A NOTE FROM THE

editor

It seems as if we bypassed winter this year and flew straight into spring. As Californians, we are spoiled by our sunny weather and the ability to enjoy outdoor activities yearround. Though we may be freezing in 60 degree weather, an outdoor heater can always offer a quick fix. We hope March will keep our weather mild so we can appreciate the sunny days of spring and all that it brings. Spring break is right around the corner, and we’ve found the perfect hidden gem—the Sanctuary Camelback Resort and Spa, built into the majestic rocky terrain of Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona, is the ideal getaway. Locally, we have suggested fun spring activities to entertain your family on a day trip—from ziplining on Catalina Island to gondola riding through Naples Island, Long Beach. In this issue, we celebrate quality food and wine with our Bon Appétit and Catering to Your Every Dish special sections. We bring you the best places to dine around town, from the coast to the Valley. From the best steaks to lighter fare like seafood delicacies, there is something to delight every palate. We’d like to introduce you to Greg and Jeannie Abraham who have shaped an ideal family and always make it a point to put family first. A special thank you to Calabasas Country Club for allowing us to shoot our cover on their beautiful golf course. In addition, Jeannie is involved in planning The Event (theeventparty.org), which is the party of the year in Calabasas put on by The Foundation benefitting the Las Virgenes School District. We also want to thank three brave young women who shared with us their stories in hopes of inspiring and empowering others. Though the world may seem daunting at times, we can always help provide our sons and daughters with the armor they need in life by encouraging them to engage in group activities. In doing so, we further enable them to learn the essential social skills necessary to make a difference while enhancing their self-esteem.

PTS FURNITURE

WINTERFEST

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt Once a year, PTS Furniture transforms its store into a magical haven for local artisans who come and celebrate their local business. On February 8, local artisans, including Vogue Candles, Tracy’s Designer Closet, and Jewelry Designs by Kelly came together to share their beautiful creations with their home community. The party was open to the public, and beautiful pieces of furniture were displayed, and guests got a first look at the PTS annual storewide winter sale. Sunland Vintage Winery offered attendees their satisfying wine varietals and live music was provided by DJ Napster as all perused the collections of hand-crafted jewelry, custom clothing, magical candles, tasty food, and more. PTS Furniture Showroom is a premier furniture showroom located in Thousand Oaks. For more information or to see their selection, visit ptsfurniture.com.

AHA LUNCHEON

GO RED FOR WOMEN

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Zac Wasserman On Friday, February 16, members of the Ventura and Los Angeles counties joined together to raise awareness for women’s heart health. The co-chairs of this year’s luncheon were Bernadette Straatsma of Engel & Volkers and Dr. Gregory Fontana of Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center. The morning began with a Circle of Red photo shoot followed by registration, a Heart Expo, and the opening of an auction. Dr. Fontana and Dr. Vishva Dev spoke on “Rebuilding the Heart through Keyholes and Pinholes” and UCLA Health cardiologists shared even more insightful information on preventing heart disease. Antonio Sabato, Jr. was in attendance, lending his support. Once the ballroom doors opened, lunch was served and Mariel Hemingway, Academy Award-nominated actress, author, and keynote speaker, took the stage to speak about women’s heart health. A musical performance from Denise Donatelli was enjoyed by all. To close out the day, Passion Speakers Bruce and Gena Quarantello spoke to the guests. BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF VENTURA COUNTY

Wine Challenge

Photography by Debbie Vaccarello Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County (BBSVC) hosted an evening of wine tasting to benefit their organization at Sherwood Lake Club in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday, January 17. Guests and their friends sipped, nibbled, networked, and entered the “wine challenge” for the possibility to come away with a weekend in a new Mercedes-Benz. The Wine Challenge was a blind-tasting competition. Competitors chose to enter a bottle of chardonnay and/or zinfandel for the chance to win the grand prize in each category—a weekend in a new Mercedes. BBSVC’s mission is to provide all children facing adversity with professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. HIDDEN HILLS

VALENTINE’S MUSICAL

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Zac Wasserman On February 9 and 10, crowds enjoyed sold-out shows as they traveled through time with friends and neighbors, celebrating almost 100 years of song, dance, clothes, hairdos, and happy memories at the Hidden Hills Valentine’s Charity Musical. From Fred Astaire to Michael Jackson, there was something for everyone. Proceeds of the show went to three charitable organizations: Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, an organization focused solely on rescuing abused and neglected animals; Grossman Burn Foundation, whose mission is to promote effective, sustainable partnership solutions for the comprehensive treatment, care, and support of burn survivors and their families; and Round Meadow PFA, an elementary school in Hidden Hills. The cast of Golf Cart Time Machine 2 consisted of many talented local actors, including producer and director David Stanley, who put hundreds of volunteer hours into the show to make it the huge success that it was.

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello An amazing group of Bay Laurel Elementary School parents gathered at the Chernin residence in Calabasas on February 3 for a karaoke fiesta and book event to raise money for their beloved elementary school. The night was filled with tacos, churros, and drinks as guests sang their hearts out, played beer pong, posed for selfies, and socialized by the fire pit while enjoying beautiful lakefront views. Parents did not bat an eye, performing a variety of songs in an awesome karaoke battle to benefit their elementary school. Hosted by the Chernin family, the Mitchell family, the Bernstein family, the Katz family, the Dare family, the Klee family, the Jagtiani family, the Arinsburg family, the Mironer family, the Brenner family, and the Holmes family, the night was a huge success and tons of fun for all!

The 2018 e d a l a c s E c a l l i d Ca

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Cadillac The 2018 Cadillac Escalade is an exercise in luxury. I suppose if you have to sit in traffic, you may as well be comfortable. Really comfortable. For 2018, the Cadillac Escalade offers a balance of performance, luxury, usability, and refinement. Being Cadillac’s flagship SUV, no bolt was left unturned. The power plant is a 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 420 hp and will get you from standing to 60 in just a touch over six seconds. An EPA-rated 14/23 mpg city/highway is obtainable with the seamlessly shifting 10-speed transmission. The Escalade is a true pleasure to drive. For an SUV, it is easy to maneuver and comfortable, and the technology incorporated into the driving experience is first-rate. From wireless phone charging—which may sound silly, but is absolutely wonderful—to a 16-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround-sound audio system, OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot, Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system, and more, the list is long and depends on the model you choose. The 2018 Cadillac is a winner and worth a test drive. You will not be disappointed. A package that could suit any family or business person, Cadillac nailed it. I highly recommend. Stem Cells 58

The Fountain of Youth?

By Anna D Guanche MD FAAD Board-Certified Dermatologist Founder, Bella Skin Institutee Is the fountain of youth near you? So near in fact that it may be inside your own body? What tells your cells to act their age? With cells that have the same nucleus, cell membranes and genetics that they’ve had since birth, is there some way you can get your cells to act younger? Humans have been harnessing nature in their favor for a long time. We call it science. We have harnessed a terrifying lightning bolt and determined how to use it to serve us in a myriad of ways. Electricity can cook a man or just cook a man’s dinner. We have found that a mold that spoils our food can be harnessed to save countless lives from syphilis and other deadly infectious diseases. Thank you, Dr. Alexander Fleming, for discovering the antibacterial effects of Penicillium. Perhaps my favorite is the discovery that a bacterium that causes food poisoning secretes a chemical that inactivates muscles. This is terrifying when you have an active infection from Clostridium botulinum bacteria, but delightful when the protein it releases has been separated carefully and is used to reduce wrinkles. Yes, I’m referring to the game-changing beauty procedure of Botox®. As we observe these marvels of nature, we can be inspired to harness nature in our favor in new and exciting ways. Stem cells are a fascinating area of research and have been studied for many years in the pursuit for disease cures. Stems cells are the human body’s master cells. They have the ability to grow into any one of the body’s more than 200-plus cell types. They are unspecialized cells that are all from the same genetic background or family type. They retain the ability to divide throughout life and give rise to cells that can become highly spe-

Stem-cell treatments can restore and replenish tissue in key areas of concern. The cells must not only be “moved” to the desired location, but they must be activated. They know which cells to divide into and replenish based on cells that are near them. This is known as cellular induction. But again, the transferred cells must be a genetic match and must be intact, healthy, and activated. It turns out that stem-cell potential remains but activity declines. After all, our stem cells

PASADENA SHOWCASE HOUSE OF DESIGN

EMPTY HOUSE PARTY ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello The annual Empty House Party of the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) attracted almost 450 design enthusiasts and patrons of the arts on Friday, January 19. Held at a 1915 Mediterranean-style estate located in Altadena, the event marked the debut of the 54th Pasadena Showcase House of Design. With a light supper provided, guests explored the house and got an insight into what its makeover will entail. PSHA is an all-volunteer nonprofit California corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Founded in 1948 and formerly known as the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, they adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design at their annual benefit in 1965. It is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. The 2018 Pasadena Showcase House of Design, beginning April 22 through May 20, will be their 54th Showcase House. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit pasadenashowcase.org.

8TH ANNUAL

COATS FOR CASA PACIFICA ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Erik Sorensen The 8th Annual Coats for Casa Pacifica charity event on Saturday, January 13 was Casa Pacifica’s most successful event yet, collecting more clothing donations than ever before. All winter, clothing was donated to the crisis-care and residential treatment facility for abused, neglected, or at-risk children in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The clothing drive brought over 30 tons of faux snow to Three Springs Park in Westlake Village, where children and parents alike were invited to play. In addition, the drive featured arts and crafts, a community raffle,

coffee

and smoothies. This year’s clothing drive attracted the attention of the Honda Help Team, which showed up with $2,000 worth of new winter clothes and 14 volunteers for the day. Lydia Gable Realty Group with Compass and Rick Winters of Winters Financial Group, Inc., made this fun-filled day possible, hosting it for the eighth time. Culinary Trails BLAZE NEW

from the Coast to the Valley

By Lori Berezin

Whether you crave fine, al fresco, or casual family-friendly dining with a view of rustic mountains or endless seas, you’ll discover endless options to delight your palate in Calabasas and surrounding communities. From thick prime-aged steaks and fresh, succulent seafood to healthy, sustainable gluten-free and vegetarian fare, you and your family can feast on a variety of delectable dishes seven days a week without repeating a meal. Though you’ll probably yearn to return to some of your most-cherished haunts, sample new eateries and menu items as well on your path to becoming a truly, well-rounded foodie.

Hankering for a juicy mile-high deli sandwich on freshly baked rye, mouth-watering blintzes, or warm potato latkes? Look no further than Brent’s Deli, voted #1 in Zagat’s for years. While a trip to New York’s Coney Island may have to wait, a visit to this friendly, family-owned deli, conveniently located in Westlake Village, is always possible. You’ll find over 650 deli and food options on the menu! They’ll even cater to all your wishes for your next family affair or business luncheon. Check out the daily specials served with soup or salad and Westlake Village Happy Hour for $1 off draft beers, $5 well drinks, and complimentary appetizers.

If you are looking for an unparalleled dining experience, look no further than Mastro’s Ocean Club in Malibu or Mastro’s Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks. Recognized as one of the most extraordinary steak and seafood restaurants in the nation, both locales reward hungry diners with a culinary feast for the senses and great entertainment with contemporary live music in the lounge. From their signature Seafood Tower to the tender Petite Filet and all the delicious dishes in between, Mastro’s serves delectable five-star food to match its award-winning five-star service guaranteed to keep guests returning for more.

As you traverse into Westlake Village, you’ll find whatever you are craving on the enchanting grounds of the Westlake Village Inn. For a new twist on tantalizing old-world cuisine, reward your taste buds with a delightful Italian, Greek, or French-inspired meal at Mediterraneo’s. This charming European-style bistro is the perfect spot for a romantic dinner or family get-together, with such luscious sweet and savory dishes as classic Rigatoni Bolognese and Sweet Lemon Mascarpone Berry Crepes. Roam the Inn’s fragrant 17-acre gardens and lush vineyard. Dine on the outdoor patio and savor the delightful cuisine and relaxing views of their private lake for a unique dining experience.

Looking for a little salsa with your meal? Get the party started at the Westlake Village Inn’s lively upscale eatery, Bogies, with such tasty tapas as Champinones al Ajillo--flavorful mushrooms sautéed with garlic, lemon juice, and spices topped with manchego on crostini--or Costillas Morunos—Moroccan-spiced baby-back ribs. Top it all off with a Sweet Raspberry Mojito or Gin and Ginger and dance the night away. Visit their website for a calendar of live music, guest DJs, and even late-night salsa lessons. If you are looking for a more casual vibe at the Tuscany-inspired Westlake Village Inn, a visit to the Stonehaus is the area’s most popular meeting place. From wine tastings to musical happy hours and fresh, seasonal dishes, there’s always something to smile about at Stonehaus. Relax with friends over a glass of private-label wine, craft beers, or cordials. Better yet, join the Wine Club and experience the best vintages from their onsite vineyard. Pair their amazing Moliterno black truffle cheese and prosciutto di parma or delicate thin-crust pizzas fresh from the outdoor oven with a flight of wine or beer and let your taste buds soar. If you want to enjoy the actual lake in Westlake Village, there is no better place to visit than Zin Bistro Americana. Named for the American Zinfandel grape, this restaurant combines traditional and new American cuisine in their mouthwatering, multi-cultural menu. Engage all your senses watching the sunset over the lake while dining on rich Maine lobster chowder, Zinfindel-braised short ribs, or blackened Chilean sea bass. End the meal with some decadent Death-by-Chocolate, crème brulee, New York-style cheesecake, or pecan pie as you toast another per fectly wonder-

ful meal. There’s even a live band to help you dance the calories away. Dining in Agoura Hills has been significantly enhanced since the opening of Café Bizou. For years, this restaurant in Sherman Oaks has delighted Francophiles with a passion for French food and wine, and locals are thrilled to have a sister restaurant in the Agoura Hills community. This tasty boîte offers such enticing fare as moules linguine pasta, over flowing with black mussels in a sublime white wine cream. Their lobster, sea-scallops-and-shrimp pasta, escargot, and French onion soup are also très bien. You’ll find elegantly served dishes without paying lofty prices and high corkage fees. Reservations are preferred but walk-ins are always welcome. Another great dining destination in Agoura Hills, with its authentic Indian cuisine, is Lal Mirch. The name itself means red chili, just one of the many spices they import directly from India. These spices are so good for you. From pungent cholesterol-reducing garlic to skin-enhancing turmeric and immune-building fenugreek, it’s hard to believe they taste great, too. From Tandoori (clay oven) entrées to spicy curry dishes and traditional favorites, including creamy shrimp Tikka Masala, flavor ful Mulligatawany soup, vegetable samosas and tangy fruit chutneys, the Indian delicacies will surprise your palate and warm your soul. Moving on to Calabasas, you’ll find a number of great restaurants sure to please. La Paz Chef and Owner Oscar Iturralde has been serving Yucatán-style seafood and authentic Mexican dishes, plus over 140 varieties of top-shelf continued on page100

Tequila made with 100% blue agave, since 1989. Favorites include fried whole fish lightly steam-grilled in garlic sauce, succulent Boullabaise Caldo de Siete Mares (soup of the seven seas), plus the ever-popular all-you-can-eat buffet on Fridays, Sunday afternoons, and during Happy Hour. Come for the food and be enchanted by the Mariachi band, champagne, and margaritas during Sunday brunch. Be sure to taste Oscar’s grandmother’s flan, made from her own secret recipe. When you’re in the mood for some authentic Tuscan dining, look no further than Rosti Tuscan Kitchen in Calabasas. Their traditional handmade woodfired pizzas are considered the best in the area. The popular Brick Pressed Chicken, marinated in fresh Tuscan herbs and grilled under a traditional Italian Mattone brick, transports taste buds straight to Italy. They also serve up gluten-free items and vegan rigatoni, homemade soups and a great array of fresh and tasty salads. Bring a taste of Tuscany to your next party, business meeting or family gathering with their convenient catering options. Whether you arrive at Pedalers Fork by bike, car, or Uber, you’re sure to leave happy. This locally sourced bar, restaurant, and bike shop offers a woodsy, friendly ambiance and plenty of scrumptious menu items to satisfy any foodie. Start with their heavenly 6 Devils on Horseback, starring Medjool dates, blue cheese, and applewood bacon or artichoke and kale hummus. Move on to their signature Pedalers Chop or sampler platter overflowing with brisket, pulled pork, spare ribs, and chicken sizzling from the smoker. This comfy farm-totable spot will keep any food lover’s heart pumping.

Whatever your favorite number, you’re sure to be charmed by the Six Chow House in Calabasas. Inspired by an eclectic 1920s prohibition-era group of six bohemian Northern California artists known as the Society of Six who turned their home into a “Chow House,” this popular gastropub offers sustainable cuisine plus live entertainment daily. Try their unique flatbreads, zesty Cubano sandwich, or sweet and savory Knife ‘n’ Fork Chicken ‘n’ Waffles. And their crispy Brussels sprouts and buffalo-style cauliflower simply make life worth living. If you need a cool venue for a private event, you can also rent out their great Bourbon Room. Another favorite dining venue is Toscanova located in the Calabasas Commons. Toscanova takes a modern approach to classic Italian fare. One taste of their delicately seared Branzino Mediterranea, rustic flatbreads with crispy Italian bacon, baby black kale, mozzarella, goat cheese, and roasted tomatoes, or zesty Pollo Alla Parmigiana will leave a lasting impression that keeps you coming back for more. For dessert, try their rich Tortino Al’ Cioccolato, refreshing Frutti Di Bosco, or Torta Di Mele warm caramelized apple tart with cold vanilla ice cream. They’ll surely transport your taste buds to foodie heaven. You’ll also find Toscanova in Century City. Woodland Hills also offers an amazing number of great dining options. One of the best fine-dining venues is Morton’s The Steakhouse. Located in Woodland Hill’s popular Warner Center, Morton’s The Steakhouse offers steak lovers and those who love them the perfect excuse for a night or day on the town. Enjoy juicy prime-aged beef, succulent seafood, traditional cocktails, and decadent desserts. They even serve special gluten-free and soy-sensitive menu items, plus a range of continued on page102

specialties that will make your inner Paleo-lover smile. You can also arrange for private dining with an option of silver, gold, platinum, and diamond menus to make your next client meeting or elegant family celebration truly sparkle. Since the opening of Village at Westfield Topanga, locals have discovered an endless array of great restaurants and eateries. One of the most popular is Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern (JFAT), which also has locations in Santa Monica, Brea, Dana Point, and San Diego. Here you will find the best comfort-food for foodies in a place where you can stop by for a casual bite or celebrate with a large group at the bustling bar and patio. JFAT offers a new twist on regional American classics and serves up gourmet burgers, sandwiches, salads, seafood, steaks, and signature specialties. Make sure to leave room for dessert. Jimmy’s “Old School” warm chocolate cookies and outrageous Bananageddon are out of this world. The Village also has one of the best fine-dining establishments in the area now that Larsen’s Steakhouse burst onto the scene. Serving perfectly aged steaks and succulent seafood that is flown in daily, plus a host of delectable sides ranging from panko-crusted onion rings and lobster mashed potatoes, Larsen’s Steakhouse makes each dinner fit for a king or queen. Chef Logan will even cater your royal affair to make any occasion feel like a holiday. Enjoy a shot of Cinnamon Penicillin, with Highland Park 12 Scotch, lemon juice, honey and ginger syrup, and cinnamon, or a Real Apple Martini with your filet mignon sushi or chilled Seafood Tower for a day or night to remember. to earn top honors for the best BBQ in town. In an era when restaurants come and go, this family-run business has kept bellies full since 1970! Everyone comes here for their succulent ribs, apple-smoked pulled pork, and finger-lickin’ BBQ chicken with a delightful assortment of home-style sides, including creamy mac and cheese and homemade garlic mashed potatoes. They also offer a selection of wine and ice-cold beer on draft served in a down-home atmosphere with a cozy fireside interior and outdoor patio dining, perfect for good times with family and friends. Catering is available with free delivery within three miles. It’s well worth a trip a little further down Ventura Boulevard to experience the great food and ambiance at Davenport’s Restaurant in Encino. This new restaurant is a welcome addition to the Valley and transports diners far from the madding crowd with its serene ambiance and delectable specialties. Start with their signature lobster bites, crab beignets, or smoked trout spread and divine delicacies from their raw bar. Sample the roasted beet and burrata salad or vegan vegetable stew before diving into a main course of piquant cioppino overflowing with seafood, meaty Texas beef ribs, or apple-glazed tomahawk pork chops. The three words that best describe this restaurant are “innovation, creativity, and heart,” which are sure to be validated when you dine here. We hope you will enjoy discovering new restaurants that appeal to your taste of adventure. Each of the dining locales mentioned more than deserve your business and will leave you in awe. Make sure to keep our restaurant directory handy for each restaurant’s address, phone number, and website. Bon appétit from us at Calabasas Style! n

I have heard about the health benefits of essential oils. Do they really work? Essential oils are naturally occurring, powerful, aromatic compounds that hold incredible benefits for our health and well-being. When you open a bottle of essential oil,

you instantly notice that the aroma is potent. Unique properties make essential oils ideal for aromatherapy to help you maintain a healthy mind and body. The type of volatile aromatic compounds present in an essential oil determines both the oil’s aroma and the benefits it offers. Essential oil enthusiasts also know the power of combining essential oils. These blends can provide the original benefits of the different oils while also creating synergistic partnerships between the oils, offering even more benefits. The purity of an essential oil is its most important characteristic. If an essential oil isn’t pure, you run the risk of putting germs, heavy

EMPOWERING

Young Women • As mothers, we worry about our daughters more these days, about how they will navigate their way in life. We want to protect them, but we cannot always be with them. We want to empower them to be strong and confident, to learn the life skills they need to guide themselves in any situation they come across. Involving girls in a variety of activities can help them learn essential social skills necessary for speaking up and making a difference while enhancing self-esteem. As role models, we can teach our girls to have each other’s backs and to support one another. There is so much cattiness that goes on in schools that it is important for girls to have smaller group activities or organizations to belong to where they can let their guard down and flourish—a place where they can appreciate the other girls around them and share what they have learned. Here are three young women embracing life and taking steps to be strong. They are choosing paths through sports, volunteer work, and they support other young women by sharing their stories.

GIVING BACK THROUGH THE GIRL SCOUTS

KIRSTEN

Johnson

By Lori Berezin

Kirsten Johnson proves firsthand that you’re never too young to do great things. For the past nine years, Kirsten, now 16, has been a member of Girl Scout Troop 2626 in Calabasas and is currently an Ambassador Girl Scout. Partnering with Casa Pacifica, a residential treatment center helping abused and neglected children and adolescents cope with emotional, social, behavioral, and mental health challenges, Kirsten created “Peace Poles” for the Casa Pacifica Camarillo campus. She inspired the kids to express themselves by painting ceramic tiles with meaningful symbols, words, and pictures. Her team decorated more than 200 tiles, which were then placed onto light poles in the campus courtyard. Kirsten’s selfless work and leadership skills put her in the running for the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award. Those who

pursue this highly regarded national award must show outstanding leadership skills, creativity, value, and efforts to make the world a better place. Earning the Gold Award requires at least 80 hours in planning and implementing a challenging, large-scale project that is innovative, engages others, and has a lasting impact on its targeted community. Nationwide, only 6% of all eligible Girl Scouts achieve the Gold Award. Approximately one million Girl Scouts have earned the Gold Award or its equivalent since 1916. Kirsten is proud to participate in this great organization that has brought her many new friendships while enabling her to spread the positive message of giving back. This inspirational teen hopes to continue making a positive impact on her community through her involvement with the Girl Scouts. n

LEARNING LIFE LESSONS FROM SPORTS

MADISON

Saltz

By Lori Berezin Photography by Raymond Joyce Photography/RJP Sports Photography

There are so many reasons kids should participate in sports, from building self-esteem and leadership abilities to developing healthy lifestyles and simply having fun. Whether you win or lose, players can always practice good sportsmanship. Ten-year-old Madison Saltz has been learning these important lessons and more while participating in team sports for the past five years. Her dedication to improving her skills in softball and beyond serves as an inspiration to others. Madison’s own role models include her coaches, especially her dad (who is currently coaching her softball team, the StormTroopers at the West Valley Girls Softball league); her teachers, Mrs. Angel and Mrs. Kirkhope; and Temple youth group advisor Sarah Kayne. Madison proudly recalls how her team, the Blue Diamonds, won the championship game last year when she pitched seven innings against the fastest pitcher in

152

Calabasas Style

the league. She’s gained a lot from softball, including good friends, added strength, and confidence. This “Little Engine that Could,” as Madison’s mom lovingly refers to her, brings an endlessly positive attitude to everything she does. This includes attending school plus ongoing pitching lessons and softball practice; reading favorite novels, such as Percy Jackson and Harry Potter; horseback riding; and doing archery. Softball has taught Madison that however many times you strike out, you will eventually hit a home run. Never give up! Teamwork is also crucial. Madison loves to help younger players grow and appreciates how her team cheers her on and, most importantly, how everyone works together towards a common goal. Future plans include learning how to throw rise and drop balls, memorizing the periodic table for her science class, and eventually getting a college softball scholarship. n

By Elena Richards Photography by Marvin Steindler and Curtis Dahl

Synergy Academics provides a comprehensive array of services within four main divisions: One-on-One Subject Tutoring, Standardized Test Preparation for various exams, Study Center, and College Admissions Process. As a supplement to their academic services, Synergy also provides financial aid assistance. We met with Jennifer Lopata and asked her some questions about the different services they offer and why they have been so successful helping students.

What strategies does Synergy use to help children/teenagers in school? With the diversity of our services and broad knowledge base of our tutors, Synergy is able to help students with most difficulties they may experience, spanning from basic phonics to advanced

Our positive, supportive environment and state-of-the-art facilities provide a learning environment encouraging students to thrive. Through our Study Center, we also teach organization and time-management skills that not only improve executive functioning, but also improve self-esteem and confidence.

How does your test-prep work? Most of our students begin with our unique diagnostic assessment that determines if they are better suited for the SAT or ACT. Next, we customize a test-preparation schedule throughout each week, leading up to the planned targeted

of the Reform Jewish Movement. Or Ami students focused on healthcare, LGBTQ rights, immigration, reproductive rights, campaign finance, and issues related to Israel. On Sunday, with the support of chaperones and the mentorship of the RAC staff, students picked a specific topic and wrote their own lobbying speeches to deliver on Capitol Hill on Monday. On Monday morning, the students boarded buses to Capitol Hill. Upon arriving at the offices of California senators and representatives, Or Ami students introduced themselves with confidence. Without wasting any time, they then addressed current legislation by name and number, expressed their opinions based on Jewish and American values, and related the issues to their own lives with personal stories. They respectfully demanded that their shared values of rachamim (compassion), b’tzelem Elohim (the intrinsic worth of each person), and tzedek (justice for all) prevail. The L’Taken Seminar also includes visits to the National Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Smithsonian National Mall, celebrating Havdallah at the Jefferson Memorial, and socializing with other Reform Jews from across the United States. As the nonpartisan center of Jewish social justice and legislative activity in Washington, D.C., the RAC has been educating and mobilizing the Reform Jewish community on legislative and social concerns for over 50 years. The RAC is the Washington office of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). A proud member of the URJ, Congregation Or Ami (“Light of My People”) celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. As a traditional Reform Jewish congregation for the west San Fernando Valley, Conejo Valley, and surrounding communities, Or Ami is a sanctuary of kindness, a safe Jewish community offering a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment. The Or Ami Center for Tikkun Olam (Social Action) pursues social action projects throughout the year, providing education about Jewish values and social justice activism to kindergarten through high school students. With the help of generous donations from congregants and foundations, Or Ami can continue to see its vision (“People Matter!”) flourish while shaping consecutive generations of Jews in a sanctuary of kindness. n

HARMONY IN

Basketball

By Anne Star Photography by Zac Wasserman Sometimes fate can harmoniously bring people together. Take the case of three Oaks Christian High School basketball players for example: Jericho Parker of Calabasas, Max Harris of Hidden Hills, and Talin Lewis of Westlake Village. The threesome met at the age of 11 when they began playing on Aim High, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball team, which was coached at the time by Vince Smith, the brother of NBA player Kenny “The Jet” Smith. Jericho, Max, and Talin quickly became friends as they bonded with the team, traveling to tournaments in California and Nevada and making their mark with spectacular three-pointers, aggressive defense, and impressive rebounds, utilizing their personal heights up to 6’5”. They were a force to be reckoned with on the court already then. Although at the time one of the boys was attending a different middle school, coincidentally, they each enrolled at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village and not only found themselves as teammates again, but realized they had something else noteworthy in common: their fathers. Jericho’s father, Ray Parker Jr., is a world-class musician, known for writing and performing music such as “Ghostbusters,” “A Woman Needs Love,” “The Other Woman,” and other chart-topping hits. Ray has also written music and produced for Chaka Khan, Boz Skaggs, and New Edition, among others.

162

Calabasas Style

Similarly, Max and Talin’s fathers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, are also very successful songwriters and producers and have written and produced music for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince, The Time, and many more famous artists. Combined, they have more Billboard number-one hits than any other songwriting and production team in history and were recently inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. All three fathers are Grammy Award-winning songwriters and producers and have influenced their sons.

Jericho and Max plan to follow in their dads’ m e l o d i c f o o t s t e p s . J e r i c h o , a s e n i o r, i s e a g e r t o m a j o r i n m u s i c in college and has successfully written and sung several of his own songs. He hopes to play college basketball as well. Max, a junior, is also musically talented and is excited to study music production, multi-media studies, and global brand building in college. Max is already marketing and managing new artists with the help of his famous dad. Talin, an exemplary honor student and senior, is a strong double-sport athlete in basketball and track and field. He would like to branch out with a major in biology while competing in college sports. Was it a coincidence or destiny for these three talented basketball players to be teammates and to have such har monious families? Either way, Jericho, Talin, and Max have bright futures ahead and are sure to stay in tune both on and off the court. n

Pediatrician Making Family Meals Work for Busy Parents

We all have our own type of modern family—single-parent households, kids with hectic schedules, and more. Trying to balance school, jobs, activities, and homework often means family nutrition suffers. Busy or not, the truth is that family meals eaten together are healthy. Studies show families that eat dinner together have better communication, less obesity, and fewer picky eaters. Here are five ways to make family meals easier: Try different times—it doesn’t have to be dinner Crazy work schedules and late kid activities can make weeknight dinners hard. Try Saturday breakfasts or after-school snacks or grill outside on Sundays. Use grocery store timesavers Pre-prepped products like rotisserie chicken, steam-in-bag veggies, and bagged salad are fantastic timesavers. They are nutritious and can help get a quick meal on the table. Eat meals media-free The dining table should be a media-free zone. Try a self-serve bar Try a taco, salad, pizza, burger, or breakfast bar. It’s a great way to expose children to a variety of healthy items. Love your leftovers Cook two or three times a week, and try a smorgasbord night of all the leftovers. Your kids will love the choices, and you’ll love that you don’t have to cook every night! Casa

Pacifica hosted its annual employee appreciation town hall in the gymnasium at their main Camarillo campus.

Lunch

was served, a raffle was held, and the Employee of the Year award was presented. The grand finale of the town hall was the much-anticipated meeting between Casa Pacifica CEO Dr. Steven Elson and the dunk tank. Dr. Elson’s date with the dunk tank is the result of Casa Pacifica’s

campaign in November which raised more than $15,000 for the nonprofit to support their vital programs and services— bringing hope and help to local children and their families. Chosen employees and community donors who participated in the Giving Tuesday Challenge had the honor of throwing the balls that sent Dr. Elson into the water. Longtime Casa Pacifica supporter and owner of Ventura Rental Party Center, Heidi Whitcomb, donated the dunk tank for the festivities. For more information, visit casaspacifica.org.

CAMARADERIE AND CARS COME TOGETHER AT THE

CLASSIC CHEVYS OF SOCAL CLUB

176

Calabasas Style

By Lori Berezin Photography Zac Wasserman To many, cars represent the freedom of the open road, a means to an end. But for automobile aficionados, the car itself is the prize, worthy of endless praise and admiration. At the Classic Chevys of Southern California (CCSC) club, one model in particular stands out from all the rest. In 1975, founder Steve Kershuk invited enthusiasts and owners of ’55, ’56, and ’57 Chevys to form a car club. Their first meeting was held on January 14, 1976, and the rest is SoCal automotive history. Members include car lovers from all over the region, including West Hills, Chatsworth, Oak Park, Van Nuys, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and other Southern California communities. The CCSC advisory board is comprised of President Jed Friedman; Vice President Al Donath; Treasurer Gerry Wasson; Secretary Barb Frey, lending her female perspective; and Sargent at Arms Bob Forrest. They inform members about upcoming events and help the group give back to the community. For the past 35 years, for instance, they’ve held a car show every year to benefit the Rancho San Antonio Boys Town facility in Chatsworth. They hold other charity events as well, including a fundraising day at the California Pizza Kitchen in the Westfield Topanga Mall. Member Dale Conover expressed his admiration for his car in a short story written from the Chevy’s own perspective. It begins, “My previous owner had lost interest in me. All he saw was an ugly, old car in need of a lot of mechanical work, paint, and upholstery. Dale and his family saw me as a potential show car. The Conovers knew the transformation from ugly duckling to the car I am today would be a long-term family project, but they wanted me anyway. The decision was made, and for $600, I was sold and moved to my new home in Canoga Park, California.” The tale goes on to describe the car’s renovation experience, perfectly personifying Conover’s passion for his ’55 Chevy. Most of the club’s members have an interesting story to tell. Many members, such as Gerry Wasson and Mark Kleckner, owned their first Chevy back in high school. They still enjoy tinkering with their prized possessions. Each month, CCSC puts out a newsletter created by Secretary Barb Frey, Edie Sullivan, and President Jed Friedman to inform members of upcoming events and issues of importance. There are also club meetings held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Rancho San Antonio in Chatsworth. The club has put on 35 car shows, and their next one will be May 6. Those interested in sharing the camaraderie can contact the club via their website at classicchevysofsocal.com. n

w o Sh r e st d a o R l a n tio a N d n ra G e Th

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Tommy Huth The 2018 Grand National Roadster Show was another huge success. Considered the “Grand Daddy” of car shows, this event attracts collectors, car builders, and enthusiasts from all over the world. The Grand National is in its 69th year and is the world’s largest and longest-running indoor car show. Featured at the Pomona Fairplex, tens of thousands of spectators made the trek to the “big show,” which started in 1949 and has morphed into one of the most iconic car shows in the world. Winning a trophy at the Grand National is considered one of the highest honors. It is not uncommon to have car builds that are in the multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars up to and well over a million dollars. At this level, the cars are art; they just happen to start and run. The Grand National has one award that everybody wants: America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Award, also known as the AMBR Award. Judging is stiff and precise. There is always a lot of emotion around the award and the car that wins. That car is an instant celebrity, and some would go as far to say that it adds tens of thousands of dollars to the value of the car. This year’s winner of the AMBR Award is Dave Martin and his 1931 Ford Roadster (not pictured). This Roadster recently ran the Silver State Classic in bare metal. It is truly rare for a car to run a race and then take the AMBR Award, but Mr. Martin did indeed achieve his goal. For more information on the winner and the show, please visit rodshows.com. n
