A NOTE FROM THE
When

tragic
events
occur in our own backyard like the helicopter going down in Calabasas with Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and seven other people, it gives us pause to reflect on our own lives, be grateful, and per haps make some changes. As we are still s e t t l i n g i n t o 2 0 2 0 , there is still time to make changes as suggested in our “Pay It Forward Challenge” and “What is your word of the year?” We celebrate delectable cuisine in this issue, our annual restaurant and dining issue, with our Grub and Gastronomy section highlighting the best places to dine around town. Satisfy your culinary cravings in epicurean style by finding incredible new restaurant ideas instead of always venturing to the same places. We are lucky to have so many fantastic restaurants in our midst offering everything from authentic Italian fare to delicious seafood to vegan cuisine. Open your taste buds to delicious mocktails, get creative with cauliflower, learn the benefits of matcha, master the key to decanting wine, and even find out how to dine out with dietary restrictions. Don’t miss Simply Irresistible for sweet treats and dessert favorites. Spring Break makes us want to plan a trip out of town. From downtown San Diego’s picturesque waterfront to its historic Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego sparkles 24 hours a day. This dynamic city offers a variety of stellar hotels, restaurants, and attractions to keep visitors returning for more. Lastly, congratulations to the team at Calabasas Style magazine

FIRST ANNUAL FIRE AND ICE BALL
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt
The staff of the newly renamed Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center Women’s Pavilion hosted their First Annual Fire and Ice Ball on December 13, 2019, at XL Restaurant in Agoura Hills. The event, organized by multitalented labor-and-delivery nurse Mana Arshadi and Dr. Neetu Sodhi of Bloom Obstetrics and Gynecology, was a huge success for the 115 guests in attendance. Dr. Tanya Altmann of Calabasas Pediatrics Wellness Center also shared in the planning and festivities. Hospital staff in attendance enjoyed the opportunity to change out of their usual scrubs and into formal, fire-red attire. LED fire dancers entertained the crowd as they enjoyed a photo booth, sweet treats from VLO Cake Pops, cuisine from Mejico Grill, and signature cocktails. All in attendance voted for next year’s theme that you won’t want to miss – disco ball. For more information,

14TH ANNUAL ROSS PORTER CELEBRITY GOLF CLASSIC
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Paul Lester
The Ross Porter Celebrity Golf Classic had its most successful golf tournament to date on Monday, November 4, at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. In its fourteenth year, the tournament grossed over $180,000 for Stillpoint Family Resources and its varied programs. Retired Dodger announcer Ross Porter and his many local sports celebrity friends came to golf and meet with golf amateurs who paid to play amongst the sports legends. Leading the list of familiar faces were Vin Scully, Tommy Lasorda, Mike Scioscia, Mickey Hatcher, Shawn Green, and many other former Dodger elites, as well as TV sports personality Chris “Geeter McGee. A sold-out field of golfers spent a beautiful day on the links golfing for a great cause, enjoying raffle and auction opportunities, a catered BBQ lunch on the course, and dinner to consummate the evening. GRAND OPENING OAKS CHRISTIAN’S RESIDENTIAL DORMS & IDEA LAB
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Debbie Vaccarello
February 11 was a special evening for Oaks Christian School (OCS) – one of the few national Christian secondary schools and the only school in the Conejo Valley to offer both a day and boarding option – as they celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of their state-ofthe-art residential boarding facility where 40 students have already made history as the very first residents. The dorm -- with three modern kitchens, a fitness room, lounge areas, computer study areas, and more -- will eventually house 68 international and domestic students. In addition to the dorms, OCS also celebrated their IDEA (innovation, design, engineering, and aeronautics) Lab – a 10,000-square-foot facility which houses the innovative Institute of Engineering and features physics, VEX robotics, computer science, rocketry lab aeronautics, and metal and wood fabrication classrooms. While work takes up a good deal of Laura and Billy’s time, they still manage to fuel their other passions, which include wine and foreign cars. “I love wine and traveling to amazing vineyards across the world,” notes Billy. “My relationship with Ferrari started when I was just 18 years old. I became founder, then president, of the Ferrari Owners Club in Mexico. I established close ties with such top Ferrari business icons as Lucca Di Montezemolo, Jean Todt, and the unforgettable Formula One racecar driver, Michael Schumacher. I was truly honored to be part of Ferrari’s 60th anniversary, where I rode on the private Fiorano Circuit track in a fabulous Formula One racecar.” The couple’s proudest accomplishments are, of course, their two wonder ful children. Dali currently attends Louisville High School in Woodland Hills. She previously went to Alice C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas where she served as President of the Associated Student Body (ASB). Billy Jr. attended Bay Laurel Elementary, and now A.C. Stelle in Calabasas. When not studying or working out, Billy Jr. and his sister enjoy taking tennis lessons at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center. Family trips often include beaches, spas, and golf. One of their favorite vacation spots, Punta Cana, sits at the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, between the balmy Caribbean Sea and cooler Atlantic Ocean. The area offers everything the family loves, from championship golf courses and luxurious spas to sightseeing via yachts and helicopters and delightful local restaurants serving authentic island cuisine. Back home, they spend lots of quality time dining at some of their favorite hangouts, such as Toscanova in The Commons, XO Tequila Grill in The Village, and NOBU, Mr. Chow, and Mastro's in Malibu. The Solanos work together to balance home life, school, and careers. They do almost everything as a team, including travel, theater, restaurants, and events. This worldly family continues to inspire themselves and others to become the best they can be, surrounded by friends, family, and the community they love. n

Classic Chevy Show The 38th Annual Classic Chevy Show will be a huge success. Expected are over 250 show cars to be on display and a couple thousand spectators attending. The Classic Chevy Club of SoCal is one of the most energetic and passionate groups of car owners out there. The Club chose Rancho San Antonio Boys Town not only as their location, but as the beneficiary of the show. Proceeds are donated to Rancho San Antonio Boys Town in Chatsworth, which provides underprivileged youth with a safe home and learning environment. Over the last 12 years, the Club has donated over $200,000 to Rancho to help support the boys that reside there. This year, they are expected to donate around $25,000. The Club has a strong connection with Rancho and with Brother John, who runs the organization. The Club does its best to raise the bar each year and put on the best show possible. This year’s event will be huge with a variety of attractions and fundraisers, including a charity raffle, bake auction, silent auction, and LS Chevy Engine raffle, courtesy of Rydell Chevrolet and Vendor Midway. The top 50 show cars are awarded. The show is noted for having some of the best food around. The BBQ is organized, hosted, and prepared by the team at Boys Town and staffed with the boys that reside there. It is a five-star dining event, and everybody raves about the food. Hot Topics in Preventative
Aging
74
Calabasas Style
By Anna Guanche, MD, FAAD Board-Certified Celebrity Dermatologist Author, Seven Days to Sexy I am so excited to share a brief summary of what I have learned in researching this article! We are on the verge of living much longer, healthier lives. Yes, there are jade rollers and K beauty masks, questions about vitamin D levels, and pollution particles. There are tricks to making everything look better, smoother, tighter, and more youthful. However, there is something more that science has in store for us. A systemic answer to aging. This way our organs and brain and skin can remain youthful and vibrant much longer. If you are concerned about aging, you are not alone. The billionaires of the world are investing big in the future of longevity. Not just longevity, they say. Not just your lifespan but your “healthspan,” which is more important. What we want is a long, healthy, functional life. Calico, Juvenescence, and Unity Biotechnology are three examples of large companies dedicated to finding the holy grail. The great news is that they are making progress! The latest concepts of systemic and skin anti-aging are as follows. Senolytics: Literally, this is Latin for “breaking aging apart!” Senolytics are a class of drugs being studied for the purpose of reversing symptoms of aging. There are a number of drugs, some familiar and some unfamiliar, with the ability to reverse signs of aging in various creatures. Quercitin, which is in your Emergen-C packet, and Azithromycin, from your last Z-Pak, are the two most familiar ones. There are other antibiotics and some biologics that also affect aging pathways. Studies are being conducted at Harvard Medical School, Yale, Mayo Clinic, and University of Texas. The way these drugs work is to kill off senescent, or dying/dysfunctional cells, so that the exuberant healthy cells can predominate. It turns out that this can alleviate multiple age-related conditions, chronic diseases, geriatric syndromes, and frailty. Studies have shown that lifespan and healthspan increases are definitely possible in animals. This is promising news for all of us! Hypoglycemics: This means “low sugar” in Latin. Medicines and supplements that reduce blood sugar and therefore reduce insulin release have been shown to increase lifespan. It is possible that hypoglycemic drugs provide anti-aging benefits by reducing the effects of glycation of the tissues in the body. Glycation is the process by which sugar byproducts attach themselves to organs and vessels and skin and essentially harden them. This is a mild version of the complications that diabetic organs suffer. At any rate, low-carb diets, very low-calorie diets, and hypoglycemic drugs all prevent sugar spikes in the bloodstream and have all been shown to contribute to longevity. Metformin is the most widely prescribed oral hypoglycemic medication for type 2 diabetes worldwide. Metformin also slows down aging in model organisms and reduces the incidence of aging-related diseases such as neurodegenerative disease and cancer in humans. In spite of its widespread use, the mechanisms by which metformin slows aging remain largely unknown. Further, not all individuals prescribed metformin derive the same benefit and some develop side effects. There is more yet to be learned about this drug and how it works before it becomes mainstream, however we are on the path of discovery about sugar, glycation, and aging.
Young plasma transfusions: The lore about vampires may have been more than just horror stories. There appears be some signal in blood serum that tells cells how old they are and how old they should act. This was discovered in quite a macabre way when the blood supply of two rodents was connected and the older rat began to show signs of youthfulness, both external and internal. When the rodents were separated, their respective ages and appearances returned. This experiment is called parabiosis and has been reproduced in various institutions. The idea of blood transfusions to humans from young donors in order to reverse signs of aging was born from this. Whole blood transfusions are risky so young plasma transfusions are being studied. The company Ambrosia specializes in this but plasma transfusions have risks and the positive effects are difficult to measure. The hope is that we can isolate factors in plasma and blood that signal healthy cell proliferation so that we can effect anti-aging parabiosis-like results without transfusions. Stem cells: Stem-cell therapy is somewhat old news, however we must keep in mind that due to U.S. regulations, the full gamut of possibilities with regards to anti-aging is not being explored here. Sites in Panama and Chile and various other countries where regulations are not as strict are currently conducting treatments and studies. Patients who travel for these treatments report a feeling of well-being and a decrease in aches and pains all over the body. There is an ocean of knowledge still to be discovered about stem cells and how we can harness them. It is important to note that stem cells with different genetic content than your own will not function in your body. Your immune system is designed to seek out and kill foreign cells. However, there are some great strides being made using one’s own stem cells. It is important to note that adding cells to the body could eventually lead to a big load of senescent cells later on. These could possibly “turn” on you and signal accelerated aging. Regardless, science is moving us toward a better understanding so these questions will be elucidated soon. My joy is to make people look and feel better. Most of the time, looking “better” correlates with looking younger. After years of practice, I have become adept at ridding people of wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels, and skin cancers and unwanted growths that show up, as well as tightening and fir ming loose skin. What is exciting is to realize that there is other very advanced experimentation going on to help prevent and reverse aging of the entire body, inside and out. Until these experimental concepts come to fruition, I am here for you. Take heart! I always say, “One day, age won’t matter.” n

Fillers replace lost volume to fill hollows and soften wrinkles and folds. Different fillers have unique properties. Thicker fillers are best for lifting cheeks while thinner ones are more suited for treating fine lines, such as those around the mouth.
Are lasers good for brown spots? Lasers are great for reducing red and brown discoloration and for reducing fine lines and scars. An IPL (intense pulsed light) is excellent for sun spots and dilated blood vessels (red and brown discoloration). Performed as a series of monthly treatments, IPLs get results without downtime. They can be combined with other lasers for extra power to treat stubborn dilated capillaries.
How can we tighten our skin? Thermage and Ultherapy are laser-like devices that heat collagen within the skin. Science has shown that heating collagen to a certain temperature leads to tightening and new collagen formation. The advantage of these devices is that there is no downtime or recovery. AHCCC TURNS 20 On the evening of Thursday, December 12, members of our community gathered for an evening of celebration as the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center celebrated its 20year anniversary of serving the community at its beautiful facility. Light refreshments and food were served to all in attendance, courtesy of local favorites including Carrara Pastries, Brent’s Deli, and T ifa Chocolate and Gelato. The first 200 attendees received free gifts, and everyone in attendance enjoyed giveaways throughout the evening.

LEE GOLDBERG HOSTS LAUNCH PARTY AND BOOK SIGNING FOR LOST HILLS New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg of Calabasas invited crime novel enthusiasts and members of the community to celebrate the release of his break-out mystery novel Lost Hills at the Calabasas Library on January 21. The author discussed his latest release with Emmy Award-winning writer/producer of hit TV series M*A*S*H and Cheers, Ken Levine. He concluded the evening by meeting fans of his work and signing copies of his book. Goldberg’s new series is set in his hometown – our very own Calabasas. The story’s exhilarating climax takes place during a wildfire that rages through the Santa Monica Mountains which was fictional when Goldberg wrote the book but became a reality when the Woolsey Fire swept through our community. The memorable disaster forced Lee and many others to evacuate their homes. Lost Hills is available for purchase at local retailers and on Amazon.

I am worried about the coronavirus; can you give me more information? Coronaviruses are from a large family of respiratory viruses that cause an upper-respiratory infection. A new coronavirus — called the 2019 Novel Coronavirus
(2019-nCoV) — is said to be the cause of this outbreak in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. It is spread through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. In the U.S., the flu is a much greater concern. As of January 31, there have been over 19 million cases, 180,000 hospitalizations, and 10,000 deaths in the U.S. In California alone, 211 people died from the flu between October and January, and 37 of them were under the age of 50! In comparison, there have been 259 deaths from coronavirus worldwide through January 31. The good news is that prevention is the same for both flu and coronavirus, except that no vaccine exists for coronavirus…yet. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people that are sick. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw it in the trash. • Clean and disinfect touched objects and surfaces frequently.

REENACTMENT REALITY PARTY FOR PARENTS SHINES A LIGHT ON UNDERAGE DRINKING
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Mariah Green
On Saturday, February 8, BRITE Youth -- in collaboration with community partners, including LVUSD, Los Angeles County Sheriffs, and the City of Agoura Hills -- hosted a Reality Party for Parents at a private local home. At the adult-only event, participants toured the home set up to portray a teen party with volunteer youth actors voicing concerns expressed by local teens and young adults. Targeted toward youth (ages 12 to 25), parents, and the broader community, the Reality Party included the 30-minute simulation of the underage teen party followed by a 30-minute debrief and discussion with the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department. The main goal of these parties is to help parents understand the current and local culture in ways that will help them have more relevant and meaningful discussions with their kids. How does the staff at Atrium Topanga educate the public on the benefits and most effective ways to use cannabis? Our staff educates the public in multiple ways. 1. We find the method of cannabis usage that might suit the customer best. This usually depends on what the person is trying to relieve. It also depends on pace and time it takes to feel the effects, whether it be 15 minutes or one hour. 2.
The staff educates the public on vapes. A lot of
people are worried about vitamin E acetate inside vapes. This won’t happen in the vape cartridges at Atrium as all cartridges come from an approved, certified vendor with a valid license that must go through the California metric system. This system regulates everything at the store and makes sure every product has a batch number so it can be tracked from seed to sale. From the moment the seed is planted in the ground to the moment it’s sold to the customer, it can be tracked. 3. We’ve held multiple education seminars with the elderly community to explain the values and benefits of cannabis. 4. We also teamed up with a pet adoption nonprofit agency to educate the community on how cannabis can help pets as well. In addition, we were successful in finding homes for four foster puppies.
What sets Atrium apart from other legal dispensaries? We offer one-on-one service to help customers find the right product for their cannabis needs and leave satisfied. All of our staff members are knowledgeable in every area of cannabis, from the CBD realm of tinctures, topicals, and suppositories to edibles, tablinguals, and capsules. This includes the wax from rosins, resins, badders, budders, and shatters. It also includes the variation of flowers that we have from outdoor to greenhouse and from mixlight to indoor flower. Unlike any other shop, we have 2,500 product options. We have one of the biggest varieties of products in the state, if not the country. Atrium is also known for its daily deals. Every day of the week, we offer a buy-one-get-one product. n 818.810.7379 atriumtopanga.com IG: atrium_topanga

Some people believe that simply swirling the wine around your glass enables sufficient aeration. Others, however, find that most wines, except perhaps older Burgundy wines, should first be decanted.
The fine art of decanting Decanters come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from sleek to fancy. Follow a few simple steps to separate the sediment from the wine.
Once you’ve poured the wine into a special decanter or glass, how long you should wait before drinking becomes a matter of taste. Allow enough time for the wine to achieve full flavor, but not so long that it begins to fade. An older wine may require less time, around a half hour or so. A newer, more full-bodied red or white wine can breathe for an hour or even longer. Just be careful not to let it aerate too long or it could oxidize and taste unpleasant and bitter.

Mocktails Not just for kids anymore!
By Gayle Barnes and Lori Berezin What could be better than a fruity pomegranate martini? Perhaps, an even healthier mocktail—“mock” plus “cocktail”—without any vodka might do the trick. Mocktails seem to be gaining popularity at bars and restaurants this year beyond “Dry January,” when people typically recover from the holidays by going alcohol-free. Mocktails simply taste too delicious to confine to just one month. Those sweet childhood classics, Shirley Temple, made from grenadine, lemon-lime soda, and ginger ale, and Roy Rogers, with cherry cola, grenadine, and pomegranate syrup, are even making a comeback for grown-ups. And who can forget the colorful tequila sunrise cocktails of our youth? Now, you can take a sip of paradise without the tequila for a virgin sunrise that makes waking up so much easier.
Don’t worry, be happy Fueled by our desire for healthier alternatives, the mocktail utilizes exotic flavors and superfoods, such as coco-

nut, turmeric, and fizzy kombucha. Mocktail drinkers prefer an added boost or relaxation to a hangover. We’re using more herbs, such as ashwagandha, which may assist brain function and lower cortisol and blood sugar, along with ginger, cinnamon, and fragrant rosemary. One popular mocktail called Anima Mundi’s Euphoria Elixir combines guarana seeds; yohimbe bark; Catuaba bark; muira puama; hibiscus flower; damiana leaf, considered an aphrodisiac; schizandra berries; Goji berries; rose petals; and night-blooming jasmine to help chase those blues away.
The year of the mocktail Hard seltzers with only 5% alcohol and alternatives with even less continue to trend. Fruit—such as sweetly tart Meyer lemons; prickly pear, rich in antioxidants, carotenoids, and essential fatty acids; blood-pressure-reducing hibiscus; exotic yuzu, a grapefruit; and mandarin oranges—continues to find its way into our beverages this year. From colorful red beets and vinegar shrubs that improve digestion to health-boosting kombucha and green matcha, 2020 promises to be the year of the mocktail. n

Pearl District Restaurant & Bar in Sherman Oaks and Westlake Village has helped elevate the local dining scene for the past five years. A collaboration between Owner Peyman Afshar and Executive Chef Richard DeMane, Pearl District offers an eclectic menu sourcing delectable items from across the globe and across town from local farms. This casual yet elegant restaurant has been serving satisfied diners from Westlake Village and the surrounding neighborhoods since 2015. Its contemporary American cuisine combines distinctive flavors from Asia and North Africa with a range of proteins from such faraway lands as Australia and New Zealand. Two local favorites—the braised shorts ribs with Asian mustard potato puree, port-ginger-miso sauce, scallions, and toasted

menu since opening day. After your first bite of that delicate fish surrounded by roasted grape tomatoes, capers, zucchini, and roasted fingerling potatoes, you’ll immediately understand why. You can also tempt your palate with such mouthwatering appetizers as sautéed wild mushrooms served amidst soft Parmesan polenta and white truffle sauce, topped with chives and micro basil. The creamy dish is richly warming on a cool night. Or try the popular heirloom tomato stack for something a bit lighter. Ever wondered what a perfect six-minute egg tastes like? Enjoy one atop baby arugula, crispy Parma prosciutto, pecorino cheese, and sugar plum tomatoes sprinkled with sherry vinaigrette. For a little surf, reel in lightly breaded salt-and-pepper shrimp, lobster tempura, or spicy tuna tartare. Meat lovers can satisfy their cravings with the grilled New Zealand venison with Szechuan hoisin sauce or shredded six-hour braised beef. The brined and
grilled pork chop and Angus “center cut” filet mignon with brandy green peppercorn sauce are also exquisite. The industrial chic décor—with its subdued lighting and grey walls adorned with oversized mirrors and windows— contrasts the delicate flavors of the menu. Owner Afshar, who opened his first restaurant in Portland, Oregon, named his establishment after one of his favorite neighborhoods, Portland’s artsy Pearl District. A large black-andwhite map mounted on the wall pays homage. Peyman and Chef DeMane owned several other Southern California restaurants, including the former Leila’s Restaurant & Bar in nearby Oak Park, which served the community for over 15 years. The duo’s latest venture, Pearl District’s sister restaurant, sporting the same name, opened last year along lively Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. Both spots offer locals a chance to bump into friends or simply enjoy a drink at their long bar. “Our beers are local favorites, including a variety of craft beers,” notes General Manager Erick Lumley. The wine list runs even longer than the bar. The Manhattan, combining Bulleit rye, Carpano Antica, made by the company that invented vermouth, and chocolate bitters, is aged for six weeks in oak barrels. Other cocktails, with names such as Purple Rain, Winterberry Smash, and Breaking Bad, are also unique. For those searching for something sweet, a variety of ports, sweet wines, and decadent desserts are available. Try the crème caramel or duet of sorbet for a gluten-free treat. Or go over the top with bittersweet chocolate bread pudding or a wonder bar, made with a crisp shortbread crust, peanut butter-chocolate bourbon ganache, caramel-peanut topping, and salted caramel ice cream. It’s wunderbar! Pearl District’s wait staff and host are equally wonderful. “We treat all our customers like guests in our homes with a professional and friendly attitude,” explains Afshar. Diners even receive a complimentary dessert on their birthdays and anniversaries. Plus, there’s a private room in the back that serves parties of up to 18 people if you have a large group. Pearl District is open seven nights a week from 5:00 p.m. Consider this shining jewel in Sherman Oaks and Westlake Village for your next night out, company dinner, or special celebration. n 982 S. Porsche Corral Days at Supercar Sunday
By Dustin Troyan Photography by Tadeh Davoudi
Porsche Corral Days at Supercar Sunday are incredible because you never know who or what type of cars will turn up. That is something that Supercar Sunday is known for as well—diversity. This past Porsche Corral was no different. When we got word from Bisi Ezerioha of Bisimoto Engineering that he wanted to share one of his latest creations, we were hugely excited. It was not the first time Bisi attended Supercar Sunday, and we hope it will not be his last. Bisi was very kind to share his Bisimoto Porsche 935 K3 Electric race car with Supercar Sunday. The car makes 635hp, and yes, it is indeed all electric. Needless to say, it was the car of the day‌perhaps, the year! The attendees went wild over the all-electric Porsche race car, and Bisi was equally excited to share and spend time answering questions for hours. It was awesome! Thank you, Bisi! Porsche Corral Day was a huge success with some of the rarest Porches on display as well as daily drivers and track cars. From air-cooled to turbos and RS Models, if Porsche made it, there was an example of it at Supercar Sunday. Not to get off topic, but it was a hugely successful morning with every type of other make and model on display as well. Hot rods, classics, imports, European, and just about everything else that can drive in, did drive in. It was fantastic! Supercar Sunday is a weekly event presented by Keyescars.com and Porsche Woodland Hills. The event is every Sunday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills. n

For most teens, it’s not about the money. Not yet anyway. It’s more about what the money can get them – entertainment, clothes, electronics, cars. Money, no matter its source, is simply the means for what is important at this very moment. This impulsive situation presents an opportunity to tur n these teen expenditures into teen motivators for lear ning about budgeting, savings, investing, and smart financial management. Teens have a stake in the family’s financial picture, so it is important to communicate to them the family’s goals, especially as these goals relate to their impulsive desires. It doesn’t necessarily mean that what they have been enjoying will suddenly stop. They simply need to become more accountable for their expenditures and begin to gain a sense of satisfaction from smart financial management. Having a participatory role in the family budget is an important step in teens’ development. • Have teens set their own goals and priorities. It’s a good time to start them with a financial journal for budgeting and record keeping. Perhaps an APP or a spreadsheet may work better for some teens. Get them to distinguish between needs and wants and then prioritize.
174
Calabasas Style
(savingforcollege.com) • Have teens experience saving with specific, small home projects. If they understand that their wants will need to be financed from their savings, they will see the value in it. You can encourage their saving habits by applying a “match” to their savings, much like an employer match to a 401(k) plan. • Show teens how they can become wealthy on their own. Teens have aspirations and dreams and, given the chance, will share them with you. Show your teens how they can become wealthy by the age of 40 by saving just $250 to $500 a month. Show them how inflation will impact this goal. Teens are adults in training and, given the opportunity, will demonstrate increasing amounts of responsibility and a penchant for smart financial management. Certainly, they can be motivated by their own wants and needs, however, when they begin to see the vital role they play as part of the family financial picture, they may surprise you and exceed your expectations. n MD Wealth Partners, Inc.: A personal wealth enhancement boutique for select clients. mark@mdwealthpartners.com. mdwealthpartners.com. 805.402.8642.
