A

t Calabasas Style, we believe that dining out is an unparalleled experience as it functions to bring people together from all walks of life. We devoted a great deal of this issue to our favorite eateries around town -- the ones that satisfy all of our cravings. We’ve done our research and, of course, indulged in a fair share of taste-testing to cover all our bases, from best burgers to fine dining and all happy hours in between. We were delighted to learn more about Aldabella Custom Crush Winery and Storage since it offers the perfect atmosphere to sit down, relax and explore your wine palate. Their cozy Tuscan tasting room gives you the ideal opportunity to discover wonderful wines from local growers. If you want to add a dose of nightlife or a staycation to your wine tasting experience, Westlake Village Inn is an idyllic location to do so. The “Village” not only houses European bistro at Mediterraneo, but spruces up the night with live concerts at Bogie’s Bar weekly. If you are in need of a great workout after a weekend of indulgence, be sure check out Fit Core in Calabasas. However, we must warn you -- you will get addicted to their transforming full-body exercise plan. You can also check out some of the local hiking trails featured in this issue that are perfect for an adventurous date or to help you seize the day in this vibrant land that we are lucky to call home. In addition to trying out new restaurants and staying fit, we also love to add creativity to our living spaces and highlight home décor in this issue. We are excited to share some of our must-have décor elements from our local and beloved home décor boutiques.

Rebecca Amis & Jeff King MUSE School

By Beth Cone Kramer Photography By Marvin Steindler

S

ince relocating to Calabasas, Midwest transplants Rebecca Amis and her husband, Jeff King, have embraced Southern California’s outdoor-oriented lifestyle. “I love waking up in the morning surrounded by mountains and the community feel,” shares Rebecca, co-founder of MUSE School in Calabasas with her sister Suzy Amis Cameron. “We love the beauty of Calabasas, the biking and hiking trails, as well as the location not far from the ocean. We also like the quiet and comfort of getting around easily.”

“We don’t have to commute,” Jeff adds. “It’s a three-to-five-minute drive to work. Coming from the Midwest, we love the weather.” The Kansan grew up on a farm in Greensburg, while Rebecca grew up in Oklahoma. Just two years ago, Jeff had relocated to Calabasas from the couple’s Wichita, Kansas, home when he became Head of MUSE. Seven months later, Rebecca and the rest of the family joined Jeff in Southern California. Rebecca spent the first seven years since the school’s opening commuting between Kansas and California.

16

The family currently lives off Lost Hills Road and Agoura Road. Son Derrien King, 20, attends Santa Monica College. The 6’9” basketball player will be attending Washington State University on full scholarship. Maggie Taylor, 18, plans to study interior design and is waiting to hear from colleges in California, Oregon, and Arizona. The Calabasas High senior takes voice lessons regularly. Calabasas High sophomore Harper Taylor enjoys playing basketball with friends. The 16 year old has taken flight lessons in Camarillo and has dreams of attaining his pilot’s license, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, two uncles, cousin and aunt. “I’m really proud of the kids because they’ve done a good job adjusting and adapting,” says Rebecca. “Maggie has done a tremendous job of finding friends who fit her personality. All three kids love the warmth and sunshine. It can be a little tough to transition to a new school. Given the challenge, I’m really proud of what they’ve accomplished.” The active family enjoys skiing and snowboarding in Crested Butte, Colorado, and has taken a cruise along the Mediterranean, which

included a week in Barcelona. They also like to travel back to see family in Oklahoma and Kansas. One of the family’s favorite pastimes is camping, which they wish to continue in California. Jeff is an avid golfer while Rebecca likes to read, write, hike and practice yoga and has been working out with a trainer at the Agoura Hills Recreation Center. The couple enjoys mountain biking. Jeff and Rebecca say they have been known to have movie marathons where they see multiple films in one day. The couple met when Jeff approached Rebecca in a lounge and intrigued her with a story that he was a fisherman, providing seafood to local markets. Rebecca shares, “I believed him and was surprised to find out that he was a psychotherapist!” The two married in 2005 atop Moon Mountain in Dougherty, Oklahoma, on Rebecca’s family property, blending their families. They went on to have what they describe as a “family-moon” in Crested Butte, Colorado, the first of many skiing and snowboarding vacations. Closer to home, the family enjoys Hugo’s Tacos in Woodland Hills and Sundays at the Sagebrush Cantina. What’s next for Rebecca and Jeff? MUSE is set to become the first plant-based school in the world. “Our motto,” says Jeff, “is one meal a day for the planet,” aiming to minimize the carbon footprint. The sustainable school, which has grown to serve students from two year olds to high school-aged kids, grows produce on campus. The school will use the produce they grow in the school lunch program. MUSE is also set to expand internationally through global franchising. Nashville, Manhattan, Seattle, Dallas and North Carolina are just a few of the locations that have expressed interest. Internationally, there has been interest from Austria, the United Kingdom, South Africa and even China. The Calabasas school started as a dream of two sisters who hoped to provide an opportunity to nurture student’s individual passions and gifts while guiding future generations to protect the environment. Just a few years later, the school is poised to make an impact on education on a global level. “Jeff and I are excited about exploring the next chapter of our lives and MUSE. We plan on being here for a long time. The school completely fills us up as far as our passions go. We’re super fortunate to be able to say that,” shares Rebecca. n If you know a great family or individual to profile, please contact us at: stylepublishing@gmail.com.

pasadena EMPTY HOUSE By Sabrina Samedi

Party

It was time for a comeback as the 51st Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design Empty House Party previewed a classic on January 23rd. The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts revisited the eminent Eliot House 22 years after its Showcase debut. The 9,400 squarefoot main residence is an English Tudor-Craftsman design built in 1910 by architect Fernand Parmentier. The annual Empty House Party left the house anything but empty of guests as the event drew in a hefty crowd. Nearly 500 design enthusiasts and patrons of the arts joined forces to support the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. At the party, chaired by Marybeth Rehman-Dittu and Shari Domenghini, guests were treated to a sneak peek of the property before it takes on its dreamlike transformation at the hands of 19 interior designers and seven exterior designers. The home’s makeover will only available for a limited time since the estate will be restored to its original grandeur by Spring 2015.

Menaissance

The Aesthetic

For men who want to look their best By Anna D. Guanche, MD

28

Calabasas Style

T

raditionally, the development of aesthetic procedures was focused on women. In recent years, we have found an increased number of men seeking similar treatments. The most frequent male aesthetic patients have typically been CEOs and actors, but now, we see men from many different professions seeking to look their best. The male patient wants a different approach: simple, effective, low maintenance. In the movies, we see examples of male beauty -- Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum and Henry Cavill -- that set the standard in ways that mirror the female beauties who have graced our screens since the beginning. More men are seeking procedures to match their appearances with the vibrancy they feel inside. This has been encouraged not only by the media, but also with male hormone replacement that has brought many men “back into the game.”

In general, when you ask a man why his mate is attracted to him, he can only shrug and say that he is glad she or he is attracted to him. He has no idea what the exact features are that make him attractive. Leave this to us! We know from pop culture which men’s features are overwhelmingly popular: a V-shaped torso (see Magic Mike); a strong jawline and brow; and angular features that are not too severe -- more like Superman and less like the Hulk! When correction or enhancement is sought, it is a fine balance between desirable features and exaggerated ones. In truth, desirable male facial features are different than the ones of women and must be addressed as such.

Brotox The popularity of injectables in men is steadily increasing. Men have coarser facial features, stronger facial muscles and a wider bone structure. Their brows are lower and more horizontal -- sans arch. In men, a completely smooth look with arched brows can be unsettling. Generally, the first treatment with Botox® should be used in the same dose as for women (slightly undertreated) because this will leave some natural movement and integrity to the brow. Otherwise, those already low brows may drop like curtains in front of a man’s eyes. The frown lines on men can be very prominent -- think Leonardo DiCaprio -- and luckily, the world can forgive them for this, until they deepen to the point of looking severe. In this area, a smaller dose of Botox and very judicious use of filler can maintain expression minus the “perma-frown.” Crow’s feet may or may not be treated in men or can be half-treated because they are a sign of affability, approachability and a sense of humor since they come from smiling. The

lines can be softened while maintaining a masculine appearance, both at rest and during facial expression.

removed, so it behooves one to get the treatments before they go grey, lest they end up with a Yoda-like result.

Strong Angles

V-Shaped Torso

Men with a strong chin and brow are more attractive to women who are ovulating, a study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior found, suggesting that a strong jawline is associated with stronger genes. When we look at examples of handsome men, we invariably notice a strong angular jawline. Think Superman, Henry Cavill, Robert Pattinson and Hugh Jackman. The cheeks in these men are chiseled, flatter in the front and more prominent on the sides. The jawline is defined and slightly flared.

Masculine features include broad shoulders and strong arms and abs (see Magic Mike). When middle age starts creeping up on men, or even sometimes from the very start, they are not able to achieve the V-shaped body because of localized fat on the sides, also known as love handles. Without surgery or downtime, these problem areas can be reduced.

The male cheek can be augmented in a quick, minimally invasive way using fillers. Fillers that we use for men are Juvederm®, Juvederm Voluma® and Radiesse®. We take a different aesthetic approach than with female cheek augmentation. For women, we try to achieve a soft, full look for the lips and apples for the cheeks. For men, we instead augment the flare of the jaw to give a strong, angular appearance and fill the cheekbones further back, just below the temples. A strong chin has always been favored, and now, fillers can be used to project the chin and broaden it, if desired. In order to avoid a tired, gaunt look, we can also fill tear troughs under the eyes to reduce dark circles.

Manscaping According to the Urban Dictionary, the definition of manscaping is: To groom a man. Shaving, waxing, cleaning up the superfluous fur. One thing most women can agree with is that they could survive without their man’s ear, nose and back hair. Laser hair removal is a great long-term answer to eliminating the problem in these areas. Barring that, strategic use of clippers for the chest can be a great plan. Getting body hair under control not only sharpens a man’s look but is also a proven confidence booster.

Coolsculpting® is an innovative technology that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells without surgery or downtime. This is a perfect solution for the lower abdomen and love-handle area that men routinely complain about. The procedure is safe and effective, consistently providing a quarter-inch reduction in the treated area. The results are noticeable and long lasting. It is best for people who exercise and are fit but have stubborn areas that they can’t seem to get rid of. In our practice, this procedure is extremely popular. The Aesthetic Menaissance is for men seeking to look and feel their best. There are many low-to-no-downtime procedures that enhance or restore the male appearance. Whether it be facial fillers or Botox®, we can achieve a natural-looking result that respects the integrity of the masculine face. Laser hair removal can smooth out the rough edges and make manscaping, or grooming, easier. The waistline can be addressed without surgery or downtime. As long as procedures are tailored specifically to the male patient, the results are excellent. n The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice. Dr. Guanche is not a consultant for, nor receives consulting fees or compensation from, any of the product or device companies mentioned in this article.

Laser hair removal with the GentleLase® device can rid the skin of unwanted hair in a series of treatments. It is a high-energy, longpulse laser that creates a beam of highintensity light that penetrates deep into skin tissue where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat. The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of the skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects. Parameters and settings need to be set based on skin type and hair color in order to provide optimal results. Very light or grey hairs cannot be

The Open Floor Plan:

How to Create Finished Décor that is Unified, Serene and Interesting By Tammy Randall wood, ASID

H

omebuyers love the open floor plan for the comfortable and casual lifestyle it affords, and here in Southern California, a large integrated space is a natural fit with our climate and laid-back culture. However, creating a cohesive décor within multiple, connected spaces can pose some unique challenges since you can’t help but take in everything simultaneously. If particular attention is not paid to order, things can feel messy and overwhelming. How many of you have experienced this?

Design by Celeste Robbins, AIA of Robbins Architecture

One might try to compensate by adhering to a strict policy of only introducing items of one style or items with no style at all. While this is a valid option, you then run the risk of being too conservative with your choices and creating a palate so plain that it leaves you hungry.

Here are some rules I like to remember to keep a space controlled but compelling when it has an open floor plan: Stick to rich gradations of neutrals. Select a complex white or beige for the main paint color and it will easily telescope against other neutral tones in fabrics, tile or carpet to create a beautiful amalgam. Small shifts in tone and depth of shade can be incredibly satisfying to the eye. Rely on strong silhouettes to keep things interesting. Create intriguing rooms utilizing line and shape. This way you don’t bombard the eye with the overuse of pattern or color, which can sometimes compete for attention or clash in tone or scale.

Design by Yvonne McFadden, LLC Photographer: 32 CalabasasAngel Style Richards

A little bit of décor goes a long way in the open floor plan, so let something with a little more pop shine. Hold back, be a good editor and let your chosen articles do the talking without interruption. A great carpet or piece of art is always a nice place to start. In the room to the left,

the dense pattern and rich coloration of the vintage Heriz rug, combined with the tailored lines of well-loved antiques, are the perfect foil to the newly remodeled architecture. They give this space room to breathe with plenty of impact. The curve of a demilune cabinet, the sweeping form of a bergère chair, the vertical repetition of pickets on an architecturally compelling staircase or a bold cubist lamp shade are all terrific places for the eye to land. Combining modern, straight edges with old-world curves here or there can add a brilliant touch. Arrange surfaces, shelves and bookcases with care. Yes, these are places for service and storage, but they are also inherently display areas. Keep them tidy and composed. Invest in key accessories for your main surfaces that are scaled and curated with intent. Accessories can hold just as much aesthetic weight in a room as furniture does. Buy less but buy better. Make those choices matter. A hand-thrown ceramic bowl for fruit on the kitchen counter or a

Design by Joshua Mogal of Eco + Historical Inc Photographer: Open Homes Photography

rare antique box on the coffee table can not only make a statement, but can keep items like the remote control, reading glasses or coasters organized with grace.

Display groups of items together as a collection instead of scattering them about. Grouping related items together helps them read as one unit and speak with one uncomplicated voice, which reduces the feeling of clutter. Not every wall needs a painting and not every surface needs a tchotchke. Try locating your pieces in unexpected ways. A small painting can look great arranged within a bookcase, and a vintage typewriter can make a charming bookend. Remember to leave some surfaces empty. Think of them as the space between your words. I need order but I crave beauty! Many of my friends and clients tell me they feel the same. My favorite spaces are serene but must also be captivating and complete. We incorporate the principles outlined here time and again in projects of all types and styles, but they are never more resonant than when applied to the open floor plan. Here’s to creating your own noble spaces! n

Gary L. Wales

La Bestioni

By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Greg Grudt

T

here is a man who has turned his passion for the automobile into a lifetime of creativity. By all standards, Gary L. Wales is a man’s man. Some say he is a showman. Some say he is eclectic. Some say he is an artist. Some say he is a throwback to a different time when a handshake was a bond and a look in the eye said it all. Gary is all of that.

Gary has a penchant for history. His home is filled with antiques and artifacts that he has collected from all over the world. From pictures with European royalty and American celebrities to trophies from races and concours, it seems that there is simply nothing Gary has not done. For the last handful of years, Gary and his trusted assistant Andreas have been creating their own vehicles by saving 1919 American LaFrance fire engines and turning them into their own version of a hot rod -- La Bestioni. Gary’s La Bestionis are hand built in his garage and are a testament to both an earlier era, which Gary loves, as well as the vision and creativity that drives Gary -- doing his cars his way. The most recent La Bestionis have a very special paint on them. In fact, it is not paint but rust! Gary often finds the “bones” of the oncegreat fire trucks, and they are battered with rust. Gary has embraced the rust and found a way to turn what many feel is a negative into a thing of beauty. In doing so, he has returned these fire trucks to life and inspired the entire car world with La Bestioni. n

She and her husband, Artem, are the owners of Fit Core Smart Moves, a personal training, Pilates, TRX and yoga studio located in the heart of Calabasas that offers a holistic approach to fitness.

Change Your Workout:

Transform Your Life with Fit Core Smart Moves By Elena Richards Photography by Marvin Steindler

T

he time is gone when getting in shape meant getting through the day sore, starving and exhausted or, even worse, acquiring all sorts of injuries. Anyone who does their share of aerobics, running and dieting knows that when you do enough impact activity, it inevitably stresses the joints to the point of inflammation and pain and that once you come off that strict diet, the pounds just start piling back up again.

Fortunately, there is a better way! And that better way means striving towards workouts based on the latest insight from sports medicine and the wisdom of yoga. With this approach, the goal is different. Working out is no longer about getting in shape at any cost. Instead, the goal is to get or maintain healthy, athletic body composition while ensuring that your body functions in the most efficient way possible. As you maintain a healthy body, you have a lot of energy, your mind is stress free and you are productive in anything you do.

40

Calabasas Style

With this new approach, the assessment is no longer about how many pushups you can do or how fast you can run. The assessment is about quality: structure and function. Through simple functional movements, you look at each set of opposing muscles and identify muscle imbalances. If muscles on one side of the joint are stronger or tighter than on the other side, they pull, and the structure and function are compromised. Eliminating muscle imbalance gives you more efficiency and, therefore, more energy as you move. Another way to create efficiency in the body is to reduce the body fat percentage that resists you and build strong muscles that help you. Eliminating the tug of war between muscles dramatically speeds up progress to more complex, total-body exercises that activate as many muscles as possible. Total-body workouts are most effective for people that want to lose weight and achieve other fitness goals. Additionally, learning multi-joint movements improves coordination and neuro-

muscular efficiency and builds more neural connections in the brain, creating more vitality in the brain and improving communication between the brain and the rest of your body.

Here is how and why. It is not surprising that over 80 percent of people have lower-back pain. Some people keep a natural curve, but for most, the curve is either flattened or excessively arched. When the curve is flattened, not only are the abdominal muscles so tight that they are pulling on the lower back, creating much of the discomfort, but they are also squeezing all of the internal organs. As a result, absorption of essential vitamins and nutrients and detoxification of the body through digestion are compromised. If flattening of the back is the case, the muscles of the back need to be strengthened more than the ab muscles to lessen the pull and, as such, return the spine to its natural curve. Deep yogic breath massages all the

internal organs, oxygenating and nourishing them. Conversely, if you do a lot of crunches and sit-ups without strengthening your back and doing deep abdominal breathing and stretching, you will stiffen your body even more, resulting in a greater array of problems. Another very common compensation is rounding of the shoulders -- that hunchingover look. The results are not only shoulder and neck pain, but also the constricting of your chest and lungs. If the muscles around your rib cage are tight, they will prevent you from taking full, deep breaths. In yoga, this means constricting your prana, or life force, significantly diminishing your energy. At the same time, after taking just a few deep breaths when you relax and stretching out the tight muscles around your chest, it feels inspiring and life affirming. When you get stressed out, it usually affects your neck and shoulder muscles, making that area tight. The tight muscles constrict the blood vessels that go through them, carrying blood to and from your brain. It’s

easy to forget that your neck is the only way of communication between your brain and your entire body. Hindering this prevents muchneeded oxygen and nutrients from nourishing your brain and toxins from being cleared out of your brain. The tone of your neck muscles affects the balance of chemicals in your brain, your mood and your decision-making. Strengthening these muscles by pulling your shoulders down while opening up the space between your neck and shoulders through stretching allows the circulation to improve brain function and overall health. In some cultures, the neck and shoulder area is considered to be a mirror to the soul.

Once you correct the muscle imbalances, you create more balance and efficiency in your body and you get so much more energy, not just to complete the most difficult of workouts, but to face life’s challenges. n Fit Core Smart Moves 23480 Park Sorrento, #117A Calabasas, CA 91302 805.469.2020 fitcoresmartmoves.com

Your body, by default, chooses the path of least resistance. It is often the case that certain muscles get tight because other muscles, which are supposed to be active, get weak and lazy. For example, if you sit through most of the day, your glutes get weak and your piriformis has to take on the workload instead. This imbalance causes the piriformis to get tight, creating back pain. Therefore, you must correct this by strengthening the glute muscles.

As an advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States, John Muir was onto something when he claimed, “In every walk with nature, one receives more than he seeks.” So besides taking in Mother Nature’s finest creations -- mountains, beaches, hills and wildlife -- hiking offers immense benefits for overall well-being. For adults, regular aerobic exercise like hiking contributes to improved muscular fitness, improved cardio-respiratory fitness and lower risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Hiking also lowers the risk of developing high cholesterol, increases bone density and promotes weight control. Also, research suggests that couples who sweat together stay together, so why not take your honey out to explore new plains for the perfect day date?

Hiking is also a great way to add some much-deserved familybonding time to your busy schedule. Children who hike are known to reap the same health-related benefits as adults, and hiking also helps kids sleep through the night. What’s not to love about toddlers sleeping through the night? Hiking also keeps us in touch with ourselves. This happens naturally as we direct our focus to the trail and the ability of our bodies -- climbing the steepest hills and then taking in a deep breath at the top -- making it easy to see hiking as a natural healer. In a study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers measured oxidative stress rates of women with breast cancer and men with prostate cancer before and after hiking. The study found that long-distance hiking trips may improve the antioxidative capacity -- that helps to fight off disease -- in the blood of oncological patients. Research also shows that hiking can be used as a form of therapy for those suffering from depression. It increases feelings of hope, reducing depression and inspiring a more active and happy lifestyle. That’s why hiking aficionados don’t send their friends off with “happy trails” for nothing! Let’s take a look at some of the most unique, stunning and adventurous trails in the area. Some make for the perfect Sunday morning stroll, others are metabolism-revving cardio workouts and some are ideal as a rejuvenating midday pick-me-up. Take your pick, seize the day and show gratitude to your body and soul!

Murphy’s Ranch

One of the most intriguing trails is the Murphy Ranch Trail -a 3.1-mile, round-trip journey that reaches an elevation of approximately 600 feet. The hike takes about one to two hours to complete, and it’s open to the public year-round. Fourlegged furry friends are always welcome. Though the hike is on the easier side of the spectrum, this is not your picnic-inthe-park trail because it includes a trek up 500 steep stairs. Make sure you have your best hiking shoes on and are ready to work your glutes. The trailhead for Murphy Ranch is at the corner of Capri Drive and Casale Road in Pacific Palisades, and there is free street parking close by. The history here is quite astounding. The compound at the trail was built by the Silver Shirts -- a pro-Nazi organization -- and was designed as a self-sustaining compound with a water tank and bomb shelters for members to ride out the entirety of World War II. Presently owned by the City of Los Angeles, the compound is in a state of ruins with a power station and collapsed machine shed at the base of the trail. If you want to take in Los Angeles like a tourist, traveling to a landmark like the Hollywood Sign is a must. There are three hiking trails available at the legendary site. For all the movie buffs out there, the Brush Canyon Trail is rated “PG” on the scale of difficulty. This moderate hiking experience deserves a day all to itself as it comes in as a 6.4-mile round-trip excursion and reaches an elevation of 1,100 feet. You’ll definitely deserve to come home to movie night in bed with your favorite take-out

after this one! Don’t miss your chance to explore the location famous for Jim Morrison’s photo shoots. The second trail is the Hollyridge Trail. It’s rated “G” since it’s a little easier on the legs and comes in at 3.5 miles with a 750-foot elevation gain. This is the perfect trail to get in a cardio workout while catching up with an old friend. Who doesn’t love to mix friends and Mother Nature? Last but not least, for those who like the best of both worlds, is the Wonder View Trail. It’s a shorter hiking experience that still offers a fitness challenge. It’s rated “PG-13” thanks to its 3-mile round-trip trail and 925 feet of elevation gain. If you are looking to add some natural magic to your hike, Escondido Falls is the perfect choice! The trailhead is located at 27200 Winding Way, Malibu, and the hike falls on the easier side of the spectrum. It’s a 3.8-mile round-trip expedition on paved roads that passes extravagant Malibu homes. Easy on the eyes and fulfilling for the soul, after gaining 200 feet in elevation, the trail also leads to a majestic waterfall where everyone’s inner child is welcome to come out and play and cool off on a heated day. After the waterfall, head downhill on the road and arrive at a wooded park that is open for the public and all our furry friends to enjoy! If we’ve sparked an interest in hiking, just remember to start small. Explore various routes but take it easy on your first few times out. When you’re ready, explore further to enjoy intermediate-level hiking trails too. n

These are a few of

My Favorite THINGS By Marc Cohen

O

ne of my favorite things in life is food. It’s true. I admit it. I have managed to avoid weighing five hundred pounds by working out a million times per week. Herein lies the problem. How do you enjoy everything you wish to eat without the weight gain?

I have decided to give you some great food options, as well as some pointers as to how I lost that 10 pounds that I just gained doing what I love most. Check out the following apps, available for your IOS or Android system in most cases: If you are a home cook, check out Fooducate. It was voted the top Fitness and Health App of 2011. You can scan barcodes for ingredients and product safety. It will assign a grade for healthiness that includes things like ingredient interactions and food dyes that might create carcinogens. It’s free, or an upgraded version sells for around $4.00 and also will give you healthy alternatives.

If you love seafood as I do, Seafood Watch, sponsored by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, gives you the most current recommendations for seafood and sushi. It keeps track of the names of restaurants and stores that offer sustainable seafood, which is good for both you and the eco world. Worried about what you eat? Take a look at True Food. This app helps you keep track of GMOs (genetically modified foods). Yuck. It breaks down the food by stores and companies. If you love eating but hate cooking, I’ve got you covered. Check out some of the best apps for finding the perfect restaurant: Yelp. It gives you menu info, ratings by consumers, pictures and a great search engine for whatever area you are planning to dine in. One word of caution, though: You don’t know who is writing

48

Calabasas Style

the review. It may be written by friends of the owners or the owners themselves. Check out the reviewers to see how many different restaurants they reviewed and how many different reviews have been written on the restaurant in general -- the more the better. I tend to throw out the great reviews and the poor reviews, landing somewhere in the middle. I have used this quite effectively, and it’s free! I am a fan of Open Table, which will make a reservation for you. It then emails your information for the reservation and allows you to forward it to your dinner companions. Even better, it accumulates points that can be turned into gift certificates! Now the tough part -- losing the weight you just gained. There is no easy solution, my friends. We’ve all heard it before: Move more and watch the ingredients you consume. But there are a couple of cool apps that can ease your path. My favorite free app is My Fitness Pal. It gives you a weight loss goal and keeps track of both your workout stats and your caloric intake. It has an extensive library of foods and restaurants. I use it every day. You’ll never go wrong if you do cardio an hour a day, watch your intake and make nourishing choices. Indulge on the weekend; don’t deprive yourself of that occasional donut. Be healthy, live long and prosper. n Where have I heard that before? See you on the radio. Marc Marc Cohen Host of Computer and Technology Radio computerandtechnologyradio.com

magine Tuscany and the South of France in your own backyard. Imagine sitting among olive trees and vineyards sipping a French rosé while enjoying a fresh baguette with an assortment of gourmet cheeses and fresh local crudité. Well, you don’t have to travel to Italy or France to feel like you’re in a European village because you can let the Westlake Village Inn transport you there. The Westlake Village Inn at the Village is situated on 17 picturesque acres of manicured gardens and boasts waterfalls, private lakes and streams with French limestone fountains and a collection of Mediterranean-style buildings. It also features a boutique hotel, restaurants and a state of the art meeting space. Opened in 1968, along the historic El Camino Real, this beautiful boutique property has charmed travelers, political dignitaries and celebrities from the music, television and movie industries. The Village offers an unparalleled experience as it is the only hotel in the area offering designer appointed rooms and suites with fireplaces, private patios and balconies with views spanning

gardens, a golf course and lakes. It also boasts a private working vineyard, making it a popular venue for weddings, rehearsal dinners, baby showers, wedding showers, anniversaries, corporate events and more! The Village is also home to one of the most popular restaurants in the Conejo Valley. Mediterraneo has become a local favorite, known for its creative menu and lively happy hour with innovative cocktails, delectable dishes and live music from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The restaurant’s menu is inspired by a passion for fresh, seasonal cuisine and showcases the best of local farms. The chef tantalizes guests with classic and contemporary favorites fusing Mediterranean and Californian flavors. Mediterraneo’s wine list features delicious wines from around the world. “We are proud to offer the highest quality wines at the most affordable prices,” says CEO/COO Chris Cuilty. Just a step away, Bogie’s Lounge and Nightclub is the perfect spot for cocktails and dancing, offering some of the best weekend nightlife in the area. They present a singer/songwriter

series on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, featuring some of the region’s most talented musicians in a friendly, intimate setting. Don’t be surprised if a world-renowned musician stops by to sit in with the band. On Wednesdays, they heat things up with salsa dancing. The night starts with beginner lessons and progresses to advanced instruction and is capped off with a live salsa band monthly. The most recent addition to the Village, The Stonehaus, is an Italian enoteca that is as authentic as those found in Tuscany. The Stonehaus features some of the best wines from the central coast of California to Napa and, of course, from our local Malibu wineries. This ideal meeting place is filled with local cyclists gathering before and after their daily rides. The breakfast menu is perfect for the health conscious and the gourmet. Midday is a mix of business lunches and old friends catching up over a delicious sandwich or salad and glass of wine. The afternoons are “family time,” where parents, grandparents and children can gather and play tag among the olive trees or enjoy a game of bocce ball. In the evening, the festoon lights go on and The Stonehaus comes alive with a completely different energy. It is “The Place” to sip, taste and discover while making friends at the communal tables, experiencing new wines, dining on brick oven pizza and listening to live acoustic music. Many locals have also become members of the Stonehaus Wine Club and receive ongoing newsletters, discounts, event invitations and information about newly released wines. They offer two levels of membership and multiple opportunities to be part of a unique lifestyle, gathering place. If you want to join a group of wine enthusiasts who enjoy a unique selection of brilliant wines from family-owned vineyards around the globe, you should definitely check it out. The Village is the perfect location for a great night or weekend getaway because it’s one destination with so many possibilities. If you want to keep in touch with all of the wonderful changes at the Village at the Westlake Village Inn, you can download their apps or check the blog and social media updates on the Westlake Village Inn website. n

Partaking in Foodie

Paradise

The best places to eat, drink and be merry By Pax Ansley

I

t’s Friday. The work week has finally come to a close. You’re dining al fresco at your favorite restaurant, surrounded by close friends. You hear the gentle trickle of a stone water feature; every time the door to the kitchen opens, a new and delicious scent wafts by your nose. Your senses are fully engaged as is your appetite. You look around you, and everywhere you turn there are people coming together. You hear the nervous laughter of a couple on their first date alongside the familiar banter of a couple on their two-hundredth date. The joyous notes of “Happy Birthday to you…” mingle with a heartfelt speech celebrating someone’s retirement. Like the watering holes of the African plains, restaurants function to bring people together from all walks of life. One reason is because everybody eats. Eating is a necessity that unites all creatures in the world and dining out is one pastime that makes life worth living. That is a given. What you choose to put into your body, where you do it and with whom are the variables that can turn this necessary function into a truly remarkable experience. Lucky for us, Calabasas and its surrounding areas have plenty of the most exciting and unique restaurants that make for an all-around fulfilling dining experience. Angelinos are also fortunate enough to live in the land of eternal summer, which makes for some incredible outdoor seating options and picturesque views of the ocean, lakes and sunsets. Restaurants come and go like the seasons, but there are those that stick around. And there is something about them that sets them apart from the rest. They posses a certain je ne sais quoi that makes you want to bring your out-of-town friends when they ask “What’s good to eat around here?” Start your day off right at Blu Jam Café in Woodland Hills. This hip little joint wins our award for best breakfast. With local and organic ingredients, taste the fresh Southern California produce on their all-day breakfast menu. Holding to the belief that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the Blu Jam

Café offers a creative and eclectic menu that merges flavors from around the world. Craving some chilaquiles at 3:00 p.m.? No problema. In the mood for an award-winning corned beef sandwich? You might recognize Brent’s Delicatessen & Restaurant from “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” on Food Network, where deli aficionado Marc Summers praises Brent’s for the best corned beef sandwich. This family-run business has been around since 1969 and has been voted the #1 Delicatessen & Restaurant by Zagat 17 years in a row. Brent’s not only features more than 650 deli and restaurant items, but also offers complete catering for celebrations, events and corporate gatherings. Another great lunch place to discover is the STACKED experience, which is all about getting exactly what you want. STACKED proudly offers America’s favorite foods – burgers, pizza, salads and mac ‘n cheese -- and lets customers choose between dozens of ingredients to create the perfect meal for their tastes. Kids are often spotted helping their parents order off of the laptops, which we love as an innovative ordering approach that enables you to control when you order and pay and let’s you customize your meal in a comfortable, uninhibited way. Love sandwiches? Head to Mendocino Farms in Westlake Village for the best sandwiches money can buy. These sandwiches are serious business. With a completely unpretentious “downhome” vibe, this restaurant reconstructs “fine dining” entrees and takes them to the sandwich level and takes classic regional sandwiches and gives them a modern interpretation. Much of their food is sourced locally, so their menu is always fresh and seasonal. If cycling is your thing, grab your bike and head to Pedalers Fork, right here in Calabasas. Not only do they have an actual bike shop, but they also have a boutique coffee roastery and lots of fresh food items to choose from. You don’t have to know how to ride to enjoy Continued on page 64

Continued from page 62 their locally sourced and delicious menu. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they have earned a spot in our hearts for having the best farm-to-table dishes in town. No bicycle required. Looking for the best pizza in Calabasas? Look no further than ROSTI Tuscan Kitchen. The authentic, mouth-watering pizza will leave you singing “Bella Notte.” ROSTI’s thin-crust pizzas are handmade with dough made from scratch, house marinara sauce and freshly grated mozzarella! Build your own or choose from more than 15 chef-designed pies! Gluten or meat not your thing? ROSTI’s has both a gluten-free and vegan-friendly menu. Come in for their weekend brunch or lunch and dinner daily. If you are in the mood for a great burger, you’ll find it at a new place with a familiar address. The Twisted Oak Tavern, formally The Lab, has a new look and feel. Located in the Agoura Hills Town Center, the remodeled design includes 100-year barn wood on the walls and new wrap-around barn design that you can enjoy when you watch them brew the same Lab beer that everyone loves. They also elevated the pub cuisine and offer the best burgers in town with fresh beef ground right on the premises. If you have a big group to feed or are in need of a banquet and catering help, you can rely on Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant in Woodland Hills, where you can have the Maggiano family take care of yours for, as they say, “any size, any event and any location.” Not only do they have incredible Italian catering options, but they also do dinner service at the restaurant. They encourage family-style ordering, a wonderful option that brings everyone’s attention to the meal and each other -- not an easy feat in our very distracted society.

Are you crazy for pho? While you’re in Westlake Village, head to 9021PHO. This restaurant, inspired by Chef Kimmy Tang, matches traditional Vietnamese pho with a French and Californian influence. And if you are counting calories, their healthy menu will satisfy the strictest of diets. This casual fusion joint has garnered our attention for being the best French Vietnamese restaurant in the area, with great food and a carefully selected variety of California and French wines at an incredible value. One of the great things about living in Southern California is the abundance of produce and organic farms. Paul Martin’s American Grill in Westlake Village has an incredibly diverse seasonal menu that is extremely focused on quality. You can tell the difference in each dish. They choose to use locally grown produce, sustainable fisheries and free-range meats. Their menu encourages sharing and communal dining, so bring your friends for a truly collective dining experience. Don’t miss another great option for fabulously fresh food at SALT restaurant in Calabasas. This restaurant is a real hidden gem since you might not expect to find this level of amazing cuisine in this shopping center, which is also the home to fast-food joints, including Jack in the Box, Dominos and Subway. SALT is tucked away at the western end of this center, with a great interior design and food prepared by SALT owner and chef David Ino, who opened the L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills and the Napa Valley Grille in Westwood. If you’re having a primal craving for steak, our recommendation is to go for the best at Morton’s The Steakhouse, where they Continued on page 68

Morton’s is the perfect destination for dinner, thanks to their extensive wine collection, prime-aged beef, succulent seafood and decadent desserts. Focusing on quality, consistency and genuine hospitality, Morton’s always provides memorable cuisine and a memorable experience. Discover a higher standard of steakhouse at legendary Morton’s. With locations in most of the major cities across America, it is no surprise that this award-winning steakhouse never disappoints. Our top pick for authentic Italian is Toscanova. The first Toscanova opened in Century City in 2009, and their second Italian trattoria opened its doors in Calabasas in April 2012. The amazing food, the fashionably fabulous customers and the entertaining environment make Toscanova a favorite for many. Whether colleagues come to discuss deals over lunch, first dates come to fall in love over dinner or friends come to enjoy the patio people-watching after seeing a movie, all leave with lasting memories. Toscanova is always bustling and continually offers Chef Sciandri’s new and innovative specials -- a modern approach to his classic dishes. If you are craving something a little south of the border, don’t miss visiting the iconic Sagebrush Cantina, right here in the heart of Old Town Calabasas. Complete with sawdust on the ground, this saloon-style restaurant is quite an experience. There are few better feelings than listening to live music with a cold beer in your hand and a tummy full of Mexican food. Don’t forget to shake the sawdust off your shoes when you leave. 68 Calabasas Style

During those summer scorchers, while the Valley smolders, head to the beach and dig your toes into the cool sand. And why not have a Mai Tai while you are at it? At surf-themed Duke’s in Malibu, you can do just that. At their “barefoot bar” and beach party, you can party like you’re in paradise because, well, you are in paradise. Try out their award-winning Hawaiian-themed cuisine while you watch the sun set over the Pacific. You might even be lucky enough to meet their Ambassador of Aloha, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, the real-life beach bunny inspiration for Gidget. Another great Malibu choice is The Sunset Restaurant. As the name implies, this is an incredible spot to sip a glass of wine and watch a Southern California sunset. With incredible decor and the location right on the water, this is a great spot for date night. It also takes the prize for freshest seafood. With a weekday happy hour, brunch on the weekend and a seafood bar -- all topped off with an ocean view, it can’t get much better. If going over the hill to the beach seems like a trek, there is another water-front restaurant that is a little closer to home and just as stunning. It’s Zin Bistro Americana, featuring a breathtaking lakeside location in Westlake Village. Sit at the outdoor patio and enjoy the scenery. You might even catch some live music during the week. We love this spot for date night. The stunning lake is the perfect backdrop for staring into your dreamy date’s eyes. This, plus the classy decor, make it the most romantic setting imaginable. The menu features all of the fusions and cultural blending that makes American cuisine unique. Continued on page 72

Featuring a beautiful working vineyard and stunning architecture, the Westlake Village Inn is home to three fantastic restaurants. On one side is The Stonehaus. Aptly named, this beautifully serene restaurant has a gorgeous patio with a view of the winery, winetasting options and even a wine club. The peaceful setting is hands down the best place to meet up with friends, family, business associates, significant others and basically anyone you know who likes wine. Right next door is Mediterraneo. This restaurant wins our vote for the best European bistro. You’ll be transported to Europe with their seasonal, local produce and deliciously flavorful menu. At the other end of the spectrum, Bogie’s gives you a chance to dance the night away. Go to Bogie’s to paint the town red, but make sure you wear your snazziest duds because there is a dress code. Don’t forget your dancing shoes. This place takes the cake for the best nightlife. Speaking of wine, there’s a fabulous new establishment called the Aldabella Custom Crush Winery in Westlake Village across from the Four Seasons with a beautiful Tuscan-themed tasting room. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy wine from local growers. It’s also well-suited for everything from gatherings with intimate groups of friends and family to corporate events and large parties. It’s open every weekend with wine options for tasting by the glass or by the bottle. You can also experience winemaking at its best without a drive to Napaand discover the perfect place to store your wines if you are a collector. You can also become a member to receive awesome benefits.

Another great place to meet up with friends is a brand new speakeasy-style restaurant in Agoura Hills called Revolution Speakeasy, that offers a great lounge and dining room that serve eclectic European fusion cuisine. Their “Lock & Load” menu includes items like “The Bootlegger,” “Revved up Calamari” and “The Flapper.” If you are the type that comes alive at night, you’ll like the “After Hours Lounge” that is open from 10:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Of course, most of us celebrate some of life’s most important occasions by dining out with family and friends. If you are celebrating something in your life, the best special-occasion destination is definitely Mastro’s Steakhouse in Thousand Oaks and the new Mastro’s Malibu – formally the old Chart House. Mastro’s and Matsro’s Malibu offer a truly unparalleled dining experience for all your special occasions. Both locations offer a menu of the finest prime steaks and premium fresh seafood, served in a sophisticated, classic atmosphere. Make sure you top of your special celebration dinner with Mastro’s signature and legendary warm-butter cake! And last but not least, you don’t have to leave the neighborhood to discover fine dining at its best. Riviera Restaurant and Lounge offers world-class dining in the heart of Calabasas. Their diverse menu includes a full Italian, American and international selection of recipes from the best restaurants in the world. The Riviera is a favorite neighborhood dining spot for locals and a welcome dining delight for area visitors. The presentation of the food is artistic, the service is warm and friendly and they have one of the best happy hours in town. Cheers! n

Local chefs and winemakers from 13 distinct teams competed with their best food and wine pairings. This was no easy-aspie competition though as these masterful flavor combinations were judged by both the event attendees and a blind panel of experts, finally discovering the culinary team with the “Best Food and Wine Pairing.” The competition was strictly friendly as patrons of the event bid on various featured items during the silent auction with all proceeds being donated to Hope’s Haven Charity. Their knowledgeable staff, custom crush operations, climate-controlled wine storage and elegant event center provide a wide array of services to anyone with a love of wine.

selecting the perfect yeast best suited to ferment each particular grape. The Aldabella winemakers are on hand during the pressing process and in selecting the best type of barrel for aging, since the type of barrel used in aging has a big effect on the clarity and taste of the wine. Last but not least, they will help growers with the blending of varietals and the finishing process, which is where the art and science of winemaking convene. Whether you’re a novice winemaker interested in producing your own barrel to enjoy with family and friends or a producer processing several tons of grapes looking to further distribution, Aldabella can cater to your every need.

The Malibu/Calabasas area now boasts a great number of small and medium-size vineyards, with people growing grapes and making wine either for personal consumption or retail sales. Aldabella’s senior winemaker, Norm Stafford, brings his many years of award-winning winemaking experience to create and help create award-winning, hand-crafted wines.

While this expert winemaking service is fabulous for local growers – it’s just part of the service that Aldabella offers. Unless you’ve taken the time and expense to carve out a cave in your home, storing wine can present a serious challenge. From temperature fluctuations to space needs, from safety concerns to ease of access, wine storage for winemakers and collectors presents its own unique set of issues. Therefore, another big part of Aldabella’s business is providing wine collectors with the ideal conditions to store their collections. The facility is temperature controlled to keep wine as close to perfect as possible, avoiding vibrations, bright light and temperature swings that can do real damage to delicate and even priceless wine treasures. Mayor:

David J. Shapiro

Presents Calabasas State of the City Address

By Sabrina Samedi Photography by Derek De La Luz

C

alabasas residents joined forces echoing the notion that the community has heart on February 4th to support Mayor David Shapiro as he delivered the 17th Annual State of City Address at Calabasas High School’s Performing Arts Center. Mayor Shapiro focused on six major topics during the address: safety, finances, education, environment, public works and community services. Starting the night on a high note, Mayor Shapiro shared, “Safety is something that is near and dear to all of our hearts and I’m pleased to report that our pulse is strong.” According to the SafeWise Report, Calabasas is the 13th safest city in California. Mayor Shapiro assured that the importance of safety and a healthy environment also extends to our community’s children and schools. October has been named anti-bullying month on local campuses and Calabasas High School will be hosting an anti-bullying assembly. Following through with this year’s theme that Calabasas has heart, the first Chamber of Heart Award of the evening went to Calabasas High School Peer Support.

As Mayor Shapiro explained, healthy finances are a part of Calabasas’s life-blood, and he reported that “despite challenging times, Calabasas has maintained the highest credit rating for a city of our size with both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s (AA++ rating).” The praises continued since, for the tenth consecutive year, the City of Calabasas; its chief financial officer, Dr. Gary J. Lysik; and his staff were awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association. The evening’s events also revealed that businesses love Calabasas as six of the 25 largest companies in the San Fernando Valley call Calabasas their home. Returning such love to many of the city’s prospering businesses, the second Chamber of Heart Award went to Bob Smith and the BMW/Mini Cooper Dealership. The accolade acknowledges the BMW/Mini Cooper Dealership as the first-ever “Business of the Year,” Bob Smith’s success and the dealership’s standing as an active community member, supporting schools, youth and seniors programs as well as sponsoring city events such as the Calabasas Film Festival. Regarding community service and outreach, Mayor Shapiro couldn’t have been more pleased with how Calabasas came together to raise awareness and funds to help fight cancer during the city’s Relay for Life event. Thus, the third Chamber of Heart Award went to Matthew and Jose Alvarez. Alvarez is currently fighting cancer and is a true testament to resilience in the face of adversity. The fourth Chamber of Heart Award went to the Rotary Club of Calabasas for organizing the 26th Annual Free Thanksgiving meal for local senior citizens and for the Club’s outstanding “Neighbors in Need” program. Henry Cespedes, former chairman of the Tree Board in Calabasas and the CPHA Landscape Committee, was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award. For those looking to learn more about the Mayor’s speech, the State of City Address will play on CTV3 and the city website thoughtout March and well into the spring. n

Tapas & Wine at MUSE By Sabrina Samedi

MUSE parents Dan and Patricia Philips hosted an exclusive wine and tapas event for MUSE School on December 6th to benefit MUSE’s Passion Fund. One-hundred percent of all proceeds went directly to aid MUSE students in fulfilling their passions. The Passion Fund supports the resources and programs that allow MUSE students to follow their interests, whatever they may be, from music to bikes to marine biology. The Passion Fund aims to give MUSE the ability to nurture the spark in every student. The exquisite and scrumptious vegan tapas-centered cuisine was prepared by Food & Wine-honored chef Tim Goodell with the help of MUSE students. One student in particular, Lilliya Reid, was ecstatic to pursue her passion for cooking by assisting Chef Goodell in the kitchen. Chef Goodell is the founder of Domaine Restaurants, which has launched several restaurants, including the upscale burger chain 25 Degrees, the pan-Asian Red Pearl Kitchen, and most recently, Public Kitchen and Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. As guests took it upon themselves to explore this culinary sensation, they were also greeted with door prizes and an opportunity to mix and mingle with food and wine aficionados.

Financial Brief

Inflation

FOR Economic Peak Performance PART two

By Mark Wendell

I

n Part One of this series, we defined inflation and explained why a moderate level of inflation is a necessary component of a healthy, growing economy. Part Two applies this knowledge to several issues in today’s economy related to inflation, including consumer confidence, the effect of falling prices and government intervention.

Consumer sentiment, which can be significantly influenced by the media, is one important driver of inflation. Economists have for many years correctly assumed that the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, Congress and the President’s economic advisors, collectively referred to as policymakers, influence markets and economic activity. And this is done not just through financial channels, but also by directly shaping the public’s views about the future through deliberate press releases to the media. For example, if the media report expectations for a slow economy or low inflation or higher taxes, consumers and businesses may be less inclined to spend, borrow or invest. And if the public anticipates that prices will decline, resulting in no inflation or deflation, and senses further delays in interest rate hikes, they will be less likely to buy houses or businesses, invest in plant and equipment, hire employees or increase wages. These actions -- or lack of actions -- in turn, contribute to slow growth or a stagnant economy. This scenario of stagnation persists in our economy today: For the ninth year in a row through 2014, the U.S. economy has underper

100 Calabasas Style

formed to the tune of an annual GDP (Growth Domestic Product) growth rate below 3 percent -- the longest stretch of slow or negative growth since the early 1930s (The Wall Street Journal, 02/01/15). However, recent media reports of labor market improvements may finally signal a long sought-after acceleration in the rate of inflation, average hourly wages and economic growth in the face of a low labor force participation rate of 62.9 percent (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 01/07/15), remaining near the lowest rate since 1978 that may not yet signal optimism. A tax increase of $320 billion is being proposed at the same moment when GDP for 2014 is reported at an anemic rate of 2.4 percent, and for the fourth quarter at a lackluster 2.6 percent, of which only 1.9 percent is attributable to business investment (Bureau of Economic Analysis). Less business investment slows productivity and thus wage growth. Higher taxation of dividends and capital gains reduces the incentive for business investment that will ultimately contribute to economic stagnation. Beyond the influence of the Federal Reserve, falling prices of goods and services can directly contribute to declining inflation. With the recent drop in energy prices, the cost of goods and services may fail to rise, or they may even decline. And the recent surge in the value of the dollar is resulting in suppression of inflation due to cheaper import prices. While this outcome may sound appealing to the public, a general price reduction can spread like a virus and become quite destructive to an economy. Price

stability is a basic pillar of a strong economy and a deflationary cycle would cause the economic system to freeze up because purchases, lending and borrowing would come to a screeching halt and consumer prices may fall, causing businesses to fail and unemployment to rise, with each element reinforcing the other in a domino effect that is difficult to stop. In addition, government intervention can certainly have an effect on inflation. The Federal Reserve has been artificially setting the price of credit by offering near-zero interest rates through the bond buying program known as quantitative easing, or QE. As well, the Federal Reserve has been controlling the amount of bank credit that is available through regulatory policy and leverage standards. The effect of this policy has been to channel credit to the safest borrower -- the wealthy, the government and corporations -- who may not be the best job creators, at the expense of small savers, small businesses and moderate-income borrowers. These actions have distorted our normal market-based credit system because the program has had a tightening effect on credit by incenting banks to avoid their normal risk-taking role of lending to the private sector and small business. The result of this excessively centrally controlled system, where risk is no longer incentivized and rewards are no longer prized, is slowed business activity, a stagnating economic cycle and almost nonexistent inflation. Today’s policymakers who want to encourage growth in the standard of living and average wages paid must increase their country’s productive ability by encouraging a genuine incentivized risk and reward system where capital can flow freely and be put to work without excessive regulations or a punitive tax system interfering. Joseph Schumpeter, a legendary 20th century economist, posited that the miracle of capitalism lies in its power to democratize wealth, that is, create a simple system to allow for business startups and mass-market-efficient production. He argued that capitalism sparks entrepreneurship. Mr. Schumpeter pointed out that entrepreneurs innovate not just by figuring out how to use inventions, but also by introducing new means of production, new products and new forms of organization. Entrepreneurs and small businesses are the backbone of our country’s wealth, as measured by GDP. The general standard of living of its citizenry depends on its ability to welcome sparks of entrepreneurship and produce goods and services efficiently within a legal framework, a stable credit system and a predictable and fair taxation system, all combined to allow capital to flow freely, and therefore, allow the wealth of a country to multiply rather than stagnate. Economic growth is the single most powerful determinant of federal revenues and standards of living for all citizens. The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) projects that if annual gross domestic

product (GDP) were to average one percentage point higher, there would be an additional $2.9 trillion, inflation adjusted, in revenues over a decade (The Wall Street Journal, 02/03/15). Economists may differ in their opinions as to the proper role of the government in promoting a healthy economy. However, when our own financial system provides for more disincentives than incentives, whether by burdensome regulations, interest rate manipulations or excessive taxation and subsidies, the economy will eventually flounder under its own weight of unfairness and distortions, well-intended or not. And at the center of this dysfunction are attempts by policymakers to manage wages, prices and interest rates, under the guise of fairness and progress, in an effort to influence inflation and consumer spending. And recently, the term “middleclass” has been used by policymakers that provoke empathy and votes, but seldom does their policy actually benefit this group, and paradoxically, it often feeds into the issue of economic stagnation since their efforts usually benefit ‘the few’ at the expense of ‘the many’. The movement to mandate equality by punishing the successful and talented in the name of fairness is counterproductive, since the real problem is the economic smothering effects of a leviathan-labyrinth empire of taxation that has been eroding our capitalistic system, including GDP. Overhaul! This is the only answer that will have the serendipitous bolstering effect of an economic stimulus for the economy and all citizens alike. The monetary intervention we have been experiencing was originally initiated to prevent a banking system failure. Mission accomplished. But any ongoing excessive governmental involvement in a capitalistic free-market-based system, regardless of intentions, will distort results, impede growth to the point of fostering a self-perpetuating cycle of stagnation and, ultimately, lead to overwhelming governmental involvement in an effort to constantly try to prevent the failure that may have been of their own making due to futile manipulations of the economy. The success of one generation’s policymakers in learning and heeding these fundamental lessons about economic growth and inflation will determine what kind of world the next generation will inherit -peak performance or not. n Copyright © Mark Wendell 2015. Ask the

Pharmacist Q

A friend of mine is recovering from shingles. I keep seeing commercials for a vaccine to prevent it. I don’t remember if I had chicken pox. Should I get the vaccine?

A

Shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chicken pox in kids. The virus stays in your body and can cause shingles many years later. Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters. For about one person in five, severe pain can continue long after the rash clears up. Other symptoms include fever, headache, chills and an upset stomach. Shingles can lead to other complications, such as blindness, hearing complications, pneumonia, brain inflammation and even death. Shingles is far more common in people over age 50.

The FDA approved the vaccination for people age 50 and over, and the CDC recommends it for anyone over age 60, but it is more effective if you get vaccinated between the ages of 50 and 60. In people receiving the vaccine in their 50s, it is 70-percent effective, but overall, it is only 51-percent effective. However, if you do get shingles and have been vaccinated, it is less severe, less painful and has a lower risk of complications. If you do not remember if you had chicken pox, you should be vaccinated. There is no harm in receiving it, and you cannot get shingles or chicken pox from the vaccine. Possible side effects include soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site. The vaccine is a “live” virus, so it is not indicated for people with a compromised immune system or on immunosuppressive therapy.

So, yes, I would recommend that you receive the vaccine as long as you are over age 50 and do not have a compromised immune system. There is only one shot; no booster is required at this time. A simple shot can save you from a lot of pain and other complications in the future. n

Calabasas Chamber of Commerce “It’s where we go, and what we do when we get there, that tells us who we are.” ~ Joyce Carol Oates

W

e make choices every day about where we go, sometimes big choices, like where to spend a vacation or buy a house. But mostly, we make small choices, like where to get our morning coffee or purchase groceries. These ordinary choices say something about who we are. But do these choices truly reflect our values? The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Calabasas are proud to host 170 Special Olympic athletes from Great Britain this coming July. Prior to the opening ceremonies, the athletes will be treated to three memorable days of recreation, entertainment and cultural exchange in our city -- a choice that truly reflects the spirit of our chamber and city. Recently, we were fortunate to have the delegation from Great Britain visit Calabasas. John Bingham, from the city, and Kirk Bell, from the chamber, rolled out the red carpet. Three delegates, two from Scotland and one from England, were given a private tour of the city. With each venue visited, their enthusiasm grew. Several times, the delegates mentioned how thrilled they were that they are bringing their athletes to Calabasas. Help us welcome and celebrate these special athletes. Volunteer, sponsor or support the chamber’s host-town activities by making a monetary donation. As “host town,” we will provide housing, dining and entertainment during the athletes’ stay, and the chamber will look to the business community and community for support. If you are interested in supporting the Calabasas Chamber Host Town, please contact Kirk Bell at kbell@riverflowwm.com. Visit calabasaschamber.com or cityofcalabasas.com for more information on how to get involved.

S

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Greg Grudt

upercar Sunday, America’s favorite weekly car show, has lined up quite a marque schedule for 2015.

Supercar Sunday, which is presented by The Auto Gallery, is hosted weekly at the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills. The show hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and it offers more automotive diversity than any other car show on the planet! It is not uncommon for the rarest of exotic cars, like a Pagani Huayra or Bugatti Veyron, to pull up, but there is also just about every classic and collector car and hot rod you have ever wished to see sitting in one parking lot.

By Dustin Troyan Photographed: Team SCS

The show, which has been going on for about 14 years, is absolutely free to attend. Supercar Sunday has turned into a community event, not just a car event. Who can be seen at Supercar Sunday? Celebrities, politicians, race car legends, auto designers and, of course, the enthusiasts.
