can keep us in tip-top shape for years to come. Do not miss our People to Watch section featuring individuals who make a difference and are the ones to watch in 2021. Please note that Calabasas Style is sensitive to our current circumstances during these unprecedented times. All event photos were taken safely, heeding all safety regulations and recommendations relevant at the time.

What We Have Been
Up To
By Kaylie Carafelli
When the pandemic started, we thought stay-at-home orders might last a couple weeks. So, when we ended up spending most of 2020 quarantining, we adjusted our lives accordingly. We’re now grateful for simpler things, like trips to the beach, hikes in the great outdoors, and perfectly mixed libations.

____________________________________ ____________________________________ The Casa Pacifica Angels Spotlight on Style Fashion Show returned for its 19th year via virtual platform on Saturday, November 21. Susan and Ken Bauer returned as hosts for the revamped event featuring returning fashion designer Kevan Hall. Hall showcased his beautiful 2020 collection in an exclusive pre-recorded fashion show with a behindthe-scenes look at his creative process. Sponsors and guests of their choosing received Four Seasons Hotel brunch boxes delivered to their homes the morning of the show. The extensive online silent auction spanned the entire weekend, opening Friday morning and ending Sunday at 5:00 p.m. In spite of this year’s challenges to host events, Casa Pacifica managed to gross over $95,000 through its virtual Spotlight on Style. Lori Silvey and Maureen Turley-Gutierrez, chairpersons of the 2020 event, and their committee worked relentlessly to create another fantastic show. For more information, visit casapacifica.org.

THE IMPROTA TEAM ANNUAL HIDDEN HILLS PET CALENDAR ____________________________________ ____________________________________
Compass Realtors Jason and Missy Improta love representing sellers and buyers in the luxury and ultra-luxury real estate space. One of their favorite aspects of the job is getting to know the wonder ful people in the community – along with their furry friends. When they discovered just how many unique pets there are in Hidden Hills, they decided to share their love of these animals by producing an annual “Hidden Hills Pet Calendar” that they publish themselves. The process is a labor of love as they take their own photos and get to learn about each pet’s unique personality. When completed – the calendars are mailed to all of the homeowners in Hidden Hills where the featured pets become the famous residents. “We really have such an amazing time playing with and featuring these pets and the community of Hidden Hills.” For more information and a look behind the scenes, visit improta.com/calendar.

information and articles, along with advice and kind words when needed. We remain big supporters of that community.” The couple also assists numerous local charities, from school fundraising to outreach programs at their church. “We just want to give back in any way large or small,” says Tracy. Work is also of prime importance to Team Smith. The couple consistently ranks in the top 1% of real estate teams nationwide. Although their jobs at Keller Williams take up much of their time, they say it feels incredibly rewarding to them to see their clients--who’ve become friends--raving about the community. Tracy and David continue to build alliances with architects, builders, marketing professionals, photographers, mortgage bankers, appraisers, and others to streamline the entire process for their clients. Whether clients desire to sell a condo or other luxury estate, move up, downsize, build a dream home, purchase for the first time; or invest in real estate, David and Tracy help get the desired results. “Family is our big why,” notes David, “and carving out time to spend with the people we care about most is a must. We love participating as a family in community events and building a sense of community.” Tracy agrees wholeheartedly, noting how “being a contributing part of the communities we serve in our real estate business is such a rewarding part of what we do.” Spending time with family for the Smiths also includes two little Maltese pups, Daisy and Harley, and fun family vacations, such as skiing in Mammoth or water sports at Lake Arrowhead. Tracy’s mom, Rosalie Cavanaugh, lives nearby at Belmont Village. They wanted her to participate with this article, but due to Covid restrictions, they decided to play it safe. They also love visiting David’s roots in Charleston. Originally from South Carolina, David graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He grew up in the family construction and development business before relocating to Los Angeles in 1999. Tracy attended Wayne State University before pursuing a business career in New York City and eventually settling in Los Angeles. Prior to real estate, she managed her own successful business, working as a makeup artist for print, film, and television. The Smiths can be seen visiting some of their favorite local restaurants, such as Toscanova, The Six, King’s Fish House, and The Stand, or grabbing gelato with their girls at Tifa Chocolate and Gelato. n

“LOVE ROCKS GARDEN BUILT AT WEST HILLS HOSPITAL On the afternoon of October 20, West Hills Hospital and Medical Center hosted a dedication ceremony for its new Love Rocks garden, a gift from local nonprofit Connecting a Caring Community. The garden features painted rocks with positive messages to lift the spirits of patients and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through their Love Rocks campaign, Connecting a Caring Community is mobilizing the community to paint thousands of rocks with messages of encouragement, kindness, and love. The rocks will then be built into gardens at hospitals, schools, and other organizations. West Hills Hospital was the first organization to receive its Love Rocks, which will be scattered throughout the gardens in front of the hospital. In addition to uplifting messages for COVID-19 patients, the rocks also feature words of inspiration and compassion to boost the morale of frontline medical teams dealing with the pandemic every day. VALENTINE’S DAY
Ideas Leave them Love Notes This sweet and simple Valentine’s tradition is one of my favorites. Every year, February 1 through 14, I remind my family how much I love and appreciate them by leaving them a daily love message or a favorite moment we shared with a photo. You can purchase pre-cut hearts at your local craft store or use any stationary or construction paper you have at home. Display them by taping them on a bedroom door or a window or string them on twine using clothespins. Surprise loved ones by leaving a sweet note on their favorite drink!
Make a special family breakfast or dinner A unique breakfast or dinner themed in red is the perfect way to show your love. It doesn’t have to be complicated. For breakfast, you can do something simple, like chocolate chip heart-shaped pancakes or crepes, or if you like shortcuts like me, you can get away with store-bought cinnamon rolls or doughnuts and fresh berries. Your meal doesn’t have to be elaborate to be special—just something that your family likes but doesn’t get very often. For dinner, make heart-shaped pizzas with everyone’s favorite toppings. A heart-shaped cookie cutter can be used to shape the mozzarella or pepperoni into hearts. Pair it with a Caesar salad with heart-shaped croutons. Anything made with love and as a family is perfection on Valentine’s Day.
Give loved ones a homemade coupon book Customize coupons for your family. They could include: • Date with mom or dad • Skip a chore • Choose the family movie • Get the meal of your choice • Choose a game to play with mom or dad

Lamborghini HURACÁN STO
By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Lamborghini
The Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Omologata is a “Super Sports Car” inspired by the racing heritage of Lamborghini. The Huracán STO is as close as you can get to a street-legal Lamborghini race car for the road, and it may just be a race car for the road. Heck, I’ll just say it: It is a race car. The Huracán STO features an incredible naturally aspirated V10 that produces 640 horsepower. The rear-wheel drive Huracán STO delivers exhilarating acceleration of 0-62.1 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds, 0-124 miles per hour in 9.0 seconds, and a top speed of 192 miles per hour. With a focus on aerodynamics and weight, Lamborghini utilized the latest in technology and space-aged materials to ensure that the Huracán STO would not only have a superior power-to-weight ratio over its competitors, but that it would ultimately provide one of the greatest handling “Super Sports Cars” that could be driven on the road. Lamborghini’s aggressive designs are expected, but the Huracán STO sports an entirely new exterior design which is a direct reflection and inspiration of the Lamborghini race cars. Lamborghini is quoted: “The Huracán STO is the result of the collaboration between Lamborghini’s R&D, Squadra Corse, and Centro Stile departments, with every line and every feature aesthetically outstanding while optimized to ensure the best driving performance.” The Huracán STO is priced at $327,838, which to some is a bargain as you have both a world-class race car as well as a street-legal race car. The car is the embodiment of Lamborghini’s current finest offerings in a very special package. If you can get your hands on one, I say do it! n

Warm Contemporary Style of 2021

The Beauty of Nature

and yellow wildflowers as they brighten an entire mountain-
Nature makes us feel closer to the infinite. Surrounded by its inescapable beauty, whether a delicate pink bud about to share its colors with the world or a butterfly practicing its first tentative flight, we feel a deep spiritual connection to our planet and the universe. If you’re lucky enough to notice the vulnerability of a spider web wet from the morning dew, you’ll realize these liquid jewels are even more precious than pearls due to their oh-so-short lifespan. We’re truly fortunate to live in Southern California, where we can walk in nature throughout the year without the burden of surprise winter snowstorms, thick raincoats, or heavy boots. Beauty shines all around us, just waiting to be admired. Notice how delicate flowers dress up your neighborhood. They always look a little bit different, depending on the season, length of the shadows, and time of day.

side or the rare sighting of America’s symbol of freedom, the bald eagle, flying above, making us feel more alive. Breathe in the fragrant sagebrush or salty ocean air. Hold hands with your beloved as you watch the waves dance across sandy shores. Feel the wind brush your hair. It’s amazing how a vibrant pink and purple sunset can release the cobwebs from your mind. Have you noticed that a walk in the woods lightens your mood? It’s the power of the natural world that heals. Like a small child or pet, it teaches you to simply be here now. Observing beauty helps quiet an overactive mind. Just remember to look. Put away your phones. Cherish the wind, flowers, trees, and sunshine. Even the rocks have stories to tell. And all you have to do is open your eyes and ears, watch, and listen. n

Ask the
Pediatrician Colds, Flu, and COVID…Oh, My! By Dr. Tanya Altmann It’s that time of year. Even though you are doing everything right—flu vaccines, hand washing, disinfecting, wearing masks, and keeping a safe distance from others—illnesses may sneak into your home. Should you test for COVID? Call your pediatrician? How long should you keep away from others? Fever Babies under 3 months with a fever must see their pediatrician right away. If an older child has a temp of 100.4 or higher, they must stay home. Before COVID, older kids could often be watched at home as long as drinking, eating, breathing, and acting ok. With the pandemic, most schools will want you to test since fever is a COVID symptom. Runny nose A runny nose alone without other symptoms is more likely to be a common cold virus. That said, kids with any illness symptoms should not be in school or around others right now. Cough If the cough is bad, keep away from others and ask your pediatrician about a COVID/flu test. If the cough isn’t improving after four or five days or there is a fever, wheezing, trouble breathing, or the child looks sick, see your doctor to ensure there isn’t a lung infection that needs specific treatment. Vomiting/diarrhea Kids with vomiting or diarrhea should not be around others. If the child can’t keep fluids down or looks sick, call your pediatrician. Some kids get tummy troubles with COVID, but often, there is also a fever. Either way, COVID handwashing and disinfecting help decrease the spread of most tummy infections, too! Always check with your childcare or school as they may have specific guidelines for when previously sick children can return with or without a COVID test.

Actor Rob Paulsen Gives a Voice to Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness By Kaylie Carafelli If you’ve ever caught an episode of an iconic cartoon—such as Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius—then you are already familiar with the famous voice of Rob Paulsen, the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance’s (HNCA) official spokesperson for 2021. Paulsen serves as the face and voice of HNCA’s Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness ® Program (OHANCA ® ), which celebrates its 23rd year in 2021. Diagnosed with HPV-attributed stage III squamous cell carcinoma in 2016, Paulsen worried his career could be jeopardized as a voice actor confronting throat cancer. He faced aggressive treatments that doctors believed would cure him and keep him alive, but they couldn’t guarantee that his voice would survive. Their job, they said, was to save him, not his career. Paulsen fiercely battled through the intense treatment regimen and is now cancer free— and able to continue his passion in voice work. As a throat cancer survivor, his role as HNCA’s spokesperson is deeply personal. He is passionate about making a difference, saving lives, and offering hope and positivity to those fighting oral, head, and neck cancer. In addition to partnering with HNCA for its awareness campaign, Paulsen recently released his memoir, Voice Lessons, which chronicles his career and cancer battle and how his many famous voices have inspired him and those around him to find joy in every day. Voice Lessons is available on Amazon. For more information, visit headandneck.org. n

Ask the
Pharmacist Q A
I have prescription insurance, but I still pay so much for my medications. Why is this and why does the price seem to change every time I get a refill?
Prescription insurance has become increasingly complex. It used to be that you had two copays: one for brand and another for generic. Now, the plans may have up to five
tiers! The lowest is preferred generics, and then comes the non-preferred generics, preferred brands, non-preferred brands, and finally, the most expensive, “specialty” drugs. Often times, the higher-tiered copays are percentage based. Therefore, whenever the manufacturer raises the cost of the medication, your copay increases. Many plans also charge you the difference between the generic and the brand name if you choose the brand-name drug when a generic is available. Adding to the complexity, many medications require a prior authorization from your insurance company before they are covered. This means your doctor needs to contact your insurance to explain why the medication is necessary compared to other medications preferred by your insurance company. Additionally, many insurance plans no longer cover refills at retail pharmacies. They require patients to use mail-order facilities unless they opt out. They may also charge a higher copay for using a retail pharmacy. Finally, many plans charge patients higher deductibles. Prescription deductibles are often separate from medical deductibles. Some deductibles may start over mid-year, further increasing patients’ out-of-pocket expenses. Medicare prescription plans are even more confusing. Copays can vary by pharmacy as well. You may have a lower copay at a “preferred” pharmacy. “Preferred” doesn’t mean better; it simply means the pharmacy is being reim-

Motor4Toys
Toy Drop Off By Dustin Troyan Photography by Steve Geldman The 17th Annual Motor4Toys Charity Toy Drive was a huge success. The car community and the community at large supported this great event and holiday tradition with the goal of helping children in need all over California. People from around Southern California showed up with cars packed with toys to donate to underprivileged children. It was truly an incredible morning. Presented by and hosted at Porsche Woodland Hills, Motor4Toys is one of the largest automotive charity events in California. Just about every car club imaginable supported the “Toy Drop Off event, from Porsches and Lamborghinis to classics, imports, hot rods, 4x4s, and everything in between. It was a wonderful morning and thousands of children will now be receiving a gift this holiday season! Over the last 17 years, Motor4Toys has collected well over $6,000,000 in toys that were then distributed to children in need all over the state. A little grassroots movement has turned into one of the largest toy drives in the state. Motor4Toys has continued to grow outside of the car community. Partnering with schools, businesses, clubs, and volunteer organizations, it is the foundation’s goal to include as many people as possible who can assist during the holiday season. Our goal is to grow outside of the car community and to hopefully cover the entire state of California, helping as many kids as possible. With COVID in full bloom and the lockdown happening, Dad couldn’t go to Best Buy to see the Geek Squad when he had computer or phone problems. I spent four days Zooming or FaceTiming with him, walking him through how to reset my mom’s iPhone password. ME: Dad, do you see the grey wheel-looking icon? DAD: (No answer) ME: Dad, what do you see? DAD: (No answer) He was just staring at his screen, so I took a picture of my screen, circled in red what I wanted him to see, numbered the photo #1, and sent it to him. DAD: Wow, how did you do that? Oh, you circled the app for me to click on, but it won’t open it.

I have never been so grateful for my iPhone, Steve Jobs, and Zoom!
ME: Dad, are you clicking on the app or the picture I sent you? As soon as we worked that out, I repeated this process, sending him photos with circles and arrows. Finally, after a few hours each day for four days straight, we got my mom’s password changed. He called one day. His wireless printer had stopped working. Sedona Land of Enchantment

By Lori Berezin Photography by Gayle Barnes
A
n eight-hour drive from Calabasas or short plane flight from L.A., Sedona offers a feast for the senses. Located just two hours from the Grand Canyon to the north and Phoenix to the south, this land of enchantment is a world away from ordinary.
The first things you’ll notice are the majestic, red rock formations and contrasting azure-blue skies. Visit in the spring when purple, red, and yellow wildflowers burst into life, or visit in the fall when leaves turn gold and crimson and temperatures remain mild. Whatever the season, Sedona offers something for everyone. Hikers can explore such renowned areas as Devils Bridge or the awe-inspiring Bell Rock. The West Fork Trail, located along shady, tree-lined Oak Creek Canyon and considered one of the 10 best hikes in the country, provides more than a dozen creek crossings. You’ll also want to experience Sedona’s unique vortexes, believed by many to possess energetic healing powers. Decide for yourself. Vortex sites include Bell Rock, Boynton Canyon, Cathedral Rock, and Airport Mesa. Some also believe the Chapel of the Holy Cross, seamlessly woven into the red rock landscape, is a vortex. Whether shopping at the color ful Mexican-styled Tlaquepaque outdoor village, taking a rollicking jeep tour, hiking amidst the red rocks, enjoying the lingering fragrance of Pinon pines, feasting on authentic southwestern cuisine, or watching a brilliant sunset at the top of Airport Road overlooking the entire town, Sedona never fails to dazzle.n
