note from the

r o t i Ed

I

can’t believe that summer is right around the corner! It feels like just yesterday that I was planning family trips with the kids over winter break. The thought of having them home for almost three months is lovely but overwhelming. I can’t bear to hear the sounds of “Mom, I’m bored!” Therefore, in order to avoid having to become a one-stop shop for entertainment, I have some fabulous resources at hand and am elated to share with you some of the best and local summer camps, schools and activities for our kids.

Also, one of my favorite summertime traditions is spending more time with the family around the table, and one of the best local spots to dine is the Blu Jam Cafe. The Blu Jam Cafe is filled with mouth-watering and organic meals to help keep everyone in the family happy, so be sure to check it out. You can also enjoy the exquisite charm of the homes and neighborhoods in the greater Calabasas area, which stands out as an unparalleled experience. The Home section of this issue gives you a great opportunity to learn about some of our readers’ “Favorite Spaces,” along with how local interior designers, businesses and realtors can help you create your own idyllic home in town. We were honored to sit down with Global Source Lighting, Westside Tile and Stone, and Pacific Patio to gain insight on how to create the perfect atmosphere both inside and outside our homes. While we want our homes to look amazing, we also want to feel our best, which is why, with the help of local celebrity fashion stylist Julie Waldorf, we are revealing the seasons’ greatest trends. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and adventurous summer! Irene Marshall, Editor stylepublishing@gmail.com calabasasstyle.com facebook.com/CalabasasStyle

JulieWALDORF and family

lead a stylish life in Calabasas

R

enowned fashion stylist Julie Waldorf, son Dylan, 12, and daughter Sienna, 8, moved to Calabasas in 2012 to be closer to Viewpoint School. With its strong academics and exceptional student body, the school has been an excellent match for the family for the past seven years, providing both an unparalleled education as well as countless friends for both Julie and the kids.

Julie, Dylan and Sienna love the small-town feel of Calabasas, which Julie describes as a “family-friendly, safe and beautiful place to live.” All three enjoy frequenting local restaurants, like Planet Sushi, Pedalers Fork, Toscanova and Le Pain Quotidien. They can often be found walking or riding their scooters to The Commons. “A friend of mine told me about the homes on the lake, next to the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center. It seemed like the perfect place to move to because Dylan is a passionate and

18 Calabasas Style

talented tennis player, highly ranked in the state of California,” says Julie. “He travels for tennis tournaments on weekends and practices at the Tennis and Swim Center weekly.” They love the fantastic tennis pros and great courts within walking distance to the family’s home. Dylan, who is an all-around athletic enthusiast and good student, hopes to play college tennis and possibly be a professional tennis player, like his inspirations, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Daughter Sienna, in second grade at Viewpoint, loves dance, art, animals and, like her mom, is a fashionista. Julie adds, “Sienna is a sweet, smart, fun and beautiful girl and a natural athlete as well. She’s taking Aerial Silks at Dance Dimensions in Woodland Hills as well as acting with Ellen Moreno at the Agoura Theatre. On top of all that…she’s a Brownie in Girl Scouts!” And both kids like to spend time with their great dad, Francisco Martin, and their wonderful sister, Sahara, who live close by in the Valley.

Julie has given back to the Viewpoint community by producing, directing and styling the school’s fashion show fundraiser for the past three years. The first year, the show at Sherwood Country Club featured clothes from Nicole Miller and professional models. The second and third years that Julie produced the show, she coordinated fashions from M.Fredric and Australian athletic wear designer Lorna Jane, casting Viewpoint moms on the runway. The stylist found her fashion calling at a young age. At just 12, the Brentwood native recalls, “I had shopped at every children’s boutique between Beverly Hills to Santa Monica in search of the perfect Bat Mitzvah dress. When I couldn’t find anything I loved, my very stylish mom took me to pick out a gorgeous fabric and I designed a dress which was then custom made. It was a blush color with sheer sleeves, fully back in fashion today!” During her tenth-grade year at Windward School, a college counselor suggested Julie study fashion design in Paris after graduation. It was a life-changing moment for this talented teen who went on to spend an exciting year in the world’s fashion capital before returning to earn a B.A. in fashion merchandising and design from the American College in Westwood. For years, Julie Waldorf has held a well-deserved reputation as the go-to stylist for celebrity clients and media, working on numerous television shows, commercials and editorials, from E! Entertainment and FOX Networks to Vogue, GQ and PEOPLE Magazine. Julie has styled for the Oscars and has worked with legendary fashion photographers, including Nigel Parry and Herb Ritts. She brings her fashion savvy closer to home with her Fashion Trend Report for Calabasas Style magazine.” It’s been an exciting career with so many entertaining memories. There was never a career plan B,” adds the renowned stylist. Julie continues to bring her personal style and exceptional taste to her many clients, curating wardrobes that are sophisticated and distinctive, yet always reflective of each client’s personal style. Sought after for her expertise, she is frequently retained by leading law firms, including Wasser, Cooperman & Carter and O’Melveny & Myers, providing testimony for high-profile child support cases, where Julie determines the appropriate clothing budget for a child of a highincome family. Where does the fashionable family shop close to home? Julie says she loves Intermix in Westlake and Lululemon and the Beauty Collection in The Commons. “I love to shop at M.Fredric with my kids. There’s something for all of us, and we always have fun!” n Kids clothing from M.Fredric. Julie’s top by Rebecca Taylor, skirt by Alice + Olivia, shoes by rag and bone, jewelry from Intermix. Glo Hair Salon by Gloria and Gena. Makeup by Ana at Mac. Vampire Facial THE

AKA Platelet Rich Plasma with Microneedling

By Anna D Guanche, MD Bella Skin Institute

D

id you know that your own blood platelets and plasma could get you looking 10 years younger? There’s a new kind of cosmetic procedure available, and it doesn’t require injecting any acids, fat or toxins into your body, not that I have anything against acids, fats or toxins! The main ingredient in this wrinkle-removing procedure is your own blood. It is the latest in our armamentarium for cosmetic treatment of volume loss, crepey skin under the eyes and wrinkles in the face, hands and neck.

blast (collagen) growth factor; insulin-like growth factor 1 and 2; epidermal (skin) growth factor; keratinocyte (skin cell) growth factor; and connective tissue (collagen) growth factor. These factors, when found outside of the bloodstream and in the tissues, initiate a healing cascade. Healing mainly involves activation of collagen, which is our goal in this case. Production of new collagen in the dermis (or hide) of the skin is stimulated by the injections, and new collagen and fresh keratinocytes (skin cells) in the epidermis are stimulated by the surface application of PRP via microneedling.

The process was made infamous by the fact that Kim Kardashian had it done on her show. Named the “Vampire Facelift” by some, it employs your own serum and is otherwise known as platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. It turns out it has been around for over 10 years in orthopedic literature and is used to promote healing after surgery. Now, we have learned to use collagen-stimulating PRP to enhance the smoothness, texture and quality of the skin.

Microneedling sounds macabre but, by most patient accounts, hurts less than microdermabrasion with the help of a topical anesthetic. Automated microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy, or CIT) is an innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines and acne scars and improving the skin’s overall appearance.

It is not as much a lifting procedure as a skin rejuvenating procedure. Your own serum with growth factors, injected just under the skin’s surface, stimulates collagen production by activating a healing response. The good news is that the risk of adverse reactions or an “overdone look” are slim to none. This procedure, when coupled with microneedling, allows for PRP to rejuvenate the surface layers of the skin through microscopic openings. As it turns out, PRP may also be coupled with various fillers, depending on the objectives of the patient. Platelet rich plasma, a concentrated source of platelets, contains and releases several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate healing of soft tissue. The components present in PRP include platelet-derived growth factor; transforming growth factor beta; fibro-

During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled microinjuries to the skin in order to naturally produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in improvement of the appearance of softer wrinkles. Automated microneedling also creates superficial micro-channels, which can be used with PRP to help improve the appearance of the epidermal layer of the skin. In our office, we use the Eclipse MicroPen™, which has sterile replaceable tips and allows for adjustable depth of treatment.

ing, we ask patients to avoid aspirin and ibuprofen and to avoid alcohol the night before. The results are gradual, with improvement in the injected area appearing over a three-week to five-week period. Treatments are spaced by three to four weeks, and a series of four treatments is recommended. With time, the results get better and better. This procedure must be done in the proper setting with the right equipment and post care. It is important to make sure the facial is conducted in a clean environment by a qualified dermatologist who knows what he or she is doing. Now, you too can enjoy the benefits of a Vampire Facial – without that pesky pallor. You will enjoy a rejuvenated glow with little downtime and a completely natural appearance. Any patient who wishes to reduce volume loss, fine lines and textural changes of the skin is suitable for this procedure. It also appeals to the patient who is looking for a natural approach to volumizing the face and treating or reducing fine lines. n The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice. Dr. Guanche is not a consultant for, nor receives consulting fees or compensation from, any of the product or device companies mentioned in this article.

The Vampire Facial (PRP and microneedling) procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes and has little downtime. Your skin may look abraded in areas where deep settings are used, but in most cases, it is clear within three days. Alternatively, PRP may be performed without microneedling, reducing downtime, unless bruising occurs. In order to minimize risk of bruis-

My Parents Don’t Know They Need

other’s Day and Father’s Day are fast approaching. Let’s take a look at what’s hot for mom and dad.

As we go to press, the Apple Watch is due to be released. If you like watches as a fashion statement like I do, you may not want an electronic watch, despite the fact that you can electronically change the face. It will, however, allow you to get text messages, emails and phone calls just like the futuristic Dick Tracy watches that came out 20-plus years ago. The catch is that you must have your iPhone within Bluetooth range for most of the functionality to work. The Apple Watch will range between approximately $400 and $17,000. That’s right, the gold version will set you back anywhere from $10,000 to $17,000. Frankly, if I were going to spend $17,000, I’d buy a second car instead. You know, one of those smart cars. For mom or dad, depending on who does the vacuuming in the house, check out the iRobot Roomba. It runs in the $400 price range and can navigate the floors by itself and clean your carpet while you watch TV. It will steer underneath couches, curtains and all types of furniture, all thanks to an electronic eye. Pretty cool device.

Tablet computers are always a great gift for anyone who is tech minded. They all work extremely well if you want to surf the web, watch a movie or play games. My personal favorite is the iPad, but there are quite a few options. The Acer Tablets are excellent, as is the very inexpensive Amazon Fire HDX. I personally recommend a bigger screen over a mini since it’ll be much easier to see, especially when watching a movie or TV.

If you are looking for ideas for the home, check out the Braun projecting clock. If you are a time freak, you can use this clock to project the time onto your wall. It can either work continuously or be triggered by a motion sensor. It runs around $105. The Aether Cone is a beautiful edition to your home décor. It’s a music player that thinks. It learns your preferences and creates a soundtrack for your listening pleasure. You can actually give it voice commands or press the buttons. You can request any song, artist, radio station or podcast. It comes in two colors and runs about $400; it’s expensive but both cool looking and very intuitive. The options are unlimited for both home and personal use this year as there are even affordable 3D printers for the home to choose from. You can make almost anything with them. Want to design your own food items that actually come out cooked? The 3D printers have you covered. Wild but true. If you are feeling generous and appreciate my tech columns, please feel free to pool together your funds and buy me that $17,000 Apple Watch. I can be flexible, too! Happy Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to all. See you on the radio. n Marc

Oscar Night Party

Hosted by Dr. Georgia Sarah Haddad Radfar By Elena RIchards The Oscars represent glamour, beauty and recognition of achievement. These are not the words that are often associated with the issue of domestic violence. Enter Safe Passage CEO Trish Steel and local Calabasas resident Dr. Georgia Sarah Haddad Radfar, who hosted an Oscar night party at her home. Friends of Dr. Haddad Radfar donated gently worn dresses to Safe Passage, whose mission is to compassionately transform the lives of abused women and their children by providing hope, opportunity and empowerment. Women who are currently in the Safe Passage program were invited to share the evening after receiving a transformative night of beauty at the Renewal Nail Bar, owned by local Calabasas resident Siv Cotton. From top to toe with pedicures, manicures, hair, make up, Oscar-party-worthy dresses, heels and clutches -- it was a night of smiles, beauty and celebrities. For more information on how you can help transform victims of domestic violence, go to safepassagelives.org.

MY FAVORITE SPACE TRACY BERKUS DEKEL: THE BEDROOM SUITE A spa retreat and bedroom package in one? What’s not to love? Tracy Berkus Dekel and her husband have taken the need for relaxation to the next level by creating a wonderful mini-retreat right in their own bedroom suite. “The main bedroom has a separate sitting area with a fireplace where I love to read. Then, there is a secret room off that room that leads us into the best part of the suite -- the massage and sauna room with a large Jacuzzi tub and steam shower in the bathroom. My husband and I have had many ‘Dekel Spa Days’ right at home,” confesses Tracy. The Dekel’s bedroom suite gives a whole new meaning to the idea of ‘home sweet home.’

STACEY FEINBERG: Home GYm The family that sweats together stays together, and that couldn’t be more true for Stacey Feinberg and her four children who are happy to share about their home gym in Hidden Hills. The gym includes cardio equipment upstairs and weight-training equipment downstairs. “My sons are basketball players who use the weights and plyometric equipment to increase fitness and jumping ability,” says Stacey. “My daughters are dancers who stretch at the ballet barre and practice routines in the mirrored dance area where I often follow barre class DVDs. There’s nothing more fun than when all of us are in there with the music blasting, sharing a natural fitness high.”

MY FAVORITE SPACE rayne GARBER: kitchen Rayne Garber, along with her husband and two boys, is thrilled to call The Oaks of Calabasas home. Garber and her family moved to Calabasas two years ago from Atlanta, and although these cities offer two distinctly different atmospheres, the lifestyle element that remains the same for Garber is her love of cooking and entertaining. Garber describes the kitchen as her favorite space in the home, “The layout is designed perfectly. I put a desk in as well so eventually the children can do homework while I’m cooking.” Acting as a melting pot for comfort and happiness, Garber defines the kitchen as the one area where both friends and family can come together and describes how the ceiling catches the backyard’s natural light and how this enhances the ambiance.

ELLIE HARTOONIAN: FORMAL DINING ROOM Residing in The Oaks of Calabasas with her husband and three children, Ellie Hartoonian proudly announces her formal dining room as her favorite space. “The dining room signifies a sense of togetherness and celebration with our friends and family. Our furniture, lighting and accessory finishes were all individually selected and carefully custom made for this room to bring together our perfect space, vibrant with colors and rich with finishes,” shares Hartoonian. With her love of entertaining at the core of her design inspiration, Hartoonian included old world, timeless colors and lighting with traditional pieces to act as a perfect complement to her European-inspired courtyard.

MY FAVORITE SPACE DEB SPELLMAN: OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM Looking forward to spending the upcoming summer nights under the stars, Deb Spellman and her family award the outdoor living room with the honor of being the most treasured part of their Hidden Hills home. Debra explains, “One of the benefits of having this outdoor living space includes having a place to go, unwind and just enjoy the serenity and beauty of the outdoors.” Additionally, having an outdoor patio makes for the perfect happy hour spot as it also acts as an outdoor tasting room for Bridle Trail Wines. “We have recently bottled our sixth vintage of Spellman Family Vineyards estategrown wine,” adds Debra.

ALLISON KANTER: DEN Allison and Mark Kanter built their home in The Oaks eight years ago. Special detail was given when the couple designed and furnished their den, which has become the heart of their home. Mark is a sports enthusiast who enjoys watching college football and golf in the den, and the family loves to gather there to relax and watch their favorite movies and TV shows together. The Kanters’ three children also love to invite their friends over to hang in the den and have a go with the leather massage recliner! The den is the most-used and loved space in their home, especially when it is filled with family and friends.

MY FAVORITE SPACE SARAH RADFAR: LIVING ROOM Bringing European influences back to the states, Sarah Radfar and her husband Dar have recreated their trip to Italy inside their The Oaks community residence. “15 years ago, my husband Dar and I were walking the streets of Venice, Italy, when we were captivated by the essence of Italian architecture and furniture. Our home is an Italian Village, with each room based on a different Italian city.” Sarah’s favorite room, the living room, pays homage to Venice, with custommade Marge Carson sofas made with Venetian scallop. The room continues to exude Italian tradition as the Radfars embody the beauty of Venice with the masquerade masks that Venice is so famous for.

Mona Abajian: BACKYARD A swim-up bar in your backyard? Now, that is tough to beat! Mona Abajian and her family are proud to call the backyard of their The Oaks residence their favorite space. After eight months of construction, the wait was worth it, as Mona praises, “Our backyard... has a beautiful view of the city. We added a zero-edge pool, a covered patio and a separate outdoor kitchen with a swim-up bar.” During the evening hours, the sparkling city lights create a majestic backdrop, which is ideal since the Abajians love sitting around their fire pit sipping wine and listening to music.

MY FAVORITE SPACE LAURA GOLDWASSER: MUSIC & GAME ROOM Transformation was all the trend at the Goldwasser’s Hidden Hills residence as Laura Goldwasser announces that the music and game room is the family’s number-one space in the home. “When it became clear that our son Sam was serious about playing piano, we not only needed to buy one but also needed to find a place to put it,” shares Laura. “What was an unused office was transformed into an entertaining space.” She explains that the entire Goldwasser Gang, which includes her husband, twin boys, daughter and dog, Snickers, all love to rally together in the game room to play pool and cards, dine and watch sports.

LIGIA HOLZMAN: BACKYARD Home is where the heart is, and that sentiment could not be truer for Ligia Holzman, who claims that her backyard in The Oaks of Calabasas is the perfect oasis. “My backyard makes my family feel like we are on vacation. The pool has a beach entry, a waterfall and a grotto. We also have a beautiful gazebo with a Batchelder fireplace that we gather around after a day of swimming,” reveals Holzman. With the summer months fast approaching, the backyard gives the Holzman family the ideal space to host parties with loved ones.

MY FAVORITE SPACE LINDA RAZNICK: PENNY ARCADE It’s a full house at the Raznick’s Hidden Hills estate as they share their home with three dogs and three horses! Adding a sense of whimsical charm to the home, Linda Raznick can’t help but gush about one of the most intricate rooms in her home -- the penny arcade. “With all the TLC and devotion that went into creating our one-of-a-kind antique turn-of-the-century penny arcade, the room is where we can go back in time and lose ourselves. After a bad day, it’s where we go to smile and are forever reminded of ‘the good ‘ole days’.” The arcade is truly an original work of art since the designer for the space is none other than Linda’s husband, Rob Raznick.

SARAH SMALL: SCREENING ROOM Who doesn’t love a great movie night in, right? Fans of hosting sporting events, award shows and movie nights, the Small family’s search for the perfect escape from their busy lives led to the conversion of their two-car garage in The Oaks of Calabasas into a screening room. “The space is quiet and cozy. We wanted a space that could work well for adults and children and be intimate for movies as well as accommodate large groups,” says Sara Small, who designed the space for her family. “The bar top and bench is key to the design, allowing for plenty of storage for snacks, blankets and a popcorn machine.”

MY FAVORITE SPACE TONI YAMIN: DRESSING ROOM As a fashion stylist since 1998, Toni Yamin is a busy woman who needs to pull herself together quickly and go! When she and her husband moved to Mountain View Estates 21 years ago, she converted a spare bedroom into an organized dressing room to house her fashion books, clothes, shoes, hats, purses and accessories. This space allows her to stay on top of fashion trends and surround herself with all things stylish. She draws creative energy from having a space that is all about her passion for fashion and also allows her to share this passion with the clients she personally styles.

REETU DUA: MASTER BEDROOM Turning her dreams into reality, designer and friend Cherryl Alan helped The Oaks’ resident Reetu Dua and her husband, Neil, transform their master suite into a room that the whole family can enjoy. “Our bedroom is a special place where Neil and I spend time together and delve into deep conversations, whether it be about life, work or the kids,” shares Reetu. The bedroom includes two bathrooms and two closets where Reetu and her husband combine their individualist natures with their desire to still be together. Reetu adds, ”On occasion, the kids ask to sleep with us and this provides us another opportunity to bond with our children.”

MY FAVORITE SPACE TERESA LITT: LIVING ROOM From the moment they walked into this 45-year-old California ranch near Calabasas Lake, Teresa and David Litt knew that this diamond in the rough would be their home. Maureen Fisher and Joan Vaccaro from Design In Real Life, a local interior design studio, were engaged to make renovations that included the kitchen, family room, living and dining areas. The living room is the social heart of their family, where their children play piano and games, and many celebrations are held. The Litt family also love to entertain and are delighted with the new flow of energy and comfort that their “new” home envelops.

LAUREN PLUTSKY: THE GREAT ROOM While indulging in family bike rides to the farmer’s market and stunning sunset dinners at Zin Bistro, the Plutsky family could not be happier to call the Majestic Oaks in Westlake Village home. Lauren Plutsky recounts that it is not so much about the room itself, but the whole ambiance of the great room that makes it her favored nook of the house. “I love the flow from my great room to the outside area where my family can cozy up on our leather sectional while enjoying the beautiful views of the mountains.” Lauren thanks Laguna Furnishings for creating such a perfect environment, “James and Mark had the patience, knowledge, taste and resources to bring my daughter, Melanie’s and my colors and style to life.”

OASIS IN THE DESERT Gardening During the California Drought By Beth Cone Kramer

T

hink of Southern California. What comes to mind? Often, the first images that pop into our heads are green lawns, sparkling swimming pools, and lush flowers. What we often forget is that Southern California is actually a desert. In these tough times of drought, we need to rethink our landscapes and water usage to utilize more drought-tolerant plants, groundcover, and flowers.

There are plenty of native flora that not only require less water, but also look perfectly at home in any front yard. Whether you are looking for a beautiful, native succulent for that hand-painted pot by the pool or rethinking your rolling green lawn in favor of more ecologically friendly groundcover, there are plenty of options for any decorating style. Step one is to find flowers and plants that require less water. Perennials bloom in spring and return every year. Red Buckwheat, Scarlet Larkspur, Coyote Mint, and Beach Suncups are all gorgeous perennials that will save you on irrigation costs. Additional varieties that require less water include: the California Fuchsia, Kangaroo Paw, Matilija Poppy, Mexican bush marigold, and the Mexican Tulip Poppy. Remember to choose plant species from climates similar to our own. To add a bit of true California style, choose succulents and cacti for your garden. Create a desert oasis with cacti of differing heights and colors lining your pool or patio. These desert friendly plants evolved to store water in arid climates with infrequent rain. Echeveria plants are also a popular way to add color to a landscape. Do you live in a hillside paradise with a view? It is important to plant effective groundcover to maintain your breathtaking vistas and prevent runoff or erosion. Get creative! Go online and check out your options. Say “goodbye” to waterguzzling, cookie-cutter lawns and “hello” to ecologically responsible originality. Find out how you can do your part to end our very serious drought. The change must start with you. Let us protect our paradise. Our local gardening center and landscape architects are great resources. Mastering the remodel:

THE ART OF KNOWING WHAT SHOULD STAY, WHAT SHOULD GO, AND HOW TO MAKE IT YOUR OWN By Tammy Randall wood, ASID

T

here is nothing more fun (for many of us) than the pursuit of creating the perfect nest. The longing to come home to a space that reflects our tastes and serves our needs is one of the most fundamental of desires. Most will agree that developing a space which allows us to express ourselves and make life run smoothly is a worthwhile endeavor. At the same time, our homes are the single largest investment most of us will ever make, so how we approach fixing up and feathering our nests can equate to serious business.

If you are a homeowner, then you know that furnishings are the icing on the cake of all that goes into creating and maintaining our living spaces. I write a lot about the icing, but today let’s talk about the cake! Remodeling an existing home to suit specific needs or simply updating it for investment consideration is something most of us will have to undertake at some point or another. The scale of a remodel can run a wide breadth -- from refreshing a few surfaces to the total reimagining of a property. Sometimes it’s apparent what goes and

what stays, but often things aren’t so clear. Budget and the condition of a home are key for making these decisions, of course, but what if a home has custom detailing that is solid and well-done but no longer current or desirable? This is where our aesthetic preferences can feel at odds with the property itself, and it can be helpful to draw a clear distinction between what might be your personal style and what might be appropriate in staying true to the architectural direction of the property. A good rule is to save your individual flair for furnishings, and think of the house as its own entity. Architectural design choices that are consistent with the style of the house itself serve to create the most authentic backdrop to set our personal style choices against, whatever they might be. These juxtapositions can be dazzling and frequently more compelling than if all choices are unilaterally tailored to our personal leanings. Think of how lovely a mid-century chrome and leather chair could look set against formal and beautifully painted raised paneling. Like a great marriage, both stay true to themselves and yet are brilliant together. With that said, the current trend in architecture towards the more simplified and sophisticated cannot be denied. Highly stylized Spanish Mediterraneans and Tudors are being replaced with streamlined versions of themselves. What I’ve been seeing (and loving) in SoCal is a quieting of the faux-theatrical trends of the late 90s and early 2000s -- they’re being rebooted to read “Clean California Sophisticated.”

58

Calabasas Style

According to USA.com, the median age of a house in Calabasas is 31-years-old. Often, detailing in homes from the 80s is quite rich, containing oodles of trimming that can seem almost garish to our newly acquired palate for tailored, clean lines. Admittedly, I almost always recommend that the cabinetry packages in our projects be replaced. New kitchen and bathroom cabinets can be critical to a suc-

cessful remodel since wear and tear and changing styles can quickly take a toll. But not everything has to go! Some expensive but dated details can be ever so slightly turned in a direction that results in a refreshed and utterly gorgeous reinterpretation. In many cases, elements like oak wall paneling, balustrades and parquet wood floors can be kept. Having these details professionally stripped, repainted and stained can save thousands in replacement costs, and the end result can sometimes be of higher quality than what you might purchase brand new. One of the architectural features I routinely recommend replacing in projects built before 1990 are the windows. Yes, these are big-ticket items, but updating for energy efficiency, safety and aesthetic appeal can have a massive impact on increasing the value and desirability of a home. Windows being installed in California now have strict new guidelines to comply with today’s more stringent codes, such as tempered glass that resists shattering in fires and UV coatings that prevent heat gain. The improved value a home can realize plus the savings in energy costs can often make the decision to upgrade an easier one.

think you’ll enjoy! There are two relatively new websites you should know about. Houzz.com is one of our favorites. It’s a website and online community dedicated to architecture, interior design and home improvement. Houzz has over 3 million high-quality photos to inspire users, and they can be handily assembled into idea books. It is also a great resource for finding professionals in every category, from contractors to closet providers.

as well as connect with the world’s most elite architects and designers. Homeowners know what they want and are more astute than ever with the help of these types of communities. This guide would not be complete without naming a few of our favorite local providers. For paint, I love Décor Paint and Wallcovering (decorcolor.com) in Thousand Oaks. They carry Benjamin Moore paint and are great at answering all your questions with wonderful customer service. Also in Thousand Oaks, my favorite carpeting and new wood-flooring source is Alpine Carpet One Floor & Home (alpinecarpetoneto.com). They carry an array of the best carpets, from affordable to high-end, with great customer service and impeccable installation. Agoura Sash & Door (agourasash.com) is terrific. They have everything from Milgard to Marvin, as well as the new specialty bi-fold window systems that I love designing indoor/ outdoor spaces with. And if you’re looking for truly unique architectural details, make a visit to Charme d’Antan (charmedantan. net) in historic Cornell. They import exceptional antique and reproduction limestone fountains, mantles and building elements from Europe. A visit there feels like time spent in Provence! Until next time, here’s to creating your own Noble Spaces! n

WARMING YOUR HEARTH at Encino AND Thousand Oaks Fireside and Design

B

ob Vartanian has one mission: to warm the hearth and hearts of homeowners by providing the most comprehensive fireside specialty stores in Southern California. Vartanian is the proud owner of four fireside and accessory stores, with locations in Encino, Glendale, Pasadena and Thousand Oaks. He recently remodeled the Encino and Thousand Oaks stores to present state-of-the-art showrooms with a variety of modern and traditional fireplaces. Each store provides customers with “one-stop shopping” for all of their fireplace and BBQ needs.

Vartanian opened his first store in Encino in 1988 and found instant success by offering customers an in-depth assortment of gas and wood-burning fireplaces, outdoor gas fireplaces and stoves and a complete line of charcoal, electric and gas BBQs. In 1997, he purchased Floyd S. Lee Fireplace in Pasadena – a hearth business that dates back to 1926. He then expanded to open a new location to service customers in the GlendaleBurbank area, and in 2010, he opened his fourth showroom in Thousand Oaks to serve homeowners in the Conejo Valley. Much of the company’s success can be attributed to the fact that customers love being able to see such a huge assortment of the best manufacturers’ products and brands all under one roof. Says Vartanian, “If a customer goes to a typical home center or big-box store, they’ll see just a small selection of traditional fireplaces, stoves and grills on a seasonal basis. When they come to any one of my four locations, they are amazed at the depth of unique and custom styles, brands and designs that are available year-round, with a team of knowledgeable staff. Most people have no idea about the new and innovative products that are on the market.” One reason behind the Vartanian’s success is that the majority of his employees have worked for the company for over 18 years and can offer customers a wealth of knowledge and information when choosing fireside products and accessories. “Customer satisfaction is always number one,” Vartanian emphasizes. “I tell my employees that, first, I want happy customers. I want to solve any problem they may have and take care of it that day.” The other big distinction between Vartanian’s company and your typical home center is that his company does the whole job -- from installation to framing to drywall and mantels to new construction and remodels. He and his staff work directly with homeowners and

62

designers and will visit each home or job site to see what kind of indoor or outdoor fireplace, stove, BBQ pit or island may need to be installed or redesigned. Says Vartanian, “I love going into customers’ homes to see what kind of fireplaces they have and what we can do to help them. Because we specialize in this area of home design, we can offer so many great ideas and options. We not only know what to do, we love what we do – and that is the key to securing satisfied customers as well as referrals.” This kind of expertise is a rare commodity and is the reason that the company does not sell their products online. There is an intrinsic value to working directly with stores specializing in fireplaces and having a staff of experts who can explain the differences in the products. Says Vartanian, “There is no way that that this type of knowledge can be purchased online.” The company also specializes in converting wood-burning fireplaces to gas log fireplaces, which will soon be a requirement in California. This requires running a gas line to the fireplace and installing simulated, but authenticlooking logs; sparkling crystals, for a modern look; different-shaped ceramic rocks; or a variety of other selections best suited for the customer’s lifestyle. This eliminates the problems and costs of purchasing wood, having smoke in the home and cleaning the fireplace. Homeowners can experience the warmth and beauty that today’s fireplaces have to offer with remote access. In addition to fireplaces, fire pits, outdoor stoves and BBQs, the company offers a huge assortment of other products, including fireside tool sets, gas logs, fire glass, outdoor heaters, custom glass screens, chimney components and accessories, pizza ovens and mailboxes. From new fireplace installation to fireplace upgrades to creating that unique “fire-onice” look, they have the knowledge and experience to fulfill your dreams of having a beautiful fireplace in your home. Texture, Patterns & COLOR in Tiles The greatest trends in the tile industry are always changing depending on the shift of colors being used in products, as well as the type of materials adopted in the latest styles and designs. Westside Tile and Stone, Inc., is proud to offer the newest design styles in both of their showrooms. The bathroom and kitchen trends in today’s marketplace revolve around the use of textures, patterns and vibrant colors, along with different materials in mosaics. Implementing the use of textures on floor and wall applications fashions one of the most sought-after looks used to create an allure of fabric and make a statement or wall accent. The Artistic Tile Piatti is a three-dimensional carved mosaic, inspired by the jeweler’s art of faceting stones. The polished Calacatta Marble used emphasizes the texture through the warm colors found throughout the popular white marble. Patterns found in tiles have become more prominent in their designs and usage as shown with the Hydraulic Porcelain installation. The beautifully put-together pattern delivers the Moroccan encaustic cement tile in a low maintenance and durable porcelain tile format. The whimsical yet bold look of these patterned tiles is finding its home in both residential and commercial floorings. Bold and vibrant colors have slowly made their way into our homes through not only mosaic tiles, but with the latest selections of floor tiles. The kauri porcelain collection is a representation of ancient kauri wood found only in New Zealand, with extraordinary grain qualities and vibrant colors. The look of petrified wood is exemplified through the glazed, polished porcelain and looks stunning in any environment. The use of different materials in mosaics has transformed the application and the overall look and feel of mosaics. The introduction of waterjet technology gives usages to glass, natural stone and mother of pearl river shell in an abundant number of mosaics. The enhanced look of these mosaics creates intricate patterns and shapes. n Westside Tile & Stone 7631 Canoga Ave. Canoga Park 818.704.9222 westsidetile.com

Happily, the elegant, forward-looking Horizons at Calabasas has the same vision and made it a reality in one of the most exciting new 55-plus luxury apartment concepts in Southern California. We provide complimentary handyman services to help residents move in with ease. We also offer to complimentary housekeeping, concierge services and activities, like monthly catered dinners and dance classes so that neighbors get to know each other. There’s something magical that happens when you build your community one neighbor at a time. Aside from the unique living experience, Horizons’ quality is top tier all the way. Attention to such seemingly small details as showerheads and fixtures puts Horizons on a completely new level in retirement

luxury living. In step with the luxury resort concept, Horizons offers complimentary housekeeping services once a month and helps residents find every kind of resource they might need, from dog walking to medical care. Horizons at Calabasas is located at the end of a cul-de-sac in the scenic hills of Calabasas. The community close to the 101 freeway off of the Lost Hills exit and is only 15 minutes away from the Malibu coast. The picturesque 60-unit community with direct access to nearby hiking trails, includes luxurious amenities such as a spa, pool, gym, game-filled media room, outdoor patio with a fire pit and water fountain, outdoor TV next to the BBQ area and lovely common room for easy socializing. The fully monitored community also has underground parking and storage areas. Moving into a smaller space can be challenging so Horizons brought together a team of professionals to put on a monthly downsizing seminar open to the public, called Futuresizing, to help educate and assist in the process. One lady said that she loved having her grandkids over for dinner but that the apartment she was considering was too small. Once she saw the common room, with the full kitchen and huge dining area, she realized that at Horizons, she could have the best of both worlds. n Debbie Nadon Community Manager Horizons at Calabasas thehorizons@cirrusami.com

Q.

Why have I seen so much about solar in the last three years? One of the biggest increases in solar is due to two incentives: the California Solar Initiative rebate and the federal tax credit. The California rebate is no longer available, however the federal tax credit will be in effect until 2016, and it covers 30 percent of the cost of the solar system. On average, people can save over $6000 on home solar installation. That said, utility rates have increased significantly in the last three years, so many homeowners are going solar to save drastically on their electric bills.

A.

The Truth About

Residential

solar Is It Worth It?

Do solar panels have to go on the front of my home? Solar requires direct sunlight, so as long as your roof faces southeast, south, southwest or directly west, you can put the panels on your roof and it will be very effective. The majority of solar installations are not on the front of homes. We install on the side of the roof or the back of the roof, and we even do ground mounts on open land.

What is the PACE or Hero Program? PACE or sometimes called “Hero Programs” are property accessed clean energy tools that allows your Solar system to be financed through your property taxes over 10, 15, or 20 years. It’s a innovating partnership between your local government and private financing that allows you to receive upfront funding for energy efficiency. It allows you to own your system and pay for it over time at a much lower rate lower than your existing power bill. The best part is that it that No Credit Score is required, it is tax deductible and only needs to paid twice a year. What is this zero-down solar lease I hear about all the time? We offer the Sunrun zero-down PPA or lease. People send us their 12-month SCE usage, and we design a solar system that offsets most of their power bill. Homeowners are leasing the system for 20 years at a cost of power that is much less expensive. There’s no money down, and you can save 20 to 40 percent of your bill. If you sell your home, the contract gets transferred to the new owners. All of the monitoring and maintenance and the production guarantee are Sunrun’s responsibility. The homeowner reaps the rewards.

What about ownership of my system? About 50 percent of our clients do opt for purchasing over leasing. We offer 10, 12 and 20-year financing from three different banks. Have solar costs gone down at all in the last five years? Yes. A solar panel in 2008 cost $900 compared to the $250 per panel that people are paying now. Installation costs have also been streamlined, resulting in much lower costs. The average solar system costs $4.00 to $4.50 per watt these days. The average return on investment is three to five years, unless you lease or finance the system, which shows immediate return.

What type of warranty is offered? I don’t need another problem in my life! Solar panels come with a 25-year warranty, and workmanship is warranted for 10 years. Solar panels are designed to continue working for 30 years with minor degradation.

MITCH KATZ President - CEO Solar Universe

If I wait to install solar, will it get less expensive? Not necessarily. Remember, the federal tax credit of 30 percent is ending in 2016, and we don’t think it will be extended. Most people want to lock in that average tax credit of $6000 off the average system. n

More Questions: Solar Universe has installed more than 2000 residential solar systems and has done hundreds of commercial installations. Money on the Table for Craig L. Israelsen, Ph.D.

I

Retirement

t happens to everybody. After spending your working years accumulating money, you face a rude awakening in retirement when that growth is replaced by withdrawal. This drawdown phase might be described as the relentless cracking of the retirement nest egg.

The best performing asset class of last year may create investor “envy,” which can lead to “performance chasing” -- which consists of reallocating all or a portion of their portfolio to last year’s winning asset class or strategy. Such an approach is nonsense -but so are a lot of things we humans do.

Analyzing how asset allocation affects portfolio durability during retirement is a big issue. But there is no perfect retirement portfolio. Every investment faces some type of risk, including equity volatility risk, interest rate risk, inflation risk and currency risk. The key is to build a portfolio that addresses each unique risk while maintaining adequate exposure to needed portfolio growth, especially during the drawdown or withdrawal phase of retirement. Diversification across asset classes is one such way. Living on your nest egg and allowing it to endure through thick and thin should be of paramount importance to every retiree.

What about the attainable withdrawal rate and your account depletion rate over time, relative to your risk and return? This question refers to the general issue of retirement portfolio durability. In my recent research studies, I have found confirmation that the performance of a broadly diversified portfolio during retirement is a superior strategy to investing in less-diversified portfolios. For example, a diversified 4-asset class portfolio (large U.S. stock, small U.S. stock, bonds and cash) with an annual withdrawal rate of 4 percent clearly outperformed a 100-percent bond portfolio or an age-weighted bond/equity portfolio. From 1926 through 2014, using 35-year rolling periods, it was found that a 4-asset class diversified portfolio achieved success 98 percent of the time and finished with the highest average balance. And even with a 5-percent annual withdrawal rate, the success rate was 89 percent for the 4-asset portfolio during the same time period, and the average ending balance after 35 years was dramatically larger than the narrowly invested portfolios employing 100 percent bonds or an ageweighted stock/bond portfolio.

Ponder this. Are average diversified returns good enough? Should diversification be a lifelong strategy, both before and after retirement? Yes, most definitely. According to my research, the virtue of multi-asset “average” performance only becomes fully apparent over time. The challenge of building a multi-asset portfolio is in the short run, not the long run. Said differently, a multi-asset portfolio will never outperform the bestperforming individual asset class in any given year, but in the long run, historically speaking, it will win the portfolio return race with reduced risk. Multi-asset portfolios are steady, not flashy. Therein lies the problem:

Mark Wendell of MD Wendell Wealth Partners in Westlake Village, California, expressed his views on this subject: “Using diversifying techniques

helps investors protect themselves from themselves — that is, employing diversification strategies will counter investors’ tendency to make the human behavioral error of focusing on the most recent performance or winner rather than correctly and most importantly focusing on attempting to achieve a smoother ride with superior, longer-term results, especially in view of their monthly withdrawals. Using a more volatile risk-oriented strategy while withdrawing funds, clients may end up with a negative dollar cost averaging effect or a negative compounding result due to losses on some monthly payouts combined with distributions of interest and dividends. The result of this approach usually is lower long-term returns and quicker account depletion. Most people do not realize this negative impact on volatile portfolios while withdrawing funds, nor do they realize the difference between common-sense investment risk and gambling hope, which is why I put so much emphasis on portfolio risk-managed returns for my clients’ portfolios rather than stretching risk for higher total returns.” n Craig L. Israelsen, Ph.D., is an executive-inresidence in the Financial Planning Program at Utah Valley University. NEW CALABASAS MAYOR By Elena RIchards

Lucy Martin

On March 25th, Mayor David Shapiro’s term ended and Lucy Martin was sworn in as the city’s new mayor. Since she was first elected to the city council in 2011, Lucy Martin has been a tireless voice for Calabasas residents, holding regular office hours, working with city staff and asking important questions at council meetings. Lucy brings a common-sense appeal to the council and has been instrumental in forging a resolution to the city’s OWTS controversy, championing resident input into the city’s cell tower discussions and bringing closed-captioning of council meeting broadcasts to the city’s hearing impaired. Always offering a willing ear, Lucy is readily accessible and is known as the go-to council member for bringing resident concerns to council and city staff. David Shapiro’s year as mayor of Calabasas ended with a great number of people giving testimony to his accomplishments over the past year. Most notably was the amount of time David devoted to being with the citizens he represented. Shapiro will continue to ensure their success as a city council member. Lucy Martin’s son, Jake Martin, swore in his mother as mayor. Extended family was also in attendance at the ceremony.

BLU JAM Café

Creatively eclectic breakfast and lunch all day By Deborah Ryback Photography by Marvin Steindler

T

he imposing figure carefully overseeing all of the perfect culinary creations at Blu Jam Cafe seems more like an Olympic wrestling athlete than a star chef at first. But I am quickly convinced that Chef Kamil’s sport IS cooking.

Chef Kamil is anti preservatives and color additives and pro food pyramid, with breakfast being the strongest part at the bottom of the pyramid, needed to start the day. Did I mention that there are no fryers and no freezers?

The ruggedness is a hint at Kamil’s background growing up in Czechoslovakia and his journey to America with his father. He took with him the basics of really great cooking, which he attributes to his mother and grandmother, “taking nothing and making something wonderful out of it.” This has stuck with him throughout his 30-plus years in the gourmet business, working with the best chefs in the world.

Table tops are filled with attractive eye-catching dishes. The light and fluffy California Omelette is filled with crispy smoked bacon and fresh tomato with avocado on top. The beautiful Burgundy Omelette, both eye and palate pleasing, features spinach, mushrooms, Montchevre goat cheese and sundried tomatoes.

NW Rugs He also attributes his success to his attention to detail. “Attention to detail when I create a recipe or rework a family recipe is essential,” says Kamil. “I think outside the box. Presentation is crucial to me because your eyes eat first!”

Free range, natural and organic are all strived for and tracked down as local as possible, but Kamil is up for a challenge. If it means hunting down vendors in Santa Maria in search of perfect greens or American Kobe beef, so be it.

“For the Love of Tile” This love of food and family has come together at Blu Jam Cafe. He and partners, David Fris and Jeff Shulem, are a trio in friendship and business and have created a tasteful and unique vibe in all three locations, linked by the top quality of ingredients and wide menu options.

Blu Jam proudly serves only brown, cage-free eggs and serves their meat and seafood without antibiotics and added hormones. NO GMOs here! As Kamil seriously jokes, “If I can’t pronounce an ingredient, I will not serve it.” Wanting lunch for breakfast? Lunch is served ALL DAY as well.

Blu Jam Cafe prides itself on catering to the mantra that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and therefore should be offered all day, but in a healthful way.

92

Calabasas Style

A wide range of spectacular lunch entrees are available, like fresh Scottish Grilled Salmon, Chicken Schnitzel and the light Kale and

Strawberry Salad. ‘Kamil’s Lunch’ is Blu Jam’s famous Czech goulash, served with macaroni and chives. The goulash is a nod to mom and grandma and is a perfect feast for the palate, all in one glorious bowl. The fresh juice ‘bar’ is one of my favorite highlights. The diner gets to choose their own blend based on the fresh organic ingredients on the chalkboard. My go-to is apple, carrot and orange! Kamil and his attentive and friendly staff will treat you like family. Once they get to know you, don’t be surprised if you are sent a complimentary order to your table of their signature dish -- Crunchy French Toast! Imagine it: egg brioche dipped in batter, rolled in crunchy corn flakes, topped with fresh berries and served with pure maple syrup and vanilla bean sauce! Special dining requests are accommodated and include a selection of vegan and gluten-free options. The place is as packed as it is affordable, fun and healthy. Want to throw your own private party at a Blu Jam Cafe? After 4:00 p.m., you can rent out one of the locations and treat your guests to a unique event, leaving the cooking to the professionals. Chef Kamil welcomes competition. “I love competition and restaurants opening close to me,” he says. “Then I work even harder to be better than them. I say, bring it on!”

And bring on more openings! “We are striving to bring Blu Jam to every neighborhood in the greater Los Angeles area,” Kamil shares. Breakfast will always be the most important meal of the day, and the best breakfast can always be found at Blu Jam Cafe! n

Difference

Sweet treats for a sweet cause -- now, that is the ultimate fundraiser! The Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara invited community supporters to the biggest cupcake, pastry and dessert event of the year: the 4th Annual Let’s Bake A Difference event at the Westlake Village Inn. All proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to the Cancer Support Community. The Cancer Support Community believes that no one should face cancer alone. Thus, a spoonful of sugar makes a sweet difference in giving hope to children, adults and their families affected by cancer. The Cancer Support Community was not alone in this profound yet scrumptious venture as 50 professional and amateur bakers rallied together to help raise awareness and funds. The event included a VIP lounge, a baking and cupcake competition, a plethora of sweet samples, live entertainment, free face painting stations, cake auctions, a photo booth and a silent auction.

Musical

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

On February 20th and 21st, Hidden Hills residents once again celebrated Valentine’s Day with their annual charity musical review. This year’s performances were in support of A.E. Wright Middle School; Act Today! for autism, which raises awareness and provides treatment services and support to families and their children with autism; and the My Stuffed Bags Foundation, which provides new belongings, comfort and hope to thousands of abused, neglected and abandoned children. Based on the life and legend of Annie Oakley, this year’s show was reminiscent of “Annie Get Your Gun,” with everything from singing and dancing to target shooting and juggling! Thanks to the hard work of all involved and the support of the Hidden Hills Community Association, a good time was had by all on stage, in the audience and at the after party.

SUMMER Ideas for Kids By Beth Cone Kramer Summer vacation may mean a break from early morning carpools, packing school lunches, helping with the homework and school projects but those lazy days in the pool can quickly shift to: “Mom, I’m bored!” Luckily, we have so many local options for kids to explore their interests or even a day at the beach. Right in our own backyard, we have dozens of great summer schools, camps and activities to keep kids happy, no matter what their interests. The cities of Calabasas and Agoura even offer the Beach Bus, a local summer tradition that has been popular with local teens for decades! n

ART INSTALLATION

Photography by Derek De La Luz

Who says school can’t be fun? Celebrated artist Jason deCaires Taylor paid MUSE School a very important and influential visit on February 18th when he produced elements for his next underwater art installation with the help of 60 eager and thrilled students. “We are thrilled to have our students involved in Jason’s brilliant work,” said Head of School Jeff King. “Mentorships are a central part of education philosophy at MUSE. Our students greatly appreciate the opportunity to connect and create with a working artist.” Echoing the principles of recycling and refurbishing, old electronics -- such as cell phones, pagers and radios -- were cast and incorporated into the new piece that will form part of the Museo Atlantico, off the coast of Lanzarote, Spain. DeCaires Taylor flew into Los Angeles to help support Red Carpet Green Dress, a fashion design competition created by MUSE Co-Founder Suzy Amis Cameron that uses the Academy Awards’ red carpet to raise the profile of eco-friendly and sustainable design while also raising funds for MUSE School.

I

f you’re a parent in Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Bell Canyon or the Conejo Valley, your kids have probably taken a tumbling or gymnastics class or even attended a birthday party at Monarchs in Agoura Hills. If you grew up in the area, maybe you even put on a leotard yourself here and did your first handstand at the studio! Monarchs has long been a community mainstay as a safe place for kids to learn and practice new skills. All parents want the best for their kids and that includes instilling a love for learning at an early age, long before kids take high school calculus or learn Shakespeare. Since local parents are always looking for meaningful

“All parents want the best for their kids and that includes instilling a love for learning at an early age.”

activities for their kids, Monarchs has extended their program and launched Happy Kidz Enrichment Center on April 1st. The program is set to provide supplemental experiences for preschool kids. On the academic side, Happy Kidz will teach kids math and reading readiness, as well as traditional preschool skills. But the program doesn’t stop there. Happy Kidz also exposes kids to sensory and social development activities, which are important for school and lifetime success. Through gymnastics instruction and other athletic components, the kids work on gross motor development. The program is rounded out with art, music, interactive play and American Sign Language. Kids are happy. Parents are happy. What’s not to love? Monarchs has been a household name since opening in 1977, and the gym not only serves as a place to learn a backflip but as a community that inspires kids to grow through camps and programs that teach gymnastics, tumbling, urban gymnastics, cheerleading and more in a fun, engaging manner. Yelena and Vitaly Urusov acquired the gym in 1997. In 2003, the Newbury Park location was opened and is a mainstay in the Conejo Valley. Further expansion led to the 2012 opening of the MonarX Parkour Complex and Monarchs Mobile gymnastics. How does Monarchs Happy Kidz program differ from other programs? Happy Kidz aims to inspire kids to grow through a holistic and wholesome approach to learning that centers on the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of the human spirit so that each child can develop as a whole. The Monarchs teaching method is a blend of traditional and Montessori styles. And anyone whose kids have been there know that the staff is friendly, engaging, positive and encouraging. They really care about each and every child and are part of the perfect recipe for preschool enrichment.

“Monarchs has been a household name since opening in 1977.”

From the newly launched Happy Kidz Enrichment Center to tumbling, gymnastics, cheer classes and Parkour, Monarchs offers something for kids of just about any age and interest in a fun, supportive and safe environment. n

Ask the

Pharmacist Q A

My nose is running, I am constantly sneezing and my eyes are watering. What can I do to get some relief from my annoying allergies?

There are a lot of options available for you to get relief that do not require a prescription, including Flonase, which recently became available without a prescription. Flonase is a steroid nasal spray similar to Nasacort. They both work by fighting inflammation and are in the “single most effective drug class” for treating nasal allergies according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. These medications should be used on a daily basis during allergy season to keep your symptoms away; they do not work “as needed.” In fact, they can take up to one to two weeks to reach full effectiveness. It is also important to follow the package instructions or ask a pharmacist how to administer the spray so that it ends up inside your nasal passages and not just in your nose. A helpful hint is to bend over and look at your toes while holding the bottle up and squirting. Possible side effects of the nasal sprays include nasal irritation and nose bleeds. Oral antihistamines are another great option. These medications target histamine, which is a chemical your body releases when you come in contact with an allergy-triggering substance. Claritin, Allegra, and Zyrtec were only available by prescription just a few years ago, and now, they are also over-the-counter medications. Their main advantage over the older antihistamines, including Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton, is that they are less sedating. They can be used “as needed” to provide immediate relief. As you can see, there are many options available to obtain relief from your allergy symptoms. I advise you to discuss your particular situation with your pharmacist. There are still plenty of prescription products available as well. If you cannot get relief from the over-the-counter products, you should see your physician. n

Supporting Our Schools Has Never Been So By Elena RIchards June has always meant graduations, Father’s Day and the heralding of summer. But in Las Virgenes, it’s beginning to take on a new meaning. For the fourth consecutive year, on June 6th, over 1,000 guests from our Las Virgenes community will come together for what has become the “party of the year.” Known as The Event, this truly amazing night features gourmet food and wine tastings, fabulous auctions and a live concert performance. The night is spectacular, but what is most noteworthy is the cause. The Event is the main fundraiser for The Foundation for Las Virgenes Schools, a nonprofit education foundation that supports all 16 schools in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. Over the past four years, our generous community has raised over $775,000 to help manage class sizes and strengthen the counseling program at every school site. In addition to The Event, The Foundation holds a back-to-school carnival in September at the Whizin Market Square and an annual parent appeal in the fall. The Foundation’s overall belief is that at the core of a vibrant community is a high-performing and successful school district. When the public schools are high performing, people want to live here, which maintains our property values and supports our businesses. Public education is an issue for us all.

This year, The Event will showcase food from fantastic local restaurants such as Pedalers Fork, Rosti Tuscan Kitchen, Roy’s, The Six, Paul Martin’s and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse. Participating wineries include Ferrari-Carano, Loring, Oro Bello, Laurel Glen and Modus Operandi. The silent auction will feature domestic and international trips, jewelry, wine, sporting events, theme park tickets and more. In the past, the live auction has had concert tickets, a Rolex watch donated by Polacheck’s Jewelers, Oscar party passes, exclusive sporting event packages courtesy of Barry’s Tickets, and more. The night will be capped off with a phenomenal live concert experience. One thing’s for sure, Las Virgenes residents love their schools and know how to have a good time. The Debut

Pagani Huayra

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Greg Grudt

H

uayra. The one and only Pagani Huayra. At a base price of $1.4 million dollars, the Pagani Huayra is truly a hypercar. A hypercar is a kind of unicorn in the automotive world. You have seen it online and in magazines, but does it really exist? That is the question. When rumors hit Southern California that Pagani Beverly Hills had received and was going to deliver its first Pagani Huayra, social media was abuzz. Is it true? Will it be driven? Who bought it? All these questions and more were driving the car community crazy. Then, like wildfire, word hit that the privately owned Pagani Huayra was going to be debuting at Supercar Sunday, and the debut became a car show unto itself -- it was the Pagani Show!

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Greg Grudt

The Huayra, which is named after the god of wind, boasts 720 hp out of its 6.0-liter, twin-turbo Mercedes Benz AMG motor, custom built for Pagani. When the twin turbos “spool,” it’s as if there is a hurricane behind you...the God of wind indeed! And that’s when you know where Huayra got its name. The top speed of the Huayra is well over 200 mph. People who’ve had the opportunity to drive the Huayra or be a passenger in it have called riding in it one of the greatest moments of their automobiling lives. With approximately 10 Huayras dedicated to be delivered in the United States this year, the legend of the Huayras is alive, yet still a unicorn!

Calabasas Chamber of Commerce Developing Business with Community Partners

C

hamber of Commerce businesses and community groups working in partnership enjoy many advantages. Business gains points for social responsibility, and the community group gains through improved access to finances, knowledge, people or skills. Encouraging business and community organizations to work together fosters a healthy and viable society and can also lead to reinvigorating local support for community work. Now, more than ever, it is important for both parties to look into these partnerships. Community organizations have to function with less government financial support -- to support, to give something back, to reinvest in the community, to re- connect with the community and, importantly, to be publicly seen to be doing so. Businesses that engage in community partnerships enjoy many positive effects. Such partnership puts business owners and employees in touch with issues outside their own area of knowledge. Chamber business and community partnerships can take on various forms, including sponsorship, grants, volunteering, donations, in-kind support through products and services, mentoring and expert advice, or a combination of these.

A business investing in a community organization also gets recognition by that organization and the wider community. This investment helps build an ethical business reputation which, in these recent days, is increasingly important. Employees see working for such a business as a bonus, and in turn, the effects to employees are also a positive experience. This promotes loyalty and helps motivate workers, who also have an opportunity to gain more knowledge and skills outside their job descriptions. The Calabasas Chamber and the City of Calabasas pride themselves on their partnership, serving the community at the Annual Wine Tasting, the long standing Pumpkin Festival and this year working together on Host Town Calabasas for the Special Olympics World Games.

Besitos Boutique Spring Party Besitos Boutique in Calabasas hosted their spring party on March 26th. The event featured a wonderful trunk show of fabulous jewelry from Tova Malibu and Joseph Ribkoff’s new spring fashion collection. While they shopped, guests enjoyed the Besitos hospitality of Eva, Joy and Sheryl and entertainment by Ventura Productions.

y Supercar Sundaow World-Famous fa vorite weekly car sh California’s

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Greg Grudt and Casey Schendel

F

errari Marque Day at Supercar Sunday was...wet! But that did not stop Ferrari enthusiasts from all over California from making the trek down to their favorite car show.

Ferrari after Ferrari rolled into the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills to participate in one of the most anticipated Marque Days, honoring the legendary Ferrari. Wet skies and wet weather did not hold back the most enthusiastic owners from proving that Ferraris do not melt in the rain. What many thought would be a bust due to weather was, in fact, a huge success. From the rarified Ferrari Enzo to the latest Ferrari, the 458s, there was no shortage of Ferrari passion. The Auto Gallery, presenting sponsor of Supercar Sunday, also pulled out all stops and shared the latest and most exotic of Marque cars that they represent, including the McLaren 650S, Porsche 918s and Turbos, Maseratis and Lamborghini Aventadors. It was awesome. The Auto Gallery also provided a Formula 1 driving simulator and trophies for the fastest laps. It was more of a celebration of passion than anything else.

Ferrari Marque Day was a huge success thanks to all the Ferrari owners and clubs that participated, as well as the Auto Gallery who provided so much value to the car community. For more information, please visit supercarsunday.com. n
