A NOTE FROM THE
editor
“There’s no place like home.”
– Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz
A man or woman’s home is their castle. Since we’ve spent more time at home in the last year than ever before, why shouldn’t we design our homes to reflect the lives we want to live? Who needs to go away when we’ve spent so much time, money, and energy into designing our perfect spaces? Still, we all constantly update, remodel, and improve what we have. It’s no coincidence that this issue is dedicated to home, with local designers, contractors, and other industry leaders weighing in to help with your home from top to bottom and inside to outside. There’s always something on our home to-do lists. What’s next for you? We celebrate Women in Business in this issue. We’ve all had a challenging year, and these women prevailed. Let’s take a moment to acknowledge successful women who handled all that was thrown at them—multitasking at an insane pace and handling their responsibilities with ease and coming out on top. Some were also taking care of children at home, overseeing school days while balancing careers. On this note, don’t forget about mom and dad this year—you can find gift ideas in our Mother’s and Father’s Day gift guide. In this issue, we introduce the Gurvey Family on our cover, an example of what can happen when opposites attract. Bringing together an extrovert and an introvert can be a perfect combination that balances each other out. Gayle Barnes Publisher/Editor stylepublishing@gmail.com IG: @CalabasasStyleMagazine

NCL SAN FERNANDO VALLEY BALL ORIENTATION BRUNCH ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Annica Lin The San Fernando Valley Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) kicked off the 2021 NCL Debutante Ball with the annual Ball Orientation Brunch on Saturday, March 20. Hosted by the 9thgrade class of 2024 and chaired by Ani Zakari, Lisa Stutman, Kelly Berka, Mariam Aliabadi Brown, Krissy Reinhardt Freeman, and Elizabeth Yi, the brunch included a drive-through photo experience with packaged brunches for all of the presenting families and gifts for all of the debutantes and their mothers as they embark on the last portion of their six-year NCL journey to graduation. Later in the afternoon, the Ball Planning Committee and all of the presenting mothers and daughters met for a Zoom meeting to discuss the initial details and preparations for the ball. The 2021 theme, “Be a Light,” inspired by a song by Thomas Rhett, reflects the 26 presenting debutantes who emerged through challenging times with grace and brilliance.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS RENOVATE CASA PACIFICA LIBRARY ____________________________________ ____________________________________
Makena Large, Kaitlyn Seymour, and Nika Wallach—cadettes from local Girl Scout troop 60385—worked on earning their Silver Award, the highest honor a cadette can achieve, by doing a library renovation project at Casa Pacifica’s main campus in Camarillo. Over the past year, the girls have dedicated their weekends and after-school hours to work on the project. The renovation included repainting the walls, a complete book inventory, restocking current and age-appropriate books, reorganization, and catalog creation. Local businesses and community members made donations of paint, carpet, and books to aid in the girls’ success. The idea to incorporate Casa Pacifica into their Silver Award came from Makena Large, whose family donates to the nonprofit in honor of her late mother who spent time in the foster system as a child. Casa Pacifica’s mental health programs serve foster and at-risk youth. For more information, visit casapacifica.org.

LOBSTER TRUCK COMES TO CALABASAS HILLS ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Local Calabasas Hills resident and realtor Patte Gilbert decided to find a way to bring some fun to the residents of her local community. Patte knows that everyone loves getting food from food trucks, and she was able to secure one of the best. On Thursday, March 11, residents were thrilled when the Cousins Maine Lobster food truck rolled in. Residents were able to place their orders in advance on the Cousins Maine Lobster app or come right up to the truck to order in person. Everyone loved the great Maine lobster rolls, delicious lobster bisque, and authentic New England clam chowder. Kids loved the experience, and many moms were glad to have a night off from cooking in the kitchen! It also gave neighbors a chance to say hello while keeping socially distanced during the pandemic. Patte Gilbert loved organizing this fun event for her local friends and neighbors.

CONNECTING A CARING COMMUNITY DIAPER BAG CHARITY EVENT ____________________________________ ____________________________________ The effects of the pandemic have left thousands of Los Angeles families in desperate need. To help many of the moms who have been especially hard hit this past year, Lisa Kodimer, co-founder and executive director at Connecting a Caring Community, and her wonder ful team of volunteers organized an amazing charitable event to make baby diaper bags. Each bag contained diapers, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, and a stuffed animal for the babies. Many of the diapers were donated by Hello Bello who craft all their products with babies, parents, and the planet in mind. The diaper bags were then donated on March 12 to The Dream Center in downtown Los Angeles to be distributed to homeless moms. Connecting a Caring Community (CCC) is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that mobilizes the community to raise funds and provide relief to those in our community who are most in need. THE RANCH CAR CLUB’S COFFEE & CARS
____________________________________ ____________________________________ Written and photographed by Steve Geldman
Oak Park resident Rob Snyder and his friends—all members of the North Ranch Country Club—were getting antsy by mid-summer 2020 after being cooped up due to COVID. Knowing their cars must get their octane legs stretched, it was time to get out of their homes. They decided to meet up at the Shoppes at Westlake Village each month and talk cars over a cup of coffee. What started as a ‘small boys club’ has grown to a full-fledged Cars & Coffee car meet open to the public. Those that attend can be seen having a nice time enjoying the sights of some incredible automobiles, including exotics, beautiful classics, pro-street, and hot rods. The Ranch Car Club’s Coffee & Cars meets the fourth Saturday of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on the westside parking area of The Shoppes at Westlake Village.

How lucky and spoiled are we to live in Southern California with our gorgeous weather, beautiful oceans, green hills, and stunning wildflowers everywhere we look? Don’t let the wildflower season pass you by without getting out to take a hike or walk and enjoy them. Flowers are known to improve your mood and memory, aid in relaxation, and help to increase your energy. Besides all the benefits, they are simply spectacular to look at. Take time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak….

The Audi RS6 Avant
By Dustin Troyan Photography by Audi There are certain cars that many of us consider “sleepers.” A wolf in sheep’s clothing so to speak. A car that you only know what it is if you “know what it is.” Cars like these speak to a certain type of enthusiast, one that wants to make a statement without making a statement...and makes a certain type of statement. That may make sense to you or it may not, but again, those who know...know. The Audi RS6 Avant is a car that is utter perfection for car enthusiasts who want world-class performance, supercar performance, while driving around in a station wagon. A “grocery getter” or “car for the dog park,” the owners will jest, all while knowing that if a Ferrari or Lamborghini lined up next to them, they’d get a run for their money. Ahh, the unicorn...the Audi RS6 Avant. The RS6 Avant boasts a twin-turbo V8 engine pushing just shy of 600 horsepower. Naturally, the RS6 boasts Audi’s world-renowned, dynamic all-wheel-drive system, which gets this wagon from standing to 60 miles per hour in just over three seconds. And with a top speed of 190 miles per hour...just wait for the aftermarket tuners to get their hands on it. A 200-mile-per-hour “grocery getter,” the owner will say...all while trying to hide a mischievous smile and hoping for a freeway on-ramp. I once owned an Audi S4 Avant. It was a 2001 with a twin turbo and all-wheel drive. Even back then, the dream car for many of us was the RS6 Avant. Well, the dream is alive and ready for reality. This is one of those cars that if you can do it, do it. See you at the supermarket or the dog park! For more info: audi.com. n

MAKING MUSIC DURING COVID R yan England’s love for music began when he first learned to play piano at age 7. Since then, his passion and appreciation for music and the creative process inspired him to teach himself guitar, bass, and a variety of other orchestral instruments. At the age of 13, R yan began producing his own music. His expansive skillset now allows him to help friends and fellow musicians record their music. He and his band, 18PM, released their second album, “18PM! Vol. 2,” as a follow-up to their first project released in the summer of 2019 which focused on providing bite-sized, catchy tunes with a minimal-yet-familiar sound. The latest album expands on this sound, providing longer, more emotionally driven tracks. Ryan is a full-time student at CSUCI, currently studying for a BS in Computer Science. Grounding, also known as earthing, is what kids do naturally. Every time we stand barefoot in the grass or on a sandy beach, we’re engaging in the practice of reconnecting the body with the healing properties of our planet.

Since our planet’s surface emits a negative charge, these electrons may neutralize harmful free radicals within the body. Just as we consume antioxidants to maintain a healthy body, we may also gain positive effects through direct contact with the earth itself. While spending more time in direct contact with the earth may prove addictive, it’s undoubtedly a great habit to form. n

Managing
HANGXIETY By Lori Berezin
Who Knew It Was a Real Thing? During the pandemic, more people have turned to overindulging in food and alcohol, often waking up after a night of overindulgence feeling a bit flustered and anxious. There’s actually a name for this sensation: hangxiety. When the physical sensations of a typical hangover, such as hunger, dehydration, light sensitivity, and lack of sleep, combine with a touch of guilt and your body’s attempt to regain its sense of balance, you may feel out of sorts and anxious. Alcohol, a depressant, releases inhibitory neurotransmitters, which initially help you feel calmer. Afterwards, these chemicals increase, veering your body into overdrive with heart flutters and anxiety. To counteract these effects, you can try deep breathing and a few simple exercises. Eat a light meal if you can and take a long shower to get your blood flowing. When you overdo it with alcohol, your body goes into a period of detox for up to eight hours. You may feel nervous or anxious, even if you’ve only had a drink or two. Alcohol frees feel-good endorphins, numbing painful feelings. It also releases neurochemicals like adrenaline, dopamine, serotonin, and cortisol. These leave you feeling depleted and perhaps more anxious than usual the following day as your body attempts to adjust. But you can rebuild your reserves with a good night’s sleep, healthy meals, and relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation. And relax… this too shall pass. n

Bringing the Personal Touch Back to Medicine By Lori Berezin Photography by Marvin Steindler
D
uring a year unlike any other, it’s reassuring to know Dr. Daniel Rosen and others still managed to bring a personal touch to their patients. “This year, Calabasas Medicine became essentially a
COVID-19 practice,” explains Dr. Rosen. “Patients worried every medical issue was a possible COVID symptom. I mostly practiced reactive rather than proactive medicine.” His concierge-style practice became invaluable to patients since the compassionate doctor can care for a smaller group of patients than a typical medical office. The yearly concierge fee includes comprehensive care with on-call access to Dr. Rosen 24/7, 365 days a year. The office also provides immediate access to leading area specialists plus emergent hospital management to help navigate the often-confusing hospital setting. Membership rates, which can be found on Dr. Rosen’s website, vary for singles, couples, and families with children.

“We were among the first medical offices in the area to test and treat COVID-19 patients,” notes Dr. Rosen. “We offered drive-thru tests with fast, 15-minute results. That way, no patient entered our doors with a positive result. I could treat them without jeopardizing myself, staff, or other patients who came into our office.” He offers telemedicine services as well. Dr. Rosen’s office also enhanced its safety protocols with topof-the-line air purifiers in every room and a retrofitted airconditioning system with special UV properties to inactivate many airborne viruses. At Calabasas Medicine, all your medical needs can be accessed under one roof, including a state-of-the-art inhouse laboratory for immediate test results, a convenient in-house
pharmacy,
digital
imaging,
ultrasonography,
extensive cardiac testing abilities with EKG, echocardiogram, and stress testing. The practice also employs some of the most caring staff around, with over a century in combined primary care experience. At the center is Dr. Rosen, who has personally seen and managed myriad medical illnesses and emergencies. “I cared for many COVID patients this year. Fortunately, none required hospitalization.” He adds, “Things are gradually feeling a bit more normal.” The doctor encourages everyone to get vaccinated and begin scheduling regular checkups, mammograms, and other routine tests and treatments. When patients ask him if they’re safe going into his office, he replies, “I have a wife and two young daughters. I would never endanger our lives.” Dr. Rosen and his wife, Lauren, recently welcomed Riley into their lives. Giving birth during a pandemic is never easy. They, along with three-year-old Reese, continue to thrive. The good doctor took it all in stride, maintaining excessively safe and clean protocols to ensure that everyone, from his family to his patients, remains healthy. “Unlike most other board-certified internists, I was trained to handle acute and critical care hospitalized patients,” explains Dr. Rosen. “This has helped me manage most hospital-worthy cases outside the hospital, including COVID-19, resolving issues before they become more serious.” No wonder he’s been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by the Los Angeles Times (2019, 2020) and Los Angeles Magazine (2020). Dr. Rosen and his dedicated team continue to add their personal touch with patients. They all look forward to a renewed normal, serving Calabasas and the surrounding communities for years to come. Westlake Body
Contouring
A natural way to lose fat, heal pain, and more
W
By Lori Berezin and Kaylie Carafelli ith summer right around the corner, we want to look and feel our best—especially in our bikinis—so we search for ways to lose stubborn inches around our belly and thighs or shed excess winter weight. Now, Westlake Body Contouring in Agoura Hills offers a simple, pain-free solution to quickly
improve health, wellness, and beauty with no downtime. Using a state-of-the-art Contour Light low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with a patented reflective coating—the most power ful technology available—Dr. Dianne Lalena Sandberg provides patients with noninvasive fat reduction, chronic pain relief, and other amazing benefits. In just 25 minutes, patients can lose inches and tighten skin without pain, scarring, or cell damage, unlike more-invasive procedures like liposuction or CoolSculpting. One of the safest ways to sculpt the body, LLLT isn’t a form of radiation or UV light. The only side effects are inches lost and healthierlooking skin. To gain a better understanding, Dr. Dianne answered some pertinent questions about
Dr. Dianne Lalena Sandberg, DC
the Contour Light process.
What can be expected during the first treatment? Prior to the first treatment, we consult with patients to address their goals and concerns. We also take measurements before and after each session. To begin, you are covered with and comfortably lie upon warm LED pads for 25 minutes. It feels so relaxing that some patients even doze off. After the LLLT treatment, you stand on a 86
Calabasas Style
vibrating platform for 10 minutes to help drain the fat through your lymphatic system. Afterwards, you can go about your day’s normal activities.
How soon can results be noticed? Patients will notice the slimming effects immediately after the very first session. Generally, patients lose three to five inches from their waists, arms, hips, and thighs in just a single treatment. Plus, your skin appears more toned and radiant due to naturally increased collagen and elastin production. For fat loss, 12 treatments are recommended for optimal results though results vary by patient. Red light therapy is cumulative, so the most significant results are seen during the last 25% of treatments.
How does it work? When stimulated by specific wavelengths of light energy, fat cells deflate much like a balloon, releasing nearly all their fat content. It drains through the lymphatic system as free fatty acids and is eliminated from the body. For optimal results, it is important to drink two glasses of water every hour throughout the entire day of treatment and at least eight glasses on non-treatment days. Hydration allows the body to flush toxins while it begins to burn fat.
Can the Contour Light therapy treat pain? Often, those suffering from chronic pain seek alternative medicine when conventional medication is ineffective. Since the LED light increases blood flow and energy to the affected areas, it also reduces inflammation and pain to help ease a range of conditions from arthritis, neck and back pain, neuropathy, and joint pain to migraines and autoimmune diseases. Numerous studies have also shown the red light can accelerate healing of numerous types of injuries. While it is most important to lead a healthy lifestyle, body contouring offers extra help to achieve goals faster and easier. Westlake Body Contouring simply helps patients look and feel their best naturally. n

Ask the
Pediatrician Surviving Allergy Season By Dr. Tanya Altmann It’s springtime! Kids and adults can both suffer from allergies—itchy nose/eyes, sneezing, and a clear runny nose. Allergy symptoms often last for several months around the same time each year, compared to runny noses from viruses (including COVID) that are more likely to start suddenly and may include fever and last a week or two. Grass and tree pollens are the main causes of spring allergies. Here are steps you can take to decrease allergy misery in your family: • Avoid what you are allergic to as much as possible • Play or exercise outside in the evening instead of the morning as pollen counts are highest in the morning • Keep bedroom windows closed • Bathe after coming home from school and activities and/or before bed to remove pollen from hair and face • Use nasal saline rinses or sprays to flush pollen out of nose • Wash pets so they don’t bring pollen inside • Wear a mask while outside to cover nose and mouth Talk to your doctor but know there are over-the-counter allergy medications that can help symptoms—choose non-drowsy options. Consider allergy testing to identify exactly what you are allergic to and so you know what to avoid and when to start medication. Allergy shots and sublingual (under your tongue) immunotherapy can be effective to desensitize the body to what it’s allergic to. They help decrease future symptoms and decrease needs for medication. Talk to your physician (or call our office) as there are so many options to help keep your family comfortable and healthy.

Ask the
Pharmacist Q A
I am sneezing, congested, and coughing. I am concer ned it could be COVID but I also suffer from allergies. How can I tell the differ-
ence?
You are not alone. In today's world, with every sneeze, cough, or tickle in the throat, many people wonder: Do I have COVID-19? For the
millions of allergy sufferers around the country, this question becomes a little more complex: Is it allergies or COVID-19? Many symptoms are similar but there are some distinct differences as well. Some of the symptoms you mentioned--congestion
and
cough--are
common
with both, as are headache and sore throat. Unique to allergies are a runny nose, sneezing, and itchy watery eyes. Symptoms unique to COVID include body aches; chills; fever; shortness of breath; GI symptoms; such as nausea, vomiting, and diarr hea; and of course, the ultimate COVID identifier: the loss of taste or smell. It is most likely allergies if you have a history of seasonal allergies and if the symptoms respond to allergy medications. Since COVID testing is readily available, the easiest way to rule out COVID is with a PCR test. So, most likely, you are suffering from seasonal allergies, but it doesn’t hurt to get COVID tested to make sure. hroughout history, women have been known to make their jobs look effortless, whether they are running small, local companies or leading multinational corporations. We’d like to honor some of our
local businesswomen who treat their teams like family as they mentor staff and provide shining examples of fortitude and ingenuity. Most women already possess certain inherent traits, such as flexibility and emotional intelligence. They’ve also learned how to communicate well and check their egos at the door to really listen to other viewpoints. Born multitaskers, women clearly understand the importance of balancing work and family life while making each one of their relationships feel like number one. Women today thrive in boardrooms all over the world and right in our own backyard. On the following pages, we offer a glimpse into the hearts and minds of a few of our local female leaders. We hope you’ll be inspired as you discover how they use a storehouse of empathy, ideals, drive, and passion to succeed in the world of business.

Raychel Harrison Owner & Founder With a strong passion for building up both her clients and employees and making everyone feel their best, Raychel Harrison has built an incredibly successful career as a salon owner and beauty professional. Her prominent Calabasas salon, Salon Nuuvo, opened its doors in January 2012, and in 2015, Nuuvo Haircare, her clean-beauty haircare line, was born on the salon’s floor. When opening Salon Nuuvo, Raychel sought to bring a team-based approach to haircare services by creating an employee-based salon that offered her team full medical and education benefits— an uncommon concept in California salons. The positive environment and pay-it-forward culture Raychel created amongst her team directly benefits clients, since the team shares the goal of making sure everyone who steps foot in the salon has an amazing experience. Raychel attributes her success to three qualities: adaptability, determination, and balance. Last March, when she was forced to shut down the salon, she found innovative ways to stay in business, creating athome color kits for clients with a tutorial she added to YouTube. Now, Raychel is thrilled to invite her loyal clientele back into the salon with safety and comfortability as a top priority. Nuuvo Haircare’s online marketplace recently relaunched, and it is also available on Amazon Prime. The Mega Moisture Argan Mask is currently featured in one of the largest subscription boxes in the U.S. and is receiving rave reviews from buyers. THE TRUTH ABOUT
REVERSE
MORTGAGES…
It’s complicated! By Doug Huber man
Simply put, reverse mortgages enable seniors (62+) to take equity out of their homes for a variety of living expenses including— but not limited to—medical bills, paying home care providers, home maintenance, remodeling projects, or just to supplement retirement income. In their most basic form, reverse mortgages are the housing equivalent of the old RV bumper sticker: “We’re spending our kids’ inheritance!”

TRAVELING TEEN INSPIRES WANDERLUST Eighteen-year-old high school student Lucia Herranz has already traveled to 10 countries and counting. Born to parents who share her passion of seeing the world, Lucia says, “Traveling is in both my blood and DNA. I love immersing myself in other people’s cultures and viewing them from their perspectives.” From standing at the place where two oceans meet in Denmark to being chased by kangaroos in Australia, exhilarating experiences are what make Lucia feel most alive and inspire her continued travels. When the coronavirus pandemic began, she faced an incredibly frightening situation as she was studying abroad in China. Luckily, she made it home safely and enrolled in Westlake High School–only three weeks before the U.S. was forced to shut down. But that hasn’t deterred her wanderlust. After graduating in June, Lucia plans to travel across Europe and hopes to attend culinary school in Spain. Calabasas Style 131

The Porsche Taycan
By Dustin Troyan Photographed by Porsche
Yes, Tesla is cool, but then, there is the Porsche Taycan. Porsche is truly a strong brand, a powerhouse if you will, and when Porsche decides to do something, they really do it and do it well. I can tell you that I am more of a gasoline guy than I am an electric car guy. There is no denying that electric is the future and the performance is off the charts, but it is just a little soulless, no screaming motor or the smell of race gas...but then, I drove the Porsche Taycan 4S and— it pains me to say it—but it is utterly incredible. Incredible in every way.
Top to bottom, inside and out, Porsche
absolutely nailed it. Putting three hundred miles or so on the new Taycan, I can tell you that with every mile, I loved it more—the fit and finish and quality that Porsche is known for, the earth-shattering performance, particularly of the Taycan Turbo S. Tesla is going to see a lot of migration to Porsche, and all the other manufacturers had better look out. The bar has been set. Performance is staggering. Summer of Luxury
By Maya Williams Summer is my favorite time of the year. It’s typically a slightly slower time for designers as lots of clients are travelling, so I use any down time to live as luxuriously as I can at home. And luxury does not necessarily mean lavish. Everyone’s idea of luxury is different, but for me, I think of luxury as unpretentious, comfortable, and functionally chic—things that ease my daily life experience. It’s about elevating the ordinary. It’s the time I get to entertain friends and family, whether it’s for a casual Fourth of July party or Summer Solstice soirees. It’s also the time for self care at home. So, no matter how you define luxury, here are some tips and products to elevate your living spaces and create some luxury for yourself this summer. We’re so blessed in Southern California with the weather, and nothing changes the atmosphere at home better than opening up doors and windows and letting natural light and nature in. Use those

Their legendary customer satisfaction begins with an intimate understanding of both the industry and their clients. Pricing at Conejo Hardwoods remains as reasonable as the day it was founded, so their discriminating clientele can procure the most beautiful materials at reasonable prices. The company stays away from the mark-ups imposed by other L.A. showrooms. In doing so, they can offer luxury hardwood flooring that typically sells for $15/square foot at half the price. They also keep most products in stock. This leads to quicker turnarounds without restocking fees if customers order too much product, which typically occurs on most building projects. “Discerning Malibu and Valley residents don’t like to throw their money away,” says Roth, who understands firsthand how important a good deal is to even the most distinguished local customers. “We deal with very smart consumers. PACIFIC patio FURNITURE
Family-owned Pacific Patio Furniture first opened its doors in 2013. Eight years later, it’s still growing strong. Outdoor living spaces are being utilized as additional living space and people are investing in their outdoor areas even more. “Living in Southern California, the weather allows for nearly year-round outdoor entertainment, with an extended room outdoors. We felt a need to serve our community and provide luxury outdoor furniture and accessories at competitive prices,” notes owner Theresa Elkins. The company continues to grow by seeking out the newest design trends. This year, grey teak is a favorite, as seen in its contemporary Havana Weathered Teak Seating Collection. This cozy line offers clean angles and a smooth, weathered grey-teak finish. Paired with plush Sunbrella cushions, the set combines comfort with aesthetic appeal. The Seattle Collection features the rustic look of antique, grey-teak patio seating without the maintenance. The frame is made of thick-gauge aluminum that’s powder coated to look and feel like wood. You can easily clean the surface with a garden hose, soft cloth, and mild soapy water. It’s currently available in three frame finishes: Rustic Teak, Salvaged Lumber, and Reclaimed Barnwood. If you’d prefer to “mix and match,” that’s fine, too. Pacific Patio believes there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to your backyard and will gladly customize the layout to fit your particular taste and budget. “We enjoy spending time with our customers to better understand their needs,” shares Elkins. The desire for low-maintenance patio furniture, for example, arises frequently. Customers want their outdoor space to be a breeze. They’d rather spend less time on maintenance and more time doing what they love, such as barbecues and lounging by the pool with family and friends.” Fortunately, Pacific Patio offers plenty of styles that are both chic and easy to maintain. Customer service remains a top priority at Pacific Patio. The onsite sales staff can help you discover your ideal look. First, decide whether you want a modern, transitional, or traditional style. Next, consider the size of your backyard. Then, think about frame color and fabric. When you’re ready to shop for the perfect outdoor furniture, visit Pacific Patio’s Agoura showroom for expert design services and a stress-free experience. n

EXQUISITE SURFACE TRENDS FROM
FACTOR HD New trends emerge in home design each year. In 2021, retro and vintage textures have risen to the forefront according to the experienced designers at Factor HD. From brilliant whites to bright blues, tile designers and manufacturers are becoming more adventurous with colors, creating vivid, wild hues. T imeless neutral tones and grays are expected to remain on-trend for years to come. Other essentials in floors and sur faces, such as handmade porcelain mosaic tiles, remain in style, adding a splash of color and texture to more natural, subtle shades. In addition to new colors, the tile industry had also seen a dramatic demand for large-format porcelain tile and porcelain slab. From backdrops to shower walls, large-format tile has taken the industry by storm, capturing the look and feel of marble and stone with veins in the porcelain that mimic a more expensive material at a lower cost. Engineered wood flooring and luxury vinyl have transitioned to wider, longer planks—a huge benefit for new designs. Available in a range of natural shades—from light beige and rustic gray to walnut and cider brown, the flooring matches the look of natural wood with less upkeep. Refinishing old-style parquet floors has also gained in popularity. By simply applying a distressed wash, a floor gets a unique, updated look. A

CELLAR MASTERS Continuing the Tradition By Lori Berezin Photography by Scott Berry and Greg Barnett
A
cellar master is someone who supervises the making of wine, which certainly makes Cellar Masters an apt name for a company that has crafted more than 2,500 custom wine cellars over the past three decades.
Seven years ago, Scott Berry bought Cellar Masters when Founder Ben Benoit retired to his vineyard in Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s premier wine region. Adding his own unique taste and perspective, Berry continues to lead his team in the design, construction, and installation of climate-controlled custom wine cellars and storage solutions. “We continue to design and build wine features that are not only functional but beautiful,” says Berry. “We strive to bring these elements together to increase the overall enjoyment for both the avid collector and casual wine enthusiast alike.”
A life-long passion Wine has been a big part of Berry’s life ever since he was a teenager helping grow grapes and make wine with his family in Mendocino County, California, and his unquenchable thirst for per fection is what separates Cellar Masters from its competitors. “I share our clients’ passion,” explains Berry. “Understanding their wants and needs allows us to design a wine feature that meets or exceeds expectations.” A fully licensed and bonded contractor, Cellar Masters serves clients throughout Ventura, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Orange, and Riverside counties. The knowledgeable team of design experts, craftsmen, and skilled cooling technicians works in tandem to create the custom wine cellars of clients’ dreams. 156

“We do not believe in competition,” explains Litman. “We believe in presenting our skills in a manner that allows the client clarity by presenting a proposal that reflects what they want and what can truly be done—and done well. We are proud to be local to Calabasas and enjoy giving back to the community by volunteering in support of local police and fire departments, schools, Girl Scouts, and sports teams. Our business philosophy is to retain a small-town state of mind while caring for both our community and reputation through hard work and maintaining lasting relationships.” A sampling of satisfied customers can be found throughout their website and on review sites across the Internet. Vitoli’s tight-knit team clearly takes great pride in their work. “We are all moving parts of one, big, oiled machine and strongly believe in excelling in every step of the project from planning to construction,” notes the founder. “Our main priority is to care for our clients before, during, and after construction.” They typically begin a project with a site evaluation and comprehensive proposal, which incorporates impeccable 2D, CAD, and 3D renderings. They even offer an oculus virtual-reality option that enables a virtual walk-through of the property and grounds prior to construction. During the design phase, their in-house team ensures the plans go smoothly in accordance with city and county codes. Projects include everything from breathtaking landscape and garden design to bricklaying, concrete masonry, and artificial-turf installation. Vitoli also constructs tasteful outdoor kitchens, inviting patios and porches, sturdy retaining walls, elegant stone masonry, and more. In addition, they can craft the perfect infinity-edge or other ideally suited swimming pool for your hotel or backyard. They even install pool heating solar systems and perform low-impact development (LID) calculations for rain harvesting to help you and your property contribute to a sustainable future. At Vitoli Landscaping, Hardscaping & Pools, they believe it’s important to “be good and be good at it.” They even offer a free site evaluation to ensure your vision is built upon a strong foundation. both the warm heart and central hearth of a home. One of the newest trends for mantels in 2021 is minimalist. Creating a fireplace feature that blends seamlessly into the room and surrounding walls is a definite option. Additional hot looks include intricately carved limestone, marble, and other natural stones. Less expensive than marble, limestone can look just as rich and is extremely durable. Match kitchen counters and islands with slabs of the same-colored marble or limestone for an elegant touch. During the Victorian era, fireplaces were built in multiple rooms for warmth. Today, having several fireplaces in a single home has become the fashion rather than the necessity, especially in warmer climates. Rustic is also very popular this year. Consider incorporating bricks and natural stones into your fireplace and mantel. Elegant Fireplace Mantels in San Fernando creates a myriad of limestone, traditional, old-Europe, contemporary, modern, custom-made mantels, and pre-made designs. Their massive 40,000-square-foot showroom houses the largest collection of fireplace mantels in North America. They’ve crafted thousands of mantels and pieces, such as columns and fountains for residential properties and high-end commercial projects, including for Caesar’s Palace and the Bellagio, MGM, Wynn, Venetian, and Paris hotels in Las Vegas. ART IN YOUR Beautify your outdoor space! By Lori Berezin
GARDEN
Photography by Gayle Barnes and provided While nothing can replace the natural beauty of Mother Nature, a few well-placed pieces of art enhance any garden. Popular items include colorful spinners to capture the light and gentle breezes, mosaic sculptures that shine so gracefully, and soothing fountains to add the element of water to the desert-like Southern California landscape. If you have room, paths with meditative mandalas and swirling labyrinths impart a touch of mysticism. Ancient symbols, such as Celtic spirals or Buddha statues, also lend mystical focal points, while multi-colored metal sculptures create a contemporary, one-of-a-kind oasis. 166

Bring feng shui into your garden
Consider feng shui principles when designing your garden. This ancient practice comes from the Chinese words feng, meaning wind, and shui, meaning water. Feng shui connects one’s surroundings with the natural world to create harmony. Incorporate all five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water to establish good feng shui. Use a fountain or small pond to bring in the water element. Be sure they remain clean and flowing and remove any dead leaves so energy doesn’t stagnate. The glowing sun naturally introduces the fire element. Brightly colored red and yellow flowers also carry this fiery energy. Wind chimes and metal sculptures represent the metal element, which
fosters clarity of mind and prosperity. Green plants and trees enhance the wood element, which symbolizes growth and creativity, while earth imparts stability. Crystals and anything brown, yellow, orange, flat, or square also expands the earth element, which is ever-present in the soil and trees. Another important feng shui principle is to create winding pathways rather than straight ones. This encourages the chi, or energy, to meander rather than flow too quickly along a straight line. It also creates feelings of calmness. You can also place a wind chime at your front or back door to slow down any fast-moving energy.
Include splashes of color Color adds another level of intrigue. Bright splashes of red, orange, and yellow catch the eye. Choose your favorite colors and design accordingly. Use only a few different colors or shades to create a subtle ambiance. Pastel colors make your space look larger, while bright colors bring the eyes and drama up close.
Art grows the human element in your garden Your favorite pieces of art add new shapes, colors, and textures to your garden. Triangular, pointy sculptures create a visual counterpoint to round and oval flowers. Create a mosaic or painting of your own to further personalize your outdoor space. Or showcase some of your favorite mementos to commemorate special occasions and trips. Place fanciful stone or ceramic animals beside your plants and flowers. Well-placed birdhouses or koi ponds are always appealing too. Functional pieces, such as colorful benches, planters, and chairs, can also turn a simple scene into an inviting outdoor gallery. Whichever pieces you choose, add a human touch with art to create your own modern-day Garden of Eden. n

Calabasas Style
By Lori Berezin Photography by Debbie Vaccarello We’re so blessed to live in California where such jewels as San Francisco —the City by the Bay—beckon. From the historic architecture of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, and the colorful Victorian painted ladies to the diverse districts, including Chinatown, Nob Hill, and Haight-Ashbury, the city offers eye-popping views around every curve. Even amidst pandemic restrictions, there’s still plenty to do and see. Drive down Lombard Street, one of the “crookedest” in the world. Visit Golden Gate Park, where exhibits, such as the Botanical Garden and Japanese Garden, remain partially open. Listen to the bark of sea lions as you sample fresh seafood at Pier 39 along the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf. Ferry across the Bay to infamous Alcatraz Island, former home to one of the most renowned prisons in the country. Dine on such quintessential San Francisco cuisine as clam chowder in sourdough bowls and succulent cracked Dungeness crab pulled fresh from the sea. Sweeten the deal with decadent chocolate desserts at Ghirardelli Square. Rent bikes and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge for a once-ina-lifetime experience. Reward your efforts at the San Francisco Brewing Company’s outdoor beer garden and toast your good fortune as the sun sets dramatically over the Golden Gate Bridge. n
