A NOTE FROM THE
editor
Our May/June issue is always about Home Décor and inspirational ways to decorate. We feature the favorite rooms of some of our local families that graciously opened their homes to us. Meanwhile, local decorators, designers, and other industry experts offer advice on new trends and how to achieve the interiors and exteriors of our dreams. Also, we don’t want you to forget about Mom or Dad, so check out the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Gift Guide with ideas to make them feel special. Take a look at the Women in Business section featuring some of the exceptional professionals in our midst. Women often multitask and handle large amounts of responsibilities with ease, and we love to support them and celebrate each other’s successes. Our cover this issue features the King Family. They were drawn to Calabasas because of the parks, trees, shops, and farmers markets, as well as the million dollar views. Don’t forget to check out the Summer Fun for Kids section for great ideas on how to keep your kids busy this summer. Also this issue, I would like to take a moment to remember and honor my father, Bill Marshall, who spent 53 years in the publishing business and inspired me to start Calabasas Style magazine. We are never ready to lose someone we love, even when they had a long, well-lived life. It is a time to celebrate this man and the legacy he left behind. I want to dedicate this issue to my dad, the first man I ever loved. Until we dance again… Gayle Barnes Publisher/Editor stylepublishing@gmail.com

The 5-seater comes standard with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine and is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. SUNDOWN TO SUNSET SIERRA CANYON ANNUAL GALA ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Danny Baker
On Saturday, April 13, members of the Sierra Canyon School community celebrated their Annual Gala and Fundraiser at Boulevard3 nightclub in Hollywood. The theme of this year’s event was “Sundown to Sunset.” Guests mingled at a garden cocktail hour upon arrival, enjoying hors d’oeuvres and light fare from Bruce’s Catering, and later moved inside for a spirited live auction hosted by Los Angeles legend and REAL 92.3’s Big Boy. Before the evening was over, guests were treated to a private performance by LeAnn Rimes. Sierra Canyon extends a special thank you to the evening’s performers for donating their time and talent and to all of the families that contributed to making this event a success. Sierra Canyon School is a private college preparatory school for students in grades Pre-K through high school on two adjacent campuses in the San Fernando Valley. The GG is a Global
Glow-Up
By Anna Guanche, MD FAAD Board-Certified Dermatologist Bella Skin Institute Looking for the ultimate skin-smoothing procedure? If you want to see your skin smoother and more glowy than it has ever been, this low-to-no-downtime GG – Global Glow-Up is the best I’ve seen. It is actually a series of procedures that can give you the smoothest skin you’ve ever had. When choosing procedures to offer at Bella Skin Institute, I often test them out on myself first. Having tried many devices and procedures over the years, I was shocked by the dramatic results achieved with this combination, that I have now dubbed the “GG,” or Global Glow-Up, because the procedures and products in this combination are from all over the world. They are combined as the “GG” to provide you with your best skin ever. Germany: Jessner’s Peel. First the skin is cleansed and defatted with a topical agent to prepare for a Jessner’s Peel. The namesake peel, developed by Dr. Max Jessner, a German dermatologist, is composed of resorcinol, lactic acid, and salicylic acid. It is a very mild, even peel that is a popular standalone procedure that leaves the skin glowy and smooth, with reduced pigmentation. USA: Microneedling. Shallow (in this case) microneedling, developed by Dr. Desmond Fernandes, is popular for many reasons. First, it stimulates collagen. When delivered with a device such as the Eclipse or Dermapen systems, the results are smooth, even coverage. Small channels resulting in the skin immediately after the procedure make the stratum corneum, or hard outer layer of the skin, more permeable. This allows active ingredients to be delivered through the skin’s sur face, where increased effectiveness can be expected. Japan or France: Smears. Here is where the active ingredients come in. A smear has a generally negative connotation except in the skin world. Smearing refers to the application of active ingredients to the skin after microneedling. Platelet-rich plasma is one such ingredient. In the GG, we either smear tranexamic acid (TXA) to reduce pigmentation or another proprietary formula to stimulate collagen. And yes, you guessed it: TXA for melasma was popularized in Japan, while the collagen stimulant was patented in France. This step of the GG is tailored to the patient’s needs.
Calabasas: Bella Microgold. A small sterile vial with shallow microneedles capable of delivering product to the sur face layers of the skin is loaded with our favorites: injectable hyaluronic acid and neuromodulators (Juvederm ® and Botox ® for example), as well as another ingredient that aids with effective delivery. This is also a standalone procedure that results in smooth skin—and is already very popular at Bella Skin Institute. When applied after the above procedures, it is even more effective, reaching the target depth more easily when the skin has already been “opened.” Japan: GG Finishing Mask. This soothing mask is the per fect wrap-up for the series. Originally from Japan but adapted for our practice, this mask soothes, hydrates, and revitalizes the skin. Again, it is a popular standalone procedure, but when applied just after Bella Microgold, it soothes the skin and seals the active ingredients in for maximal effectiveness. Patients love the feeling of this mask and always leave satisfied. The GG incorporates beauty secrets from all over the globe to provide the optimal skin-per fecting results. The effects last two to six months and are noticeable by most. Many of our patients report receiving numerous comments and questions: “What have you done to your skin? I’ll have what you’re having!” Innovations in dermatology have always included various combinations. Having been in practice for over 15 years, I have been putting various effective procedures together. For skin smoothing, the GG is currently our gold standard. n

BOOK SIGNING “LETTERS TO MY SON: A MOTHER’S JOURNEY THROUGH GRIEF”
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Linda Perry
Local author and resident Daynabelle Anderson hosted a book signing event on March 3 at the home of her friend Cory Rabonza in Mont Calabasas. Daynabelle Anderson’s personal narrative, “Letters to My Son: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief” (published by Archway Publishing), offers her story and her perspective on how to live with grief, intended for anyone who has lost a loved one and who feels pressured to move on. With the loss of her son, Jeramie, to a car accident, Daynabelle found a way to work through her pain and grief by writing letters to her son, articulating how the stages of grief and loss do not occur in a linear manner. By publishing her book, she hopes to bring comfort and hope to parents grieving the loss of a child. Daynabelle is the current owner of Kumon in Calabasas-West. The book is available for purchase at: amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and daynabelle.com.

Throughout history, women have been known to make their jobs look effortless, whether they are running small, local companies or leading multinational corporations. We’d like to honor some of our local businesswomen who treat their teams like family as they mentor staff and provide shining examples of fortitude and ingenuity. Most women already possess certain inherent traits, such as flexibility and emotional intelligence. They’ve also learned how to communicate well and check their egos at the door to really listen to other viewpoints. Born multitaskers, women clearly understand the importance of balancing work and family life while making each one of their relationships feel like number one. Women today thrive in boardrooms all over the world and right in our own backyard. On the following pages, we offer a glimpse into the hearts and minds of a few of our local female leaders. We hope you’ll be inspired as you discover how they use a storehouse of empathy, ideals, drive, and passion to succeed in the world of business.

Making the Environment Better – One Pool at a Time By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler These days, so much of the water in our households is essentially unfit for consumption. Even the pools in our backyards are full of toxic chemicals, making them hazardous to our health. With spring here and summer fast approaching, it’s time to think about making those beautiful backyard pools even more fit for our children, families, and friends. Traditional pool water treatment methods require toxic chemicals such as cyanuric acid, conditioners, stabilizers, and algaecides, which never disintegrate. In fact, they actually increase in concentration over time, and combined with the weekly doses of chlorine
96
Calabasas Style
and muriatic acid added, they truly become a lethal combination of carcinogens. That’s the reason it is industry recommended to change your pool water every four to five years. But now there is an eco-friendly option. For example, a water system called the H2titan Hyper Water System ™ uses no chemicals, and therefore, there is no oversaturation of toxins and no need to change the water because it’s 100% chemical free.
including chlorine. In a saltwater pool, an electrode (also called a salt cell) is installed in the plumbing, and as the diluted saltwater passes through the cell, the electrical reaction creates chlorine. Not only is it not a healthy alternative, it’s introducing the corrosiveness of salt in your pool and destroying your pool equipment, tile work, decking, and even the grass, shrubs, and environment.
Even saltwater pools create toxic chlorine. While saltwater pools are thought to be less harmful, it’s quite the contrary. Saltwater pools utilize all the same toxic cancer causing chemicals
The makers of the H2titan Hyper Water System spent nearly 20 years and millions of dollars creating this revolutionary purification system solution. Local Thousand Oaks company Kem Free
Pools offers H2titan Hyper Water System, the planet’s first and only proprietary approach using HYDROVORTX Technology ™ to create hydrogen ions. You can finally make your backyard pool safer, eliminating cancer-causing carcinogens with an eco-friendly, 100%-chemical-free Hyper Water System. H2titan is an automated water-management system that regulates pH, controls algae, and manages alkalinity–with zero chemicals added to the water. H2titan uses patented technology, not chemicals, to efficiently manage water chemistry. H2titan is not an ionizer system and uses no metals of any kind to produce its effervescent cleansing ion. H2titan is the only freshwater management system in the world that produces pure, healthy, drinkable water with zero chemicals added.
“The constant cycle of using noxious chemicals to manage swimming pool water seemed backwards,” notes Kem Free Water Owner Harry Papaian. “The use of one chemical compound triggered the need for others. We understood the damage these caustic chemicals did to pool equipment, surfaces, and, most importantly, swimmers and wanted to rectify these hazardous issues.” With the H2titan, there’s no need for chlorine; muriatic acid; algaecides; stabilizer (cyanuric acid); clarifiers; or metals to keep pool water sparkling clean. The system acts by streaming pH-balancing ions into the filtration system to maintain a perfect pH level, eliminate algae and other microorganisms, and control alkalinity and total hardness, all at the same time. Kem Free Water has achieved great results over the past five years, installing thousands of units. The dedicated team of engineers, technologists, sales people, and installers help ensure each system gets hooked up quickly and correctly. The installation of the H2titan water management system components does not require the modification of existing filtration systems. To learn more about protecting your home and family from harmful pool chemicals with the H2titan Hyper Water System, call and schedule your installation now or visit their website. n

the

If

comfortable
for you and your family, it’s a much more satisfying result if it is done to your taste, rather than just following the current trends.
The keys to great
design are functionality and aesthetics. When designing your forever home, all the elements of the design should be durable and sustainable for long-lasting quality. If you’re remodeling a home with the intention of selling it, the buyer's tastes can vary so try neutral tones and a modern design. Contemporary designs are still the most requested by homeowners. Warm tones, such as beiges, browns, and taupes, are gaining popularity. Stainless steel, quartz, tile, bamboo, gold fixtures, and waterproof flooring are all sought after, but still depend on the personal preferences of the homeowners. Family-owned NES Property Services is led by licensed general contractor Natalie Wizman. She is involved every step of the way, overseeing each project from start to finish. Natalie uses her design expertise to help clients create their dream homes. Whether you are building a new home or remodeling, Natalie fosters long-term relationships with her clients, ensuring that everyone involved has the least amount of stress and even an enjoyable experience throughout the process. And multi-sliding and bi-folding patio doors, which permit as much as 90% of the outside scenery to show, allow more golden sunlight and glimmering moonlight to shine through. While current trends enable more light to stream in, darker materials, such as bronze and anodized aluminum, fiberglass, or clad material, have become quite popular. The clever use of wall or remote openers to automate patio doors continues to expand, as does door size. Window manufacturers also offer more colors and custom options than ever before. And don’t forget the gateway to the entire house…the front door. Dark colors with some obscure glass pivoting doors add a splash of excitement upfront. The most popular type continues to be aluminum, thanks to its beauty, flexibility in style, and weather-resistant durability. Outdoor aluminum furniture is available in many finishes and styles, from traditional to contemporary, and is fitted with either plush cushioning, sling, or padded-sling seating variations. Using extension tables for al fresco dining is a new trend in outdoor furniture. These special tables have a mechanism that adjusts the length of the table. They are available in an array of shapes, styles, sizes, and materials. Another popular outdoor table is the KNF-Neille Olson mosaic table. These eye-catching tables feature handcut tiles made from opaque stained glass, marble, or travertine mounted by hand into colored concrete. The designs and color options range from traditional to dramatic. Timeless neutral colors, like gray and beige, are still popular and fit well in a variety of backyard designs. COOL TILE FROM
WESTSIDE TILE & STONE
With increasingly abundant tile options available in today’s marketplace, sustainable goods are becoming more sought out. While most trends are revolving around ceramic tiles, Carrara marble, or white-marble porcelain slabs, the bold colors and patterns that are starting to pop up are a welcome sight. The advantage of ceramic tile is the abundance of colors and shapes available. Since these tiles are being used in both traditional and contemporary installations, you can install them in unique patterns, such as chevron, herringbone, or staggered brick. Carrara marble remains popular. Material comes in a variety of sizes, finishes, and mosaics that allow it to be used in all sorts of residential applications. The fashionable look of Carrara marble allows kitchens and bathrooms to take on both cool and warm tones that blend a variety of styles. The rise in use of Carrara marble has increased the number of porcelain tiles made to resemble it. The introduction of digital-print technology has allowed porcelain tiles to look exponentially better than before, with an ever-growing amount of variation found in real marble. These marble-looking tiles allow for easy maintenance without worry of staining or discoloration like with real marble. Porcelain slabs have taken the market by storm and are a perfect fit for showers. The advantage of porcelain slabs is not only the jaw-dropping effect of having large pieces of seamless tile in your shower, but also the cost advantage over real marble slabs. Porcelain slabs are extremely durable and can be cleaned very easily. With porcelain slabs taking over the market, we’re seeing a multitude of marble-looking and onyx-looking slabs that fit every style and need. n Westside Tile & Stone 7631 Canoga Ave. Canoga Park 818.704.9222 westsidetile.com

LATEST
TRENDS
TO WATCH FROM
IDN FLOORING Flooring trends change from year to year as homeowners acquire new tastes and technology allows for a larger variety of designs. According to IDN Flooring in Canoga Park, dark hues struck the right note with homeowners this year and last. Flooring finishes ranging from jet black to light gray remain very popular. Always keep the room’s natural lighting and color in mind. If the room is fairly light, use a dark floor and vice versa. Another trend that could continue into next year is letting imperfections, such as a flooring’s grain and pockmarks, create a more natural look and feel. Many factors come into play when deciding what flooring to choose. Determine your ideal wood; decide if you’d like engineered or solid flooring, floated, glued or nailed, and whether the strips should be laid straight, diagonally, or otherwise. Strips placed lengthwise make a room look longer. Placed widthwise, they make it look wider. Lay your floor in the same direction as the light entering the room. Flooring can also be placed in all kinds of patterns. Always keep the size of the room in mind; some require a large area to achieve their full effect. Different woods also possess varying degrees of hardness. Choose denser flooring for rooms that must withstand a lot of traffic, such as hallways, living rooms, and kitchens. Bedrooms usually receive the least. Finishing touches are also extremely important. Oiled finishes work well with floors that get a lot of wear. If one part of an oiled floor is damaged, for instance, it is possible to repair that specific area. Varnished floors can also handle a lot of action and are easily maintained. n IDN Flooring 7947 Canoga Ave. Canoga Park 818.888.8051 idnflooring.net

NEW TRENDS FROM
FACTOR
SURFACES When it comes to choosing materials for floors and surfaces, according to the designers at Factor Surfaces, in 2019, bigger is truly better, or at least the most popular. One of the newest trends in commercial and residential wall design is 3D porcelain tile. Usually seen in white or light beige, this three-dimensional porcelain provides a stunning impact of light and shadow,
turning
an
ordinary-looking
room into a piece of sculpture. Endless geometric patterns and continuous curvy lines further lend rooms the feeling of infinity. Large format tiles in porcelain and engineered wood are also in the forefront this year for both walls and flooring. The oversized pieces create an aura of spaciousness. The veins in the porcelain can mimic marble and other more expensive materials for a cost-effective alternative. Supporting the concept that nothing good ever goes out of fashion, several recent trends withstanding the test of time include black-and-white checkerboard floors and chevron wood flooring. First observed in 15th-century
paintings,
black-and-white
flooring is clearly classical. The chevron “V pattern that is currently very popular for flooring can be found back in ancient times in rock carvings and pottery. Stylish as flooring since the 17th century, today chevron-patterned engineered wood imparts both convenience and beauty. The pre-made blocks of engineered wood are also more easily installed than traditional wood, which adds to their popularity. Factor Surfaces has offered the latest trends in walls and flooring, plus installation and maintenance, for more than 30 years, transforming homes and businesses into works of art. n Factor Surfaces 22419 Ventura Blvd. Woodland Hills 818.348.0401 factorsurfaces.com

LESS IS MORE AT
ELEGANT FIREPLACE MANTELS
Fireplace mantels have long provided both the warm heart and central hearth of a home. One of the newest trends for mantels in 2019 is minimalist. Creating a fireplace feature that blends seamlessly into the room and surrounding walls is a definite option. Additional hot looks include
intricately
carved
limestone,
marble, and other natural stones. Less expensive than marble, limestone can look just as rich and is extremely durable. Match kitchen counters and islands with slabs of the same-colored marble or limestone for an elegant touch. During the Victorian era, fireplaces were built in multiple rooms for warmth. Today, having several fireplaces in a single home has become the fashion rather than the necessity, especially in warmer climates. Rustic

Consider incorporating bricks and natural stones into your fireplace and mantel. Elegant Fireplace Mantels in San Fernando creates a myriad of limestone, traditional, old-Europe, contemporary, modern, and custom-made

Growing up in a family of builders, Kaspi began his professional journey in construction in 1998. Kaspi started out as a kitchen designer and licensed
contractor before merging his talents in design, construction, and smart energy, which he accumulated throughout his lifetime together with those on his accomplished team of in-house designers, architects, project managers, and permit facilitators. Now, over 25 years later, Pure Builders, under Kaspi’s direction, remains on the cutting edge of design trends, both classic and modern, keeping up with the ever-changing industry and its permit and zoning requirements. Kaspi builds and creates homes as well as lifelong relationships with his clientele.

Clients are even asking for a “messy” kitchen behind their real kitchen. But how “open” is too open? Let’s explore the pros and cons.
Cons EVERYTHING becomes a focal point Furnishings in an open concept home call for everything to coordinate, and changing just one thing can make you feel the need to address everything. If you have separate rooms, on the other hand, you have so much more freedom to create a different look in each space. Even painting walls becomes a challenge.

MY FAVORITE SPACE JENNIFER LOPATA: LIVING ROOM Jennifer loves how the living room brings the outdoors in, with its glass wall overlooking the patio and wood beams made from an East Coast pier extending through both. “It is an oasis for me,” explains Jennifer. “I love to spend time in the living room at the end of the day to relax and unwind. Its calming environment also allows me to reflect on creative ideas to meet the needs of the students I work with.” One of the room’s focal points is a large piano, an heirloom from Jennifer’s husband’s family, where friends and family gather for annual holiday celebrations. THE TARRS: ENGLISH GARDEN Linda loves English gardens. She learned so much from her grandmother, who was an incredible gardener. Linda and her husband, Ralph, found a large, framed photograph of an English country pathway, bordered by beautiful flowers, and tried to recreate it. “The challenge was to produce such beauty in the desert-like conditions of Calabasas, the opposite of England,” explains Linda. The couple has lived in their extraordinary Mountain Park home for 25 years. She adds, “Always believe you can create the garden of your dreams right here in our very own Calabasas. THE DEKELS: LIVING ROOM After raising their family in a large home, the Dekels purchased a home on Lake Calabasas. “The dining room and living room are definitely our favorite spots, as we love to entertain,” says Tracy. “Our last house was formal; this is casual and comfortable.” After a complete remodel, the home is now exactly the dream they imagined. “I am blessed to have the best interior designer in my family, my daughter Skylar, Skylar Hope Design,” continues Tracy. “She has an incredible eye and creative approach at combining sophistication, practicality, and unique styles.” The Dekels’ favorite memories include having family and friends over for boat Photography by Steve Geldman

MY FAVORITE SPACE BRENDA J. MOGHADAM: KITCHEN Brenda J. Moghadam feels the kitchen is the heart of a home, where the family can gather together to plan events and vacations or simply share their day. She notes, “After traveling to Europe, we wanted to implement a classic French Chateaux design throughout our home. Our architect brought our ideas to life. We also worked closely with designer Georgia Jacobson who brought in color, fabrics, and details to create a European feel.” An interior designer herself, Brenda’s favorite element is the vaulted ceiling with its lovely pearl finish that reflects the changing light throughout the day. ANAT ERSTER: BACKYARD No matter if she’s enjoying a cup of coffee as the sun rises or a glass of wine during the picturesque sunset, Anat Erster feels an incredible connection to nature in her backyard. She has vowed to never take her “happy place” for granted. With its cascading pool fountain and exquisite topof-the-world views, her backyard is a tranquil retreat no matter the weather or time of day. One of Anat’s greatest pleasures is hosting her friends and neighbors after a long day of work to relax and marvel at the ever-changing scenery.

MY FAVORITE SPACE TONI YAMIN: LIVING ROOM “Living on the lake in Calabasas has been a goal of mine for many years,” explains Toni Yamin, “which I have finally realized.” She and her husband love looking at the lake and large patio from their living room. It makes every day feel like a vacation. During her husband’s recent birthday celebration, they opened up the sliding doors between the living room and patio so guests could flow in and out, which everyone enjoyed. A large custom-made crystal cabinet is also a favorite focal point of the room, along with autographed copies of coffee table books collected over the years. Photography by Steve Geldman

MY FAVORITE SPACE THE GELDMANS: MEDIA ROOM Steve and Dana Geldman wanted to turn their living room into a truly functional space. The couple utilized Steve’s vast knowledge of high-fidelity audio to transform this relatively small area of their Westlake Village home into a high-quality media room. “We relax in our leather reclining media chairs watching a Blu-ray movie in 4K HD, listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan at 33-1/3 rpm, or a SACD 5.1 mix of a Queen track,” notes Steve. Dana chose the Asian-influenced furniture, wall color, and art, while Steve custom designed a birch media cabinet and selected all the media gear. Photography by Steve Geldman
THE HEATHS: KITCHEN When the Heaths remodeled their kitchen last year with the help of JRP Design and Remodel of Westlake Village, they wanted to create a bright, cheerful space. “The former kitchen had a lot of brown and terra cotta,” notes Melissa. “I love light, bright kitchens with painted cabinets, so that served as my inspiration.” They managed to keep certain meaningful touches intact, such as a rustic Mexican door table, dishes displayed in glass cabinets, and a scale that belonged to Melissa’s mother. THE PARTONS: THE GALLERY Elyssa Parton owned a furniture store for nine years in Westlake Village called Pacific Rim Home. Over the years, along with their travels, Elyssa and Bruce Parton collected objets d'art that touched their hearts. In their new home, they created "The Gallery" to display them, adding gold and silver wallpaper as a stunning backdrop. The soft gray tones of the Italian porcelain floors marry beautifully with the gray-andwhite faux-marble fireplace, making it the perfect place to cuddle up during the winter months. Porsche Experience Center: LA By Dustin Troyan Photography by Porsche When Keith Goldberg, the general manager of Rusnak Porsche in Westlake, invited me to a VIP Experience at the Porsche Experience Center, I was stoked. The Porsche Experience Center (PECLA) is in Carson, California—a great spot because it’s centrally located and right off the freeway. I can tell you that my experience was very special because every Porsche Experience Center team member made me feel special. When you walk in, you are greeted with friendly smiles and a warm welcome. You step into a different world, and you are treated well—not in the sense that they are trying to sell you something, but in the sense that you sincerely matter. You are not a customer. You are not really a guest. You are almost a celebrity in that everyone there is happy to see you and their primary focus is sharing the Porsche brand and their driving passion with you. They make you feel like everybody deserves the Porsche experience. And that includes you! I don’t own a Porsche, and it didn’t matter. Sure, I know a bit about cars, but they had no idea if I was a neophyte or an expert. They introduce you to the Porsche lifestyle in such a passionate manner, that you instantly fall in love with the brand. I have been purposely vague about my experience at PECLA for a couple reasons. One is that I simply want to motivate you to visit the Porsche Experience Center in Carson. I guarantee you that you should take your father, your son, your wife, your daughter, your best friend, your work team, and/ or an old friend for a good time. You will have a blast. Ironically, it doesn’t matter if any of you are into Porsche. It will be the experience of a lifetime. For more information, visit porschedriving.com/porsche-experience-center-los-angeles. n

Ask the
Pharmacist Q
It seems like I am going to the pharmacy every week to get one of my parents prescriptions filled. Is there a way to get them all at the same time, once a month?
A
Everyone is busy these days, we spend so much of our time running errands that we do not have enough time for the fun or relaxing activities. I am sure if you could make one
trip to the pharmacy each month you could find something better to do with the time you save. To help you achieve this, most pharmacies offer a service called “medication synchronization” or med sync for short. It saves patients time, money and hassle when it comes to their prescription drug refills. It also can go a long way toward tackling a national health problem and reducing the country’s overall medical costs from patients not taking their medications properly. Poor adherence may be the most deadly, most costly, and yet most preventable action that can keep patients healthier. Many patients and families have multiple medications and getting all those refills can require several trips to the pharmacy each month. Now through a med sync program your pharmacy team can work with your insurance plans so that all of your refills are available for pickup on the same date. The pharmacy can check with you each month to see if there are any changes in the medications and will also contact you when all of the prescriptions are ready for pickup. Our patients currently enrolled in this program love it. A new national survey reinforces that, finding that 83 percent of patients signed up for med sync services say that they are very helpful in managing their prescription refills, according to Langer Research Associates.

ribbon cutting ceremony on March 20 at the club, located on the campus of Redwood Middle School. The event attracted approximately 120 guests who toured the facility and listened to presentations by officials who shared the exciting plans for the Notter Family Club. The transformation of the Notter Club was accomplished through a Capital Campaign and strategic plan initiated by the BGCGCV. Campaign funds were used to build a brand new 8,000-square-foot facility, expanding the reach of the former Redwood Club and enabling the provision of additional programs and activities for youth. The club will now be able to serve three times the number of members that the former building was able to accommodate. For more information, visit bgcconejo.org.

Ask the
Pediatrician How can I keep my family safe this summer?
School is out and summer is in! Here are my summer safety “S”s to ensure your family enjoys a safe summer. 1. Have your kids take swim lessons. Everyone should learn how to swim. Not only is it good exercise and fun but it’s a lifesaving skill. 2. Supervise. Assign an adult to be the “water watcher” and have eyes on pool at all times—no looking at those cell phones. Use “touch supervision” with young kids—always be an arm’s reach away. 3. Take safety measures. Home pools should be completely surrounded by a fence always. A young child may visit or a neighbor may wander in. In Southern California, skin safety is important all year, but especially during the summer. Here are three tips to protect skin from sun’s harmful rays: 1. Shield skin. Seek shade when possible by wearing wide brim hats and UPF clothing (available at a variety of price points). Also, make sure strollers and baby carriers have large sunshades. 2. Stock up on sunscreen. Be sure it contains skin-safe ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide; is broad spectrum; is at least SPF 30; and is baby-safe. 3. Safely and frequently apply sunscreen. Make it part of your morning routine and apply after swimming and every two hours that you’re in the sun. Wash it off at night. Teach kids to apply their own sunscreen properly so they’ll know how when you’re not there. With a little preparation, you will be set for a fun-filled and safe summer.

MONARCHS DYNAMIC KIDS SHOWCASE
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt Monarchs Gymnastics and Parkour welcomed over 200 families to their annual Dynamic Kids Showcase on March 23 at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center. The Dynamic Kids Showcase aims to celebrate the hard work and dedication that students at Monarchs show all year in learning gymnastics, tumbling, and parkour. Through curated obstacles and event circuits, parents, family, and friends were wowed by the awesome skills the kids showcased, culminating in a memorable gold-medal awards ceremony. The entire 50+ Monarchs staff worked tirelessly to set-up a full-scale gym for the students and were on hand to help guide the kids through two back-toback shows with choreographed routines, parkour, and ninja stations and a kinder circuit for the toddlers. Executive Director Lena Urusova reflects: “We couldn’t be prouder of our Monarchs students for months of hard work and preparation for the showcase.” For more photos of our events, please visit calabasasstyle.com.

35TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION MY GYM THOUSAND OAKS
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Melissa Westervelt
In early November of last year, a prolific milestone was achieved as Ceevan Sherman, son of founders Susi and Yacov Sherman, transitioned to full ownership of My Gym Thousand Oaks. The celebration, planned to also celebrate their 35 years in business, was postponed in November due to the tragedies we faced as a community. So, for their March celebration, the goal was to bring the community together and give My Gym Thousand Oaks and the community the party they deserved. My Gym alumni, current and new students, My Gym founders, and many who have been impacted by My Gym came together to celebrate the very first location out of the 600 worldwide. Food, vendors, a bounce house, a police car exhibit, raffles, face painting, and an ice-cream truck topped off the celebration. To see all of the locations and find out more, visit mygym.com.

their child and socializing with each other.” Former students take full advantage of their lifetime membership, often returning with their own children and even grandchildren. My Gym’s strong focus on family was evident from the start. Susi was pregnant each time they opened a new gym. The couple, who recently celebrated their 37-year anniversary, brought their three grown children into the fold. Daughter Talia, a graduate of UC Berkeley, helps with marketing, teaching, and training. She and her husband, Ryan Schneiderman, have a little girl, Nella. Following in her mom’s footsteps, she is again pregnant. Susi and Yacov’s daughter Yael, who received her master's degree at Cal State Northridge, is an assistant director for the Bright Horizons preschool at Paramount Studios. In her spare time, she leads birthday parties and classes and creates art projects for My Gym camps. Susi and Yacov’s son, Ceevan, became owner of their Thousand Oaks My Gym after graduating from Sonoma State College. Susi and Yacov are thrilled with all the energy and inspiration their children have brought to the family business. The gym’s primary goal is to create an environment where children feel loved and supported so their self-esteem and confidence can flourish. Families can celebrate special birthdays packed with plenty of games and physical activities. They also hold dynamic community parties and events. You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy the gym. When school is out, My Gym Camp offers a drop-off program with pay-by-day options plus volume discounts for affordable, no-stress fun. They’ll keep your kids moving with energizing games and gymnastics, cool arts and crafts, and engaging music. Folks looking to own a piece of the pie can open their own My Gym franchise and improve the lives of local children. In today’s world of decreasing school budgets and fewer well-maintained parks and physical fitness opportunities, kids need more arenas for structured play. Franchise owners can build upon Susi and Yacov’s years of experience to open a gym in their hometowns. The franchise office is in Sherman Oaks. Kids as far away as China and as close as Woodland Hills can enjoy fitness and fun at one of the myriad My Gym locations. “Through innovative and carefully structured programs, along with our ideal student/teacher ratio and noncompetitive atmosphere, My Gym allows children to discover what great things they can accomplish,” explains Susi. My Gym continues to enrich young lives every day as kids run, jump, dance, and sing their way towards joyous physical fitness and lifelong self-esteem. n 22027-B Vanowen St.

H2 LIFE INTENTION CHALLENGE H2 Life co-founders Melissa Eliyahoo and Sarah Nehamen partnered with Pepperdine University’s student-run communications agency, The Waves Effect, to create a feel-good movement on campus. In the wake of the recent Malibu fires and other unfortunate incidences of violence at schools across the United States, the groups were determined to create something positive to uplift and inspire the community. The H2 Life Intention Challenge is a game that incorporates H2 Life’s positive intention stickers with donations from sponsors, such as Planet Blue, Saje, Fresh Brothers, and Ring and Fair. H2 Life provides students with custom intention stickers with words they pick themselves and invites them to go out into the world to do something good that represents their intention. Students note that this activity has brought them closer to what is meaningful in their lives and what drives them every day.

campaign mission is to provide healthy food, training, education, and jobs for single-mother families without homes. Today, Los Angeles County has the largest “food-insecure” population in the entire country. INUNISON.ORG (IU) is spearheading the campaign with UCLA Extension and S.H.A.R.E. to launch IU’s nonprofit, Buda Vida, the first fully sustainable “seed-to-table” nonprofit restaurant in Venice, California. Buda Vida will employ single-mother families without homes to help them become financially independent and get off government subsidies and into safe, low-income houses of their own. Venice will be IU’s flagship location, with a vision to open Buda Vidas all over L.A. in an effort to bring an end to this crisis. Celebrity chef Jerumel Laygo designed the Buda Vida menu.
