A NOTE FROM THE

editor

Hello summer! I am looking forward to spending some pool and beach time with you and per haps an occasional trip. The lazy days of summer are always inviting and the per fect time to plan alfresco dinners with friends and a prosecco cocktail. For unique summer ideas, read our article on Blue Space to lear n about the benefits of relaxing by the ocean and our article on local hidden gem Malibu Safari Wine Hikes, another fun place to visit. We put a lot of thought into this year’s July/August Beauty issue. Our flaws are what make us unique and beautiful in their own way. Beauty is not just what people see on the outside; it comes from within. So, when we talk about beauty, we are not just referring to a pretty face. There are many beautiful people in this world who are ugly on the inside and so it takes away from them. There are also some ordinary people who shine from within who become more beautiful in our eyes. InnerStar Girl has come up with an empowering program for teens to discuss issues they are facing, such as low self-esteem, poor body image, and peer pressure. We

generations with self-confidence and tools to help them navigate their way in life. We celebrate many types of beauty and even asked the guys to chime in again this year with their perspective, which is always interesting. We also talked with many of the local industry beauty leaders and put some of their tips in a section called Hello Beautiful. We have a fun piece on local fashion, which sets out to prove that we don’t all just wear yoga pants. Enjoy the summer, and don’t forget to relax, use sunscreen, and hydrate!

PACIFIC POLO TOUR HOLLYWOOD CUP IV

Welcomed by fresh ocean air, polo enthusiasts crowded at Will Rogers State Park in Pacific Palisades on Sunday, May 20, to be part of the greatly anticipated Hollywood Cup IV—setting in motion the new 2018 polo season. Modern lounges and décor provided by Revelry dressed the scene as guests enjoyed fresh takes on delightful cocktails made with Maestro Dobel tequila. Peroni beer served as a cool refreshment as attendees also savored the authentic Mexican food presented by Los Agaves. Music from the live DJ enhanced the atmosphere as polo players readily entered the field. Fans observed the intensity from the sidelines as teams fought fearlessly for the cup. An award ceremony followed both polo matches, recognizing the champions and runner-ups, with guests taking full advantage of the photo op. The Hollywood Cup has become one of L.A.’s most cherished social events, where distinctive guests, celebrities, and the most discerning audience share their love for polo.

Without fail, her first stop in a new place is always the market. “I realized at a very young age that the market place is where you lear n about the culture,” says Jennifer. “I just knew I loved the environment, and I felt most at home and like myself in those places.” In addition to her role as the owner and president of CCFM, Jennifer has also sat on the board of the Califor nia Department of Food and Agriculture as an advisor on organic far mers markets and serves as the Chair Emeritus of Raw Inspiration, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating people about the importance of eating healthy and eco-sustainability. While Jennifer is not knee deep in organic produce, she loves to travel, host outdoor dinner parties, and spend time with her beautiful children. Her eldest, Brittany, now 27 years old, is a mother herself. She lives in Woodland Hills with her husband and three adorable children, River, 3, and twin 1-year-olds Zeke and Kai. Grandmother Jennifer could not be more proud: “My three grandchildren are helping me with the kids’ section of my Farmers Market Cookbook. They are excellent subjects because they are all a bit finicky!” Jennifer’s 25-year-old daughter Brogan works as a hair stylist in the Calabasas area, and her 20-year-old son Canyon is a musician; both live with Jennifer at her Bell Canyon home. The McColms are extremely family oriented. Every Sunday, they gather at the beloved family farm in Bell Canyon—surrounded by mini goats, chickens, mini sheep, a pig, a horse, a donkey, a mini cow, five dogs, and two birds—to enjoy a true farm-to-table feast. From Brittany’s fresh-roasted vegetables and chicken to Brogan’s mouthwatering heirloom tomato-and-basil bruschetta, cooking healthy does not need to be boring. “We use much of what we grow on the farm in our dinners,” Jennifer proudly recounts. When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle or making the choice to reevaluate your health, Jennifer reveals that daily rituals are everything. “Get some empowering rituals! Do two or three things every day toward a healthy lifestyle.” Jennifer’s daily rituals include drinking three liters of water; eating clean, organic food; getting 15 minutes of sunshine; enjoying good, quality belly laughs; taking a trip to one of her 22 local farmers markets; and importantly, quieting her mind, controlling her mental focus, and asking herself some good, quality questions such as, “How can I make it better?” For more information on California Certified Farmers Markets, visit CCFM.com. n

Bree and her key stylist, Brooke Loften, recently offered their services to a handful of Calabasas Style readers who had the opportunity to preview a carefully curated selection of designer fashions, shoes, handbags, and accessories from Neiman Marcus that are this season’s must-have styles. These fortunate shoppers loved the VIP treatment offered in The Suite, where they could sip champagne while seeing the outfits professionally modeled before the general public sees them in stores. What’s more, Bree made sure that the clothing and shoes were on hand in The Suite in everyone’s designated sizes, which made shopping a breeze! Bree fashioned her encyclopedic knowledge of designer brands and desire to help clients dress to impress into a membership-based business, BREE JACOBY, INC. The stylish entrepreneur uses her impeccable taste to help guests of The Suite find the perfect wardrobe. “You shouldn't have to think about how to dress,” says Bree. “I do the thinking for you, so you can focus on doing what you love.” Those who love finding the perfect pieces to complement their wardrobes will especially appreciate Bree. Naz attended California’s Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising before working as a celebrity stylist. She has since styled a myriad of fashion editorials, ad campaigns, and music videos for celebrities, influencers, and others. Her mantra—“Your style speaks before you do. What is Calabasas Style? By Irene Marshall

When we refer to "Calabasas Style," we are referring to the fashions and style in the area. Recently, a national online magazine called us to ask what the Calabasas style was and if everyone just wore yoga pants. We told them that the style is an eclectic mix and that the women and men around here are individuals and trendsetters themselves. The Calabasas women and men don’t just follow every trend out there; they know how to dress for their own look and style. True, many of the women and men can be seen running around in athleisure wear in the mornings and at carpool, but they actually really work out to look as good as they do. So what is the style of the women and men around here? We turned to some local experts to ask opinions…

"Calabasas fashionistas have great style! Daytime looks are athletically inspired, from workout sportswear with cool tennis shoes and sunglasses to long sun dresses with designer flats for summer. The dinner style vibe is current, trendy, fun, upscale designer couture worn in a casual way." — Julie Waldorf, Celebrity Stylist

"True Calabasas style is all about expressing your unique personality through the stylish things you wear. Calabasas fashion influences everyone from reality TV to the silver screen to the red carpet. Our fashion is diverse and always on trend."

72

Calabasas Style

— Sherry Thomas Blaka, Blush

"The women of Calabasas know that the California lifestyle has no age and all trends can be interpreted to suit their individual needs and look. They choose the right color and fit, and put their best-dressed self forward every day." — Stella Campbell, Sugar

“Calabasas style is a mixture of ease and luxury. The lifestyle lends itself to a suburban yet fashion-forward aesthetic!”

— Jason Salstein, The Kingdom

"I would describe Calabasas style as casual chic. Women may be running errands in their yoga pants, but they mix them with designer slides and a great bag to elevate the look. They have a good eye for fashionable denim to pair with a feminine blouse and beautiful heels." — Sharon Segal, Nina Segal

"Our guys wear their clothes well. Tapered leg pants with a rolled cuff for a casual look with a great linen blazer or a print button-down shirt, slim-fit jeans with no socks and loafers or a fashion sneaker." — Bob Carriere, Carriere Menswear

“The Calabasas style is evolving. It has always been chic, sophisticated, and clean. Now, we see the younger generation in Calabasas, who is influenced by pop culture, affecting the overall look and feel. The Calabasas celebrities sporting high-end 90s Hip Pop streetwear is also having a noticeable effect.” — Naz Meknat, Stylist Westfield Topanga

COTY PROFESSIONAL BEAUTY OPENS NEW NA HEADQUARTERS IN CALABASAS ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Marvin Steindler

Coty, Inc., a global beauty-product company, opened its new North American headquarters for its salon and professional division in Calabasas. The 26-acre site at 4500 Park Grenada officially opened May 24th with a beautiful brunch, tour of the campus, and celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new facility features two separate centers, one for Coty Professional North America’s general offices for marketing, consumer research, and finance along with The Studio Annex, where company ambassadors train salon professionals on its products. A total of 315 employees are based at the campus. Coty selected the Calabasas location in part due to its expansive size, ample natural light, and beautiful environment that offers indoor and outdoor working spaces. Feel GreatAbout Your Neck New Device Tightens Skin By Anna D Guanche MD FAAD Board-Certified Dermatologist Founder, Bella Skin Institutee Nora Ephron’s bestseller titled “I Feel Bad About My Neck And Other Thoughts On Being A Woman” is a witty look at the tribulations and changes of life. Of course, women don’t have a monopoly on changes in the lower face and neck. Everyone at some point notices changes in their jawline and the tone of the skin on their neck. It shows in pictures. It sneaks up with little warning, and all of a sudden, jowls appear. There are many youth-enhancing devices and procedures designed to tighten skin and stave off these changes. I have come across something revolutionary. A newly FDA-approved device that tightens skin with minimal to no downtime and minimal discomfort. To my surprise, it also reduces pigmentation and pore size! FDA approved in January 2018, this radiofrequency microneedling device will become more widely available in the U.S. soon, if not by the time of this writing. The name of the device in the United States is up for debate, but it has been approved in Korea, United Arab Emirates, and other countries for a number of years. I was fortunate enough to be approached by the inventor to produce before and after photos and therefore have first-hand experience with the device here in the U.S.

At Bella Skin Institute, settings and protocols for treatment with this device have been developed. Butterfly pea flower tea

Face Yoga

This tea is known for its beautiful colors and ability to preserve beauty. The blue flower has been studied to show that it helps combat wrinkles and protects skin from premature aging. The tea is full of antioxidants which will stimulate collagen and can rejuvenate the skin.

This is a series of exercises that promise to do for your face what yoga does for your body: relax and tone muscles. There are 43 muscles in the face that need to stay toned to keep a youthful look. We all lose muscle mass as we get older; this is a fun way to try to reverse that.

Slip silk pillowcases help with anti-aging and sleep creases on your face. We spend one third of our lives in bed, and these pillowcases have less pull on the face. They also have less absorption than cotton, so they are less likely to steal your face cream during the night. for more information, visit slipsilkpillowcase.com

While collagen is beneficial to the entire body, it is most noticeably beneficial to the skin. As a person ages, the skin thins and loses elasticity, showing more signs of aging and wrinkles. The good news is that collagen powder has been shown to improve skin texture.

It works as a topical lotion with no added chemicals or preservatives. To use on wrinkles, massage a small amount onto the wrinkled areas nightly. The main benefit is softening and smoothing your skin to improve its texture, gently stimulating the blood supply and collagen production.

Calabasas Style

Yes, we all know this and carry around fancy water bottles, but many of us are still dehydrated. Drink a minimum of eight glasses a day, and to really see results, three liters a day is recommended. By increasing your water intake, you can see improved tone and texture in your face in three to five days. Your skin will look brighter and more radiant from within.

Alcohol dehydrates and depletes the skin of its nutrients, causing a dull appearance. It also dilates small blood vessels and increases blood flow near the skin’s surface, contributing to an aged look. To help with this, always drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages.

When we are stressed, our bodies produce a hormone called cortisol that raises our blood sugar levels. This initiates glycation, a process that damages collagen, leading to increased lines and wrinkles. To help with stress, exercise, take a bath, call a friend, laugh, reduce your caffeine, and learn to say no sometimes.

WHAT MAKES A WOMAN By Irene Marshall

Beautiful?

With this issue being our beauty issue, we sought answers to a question that often becomes complicated for men to answer. Lucky for you, we interviewed a few local men and got insight into what they find most attractive.

“A beautiful woman has a gusto for life. She displays a confident soul and a humble heart. She is driven.” — Greg Monterrosa

“I believe a loving heart is what makes a woman beautiful. The gentleness a woman conveys to others exemplifies the love she feels within herself. Nothing is more sexy or beautiful." — Heath Patton

“To me, a woman’s beauty is a combination of passion, style, humor, and selflessness. The ability to unconditionally love and give to others with no expectations to receive something in return is beautiful.” — Zach Wishengrad

“Self-confidence tops my list. It transcends age and profession and isn’t defined by the opinion of others. A woman comfortable in her own skin is extremely beautiful to me." — Brooks DIngman "A beautiful woman is one who is good company. She allows space for folks to be themselves, is entertaining in her own right, and is empathetic so that one feels cared about." — Mark Hathaway

WHAT MAKES A WOMAN

Beautiful? “Inner beauty and tranquility." — Jon Levine

“When she is gentle yet strong, a great listener, loves to laugh and make others laugh, and brings joy to all around her.” — John Jell

“You’re beautiful when you show elegance and confidence without arrogance. I find good eye contact and a radiant smile combined with intelligence and a kind soul, strong attributes of a beautiful woman." — Shawn Hosseini

"After being together for 18 years, my wife still gets in our car, then leans over to unlock or open the car door for me. That makes her beautiful in my eyes." — Jason Galardi

“The look of a woman on the outside does not define her beauty. On the contrary, a powerful soul and enlightened spirit is an enchanting wonder that lights up the world. This is what makes a woman beautiful.” — Audley Harrison

Collaborating with teenage girls from more than 20 different schools throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the conference, held this past May at the A.C. Led by female leaders and experts in the field, plus an informative teen panel, this empowering event focused on girl power, offering insights into issues confronting young girls during their extremely vulnerable pre-teen and teen years. “Our purpose…was to help widen the lens for young girls and women to acknowledge and celebrate their strengths,” remarked Tiano. “This dynamic platform is more than just building a girl tribe–it’s coming together as girls and women leaders and knowing we are beyond enough.” The inspirational conference offered three unique workshops: Self-awareness (self-worth), Social Awareness (the impact of social media), and Community Support (creating a girl tribe). ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Curtis Dahl On Saturday, May 12, the National Charity League, San Fernando Valley Chapter, held its annual Promenade Tea at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village. It was an afternoon designed to celebrate this mother/ daughter organization that focuses on its three pillars: community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. The theme this year was “Everything Grows with Love, as families came together to recognize the accomplishments of mothers and daughters while awarding the daughters for their exemplary service within our community. The highlights included the 10th grade Modelette program designed to teach young ladies how to stand tall with confidence in a public setting while modeling clothes from Val Surf and Frenzy Boutique. The event also celebrated the 12th grade seniors, who successfully completed the NCL experience, marking the start of the 53rd debutante season.

I can save money if I switch my medication to the generic, however I am concerned it may not be as effective. Are generics as good as the brand names? A generic medicine works in the same way and provides the same clinical benefit as its brand-name version. This standard applies to all FDA-approved

generic medicines. A generic medicine is the same as a brand-name medicine in dosage, safety, effectiveness, strength, stability, and quality, as well as in the way it should be taken and used. FDA requires drug companies to demonstrate that the generic medicine can be effectively substituted and provide the same clinical benefit as the brand-name medicine that it copies. The abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) submitted by drug companies must show the generic medicine is the same as the brand-name version in the following ways: The active ingredient in the generic medicine is the same as in the brand-name drug/innovator drug. The generic medicine has the same strength, use indications, form, and route of administration. The inactive ingredients of the generic medicine are acceptable. The generic medicine is manufactured under the same strict standards as the brand-name medicine. The container in which the medicine will be shipped and sold is appropriate, and the label is the same as the brand-name medicine's label. Generic medicines tend to cost less than their brand-name counterparts because they do not have to repeat animal and clinical studies that were required of the brand-name medicines to demonstrate safety and effectiveness. In addition, multiple applications for generic drugs are often ap-

Ask the

Pediatrician I’m interested in getting my baby’s ears pierced. What do I need to know?

The most important thing is to find a healthcare provider trained in medical piercings. After that, this is what you need to know: Age: Although I do pierce many baby ears, I prefer to wait until a child is old enough to want to get their ears pierced and take care of this themselves. Jewelry: Look for piercing studs made from nickel-free metal or medical-grade plastic to decrease the risk of irritation, infection, and jewelry allergy later in life. Symmetry: When placing dots, measure from the face outward and bottom and top of the ear lobe. Usually center or just below center of the lobe is a good spot, but look to make sure they appear visually symmetric too as most people don’t have identically symmetric earlobes. Removing piercing studs: Piercing-stud posts are a little bit thicker than normal earring posts, and over time, the holes slightly contract, so the ideal time to remove piercing studs is two to six months after piercing. Aftercare: Always wash hands before touching ear lobes. Use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide twice a day for the first month and then after bathing for another month after piercing. When you change earrings, always clean lobes and earrings with rubbing alcohol to prevent infection. Signs that something is wrong: Infections can occur from piercings not done in a sterile environment, dirty hands touching ears, cheap metal, or too tight earring backings. If there is any soreness, redness, swelling, or pus at the site of the piercing, see your doctor right away. With a little knowledge and a great medical ear-piercing provider, your little one can have beautiful earrings to last a lifetime.

Q: Tell us about the “Day to Day” options. How does this flexible option separate you from your competitors? A:

We love giving parents the op-

tion to decide on any given day that “today is a Monarchs Camp Day.” It makes planning easy and helps busy parents in a pinch, and campers avoid camp fatigue. It’s really a lifesaver dur-

ing the summer, and you never lose out on a bought camp day this way.

Q: What is the goal of the Monarchs summer camp? A:

We’re all about inspiring dynam-

Q: What makes Monarchs Gym so special? A: With 14,000 square feet in each location, it’s hard not to be entertained constantly. Our camp is unique in that the curriculum changes frequently enough during the day that campers remember the schedule and yet are constantly onto something else that’s exciting to them. We just keep the good times rolling.

For a unique site away from the tourists, try the Basilica of Saint Clement. Archaeologically speaking, the structure is a threetiered complex of buildings: At street level is the church with a breathtaking byzantine mosaic, and then there are two underground levels, a basilica and an ancient roman house, both discovered and uncovered over time. The Basilica of St. Paul, outside the walls, is stunning and off the beaten path, which means less crowds. The interior of the Basilica of St. Paul is magnificent, with enormous marble columns and beautiful gold mosaics, and is the resting place of Saint Paul.

The Aventador S

By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Dustin Troyan and Lamborghini It was such an incredible day assisting Lamborghini North Los Angeles with The Lamborghini Experience. Cruising around Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains on a stunning spring day was perfect! The 2018 Aventador S is one heck of car. In Corsa Mode, it sounds like a fire-breathing dragon. The gurgling and snap, crackle, pop of the factory exhaust are mind blowing. From the factory, this car grabs you by the symphony of angry fuel and hammering pistons. Offering 730 hp and a top speed of almost 220 mph, this Lamborghini is not for the faint of heart. Additionally, the Aventador S is equipped with a rear steering system that increases the handling capability over previous models. I opted to take the Aventador S Roadster, and it was the perfect day for going topless. The freeway came to a standstill with the kaleidoscope of radical colors and the symphony of supercars. Cameras came out, as well as cell phone videos, honks, waves, and cheers from fellow drivers. We toured the Santa Monica Mountains with the canyons to ourselves. Once on PCH, it was a tour of bulls, and we were the celebrities. At one point, we pulled over north of Zuma Beach to regroup, and about 20 other cars joined us. People were taking pictures and asking us questions and were so amazed by the beautiful Lamborghinis. The only way to understand what these cars can do both mechanically and experientially is to simply drive one. But be forewarned; if you do, you might be buying one. n

Saddle Peak LODGE

By Lori Berezin

Experience Legendary Dining

Hungry carnivores and culinary explorers seeking to appease their exotic appetites should head to Saddle Peak Lodge for their next romantic dinner or Sunday brunch. Located in the stunning foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in Calabasas, Saddle Peak Lodge has been the goto spot for epicureans on the go for more than 100 years. Nestled beneath a legendary rock formation known as Shadow Peak, this renowned watering hole provided a cozy hideaway for cowboys, fishermen, gold miners, and travelers seeking refuge en route to their latest adventure. It was developed into a summer resort called Crater Camp, boasting rustic cabins, fishing camps, and clean mountain air. Eventually discovered by Hollywood’s elite, this out-of-the-way locale became the darling of such megastars as Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, and Errol Flynn. To this day, movie moguls, musicians, actors, and locals can still discover a distinctive dining experience amidst the lodge’s rustic, romantic ambiance. Serving dinner nightly from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and scenic Sunday brunch from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saddle Peak Lodge offers a variety of unique fare focused on wild fish and game, plus gluten-free and vegetarian options. Its log-cabin look is adorned with the trappings of a posh hunting lodge, replete with antler door handles plus a cornucopia of quaint memorabilia. There’s a private patio plus four distinctive rooms that are ideal for weddings and special occasions of all kinds. An additional cozy patio comes alive each night with shimmering lights, providing the perfect setting for any event or romantic dinner beneath the stars. The real stars are former owner Ann Graham Ehringer, who revitalized the restaurant in 1992 before passing the baton to current proprietor Deep Septhi of Bombay Palace and Nirvana in Beverly Hills. Executive Chef Adam Horton’s captivating menu includes elk, emu, bison, water buffalo, and other tasty meat, fish, and vegetarian items. Chevys ! y a D e h t Save

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Tony De Frank and Kamran Nazarian The 36th Annual Classic Chevy Show was a huge success. Over 250 show cars were on display, and a couple of thousand spectators attended. There might not be a more energetic and passionate group of car owners out there. Chevy Club chose Rancho San Antonio Boys Town as their location and as the beneficiary of the show’s proceeds. Rancho San Antonio Boys Town in Chatsworth helps to provide underprivileged youth safe homes and learning environments to help secure their futures. Over the last dozen years, Chevy Club has donated well over $150,000 to the charity. This year the Classic Chevys of So Cal is expected to donate around $20,000 from the proceeds of their show. The club has a strong connection with Rancho and Brother John, who operates Rancho San Antonio, and does its best to raise the bar each year. At the show, there were many different attractions and fundraisers, including a charity raffle, bake auction, silent auction, 350 Chevy Engine raffle courtesy of Rydell Chevrolet, model car show, and contest hosted by Laski Scale and Vendor Midway. There were awards for the top 50 show cars. A huge congratulations to the Chevy Club, sponsors, vendors, and everyone that made it happen, including the amazing team at Rancho. It was about the community supporting each other and making the world better through the passion of cars and people. Everybody won! For more information: classicchevysofsocal.com
