A NOTE FROM THE

editor

"Beauty is the illumination of your soul.”

— John O’Donohue

When I went out today, I enjoyed seeing people, especially their happy faces and mask-free smiles. It feels like an eternity since we’ve been able to see smiles in our daily face-to-face interactions. It almost feels like an unveiling after being hidden away for a long time. So, it’s apropos that this issue focuses on beauty—inner beauty, outer beauty, and everything that makes us feel good. We’re excited to share with you tips and tricks we’ve gathered from some of the top beauty industry professionals in the area. Also in this issue, you’ll find the Ryland family’s story. Morgan and Amber somehow make it all look so easy. They adore being moms and make a great a team! Quarantining was a cinch for their family who was already used to spending plenty of time together. We are thrilled to see more events being planned for the near future and look forward to the opportunity to see you all again. Keep sharing photos and special moments in your life, and let us know if you have a story or idea to share with our readers. Once again, I want to give thanks to the team at Calabasas Style magazine. We were also thrown for a loop with COVID, forcing us to regroup and figure out how to keep moving forward over the past year. Our team stayed relentlessly positive and creative, and I’m always impressed with their professionalism and talent. Enjoy your summer, and stay safe and healthy. We’ll be hanging out with our new puppy, Sedona!

The Casa Pacifica Angels, Casa Pacifica’s volunteer auxiliary group, hosted its May Social and its first gathering since the beginning of the COVID19 pandemic on Wednesday, May 19, at Rancho De Las Palmas in Moorpark. The Social was attended by about 50 members adhering to safety guidelines. Angels President Debbie Simpson gave the Angels annual report, highlighting recent activities sponsored, membership updates, and goals for the year ahead. The new Angels president, Barbara Ito, was introduced and received the Seraphim award, an award given to outstanding Angel members, and the event culminated with a raffle drawing, including a pair of tickets to the Angles Spotlight on Style in November. OAKS CHRISTIAN HOSTS VIRTUAL GALA ____________________________________ ____________________________________ By any standard of measure, the Oaks Christian Virtual Gala, "Together, A Day to Give," was a rousing success, netting over

$740,000

through

sponsorships,

silent and live auction items, and Moment to Give contributions. Like many other nonprofits in the pandemic, Oaks Christian hosted its gala virtually, and the total raised was the second highest in school history. The highest-netting gala was the last in-person with former President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush at the Reagan Presidential Library in 2019. The online event saw lively bidding on items such as a European river cruise, a week-long African safari, an exclusive Dodger packet with Orel Hershiser, a Napa Valley wine tour, villa resorts, and more. Despite being online, registered guests got into the spirit of the event, hosting watch parties at their homes with guests, some complete with catered meals, elegant full sit-down dinners, and outdoor cocktail hours.

COURTYARD PHARMACY OFFERS COMMUNITY VACCINES

Calabasas

Pediatrics

Wellness

Center to conduct a community COVID vaccine drive during the month of April. People were able to schedule appointments for themselves and family members 16+ Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Courtyard Pharmacy in Calabasas. They chose these hours to minimize any disruption to their existing pharmacy patients and to allow the staff to service their patients safely and efficiently. After residents received their first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, they were automatically scheduled for their second dose 21 days after. The vaccines were free of charge through the federal government’s CARES program. Both Greta and Dr. Tanya Altmann, MD, FAAP, and owner of Calabasas Pediatrics Wellness Center, were thrilled to form this partnership to offer free vaccines to the Calabasas community. Meanwhile, they enjoy family dinners at Sol y Luna and Blu Jam Café and sushi date nights at Shibuya. Hudson begins Lockhurst Elementary this autumn. He also belongs to a Taekwondo studio, for the traditional Korean martial art, and will take surfing lessons in the summer. Both boys also recently joined a parkour gym together and hope to be American Ninja Warriors one day. Asher’s not in school yet but loves swimming and riding his bike. “He knows all the planets and loves anything to do space and the solar system,” notes proud mama Amber, adding, “We hope to be very involved with the kids’ school and sports once they start back up. We would also like to volunteer in the community when it’s safe again.” They also look forward to future vacations in the Virgin Islands, where they were married, and Maui, where Amber once lived. 52

Amber spent nearly 15 years in the entertainment industry as both a journalist and producer. She experienced everything from the red carpet at the Oscars to one-onone interviews with A-list celebrities. However, real estate was always her passion. Running her own real estate business affords flexibility and work-life balance, which is important to the family. Morgan continues to raise the boys. She also loves to read, cook, and practice yoga and Pilates. “I even took up crochet this year as a quarantine hobby. So far, all I can make are baby blankets, but I hope to graduate to ugly Christmas sweaters soon.” The Rylands can’t wait for their newest arrival. “We are due this fall,” notes Amber, “and it’s another boy, so these mamas will officially be outnumbered! We’ve always wanted a large family, so we’re very happy and excited.” They also share their nest with a spirited 2-year-old golden retriever named Ocean and a color ful betta fish called SpongeBob.

The McLaren Elva

By Dustin Troyan Photography by McLaren A car with no roof, windscreen, and windows and a price tag of over $1.7 million dollars--it just makes sense, right? The McLaren Elva is one of the latest and rarest offerings from McLaren. With only 249 global examples to be produced and what will be a multi-million-dollar price tag all in, one has to understand that you can so you do and that if you have to ask... well, one may ask what the Elva is about... “The McLaren Elva is a true Ultimate roadster; it exists purely for the pleasure of driving, to deliver an enthralling and immersive experience born from the ultimate connection between the car, the driver, and the elements. The lightest road car we’ve ever built at McLaren Automotive, the Elva is incredibly agile and ferociously fast, its 804bhp twin-turbocharged V8 engine providing breathtaking performance that heightens every sense.” — Andy Palmer, Vehicle Line Director Ultimate Series, McLaren Automotive It is safe to say that McLaren built this car simply because they could. Does it make sense? Sure, it does. If you are one of the lucky 249 owners of this ultra-hypercar, you have a true masterpiece that will appreciate faster than most other investments. If you own one, you are truly in a rarefied category. The Elva is a study of form and function, technology and art. The elements and emotions wrapped up into a McLaren are a vision that only a few will ever appreciate. Some people hang their art on the wall, others drive theirs. Most of us will never see this car in person. On the road, it is already a legend. If you happen to pick one up, give me a call. I would love to see it in person. Well done, McLaren. What is "Calabasas" Style?

By Irene Marshall

Style is a word that can describe a person in the way they carry themselves, their fashion choices, and knowing how to dress for their personal taste. Some people can effortlessly put together a fabulous look, and others seek the expertise of a stylist or stores to help them put it together. Locally, we notice that people look effortlessly chic and put together with hats as a popular summer accessory, and people are simply happy to be out again—showing their fun, casual, and classy vibes.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way to live.” – Gianni Versace

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” – Miuccia Prada

“Style is the only thing you can’t buy. It’s not in a shopping bag,a label, or a price tag. It’s something reflected from our soul to the outside world—an emotion.” – Alber Elbaz

CITY OF CALABASAS CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY

City

of

invited

resi-

dents and their families to celebrate the 25th Annual Arbor Day at the Las Virgenes Creek within the Calabasas Tech Center on Saturday, April 24. The volunteers, including Mayor James Bozajian and members of the Greater Los Angeles Girl Scout Troop 256, spent the morning planting nearly 80 trees to replace those destroyed during the 2018 Woolsey Fire. The event is needed for the city to renew its status as a Tree City USA each year. This was the 22nd year that Calabasas was recognized as a Tree City USA by The Arbor Day Foundation, therefore encouraging residents to partake in the important tradition of Arbor Day. Arbor Day has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when the first official Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872. It is estimated that over one million trees were planted in Nebraska that day.

Whether you live in The Oaks, behind the gates at Lake Sherwood, or in Malibu Colony, effectively no one can prevent you or your neighbors from turning single-family homes into duplexes or triplexes. When I specifically raised the question of gated communities with HOAs, I received the exact same answer from the planning staffs of L.A. County, L.A. City, City of Calabasas, and Ventura County. While they strongly recommend coordination with the governing HOAs, they will issue permits to build ADUs as soon as building-code requirements have been met. HOA approval is NOT a requirement. No matter where you live, if you want a quick primer on ADUs, I strongly recommend visiting LADBS.org/ADU. It provides an informative overview, including “Movable Tiny Houses,” and by clicking on “ADU Approved Standard Plans,” you will be linked to renderings of 31 pre-approved, freestanding ADUs worth taking a peek at. On the other side of the argument, AB68 is bringing the noise, congestion, and parking problems many homeowners in the suburbs fled right back to their doorsteps. Disputes between neighbors increase the closer they live to each other. Neighborhoods like Calabasas Hills do not have the driveway or street parking necessary to accommodate a doubling or tripling of the number of households with cars that ADUs bring with them, and it is becoming increasingly clear that the loss of privacy associated with having rental ADUs can significantly reduce the rental value of the main houses ADUs are added to. Depending on the shape of the lot and where/how the main house is situated, adding an ADU may actually render the main house unrentable and reduce the property’s value. For example, corner lots and

3. When it is a bigger and better pool house built as an ADU for the purpose of reducing lot-line setbacks. Interestingly, in my discussions with planning staffs, a very strong pattern is developing where ADUs for rental purposes are being added to existing rental properties, while ADUs for family and staff are being added to owner-occupied homes. While over 20% of Southern California residential building permits are now being issued for ADUs, the planning staff I talked to at the City of Calabasas is not aware of a single ADU that is being used strictly for rental purposes. Beauty

Inner

By Gayle Barnes

Have you ever admired people and pondered how they achieved such inner beauty? It’s not about outward appearance. It stems from a lifetime of positive habits that make them beautiful souls and genuinely happy. Our world puts a lot of importance on being stereotypically beautiful. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be attractive, but inner beauty will always be so much more crucial to a happy life. Truly beautiful people are selfless. They are always happy to assist others, even when they receive absolutely nothing in return. For them, joy comes from the joy of others, and it takes a truly special soul to think that way. These people want the best for all others, even those who are different from themselves, and they are not judgmental. Truly beautiful people are humble not proud. They are confident, yes, but never arrogant. They acknowledge that they have much to learn and are happy to hear the thoughts and opinions of others. Internal beauty requires bravery. People must have the courage to truly be themselves, to be away from their comfort zones for the greater good, to try new things, and to overcome personal hurdles. These people use positive thinking and hope for the future in order to fight their way to enlightenment and happiness. Positive affirmations work wonders. They make you happier, healthier, and more open-minded, allowing you to reduce stress, anxiety, and criticism sensitivity significantly. And when you feel good, you look good, too—both inside and out. Though it may be cliché to say, what’s inside is truly what counts. n Source: powerofpositivity.com

BEING FIT IS

Beautiful By Lori Berezin

Do you know what’s most essential for beauty? Feeling fit. When

you’re fit, you feel good about yourself. You feel beautiful. Health problems can wreak havoc on your looks. That’s why staying fit and active is important for maintaining your beauty and youthful looks. Here are some tips that can help you feel fit and beautiful: Eat well: Eating well doesn’t mean eating a lot. It means eating a healthy diet full of nutrition. Avoid processed food and saturated and trans fats. They can cause many health problems, such as obesity, heart disease, and hypertension, and they may also rob your skin and hair of their luster. Replace bad fats with good fats. Include more veggies, fruits, and whole grains in your diet. Exercise: If you don’t stay active, eventually it will have negative effects on your body. A sedentary lifestyle is linked to hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Instead, include a regular dose of exercise in your daily life. Choose exercise that you enjoy doing and include cardiovascular and weight training in your routine. Regular exercise doesn’t just improve your health and looks, it also improves your mood. Give up bad habits: Smoking and excessive drinking spoil your health and looks. If you want to stay fit and beautiful, give up these vices. Get that beauty sleep: Sufficient sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy body. Sleep promotes the production of proteins called cytokines which help fight infections, inflammation, and stress. Lack of sleep makes you vulnerable to several health problems, irritates your mood, and may also give you dark circles under your eyes. Too little sleep harms hormonal balance and increases the risk of obesity. n Source: healthmedguru.com

Beauty’s Best Kept Secret is

Water

By Gayle Barnes Need a beauty boost? Start drinking more water. Most of us don’t drink enough. We all know that water is important for our health—but did you know all of the amazing things it could do for your appearance? Drinking 64 ounces of water daily can be the answer to beauty problems such as thinning hair, dull skin, and brittle nails. It Makes Skin Glow: Adequate H20 doesn’t just quench your thirst and keep you hydrated. It also helps your body flush out toxins more efficiently, leaving your skin looking fresh and more radiant as a result. It Makes Nails Stronger: Brittle nails that constantly break and peel can be a sign of dehydration. By sipping on more water on a daily basis, you will promote nail growth and prevent dry, flaky cuticles. It Fights Aging: A gallon a day won’t magically erase fine lines and wrinkles, but by staying hydrated, you can maintain your skin’s natural elasticity and suppleness. It Cures Sunburn: Even those who practice sun safety can fall victim to a nasty sunburn in the scorching summer months. Drinking plenty of water can speed up the healing process. It Clears Acne: Another beautiful part about washing away toxins is that it can prevent acne flare ups and other common skin issues. It Reduces Hair Loss: Your hair is one-quarter water, so when you do not drink adequate fluids, your body conserves water for other vital organs. This can lead to hair loss, thinning, and breakage. n

Face MASKS AT

By Gayle Barnes

Now is the perfect opportunity to work more self-care into your schedule. The stress and anxiety of the past year can affect your

hair and skin, and they could use a little TLC. If you can’t get into your favorite med spa or dermatologist for the royal treatment soon enough, here are a few home remedies that can get you by for a while.

Turmeric Face Mask There are many healing benefits of turmeric—including for your skin if you battle acne, dark circles, eczema, or dry skin—making this the perfect go-to face mask recipe. • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder • ½ teaspoon organic apple cider vinegar • 1 tablespoon of organic, raw, local honey • ½ teaspoon milk or yogurt Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and apply for 20 minutes; wash off with warm water.

Yogurt and Honey Face Mask In recent years, yogurt has become a popular face mask ingredient as it has moisturizing effects on the skin. Additionally, honey is also a skincare secret as it contains many crucial nutrients. • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt • 1 teaspoon honey Combine all ingredients and mix till blended. Apply for 20 minutes then wash off.

Avocado and Yogurt Face Mask Avocado has beneficial amounts of beta carotene, protein, lecithin, fatty acids, and vitamins A, D, and E. Combining it with a few other simple ingredients—including yogurt—makes for a go-to mask—and one that will leave your skin refreshed, soft to the touch, and hydrated. • 1 avocado • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon honey Combine all ingredients and mix till blended. Apply for 20 minutes then wash off. n Source: realsimple.com

Anti-Aging BEAUTY SECRETS

By Irene Marshall

1 Sun Block on your hands

Hands are almost always exposed to harmful UV rays that can lead to wrinkles, sun spots, and even skin cancer. In addition, hands give away your age when they are not protected from the sun. Whatever you put on your face also rub on the backs of your hands.

5 Ginger for your hair

Ginger boosts natural beauty with its anti-fungal, antiseptic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. For over 5,000 years, ginger root has been used in ancient Chinese and ayurvedic folk medicine to heal all kinds of sicknesses, including skin and hair ailments.

A major part of skincare routines should be some type of body exfoliation, especially if your skin isn't looking as radiant as you would like it to. Used a few times a week, it can get rid of dead skin and make way for healthy skin.

6

Bee Venom for collagen

Bee venom found in masks and serums can stimulate collagen production. Clinical trials have found that it increases collagen protein synthesis and promotes the growth of new skin cells. It also speeds up the recovery of damaged skin cells, generating even more skin cells.

7

Vitamin A, the youth enzyme

Applying vitamin A to the skin appears to reduce the wrinkles associated with natural aging and may help to promote the production of skin-building compounds. Vitamin A helps to speed up healing, prevent breakouts, and support the skin's immune system and it promotes natural moisturizing.

Peptides for fewer breakouts

Peptides are amino acids that are the building blocks of certain proteins needed by the skin, like collagen and elastin. Using a serum or moisturizer that contains peptides can lead to firmer, younger-looking skin and maybe even fewer breakouts.

4 Ice Roll your face

The application of a freezing roller boosts circulation, bringing blood to the skin surface and helping to restore radiance and encourage optimum cell function. Plus, ice-rolling can instantly reduce puffiness and redness, much like an ice pack can reduce swelling and bruising.

8 Less is More with makeup

A lot of people think they need makeup to look younger, but you might actually be prematurely aging your skin by trying to cover up those wrinkles. In addition, caked makeup in fine lines and wrinkles makes them more pronounced.

Before starting any new health related treatment or supplement, please consult your doctor.

Photography by Marvin Steindler usband and wife team Dr. Korosh Borhani, D.O., and Cristina Borhani, MSN, NP, dreamed of giving back to their community by providing top-quality aesthetic services. These dynamic Calabasas natives realized that dream in 2018 when they opened Skin Bio in their hometown.

“We combine cosmetic dermatology and functional medicine because we believe attaining good skin and wellness is integral to everyone’s overall health,” says Cristina. “Our philosophy entails using natural-looking facial injections and preventative cosmetic treatments.” Skin Bio offers a range of treatments from Botox ®, fillers, lasers, and CoolSculpting ®

to ultherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), microneedling, intense pulsed light

(IPL) therapy, and more. They also provide therapeutic IV drips to deliver vitamins, medications, and nutrients, plus enhancing facials and peels and medical-grade skincare products specially curated for every skin type. With such an intriguing array of options, it may seem daunting to choose the best treatments for you. Consider the following: Ultherapy, the first FDA-approved device to use sound waves, employs high-intensity ultrasound to lift and tighten loose or sagging skin.

Calabasas Style

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) can be used topically and/or injected during microneedling treatments to soften wrinkles and brighten skin. It can also be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth or into joints to naturally stimulate the healing process. CoolSculpting fat-freezing technology offers a nonsurgical way to reduce pockets of fat in trouble spots such as the abdomen, flanks, or beneath the chin. Intense pulsed light (IPL) photo facials treat a broad spectrum of conditions—from brown spots, redness, and broken capillaries to acne and excessive hair—via intense light pulses. These are just a few of the noninvasive treatments available. Skin Bio Founder Cristina Borhani, who’s also a nurse practitioner, employs more than a decade of experience in medical and cosmetic dermatology to help clients gain a natural, youthful appearance using injectable fillers, neuromodulators, anti-aging lasers, plus a healthy skincare regimen. Skin-enhancing products are also available for purchase from their online store at skinbio.co/shop. Skin

Director

Dr.

Korosh

Borhani, a double board-certified physician in anti-aging, regenerative, and emergency medicine, offers innovative solutions to a myriad of healthcare issues. To help patients decide on their best course of action, the doctor reviews their medical history and performs a physical exam. He can also order a customized blood panel to reveal biomarkers, measurable indicators of the body’s physiological state. Tests measure food

hormones,

inflammation,

heavy metals, vitamin D levels, gut health, and micronutrient deficiency, which can cause anxiety, depression, poor sleep, headaches, and fatigue. The results provide a comprehensive picture of a patient’s current health, which Dr. Borhani uses to create a customized health plan. “Bio functional medicine enables me to offer solutions to various healthcare problems where Western medicine sometimes falls short,” notes Dr. Borhani, who treats patients for such conditions as

fatigue,

hormonal imbalances, and weight-loss resistance. When not attending to their patients’ wellbeing, Cristina and Korosh enjoy yoga and jiu-jitsu, spending time with family and friends, plus being active in the community. Besides parenting two adorable Yorkies, Korosh and Cristina are expecting their first baby this summer, a baby boy due in July. n

Our philosophy entails using natural-looking facial injections and preventative cosmetic treatments.

GROOMING TIPS FOR By Gayle Barnes

Men

Men also care about the health of their skin and

hair, which is why they need a grooming routine.

It’s good to keep it simple so it’s easy to keep up. MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN: Drink plenty of water. Use a face moisturizer and body lotion. PROTECT YOUR FACE WHEN YOU SHAVE: Shaving can cause irritation and in-grown hairs. Use a shav-

ing cream with soothing, anti-oxidant ingredients when you groom your face. If you struggle with redness when you shave, a soothing shave cream will save your skin. Do not use a gel with alcohol. CLEANSE YOUR FACE: Women aren’t the only ones who need to wash and cleanse their faces. Pollution, dust, sweat, and dirt from simple daily activities can clog your pores. At the end of the day, wash your face to clean all that gunk from your skin. Otherwise, it can make you look older than you are. EMBRACE YOUR BROW: Ladies shouldn’t be the only ones grooming their brows. To really enhance facial features, guys should pluck and groom their brows. Keep the unibrows at bay by plucking on your own. To really get a handsome shape, visit a professional for a waxing. KEEP YOUR LIPS SOFT: Here’s a simple one—use lip balm! Lips age drastically and can dry out fast. WHITEN YOUR SMILE: Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you. If you smoke or drink a lot of coffee, talk to your dentist about whitening options. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP: If you’re still seeing bags under your eyes or dark circles from lack of sleep, you can reduce the puffiness by placing cold spoons or chilled raw potato slices under your eyes for around 20 minutes. n Source: vicibeautyschool.com

wasn’t crazy enough, traffic jams began happening at sea as container ships couldn’t dock because the docks were backed up. Also, there weren't enough shore workers to get the containers off the ships and not enough freight trucks to keep up with all the products coming in at the same time. To top it all off, there weren't enough freight truck drivers to drive the trucks to their final destinations. Thousands of full cargo containers made up of perishable goods spoiled because they were not able to get them off the docks! And the last domino to fall...was the return of the cargo ships. Because all the containers were stuck in a traffic jam, they couldn’t head back overseas to pick up the next shipment of precious semiconductors, which is what we’ve been waiting for. What a mess! So, what can we do? I’m hoping that by the time you read this (I’m writing this in early June), everyone’s focus will switch from consumption to summer travel, which will allow companies to catch up a bit. Otherwise, here’s what you can do... For home goods, do not place orders until you know the lead time. Better than having them shipped, you can travel to the many gorgeous rug shops here in Los Angeles and purchase off the floor. Some quick tips Divide your items into one of three piles: keep, donate, or purge. Don’t use fat hangers. Instead, use those thin velvety ones that grip your clothes. Try on everything that you haven’t worn in a while. Our bodies change. Plus, most of us went up and down emotionally and weight-wise during the pandemic, so see what fits. Give away or toss too-tight, pinching shoes. Also, seriously consider whether or not you should keep those fabulous onehour shoes or not. Decide whether an item’s too dated or so timeless it never goes out of style. See if your clothes still mirror the way you feel inside, projecting your sense of style. Shop in your own closet. Look for never-worn clothes that still have their price tags and start wearing them. It’s like hav-

Time to reorganize Once you’ve decided which pieces fit them back into your closet. Decide how you’d like to organize them: work, casual, or formal. Do you prefer them from light to dark? Or do you want to sort them by season? (Do we still have seasons in Southern California?) Organize your closet in a way that makes sense to you. In the end, come to terms with the fact that your closet will never be quite big enough to hold everything you want. Then, have fun transforming your closet and your life. I was

literally learning all day, every day, about the industry. That path made such a huge impact on my life, helping me realize I had the capability to operate my own design studio.” Raquel’s dream came to fruition years later when she opened Studio 9. Creating timeless interiors, from luxurious living rooms, formal and informal dining rooms, and bold entertainment spaces to stunning master suites, unique play areas, and masterful outdoor spaces, the company’s talented designers and architects construct the perfect environment for every family. Raquel also stays up-to-date on design trends, such as mixing metals (brass and rose gold hardware or plumbing fixtures) or combining lacquered painted walls or ceilings with wallpapers, textiles, and themed rooms. The designer also incorporates unique textures and patterns to turn an ordinary room into a showplace. “When a room lacks pizzazz,” notes Raquel, “it is usually because it needs added texture from an area rug, tiles, wallpaper, or other accessories. A beautiful pattern can also add depth and contrast when paired with a complementary color scheme, creating greater visual appeal. When carried throughout the interior, it produces an engaging, eye-catching rhythm.” Whether you choose in-home meetings or online consultations, rest assured Studio 9 will transform your home into a truly functional, livable work of art. n

I tend to get stomachaches more often in the summer after outdoor parties, picnics, and beach days so I’m afraid to enjoy the food. How can I stay

healthy this summer? Salmonella can cause an infection of the digestive system called salmonellosis.People typically develop symptoms between 12 and 72 hours after becom-

ing infected. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain/cramps, diarrhea, fever, and headaches. Salmonellosis symptoms last four to seven days and resolve without treatment for most people. However, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at risk for complications associated with the infection. If you have signs of severe dehydration, seek medical attention right away, including for decreased urine output and dry mouth or tongue. Furthermore, if you have diarrhea more than three days without improvement and a fever higher than 102°F, call your doctor. Salmonella can be spread by food handlers who do not or undercooked foods or from birds and reptiles to humans.

MYC SPRING CLEANING CLOTHING DRIVE The Calabasas Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) hosted a Spring Cleaning Clothing Drive on Saturday, May 15, making it easy for the community to drop off excess clothing and shoes for those in need. Seeing an increase in homelessness during the pandemic, the committee was dedicated to find a way to help. With the community’s generosity, hundreds of bags filled with clothing for men, women, and children were collected and donated to Hope of the Valley, a local rescue mission that strives to reduce poverty, hunger, and homelessness. The Mayor's Youth Council, made up of 20 Calabasas residents ranging in age from 14 to 21, advises the city council on matters of interest to youth, educates their peers on local government, helps peers register to vote, manages relations between city government and youth, holds charity drives, and more. For more information or upcoming events, follow their Instagram: @myccalabasas.

GASPAR INSURANCE HOSTS COMMUNITY CLEAN UP Local residents, business owners, and chamber members joined Tim Gaspar and the Gaspar Insurance Services team to clean up the commercial section of their neighborhood at Woodlake and Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills. They fanned out in the alley and along Ventura Boulevard picking up trash and pulling weeds along the sidewalk and gutter. In addition to Gaspar's team, attendees included L.A. City Councilman Bob Blumenfield, former L.A. Councilman Dennis Zine, and West Valley-Warner Center Chamber CEO Diana Williams. It was a perfect example of how a lot of people giving a little of their day can make a huge difference in cleaning up the community! Gaspar Insurance Services was founded on the principle that serving others is the foundation of strong communities—committing time, resources, and financial support to nonprofit organizations.

Dear Cancer, It's Me. Essay Contest

9th Annual High School Essay Contest winners expressed their cancer experiences through writing. Living with cancer or having a loved one with cancer can be an enormous challenge and these teens express their feelings through writing.

Ava Chase | Alta Vista Independent Study | Grade 12 (2nd Place/Family & Friends)

“…I have decided to use the grief and pain to help me grow. It’s what my dad would have wanted. I developed new habits and I’ve come to accept that sometimes things are not okay and that is okay. I now have a daily gratitude and meditation practice. I journal regularly and read and study all I can. The heavy sadness in my chest has started to lighten. The pain is not debilitating like it was before. I have learned not to take anyone or anything in my life for granted and I express that gratitude and joy to those around me every day…”

Eileen Zhang | Newbury Park High School | Grade 9 (3rd Place/Family & Friends)

“…Before, it had always been my mother who had helped me with everything—from homework to even showers. But now that she wasn’t able to help me, I learned to become a problem solver with my homework, to be more responsible and wash my hands constantly so as to not get her sick, and to take my own showers without anyone else’s help. I learned that being independent does not necessarily mean I am alone; it means having the will and ability to do things on my own and in my own way…”

Jayden Melendez | Villanova Preparatory School | Grade 10 (3rd Place/Personal)

“…Eventually when I got home, things felt as if they were getting better, but I also knew that this was a long cycle. I was in for a ride. Constantly having to get treatment was hard, and I did my best to look strong. You made my family suffer and put them through hell. It’s one thing to mess with me, but when you mess with my family and friends, that’s where I draw the line. Cancer, you took so many things from me: my strength, my hair, my appetite, and even some of my childhood. What you forgot to take was my determination…” 142

Nathan Lev | Granada Hills Charter High School | Grade 12 (1st Place/Personal)

“…On May 8th, 2019, I received strong, healthy marrow cells from a wonderful stranger who became my blood brother, my protector and destroyer of you… Although these last few years have been met with many health and physical challenges from lack of immune system and reactions cause by medicines, I am here, alive, healthy, and best of all, cancer free! Though I will always carry the psychological, emotional, and physical scars you have left me with, I have learned the most important lesson of all–that I am fully aware and appreciative of myself and my life...”

Riley Robert Bolton | Ernest Righetti High School | Grade 12 (1st Place/Family & Friends)

“…I miss my mother every single day. Not having her on my special days and celebrations have been so hard. No Christmas's, no graduations, nothing. It has become a burden on my life, but I know that all will be okay. She will always be in my heart and in my mind. The constant support from family and friends have brought me to where I am today. I know she is still here, maybe not physically, but spiritually. Her soul is connected to mine and nothing will ever take that away from me…”

s

Samantha Kayne | Valley Academy of Arts and Science | Grade 11 (2nd Place/Personal)

“…I learned how to be comfortable in my own body and love myself no matter what. I also learned to not take anything for granted because you never know when it will change. Before my cancer journey fully started, being diagnosed with cancer didn't scare me, it was losing my hair. Once I became bald, I didn't really mind it as much and only wore my wig a few times because I was happy with how I looked. I am now over one year cancer free and thriving in my junior year of high school…”

THIRD NOVEL IN CALABASAS CRIME TRILOGY COMING SOON The perils of a fan-favorite heroine will soon conclude in Gated Prey, the last novel in Calabasas resident and #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg’s Eve Ronin thriller series. Following Lost Hills and Bone Canyon, the Calabasas-set novel follows Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Eve Ronin, the youngest homicide detective at the Lost Hills Station. With her relentless desire to protect the community and a stubborn refusal to back down, Eve risks her and her partner’s lives to pursue a sting operation that takes a violent turn in a guard-gated Calabasas neighborhood. Lee Goldberg may have already published more than 40 novels, but that does not stand in his way of pursuing a variety of additional creative endeavors. He also writes and produces hit TV shows, including Diagnosis Murder, SeaQuest, and Monk, and is the cocreator of the Mystery 101 series by Hallmark Movies. A screenplay adaptation of his 2009 novel, The Walk, was also picked up by Constantin Films recently and may be headed to theaters in the near future. Gated Prey is set to be released in October in hardcover, ebook, paperback, and audio format. The community is invited to meet the author and celebrate his incredible work at a launch party hosted by the Calabasas Public Library that will be held on October 26, 2021. Ford hit the ground running years ago with the Raptor, a hugely successful truck model that reshaped what a truck should be. To many, the Ford Raptor was the ultimate daily driver and off-road vehicle. Demand was so strong for this truck that often, they went for thousands over sticker. The segment Ford created, or at least acknowledged, was left wide open for other manufacturers to try to emulate or surpass. Enter the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. The Ram 1500 TRX is excessive. But hey, we love excessive. Bigger, faster, meaner, more luxurious, a bigger price tag than just about any other truck in its segment—it is a winner! It is the ultimate performance truck. Like any other vehicle that is rare and in demand, if you want one, you are going to have to pay for it and then some. It is worth it. The Ram 1500 TRX boasts 702-horsepower and 650 fl-lps of torque, which gets this beautiful monster from standing to 60 in 4.5 seconds. Some say faster. As Ram understands its segment, the truck offers the same “launch control” as a high-performance sports car. It is a highperformance sports...truck. Luxury and technology were thrown at this truck to make every truck enthusiast want one. From an off-road perspective, they had the right people in their focus groups because the Ram 1500 TRX is ready for the desert, the mountains, or Baja. When the TRX was announced, it was basically sold out. If you wanted to be the cool kid on the block with the ultimate truck, you got your order in early. To say that this truck is incredible is an understatement. I want one! For more information, visit ramtrucks.com. n 160
